I'm very glad that Hello Games has stuck by this game and improved it so much. But they will never, and should never, live down the false advertising that resulted in people like me paying $60 for a game that was years away from having all the promised features.

I honestly love this game. It offers many approaches to play it, endless gameplay and really innovative components. These developers releases patches with new features for free, while nowdays most of the companies does it with paid dlcs. I don't really understand these low point and FOR WHOEVER READS THIS REVIEWS REMEMBER THAT THIS GAME IS CHANGED A LOT IN THE LAST YEARS!!
    I simply love it.

The game has had massive improvements to its gameplay. it has a solid story, good development, co-op to a degree, and base building. Vehicles, weapons, and space combat has improved. "There is no place in your inventory" ... I can resume the game to this sentence. And you lose the item if you do not have any place! why we can not have the item on the ground???
I spent 1 hour to craft item to unlock a suit amelioration just to... lose it, a bug! the item is not in my inventory...
I stopped playing to this game because the inventory system, it is so annoying, even the UI. And the crafting system, not easy to know what you can do, can not do.

But after years of the team not giving up we have No Man Sky 2019, which is not only a very different game to what was released in 2016, but its is one of the most original, technically impressive and even industry leading games , this generation. There is almost infinite things to do in this game , and its great fun, but the fact you can do it all in VR is what elevates this game to a 10/10. Just like RE7 its a great game on its own , but when you are able to feel like you are in the world and the sense of immersion and atmosphere is that realistic, it elevates the whole experience. the only negative I could give the game today is that it is a bit Blurry on PSVR, ive seen many other games look much sharper on PSVR which makes me wonder in they are taking advantage of the PS4 Pro hardware yet.. Its not entirely fair to mark a game down for the hardware limitations with such new tech, though, so for me the game sits at 10/10 in 2019. Expand

Really bad designed and finished. My feeling is the entire universe is not running without the player. All the aliens, animals in this game are living aimlessly. Not ever two NPCs in game are connected to each other. Basically, it's a Minecraft-like space game without crafting, end dragon, modding and multi-playing, but with extra bugs. I would say it worth 8 score if it cost only $20.

It's NOT straight forward, you have to mix the resources together to make something else useful. Then you repeat repeat repeat until you have 4 things useful THEN you mix the 4 things useful to make something that works. All with virtually no guidance or instructions. I have only been to five separate star systems and my exo-suit already has thirty slots. My Spaceship on the other hand only has nineteen but I am saving up for a ship that has twenty-eight. The graphics are about as good as your going to get for the scope of the game. The combat is secondary to the exploration so don't go into this game expecting COD style of combat. The resource system is ok given that you will be constantly using them if you take your sweet time exploring a planet (I usually take an hour or two). Since the ships and weapons come with upgrades already built in, you don't really have to worry about building upgrades right off the bat. If you do find upgrades that are better then what are currently on the weapon then just dismantle and craft the better ones, same thing with ships ect. The mix of planets, animals, different aliens make this game enjoyable but still feel like something is missing. For all these people who have been complaining about the game, they need to put more time in before reviewing. It's not fair to the developers and not fair to other gamers coming here for a n honest opinion. Expand

Let me be clear that I just bought this game, and knew about the original false advertisement debacle, but decided to give it a shot anyway based on YouTube vids saying it is now worth a shot, it is not.

The game is an absolute rotting corpse of glitches. It's been 3 years, and you can play games made on steam in early access with 1/50th the money that look better and have none of the game breaking bugs. Some of my own include: the entire farming system is broken (plant growth timers reset to full every 5 seconds, making farming, a major aspect of the game undoable), constant falling through the map, instant death upon exiting craft (>10 occurrences), enemies attacking through walls, animal enemies biting/killing you from the other side of the map, random total loss of inventory items, map markers that lead nowhere, quest starts which don't trigger, crashing and constant ugly visual issue such as planet corona shining through starship walls. In a game built by massive pansies who didn't want it to be about killing/combat (guns and violence are yucky and mean!) and whos procedural generation leaves you with bland boring planets, the only option for fun is survival gameplay. These glitches make survival (where you loose items you spent hours on) and permadeath mode impossible. I have a brand new PS4, they have had 3 years to fix issues, its absolutely inexcusable.

As I said earlier, the "exploration" based gameplay is worthless. I have consistently encountered the same plants/features/animals in different color schemes on a vast number of worlds. Animals bumble around no further than 25M from the player before popping out of existence, and nothing about them appears lifelike. You'll never find them pooping, eating, mating, sleeping, fighting, NOTHING. For a game based on exploring the "wonders of the universe" and not combat, again, you would expect giving you something to look at instead of shoot at would be a priority, but, nope. Similarly, the resource gathering is the same on each planet, you'll find a different colored stone for metal, a different tree+bush for carbon, while every other element is sourced from identical plants which have somehow managed to colonize every planet in the galaxy.

Space once you reach it, exhibits the same lack of variety. Stations are universally featureless ball or block shapes, combat is stale and pointless. Planets have exterior appearances which don't match their surface (water from space on desert planets, etc). Fleets are bland and contain THE SAME 5 SHIPS IN DIFFERENT COLOR SCHEMES. Absolutely pathetic. Pilotable starships have about 20 base models with slight variations, but all fly/feel identical, the only difference being +/- 5 storage slots. Fleet battles show in the "is NMS now worth buying" vids are total BS, after 3 years they still don't exist, just minor fighter battles (>4 fighters at a time) with fleets shooting out canons in all directions for scenery, doing no damage.

Finally the grind is insane, and for no point. The story is a pathetic afterthought, and the lack of coming across more than 1 player means its not even worth it for swag/bragging rights. You're going to go through MMO tier levels of grind, with no story or social recognition payoff. If running around pointing your impotent little multi-tool at different colored version of the same tree/rock for hundreds of hours to build up a base maybe 5 people will ever see, more power to you and your autism, but its not my or any normal persons idea of fun.

Overall this game still holds the title of being the most colossal gaming failure of the 2010s. Edgy contrarians and paid youtube shills will have you believe otherwise, but the game is a lifeless, empty, buggy mess, devoid of meaning or fun. Still selling for 60$ is perhaps the biggest joke of all. If you gave this out for free, maybe 1/100 people would come even half way close to finishing it or giving it more than a few hours before downloading.

It was definitely hyped to the highest degree but If you watched closely and looked at all the content what was released was close to what I expected. Since release Hello Games have been constantly updating and working hard polishing, refining and improving No Mans Sky. There is so much content there that it really does keep giving.

If you want to explore the stars and see what is out there you may like me find this game enchanting. Initially there are some challenges, surviving on early harsh planets, constantly finding required materials but as you develop your suit, your ship and your understanding you will reap the benefit of not feeling desperately tied to a grind and can really enjoy seeing what you find. Setting yourself goals of making money, improving your suit, upgrading or replacing your ship, getting your own freighter, building your own fleet, finding weird and wonderful planets or systems then sertling within one on your own base either alone or with friends. There is a lot to do and enjoy here. If you are a player that needs a clean narrative to follow there are story missions to follow but these are quite light and not enough for me to recommend this game to you. If everything I have mentioned appeals to you, you like me may really enjoy this game. I’ve played around 170 hours across 2 saves ( one solo and one multiplayer so I wasn’t too far ahead of a new joining friend when multiplayer was released)

The biggest thing for me, causing me to rate this an 8 is that it is a truly unique game, unlike anything else I’ve played. And that for me is deserving of recognition.

The hype surrounding this game was it's downfall. Many items/features/options that were shown and stated did not appear in the final release of the game. I hope they are coming (and for free, good to deliver on what you promise). I plan to hold on for a little to see where this takes me.

So far, it's a game I play when I am tired of the violence of the other games I play. Something to chill with in the evening, keeping me busy exploring the systems I have already discovered. Not something you can play for hours and hours on end like most other games.

The foundation for an amazing game is laid, let's see if Hello Games decides to build on it, or leave it flat.

My original review is 2 years old and based off the disastrous release this game had. The lesson to be learned here is do not boast about a technology before realizing it's pitfalls. Procedural generation is not an engine for creativity.

Exploration is great and all but what are you supposed to do for the rest of the end game explore the same planets over and over again? I've grown quite bored of trying to farm unique ships and use them for hardly anything. I feel like this game could've been so so so much more. However, I do like the effort given in the NEXT update.

From the malfunctioning scanner to broken portals (the central focus of its ARG) and hydroponic trays, Atlas Rises (v1.3) was a colossal cock-up that ended with HG walking away from it leaving game-breaking bugs in their wake (crafting the highest value items without the ability to harvest gases because the atmosphere harvesters are broken results in the game working definitely not as intended).

Technical abilities and arsedness aside, the game is basically a deception. Claiming 18 quintillion 'unique' procedurally-generated planets is dishonest when the planets are all basically the same: avoid exposure to local environmental hazard by hiding in caves or sparse buildings (civilisations with no cities?), or activating exosuit upgrades. The environmental hazards all have exactly the same effect so the game's insistence on hot/cold/toxic/radioactive is quite insulting. The individual planets even have the exact same biome stretching from north pole, through equator to south pole.

In terms of player activities, the game's puzzles are frankly laughable and, between them and the extremely limited dialogue in the 'conversations' with aliens, it becomes stale and repetitive when played for any significant length of time. The added 'quest' in the Atlas Rises update is very short, simplistic and ultimately pointless. Most bizarrely, Hello Games have never addressed the problem of randomly falling through the floor (whether drawn or not) into a subterranean sea that is almost impossible to escape from, a bug that, from what I can gather, has been there since launch. Pretty pitiful.

    Pros: It looks pretty.
    Cons: It basically is one.

    UPDATE

Oh dear. I just spent a couple of hours on the new 'Next' update that they've had a full year to try to get right and it's appalling. Frame rate issues when the frame rate is locked, sky and water effects that look like it's 1999 again, game crashes, petty gameplay decisions that increase the complexity of the most basic tasks tenfold, brazenly designed to keep you stuck in preliminary gameplay because they still haven't worked out how to make an actual game out of it... this is all on a PS4 Pro, btw. Lots of games use procedural generation. You have to do more than that to make a game of it. Your procedural generation should also work, fyi.

    Score reduced to 2.

    And...

It's really bad. After 1.57 – seven patches into trying to make a buggy broken mess playable – it's still a buggy broken mess. Missions are broken so they're a waste of time. Base-building is garbage so that's a waste of time. Animals disappear into nothingness when you're trying to scan them so exploring and uploading is a waste of time. Atmosphere harvesters are proper broken so high-end crafting is a waste of time. All of these issues have reported via HG's Zendesk bug-reporting system and, obviously, ignored. Trying to work your way through all the broken and boring to the galaxy centre must be soul-destroying. Hello Games are truly the most incompetent, deceitful and lazy game developers operating at the moment and they bring shame to the British gaming industry. They're good at talking about video games, just not much good at making them.

    Now the abuse is warranted.

EA and Activision would've abandoned this game right from the outset after failing so hard, but Hello Games stuck with it and with the NEXT update, it's finally looking like the game that everyone was clamoring for. Aside from about 20 trucks worth of bugs and crashes that the developers are thankfully releasing patch after patch for constantly, the game is a good bit of fun with lots of stuff to do and explore, even if the planets and gameplay can get repetitive.

If you were waiting for No Man's Sky to get good to finally get it, now's the time to do it. It's only going to keep getting better as the bugs are worked out and the system becomes more streamlined, and Hello Games continues to keep adding more content completely free over the course of only weeks. If you already were burned, however, I can't really convince you to come back if you don't want to. I didn't buy into the hype to begin with because I'm one of about three people on the planet who has long-term memory and pattern recognition, so I knew from the announcement that the game was going to crash and burn just like 99% of the others do.

tl;dr, if you were waiting, get it now, but only when it's on sale, and if you were already burned, feel free to never touch it ever again unless you're generous and feel like giving them a second chance, because to their credit, they HAVE worked their asses off for the last two years to try to make up for Sean Murray's blatant lies.

I spent ages trying to discover every plant and animal on my planet, and was excited to finally leave in search of exciting planets. However, that feeling of excitement quickly wore off for me. After a while you realise the games limitations in what is supposed to be an infinite universe. Planets would start to look the same, space stations lacked any variety, and interaction with npc's became very limited. On a side note, how am I the first person to discover a planet if there are already alien life forms scattered around said planet? Putting aside the lack of gameplay features that people were told would be in the game, No Man's Sky feels extremely bare bones. What is the point of having 18 quintillion planets in a game? Why create a game where 99% of it will never be discovered? The only reason I carried on playing this game was the hope of finding something new an exciting in the universe. Needless to say, I didn't. Maybe this game will improve with regular updates and added gameplay features. But considering how quiet Hello Games and Sean Murray have been since launch, I wouldn't be surprised if this game remains the way it is. Obviously, I don't want that to happen because this game had so much potential, if just failed to deliver and turned into a rather dull experience. Expand

Now with the NEXT update it has, and the game is incredible, it took me entirely by surprise. If you still don't like it, it was never meant for you to begin with. It has an extremely large scope and a lot of variety. Every space game component you can think of is there and then some, trading, combat, farming, base building, fleet management, multiship freighters, customization, missions, alien diplomacy, endless worlds. Even a decent story. Just keep in mind that as a whole, the game is astonishing but it doesn't delve deeply in all of it's individual components, so don't buy it if say, only the combat is what interests you.

I'm addicted and just scratching the surface. I couldn't in good conscience have asked for more. It's not for everybody, but if you do love this kind of game, it might be the one you've always waited for.

It's not like Destiny where each planet has maybe 1 square mile of playable space. The planets are massive, filled with creatures, and full of wonder. I hope Hello Games can sell millions more copies to fund more development.

Update 2: It's been a little over two weeks since release and I'm an incredible 80 hours into No Man's Sky. I just can't stop. The NEXT version of NMS is pretty amazing for someone who has never played it before! The look of the game, the retro 1950's inspired art work, the sound, and the sheer scale make this a special experience. I am a casual gamer, not being interested in the deeper aspects of mining and gathering essential items, but I can see that here there is a lot to do here... If your'e like me go for the creative mode, which is a god mode allowing you to explore freely with no need to harvest raw materials etc.

Why 8? It is confusing at times, being unclear what your actual objectives are, and secondly the frame-rate at certain points drops so low that is for a few moments unplayable...

Definitely worth a shot if on discount.

The tutorial is completely reworked and it introduces core mechanics earlier, like bases and freighters (I hear you get your first freighter free of charge, so that's neat).

They also reworked the enhancement systems for weapons and ship upgrades. It makes more sense now, at least for me.

Textures and procedural generation have been improved, along with new animations and a character model with full customization. You can play with other races, too!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. No Man's Sky has very much redeemed it's self. with the beta tests of the update NEXT having amazing reviews and critics calling it the spiritual awakening or the Galactic Sized Come Back, the game is here to stay, gone with the bugs and here with the revolution of gaming.

The first update titled "The Foundation Update" brought a new game mode, base-building, the ability to grow plants and products, automation, etc

The second update called, "The Pathfinder update" gave us 4k graphics, 3 new land vehicles, an ARG, increased base building mechanics, more game modes and updated procedural software.

The third update was the 1st reviver getting people to come back, this was "Atlas Rises". With 30 hrs of great story, more procedural software updates, graphical updates, another game mode, (a somewhat bare bones) Multiplayer, more base building mechanics, ability to buy freighters and big ships, the ability to own 6 smaller ships at a time in your freighter, ship combat, and also flight combat and landing controls were also updated.

And finally the Big Daddy of all the updates and game saver of the century, "NEXT", while inconclusive and only going off well-known, hardcore, critic and beta tester accounts, the game seems to be saved completely from the trash can. Next has been confirmed to have, Ringed planets, more story, third-person view, multiplayer models, buy-able corvettes and frigates, COMPLETELY amazing and OVERHAULED graphics, factions, PVP, Playable races, amazing add-ons to base-building, gravitational physics, Overhauled procedural codes, Racetrack building and the ability to share them, updated resources, ability to command a fleet of ships and a restraint on universal currency so it doesn't become inflatable as easily. And i haven't even got into the stuff speculated by the new trailer.

This game is here to stay. Sean Murray never gave us promises and we struggle to grasp that. i myself gave a review of 4 before, ripping the game apart, but now the game we WANTED(and not promised) is finally here. we should all be happy it is and hope for it's continued progress to be as successful as the past updates.

Final Comparison: EVE/Elite Dangerous/Minecraft, i struggled to compare this game to anything but EVE and Elite Dangerous with more exploration and the infinite possibilities of Minecraft.

You have to be realistic.

Having said all that, the game does suffer with an inability to drive the player, to explore. This is because the bulk of the game revolves around collecting resources to explore to collect resources. NMS is a fantastic exploration game and for many, demonstrates what is might be like to live a life in the stars. My problems with this game are that once you have a base set up, what is there to do? There seems like so much could still be added and improved upon, for example you cannot roleplay as a pirate (which are in the game as they can attack you) and you cannot hate one of the factions as it isn't an option.

No Man's sky is a fantastic simulation of galactic exploration, there is no denying that, but I don't think it is a hugely successful game.

The game has half baked shooting mechanics and the planets are not too different from each other. One planet has blue grass with red dinosaurs and the other planet has red grass with blue dinosaurs its just a different colour palette for each planet. This game is too ambitious for its own good and it shows, it has a lot of things to show only to be implemented in a very shabby way (shooting mechanics, flight "simulation", survival). It's pretty obvious that this game has an identity crisis, so much to the point that it has no goal (or rather a badly explained goal), giving us no incentive to play it. The centre of the galaxy was shabbily done and was a colossal disappointment. You can't sympathise with indie developers just because they are "indie", you need quality and for 60 euros it's not even close. The game is terribly repetitive and not in the good way. Procedural generation is a risk because it gives the game no personality, there is nothing really interesting in the game, no variables (deserted planets, civilization, wars). The only good part of this game is the soundtrack. Expand

But amazingly, within two years of its initial release No Man's Sky has been vastly improved in every single way. With stronger graphics, dozens upon dozens of bug fixes and tweaks, more activities to complete, a greater sense of adventure, a far deeper narrative, and oodles more secrets to discover, No Man's Sky is no longer that buggy, empty, pointless trek to nowhere that it used to be. The game oozes personality now, and everything you do - whether it's building a base, crossing water on the exocraft hover car, completing missions for factions, searching crashed freighters for goods, etc. there's rarely a sense of boredom. The planets used to be ugly multicoloured mudballs but are now captivating and feel so much bigger and more exciting, and so does the galaxy, which feels ten times as enormous as it used to feel. No Man's Sky has a very bright future ahead and I honestly thank Hello Games for not giving up on it and over time giving players what they originally paid for and much, much more. Expand

Aside from the bugs and crashes, the only thing you do in this game is fly to a planet, break some things, smell some flowers, and then leave. There is no story, there is no dialogue, there is nothing. It is amazing how empty and unpolished this game is.

I do feel like I spend more time in these menus then exploring the planets I visited. For anyone who is looking for realistic, sharp graphics No Man Sky does not have them. However, the art style they use in the game makes it forgiving. I have put in over 15 hours into this game and I already found it becoming very repetitive within the first 3-6 hours. The things the I think it does well is the feeling of discovering something that may not be discovered by other players will keep on pulling you back. As well a plant life and animals that you find along your way. The first few hours are very slow, but it's worth it because all the small little items you find will help you build better parts for your ship. Most of the planets I landed on have been very dry and bleak, but the audio and the sense of discovery help build an atmosphere making worth your while to check the planets. Is this worth your time? If you want a hybrid of Destiny and Minecraft and 18 quintillion planets to explore I would recommend this game to you. Keep in mind that you have slightly awkward controls, a very slow start, up to 4 or 5 hours, and a clunky and slow UI. Overall I would give this a 7.9/10. Expand

When the game was originally released last year, it felt unfinished, empty and pointless (especially when it came to the lack of a real story/narrative). Whilst a number of minor problems have been fixed in the latest patch/update, we are still missing any sense of purpose. This might be acceptable for some, but in reality it's just an intergalactic version of Minecraft. Expand

The soundtrack is great, it does a great job of setting the tone and atmosphere of this experience. The art style is very good, too. Very nice visuals. And the sense of scale is great too. The planets are massive, the landscapes are very sweeping and lengthy. But this game does a lot more things wrong. The planets all look exactly the same, you do exactly the same things on every damn planet, and last but not least, the 'center of the universe' is very poorly executed. When you tap the button to go there, the center just teleports even further away. And if you follow it, the center just constantly escapes your grasp every damn time. This stuff is completely stupid and illogical. With multiple delays, huge anticipation, and a full 60$ price at launch, No Man's Sky feels like an unfinished, poorly built tech demo. This game would be a 5 but the developers have added some helpful updates, the music is great, the art style is awesome, and the sense of scale is perfectly executed. I say this a lot lately, but don't get this game for above 15$. Expand

Exploration, discovery, adventure, and variation have always been the four aspects I deemed essential to an open-world experience, so while looking at No Man's Sky, a game which technically tries to deliver on all four of these aspects, I want to determine what differentiates this game from something like Breath of the Wild or Red Dead Redemption. Both of which I believe are the best of the best in all four of these areas. In terms of variety, I think where No Man's Sky fails is how it executes its variation with gameplay. The fact that it is procedurally generated means that this game will undeniably have easily distinguishable wildlife and environments, so in this area above all others, I thought the game would be able to execute it correctly. However all the variation is completely surface level. None of it changes the way you approach the game or traverse an area, and all it does is make some areas cumbersome to navigate. Now look at Breath of the Wild, the complete opposite of No Man's Sky in this perspective. Most of these shrines may look the same, but the variety in the micro-challenges and small puzzles they present you with work wonders to make them fresh and constantly surprising. The environments aren't just designed that way because that looks the best, their variation forces the player to make different preparations or use different gear and weapons depending on which they plan on venturing into. Traversing mountainous areas is completely different from traversing Hyrule Field because they're both laid out completely differently and require different techniques to move through them. This helped by the large selection of rewards one can hope to find. This directly ties to No Man's Sky's hours upon hours of exploration. Exploring is the very purpose of No Man's Sky, and is the core gameplay from which everything else stems. In this, No Man's Sky fails because, the only goal in the game is to mine for materials. Occasionally there will be a new creature or environment that may be visually interesting, however they all act essentially identically to every other creature and environment in the game. There is no purpose to simply exploring and looking for things of interest in No Man's Sky, because there will never be anything out of the ordinary to find. Nothing that offers anything more than a new sky-box to mine things in. Nothing ever feels new or surprising, so the discovery aspect completely fails as well. Red Dead Redemption, by contrast, differentiates every town and landmark due to the activities one is able to do there. No Man's Sky, however briefly, does understand this. The first hour of this game easily delivers one of the strongest feelings of exploration in any game as the player is able to go wherever they wish and do whatever they wish, until they realize that wherever they go, everything they do is a carbon copy of whatever it was they were doing before. The sheer fact that mining is the core gameplay mechanic in No Man's Sky simultaneously hinders the game's feeling of adventure, which requires a feeling of progression and journey. The easiest way for a game hoping to achieve this feeling is to demonstrate that the player is strong enough to take down foes that were deadly at the beginning of the game. With a goal in mind, a player can feel a sense of adventure by taking their own steps to accomplish that goal. The very purpose of Breath of the Wild is to deliver an adventure. The player can nearly constantly see Hyrule Castle, and thus are always reminded of their goal as they go about preparing for it in whatever way they deem necessary. In terms of what I value in an open-world game, No Man's Sky is an abject failure, and despite how amazing the initial half-an-hour to an hour was, I still cannot justify giving No Man's Sky any score higher than a 2 out of 10. While I’m sure developer Hello Games is still tweaking things and perhaps even creating more content for No Man’s Sky, the current state of affairs is a strong one. This galactic opus still offers an infinite amount of content for those who want to lose themselves among the stars, but now also contains a concrete throughline that will satisfy a wider array of players. It can be irritating at times, but it’s also full of stunning moments and the satisfaction of building a virtual life among the stars. Four years after launch, it’s finally a journey worth taking.

While No Man's Sky is engrossing for the first few hours, repetition starts to set in and the proceedings grow dull. The developers stated that they plan to add significant features such as base building which could dramatically change the game for the better. There's a promising foundation present, so it's possible to envision a more substantial game down the line. As it currently stands, though, our excitement to cross the universe faded sooner than we expected.
