seriously if you think cod 4 is a good game and you think mw3 is to much like it, why are you upset?? i dont think this is too much like mw2 or cod4. im having a really good time on multiplayer because it keeps you playing unlike Black ops. mw3 uses challanges instead of cod points so if you bye "red dot sight" on Black ops you wont feel the same you will if you earned it in mw3. there forseriously if you think cod 4 is a good game and you think mw3 is to much like it, why are you upset?? i dont think this is too much like mw2 or cod4. im having a really good time on multiplayer because it keeps you playing unlike Black ops. mw3 uses challanges instead of cod points so if you bye "red dot sight" on Black ops you wont feel the same you will if you earned it in mw3. there for no sense of achievement. i think it feels great when you unlock a new camo of attachment. a lot better than buying it. an addictive, thrilling and action packed game Expand

It seems silly to me that people would bash this game based solely on its similarity to its predecessors. The reason you were so excited for this game was the fact that the previous iterations were so good! The creators have found a recipe that works, and rather than tearing it down or making large adjustments, they have added to its successful already model. It is similar to the first two titles because they would be foolish to ruin a good thing by trying to reinvent the wheel (see: Madden).

The natural instinct is to compare this game to Battlefield 3 (due to similarity in game and release time) and I will be one to do so positively. My roommate plays Bf3 on the PC, and, it's true, it is an incredibly polished gem. On the PS3, though, it is slow (30fps), occasionally grainy, and the Frostbite 2 does not seem nearly as smart. MW3, on the other hand, is in its wheelhouse on PS3 with quick refresh, better blended high and lowlights, and better perspective in terms of scope. I own both and will play both, but MW3 will get the nod from me.

I'm reading a lot of reviews that fall prey to failed expectations, not failure to deliver a great game. Rather than whining about it, stop back over by your local GameStop and trade it in for Heavy Rain or Arkham City. You'll end up happier and I won't have to listen to your ill-conceived disappointment on PSN.

The problem is not with the success of the game mechanics. Most users feel ripped off to pay for a game with recycled artwork, dated graphics, and minor tweaks to a game they just bought a year ago for the same price. The Call of Duty series has turned into the Nickelback of the gaming world. Mass producing the same thing over and over again just to fill the shelves with games that pander to the masses. But, we often forget, the masses need some games too, and those people are enjoying this game and the experience that comes with it, and that is what they are paying for. Not for a new game, but for a very similar game with a fresh start for everyone and some new features. All in all, this game goes against artistic integrity and what it means to be creative, but maybe we shall refer to call of duty as a commercial art, just as other games could be considered more of a fine art. The game does not deserve a score of less than 5 at all, but if the scale was based on ONLY other CoD games, then it should score a 2.2. Thank you. Expand

Most insane trolling ever! Wow! This is interesting to behold. All these people who bought the game on day one and obviously enjoy the COD formula are stupid enough in their anonymity to give the game a 0... which is a score you'd give a game you have zero desire to ever play again. Funny! You guys are losers ;)

The graphics are the same as MW2 but the game still looks solid and it runs very smoothly with no technical problems. Although this game is an overall better package than Battlefield 3 because all aspects of the game ,apart from the graphics, are great; there is no area of it which is amazing. Battlefield 3 has amazing graphics, sound and multiplayer and although it has a poor singleplayer it gets the higher score from me. But MW3 is a great game, no doubt about that, any fan of this series will be happy with this game and should buy it. It's just that there is nothing amazing about it which is why it gets an 8/10. Completely overhated. Yes it's more of the same but that goes for most sequels in every franchise. Slight innovations and tweaks keep the multiplayer fresh for a while and the campaign is awesome as per usual in the Modern Warfare Franchise.

I would actually score it a point lower than BF3 just because in the couple of hours I've been online and the modes immediately available to me I've only experienced fast & furious gun & run play. I've never played Battlefield 3 or MW2 so I can only compare it to Black Ops. My review pertains only to the multiplayer game:

Pros: 1) better graphics and audio than Black Ops (e.g. environment has more detail and guns don't sound like toys). 2) Killstreaks have more options and are customizable by class. 3) Kill Confirmed is a fun tweak on Team Deathmatch. As for pros, that's about it,

As for pros, that's about it, in my opinion. Cons: 1) equipment and gun attachments/perks must level up (as opposed to purchasing with CoD points), so if you prefer a motion sensor--sorry, no way you're getting it until right before you prestige. 2) Sound quality of players' mics is poor. 3) Server disconnects/times out way more often than Black Ops. 4) I'm signed up for CoD Elite, but have yet actually see what it does because whenever log in, it kicks me out again. 5) Theater mode sucks: there's no first-person view for other players, and as far as I can tell, you can only watch your own games. If you want to watch other good players' games to get tips, you're out of luck.
    6) Many of the maps seem to be thrown together haphazardly and are not interesting.

The gun/equipment leveling up, server problems, and theater mode are the biggest flaws in my opinion. Overall, I'm sure it'll provide plenty of entertainment, but the shortcomings of the multiplayer experience are heavily outweighed by the improvements.

I'm really quite surprised that they got away with giving this a $60 price tag. What is advertised as an innovative "shooter to end all shooters" is actually what seems like a simple copy/paste of it's predecessor. I'll admit Black Ops was fairly similar to Modern Warfare 2, but at least it was DIFFERENT. Modern Warfare 3 is a shameless re-usage of the same engine, even going as far as to use models from Call of Duty 4 in the campaign. While we're on the subject, how about that campaign. It's frustratingly short, and on top of that, the "profound, impacting" moments which laced the experience we're hardly just that at all. They came off as forced and almost bland. The only redeeming (using the term lightly) thing about Modern Warfare 3 is it's multiplayer. Keep in mind that I say loosely, as it's basically a slightly tighter and more varied Modern Warfare 2. That's it. That is literally all it is. Lets wrap it up, this isnt worth my time. What had potential to be something great ended up falling flat on it's face. Modern Warfare 3, or should I say Modern Warfare 2.5, throws up a big sign that says Activision needs to hang up its Call of Duty hat unless it can bring something new to the table. A score of three may be a little harsh, but it really is almost exactly the same as Modern Warfare 2. Hate to be tough, but I also hate paying $60 for the same thing I played two years ago. Expand

I am in no doubt that this practise is illegal, and something needs to be done to rectify the situation, I don't even care about the game anymore, it could be the best game ever (its not, its mediocre at best), and none of it would matter, due to the fraudulent activities concerning Elite, by allowing minors to pay for the service without informing them that they are not able to access it. First things first, I do not find this to be a copy and paste of Modern Warfare 2! I find it hypocritical of anyone to say so, Gears of War 3, Battlefield 3, all contain same weaponry and similar game play. I personally think MW3 has been given a hard time due to hard feelings on the fact it was clearly going to sell so well.

    Now:
Spec Ops, is probably the most disappointing aspect in my eyes. I found it lacked the same addictive style of It's dead counterpart 'Zombies' and also didn't promote the same kind of camaraderie between friends, featuring only 2 players. I found the decision to make one players death end the game add a bit too much stress to those who like to play as a lone wolf within a group so to speak, and after the first 15 rounds began to become a bit repetitive. I praise the new leveling system however, it adds longevity to Spec Ops, however I don't feel the content is strong enough to hold the leveling system.
The campaign is not too shabby, the story line is not great but anyone who played 15 seconds of any Modern Warfare game knows Infinity Ward never intended it to be an emotional ride with depth and psychology. The levels are larger, not repetitive, and the action sequence are explosive as ever. Nothing incredibly knew here but we all get the feeling the campaign is merely a distraction to the beast that is CoD: Multiplayer. The campaign takes only a few hours, and whilst I wouldn't by the game solely for it, I find it to be a decent time waster and quite the thrill ride. The graphics DO look marginally better, explosions and gunfire audio have also been improved. In campaign and multiplayer, despite the hilarity of it all, you do feel like you are in a battlefield.
Most importantly, the Multiplayer aspect. The Multiplayer is excellent and a massive improvement on any other CoD so far. The maps are particularly good, despite the somewhat dull names. If you want to snipe, windows are littered over every map. Want to rush? Multiple flanking routes tube through each map. Want to camp? There are plenty of places to take cover. Want to get a multi-kill explosion? Each map is bursting with cars and flammable barrels.
The weaponry is also much better than expected, plenty of new things added here, and improvements made upon the older ones. No gun feels weak, in fact all are insatiably powerful, and the upgrade system is excellent. In the other CoD's, I'd find myself bumping up my killstreaks, earning points/ XP and just buying what I wanted at the right level. In MW3 if you want rapid fire, then you better buckle down and earn it by getting a fair few kills with that gun. It really gives the player incentive to try every single gun and Fleshes out the use you can get from them. The recoil and bullet impacts add a flash a realism to CoD, which is something most players aren't used to. If someone shoots you, you will immediately die. If you try and pop someones head from the other side of the map with the assualt rife, you will have a hard time due to the harsh recoil. Want to solve it? Get good with the gun and unlock the 'Kick' proficiency to reduce recoil. Raising the level cap was a better idea, with the prestige icons not looking too inspiring however this is outdone by the new prestige shop, in which you can spend one token each prestige, to purchase something extremely useful. Such as carrying a weapon over into your next prestige, to prevent working for it again, and even giving yourself 2 hours double XP to help you rush through those prestige's to get to the top even quicker!
Two new game modes have been added, Team Defender and Kill confirmed. Kill Confirmed being the game where you must collect Dog Tags from fallen enemies in order to register the score, or collect Dog Tags from dead team mates to deny your enemies the kill!.. All in all I was not majorly impressed but I found it to be a fresh addition Team Defender, however, is quite brilliant and hectic. It's a normal TDM however, a neutral flag appears on the map after the first kill, and players must rush to hold it for there team to get double points. The enemy will be shown on the map whilst they are holding the flag, meaning when you have it, you're going to have 6 people in your ass. All people in the game spawn near the flag after dying, meaning the battle is constant, and crazy and is always moving around the map.
So, with the weak Spec Ops mode, a decent campaign but a perfect Multiplayer earn this game an 8 in my eyes. If more effort was put into Spec Ops, I'd edge towards a 9 or ten but in my eyes it brought it down a point or two.
Thank you for your time, if you want a good FPS multiplayer experience, head to your shop and buy CoD!

I grew to hate MW2 for reasons like guns overpowered, camping, too many snipers, campaign too easy on veteran and poor maps encouraging camping. I have grown to love the new game as it fixes all of these. The single player is a blast with the fights in England, USA and Germany looking awesome; if it took you just 3 hours to complete you should have upped the difficulty as I have clocked 9 hours on veteran and have two levels to do. Multiplayer maps look great in Paris, London to name a few and with the new map layout the camping and sniping is no more. Personally people that played in that way made me hate the game so if that was ur previous style u may have to change ur style to a more mobile run and gun approach which I love. New mode Kill Confirmed is my favourite gametype rewarding gung ho attitude and stopping the needless camping everywhere. Guns and Killstreaks are more balanced and new create a class is refined with rewards for newer players. Guns now level up and it doesn't take long to get the new attachmant you've been waiting for. You now get rewarded even if you die lots and new Support killstreaks help newer players get their rewards making it less daunting to the noob. Lag doesn't seem as apparent as the last game but this is dependent on ur connection. I think this game has been sabotaged by haters who haven't even played the game, BAttlefield fanboys or infinity ward fanboys. At first it felt like MW2 mk2 but after a few hours it really comes into its own. Infinity ward made an appalling MW2 and black ops was good but got boring really quickly and made me question whether COD is getting a bit stale. I am not a fanboy as I hated MW2 and got bored of Black ops. I love MW3 and it has given me the same feeling I got when first playing COD4. My faith in the franchise is back and i look forward to the new monthly dlc. Is it better than Battlefield 3? If you like Battlefield you should get Battlefield, if you like cod before u shold get mw3. But if you haven't played battlefield i think it is too hard for the noob and mw3 will help u get better at the game. Please be honest when reviewing this game and give it a chance. Expand

It's worth noting that this game has a single-player campaign, which many of the reviews bombing it don't seem to take into consideration. If you're interested in only the multi-player modes, then yeah, you'll probably be a bit disappointed. Still, MW3 may not reinvent the wheel, but it's far from a bad game.

I hadn't played COD since MW2. The campaign was unbearably short and left me dissapointed as I wasn't a regular multiplayer gamer. MW3's story features captivating scenes and is a blast to play, the spec ops will keep the offline re-playability goign for some time.

I wasn't expecting anything amazing for this game. Modern Warfare 2 had already shown that Infinity Ward did not give a crap about listening to the community. However, they never cease to amaze me with how bad this game was. The multiplayer isn't as broken as MW2, but that's like saying I'm not as bad as Osama Bin Laden. The campaign's story was horrible and was worse than MW2 (to be fair,I wasn't expecting anything amazing for this game. The multiplayer isn't as broken as MW2, but that's like saying I'm not as bad as Osama Bin Laden. The campaign's story was horrible and was worse than MW2 (to be fair, I actually liked MW2's story). Survival mode was a terrible attempt at getting IW its own "Zombies." The spec ops missions were OK but not as spectacular as MW2. Anyway, with the less significant parts of the game taken care of, let's move on to the biggest and worst part of it: the multiplayer.

The "core" fanbase of the COD series was begging and begging for Infinity Ward to change the multiplayer system and actually innovate like Treyarch did with Black Ops. Deep down, most of them new that they probably wouldn't listen and just make COD's multiplayer a very expensive map pack with a marginally different interface. However, what very few of them were expecting was for Infinity Ward to actually be backwards and get rid of the many features that Treyarch put in Black Ops. For those of you who don't know Black Ops actually changed the level up system and you could get most of the equipment and base perks in the game if you just get enough "COD Points" which was essentially just virtual money. This made it possible for people who were new to the game to not be lagging behind everyone in a terrible way without having to put more experienced players at a disadvantage (in mw2 there were death streaks). What was Infinity Ward's response? Did they improve the system? Nope! They just threw the entire system out and went back to the old system of having to clock in countless hours to get that one class loadout you want to play with. On a more specific note, the improved scoreboard system that Black Ops had (which showed how many objectives players did) was thrown out in favor of MW2's scoreboard system, presumably because they don't like people who want to win instead of just kill people. The only positive thing MW3's multiplayer had in comparison to Black Ops was that you didn't get disconnected as often and the kill streak system has been improved.

Conclusion: Do not buy this game at full price. If you can borrow the game (from a friend or something) or rent it or buy it used, then you might be able to have a few hours of fun with the campaign and spec-ops.

Why are we even playing new games. Let's pay a monthly fee like in WoW and receive regular updates for next 10 years, ocasionally paying full price for big updates. That would at least not pretend to be a new game every time and suck as much money and even more time out of gamers. That is how we like our shooters, right? DO NOT BELIEVE THIS GAME'S LOW USER SCORE. IT IS A COORDINATED CAMPAIGN BY BF3 FANBOYS TO DEGRADE MW3 IN ANY POSSIBLE WAY.

    Now, to my review:
This game is a significant improvement on the previous two, with the story of Soap, Price and the others wrapped up in a way that left me feeling hollow and sad in the way the characters had ended up. With most of the characters we love from previous games had died by now, a comment is made by IW on the cost of war. People who are nothing less than heroes have died tragic deaths. Amazing campaign in my view, delivering a true story in a way that only shooters in the CoD series have ever done.

Because this game will inevitably be compared to Battlefield 3, i have to say I was completely unimpressed by the beta and cancelled my preorder. By all accounts, the campaign is, typical of Battlefield games, a fallacy, and to me and many others this is completely unacceptable. A better campaign mode can be found on the iPhone in the form of cheap Call of Duty knock-off games (chief among which being the Modern Combat series). The multiplayer conflict between games is a personal choice in my opinion, with players more inclined to go for tense focused firefights at home in MW3, while those who like huge blown-out battles with 64 players much more likely to enjoy BF3. In my opinion DICE have not created as wholesome a product as Activision's handful of studios, with the multiplayer being the only redeemable facet of the game. Spec Ops makes a return in MW3, with 16 missions which are all challenging and fun. I personally hoped for a few more missions, but the new Survival gametype adding a new layer of challenge and fun to the game. With MW3, three fleshed out and polished modes are available to the user, with each living up to the hype of previous games.

While this game isn't quite a 10 in my view, I have rated it thus to counter the massive amounts of fanboys attacking the metacritic user score of this game. I am livid at the aggression of both EA and BF3 fans in attacking this game and using dirty tactics to try and deplete fans fof the CoD series. What shocks me most is the inability of these groups to be honourable about the whole thing and let the two games battle it out based on their quality alone. Activision has kept quiet about the whole thing and put a great investment into their game, whereas EA has used tactics bordering on corporate espionage to dishonestly degrade their competition. Thankfully, they have failed.
For the above reasons, I rate this game 10/10

Yes, it is similar to MW. Yes, a lot of the sounds are the same. Yes the game engine is the same. Forgive me, but why is this a bad thing??? The best quote i've found to describe this so far is as follows 'MW3 is evolution, not revolution.' They've taken a phenomenally popular/successful product and added more of the same. MORE. They didn't take this game and make it worse than MW2 so why give it such low review marks? Simple fact is if you enjoy MW or any fast paced online action agmes you're pick this up and love it. The game engine runs at a solid 60fps and looks incredibly smooth. Granted, in comparison to the graphics of Crysis2 or BF3 it's not up there. It looks better than MW2 (albeit marginally) and runs much faster than BF3, particularly on multiplayer (no screen tearing or other glitches that I've seen so far). The maps seem tighter encouraging more close quarters combat and it seems a little more frenetic; you dare not stay still in case someone blasts you from any and all angles. It's far superior to Black Ops which had a terrible multiplayer in my opinion. Then of course there's spec ops which, either on split screen or online, is fantastically fun to play. It's short, sharp with massive amounts of replayability and some great missions (MileHigh Jack in particular is a blast!) And then there's suvival mode. I read somewhere that this was an 'imitation of the Zombie's mode that falls flat'. I can't disagree more. I loved it, either in co-op or in single player. It's a new dimension to MW and is a welcome addition. There's a lot of replaybility as you level up and acquire different weapons, armour, air support, etc. MW3 is big, it's loud and it's all about the action. The entire package is huge; a 4 - 6 hour campaign with a massive online multiplayer plus 16 spec ops missions and a huge survival mode. I'm struggling to understand the 270 negative comments (at time of writing). For me, it's an essential purchase which represents excellent value and is THE multiplayer experience on console. SCORE: 9/10 - was going to give it 8 because the graphics aren't up there with the competitors but the size of the package puts this back up to the 9's for me. Expand

The one's giving this game a zero are the true bandwagon jumpers, not the ones who are rating this oblectively. Of course this game is same-y, and I would give it an easy 10 if it was not. But it is still an (obviously) awesome game. Do all fighting game sequels, ALL sports games, side-scoller sequels, and basically all sequels deserve a zero because there overly similiar to the previous game?

Game had such high expectations. I atleast expected to enjoy it. Campaign is fun but forgettable. spec ops is fun but cheap. the Multiplayer is FAIL. **** maps. **** gameplay. gfx fail. sound design fail. just its a solid piece of **** well back to BF3 even though that game had a flakey campaign atleast the multiplayer of that one rocks.

The way that it upgrades each individual weapon so you're forced to use it to upgrade it rather than saving money and buying what you want. It forces you to branch out of your comfort zone, even if for a while. The maps are pretty good, the different types of guns and kill streaks are entertaining and the overall experience is unmatched.

Maps overall maybe a little bigger for some of them (some of them are actually pretty good) .. I traded in my worthless Black Ops, so I only paid about $45 for the game. So not out that much overall. Are there things I would like to see in the game? Sure. Part of the issue was obviously Sledgehammer not being used to the IW Engine 4.0 enough to upgrade it to a true 5.0 iteration. So it's basically IW 4.4 Engine (some of the stuff from MW2 is actually directly copied over in the multiplayer campaign which WAS somewhat lazy on their part)

If you like campaigns, it's not bad. Short, but almost all of the shooters are. It felt somewhat less "roller coaster" over Black Ops, but it is still a linear story (obviously)

There are many things I haven't even really used yet, like changing up killstreaks. There are some different ones.

The game is worth playing, but I wouldn't suggest getting CoD Elite, and if you can find it used (which I'm sure after all of the raging there will be used copies popping up) I would go for it. It's definitely not as bad as Black Ops, but it's not as revolutionary as it could be either.

Let me start by saying this game is Infinity Wards Masterpiece Mw2 turned into an overused piece of dog poop. Maps are confined to such a space that the Developer decided that by making the player run slower they would feel the map is bigger. NO! It does not. The simple fact of seeing my character flapping his arm in a jogging motion as if running away from Godzilla, but only to find himself moving as though he had 100lbs weights straped to his leg is unreasonable, unlogical, and unnecessary. Why would you think that by trying to put a lot of buildings and corner on a small map would make it seem bigger? Your answer? NO! It does not again. The lighting on about half the maps are terrible, some of the lighting is the same through out most of the area. Same consistency, same shading/tint. What is wrong with that? Will, hmm... Let me see.. clearly everything. The graphics is also and issue. Minor downgrades of meshes, the texture to me also seem a bit dumb downed compared to Mw2. Now about the guns, what happen quick scoping? I understand some people feel this is an issue but why would you degrade a sniper rifle to the point where its unbearable to even have. To the point where the gun is practically useless? During my time online(Both PS3 and 360) I literally shot a player in the torso about 10ft away with a M107c a.k.a. the .50 cal(Damage on the gun stat clearly stats max damage) and the player turned around and shot me? I assure you this happened multiple times(Full 4 green bar). Do not get me wrong, I love the CoD franchise. I just hate what it has become.

Also to you SledgeHammer, yes directly to you and I hope you read this. I do not know how hard or how little you worked on making this game you call Modern Warfare 3, or the sacrifices made or if any made at all, BUT was clearly too much to put effort on your behalf? The engine was already there for you! You didn't have to build an engine from the ground up. You clearly had a Year to draft artwork for the maps, design layouts, make a campaign storyline and retexture some guns. With as many well-educated people as you have it shouldn't be that hard. I also notice models of objects from Mw3 that are/is similar/from Mw2. Mainly was It to hard for you to try At ALL with passion for games to put in the slightest amount of sweat and blood into this game? I guess not eh? I don't blame you. You, just like Activision, just wants to make a quick buck with the smallest amount of energy spent by milking the CoD name and franchise. I bet if you sell milk with Call of Duty on it you would get 12yrs old fanboys flocking from all over wanting it. Good luck with CoD:Mw4 or CoD:Iron Wolf. Heard one of those is coming out again next year in 2012 by November again. No surprise. Same engine, new guns, new map right? Charge 60$ for what should be a 14.95$ map pack. "Can't fix what ain't broken" right? It ain't broken so no point in bothering with it, right? Nope. It's Call IMPROVEMENT,PROGRESSION. Too bad those words aren't in yours or Activision's Dictionary.
