I'm sorry to say I'm in the negative crowd here. I was soo looking forward to a great game. I'm a multiplayer PC gamer and MW3 is a big disappointment. For the first time they actually took an XBOX game and ported it to the PC instead of the other way around. The on-line play is a joke. They only support up to 16 players and still cant keep lag and connection problems down. After 5I'm sorry to say I'm in the negative crowd here. I was soo looking forward to a great game. They only support up to 16 players and still cant keep lag and connection problems down. After 5 hours of play I see constant Host migration pauses and occassional network lag. This is on an overclocked quad core machine with a gtx460 card and running on FIOS.
Battlefield on the other hand is the opposite. They actually took the suggestons of the COD community and implemented them. Full browsing with ranked dedicated servers and up to 64 players in a game. The max I've been in was a 32 player game and lag wasn't there and none of the Console game host migration BS.
The graphics are also a big disappointment. They are once again the quality of XBOX and nowhere near what they should be on a higher end machine. Even the sounds are scrrewy. The guns are muffled like some liberal teacher made them, not wanting to expose people to the correct sounds of war. All I can say is give BF3 a try. Besides the vehicles you'll think you're playing the game you thought MW3 would be.

Infinity ward just released another game widely known as Modern Warfare 3. It is the second sequel to widely popular "Call Of Duty:Modern Warfare. It tells the story after hours of killing General Shepherd, Captain John Price and Nikolai evacuate a dying John "Soap" MacTavish from Site Hotel Bravo, Afghanistan. They reach a safehouse run by Nikolaiâ

I don't know how "Activision" can launch this kind of games. Call of duty: MW3 is the same game that MW2; the same graphics, weapons and the same strategy.
MW3 is not a emulator of the real live but a simple arcade.
I put 1 because this game is really an actualization of mw2 and NOT A NEW GAME.

The campaign mode is top notch but the spec-ops/co-op mode is pretty so-so. Zombie mode is still COD's best co-op mode. The biggest issue I also had with the multiplayer online is that it seems that you die to quickly in comparison to previous COD games. It's almost as if the regular game modes play with hardcore rules and bullets generally deal a lot more damage. I hope they step up on the next COD because this one would be easy to forget. Expand

But ended up as a failure at tiny designs such as map design.

The same game recycled over and over again and it still sells 6,000,000 copies. The developers could litterly take a crap in the box and even tell you are getting a smelly turd instead of a game and it would sell a million copies, and get 9.0's from review sites. Gaming is such a joke

Very, very disappointing. Barely any work put into this game at all. Spawn next to an enemy happens far too frequently and I seem to lose connection a whole lot. The game engine has barely improved since CoD4. They seem to sit back, do as little work possible and just rake in the money because it carries the Call of Duty name. That won't last much longer.

    Oh IW....

The original COD 4 is highly regarded as one of the best games in the series, and the favorite of many. Unfortunately, since then, the COD games have become progressively worse. By MW2, things really got out of hand with its overpowered killstreaks and perks. After that, I could never take IW seriously again. I stuck with 3ark, and enjoyed Black Ops despite its flaws. At last, we have come to the not so epic conclusion; MW3. I like COD, but I warned my friends to not buy this. "It's going to suck," I said. Most didn't believe me.

Watching the playthrough of SP on YouTube, was I was amazed by how much was stolen from the previous MW games. "Back on the Grid" alone is completely stolen from COD 4's famous sniping stealth mission; down to the script, except now it in 10x more cheezy, predictable, and forced. References to past games arn't always bad; they can work. COD WAW had a similar mission, but there the elements are far more subtle, and the game still feels original. Here they just threw in whatever they could shove in there from past games with no originality; including ruining characters from COD 4 by pointlessly throwing them in only to die or disappear. I'm also tired of MW games always ending the same. You're hurt, lying on the ground, and you take advantage of a distraction to kill your foe. All this was cool in COD 4, but it's not original anymore!

I havn't even touched the MP yet; what a disaster that is. The first warning I had this game would suck was hearing about the return of quickscoping. Just when we were starting to move past that in BO, MW3 would have us backtrack to help some selfish "COD pro" make his YouTube montage. This may be a controversial topic, but it is my opinion quick/trick/no scoping is something that ruins the game. From what I see on YouTube, the killstreaks and certain weapons are still overpowered, and we all know from MW2 how much IW cares about fixing their games once they've taken our $. Map design is also terrible, and have a clostrophobic feel to them. Is sniping wasn't dead already, it certainly is now, and quickscoping has replaced it; what an insult. Beyond that, I can't say much since I havn't actually played the game online yet, I'll let whoever has describe the gun on gun action.

What a discrace for this game to be marketed as its own game. It's just MW2 with a few extra guns and whatnot and a forgetable story. IW, MW2 was bad, but it had a good story. This is just empty. The big review sites gave you the big reviews, but you get a 1 out of 5 from me for no originality or effort whatsoever. In short, don't buy this game, because that would only be rewarding bad behavior.

Call of Duty has really let everyone down and i think therefore they will lose alot of players too EA. Activision is really going too have too sort its act out for the next release! Anywho, the game is great, the story mode has a satisfying finish (Won't spoil it) and multiplayer plays similar to Modern warfare but isnt exactly the same, its hard to explain. Survival mode is a blast, a friend and I played it for HOURS and playing on multiplayer maps does make it more fun while also giving a chance to learn them. SpecOps missions are a HUGE improvement over MW2, I can easily say that every single one of them has replayability.

All in all, its a game you should try, if you dont like it, return it, dont listen to people who say its "the same game" or "omg no new content". Last time I check a brand new mode, a new campaign, a load of new specOps missions and a revamped multiplayer with new weapons, different types of killstreaks, new guns and 15+ new maps sounds more than just "DLC worthy"

Everything is brand new and fresh at that! There are no recycled gun sounds, building props, or character models. Everything is new and ready to go! The multiplayer itself is not confusing what so ever, but requires great skill to play. Its not like you can just one day pick up a controller and be awesome at the game right?..... RIGHT? I am a fan of IW, but it seems that this game that has been released this past Tuesday isn't up to my expectations. Having a year to make things better, storyline and multiplayer, it doesn't seem like it was upgraded at all. They didn't start from scratch but from a template of the past games and modifying it thinking that people wouldn't notice. It appears to me that the game wasn't given enough effort to be produced. The overall game is alright. The story was fine even though I got pretty bored after a couple missions. May I also mention that even on Veteran, it was easier in this game than in the past Modern Warfares, namely the first one. The multiplayer was crazy in a way that the whole map is like a maze. You move a few steps and there are 4 paths to choose from. The graphics are slightly better but if you are one to compare to another fps that came out recently, it isn't as great. This CoD game was made to make people play and enjoy due to the way the developers decided to make things more even, especially to those that are new to the game and not good at playing it. Overall, the game has not been improved much from its predecessors. The weapons, perks, the kills, the graphics, and even the maps. Really? Maps being reused? Seriously now, at least improve the reused maps. Make it better. Expand

And in all fairness it was expected that it would complete the on-going story, so no real surprises and some interesting terrain during gameplay gave me something to do for about four hours. Having finished up the campaign I dove straight into the multiplayer, oh how sadly disappointing this was! As I loaded in to the first map, it became apparent this was going to be a spray n pray affair. Tight alleys blind corners and absolutely nowhere to set up with a sniper rifle, so fine me thinks it's only the first map I was convinced that there was going to be a few I liked out of the 16 or so on offer. Oh how wrong can you be! It soon became apparent that not only the first map I tried was a Rambo style frag fest full of getting shot in the back or knifed going round a corner, but all of them were. It was with a sick sense of dread I realised that I had made a hideous error and bought a bit of a lemon as it were. Spec Ops is Modern Warfare 3's strong point. Survival mode is probably the best addition to modern warfare since the franchise started, and while many people say it's "copying" GOW or Zombies, it's still fun! They took a few things from those games and made a fun mode out of it. The missions are what you'd expect, exactly like the modern warfare 2 ones, but they're fun enough to not drag down Survival.

Multiplayer is a failure. Unfortunately it seems that Sledgehammer couldn't develop their own game. They took so many elements from Modern Warfare 2 that it seems that multiplayer is just a bad DLC for MW2. The maps are flat, boring, and encourage sprinting-and-shooting that turned off many gamers from MW2. The guns are well balanced and although Assault Rifles yet again dominate the battlefield, they offer enough variety to be tolerable. Overall, MW3 isn't much to get hyped over, and definitely doesn't deserve it's record-setting performance, but it is a COD game, and no COD is complete without SOME way of stealing hours.

It's true, they didn't make a lot of changes to this game from the last installment of MW3, and on reading that, I was disappointed. I liked the conflict of COD vs BF and wanted them to both make great improvements as a result. I also am disappointed at the way things transpired with the original makers of COD, it's a bad break. That being said, I picked up my copy of COD and popped it in ready to be disappointed with the same old game being done again. But it took me playing the game to realize...it doesn't matter. This game has been a favorite for a reason, its fun to play, the campaign (though not as good as the original) holds up equally as well as the previous 2 MW's and everything from spec ops to multiplayer are still just as great. SOOO much better than Black ops was, and I'm glad I spent the money. I can't help but think the negative reviews have to be a combination of BF fanboys and people upset (and rightfully so) about what the firing of the orig creators. That said, if you're on the fence about purchasing this game, pull the trigger (pun intended), if you loved the first two MW's, your going to love this one too. Stop bashing this game and making stupid excuses to do so...the graphics may not be as good as Battlefields, but in my opinion (and thats what all of these are, feel free to form your own) this game is more fun. Love them both, still a bigger COD fan. And for those that think I'm a COD fanboy, I'm a grown man and not the type to feel some sort of brand loyalty and force it down your throat. I just am upset I almost missed out on a great game because some people want to see this game fail for whatever reason. In closing...I agree I'd like to see them improve on this game and add more to it, but whats missing doesn't warrant it getting a 0 or a 5. I'd say this game is a solid 8 or 9, but I'm forced to give it a 10 to outweigh the negative response. Expand

Unlike in MW2, the guns all have some kick and sway which actually makes the game challenging. Kill streaks have now been replaced by the brilliant point streak system which rewards all styles of play. The specialist and support strike packages are also fun new additions which can change the way you play the game entirely. Weapon XP and proficiency are also a cool addition which adds a new dynamic to the game similar to the way cod points did in Black Ops... so again, really?? If this is "just an expansion pack" then I think it's an amazing one. I will say though that I do have some issues with the maps; there are too many buildings and they really do feel maze-like, and sometimes the lag is a little ridiculous. Well, I traded in BF3 for MW3 this week and was pleasently surprised. After MW2, I really wasn't expecting much but MW3 is a decent game:

    Pros:

    1) Guns are amazing.

    2) I really like what they have done with the kill streaks. The introduction of the support package is brilliant and makes the game more enjoyable for the average player that can't get a 20 kill streak every game.

    Cons:

    1) The lag is worse than ever. More than any game I have every played, your performance is directly related to your internet connection. This is the biggest letdown of the entire COD series. It's very frustrating hitting an enemy with half a magazine only to have them stop, turn, aim, and shoot with a pistol and kill you with one shot, then have the killcam show you never even fired.

    2) The spawn points are ridiculous. Just like MW2, you constantly spawn in front of an enemy, away from your team, only to get shot immediately. Why can Treyarch get this right and Infinity or Sledgehammer or who ever the heck can't?

    3) Speaking of not getting it right, what is the deal with quick scoping sniper rifles? Treyarch did a decent job of controlling this but the quick scoping idiots are back in full force in MW3. That had to be one of the 3 biggest complaints about MW2 and COD 4 and they still can't fix it? A sniper rifle is supposed to be a sniper rifle, not a close range single shot kill shotgun. Absolutely unacceptable.

    4) Campaign is utterly forgettable. I remember what an intriguing and amazing campaign COD 4 had, but apparently Infinity shot their load with that one installment because the last two Modern Warfare campaigns have been a monumental waste of time.

    5) Spec Ops mode is ok to play through once but there is no replay value what so ever. I found myself playing Black Ops zombies incessently because it was a ton of fun and always interesting. Plus you could play it online with 3 other people which always makes it interesting.

Overall I would give MW3 a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10. But multiplayer is the only reason to own this game. Black Ops is cleary the superior game in all regards. Treyarch is now the premier studio under the Activision umbrella.

And as for Battlefield 3, nice try EA. Call of Duty killer? Not even close and not even worth a review.

Major let down from Sledgehammer and IW. Multiplayer is addicting as the previous titles. I myself found many similarities from MW2 in MW3. Call it MW2.5 or over priced down loadable content it is the Modern Warfare 2 we've always wanted it to be. Balanced! Not much has changed but it's a definite improvement. In some aspects it lacks creativity. The multiplayer maps are claustrophobic and out of the 16 maps shipped with the game you seem to only cycle through seven of the same maps. These development studios aren't to blame for a game that feels literally rushed and unfinished. Activision sole purpose is to deliver a new CoD title every holiday season/every year. Gamers knew exactly what they were getting themselves into when they purchased this game. If you expected anything more than what it is your decision purchasing the game and being disappointed is your fault. Do some research before purchasing a title or at least rent the game, so on and so on. What frustrates me is I know so many people that made it clear to me that this is one of the worst games ever made and how they feel robbed but continue to play the game as if they somewhat enjoyed it? I'm left confused by the community or their intensions to totally destroy a video game in the first place. Overall the game is fun but it dosen't reinvent the genre or improve much to take it to the next level. The game deserves a 8.5. Anything less is a representation of a immature community. If you want to play Skyrim well then go play it without insulting a franchise that is in a completely different genre. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Being a Call of Duty fan since Activision release Call of Duty: Finest Hour, I can say that Modern Warfare 3 disappointed me. I thought it bring back the glory of Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2, but it didn't pan out that way. For starters, it really irked me that they killed off Soap after he just survived a knife to the chest, I would have rather it have been Price and Soap finishing off Makarov then Price and the useless character Yuri, who dies at the end anyways. The multiplayer is teeter totters between horrible and good, its not unplayable but the game lacks the gun game Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games kept badgering at. The player speed even with extreme conditioning is really slow, I don't even think that any of the previous Call of Duty titles were as slow as this game. Being as slow as it is, the guns can kill you faster than a speeding bullet. I would be fine with the guns being as powerful as they are if it wasn't for the lack of speed where you can't escape the gun fire. The multiplayer maps are by far the worst i have seen in a Call of Duty game, they are claustrophobic and leave little room to maneuver. The one shining light is that the spec ops is impeccable. The missions are pretty varied and fun with a friend and the survival mode is also enjoyable although i don't know why the developers wouldn't have made it four players instead of two. While this game isn't bad, it could have been great, instead you get a game that tries to be what the original Call of Duty 4 was except that it failed by using small and cramped maps and slow movement. So its a week in and what is MW3 like? Well.....its ok. I agree with most of the comments about it being boring and stale and the same thing. The 2 head developers for Infinity Ward left. So you have the 2 key people developing your game and they leave so if you were Activision, what would you do? Do you get a new team (Sledgehammer) and rush to create a brand new game from scratch and HOPEFULLY keep everyone happy? Or, do you go the safe route and try to recreate the greatness from the last game, with a few tweaks here and there to make people at least a little happy? When you have almost 2 hundred million dollars in projected sales on the line and a possible billions invested in future titles, you take the safe route. Now, told start freaking out saying I'm wrong and whatever. I AGREE that the multiplayer is bad. I have had lots of lag issues and overpowering of the hosts and etc. I AGREE Elite (as of right now) is worthless. I AGREE that the campaign is Hollywood blockbuster style. (I havn't touched Spec Ops so I cant judge that) But here is the thing, all and all its not a 0 out of 10. A 0 is ET for NES. The multiplayer will surely have 20 thousand patches like every other Call of Duty and there will always be bugs. But in the end, we can't go back to Black Ops because its probably gonna be hacked to crap soon cause no one is monitoring it anymore. You could go to Battlefield but I hate vehicles. So you have 2 options, enjoy MW3 until White Ops or whatever the next one from Treyarch will be, or till Respawn Studios (The 2 guys who left Infinity Ward) make there new game. Or you can broaden your game interests to other great games like Uncharted 3 and Batman Arkham City for PS3 or Gears 3 and Skyrim for XBOX360. All and all its not great..but we are all gonna play it and are probably have 2 Prestige's under your belt. Expand

modern warfare 3 is more of a twisted version of mw2 and black ops combined from multiplayer aspect. For campaign it gives you a visual treat with buildings collapsing to trains derailing.. but for a franchise whose sole is relying on multiplayer i would still say mw3 hasn't achieved its mark to call it a the game of 2011. There is no NEW element in the game except for kill confirmed.

This game is literally starting to look like a copy and paste job, with very minor visual and audio upgrades and a few changes to kill streaks you would be forgive for otherwise thinking you already own this game, even the menus are just copied and pasted from previous titles. This game is not worth $60 in my opinion, either rent it first to see if you like it or find a used copy.

If you have just started playing call of duty and by this I'm assuming the last and only COD game you've owned and played is Black ops, then you will enjoy this game. A greater balance is achieved between weapons and kill streaks giving players a much more leveled playing field. The game contains "epic" set pieces that will make you feel like you're in a Micheal Bay movie with tons of explosions and bullets flying by.

I don't think soldiers run so much in battle, so often. MW3 is popcorn entertainment. In summary, BF3 is a better game, MW3 is a funner game (I just wish it had better graphics). Expand

I'll even agree with Activision even to keep their game winning formula but give the fans like me better graphics and sound to give me a reason to pay $60 for their game. I don't care what anybody says about graphics and sound, these are helpful in immersing the player in game-play which is fact. Try playing a game with either no graphics or sound and it will suck no matter what video game it is. I use to love MW2 2 years ago but now they are just a cash cow. I would give them a better score if they had a better campaign story land Al like HALO or they improved the graphics and sound to give a better gunfight experience. Once ignorance stops taking place and it is actually played, people will indeed have fun. Personally, i think its a great game. It had a fantastic campaign and i'm addicted to multiplayer. It is a sequel to the 2 previous Modern warfares... there is not going to be a drastic change between them. Sequels usually don't fall far from previous titles.. that is the point of them. Now further into the multiplayer... the game in every aspect is different. The new gun customization system and choices give us SO many choices and play styles. They also fixed a lot of the problems in mw2 and haven't gotten credit for it. For example, Noobtubes, Commando, One-Man-Army. Not to mention that the connectivity by far is the best connection i have had on any CoD. Although their recent update caused some lag from the game itself, that can be fixed since an update of theirs caused it. Lets also take into account that game was just released. Also, there is no need to complain about the "feel" of modern warfare. I thought that the reason everyone loved and preferred the series was because they enjoyed the fast pace feel of it. Lastly, the graphics aren't much of an improvement... but there is a difference between mw2 and mw3. Lets be honest, it is not like you have been playing mw2 this whole time...just compare them to the previous CoD's graphics because that is what was made and played last. This game is amazing, by far the best CoD to date. Its a shame that it is not even being given a chance. Stay above the influence! Don't miss out on an amazing gaming experience. :) Expand

By far, the worst Call of Duty on PS3 to date. First off, it is practically a copypasta of Modern Warfare 2, execpt they recoded the game not to work at all on the PS3. First off, it is practically a copypasta of Modern Warfare 2, execpt they recoded the game not to work at all on the PS3. Let's start with multiplayer. I could except that their might me a few bugs at launch, but this game plays like a pre-alpha. There are severe framerate problems, especially while hosting. Matchmaking doesn't work at all, constantly getting booted from games, or just not being able to connect at all. The worst part, this game comes with Infinity Ward's non-existent support. Robert Bowling won't respond to any tweets about the framerate problems at all. He is pulling a Josh Olin by not acknowledging the framerate problems. I didn't buy a game that I hope might be fixed later. I heard that IW and SHG were begging for positive reviews after they saw the user reviews on Metacritic. What a joke. People are giving negative reviews because the game is flawed and they refuse to acknowledge it. We are just giving honest reviews.

Campaign: Wow, boring. The campaign is just like every other CoD game. Russia is the enemy and you travel to major cities to stop a WMD. After playing the unpredictable campaign of Uncharted 3, MW3's campaign is so predictable that it actually angers me.

Spec Ops: Worthless because of the framerate problems, simply unplayable like multiplayer.

I highly doubt that anyone tested this game on the PS3. Framerate sucks, support sucks, improvements to general gameplay are meaningless because the game doesn't run correctly. Overall, I would have to give this game a 0/10 because there is no option to rate it lower.

Welcome to the Madden of fps! Every year they release essentially the same game with a few tweaks and a bit more graphics and tell you that you gotta have it. And just like the Madden series, no matter how few new features there are people will still snap it up. Rent before you buy, make sure you actually want this game!

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
