Terrible, I've been buying the same game since MW1! I'm getting a refund. Too much hype, dated graphics, forgettable story and gameplay. This is not worth your time, Do yourselves a favor and get battlefield 3 on PC instead.

I am actually shocked to see such low ratings for MW3 here on metacritic. I understand that many of the complaints assert that the game offers nothing "innovative" or "new". But in terms of the multiplayer I would like to disagree. I have played every Call of Duty since CoD 2 and in my opinion World at War has been the worst one since CoD4. I understand that many of the complaints assert that the game offers nothing "innovative" or "new". But in terms of the multiplayer I would like to disagree. I have played every Call of Duty since CoD 2 and in my opinion World at War has been the worst one since CoD4. I remember the release of MW2 and how refreshing it actually was to have a fun, and addicting CoD game to play again. Treyarch in my book redeemed themselves with Black Ops. Every year, we the consumers, address certain aspects of the game we don't like, and then the CoD developers tweak those things.

But to say that this game is just a patched version of MW2 is ridiculous. The developers once again addressed many of the concerns we had with MW2. No game ending killstreak, no last stand, tweak the guns so not one individual gun stands out as overpowered. Which i think they did a great job with since I do not see an overwhelming amount of people running around with just one gun (even in Black Ops damn near everyone used a FAMAS or the AK-74u). Now to address the argument that nothing "innovative" or "new" has been offered.... First of all Sledgehammer and IW have offered us two new game types in multiplayer, something that hasn't been done since CoD 4. Now Kill Confirmed is my new favorite game to play. The strike package system is an awesome ADDITION, which helps reward those players who like to take objectives and shoot down air support (something that also has never been done in a Call of Duty game). Many argue that Call of Duty is just a run-and-gun lone wolf type of game, but then, if that were true, why wouldn't every game type just be Free for All? Sledgehammer really did their best to address this issue, and I for one love using all of the Pointstreak tiers. To me giving this game a score of "0" is nonsense. It seems to me that the average score of 2.7 is the product of a biased sample. While the majority of us are off enjoying and playing the game, some disgruntled individuals are on here complaining and it seems to get worse every year.

PS3 scores for every CoD since CoD4:
    CoD4 Modern Warfare: 8.7
CoD World at War: 7.1 CoD Modern Warfare 2: 5.8
CoD Black Ops: 5.6 CoD Modern Warfare 3: 2.7

Every year in my opinion, the games are getting gradually better, but the scores just seem to be getting worse... Modern Warfare 3 is the best in the series yet, and the majority of these metacritic reviews are reactionary and inflammatory. Give the game a shot and if you don't like it, give it an honest review, with a honest score and then trade the game back in or use it as a coffee coaster.

That method didn't fly now people want to say the reviews are fake. You released a bad product and are being exposed. I am not a BF or COD fanboy as far as shooters go I am a die hard Socom fanboy. But first and foremost I am a gamer and I like technology thats why I have a LCD LED TV and awesome surround system and a PS3 with blu-ray and etc. I appreciate innovation and pushing the bar and thats where MW3 epically fails. Its running off of out dated technology where as BF3 is runing off a brand new engine with amazing capabilities. I rented both titles to see which I would like and BF3 is the best first person military shooter I have ever played. Infinity Ward got it right with MW2 but we all have played that game into the ground we really didn't need or want a carbon copy of MW2. We wanted MW3 to be better and build off of what part 2 started. Sadly they dropped the ball on this one. Expand

While I haven't gone through the whole campaign yet, I've been playing multiplayer religiously, and I've done a pretty good number of single player Survival missions. I love it. The multiplayer has considerably improved from MW2 (I didn't play Black Ops) being more balanced, there isn't 90% quick scopers in the game any more, and now you actually have a chance to take them down. The maps are well designed, with a few more central locations where the fighting can take place, and for the most part are seemingly more fast-paced than MW2, with perhaps lacking small maps such as "Rust", however "Dome" does come close. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.... I hope everyone enjoys $60.00 map packs. CoD has become so generic it's not even fun or worth it to buy the newest version. It sits in the same boat as Madden, the developers feel the need to re-make the game every year in an attempt to maximize profits. Call of Duty died for me after Call of Duty 4.

first the single player experience, taking place in Africa Europe and the US the game really takes you for a ride as you play the american delta force and the rogue British task force from the previous game, as far as characters go they are all pretty shallow and except the few one liners and "chargetake cover" shouts your interaction with them is kept to a minimum until the end of the game, the only note worthy character is captain price but after developing him for 4 games its not really a surprise.

the very loose story is basically an excuse to take you through some really amazing set pieces, you will have the standard call of duty mash up of airstrikes and rail shooters like the last games which can be good at times but they feel redundant most of the time and even feel like they are slowing the pace of the game, for example you have a level in paris where you take control of a AC-130 and the control will rotate between your character plane taking you out of the action seeing how using the AC-130 isn't challenging like the fight that takes place on the ground at the same time.
if you played the last 2 games a closure is nice but if you are looking for a deep story shooter you better wait for something else.

Of course the focus of the game is the multiplayer, it didn't change much from what iv'e see they added a new game mode or 2 but nothing groundbreaking again the multiplayer is solid, it was good in the previous games and it retains the same standards here, the multiplayer is very fast paced and "arcady" like iv'e come to expect from COD.

like i said it a solid game if you like the previous games this is pretty much more of the same for better or worst.

Well, I'm happy to report that while it certainly has its flaws (We'll get to that later) Modern Warfare 3 is a well executed, well crafted first-person shooter that is a worthy sucessor to MW2. The story picks up where the last Modern Warfare left off, after suffering defeat in their failed attempt at invading the united states the Russians launch an all out invasion of Europe. Now, members of The United States Military and Task Force 141 must find a way to prevent global armageddon. The story, while it is so convaluted (Russia could never invade the US!) it is still entertaining as hell, it provides closure for the trilogy (No cliffhanger this time) and provides for some epic cinematic set pieces. The game still runs on an excellent 60 frames per second, which adds to the silky smooth feel of the controls. You're either a fan of this gameplay by now or you're not. The campaign still features excellent variety, one moment you'll be providing cover for a squad in an AC-130 and in another you'll be tearing up enemies in a UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle), these stop the game from feeling repettitive and makes it fun to play. Along with the campaign that'll take you around 4-6 hours to complete, you also get a revamped Spec-Ops mode, which now includes a survival mode where you along with another player try to survive against endless waves of enemies weilding weapons (No zombies here if that's what you were hoping for). While it isn't nearly as awesome as Zombies, it is still a blast to play. The Spec Ops missions are also really well done, and are fun to play through multiple times. The level design in the single player, special- ops mode/survival mode, and the multiplayer is exceptional and is a step up from the previous Modern Warfare games. So I've mentioned the positives, now it's time to talk about the negatives. While the graphics engine isn't terrible per se, it looks really bad in some parts of the game. Multiple times I saw texture pop ins and small glitches. Come on guys, we live in a post- Battlefield 3 era and they are honestly trying to say that this is the best that they could do?! Even the most hardcore Call Of Duty fan cannot deny how goregous Battlefield 3 looks, but here when I look at MW3's graphics it makes me feel like I traveled back in time to the stone age of gaming. It also makes me feel like I'm playing an expansion pack for Modern Warfare 2 instead of a full fledged sequel. The multiplayer (Which is the reason a lot of people play these games) while definately a step up from the unbalanced MW2, still has a number of overpowered weapons and death streaks. Add that in with the number of camping spots and you are sure to have some fustrating matches. It was clear that when around 40 staff left Infinity Ward that Modern Warfare 3 was going to take a hit, and in some areas it does. While it is still worth full price, this entry WILL NOT win over anybody who hates this franchise with a passion. Here's hoping that Black Ops 2 will restore the franchise to it's former glory and change-up the familiar COD formula. Expand

Call of duty has been using the same engine and the same formula for 9 years now. It's beyond ridiculous. This game is no different than mw2. Oh sure, slap a few maps, few new modes, pull a campaign out of your ass, slap a pricetag and it's good to go. Just make sure "call of duty" is on the box so all the little kids know what to buy. Sad thing is, a good PC gamer could easily just mod MW2 to make it exactly like MW3. It's not hard since they're already identical. It wouldn't be so bad if it was selling for half the price, but $60 is just a complete rip-off. However way you look at, it could've been sold for 15 and they would STILL make profit. I'm glad this game is getting ripped to shreds on metacritic, it's good to know that there is some people who have class, decent taste, and some sense of value. Expand

Multiplayer is as epic and ridiculously addictive as you would expect, certainly blowing away the competition from another certain game that came out recently which I will leave unnamed. They added so many things to the game, most of it being nuance. This is still Call of Duty, but it's the most well done game in series history. The maps are very well done. I love them, but they will naturally take some time to get used to. Spec Ops is improved over the last game. Adding Survival mode was a smart move and is a lot of fun!

Overall great game that will make you sink a lot of time into it!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good single player campaign and good multiplayer fun. Great fun rejoining Frost, Price and friends and playing as Yuri the possibly questionable Russian is a nice addition. Mulitplayer will take some getting used to after Black Ops, which is overall probably a better effort (go Treyarch), but looks this is the kind of game I want to find out more about. Say what you like about expectations and glitches, its still MW and its great being part of something that effects so many gamers. If you enjoy slightly unrealistic fast paced shooters and dont take things too seriously you will probably enjoy this. Nice work Infinity Ward. Expand

So many disgruntled people expecting something different, something not COD. Really? Did you really think they would change the formula? It's not a new series of games, it's MODERN WARFARE 3. A continuation. It is what it is, it's the game Jerry Bruckheimer would be proud to have his name attached to. Look, it runs perfectly out of the box, you can play it on a laptop 3 years old or a top of the range pc. You can play it on 2 consoles that are approaching the end of their cycle perfectly. It has over the top voice acting, far fetched battle scenes and unrealistic combat. That's what COD is all bout. The comparisons to BF3 are boring and pointless. They both attack the Battle scenario completely different. Battlefield is what it is, a "battlefield". Tanks, planes, helicopter's, they haven't changed the formula since the first one. They are trying to push the technology but just read pc forums and see the problems people are having with it. GFX card companies struggling to get updated drivers out in order for you to achieve decent FPS. People with high end pc rigs having to enter BIOS and disable Hyper Threading to stop stuttering. That doesn't happen with the COD games, you hit play and it just runs. I bought them both and love them both but this constant comparison is just silly and and people hating because it's "More of the same" is equally as silly. After all, how far can they take the combat scenario? You want realism join the army. If you like COD games, just get it. What surprises me is reading the various forum postings about this title on quite a few sites, a surprising number of people pirated this title and STILL moan about it. Unbelievable. To sum up. Remember that? All of the Black ops maps were fun and I had a real blast on each one. MW3 maps are boring and small and rely on twitch reactions to get kills. Much of my deaths on this game are from campers or unbelievable lag within the game, where I clearly shoot the enemy first but on their killcam they clearly shoot me first. I have played well at times but I can't feel a sense of achievement because the only reason I did well was because the opposing team were experiencing lag too. Where is the fun in that? The simple fact is that yes, it is kinda similar to MW2 - ok then, very similar! But to be honest, that doesn't bother me!! I really enjoyed the storyline, the graphics were good, I like the new survival concept and the missions, I like the new strike package options with support, assault and specialist... All in all its perfectly fine for what it is, and it is what it was supposed to be! A fps where you shoot everything that moves in the campaign before going online to complain to your friends about how many drop shotters, quick scopers and campers there are (something that is not the fault of IF). The issue with all these negative reviews is the player - not the game! You cannot order a CoD game that follows the CoD format and then complain about it - what were you expecting?? The narrative lacks the focus, cohesion, professionalism, and sheen that the second game had (the watermark for the Modern Warfare franchise), and is over much, much too quickly. The levels are also something of an eyesore, with a nearly monochromatic color palate (save for a batch of welcome blue skies) and blurry, pixelated textures. I do not understand where you would get such a score from, perhaps all of you are just die hard Battlefield fans that are trying to degrade Call of Duty, or you are just angry at the fact that you can't get more than ten kills in a given match? I have been playing Call of Duty since 2007 (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare), and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is one of the best in the series. I say one of the best because Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 probably has the slight edge being that most of its features are the basis of MW3 but to consider MW3 to be an expensive DLC for MW2 is completely nuts, because MW3 offers a ton of new content and features. Spec Ops Survival Mode is really good and online multiplayer has been improved. In my opinion and in the opinion of many others, MW2 was one of the best multiplayer games ever made, and by sticking to this winning formula MW3 will prove to be a huge success as well. With the addition of new killstreaks (Osprey, Juggernaut Suit, Overwatch Helicopter, etc.), the integration of a completely new killstreak rewards system, ability to upgrade and level up your weapons, and the addition of completely new weapons, multiplayer has never been so addicting. The graphics are the same as MW2 for the most part, although the maps appear to have more detail to them. The majority of maps take place in urban enivironments that provide a lot of cover and distractions compared to the MW2 maps where the majority took place in vast, open areas (reason why so many people camped in MW2). The maps in MW3 seem to be larger than the maps in Black Ops, but smaller than the maps in MW2. The maps are pretty good and if you are a Call of Duty Elite member you will be receiving many more additional maps over the course of the year. Overall this game is very solid and is a must have for anyone that enjoys playing online multiplayer games. The only drawbacks of the game are that the campaign lacks depth, the servers for online multiplayer are having issues currently (the Hot Fix system developed for Black Ops will solve this issue very soon with an update), and I would have liked to see a couple of large open maps such as the ones in MW2 just to mix it up a bit. I have to give MW3 a 10/10. MW3 integrates the best features of Black Ops with MW2 to bring you the best Call of Duty yet. Expand

Now, look at what made Half-Life 2 game of the decade, it did not really introduce anything new, but it fixed what was wrong with Half-Life. Half-Life's expansions added what was new, Half-Life 2 fixed everything that was wrong.

That was the issue with Modern Warfare 2, while Call of Duty 4 set the table and its expansions added new maps with new gameplay, that is what MW2 did, it did not fix anything, but it added new stuff. Infinity Ward fixed that, they did add new modes but they knew that to stay relevant in the video game biz, they needed to fix everything up.

They did add new modes, these modes were strikingly similar to other modes, yes, but the fine line of distinctions is what made them fun to play. Now I bet you in Modern Warfare 4 (they should drop Call of Duty, because that title is now Treyarch's), they will add new graphics and they will add more distinctions between the gameplay.

Look at everything they fixed: killstreaks, gameplay, audio, servers. You see, blame their work on MW2 for what is wrong, if they did their technique for MW3 on MW2, we would have seen a far better game, but does that stop MW3 from being a good game.

I mean even if they are just fixing everything, they took the time to add new features: many new modes, many new guns and the graphics run at 60 FPS. Lets go back to modes, they will add more distinctions in the next installment of Modern Warfare. I also expect Treyarch to do this as well with their next WW2 or Cold war game. Now to guns, every gun is the same, its just how you use it. Now to graphics, this is the hardest thing to get finished and make better, I bet you if they were to match the game's graphics up to lets say Uncharted 3, the IW Engine would overload and it would take them up to November 2012 to finish the game, they will advance the graphics for the next game, don't worry, but by adding 60 FPS they did do a good job on fixing the graphics that they already had.

Don't listen to the negative reviews, actually play the game for yourself.

When you have been gaming for a few decenia like I have this is a very troubling development to observe and I hope it is one that will end soon, however I am fearful the opposite might actually be true and this is just the beginning of an actual movement of marketeers influencing kids into thinking they have but one choice when it comes to a certain type of game.

Every big release seems to be positioned opposite a different game of the same genre and even before they have been released a battle of words ensues on the internet as to whose game is better, more advanced or prettier and of course the ever present used-so-often-it-lost-all-its-meaning "fanboy" crops up in every other sentence.

What you guys need to realize is that you are not fighting your own battle, you are actively involved in the marketing of a product and are willfully doing the job someone normally gets paid to do. You are not living in world where you need to chose between drinks, books, games, etc. You do not live in an either/or world. You can drink Coke AND Pepsi, you can wear Levis AND Dockers, you can eat Big Macs AND Whoppers, you can read Harry Potter AND War and Peace, watch The Shield AND The Wire, you can play Dark Souls AND Skyrim, CoD AND BF, etc.

It is baffling to read 'reviews' on this site and at the same time be 100% certain the persons who wrote them did not play the game they're reviewing for 1 second but are actively repeating the same lines that have been said over and over again for hundreds of such 'reviews' in a row. The actual lines put into their mouths by the "other company" trying to outshine their competitors.
I want metacritic to reflect the opinion of people playing a game and providing me with insight into their experience again, just as it used to be. What I do not want is to read hundreds of nerd-rage fuelled marketing stooges supporting one developer or another not being aware that their fueling of the fire is actualy equivelant to putting money in their pockets.

    Stop it, now!

If you go to the cinema to watch an action film you don't complain that all you got was explosions & people shouting, it's the same for this game...

They have succeeded at every single aspect of that. The singleplayer is intense and succinct. It flows beautifully and pits the player right in the middle of some extremely entertaining action. It properly rivals the glorious singleplayer of Call of Duty 4. Spec Ops mode is absolutely enthralling, you really are in for a treat with Survival. It'll keep you hooked for hours. And the Multiplayer. It is a well known fact that Black Ops multiplayer was a poor show for a Call of Duty game. Let's just say, the multiplayer in this has brought back what we missed in Call of Duty 4. Balanced gameplay, fast paced gun-on-gun gameplay, and an absolutely entertaining and enjoyable video gaming experience. It really is everything they said it would be.

If you want me to compare this to Battlefield 3, which I also own, then all I can say is to pick what is right for you. If you like more teamplay and tactical gameplay, go for Battlefield. If you want fast-paced and intense gameplay, go for Call of Duty. I like both, so I will play both and enjoy both.

As a Call of Duty player since the series came out in 2003, I was legitimately worried that this game would fall down the same hole as Black Ops did last year. My God I was wrong, this is everything I could ask for in what is one of my favourite video game series of all time. This is not Black Ops, this is not Modern Warfare 2, and this is not Modern Warfare 1. This is Modern Warfare 3, in a league of its own. Best game in the series to date. I implore you to at least rent this game. You will enjoy it.

Then when I went to Gamefest and actually played Modern Warfare 3 along with Battlefield 3. I really enjoyed both. The gameplay is very different to the previous Modern Warfare games , its actually incredible compact and close quarters which me and my friends had to adjust to (especially considering Battlefield 3 so huge) and once you get over the very close CQC it is very intense and action packed. Snipers are reduced to a minimum, which is interesting. Sometimes the spawn points do seem bad though which is a negative (friends been spawned right into grenades or enemies).

The concept of how capturing domination points gives you a point for your killstreak, was a great idea and support killstreaks is a interesting addition and gives you quite a power to help your team and EMP is really useful finally. Also the weapon leveling is great addition and the weapon proficency is rather intriguing and kinda awesome. But giving people a point to their killstreak when capturing points is a very great idea. Now people actually bother to capture points. Many times in BLOPS and previous MW games have I been capturing and pretty much only 2 other people with me, now people actually bother to capture. Yes the engine does look dated and hopefully the will design a new engine, I dont see it selling too well if they continue to use the same engine. The knifing is really fast, and I do get annoyed with the quick stabbing (unrealistic) but it looks like its been set for everyone commando style melee which makes it balanced but its much better in BF3 how the knife works, its far too fast. Also I think the shotgun is far to lobotmized, it completely cut out at a certain range which I can see why would be done but ultimately that have gone to far with it. Especially considering in CQC fighting a shotgun is really deadly. However the gameplay is still pretty fun, and better graphics does not mean better gameplay any real gamer will tell you that. Lastly it still runs pretty well, also the Sweeping Helicopter Killstreak is incredible and awesome and one of the best ever. I do however express annoyance that delta force isnt available in Multiplayer only in Spec Ops, really love that re-enforcement. I do support Infinity Wards original members whom got the short end of the stick with activision refusing to pay royalities, which is wrong but Sledgehammer and the outer layer of Infinity Ward have certainly done a good job with Modern Warfare 3. It is completely miles better then Modern Warfare 2 and Sledgehammer and this Version of Infinity Ward show they are the right people for the job.

This is a spectacular, fun war comic book. Battlefield 3 is like a boring Tom Clancy novel with very little merit. I struggled through that campaign over the course of a week. (nice graphics/sound/animation engine though).

This game is exactly as good as previous Infinity Ward Call of Duty games have been on release, perhaps better, only this time around there is a viable competitor, so the witch burners are out.

Online is the same as always, long, fun and progressive, but it is sort of the same as MW2 online, (except for the maps). Survivor mode is the highlight of the game for me, what is more fun than mowing down hundreds of enemies. On a map like resistance its quite a calm level where you just have fun killing people, (until wave 26 when you get like 3 juggernauts, 2 helicopters a ton of attack dogs and suicide bombers as well as the normal guys who are heavily armoured anyway). but on a map like lock down, you need to be on your toes as the enemies get harder quicker. Survivor mode is great fun and every map is great.

Special ops aren't as good as they were in MW2 but they are still good, i particularly like the stealth ones. but some missions are just a bit to hard and get annoying when you keep on dying, but still, the special are good.

Sadly Modern Warfare 3 is basically Modern Warfare 2 with 16 new maps, a few new killstreaks, modes, perks, and leveling mechanic. This may seem like a substantial amount of new content, but is it really worth $60? In my opinion Call of Duty has taken a turn onto the sports genre road. Theres a new one every year, with just a few new additions to warrant a new release. Now the Modern Warfare campaign for me was always just so-so. The huge set pieces and high octane action are straight out of a Bay film. But really the huge explosions and crazy action can't really hide the badly written, and sometimes confusing, story. Spec Ops was first introduced to us in Modern Warfare 2 and im glad to say its back. For me Spec Ops was more entertaing and rewarding playing with a friend, then raging at a other people online. They have also introduced a new mode, Survial, which isn't at all original, bascially a horde mode, where waves upon waves of enemies came at you. This mode is being implemented into almost every FPS now a days, its fun yes, but i would like to see something new for a change. The graphics haven't really changed much, if at all, from Modern Warfare 2. A quick glimpse at a screen with Modern Warfare 3, could easily be mistaken for its older counterpart. The soundtrack is nothing to special, but it does have its moments. There are many rehashed noises when firing guns, reloading, etc. but thats to be expected. Overall this addition to the Call of Duty franchise feels more like a shallow expansion than a full fledged game. Activision is going to end up running Call of Duty into the ground with these yearly outings (Guitar Hero/Tony Hawk), hopefully upcoming entries into the franchise can make a fresh start into something that has become very stale in the past years.
