In all, I loved the story, but it still felt EXACTLY like MW2, the only reason anyone would by this would be because of the storyline, but in the competition of MW3 vs BF3, well i think we have a clear winner. Yeahhh. This game really needed to be more advanced. Just the same old dribble another time around.
It's a shame they don't even try improving it. The multiplayer is as always. The story is ridiculous. The only thing they improved was a way for them to make more money on "elite". I'm almost positive map packs are going to be $20 now. I already feel ripped off for a reskinned MW2. Atleast

These guys did nothing. I am going to trade this in before i get to deep in the money trap which is Activision.

Major dissapointment. Agree with everyone else, this game is MW2 with minor additions. Elite is an absolute mess that simply doesn't work, never can login and do anything. I think Infinity ward have lost it, Treyarch are the way forward for Call of Duty now.

I'm pretty sure all this was a complete misunderstanding. Infinity must have printed the new graphics of the real mw3 on old copies of mw2 they had laying around. Who knows maybe they ask for our addresses and send us the actually mw3 with an IOU 60 bucks

Whilst some new modes have brought a bit of a refreshing change, its still too much of the same. Teamwork is still non-existent despite the creators bringing in modes like Kill Confirmed and Team Defender. Every mode still ends up with everyone playing deathmatch. They're just ranking upWhilst some new modes have brought a bit of a refreshing change, its still too much of the same. You can even tell the die hards are getting fed up with it as I don't see a lot of people prestiging. They're just ranking up and staying there.

The menu system has been made more complicated and setting up a new class now takes an age. Some of the things aren't where you would expect them. Want to alter your killstreaks? You have to go into Create a Class then actually go into a class and change it there.

And the bugs. At many points I am getting less than 1 FPS. Yes, you read that right - less than one frame per second. If you are host, its as bad as it was on MW2. Also Ground War just feels laggy and slow to respond - I cannot believe that just adding another 2 players to a game mode brings the system to a crawl but this has been the case since COD4. Its definitely a PS3 memory limitation issue as the 360 doesn't suffer from it. Seriously though, in regards to the framerate issues, this is completely unacceptable with a game engine thats years old now and on a platform where the hardware is fixed. I could understand this happening on a PC where you have infinitesimal hardware combinations but on a console?

Didn't take the cheaters long to figure out glitches and killstreak cheats but these do seem to be addressed quicker and there is now the ability in the pre-game lobby to select a player and report them.

However nothing gets away from the fact that if this was HalfLife 2 it'd be a mod or the fact that it could have just been released as a map pack for MW2. Maybe it should have been, even at the price it is - the same as was done for BF:Bad Company 2 with the Vietnam pack, talking of which I finally got into the Battelfield series last week with BF3 and I have to say that it just shows the shortfalls of MW3 in spectacular style.

Call of Duty MW3 is one of the most over-hyped and overrated games of this gen alongside Battlefield 3. Cod MW3 is supposed to be a sequel to MW2, but it offers nothing new to the table. Modern Warfare 3 was hyped up to be amazing. It was, but no more amazing than MW2 was. The small things that really irritated me, was the laziness of developers. Titles and emblems are exactly the same. The multiplayer challenges have been named the same, (absentee killer, or something like that) it's very embarrassing. I actually cringed while perusing these lists, it's really bad that they didn't come up with new names. I still enjoy playing it, but I really don't think they should be allowed to charge another $50 for this. I'm not sure how true it is, but I heard people even found the code for MW2 maps in the PC install of MW3? How is that acceptable. It hints to a true "copy and paste" job. Spec Ops, oh my god. One of the missions is the same setting, objective, and feel to a campaign missions. I am not surprised people have all jumped on to rate this game badly. It's not that loads of people hate it, it's just a lot of people feel strongly that it was a disappointment. And not enough people are defending it by coming on and putting a 10/10 on. I honestly feel my score has been justified. I have enjoyed the game, but it really is not much different. They brought us new guns, new maps, and two new game modes. I know they won't change the format, I don't want them to. I want them to not charge us as much because it really isn't a brand new game. IGN themselves said the Campaign lacked any immersion of the player.

    I hope you enjoyed reading.

The multiplayer however, is a different story. It's a mixed bag for me since while the maps and guns aren't as good as in MW2, everything else (which there is) is greatly improved. I'd be hard-pressed to call this an expansion pack but then comes the spec ops with survival mode which would be better with 4 people, and the other spec ops missions are a BLAST. So while I say it's no MW2, that's like saying that a trillion dollars is no blowjob from the girl of your dreams while you're high on acid and swimming in a pool of liquefied gold yet not burning. - Addition of new strike packages - I like the idea of catering to different player types. I think this creates a more interesting environment and awards different play styles.

    Cons
    - matching and lag compensation and hit detection - penalizing people with fast internet connections? I often get 4-5 shots off on my screen, and inevitably get killed. I watch to killcam, and see not only did I get maybe 1 shot off on my competitors screen, but I may have even been facing the wrong way. Ridiculous. I have no problem getting beat by someone who is better than me at COD, I don't play that often. But it is quite frustrating to play, only to get 1:2 k/d ratio constantly because I have a decent internet connection.
    - Maps - very poor construction. Little to no cover. High killstreaks require more "luck" than skill in my opinion. No innovation (maps in CODMW2 were excellent, multiple levels, areas for cover)
    - graphics - meh ... nothing new here
    - guns even the "new" guns are just copies of MW2 (mp7 is uzi, FAD is the same as the 2000 gun)
    - spawning - The assault package is almost worthless because of spawn points; which often are right behind me.

If this had come out 2 years ago, great. I would still only give it a 6-7 based on the many multiplayer shortcomings.

I have seen that some of the producers have tweeted saying "this game is definitely not a 1.7" or something of that nature. I agree, but it is no greater than a 4-5 for sure at this point. Certainly not this great new experience that they so highly touted with all the hype.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. COD 4 MW and MW2 were legendary, it made the series what it is today. I was looking forward to it, it was one of my highest anticipated games since GTA 4 back in 2008. Infinity Ward really took a hit when 40+ people left, MW3 is the result of it. While I'm not saying it was bad, I would prefer the last 2 modern warfares over this.

The story was pretty good, the new guy Yuri is like Soap was back in COD4. It was also pretty touching the way the events leading up to Soap's death transpired, but the ending was the sweet revenge we all were waiting for.

Overall, great game, good graphics and other stuff. It's just too repetitive, Thats all.

Come on Activision you are supported by BlizzardI really can't begin to understand how critics are giving MW3 tens. I don't see how they can't see that this is the same recycled material all over again! Jumping right into the game excited to play, I was taken back by the same graphics (from the first MW) and very little variety in abilities by your player in the single player version. Come on Activision you are supported by Blizzard they can't give you enough money to get/create a new game engine?! With that being said, the story line was captivating enough over the years to get me to purchase the game, mainly due to the fact that I wanted to see what happened next. In truth, most First Person Shooters do not change all that much over the years; but with the Modern Warfare (MW) series just seems to get worse not better over the years. The multi-player is just poorly executed. MW3 gives players the same abilities in roughly the same size levels as MW, MW2; this in turns makes a potent mix for players. It is often frustrating to play multi-player with randomly being killed when spawning, and the infamous grenade throw from across the level. You think over the past years that these things would be handle or at least researched to try to improve for a better multi-player gamer experience. In my opinion you are playing a steroid version of Counter Strike Source, in the sense that all the levels are the same size and the pace of the game is extremely too fast to be enjoyable. Things I would like to see implemented in multi-player. 1. If you are in a building have the ability to set up fortifications; based off the amount of kills you get. It would add an element of challenge to the game oppose to people doing the dolphin flop (going from full stand to prone) and somehow killing people with head shots. Also as a catalyst to the people who are doing these fortifications the people with Air Support Perks whatever they may be can blow the buildings up. Seriously Activision, it has been over four years make the darn building blow apart; you did it in the campaign! 2. I say this with the utmost respect, expand the Goddamn Maps!!!!!! I am tired of playing small levels and getting blown up at my spawn point, however random it may be. I have enjoyed playing Activision's Games for many, many years but this game and this franchise; at this point I don't see redeeming itself. I dare it to do better! Expand

This is truly just another lag-fest, complete with annoying trash-talking kids. $60 is criminal to charge for a piece of DLC, which is what this game feels like. There are games more deserving of your money than this. Expand

The sound effects are beyond terrible. For example, one of the pistols (forget which one) sounds like a short burst of static when you shoot it... Some voice samples are almost comical. The in game mic quality is on a third world level. The maps are cluttered and boring. The menu and points etc popping up on the screen are a copy & paste from MW2. The perk tiers are messed up (quick reload and aim down sights now takes up 2 slots). 'Hekkkktik epic quikscoppezzz' are back.... COD Elite is a total waste of money. The campaign has some interesting parts, but is generally boring gameplay. Honestly the game is just garbage. It has become the McDonalds of the games industry. People keep going back for more, but really, it's just crap.

After 5 years or so of basically playing COD exclusively (not quite, but pretty bloody close to it), I think I'm done with the series.

The best thing to come out of buying this game is that I've raged from always playing COD and now have loads more time to play the multitude of truly epic games that are out there. Seriously, don't waste your time on money on this. It's been a good year for games. Go play something else.

modern warfare 3 was a HUGE letdown. Modern warfare 3 is basically an overpriced, over hyped modern warfare 2.5. There is one person in every game who is much better than everybody else, and that team usually wins. The spawning is also horrible. It almost always sets you up so that you are killed by the person who just killed you, or you kill the perso who just killed you. The melee is also bad, it seems to me very random and sporadic. The killstreaks are almost all the same, the only positive thing about this aspect is the fact that you can set killstreaks by class. Other than that, the weapons are horrible, the graphics have not been improved since the original Modern Warfare, and there is no option to adjust the volume of the music or toggle auto-aim on and off. The campaign is the same thing over and over again as usual. The theater in multiplayer is a joke. Half the time the editing you do is not saved correctly at all, and every time you play a video it changes completely. I wouldn't even call this game an expansion pack like some people. I thought Black Ops was a step back from World at War, but this takes the prize. Modern Warfare 2 was 100% better in every aspect. This game expects everyone on earth to be big Michael Bay fans with the endless explosions, gassing of London and being pseudo-killed an uncountable amount of times in a helicopter. I will not argue that the multiplayer is bad, because it is good, the developers are just lazy and added about 10% more stuff into the game. All the kilstreaks are still there, you don't get any new attatchments, the leveling-up system with the weapons is poor at best and you will find yourself so bored with it after 4 hours (even after finishing the short campaign) that you will sell it on Ebay. BF3 is a great game. if you're looking for a full on war simulation i would recommend that any day. but if you're looking for smooth, fast paced skirmishes, mw3 is the best. so stop driving down the score, cuz we aren't on your metacritic being that big of **** the new pointstreak reward system helps incorporate new ways to play multiplayer. many of the guns are the same as mw2, but it's the third game in a trilogy, what do you expect? the new guns kick @$$ anyway. the maps may not be amazingly awesome, but they are good maps and do the trick fine. unlocking things instead of buying them (blops) gives you a much better sense of accomplishment. THIS GAME IS NOT A MW2 MAP PACK. it has so much more. consider this : normal CoD map packs are $15. they come with 4 maps. PERIOD! if this were a map pack, it would be a $60 pack that comes with: 16 new maps, with access to CoD elite and a multitude of new dlc, many new weapons, 2 ENTIRELY NEW WAYS TO USE KILL STREAKS a whole new challenge list, 10 more prestige levels, a level cap raised to 80, prestige shop, all new spec ops mode, survival mode, 6 more hours of story for just in case your internet is down. not to mention there aren't any modders on mw3 yet, unlike any CoD before blops. If you've ever enjoyed playing a CoD, i would recommend picking it up. at first glance it is cut and paste of modern warfare 2, but i guarantee that if you sat down with it for 30 mins, you would realize that it's so much more, and be just as hooked on it as you have been for any other call of duty. P.S. IMO the single best FPS ever made was Battlefield Bad Company 2. so if you were disappointed even slightly with BF3, pick up BFBC2 Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Modern Warfare 3 is the new installment of the call of duty series, it has its positive and negatives like most games. First for the ups, they again have a very nice story in the campaign aspect and the spec ops comes back, which in my opinion is fun and perfect for playing with a friend. Also a new game mode is introduced in the spec ops aspect: the survival mode which is really not that bad, and kind of fun but gets boring after a while. In my opinion i think that activision didn't let the survival mode reach its full potential by only allowing 2 people to play since these things are best when played with friends. Now for the core of call of duty: the multiplayer, this also has its ups and downs. The weapons are more or less like always with the exception of the machine pistols, when paired with akimbo these pistols are overpowered even after they were patched to make them less powerful. There are also some other weapons that are overpowered like the chinese weapon, the Type 95. Something new that has been implemented is the proficiency system and the levels for the weapons. This is something i actually quite enjoyed since it lets you customize your gun further. The new Kill Streak system actually also pleased me a lot in that there is different kill streaks for different types of players, for the more aggressive and for the ones that like to be more tactic and defend the objectives. The MOAB i think was a nice addition to the series since you don't need to equip it, its there if you get it. Also its nice that it doesn't finish the game and instead gives double XP to the people in that game. The prestige tokens was a nice addition but its nothing major, except maybe for the fact that you can unlock things so that you don't have to wait to level up to have them. Now for the downsides: The spawn systems are just horrible, the other day i was playing headquarters and i just spawned in front of an enemy player at the beginning of the game!. Also the overpowered weapons which i mentioned before. The knifing system is pretty horrible since some times when you knife someone the knife seems like it rebounds from the player. I have mixed feelings about elite since it is something else that activision is doing to get more money from us but at the same time you get the map packs before the people in your console and also with a small discount and some additional services. Overall it is basically just another call of duty with some improvements in the multiplayer and different maps. Expand

The game sticks to the good ol MW formula. Flat campaign filled with Michael Bay explosions, fun multiplayer and somewhat enjoyable survival, which is a failed attempt to cash out on CoD zombies, and a Spec ops. It just feels like an expansion to MW2, and that's where it fails. It's enjoyable, but feels old.

This game hasn't changed since MW2, all the newbs playing MW3 never even played the classic CODS like MW, WOW, and MW2 (BO doesn't count but its not bad :) ). The only people defending MW3 are those how haven't played the classics and to be a vet you have to play the classics. This game is close quarter combat at its maximum.

If you already own previous games of call of duty, name it MW or BO, this is just another one. It is a successor to the MW story line, gameplay expereince and everything else that was an integral part of the original MW that took everyone by surprise and knocked their socks off. The next game they make, having concluded this trilogy, will be the different, brand spankin' new experience that everyone seems to be craving. But for what it is meant to be, MW3 is bloody brilliant! And It is the familiarity that makes it so, you know what you are getting into, you are already good at it, and with all the new players coming over to the game you will have plenty of noobs to pick on in multiplayer and plenty of veterans to give you a tough time. You can complain all you want, and technically BF3 my even be the better game, but as far as instantly accessible, raucous, addictive, long lasting and uncomplicated joy goes, MW3 and in fact the entire MW series wins hands down. What makes it worth the 60 bucks entry fee is the fact that one year later you will still be playing it, prestiging the hell out of your avatar and getting your adrenaline rush as and when you need it. Add to that an epic story executed like a summer block buster that actually makes you give a damn about the character you are supposed to be even if its so short that it serves primarily as a training camp for your MP exploits is a recipe for success that Activision well know how to whip together. I got the hardened edition and all connectivity issues aside, and despite the fact that theres a boat load of great titles coming out alongside MW3, i know i got my money's worth because this will be the only game i will still be playing next november when another COD game comes out. No offense to anyone, this really is a matter of personal preference but instead of dissing the game try to see it as what it was meant to be. Expand

    What a piece of ****
    It's just a copy Of MW2!
Same graphics, same extremely outdated engine, almost the same multiplayer, short and lame singleplayer.

I think this game is great and adds on what the other games in the series started like a good sequel really should do. I hope that people will stop attacking this game because they are a fan of something else. This game is good and real reviews have been very high for it. so stop trying to keep people away from this fun game.

A good game, I like both the single player and multi player part. If you want more arcade experience than in BF3, this is the game for you. But I think a fan of FPSs should have both games.

I think the main point here would be "why change a winning formula?". Their is clearly a reason that COD is the highest selling gaming franchise in history...because they have perfected what the first person shooter should be. It is hard to believe that this game has gotten so many negative reviews from "fans". If anything, it shows how this BF3 v MW3 has affected peoples judgement. To give a game a 0 or a 1 score means that it is utterly unplayable, so their no excuse for giving this game those scorelines unless A) you have not played it and do not intend to because you are so hung up on BF3 or B) you wish to drive the score down intentionally. Both are inexcusable. It is clear that MW3 is a fantastic piece of software! Universal accliam from critics should tell yo usomething. Agreed, the series could use some freshening up, but to say that it is entirely stale is a gross misstatement. The graphics are fantastic as always, the action is explosive and over the top and will keep you on your seat, and the multiplayer is a real treat. The new survival mode is absolutely brilliant and will be a good alternative to the "zombies mode" of black Ops. Well done Infinity Ward, you made another brilliant one!!! Expand

I really don't see the reason for all the hate for this game except that people are spoiled brats who've been pampered by all the past COD games. If all the haters were to play MW3 for the first time, they would say it's the best fps out there next to Battlefield 3. With an explosive campaign, tight and smooth controls, an addictive co-op/survival mode, and the always satisfying mp, you can't get anything better out there. And yet you have people who have grown tired of the COD formula and can't see through their own fatigue of the gameplay that brought them so much joy over the years and bash on this game like it was pure garbage. Wake up people! Stop for a moment and think about where fps would be like today if COD wasn't a bit hit. What more do you want??? If you don't like the same formula, then go play BF3. Play enough of that, and eventually you'll come back to MW3 with some fresh perspectives. They are both 2 different games that offer different styles and pacing. I personally love them both think of them as the ying and yang of first person military shooters. One cannot succeed without the other. MW3 is the best in the MW series, probably the best in the COD series. And there's simply no other way to describe it. It's fun and if you can enjoy it for what it is, then you'll have a blast playing it, like you all did when you first played MW Expand

I love FIFA and it's a game i always play with friends, but granted they re-vamp the tactics and game engine, all you're paying for it an updated team sheet. As far as the multiplayer goes, yea nothing's changed much....but what was that old saying......"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"? They have around 2 million people playing online at any one time....that is some great statistics and achievement for any gaming company. Look how far we've come from getting all your friends round and playing with just 2 people at a time or 4 if you had the PS1 quad adapter. Be grateful that people can create such high quality products, regardless of the game title. I'm not a CoD fan boy at all, i'm a video gamer and I have more games and consoles than I can name (sad I know), and I probably will be trying BF3....not because I don't enjoy MW3, but because I want to appreciate what other games can offer. I think that's why people are slating this game, not because it's generic and they're used to the story (and admit-tingly it is only a 5 hour campaign), but because people like alternatives and trying new things....hell we'd all be stuck in the stone age if it wasn't for people advancing in their thoughts right? People can hate this review as much as they like, but it's all about personal opinion, and if you don't like the game then that's your opinion of which you are totally entitled to. All i'm saying is don't beat up a game that may have not lived up to the "hype" it was meant to, and what ever console or game you play people are always going to hate, but be happy that games can bring people together online and have something to talk about. Mix in a little Michael Bay and a little Jerry Bruckheimer, and that's an easy formula of fun in a video game in my opinion. People are also saying that MW3 and BF3 won't be as good as SkyRim. The first ten minutes of the game are so incredible and rewarding to anyone who beat the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2 that instantly you will fall back into the role of hunting down the hell bent terrorist leader, Makarov. A short but full filling single player campaign, an entire co-op mode involving 16 hard hitting spec op missions and a leveling up RPG style spec ops "survival mode" along with an amazing multiplayer makes it hard to see what's to could complain about. If you never liked the Call of Duty style shooter than you probably will not enjoy MW3, although I still highly think you should pick it up!

Do not listen to ultra negative user reviewers, almost everyone who would give it a 10 out of 10 are too busy playing the heck out of the game to come on here. If this the example of a "terrible game" I think you had it out to hate this game no matter what. The main complaints are saying the game is rehash. Really? Have you played the amazing games such as Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Metal Gear, Resident Evil and The Legend of Zelda?

Having beat the main story campaign, completed tonight some of the spec op missions with a buddy on veteran and been playing the multiplayer like mad to learn the maps and the way to play the game most effectively--I can easily say--welcome back, Modern Warfare--and also--Makarov, you better be ready--we are all ready for you!

Multiplayer on Modern Warfare 3 will keep you going for years. There are loads of levels, you now have even more reason to spend time on it with leveling up guns to unlock perks, leveling yourself up to unlock guns etc. Plus the killstreaks have been changed so now you have both assault and support killstreaks. Support killstreaks keep track of your kills even after you die, so if your a low level it gives you an opportunity to contribute in someway towards your team.

Spec Ops, and Survival mode also add a lot of replayability to the game, with carefully constructed missions you can play with your friends online or split screen. There are gadgets from Black Ops as well, with the motion sensor and radar jammer. There are also the new EMP grenade and Bouncing Betty's.

This is a FPS, taking place in an imaginary modern day war setting. How many leaps and bounds can you make in this genre? You're going to have repetition in some aspects. There are going to be rehashed assault rifles, SMGs, and sniper rifles. Killstreaks are not new to the franchise either, but the new Strike Package system is a fresh twist.

On top of all of this you still have a campaign, spec-ops, and survival mode. Video games are 60$, that's just how it is. Even terrible games cost $60. Complaining about this much content costing the baseline price for current-gen video games is an invalid argument.

I love BF3, but I consider BF3 and MW3 different kinds of games. BF3 is a total war simulator, MW3 is more like an arcade style fast paced shooter. Both games provide vast amounts of entertainment in their own right. I play both games and I have a blast with both of them. People who dislike this game so much should spend their money elsewhere, and save their breaths.

All the new additions (Gun levels and Kill confirmed mostly in my opinion) makes this games life longer than any of the other call of dutys so far. Fun as hell

I think this game is awesome. It's a perfect sequel to MW2 in campaign and in multiplayer
They've added enough refinements to killstreaks an ranking system. The
Graphics are slightly better in this game, and the gameplay is smooth as
    Always.

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
