First 20 or so hours of my playtime were full of child like amazement: The procedurally generated planets were fresh and captivating (yes, even the barren ones) and farming rocks felt almost relaxing. Even the constant whining of the on-board computer was just a minor irritation. After following the path for 20hrs I found myself grass-hopping through the cosmos just trying to minimize my actual time spent on planets. That is when the realization sank in that the sandbox was devoid of any meaningful toys. Unfortunately the game mechanics that could have given it depth are really shallow - mechanics like interaction with the alien species or space combat. All the advertised features only scratch the surface - you can be what ever you like if you have a really good imagination and you are willing to settle for less.

Space piracy? Go for it, doesn't impact anything.
Explorer diplomat? Go for it, no impact on anything really.
Trader? Go for it, market mechanics are really stale and money is abundant. Oh and you practically need money only for cargo space (new ships and suit).
Mercenary? Well if you read this far you know the drill..

The game simulates the futility of it all pretty well though. Nothing matters. You are insignificant. Crawl into a corner and feel the weight of the endless and empty universe. 60$ is a steep prize for a reality check - I play games to escape reality, not to get reality smeared to my face violently.

Worst game this year by a country mile. Lies, cons and deceits by HG are despicable. They should be ashamed. Barebones gameplay and repetitive grinding are just a few painful examples of why this game is a complete disaster. The ending is perhaps the most insulting part which made me lose it big time. 2/10 and no more. Fix your game HG.

Extremely dissatisfied and disappointed. However, we need to consider that ths game was made by a tiny team. The disappointment was caused by terrible marketing and false advertising. It is an average game with very impressive tech.

The game's graphics are very vibrant in colors and there is a TON to do. In fact you are early in the game just trying to get your ship working and getting more slots to carry more things. However the game feels more like a mining game than anything else. You go somewhere, you need stuff, you find the elements. I have never played Minecraft but I imagine this is a lot of what it is like having seen others play it and talk about it. While this may seem boring to some, keep in mind the items are constantly changing as is the terrain, environment, creatures, and goals. The game is really yours to decide what to do but has a main story. I enjoy the mining aspect but find the one thing no one mentions that leads me to believe some of these reviews are written without playing the actual game as their details are completely lacking of what they don't like. For me it is not having an ability to GO BACK TO YOUR WAYPOINTS. You heard me right, a game this huge has NO WAY to backtrack. That to me seems like a huge facepalm that the developer's did not put that in. So you essentially are 'tagging' places you have been for no real reason except to get points for trade. You better have a good memory of the terrain or you are not getting back. This is extremely frustrating as I found a better 'multi tool' in the first world but needed more coin to get it. Blast off to the space station, trade, come back and .... What the! I can't find where I found the gun at and now randomly I get no settlements that have multi tools. That to me makes the game incredibly frustrating as I want to get better weapons, I can mark where they are, it serves no purpose to find it later.

But the overall fun of the game is good and I would give it a B. I would give it an B+ if they fixed this stupid bug. But the game is fun to play, renders fine for me, and is as huge as listed. So far it is fun as I think the negative hype train was just expecting the coming of Christ from this game and it is not that, but it still is very fun.

A innovate idea badly explored. Great random level design formula but it generates too similar planets with different color palettes with less or more fauna and flora. Very weak combat system and story. Technically poor with low resolution textures and despite the generating formula the deja vu feeling´s always present.

I think this would have made a great early acces title at for the price of 20 euro's. There's some fun and cool moment to be had the first ten hours of the game, but it lacks in a lot of ways. It's very shallow, the universe is empty, the flying is bad, the combat is bad. If you're lucky to land on a beautiful interesting planet, there's some relaxing moments to enjoy the vista's and take screenshots. But that's pretty much the only positives about this game. The day before No Man's Sky came out, I realized that the game would never be able to live up to the hype that it created. How did this revelation come about? Well, that was the day Sean Murray, the game's lead developer, tweeted that the game wouldn't feature multiplayer. This is a problem because in previous interviews, Sean promised that you would be able to play with your friends. Trust me, this isn't the only thing Sean lied about, but there's way more videos and articles out there that go way more in-depth about this topic, so go find those if you want to learn more. Anyways, I was perfectly fine if the game didn't live up to all of the hype, as long as it was still a great game. Well, let me say it's not. It's not a good game, not even an okay one. It's just mediocre. For those who don't know what this game is, it's one of the most ambitious games ever made. The game is meant to give you a glimpse of the size of the universe. So then how big is it? Try 18 quintillion planets to explore big. It delivers on this promise because the open world is huge, so it's safe to say that this is officially the largest game ever created. But as we've seen with past open world games, a larger world could mean that there's less to do. This is definitely a complaint for this game. It's a survival game, but unlike another survival game like Minecraft, you're very limited in what you're able to do. After a strong introduction where you repair your crashed ship, you then have to build a warp drive so you can travel to different galaxies. This is still cool. But after your first time travelling to a different galaxy, the game drops in entertainment value sooooooooooooooo much. From this point on, all you are doing is collecting resources to fuel your warp drive so you can reach the center of the universe. Not only does this get tedious as quickly as the second time you do it, it also progressively gets more frustrating to complete this task. Maybe it's just from personal experience, but almost none of the planets I found had the resources I needed. This meant I had to jump from planet to planet before I finally found what I required. On top of that, you have to deal with the smallest inventory in the world, even with the addition of being able to move items to your ship. When you run out of space, you'll have to find an outpost that may or may not have a store, or go all the way back to the ONE SINGULAR SPACE STATION IN AN ENTIRE SOLAR SYSTEM! It's flat-out annoying, and borderline intolerable. Going back to planets, I'm gonna close off with the game's biggest issue: planetary design. Sean Murray promised that almost every planet was going to be unique, with some desert planets having dunes and little vegetation, or a tropical planet being mostly water and having underwater outposts and bases. None of this is in the game. After my first planet, every single one after that felt barren and empty. I know it sounds like a lot of work trying to make all 18 quintillion planets different, but if they knew they weren't going to be able to deliver that, they shouldn't have promised it. In the end, it comes down to the fact that Hello Games promised way more than they could give with No Man's Sky, and rather gave us a mediocre game that is nowhere near to earning it's $60 asking price. 5/10. Meeting your first few NPC aliens is awesome. The graphics aren't spectacular but the art style is great - the colors and design make you feel like you've stepped into an old sci-fi book cover.

Once you land on your second planet, the magic starts to wear off. Hey, wait, didn't I literally see that EXACT same building on the last planet I was on? Why do all the animals on this new planet look really similar to the animals I saw on my last planet? Wait - I literally saw that exact same plant on the last planet I was on.

Ten hours into the game, you start to see the game for the repetitive slog it is. There is no point to doing anything - the only reason to upgrade is so that you can get more inventory slots so that you can hold more resources to get more upgrades to get more slots to get more resources to get more upgrades to get more slots....wait. Ostensibly the main thing you're supposed to do is explore, but this is pointless, since there's nothing to discover. The buildings are all the same copy-pasted things you've seen before. The same plants are on nearly every planet you go to. Animals are rarely exciting to discover because they look like Sporesque mishmashes of parts, and you begin to realize that you've seen almost all of the parts on other planets before. Occasionally you find a really awesome planet, you get excited, take a few screenshots, and then realize that wait, there's still nothing to really do here, because there's basically no content in the game.

The combat is sluggish and uninspired. The UI is worse. Oh, your ship's shields are down. You have plenty of resources with which to charge them again. But wait - you have to open your inventory menu (which doesn't pause, so you're still being shot at during this), manually select your shield module in your inventory, and then select the charge button. The game records your "journey milestones" such as how far you've walked, how many times you've warped, how many ships you've destroyed, etc. However, whenever you get one, a ten to fifteen second long animation plays that inhibits your controls, but doesn't prevent you from taking damage. Oh, you're fighting and you get a milestone? Well screw you, because we're now going to lock your controls while enemies continue to blast you to death. The UI is absolutely terrible, and every element of gameplay in this game feels like it was designed by an artist - because getting the artistic style correct is clearly prioritized over everything else.

Essentially, everything you do is pointless in this game. If the game were priced at $5-$10, my review would be much different, because none of this would've mattered at that price point. However, this is a $60 full-priced release, and is a total rip-off.

On top of the game's problems already - the developers either totally overpromised, or blatantly lied about, features that didn't make it into the final game. They have also been almost totally radio silent since a few weeks after release. They still continue to release bug fix patches, but say almost nothing other than patch notes. They clearly don't care about their playerbase.

Skip this one altogether - save yourself some time and frustration. And at the same time, you can avoid supporting these terrible developers.

The lifeforms are all too similar. The only difference you'll be seeing is extra limbs and/or larger smaller sizes of the same recopies.

The most important thing worth mentioning is the controversial misleading or false claims about features in the game from the now infamous (and absent), developer. There are no desert planets or large sand worms or unique lifeforms as shown in the trailer. Space battles are very limited compared to the official trailer.

If that isn't enough, the ending slaps you in the face instead. Interested in what the creators of the game might have in store for you at the center of the galaxy? Umm well, here is a hint: watch The Sopranos ending at 1 minute.

This game is probably a 4 or 5 out of 10 but @ £50 I have to knock it down to 3 because value for money is also part of a review score. 90% of the time value for money is not mentioned because most games are priced about what the going rate is. But no so with this game. Even at half the price I wouldn't be happy.

The game is worth the $20 price point suggested by quite a few people but unless there are some earth shattering updates announced, and soon, I may just throw my hat in with those screaming fraud.

I still contend concept art seen in pre-release trailers do not raise to the level of "promised features that never manifested" and none of my disappointment for the game has to do with that oddly contemptuous online debate.

I also don't think the game is in anyway improved by adding hyper realistic planetary physics, the ability to spend uncounted hours slowly crawling from one star to another, the ability to fly into the suns of the different galaxies found, or the lack of in your face baked in multiplayer capabilities as in nearly every discussion of this game pre-release it was driven home pretty hard the experience would be a solitary one that only occasionally saw you stumble across another player.

    What changed my mind from rabid fan boy to disgruntled whiner is as follows;

The game is boring because of how little "procedurally generated content" actually manifests. In a game with no other plot points, story lines, or objectives this was the games only real hook or selling point so to find this concept is only robustly applied to an extremely small set of game details is a major let down.

The phrase "procedurally generated" is used with such a loose relationship to the actual definition of both words it's easy to see why people feel swindled.

The animals you're able to discover all share the same dozen or so basic body types with probably two dozen or more different appendages that just get randomly swapped around but even then only to a certain degree and the flora, ships, NPC alien races, colonial outposts, monoliths, ruins, and plaques all suffer the same problem.

Until it's pointed out the lack of flowing water, sand, or other obviously missing planetary features at first seem to be part of the randomly generated magic of exploration until you discover it's just not present anywhere in the game.

It's at first very hard to upgrade weapons, suit, and ship but then incredibly easy until you discover in an "infinite" universe you've essentially become nigh invincible which is fun but only if there's a reason to wield those abilities and sadly, there's really not, save for the occasional easy to beat NPC pirate ships.

You are constantly being attacked by pirates in space but never see evidence of them in the games otherwise non-existent story line despite constantly running into the same three alien races.

There are many beautiful details that could, and hopefully someday will, lead to rich story lines and sub plots that entice at first only to abruptly cease to serve any point or have any relevance when you discover they're just more repetitive aspects to a planet you will see varied slightly the next time you touch down.

    That's about it.

I would give this game a ten out of ten if there were any small indicators from Hello Games major content patches were even just being planned with tentative dates but the absolute silence from them since the beginning of September, when bug squashing patches were being released almost weekly with zero patch notes, leads me to believe the furious backlash from the gaming community has forced Sony to demand the bug squashing patches but otherwise shutter the entire foray into this game and its creators in an attempt to save face and minimize financial blow back.

The problem I have with that is after a couple hours with the game there just wasn't much to see. Everything looks like everything else, just with minor differences. Besides collecting materials to upgrade your ship, suit and mining gun there just isn't much to do. It might be different if each item required a different process to upgrade but it doesn't. For everything you own you MUST upgrade or fix it by pointing your "mining laser" at a certain element and holding the trigger down. Its an endless loop, and unfortunately for me the endless loop is not even slightly entertaining after the first couple hours. What was I expecting though? After all, Hello Games is an indie developer with very limited money, and man power. To be honest I feel quite stupid. I believed Sean Murray. I believed in what he was trying to sell. After not hearing ANYTHING since a couple days after release I know now Sean is just another "used car salesman" trying to make a living by scamming hard working people who are passionate about video games. I don't know why I actually thought he was one of us. A person who doesn't look at video games as a silly toy for children but an art form. A canvas of artistic expression. I give this game a 5 out of 10 because the first few hours gave me a feeling I don't have the words for. The problem is, that feeling was far from everlasting. Wait until you can borrow or get for 10 or 15 bucks. With what is coming this fall, I don't think people will ever look back at No Man's Sky. Expand

None of this is cool, and I fully understand the backlash this game has got. However, playing the game we ended up with, I can't help but love it. Sure, it could've been so much better (it could've been the game he promised), but taken as is, I really enjoy playing it. I know it's a grinder. You fly from one planet to another and all you do is mine, upload pictures (Beyond Good and Evil, anyone?), try to learn words so you can vaguely understand what the identikit aliens say to you before you choose the wrong option, and feed or run away from very odd creatures. It plays like an indie game for your phone, but on a gargantuan scale. But there's something about it. I love flying my little ship, exploring planets. The simplicity of the game soothes me, it's strangely addictive. Murray's lies aside, most of the negative comments state that the game is repetitive, but that's never done the Dark Souls series, Call of Duty series or any FPS any harm has it? Or is repetition only OK if it involves killing things? Personally I have had quite enough of getting sniped as soon as I spawn in multiplayer shooters, and the levels in most shooters look much the same, yet people are moaning about planets looking the same. Some do, but so far I have been pleasantly surprised at the variety.

I honestly think there is a clear divide in age groups here. Old farts like myself who grew up playing Elite on the ZX Spectrum have always dream't of playing a game life this. It genuinely feels like a truly unique experience playing it, and has a slow, chilled pace to it. It encourages you to sit back and enjoy the journey, not race to the end like you would in most other games, and that is quite addictive. Not many games make me think about them and plan what I will do next. This one does. If you like your games frenetic, violent, and in your face, then this is not for you. But if you fancy a game offering something truly different, something you can actually relax whilst playing, try it. The greatest game of this current generation is The Witcher 3, but once the story is done and every place explored, every monster killed, it's done. This game has no story to speak of- just enough to intrigue, but if you don't chase the main Atlas quest, you have a game you can always dip into, and you will NEVER see all it has to offer. I love it!

It's a real shame that so many people don't get the relaxing nature of NMS. The whole point is exploration and I love the randomness of the planets. This is not the game for the COD generation as this requires patience and a little role play on behalf of the player. Its a pity that this game pushes so many boundaries yet it will be remembered for what it doesn't have rather than the imagination and freedom that it does have.

I've played games for 40 years now, and relatively few have held my attention the way NMS does. It's not fair or even realistic to compare this game to others, such as Minecraft, unless it is in the context of it being something new and different. This is not a world-building game like Minecraft. It's not a story-driven FPS like Half Life. It's something all its own. Hello Games have created something very special in No Man's Sky, and it is unfair to give it low marks because it doesn't live up to the expectations of everyone out there that was looking for the 'be all and end all' universe sandbox game. Save your cries of "Sean lied to us!", and grow up. No Man's Sky is a work of art, and I am absolutely sure that Sean Murray and Hello Games are not done with their painting yet. Yes, it was probably released a bit too soon. Yes, it could use additional content. Yes, there are some bugs. But in the end, this game held the attention of a 50 year old rather jaded gamer, and I'm going back to play it again tonight. No Man's Sky is a GOOD game. Expand

He absolutely lead us to believe it had multiplayer gameplay. Ironically, if they actually had multiplayer it would have helped this game tremendously.

The procedural generation of planets is pretty cool and at times I've been wowed by what I've come across, but the real problem is the gameplay just kind of sucks. It relies heavily on crafting, but the crafting is pretty meh. There is some fighting, but it's basically the same stuff over and over and the fighting itself is also very meh. The universe, lore, and NPCs are also very meh, so the only really good thing is the procedural generation. I honestly don't think the title is really salvagable (there's talk of base building, but who wants to stay on one planet), and I'm not sure Hello Games will have much cred after this title, so it's probably going to be a interesting one off.

Irrespective of what was or wasn't promised in the marketing hype leading up to the release, No Man's Sky is fundamentally dishonest. This could very well have become my new favourite game of all time.
I spent a majority of the day I got it playing it, and spent a further few hours the following day on the game as well. However, I have not touched it since then and have no intention to either.
    I'll start with the good:
-The planets you find in this game have the potential to be gorgeous and full of life. Truly, some breathtaking sites.
-Learning alien languages word by word is an interesting, yet fun concept. and can offer up better trades for you.
-The overall look of the 'solar systems' and galaxies is, once again, breathtaking to say the least.
And now, we journey to the other side of things:
-Yes, there are some amazing planets, but they are few and far between all the barren ones you will come across, not to mention toxic, hot or freezing ones that take away you life support power.
-The creatures you encounter are nothing like those in the trailer. They are procedurally generated to provide new combinations, but they often looked mashed together. Kind of like when you play with lego when you're younger and put different pieces together to make something entirely new, only for it to be like something you made earlier.
-Space combat is, once again, nothing like the trailer. It is oftentimes tedious and difficult early on in the game.
-No factions like in the trailer. Maybe there is factions in the game, but none that are apparent to the player, and certainly none you can join.
-All the ships are the same just with more slots for your inventory. There are no advantages to specific ones otherwise.
-No multiplayer at all. Personally, not a fan of multiplayer games but coming across other players would have been nice and the fact it was advertised and then turned out not to have it was rather...disappointing.
Overall, I did not enjoy this game and find too many issues to consider giving it higher than a 4.
Do I think it's a bad game? No.
Do I think it's overpriced and lacking in multiple areas? Yes.
Had this game been a £20, early access title on steam, I would probably love it, but a £50 game on the PS4 is far too much for something horrendously lacking in features that may come in future updates.
Buy this game when it's on sale, but don't fork out anything above £30, as I truly do not believe it to be worth it.

A universe that could be explored for infinity, an entire lifetime for myself literally! During the buildup and hype surrounding this game I was wondering what the premise of this game actually was. Well, I downloaded No Man’s Sky off of the PlayStation store, because it was sold out in all of the gaming stores in Ames, Iowa. The downloading portion only took about thirty minutes, which was probably one of the only things I was pleased with. So sad to say it folks, but this game was a big disappointment in my eyes. When I first started playing the game, there was a few things that caught my eye. Graphics, flying the ship, and exploring was really exciting. After a few hours of not knowing what was going on, and no real mission driven plot, plus the terrible soundtrack, I was fed up! I didn’t mention the very tedious mining and collecting of resources to do anything, and when I say very tedious I mean that with my entire heart. Plus not to mention exploring and time it takes to get places in the game play was ridiculous! Even when you did collect enough resources to get an upgrade, it was a sad disappointment. Even upgrading your own ship, which is a big accomplishment in the game, offered nothing special except more slots for mindless resources. Even the fighting gameplay with your ship is very difficult and almost impossible to hit a target flying through space with you. This game was defiantly not for a person like myself. I would say this is more driven to people that do not mind taking a long time collecting resources, and really figuring out the game for themselves. This game is not going to hold your hand, and push you in to the right direction. You are going to have to spend a lot of time finding your way, which is why I did not enjoy this game past a few hours. Overall I am going to give this game a 4 out of 10, and wouldn’t recommend it to anyone at 60 dollars. Wait for it to go down to 20 dollars. Expand

Ok, so we all know why you are here looking for a review. The hype and the concept of the game made you want an amazing game but the result have been bashed from here to kingdom come. Can it be true? Is it a bad game? And can it be that bad?

I think we need to start to talk about the definition of a game first. What is a game (good or bad)?
Most people think that a game need to have direction… it does not.

From Merriam Webster we find this.

    Definition of a game:
activity engaged in for diversion or amusement.
    And
a physical or mental activity or contest that has rules and that people do for pleasure

Ok, is No mans sky a game? Sure. it is has a rule set and it is a diversion. The thing that we can take away for the remainder of this review is the part: "…diversion or amusement" and "… do for pleasure".

This is my opinion. I play No man's sky and enjoy it. I could probably enjoy it a lot more if there were deeper mechanics for trade and crafting… but then again I do not enjoy mine craft for extended periods of time .

No Man's sky, for me, is all about a sense of wonder. i usually play the game for about an hour at the time before i turn it of. But the game-session stays with me in my mind for days. Last night I entered the atmosphere of a water planet with only small islands here and there, and. When I landed the game prompted me that the planet had abundant fauna. But I couldn't find any animals on the island I was on, and not the three I visited next. I couldn't see any water dwellers or birds either.

So, since I turned the game of I have been thinking of where they are hiding. There should be plenty, are they all underground? Have I just not found a large enough island? No Man's sky is all about this sense of wonder and mystery. Sure it gets repetitive. I am not chasing the path of atlas anymore, or even try to upgrade my ship. I just walk around, look at things and truly enjoy my self.

Could No man's sky be more? Sure, and I hope it will. But even when they add I will probably still play sessions for the sense of wonder. And I hope that I never ever get to the center of the galaxy.

I give this game a 7 because of course there are issues. But this game, for me give me something totally different than any other game I have played for a while. And for that No Man's sky deserve all praise.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. NMS feels like a cheap early access survival game rushed out and made on a small budget...except it was released as a final product for $60 after three years, two delays and with the backing of a major publisher...oh dear.

The two big selling points of NMS were the sheer number of randomly generated planets and the sense of exploration and discovery of a practically infinite number of worlds. The problem is while buzz words like "procedurally generated" sounds good on paper, the reality of that means everything looks and acts practically the same. There was not one memorable thing about any of the planets I visited or reason to ever go back. They all have the same generic resources, mined from the same generic nods, scattered about the same generic wastelands. You can't build any structures or settle down on a particular planet, only adding to the disposable and forgettable nature of them.

Perhaps not having the "ending" spoiled might have provided some sense of drive or purpose for me to keep playing, however I'd rather know there wasn't going to be a payoff to save myself the time and frustration. Some say the reward is in the journey and not the destination, but this is simply not a journey worth taking in my opinion. I went into this with low expectations after hearing all the controversy and even then I found it interminably dull and underwhelming.

Judging the game by itself I probably would have given it a 4 at best, however I feel it would be remiss not to take the marketing and PR debacle into account. I didn't pay much attention to the game leading up to release, but looking back now at all the documented interviews and demonstrations for the game, I simply cannot see it as anything but misleading at best if not outright lying at worst. Regardless of intention or malice Sean Murray/Hello Games should be held accountable for their actions along with Sony for allowing things to get out of control if not outright encouraging it.

I give No Man's Sky a 0/10 for being a boring, sub-par game and completely unacceptable business practices on the part of both the developer and publisher.

(full disclosure: mine was a rental copy, played for three hours straight before calling it quits due to myself and everyone watching being put to sleep)

There's a lot of creative criticism I could give, but it's just awful. No Man's Sky is an entire universe in the hands of the player to do what they want, but holy cow **** is it repetitive. All the planets are the same. All of them. sure, one has aluminum and the other has gold and by golly this one has omegon! but its the same thing over and over and over again. You will get bored of it in roughly 5 hours. The combat systems boring, there's only 3 races of alien, and that's it. But what about a few positives? Well, the graphics are fantastic, and there's over 14 quintilian planets (even though they're all unfathomably similar) and thats it. Nice graphics and many planets. There's also the 'galactic core' but it takes forever to get there. It's not a Journey, its just moving the courser 1/1500th of the way there and holding X. Keep in mind, this game is 60$. No Man's Sky Image This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No man's Sky fails in a few areas (1). Cannot Scan bird life from ground without killing a bird , there is often no way to target these birds until you find a targeting updgrade which I cannot build due to needing aqua spheres and it means you have to waste a lot of time shooting then finding the thing you killed. (2) cannot take upgrades or stuff on your tools and ships to your new ship or weapon which is rather stupid if its a crafting game as you would have the know how on how to uninstall something you equipped. (3) Rewards from NPCs are not rewards as you can find a better Multi-tool on occasion about 5 seconds after talking to an NPC who upgraeds your multi-tool. (4) cannot buy technology or things to craft. (5) evil glitch that makes planets 100% and even if you have got the creatures on the planet to 100% in the 1.3 patch you can't redeem it meaning my zoology can't go up and stops the platinum trophy already reached milestones for most of the game. (6) No way to mark or map areas. (7) No way to visit previous outposts. 8 Ship combat has no way to lock on enemy currently (unless you need an upgrade of some form), Ship combat also slows down your ship. 9. Sometimes when you scan a new life form it won't register to records. 10. No real civilzations of alien life e.g proper towns. 11. Creatures can feel samely after visting a couple of planets. 12 finding all creatures on a planet is tedious and boring as it took me 8 hours to find all the species on a planet after leaving the first solar system then coming back to it later and then I couldn't upload it to get a +1 to my zoology when a game wastes my time its going to get a bad score. 13 No out posts or beacons marks so you can head straight for one to do 1 of the games 4 boring mini missions (shelter, montolith etc). 14 no way to mark a waypoint for later so crashed ships are often just broken dreams. (It gets a six for it can be relaxing, the annoying birds could be seen as a crap mini game (what i mean by this is if you wanted to play a pacafist is that you can't as you won't be able to scan birds) "Can i hit this" and the space travel is good as Xs do mark where you have been in the universe which makes it seem pirate like if not cliche, I am disappointed in myself however for not waiting for review like I normally do, as it seems a costly mistake considering I got this instead of other games for birthday. In the 1.08 update this game loses a futher point for not fixing my problem with the game after 3 patches so it goes from an okay 6 to a desired pass it by. if it had fixed my problem with the game by now the record glitch then it might have moved up a point but i am not going to further review this game ... decided to review as of 16/09/2016 again and made my mind up that's its a relaxation simulator its fine to play in small amounts when you just want something to look at but very little to do its gained two points as a way to relax in short intervals. The birds can also now be scanned but the 100% zoology glitch is still there I only lost 1 planet but I lost a lot of hours getting it to 100% so i am still a little annoyed.

Hope someone sues them as they lied to sell a product. If you want to support money hungry dick heads that only care about wealth and making customers unsatisfied this is your game.

The worst case of "bait and switch" in the last 20 years. Almost nothing from E3 is in this game. Story is non existing, you can't interact with others as promised, you can't join giant space battles as promised, its just a glorified resource gathering game. Would have considered it a better game had it come out at the $20 that should have.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Game is novel only in that small team made an algorithm generate a boring and repetitive game with interesting generated music.

What Can't One Do in NO MAN'S SKY?

    Can I keep pets? NO
    Can I breed animals? NO
Can I build a base? NO
Can I play with friends? NO
Can I visit home worlds of advanced alien races or civilizations? NO
Can I recruit crew members? NO
Can I keep more than one ship? NO
Can I sell my ship? NO
Can I crash my ship? NO
Can I influence the other races in any way? NO
Can I craft interesting weapons? NO
Is the lore behind alien races interesting? NO

Is NMS a Sandbox? No, you can't really edit or change the world.

Are there noteworthy random events? No. NMS has no special events. Everything the game is going to do is hard coded. Expect major patches with huge changes to the game engine / platform if there is even a remote possibility of getting any real special events.

Visual content is generated but the theme is always the same. Every planet looks like a super-saturated overblown colors with a severely limited color pallet. All the NPCs are soulless. All NPC bases look the same. NPC conversations are pathetic.

All planets have the same gravity. Why? Who would go through all this procedurally generated junk and overlook this.

Scientist? Pirate? Trader? Explorer? No difference. You have to manage a stupid-small inventory, manually deal with consumables. Oregon Trail had more strategy going for it than this.

Get to the middle. Yep. That's the goal. Generated a quintillion worlds and the center of it all is the goal.

Why is space so full of "junk" in this made up universe? There is stuff everywhere. I guess once someone feels content worth looking at is generate-able they just go all in with it.

No instructions - come into a battle (distress signal), pick a side, no communications, no instructions

Scanner is useless. You find random strange things. No rhyme or reason as to what gets picked up from space either. Finding things like black holes, space anomalies and space stations is utterly annoying.

    Starships have no purpose.

Space combat system is very weak. Much prefer Wing Commander I to this No Man's Sky business

All conversations take a stupid long time to get to the meat. For a repetitive game all time wasting is hugely annoying.

Upgrade system is horrific. Things can't be moved easily or at all. Things you destroy can't be remade. Items you have and destroy and you don't have the blueprint you can't remake. You can't reverse engineer.

No scanner enhancements of significance for the ship.

No notion of a base or a garage. This is totally needed. Also why only allow one ship at a time? Abandoned ships have disappeared on me before I could transfer inventory.

Mapping system is utterly inferior. Just trying to follow star roads is a painful annoying experience.

With the level of technology in this game the scanning and mapping system (or utter lack thereof) is idiotic.
Flying animals defy physics - not possible. Planet temperatures where Nitrogen and CO2 would be frozen can still have "rain". Element system is idiotic. Why even bother with real element names? All the trades, upgrades and finding broken ships are always idiotically close in size and value of the current ship. What really stinks is when you have a 48 slot ships most of the offers have less than 48 if trying to trade up. No hovering. This is horrific. The NPCs are utterly one dimensional. They are empty, shallow and useless. They also talk very slow and it takes forever to burn through talking with them. If you have to restore from a last save to correct a conversation mistake it takes a long, long time. The fact nothing auto-recharges in a world of warp-drives is idiotic. Crime and punishment is stupid. Sentinels are stupid. The black hole shortcuts are not shortcuts. The Atlas path ending is stupid. All the dialogue for the 10 stops and the 11th Atlas stop is hipster idiot drivel The music tries to have "gravitas" and use base to make dumb situations seem cool. The Atlas path has an entity that often looks like an ridiculous Pokémon ball. I would honestly rather re-play Wing Commander I & II than suffer this game. Every planet out of the 18 quintillion has been discovered before and is littered with alien trash. 18 quintillion planets and only 3 (or 4 races including the nameless faceless speechless one dimensional loser character one is portraying). The word list for each language is the same. For anyone completionist or OCD this game would be nightmarish. You can buy plans from Polo that cost up to 2,000,000 and keep getting the same trash plans you already have. And for junk. Also Omega gear is only for a certain few upgrades. Not knowing easily which is best for each system and best not being easy to identify is just foolishness.

Honestly, I liked the game, I would give it a 7/10, until I started noticing all the missing promised features. For me, this was the culprit of all that is wrong with the game industry nowadays. Being a programmer and coder myself, I understand game development is a complex process, and some features have to be removed. The thing is days prior to launch Sean was still talking about features that were not in-game. Furthermore, the videos with all the exposed lies are still on the steam page as if that was the actual game you would play if you purchase. But what really makes me mad and made me give it a 3/10 is there has been no honest response to all the criticism the game has had, and no honest feedback on what it will truly be, and what it will not be. (For example, Sean Murray has not given a single direct statement about players not being able to meet). Sad to see an indie studio I had so much faith in, fall into the toxic marketing and unhonest behavior that is now so commonplace in the gaming industry, with very few exceptions.

Before launch, Sean Murray was constatly tweeting about his game, feeding the hype. After launch, it has been 3 weeks with no news from him, and no public communications regarding the missing features. That is very unprofessional

In many ways the victim of its own lofty goals and optimistic hyperbole, in addition to the rigors of game development, the No Man's Sky may not be the game many people were expecting, but it is nonetheless deserving of being considered for what it is, as well as what it is not. It truly is not a game for everybody, or even most people, but for those destined to fall to its charms, it isIn many ways the victim of its own lofty goals and optimistic hyperbole, in addition to the rigors of game development, the No Man's Sky may not be the game many people were expecting, but it is nonetheless deserving of being considered for what it is, as well as what it is not. It truly is not a game for everybody, or even most people, but for those destined to fall to its charms, it is nothing short of revelatory.

So let's begin with what it is not, which is Everything. It is not an endlessly involving, be-all-end-all, behemoth of a game. It is not a Call of Duty filling wrapped in a Skyrim tortilla and flavored with EVE Online and Star Citizen spices. It does not have 18 quintillion wholly unique worlds, with each one entirely different from the next. It is not a game that will hold your hand; it has neither the charming simplicity of a Mario game nor the soul-hardening depth of Dark Souls. It has a storyline of sorts to follow, but there is nothing genuinely world shattering. It is not Minecraft in space. It is not a multiplayer game, though the universe is shared. Nothing you ever do or see will ever be witnessed by anyone, ever, except through screen shots and the nigh impossible chance of crossing paths with another wanderer.

What it is, however, is something that is rarely seen in video games, or indeed any medium, and that is an invitation to explore and ponder. It strands you in outer space, with such an impossible distance to cover that one cannot help but relate that scale to their own existence and, if one is willing to ask such a question, ponder their own amazing insignificance, which to the best of my knowledge has rarely, if ever, been proposed in an interactive format normally focused on player empowerment. No Man's Sky is unflinching in its nihilism -- you will discover animals who will never be seen again, you will see vistas that will exist afterward only in your memory, and the game has no sympathy for the fleeting nature of your existence within it. It is a game built simultaneously on hope and hopelessness -- the anticipation of a powerful moment where the stars (figuratively) align, tempered with the knowledge that this is but a temporary elation.

In less grandiose terms, one can describe No Man's Sky as a stellar walking simulator without the narrative elements. It is the high tech equivalent of exploring via the Google Maps Street View, possibly while on an illicit substance. You are not here to save this universe, merely to observe it, and contemplate.

And, admittedly, make an awful lot of very pretty desktop wallpapers.

So, no, this game is by no means for everybody, or even most people. For me, it was an avenue to introduce my young children to the concept of the universe at large, the absurd scale by which we are such an insignificant speck in both time and space that the odds of us understanding anything concrete is infinitesimal. And it has so sparked their interest that instead of reading Hello Kitty for bedtime, we have a giant book of scientific facts; instead of dolls, my daughter asked for a telescope; instead of ninjas, they want to be scientists and astronauts when they grow up.

I guess, at the end, there should be a numerical value placed on this review, but I'm torn. If a review is to be taken as an individual's personal response to a piece of art, then I would have a hard time giving No Man's Sky less than a perfect 10. The places it has taken my family, and the questions it has made me ask of myself, are invaluable. If, on the other hand, the purpose of a review is to serve as a guidepost for others, then I must more objectively temper my feelings and account for the occasional glitches and crashes, the repetitiveness of the worlds over time, and the dearth of activities beyond exploration and occasional combat and crafting; if that is the route I am to take, I would err a bit lower, as not everyone will fall under the circumstances by which the game has come to mean so much to me.

And then I say to heck with it. This game is magical, and I argue that it transcends the normal expectations of the medium. I give it a 10.

There are over 65,000 unique creatures and plants, and three unique alien races that interact with the player, leading him or her on a voyage to the galactic center, or on a quest to uncover the game's hidden lore.

As the game progresses, you rebuild your starship and engage in discovery, trading or combat, all of which help you improve your starship, suit and weaponry. Each improvement allows you to travel farther and explore more dangerous worlds and new star systems in a journey whose goal is determined by you. You may follow the directions of the Atlas, the galaxy's mysterious and powerful artificial intelligence, or you may follow the advice of Nada and Polo, a Gek scientist and a Korvax priest who are investigating a strange galactic mystery. Alternatively, you may follow your own path, ignoring the game's major NPC characters and making your own story.

For those who want a mellow space exploration game that gives you new vistas every time you land on a new planet, this game may be for you. However, it is not a game for everyone. Skyrim in space this is not, nor is it a game you can play with your friends. The game is huge - literally universal in size, and seeing evidence of anyone else in the game is quite rare. Unfortunately, many people desperately wanted this game to be something it was never intended to be, hence the bad reviews. But for those of us who have realistic expectations for a relaxing game of galactic exploration, No Man's Sky has a lifetime of content.

A month into my journey with No Man's Sky, I continue to find the game fascinating every time I boot it up. There is a lot to like here, if you're the kind of player the game was intended for. The game did have some bugs at first, but there have already been a number of updates that have brought the game up to speed. The developers have committed to bringing in content that was not ready for the game's release, and they intend to add new features in free updates, showing an ongoing commitment to the game.

    Points to note:
The pointlessness of your continue playing dawns on you once you reach a certain point - either it's finding new planets for the sake of it or upgrading ship / suit inventory...for the sake of it, heading to the centre is no longer a desirable goal after reading what awaits you.
Gameplay is shallow and cumbersome, character movement is too slow, shooting is unrewarding and the FOV is too narrow.
Ship flying is fun until you get into space, space combat is well below average and consists of constantly turning 180 degrees to try to track the impossibly nimble enemies.
Exploration is rewarding fir the first few hours, new creatures and planetscapes are genuinely cool and awe - inspiring for the first dozen or so planets, it soon becomes obvious there isn't the variety you were hoping for.
The pop-in with the terrain is quite sever on some planets on PS4 destroying any sense of atmosphere.
The music is either quite good when it pumps up or not really noticeable, happy with the game sounds apart from the constant reminders about suit monitors.

They are right in saying that every planet is almost different, the only differences I see in the lighting and the texture. If you actually plan to beat this game, you should know that you will spending hours and hours crafting the same item over and over again. Crafting this item will involve pointing a handheld laser beam at a few different kinds of rocks. There's no skill or thinking required. You just walk around like a robot mining the same materials over and over again.

I was so excited for this game. For years. I even fooled myself into thinking I liked it for the first 10 hours. But it's a terrible, terrible game. There's nothing here for anyone. Please don't get this game.

Misleading marketing and outright lies by the developers and publishers leading up to release built up expectations for a game that doesn't exist. No Man's Sky is a bugfest of titanic proportions. The gameplay is fractured and repetitive, with a play loop that gets boring within an hour. Despite all of this the game costs 60 dollars. DO NOT BUY!

Edit: (9-5-2016) Around 100 hours of gameplay and I have "finished" the game. This "ending" is disappointing and unsatisfying. Changed my rating from 9 to 6.

I read a lot about repetition in this game being very stale. From one perspective, that's perfectly understandable, but perhaps I choose a different point of view. For example, I think GTA and COD are overwhelmingly stale and repetitive. MOBA games are very repetitive, Destiny is the very definition of repetitive; yet many people like those games and while consistently complaining about them still religiously play them. Thus my review recommends that gamer's embrace the new idea's No Man's Sky is trying to create. See if you can't join the developers in the feelings that they have about this game. Though, read GameSpot's review for a precise description.

This game exceeds my expectations and is an example I will use henceforth of how one can disagree with the critics. We all know the internet mob is emotional and undependable, but the real surprise for me is that even my most trusted critics, while making great points, don't rate this game high enough in my opinion. It's fantastic and I'm thoroughly excited about it.

Perhaps since I kept out of social media and read some weekly articles over time, I was never really on the melodramatic hype wagon like everyone else. Though most assuredly I was hyped about this game for almost a year. MOST THINGS that Sean Murray talked about is in the game. Speaking from just over 20 hours of game play, I feel he was very precise and gracefully cautious with his details. The more he puts out on topic of this game and the more I learn about his team, the better I understand what this game is about. Thus I find a certain way of enjoying it that seems totally new and fresh to me. It's not really like any other game, in a big picture kind of way.

Pros: It's a lot of fun to fly around space and in and out planets/space stations/solar systems. I like discovering new plants, regions, animals, resources, aliens, and languages. The game has no tutorial, which to me, thrust me into a complete "explorer type" experience. Basically, throwing me into a unforgiving universe and forcing me to figure s*** out for myself. Thus, I teach myself damn near everything and therefor have a more personal connection with my own gaming story line, both good and bad.

Cons: Combat is meh, I feel Space Combat is fun, but still meh. Loneliness is a good and bad thing, comparable to my feelings when playing Shadow of the Colossus. The biggest con is of course not having multiplayer. But, that does disagree with the founding intention of the dev's plan for the game, so I tend to be forgiving of this aspect as I like the current "explorer type" experience.

I think this game is pretty fun. It does get boring sometimes, but some other games do that as well. I like flying around in my ship and exploring all the different planets. The only problem with it is that Hello games lied about a lot of really cool features. I hope this game gets updated and gets new features, but for now, I think it's really fun. 8/10

Good relaxing exploration game. I can sit down and discover new planets for an hour or two in the evening. Some are barren and unfriendly some are lush and filled with life. Is it intense and super on gameplay, no. However it's still an awesome experience flying around a universe filled with various animals, aliens, plants etc.

as someone who spent 60 USDs on this, i learned the hard way to never go digital unless we're talking serious sales, the game at the current state of it (and honestly, i'd say at foreseeable future) is worth $25 at maximum.

when you've expected a vibrant world you're hit with the staticness of it, the crushing loneliness makes for some terrible game, some may call it a "relaxing" experience, but i don't, there is nothing of character in the entirety of the game, everything and everyone you meet is as boring as the rocks you'll mine for iron, i tried to make my own fun by learning the languages of the races (one of very rare pros) but that got old quickly once i learned that it takes more than 400 words for each race (3+ atlas), something even the game recognizes by giving you the top rank in this category at about 250 words, interloper.

to add to an already broken game, if you've seen a water planet, a rock planet, garden world and an ice planet, you've seen it all now.

for now, the only thing you should do to this game is a) stay away from it if you know about it (75% of those who may read this) or b) wait for a good sale (50% at least) before getting a copy, and NOT DIGITAL, you'll grow tired of it before you know.

have fun if you can, best hopes.

Yes, there is really little if any story to this game and I found the journey to Atlas puzzling, interesting, and lacking of many storybook ideas, which surely was intentional. This game was never meant to be a story as much as it was an exploration. I would have given this game an 8 had I not run into issues with reaching Atlas and the galactic core. This is a £20 game selling for £50. It's a series of small mini games; mining, shooting and flying etc. that have no real threat or expectation of danger. I've sunk around 10 hours into this game but don't really feel any desire to go back.

This title is just a pile of boring grind which would make gold miners of Asian MMOs cry in tears of horror and it doesn't deliver almost anything you have seen on the trailer videos.

Do you expect to see huge well constructed species like in the trailers ?? Forget it - you will get clearly generated garbage like a frog with horse legs or simply creatures that look like 4 anatomy organs mixed together. Trailers have shown superb looking creatures which resembled some evolutionary path, but this is not what the game delivers. Instead you will get nonsensical (incredibly stupid AI) creatures that just run around frantically like they just took cocaine.

Do you expect unique planets with flora which is unique ? well you will get color` change. That is pretty much all you get plus minus few changes which are so generic that they are unnoticeable.

Do you expect multiplayer? - not there

Do you expect unique settlements? - well you get few settlements that just repeat over and over and over and look exactly the same on each planet based only by the faction.

Do you expect meaningful interaction with the ingame factions? Build relationships ??? Well - they are not meaningful in any way, but more just for leveling them up, so you can buy more things from them. Your place and role in the universe is ultimately pointless.

Do you expect to explore planets where nobody has ever been? Not in this game either - all planets are under some faction as they need some settlements ect, so you can buy slots for your inventory...

Do you expect meaningful crafting which involves real logic or thought? Nope - only mindless slot management and grind for the same resources over and over and over and over and over and over and over... You get the point.

To summarize - this game is worth 10 bucks at best and doesn't deliver almost anything Hello games promised. Companies like Hello Games should be sued until they are blue in their face for ruining the game industry and screwing over the player base.

I went into no man’s sky with low expectations... And at first no man’s sky exceeded these expectations...
Everyone starts on a random planet at the edge of the universe, you’re tasked with collecting materials to repair your ship…
This is a great tutorial to help you understand the basics of the game…
You then go to points in the galaxy you’re in for other parts to give an understanding of the game even more… and the further you go the more intriguing this game gets…
And once you finally have all of your ship parts, the universe is yours to either explore freely or travel towards the center of the universe…
To travel towards the center you need materials to craft up to power cells…
These materials are all reasonably accessible.. some more abundant than others depending on the planet you visit…
1 power cell will let you travel 100-300 light years at a time to a different planetary system..
You can also explore these planets for plant and animal species, which is really fun to do initially…
But it doesn’t take long for the no man’s sky game play loop to get tiring…
Wide as an Ocean, deep as a puddle…
I don’t care that animals have different mixtures of body parts or plants have slight variations than plants on other planets..
Every animal... every plant... they are all the same thing with different skins… that’s it... and the skin isn’t even that different most of the time..
I find procedural generation to be one of the laziest forms of game design and roll my eyes every time I hear the phrase and no man’s sky is a prime example of why…
This is 40 hours of the same thing….
All you do is repeat the first 2 hours of the game 20 times…
These worlds are not alive... animals aren’t eating, sleeping, fighting, mating… they’re just there..
walking around looking the animals on earth with parts of other animals from earth…
doing nothing but occasionally attacking you…
Don’t get me wrong, I was in a trance for a good 15 hours playing no man’s sky, and 15 hours is well worth $60, but the game was just not intriguing enough to keep me wanting to continue forward…
I shouldn’t have a planet figured out before I even set foot on it…
But here I was, I knew what to look for to get certain materials, because again these planets are all the same only differing in color or elemental danger that never really mattered...
and once you do get sucked into the game, you have to deal with these annoying sentinel creatures that shoot you for mining materials…
A very unnecessary nuisance that I believe ruins the potential Zen like experience no man sky has going for it…
you can also find ship and mining tool upgrades on these planets as well as these word stones to help you understand the alien creatures that inhabit a trading station in every star system that you can use to sell valuable materials and purchase materials needed to craft a new item or upgrade…
These stations also have other galactic travelers that you can sell items to, buy from, or purchase their ship from…
No man’s sky is a very relaxing and casual experience, simple loop, simple crafting, and may be one of those games you return to every now and then when you’re bored…
But its uninteresting beyond the first couple of hours and at the end of the day is just another lazy feeling procedurally generated survival game grind fest…
    I give no man’s sky a 7/10

While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
