No Man's Sky is a technological and artistic wonder, but - as a game - it's not very good.

I'm sure by now you've heard all the press about the 80Q (Quadrillion) stars out there. That they're all generated by some art-code love-child called procedural generation. People say this is an epic achievement in game design.

    It is.

That's all true. And the fact Hello Games does it in a way that is compelling, interesting, and believable should earn them the Academy Award for Technical Achievement (or whatever the game equivalent is).

But unless you're in The Industry (like me), that is probably hard to appreciate on it's own...especially after you've shelled out $60! But if you've made that poor decision - as I did - you'll have to live with the fact you now own a storied piece of academic gaming history with no real commercial merit. Kinda like owning an OUYA. Also like me. Okay, so I am an epic sucker for unrealized potential.

And Unrealized Potential is the subscript for No Man’s Sky.

Right from the get-go, there is very little "game". In order for a game to exist (or at least be interesting) you have to have an objective. At the start, the objective is "fix this busted ass spaceship you're standing next to". Interesting, but far from epic. But as a dutiful gamer, I did as I was told. This led to several hours of fixing this thing or that which was significantly purloined by all the optional side-questing (I'm easily distracted). I really should put "side quest" in quotes, because these shiny objects I was lured toward didn't fit into some grand story arc either. They just were question marks...?...on the map I stumbled upon in my random exploring. Most led to marginal increases in my wealth - achieved through the mind-blowing game mechanic of opening chests - but every once in 2-3 hours I got a much needed upgrade to my limited starting inventory slots.

Ten-odd hours in and I still had no idea what I was doing or why. Some of this was not undesirable. I had some fun cataloging new discoveries, leveling up my mining tools, and exploring new worlds. Until I realized every world looked like Utah on hallucinogens. Forget that crazy trailer you saw with the brontosaurus and triceratops creatures stomping through flowing fields of purple wheat. Nothing in the game actually looks like that. NOTHING.

Okay, at least nothing of the 0.00000000000019% of the NMS universe that I saw.

Instead imagine visiting the Moon, with some plants, odd crystals, and deer-like thingys...all cast in various psychedelic colors.

Then repeat that. Over, and over. With the occasional generic encampment with 2-3 interactive console and pithy story segments.

Even the character/item advancement is bland and frustratingly bloated. Instead of earning permanent upgrades, you have to use your valuable inventory slots to hold upgrades for your, weaponry, mining equipment, etc..

I bet you’re super psyched now huh?

I shouldn’t be so harsh. It’s not that exploring isn't fun. It is. Marginally so. For the first ten hours. Then the rest is rinse-and-repeat. Again, there is no game here. There's no objective. It's exactly UNlike Skyrim which has layers of story, a tapestry of small-medium-large quests, and honed character advancement. In NMS there is just never-ending exploration among worlds that are kinda all the same.

Don’t fear: there is one objective in the game. To get to the center of the universe! There’s only one problem: it takes too durn long to achieve. I had spent my first ten hours accumulating my first 5M credits. (We'll put to the side for a second that was achieved through a series of excruciatingly monotonous mining exercises that made Minecraft seem like a day in a forest made of chocolate, rainbow sprinkles, and cherry juice).

To the Center of the Universe, I came up with roughly 100 hours of gameplay remaining....in a repetitive...boring...wasteland...that looks like Utah...on LSD.

Keep in mind my estimate was for straight-line space travel, which would make sense given space is a frictionless, mostly empty, vacuum, but in NMS you actually have to backtrack between stars. So assume 100+ hours.

    No thanks.

You probably never want to play this game now. No, you should! Definitely. In fact, I feel so strongly you should I can easily predict there will be a time - years from now - when you'll be talking with your kids at home or coworkers at the office about the latest VR blockbuster and someone will say it's what NMS should have been. If you don't play this "game", you won't get that reference! And I'm sure that reference will be made as NMS is a notable bookmark in the pages of technical, artistic, and - okay fine - game design.

So, wait for the inevitable price discount. Feel okay at $40, better at $20, and rapturous at $10.

But no matter what, play it. It's an achievement.

(Just not a very fun game.)

On my very first planet, I got MOUNTAINS and CAVES to explore (yes, these things are said "non-existent" by the "0 to 5"-people).

Give the game a chance, it is really atypical and very pleasant to travel.

Slapping on a 60€ price for an indie game and expecting people to buy it, is simply absurd. Though the problem is not with the price itself, because that's how much triple A games cost. The problem is that this game isn't even half of an AAA game, that costs as much as this. Overall it's a mediocre game, that was killed by the overhype it created. Space combat is terrible, a small FOV and cluttered cockpit with no 3rd-person view was not a good design choice. This game is big for the sake of the developer to say "It's Big!" There is alot of enjoyment to be had here but it's sadly buried in a game that is just another over-ambitious promise from a new developer.

I have put 15 hours in so far and I have to say the most fun is discovering. Just discovering, finding, new aliens and new planets.
You can learn bits and pieces of a language by finding Relics so you can better communicate with the aliens and increase your standing. But again, it's just a side thing that's only there if you choice to do so. I have hope this game can be saved by adding some more features but I can see alot of people becoming bored with it very quickly.

It took quite a while to collect and scan items but I was playing without the patch upgrade and I am so thankful for the patch which helps the inventory system slightly. My expectations of this game were a Star Trek style of game, travel to new worlds and find interesting alien life. So far only a small amount is true. Yes you can travel to new worlds, yes you find new life forms but so far the aliens in different galaxies are all the same. You walk up to them and speak... you get some gibberish alien talk text... you answer to what you think is right...you might get a gift - DONE. The rest of the time is spent scanning plants, rocks and creatures or collecting resources for fuel etc. It would have been great if you could have built colonies or have some varying alien life that you could truly interact with. I will play this for a little while longer to see if it improves (hopefully!) as it may be too early to tell what the rest of the path forward has to come. If this doesn't improve then I'm afraid I will get bored very quickly and probably trade in for another game. Don't get me wrong the game looks great and the concept is well overdue but as it stands it needed to be developed a bit more. Expand

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a review for 'Starbound', where I basically said it was interesting, but flawed. Well, No Man's Sky is flawed, but not very interesting.

It's a curious release, because this type of space-exploration sandbox hasn't really been made with consoles in mind, yet Sony are the ones who've been beating the drum for this title. It's basically an exploration/survival game, with minimal crafting and adventure elements. If you came to this game expecting an epic, sweeping story, you will not find one. You effectively do the same thing in every star system and every planet, with very small, cosmetic alterations between them.

Even the much vaunted 'quintillion worlds' feature is a bit of a let-down as, apart from palette differences, most planets are created from the same few templates. Plants (flora) are especially indistinct, as every planet has the same basic types that contain iron, platinum, zinc, etc.

Also, the graphics are pretty poor; I own several consoles and a PC, and I know a console is never going to be cutting edge in terms of graphics, but this wouldn't look out of place on PS3. And I'm talking early-release PS3.

I've played the game quite a bit and there is a grim determination to the grind of upgrading, travelling to a new star system, searching for elements, etc. But where does it end? The game has three 'paths', but these are just a clever way of rationalising your gameplay type; explore, head for the end or just wander about randomly. They make no difference to the plot.

An odd choice for an AAA release, and an even odder choice for a tentpole console game. I can imagine this finding its audience in the Steam community, with mods and the like, but for £45/$60 on the PS4... What were Sony thinking?

All of these arguments are pointless drivel. My opinion is that this title is one of those that should have been published as a 24h demo, and in order to continue playing you'd have to pay. But, controversy creates cash, and that's good for the small team behind NMS.

There is a lot of room for growth in this title, that is for sure, but I personally am able sink hours in the tinkering and exploration while enjoying myself immensely. I don't like knitting, but I imagine my grandma likes knitting for the same reason I like NMS.

But here's the thing, I bought this game with an expectation that it will be updated, upgraded, and made better. I don't really want more things, but I want more things to do. My grandma didn't knit socks all the time, she also knit some scarves, and whateverthehell else you can knit.

If you read until here, let me give an honest to god helpful hint: Did you spend more time building your base in Fallout 4 than actually playing the core game? If yes, buy NMS. If not, don't.

Good luck travelers on your journey of convergence to the center. If you are a fan of science fiction, and are looking for a Space Exploration simulator that is lighthearted with a sense of wonder and hope. No Man's Sky is the game for you.

The slightly skewed reviews that some of these people are leaving makes you just want to shake your head in disbelief. Read all the 0 and 10 reviews. Makes me want to vomit. No This game is not a 10. No this game is not a 0. Its not a 3 or 4 or even a 5. The game is a Solid 7 and half, 8 or 9 in my opinion. And just to sway the critics I am going to give it a 9. Here is my reasoning.

    First starting with negatives:
Yes the game was largely over-hyped. Yes the combat is pretty basic. Yes there is no story or its hidden within the game and I need to learn the language to uncover it. The movement kind of is slow when on foot.

Now lets move to the positives.
But once you get into your spaceship and can fly from place to place, it gets much better. Your spaceship is your home, kind of. So be sure you don't go too far from it. You store everything there, once your suit runs out, and it helps you find Alien Artifacts, Trade Outposts to buy new Ships, and just helps you travel Space and Explore.

No Man's Sky is actually quite enjoyable. Once I got through slight learning curve in the first few hours. Flying from one point to another. Naming different animals, which are surprisingly well animated and have different behaviors and vary largely in size and color. I met this huge animal of about 15 feet long thing that looked like a Lion with a Cone head that was amazing. I took many pictures and videos of it, and sent them to my friends. The thing was freaking huge, and I gave it good it then it was happy and started to follow me around. So real, it felt real. I felt as if I was there.

The game world is very ascetically pleasing. And I must stress this, the world in a word is beautiful. The Space is also quite pleasing to the eye. This is not a realistic space sim. This game is a story book space sim. Like traveling to another Universe, sort of. And exploring it is truly a Unique experience unlike any I ever experienced in any game.

From the start. What I did was I spent 12 hours on the first planet to make sure I got everything catalogued before moving on to the next planet. To the people saying each planet environment is not varied are truly wrong. My first starting planet had mountains, peeks, valleys, grass, different colored sky. I named my first planet Ferdinand 1, and my Solar System Magellan after the famous explorer. I plan to name all the planets I see after famous explorers and ships of history. The next planet I named Isabella after the Spanish monarch. But back to Ferdinand 1. Ferdinand 1 And it was the kind of place I would want to spend many years in. I cannot figure out how they made the game world look so unique.

Props to the development team on this game. Just ignore the negative and reviews and focus on the positive. The game needs some work, but I am sure future updates will add many requested features.far as just what we have at launch, its an extremely playable and enjoyable experience.

Two things I would fix are the interface, and the movement. Maybe add some land vehicles. Walking and flying shouldn't be the only ways to travel. Some type of Land rover or car would be great.

This is kind of a first impression review as I only have spent maybe 12 hours in the game, so as I play more of it, I am sure I will discover things such as learning Alien language. The mystery of the Atlas. And try to get to the center of the Universe, but right now I am just too busy exploring my own Solar System, before I even think about going further.

Good luck travelers, and don't let these 0 star reviews get you down. They are wrong, or people who did not even play the game. Or the type of people that play a game till end, and return it. If you are that type of player, that is looking for a story driven game, stay away from it. If you are looking for an enjoyable game you can play for many days, months, maybe even years and like Science Fiction. Then this game is for you.

Even though the graphics are a bit dated, the beauty of the environments overshadows the graphics and just makes you want to explore and find new things. The first hour was tough, but once I figured out the mechanics. I think this game will hold me off for a long time.

This game IS for you if you like to explore, scavenge, and travel the expansive world known as No Man's Sky. I love this game for many reasons, the first is being able to name everything you discover. You can name the system, the planets, the moons, the fauna, and even specific points on the planet. This gives me so much excitement because I have a huge imagination and want to release that. The pure joy of this game is exploration. I love warping into a new system and getting surprised at what lays there waiting for me to discover it.

This game is for those who want that sense of enjoyment discovering a new system or naming a weird looking creature. It is not a game for the hard core gamer who wants an objective to complete. No Man's Sky gives very little direction and I love it about that.

The reason I gave it an 8, was because the activities run short after a few hours of exploring. I wish I had a few objectives to find or complete on each planet that switched up the gameplay just a little. But other than that, this game is phenomenal.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man Sky appears to be suffering from the over hype of the game and thus generating reviews that are absolutely uneducated. You can't form an opinion about the game after only playing two hours. After playing for 7-10 hours I have discovered that the game has a lot of depth when it comes to the game especially with the alien races. You don't instantly understand what they are saying to you so you rely on visiting obelisk and talking to them in order to gain knowledge and learn the language. The depth is when you explore more into these alien races. The large obelisk monuments are obscure and mysterious but reveal information that adds to the experience. For example I encountered an alien race of Gek in a system, they look reptilian or amphibious like, have an awful smell, and are very fond of trading and consider your character as a customer. While venturing around the world I came across a bit of knowledge from an obelisk about the Gek. I won't reveal what was said but it was an amazing bit of information that I learned about the species and it made me look at the alien species a different way and interact with them differently. Another species I came across was the Korvok which is a alien species that may or may not be robotic. The Korvoks are highly intelligent and focus on studying plant and animal species. They enjoy acquiring information and think of you as a test subject. There is an even larger narrative in play in this game and I think we haven't given the game enough time to discover everything it holds. The Atlas Station is also extremely mysterious and I think there are things that will be discovered in the future. Just because the game doesn't live up to what everyone imagined it to be, doesn't automatically make it a below average game and the great thing is there is infinite room for growth! Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but its not and abysmal joke of a game that everyone is trying to make of it. I'd suggest waiting to see what the developers plan for the future of the game. If they are adding content constantly, than this game is worth everyone's time. Honestly I thought I was going to absolutely hate the game but I learned that it was captivating if I actually looked at what was going on in the game. Expand

And with no multiplayer or a nice story this game is not worth $60. Most of the planets that I visited are dead, empty and depressing, finding life on some planets was cool and interesting at first, but the interaction with the animals isn't fun, you can feed them, analyze them, or kill them. I didn't find any interesting characters and when I reached the center of the universe I was very disappointed by what I saw, possibly the worst ending in a video game. There is not much you can do and you'll get bored after 5-7 hours of mining resources, craft/upgrade, sell your resources, go to another planet and do the same thing over and this is bad for a $60 title. For a company with a name that is a social greeting, they mist their opportunity to make one of the most inspiring social experiments yet. They say they want you to feel small and show the scope of reality, and while that is amazing, I also play games to have fun. That said, I always tend to have fun with friends and other people in general. When thinking of what this game could have been at the pinnacle of its hype, I thought about how cool it could be to wage galactic war in a glorious infinite game world. A game where you could make your own faction, your own kingdom. Hello games has some amazing ground work here, but until the shell is filled, they have something just OK. I hope that this game is one that continues to expand. They are withholding one of modern gaming's treasures from us, a social No Man's Sky would be the definitive social experience, if only. So until we can wage war to claim the sky, I will say no to fully recommending this game, although it is fun in bursts, there is nothing long term here. Expand

The Meh: Inventory UI Please let me automatically refill charges if I have the mats on hand Waypoints please!? Texture pop-in can be a little weird and ugly when you are moving

    The Galaxy map

All in all, playing this game for what it is, it is a great game. It delivers exactly what I wanted out of it. Flying around, checking out things in space, in a relaxed environment. When I want to get dirty and actually feel like I am flying, I have Elite for that, but when I want to chill and take in all the visually amazing things in space and have fun with out having to get out the HOTAS, NMS is it! It's perfect for that hole that needs filled.

It's not with out its own problems and quirks and there's definitely some things that need addressed, like the galaxy map, and things added like some sort of base building, but I got my $60 out of it in just the first planet.

No Man's Sky is an exploration game first and foremost. If you're into that, this is *the* game for you. If not, keep your money.

I honestly think the people here whom are giving this game low ratings just had unreasonable expectations of it. No, you can't build space stations or create civilizations. No, you can't enlist in the space army. Don't expect a singleplayer story either.

No, you can't enlist in the space army. Don't expect a singleplayer story either. Multiplayer seems to be absent too. Like I said, No Man's Sky is all about exploration. It has some survival elements, but the game isn't very challenging.

The game can get pretty repetitive as well. Half of the game consists of endlessly grinding materials for upgrades, to sell or to use as fuel. But all that gets diminished by the sheer size of No Man's Sky's universe, or at least in my opinion it does. It might not be worth €60, but I still recommend getting it, if you're into exploration games.

TL;DR: This game isn't for everyone. If you're not into exploration and endlessly grinding materials for upgrades, don't bother. If, like me, you enjoy this type of gameplay, No Man's Sky is a game you'll thoroughly enjoy.

Each planet has a different climate, weather, toxicity/heat/radiation levels, etc. I struggled a bit in the beginning trying to learn the basics of the game. However, once I got used to the controls and tasks that I had to do, the game began to show its true colors.

You are a Traveler, embarking on an adventure that will literally take you across the universe. You will need to be able to mine resources to power/upgrade your exosuit, multi-tool (for mining and combat), and ship (shielding, weapons and storage) to help you survive on planets and in space. Each and every element you mine serves some sort of purpose in the game world. Some players may wish to mine and build a better suit and ship. Others may want to loot these resources from large AI controlled ships in space. Some may want to become a trader and sell their resources to earn more money. Some players may simply wish to wander around this literal universe. You can do all these things and much more. (You can name your own planets, systems, plants, and animals. Other players may also come across places where you've left your mark).
There is interesting lore in this game that I will not spoil. However I will say that the ability to learn the languages of the different races in the game is interesting. It pays off in many different ways, such as receiving crucial upgrades from a certain alien via the correct response to what they say/ask for.

No quests, no set out character, no interesting aliens, nothing that keeps the game interesting. When you enter a new planet, the initial thrill of seeing what it looks and its composition dies off soon when you realize that every planet really is a dead planet. There isn't anything particularly specific to do except discover some animals, which gets old very fast. Yes, they have different things to mine but unless you want to stand there and fire a laser beam at rocks for 2 hours, it really isn't interesting. But its vastness is filled with mundane tasks and NPC that might as well be just posters because you can't really interact with them. You are the only one doing something in this universe and even you don't know what's that exactly. It has some bugs but nothing like FO4. They don't ruin the experience, just break the immersion a bit.

Planets are really diverse but what's on them isn't. It's always some monolites, the outpost, the storage upgrade, the broken ship and the antennas. Then you collect some resources and travel to the next planet or star until you're killed by bandits.

I'll keep trying but I see this game getting old pretty quickly, unfortunately. It opens up a new range of promising possibilities for game development, though. Let's hope its legacy remains positive to the industry.

No Man's Sky is, first and foremost, beautiful to look at. It may feel redundant at times, but each new planet is unique. Flora and fauna, the sunsets and moons, oceans and valleys and blizzards and toxic storms are each gorgeous in their own right, and delightful to experience. Upgrading is easier than people are making it out to be- if you're short on money, just mine some useless rock and trade it in for cash. There is easy access to progression even on the most inhospitable planet.

I have yet to enter a true combat sequence in space, but encountering massive frigates and space stations is equally fantastical. The sheer size and scope gives you time to reflect, appreciate, and consider your next steps. Do you really want to warp away from the planet with the trading outpost and that nice ship you could buy? Will that space station hold friends or foes? Do I have enough equipment to make it out of the system, even if I have to shoot my way out?

Really, I've found No Man's Sky to be an existential monument. It forces you to be patient, confront solitude, and contemplate what it means to be alone discovering the universe. Repetitive isn't the word I'd use- reflective is. I'm treating my playthrough like a choose your own adventure Sci-Fi novel of my youth, and each new alien landscape I slog across is a reminder of the wonders of discovery that I personally haven't felt since I was a kid. It moved me, deeply, and I have a feeling that as I inch my way toward the center it will continue to make me think about my actions and the journey I'm taking in a way I haven't considered in a long, long time.

But the creatures lack that same randomness. Sure they are procedural generated and they are different...but only so slightly. I have seen the same dog/deer type creature a ton of times and the only difference maybe the width of the creatures legs, or a fin on the back but 95% of it is the same. No lizards? No insects? I understand the creatures on the same planet could be similar...but I have been to 12 different planets in 4 different systems and this creature is on 75% of the planets. But I have seen like 4 or 5 truly unique creatures and when they come along it is a neat site.

Then the gameplay loop of the planets. Land, scan, find "?", then create override key, scan for the four things everything. Goto sites...learn some words, create warpdrive...and go on to the next planet. The only variable in that process is if you will get attacked by 4 pirates at once or 5 :)

I do enjoy this game...but I do not LOVE it like I was hoping.

    1) The assets are very low quality. I mean, visible pixels and all.

    2) It is nowhere near being optimized. Let me just say this: the console is the nexus of optimization. They spend hours and hours making it look good on these because they have a limit of hardware. Don't get me wrong: it will look much better on the PC than on the console, but the resource cost will probably be much higher than you expect. Also: wouldn't be surprised in the lease if it is FPS capped like it is on the playstation.

    3) You see most of the available assets on the first few planets you are on. After that, the assets repeat over and over and over again. On one planet, gold looks like gold, on another planet, it's the same but BLUE! And they weren't even thorough enough to make all of it cohesive. When you see the little gold bits flying at you (collecting them) suddenly they turn from blue to GOLD again! #SCIENCE!

    4) It's really cool that you want to name that animal after your son, but you will probably be the only person who ever sees it. With the repetition of assets means that there are NUMEROUS iterations of things that look the same, but don't keep the name that you gave them. Even in the same SYSTEM, you go to another planet and that blue flower that gives you Platinum? It looks exactly the same, but it's an entirely different species.

    5) It's not an exploration game. I was told this game was going to be an explorer's wet dream. The thing that is so agonizing (like, blue balls level agonizing) is that it COULD be that! The problem is that you will spend so much time acquiring resources that allow you to survive long enough to explore that you won't be able to actually enjoy the exploration that you want to do! Remember when the food/water timers were WAYYYY too fast in Rust and H1Z1? Yeah, it's that bad. It may not be food/water in this game: it's protection and life support. Something something a rose by any other name....? TL:DR - it's a survival game with exploration elements, not an exploration game with survival elements.

5a) I sure hope you like busywork - because that is pretty much all the game is! Tag plants and animals on one planet, do it again on the next!

    6) The biggest thing for me is all of the evidence that Sean Murray totally lied to us for a long time (see places like reddit, if you can stand the fanboism for long enough). Remember this last week when he started tweeting and blogging about how we shouldn't get upset if the game is totally different than he presented it? Yeah. How can I trust a team that has billed the game as one thing for so long (OK lets be honest, it took him 4 years just to say what you even did in the game so I guess that we can't go too hard on him here) and then pulled the ole bait and switch.

    7) He is still an indy developer even though he's backed by sony. So let's say that he actually intends to fix the things he says that he wants to - it will take the team FOREVER to do it because of how small the team is, and how many platforms they must update all at once. Do the math.

    8) It is a buggy mess. There are so many examples of clipping and things just not working right that I couldn't even list them all. Sometimes when I take off in my ship, I hover nicely above the ground like I should, other times I am catapulted across the solar system with no way to get back to the planet because I'm out of fuel lol.

    9) They pretty much plaigurized Rodina for exploration mechanics.

No Man's Sky borrows a little from Wing Commander and a little from Minecraft and makes an awesome hybrid that will fare differently for most people, and therefore is bound to see mixed reviews. The core of the game is its ability to deliver an almost entirely procedural generated universe. That's not an easy trick to pull of between the 10 or so people who worked on this game, but itsNo Man's Sky borrows a little from Wing Commander and a little from Minecraft and makes an awesome hybrid that will fare differently for most people, and therefore is bound to see mixed reviews. The core of the game is its ability to deliver an almost entirely procedural generated universe. That's not an easy trick to pull of between the 10 or so people who worked on this game, but its where the game shines brightest.

The problem (for me) with Minecraft style games is that they pull you back to a central location. There's this big huge world to discover, but you have this invisible tether to the place you begin (or home base). No Man's Sky alleviates this problem by nearly forcing you to explore the vast, endless space expanse before you.

Here's where it gets tricky. All mindless and repetitive tasks aside the gameplay holds up to genre standards as far as a survival/sim goes, no more no less. You need several things to survive: fuel, resources, and environmental protection to name a few. There are ways to upgrade your mining tool/gun, your ship and your suit, and there are a good amount of them. However, the heavy emphasis on procedural generation means there's always a chance you come across boring, mundane planets and run of the mill gear for hours on end. This broke the experience for a few of my friends, as discovering new and exciting things IS the main draw to this title, and they just weren't having that experience.

If you stick with it though, No Man's Sky is incredibly rewarding. You'll get to say things like "HEY I just found a half cow/half gecko hybrid that swims in circles and poops out Carbon!". Yes, that exists. This kept me coming back for more in the first few days, and now I've sunk a good 20 hours into the experience.

Technically speaking. there is a LOT of pop in the game. Textures take some time to generate and the player moves quickly in flight, so it creates a lot of jarring imagery. Overall a small price to pay for no loading screens and seamless planet-planet jumps.

It has its quirks, but seems to be receiving a very harsh response in the community. In my opinion, if you like space/aliens/adventure then its a tough title to ignore. It definitely scratches all those itches and more, worth checking out.

Big, $20 sandbox with few compelling toys, unattainable hype and a $60 price tag. Fun, but super unimaginative creatures, landscapes and "gameplay". Expected from something generated, not created, but still as disappointing. Looking worse than one would expect from PS4, being a "graphical powerhouse" and all.

Small piece of advice to newcomers: find a "Trading Post," park your ship, and start exploring the local terrain for all it has to offer. Love this game. 10/10, no doubt. Expand

To my surprise the game is actually better than I expected.
Of course it is not a perfect game that will last you forever. It is still "small" indie game from small indie studio. So of course there is not enough totally unique content for 14 quatilion planets. And sooner or later the gameplay starts to repeat itself.

But... there is actually surprising amount of content and goals for you to finish. Of course some basic elements (like trading posts, caves,...) on the planets are present in such amount, that they repeat from very start. But there is enought of unique stuff that is not copy+pasted everywhere, but it is really rare to encounter. So even after hours and hours of gameplay you encounter new unique content. And the feel of exploring the unknown still drives you forward. This helps to keep the game fresh for along time.

The most important thing is, that game is not a total meaningless walking simulator. It actually gives you enough objectives (to build something or points you in direction of some unique structure or NPC) to keep you going and to encounter cool stuff. So far I did not encountered situation that I would be exploring for a sake of exploration. Or grinding elements just so I can grind more elements. There was always bigger goal behind it (from crafting upgrads to pointing me to black hole) that moved me somewhere and felt rewarding.

I also feel that this game is different from other space sims. On one hand it is much biggers. But on the other hand it is simplified. But in a good way. First of all the gameplay is fast (you dont spent 95% of the time in empty space. Traveling between planets is so fast you dont get bored like in the EVE Online). And you know what ou ar supposed to do from start. You dont feel lost and overwhelemed. So this may be good entry game to the genre even for newcomers.

While the game presents the player with a huge game environment filled with an amazing range of flora, fauna & geology the gameplay isn't as deep. I would go to say it's as shallow as the game is vast. The mechanics of space combat, resource gathering & NPC interaction are simplistic & boring.
After awhile the novelty of discovering a new planet or creature wanes, exposing the feeble game

Besides the planet exploration mechanics which are poor, it also lacks a sufficient enough story that might give meaning to this quintillion planet filled universe. Besides that, the feeling of being the first explorer lost in some world is lost as robots have gone everywhere before you have! So it makes no sense for you to rename the planet if robots have been there before. Finally, the stagnant npcs lack a lot of character, and while pretty to look at could use a lot of improvements. So far I have only played the PS4 version and I have to say I'm quite disappointed with the graphics, especially as it looks smudgy and the fps is poor. I will pick up the pc version soon and see how it runs on my I7-6700k + dual TitanX setup.

No doubt this will be a very divisive game. It's Marmite. Some will love it, some will hate it. Just look at the User Reviews, almost split down middle. I highly recommend RENTING before BUYING if you are unsure.

To give a little background, I have been pretty hyped about this game for the better part of 2 years now but at the same time have toned down my expectations the more previews and early gameplays i have seen. I love sandbox/openworld games but do not like Minecraft.

    Pros:
The exhiliration of flying in and out of planets and systems. Even though many of planets are "somewhat" same looking, there are still many moments when I walk onto the edge of what I think is just a small hill and suddenly see an vast expanse of gigantic cliffs and crevasse with weird and cool looking alien faunas.

Great reward and bait system. Explore -> mine -> learn new tech-> sell-> buy upgrade -> continue over again. Its easy to keep on doing this when you are constantly thinking what lies just beyond the system.

    Cons:
Space combat is horrendous. Extremely difficult to control the ship while aiming with the L stick. Feels like your sitting in a floating twirling cage trying to hit a moving fly on a wall from 100 meters out.

Certain processes gets really repetitive really fast. Same type of structures and contents on each planet. So basically you go to the same looking structure and do the same thing on planet after planet.

Upgrades and thiings to upgrade on seems limited so far. You can upgrade your suit, ship, and gun. Upgrading ship and guns seems somewhat unnecessary even, since you can just buy new ones with already upgraded techs. Also many upgrades will say they give you faster cooldown or harder damage, but its hard to see that in play. Upgrading would be more fun if you can see it having a noticeable affect.

No Man's Sky is a lonely game. To me, that's what makes it so brilliant.

There's no multiplayer in No Man's Sky. The universe you'll get to explore is truly universe-sized, which means the odds of running into another player are practically slim to none. There are creatures that roam the planets, but your presence is largely inconsequential to them, as it is the ecosystem as a whole.

There's no multiplayer in No Man's Sky. The universe you'll get to explore is truly universe-sized, which means the odds of running into another player are practically slim to none. There are creatures that roam the planets, but your presence is largely inconsequential to them, as it is the ecosystem as a whole. The various alien NPCs you'll occasionally encounter speak in languages that, at least initially, are impossible to understand. You have to survive on your own. There's no map to tell you where you are, and nobody will come to rescue you if you get lost. You're completely alone. And if the thought of any of this unnerves you, then this may not be the game for you.

But there's something amazing about being alone in this universe that Hello Games has created. Personally, I find it amazing that the planets I've discovered and the species I've encountered have never been seen by any other player. There's something almost trance-like about flying your spaceship over a mysterious new world, finding a spot to land, and trekking through caves and valleys in search of your next adventure. While some may be disappointed in the lack of base-building (and an overall lack of high-level interactivity with the world,) I find that this actually helps with immersion. You are a stranger in this universe, and your only place of refuge is your ship. It's your only lifeline; it's your shelter during a massive dust storm, your escape plan when you're outnumbered and outgunned, and your only true companion on your journey to discover just what lies in the center of the universe.

And while the trek to the center is the ultimate goal of the game, there's no narrative to tie you to that. If you want, you can spend all your time exploring without any purpose at all. At the beginning of the game, you are offered a choice--would you like occasional objective markers to help guide you through your journey? Or would you like to abandon all guidance and find your own way? The latter option makes the opening hours of the game much more difficult, as you must figure out how to repair your craft and venture out of the solar system on your own. But for players who want to take their time and avoid any hand holding (of which there is very little in the first place,) the option is there.

The gameplay ultimately boils down to mining for resources to keep you alive and upgrade your craft so you can continue further and further into the universe. Each planet has it's own ecosystem, making certain elements difficult to come by in certain areas, which ups the stakes and encourages preparation. Do I have enough fuel to venture to this new planet? What will I encounter when I get there? If it's barren, will I have enough fuel to liftoff again? Maybe it's a lush planet--perhaps I should stop at this space station and trade some of my goods afterwards. Is my suit capable of keeping me warm once night falls on this frozen planet?

In addition to all of that, this is a game about discovering the lore of the universe. While there isn't much of a traditional narrative, bits and pieces of history and inklings of alien languages can be discovered at mysterious structures dotted around the universe. That's all I'll get into about that, to prevent heavy spoilers.

It helps that the presentation is absolutely jaw-dropping. Every randomly-generated galaxy, planet, cavern, ocean, forest, and animal shares a high-contrast, highly color-saturated design that never gets old. I've visited about 10 planets so far, and all of them have been beautiful in their own right. One planet I visited was full of snow-tipped mountaintops that glimmered in the light of the setting sun. Another was almost completely barren, yet there was something beautifully haunting about it's mysterious purple surface that spurred me to investigate. The soundtrack also deserves special mention--it's a moody and contemplative score that ups the ante at just the right moments. It hasn't grown stale and adds an immense amount of atmosphere to an already incredible game. And of course, if you don't like it, you can always turn it off, or opt to listen to your own music (on PS4 via Spotify) instead.

The only things that didn't wow me were the lack of variation in planetary outposts, as well as the less-than-stellar design of some of the NPC Aliens you speak and trade with at these outposts. But considering the massive scale of this game and the high level of quality throughout, these are relatively minor issues.

No Man's Sky is a game about you, your starship, and the universe. It's a game about discovery, atmosphere and immersion. It's unlike anything I've ever played before. If you want to take a break from the fast paced AAA shooters and lose yourself in a gorgeous, essentially endless universe, you'll be hard pressed to do better than No Man's Sky.

I can agree with just about all that I have read both here and on other gaming sites. For me it's a game where I'm truly feeling the "you get out of it what you put into it" vibe - AND, if you had expectations, as "No Man's Sky" was hyped more then this summers blockbuster movie "Suicide Squad," I can see why some are disappointed they didn't become space pirates who could meet up with other people day 1. It's vast, almost daunting in scope and it has a bit of a learning curve with how you outfit your multi-tool, ship and suit. However, it is very rewarding if you take the time to tinker and explore your surroundings. If you are looking to explore planets, and I mean SERIOUSLY explore, then the game is going to be perfect for you. If you are looking for fast action, then you are going to be severely let down. (It can become a slog of mining to fix and upgrade your gear and some of the actions become repetitive, but you find that in a lot of games these days.) I will say that this is definitely a one of a kind experience even though it has a very familiar look and feel to it. Expand

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

The world of No Man's Sky is insanely vast and beautiful, but there’s nothing to do in it! There’s no goal, no destination, no ending, nothing!

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
