Appalled by review scores. Battlefield gets ripped on the fact that they added a singleplayer mode to what is essentially a multiplayer only game, just as an addition to add value to the game, yet Activision gets away with this crap every year. It's all about the money, and they're making a lot of it.

To all other gamers, have "Support" so you can still get killstreaks when the kiddies kill you. Snipers Rifles have no value whatsoever, unless you're an expert 'quik-scoper' as no map allows you the time, space or pace to establish a sniping position. This game is frenetic, chaotic and wholly sub-standard. Like an arcade game, except you don't put coins in a machine, you simply drain your parents' credit card. Simples. A shocking addition to the series. If you're a serious fps gamer looking for a mature warfare game with a brain and a strategic element, then Battlefield 3 is for you. If you want to tear around a map at light speed, judged only on your reflexes, then look no further. This shoddy mess will be right up your street. Expand

The most overhyped piece of trash I've ever played. Every Call of Duty game has been identical since 2007. The developers make very little effort to make the games exciting and this is no exception. If you already have MW2 or any other COD game for that matter, you certainly don't need this. There's absolutely nothing new on offer. Avoid like the plague.

As usual its another DLC and map pack but not only that you go back to lvl 1 you lose the ability to play all your old maps (unless you re buy them again at a later date) and the alternative to battlelog COD elite is PAID instead of free. Why do people keep buying these? Because there friends do why? because they think you will. It's a vicious cycle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Activision have gotten this release badly wrong. A November 7th shipping mandate to UK retailers meant that thousands of pre-order buyers did not get their game on release day. Throw rubbish server performance and this kind of response from loyal customers in to the mix and what you get is something to amounts to the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential back turning for your future pipeline releases.

If I were a fund holder like Davis which holds a goodly amount of ATVI stock I would be taking a serious look at the future of Activision before my investments get burned as badly as this game in these reviews. EA might be a better prospect.

It's easier than ever to quick scope in this game. Way easier than MW2, which to me is just ridiculous. Oh, guess what else? you know how knife lunging was supposed to get fixed? it's not! it's still there and worse than MW2's. Sure there are a few new guns and the strike package system, but that has very little effect on the CORE gameplay. The core gameplay is exactly the same as the last one and the engine they're using is definitely dated compared to all other big releases this year. You instantly feel like you've played this game before. There is nothing fresh or innovative that makes this game feel "new." To me, this is an outrage. I am very disappointed in this title and to me, none of the minor additions to game warrant a $60.00 price tag. Simply because this does not feel like a new game, not in the least. That being said, I've already put this game up on my local craigslist and I'm selling it alongside the preorder poster hoping I will make my money back. If you are looking for a fresh and innovative experience I recommend you pick up something else, as there are plenty of title's who are far more deserving of your hard earned cash. I didn't want to believe it, but now I see what my friends meant when they were telling me Activision is only in it for the profit now. With this game, it's very obvious that they never take user feedback into account. Expand

Multiplayer is obviously why 98% of people buy these games, and alas there is where my complaints are. For one, the maps seem smaller than in previous games and loaded with barriers and objects meant to make you really weave through the map. This creates a very frantic pace for the gameplay and leads to a lot of surprise gunfights and less strategical wars.

Furthermore, my biggest complaint for this game is with the spawn system. I've already been spawned dozens of times IN the middle of the screen of the enemy who just killed me. This leads them, as they're often camping, to kill me instantly before I can even move. I can almost watch myself get killed twice in the replay, it's that ridiculous. They really need to tweak the spawning system in a patch because getting killed upon spawning (which happened to me five times in one nine-minute game) makes you just want to throw down the controller and find something else to do. This has never been a huge problem in the other games in the series, so I don't know why it's so prevalent now.

Stop your Twitter groveling Glen Schofield, your game deserves a "0", MW3 and Activision DESERVE it for disappointing MILLIONS of fans who were devoted countless single-player and multi-player hours into the Modern Warfare series to give us this rushed, tacked-on, copy-cat, sloppy, un-inventive, game that you dare to slap the "Call of Duty" mark on it. A little history about me: I've dropped easily hundreds of hours into MW2 multiplayer until all the hackers, quick-scopers, and all sorts of crap started showing up without a single patch to balance or fix the game and I dropped MW2, ticked beyond belief, and went to Battlefield instead. Black Ops brought me back with innovative and different feel and Zombies zombies zombies.
Now here comes MW3, like your ex-wife/girlfriend who comes back into your life after so many years after your bitter break-up, now all dressed up in sexy clothing and make-up trying to seduce you back...and when you fall for the trap...BAM, you realize you got played...underneath it all you realize that you're dealing with the same BS that made you hate the wench in the first place!! That was the feeling I had when playing my first hours of both Single Player and Multi-Player.
Some Lowpoints, to name a few: Lame single player campaign - "Lets chase Makarov around the globe, again and again storyline", Sequences are all rehash of MW2 sequences: bang bang, kill kill, sneak sneak, cheap deaths, many innocents die but we don't care, rehash AC-130 sequence, run run, someone "important" dies, boo hoo (not really), game over...all in a matter of a handful of hours where you simply...just...don't...care. Multi-Player - Spec Ops, rehash of single player, nuff said. Multi-player - Within THIRTY MINUTES of my experience, I got "quick scoped" over and OVER again!!??? ARRGHH!!! W...T...H!?? The cheap tricks are back!!?? They obviously DID NOT listen to the fans at all = Activision does not care about you. Strike packages are lame, especially the Support package which still REQUIRES kills to "support" your team. Kill streaks happen every 2 seconds with no breathing room. Multi-player maps are about 50% SMALLER in size it seems, where spawn-and-die is the recurring theme. There are no dynamics or good feel about ANY map that I have tried with any game type, and Kill Confirmed is a lame tack-on and forgettable.

In summary, my buddies and I who ran and pwned both MW2 and Black Ops multi-player literally STOPPED playing after just two hours of BS on MW3 multi-player. We all owned BF3 and HANDS-DOWN find that it is a better, more in-depth experience that MW3 would ever HOPE to achieve. So Glen Schofield, you've made half a billion dollars off of your loyal and devoted fans, and yet here on Metacritic your game stands at a lowly 3 score. Take your money and run, Infinity Ward got it right when it left Activision in the first place.

I am glad this game was merely a gift, as I would not spend a single dime on this "Modern Warfare 2.5" as many are calling it. If Activision really wants to make a better call of duty they NEED to change their engine, and NEED to spend more than 1 year developing a game. Most good games are developed over a long period of time, you cant make a game in one night or even one year for the most part. This is more Call of Duty. It's fun to play, is highly polished, and has a ton to chew on. But really it's highly derivative. You should know what to expect at this point.

I am giving the game a 3/10, but that doesn't mean the game is terrible. This is mainly a Multiplayer review as I have yet to play Spec Ops and Campaign. This is mainly a Multiplayer review as I have yet to play Spec Ops and Campaign. The engine that MW2 runs on is re used in this blockbuster sequel that so many fans have anticipated. What this means is that the gameplay is the same, and the graphics are the same. The updates to the game, core gameplay, and networking code are what defines this year's Call of Duty.

What they have updated does make the game play better and encourage teamwork; however, with the core gameplay vastly unchanged, the game still promotes you to play as a lone wolf. The map design is up for debate, but my take on the new maps is that they are great. They flow really well and I never have problems finding enemies and rarely get snuck up on. The main thing they changed to the core gameplay is how strong the weapons are, and how they can be used. The weapons are very strong and this is not a good thing. The more powerful weapons allows anyone who is new to the series to easily get lots of kills, even against veteran players. Shotguns are back to being a primary weapon, and I'm very happy with the decision. The maps allow shotguns, which have also gotten a damage buff, to preform very well and suits anyone who like likes to move around the map often. The networking code that the game runs on isn't very good either. In other game I play, it says I have a perfect connection, but in MW3 I have a horrible connection and it is very hard to find matches despite it being a brand new game. The networking cod the game runs on also causes the hit detection for bullets to be terrible. When you are further away your bullets usually hit an enemy, but when you are at a close to medium-close range, it takes a while for the bullets to hit someone even when aiming down your sights.

The multiplayer overall captures the fun gameplay of MW2, and the new maps make for fast paced and intense matches, but the game does suffer to some problems. The miniscule updates made to the game, core gameplay changes, and networking all make this game feel like an overpriced expansion pack. If you are a person that has played a Call of Duty game before, this game doesn't have much changed and I would recommend buying it used or at a cheaper price. If you are a new player to Call of Duty I would recommend this game, but don't be surprised at the problems the game has. MW3 was supposed to be a blockbuster game, but it only feels like an expansion pack to MW2 that costs too much money and has some problems that shouldn't be there.

Sadly this was just another rehash of the last 2 games; I honestly look forward to when COD can earn my respect back and not just be another Madden. Give us a new engine a good story and stop charging so much for DLC. Also how can I respect a non exclusive franchise that caters to one console over another.

The multiplayer maps are so bad that the ruin the entire game. They are pretty much all identical, they are all small so that means no variety in gameplay people come out of no where. Out of mw1 waw mw2 blackops and mw3 this has by far the worst maps ive ever seen.

I have yet to dip into the campaign but the multiplayer is just an update for MW2. Nothing really new except the maps (which aren't that great) and maybe a few tweeks to the guns. Quickscoping try-hards are back which isn't too surprising since IW caters to YouTube commentators. So dissappointed in this game. I look forward to Treyarchs game since they at least are innovative in their games.

    Short Review...

Spec Ops: With the addition of Survival mode I say that mode alone is a 10/10. It's fun, a lot more interesting than Zombies from the Treyarch Call of Duty games and for when PS3 network is down for maintenance I found it an enjoyable activity to pass time with. Much like multiplayer it has a leveling system. Your waves and cash will reset to zero but as you level you will have more weapons to buy and unlock more maps to play on. It is also great practice for learning the multiplayer maps since they share the same maps. The higher level maps have more difficult waves but over all i still found myself getting far and it was very fun.

Campaign: Nothing new here other then the story itself continues. I'll give it a 7/10 considering they finally got rid of the stupid training mission that started the story out before. The training mission is in spec ops however if you enjoy it for some reason. All call of duty campaigns have amazing presentation but overall it's the same experience to me.

Multiplayer: Nothing changed... bull crap, people are liars. First off a 9/10 for this. First thing I noticed was the lighting and weather effects. It is truly on par with the campaign style presentation. It feels like Battlefield 3's scale with a more user friendly close quarters arena, over all if you don't see the difference you should really go buy or rent the game and stop lying to people. Other than that the rest is the same with exception to weapon leveling which really just makes it easier to unlock attachments, no more of that 20 head shots bull crap with this and that or heart beat sensors kills. With plenty of nice tweaks this game is worth the $60 considering you get 16 maps anyways which Activision would have charged you anyways at $60 based on how they set up their map packs.

    What it needs to improve:
    1) Legacy Maps, all of them, rock band style, you should have learned Activision when the Guitar Hero series had to end. Don't let EA beat you to this because it will probably cut sales by A LOT! If that's to many maps for people create separate play list so that people can decide what they play and only need one disc. Also have a favorites play list where players can vote on all maps and the current top 10 maps will be in the favorites rotation.
    2) Destruction, but in your own unique way. I have Battlefield for destroying entire buildings but it would be cool to be able to create some new cover areas and destroy some camping spots.
    3) Create a Map, this is something I would like to see down the line, Tony Hawks create a skate park was pretty dope, i think we could make some pretty awesome maps with the right tools....

so now my average score is...9, i started off with an 8 but decided to rate each part and came to 9, so I will go with 9 officially. thanks for reading.

Since there was no engine change, the graphics remain pretty much the same as in MW2. The weapons are unbalanced (*cough* UMP *cough*). And ofcourse, you get the insane amount of tent pitchers that only a CoD game can provide (not to mention the boosters). The campaign I did somewhat enjoy, despite the occasional unseen death, or magic phasing of bullets through the enemy. The story wasn't terrible, though, it pretty much plays like every CoD campaign before it. The saving grace of this game is in the co-op mode, which I've actually quite enjoyed. Survival mode can be fun when done with a friend. In conclusion, if you MUST have all CoD games, than go ahead and get this one, otherwise, with Skyrim on the way, and Arkham City and Uncharted 3 already out, and a multiplayer gem like Battlefield 3 out as well, this CoD is skippable. I was hugely unimpressed with MW2 however, although I did sill enjoy the game, I felt it was a huge step back. It didn't breed the competetive nature that COD4 did. There was no balance within the weapons. Using a sniper for example, was almost pointless due to the accuracy of Scar+RDS.

Gimmicky things like scavenger perk & kill streaks made camping the most effective way to play.

However, MW3 was hugely built up - I heard from friends they were going to find a middle-ground between 4 & MW2.

I anticipated this game greatly, a new MW, which would hopefully learn from the mistakes of MW2 and hopefully a game to blow the 2 previous titles out the water.

HOW WRONG I WAS. This game didn't just let me down immensly, I have never felt so ripped off by a product in my life.

I know the gaming industry isn't going to develop a new engine everytime a developer releases a sequel - but as gamers we at least expect some gameplay improvement & new features.

Lazy would be an understatement. The gameplay is EXACTLY, i repeat EXACTLY the same. Most the guns are the same. The maps are new. And they have a new storyline for offline.

And that, i'm afraid is MW3 in a nutshell.

I'm taking it back tomorrow wiith my reciept for a full refund, and activision/IW deserve to be investigated by some sort of watchdog body for this effort.

I think that for the amateur player they should have been made even more easier to obtain. The studios have missed a HUGE trick and not bothering to have the COD $ from Black Ops which allowed players to upgrade weapons and not have to wait.

Overall I'm not sure this is MW3 but MW2.5

Same game being run into the ground. Nothing original. Glad I didn't waste sixty bucks on this crap. And then for activision to announce another CoD for 2012 is just absurd. CoD is going in the same direction as guitar hero.

The cow is dry. The milk has spoiled. Bury this franchise. It's over. Dead. Do the industry a favor and don't support annual rehashes. Activision is killing the industry. Don't settle for mediocrity.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Biggest fan of CoD4 so I was waiting for this game with allot of hope you had learnt some things from MW2. Unfortunantly you haven't, it feels like DLC for MW2.
Everything (even the UI) is the same, I wish instead of trying to cram more stuff in you streamlined things like CoD4 - UAV, airstrike and chopper is all you need. Having other options promotes camping and after a couple days i'm already sick to death of it.

I feel like I was scammed out of $90AUD, had it been a $40 expansion I would not be complaining but I haven't the money to throw away like this. Regret that I did not wait for Skyrim now.

Sorry IW but you have lost a fan.

Funnily enough, I believed the hype from so many others about BF3 and I was bored with it after an hour. Tough to outdo the best BF3 fanboys. Campaign falls way short of the what MW3 delivered. Guess you all have time to sign up and post negative reviews on here because after MW3 got released you have nobody to play with anymore, they are all playing TRULY the better game MODERN WARFARE, where it has gone ABOVE AND BEYOND THE BATTLEFIELD.

Where to start? I have been playing COD since the very first game on PC, and IMO Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is the best COD game in the entire franchise. What happened Infinity Ward? I don't really understand what all the hype is surrounding this game (IMO there are much better ones just released and that are coming out). The single player is poor, multiplayer is more of the same, and SpecOps feels like it was tacked on.....There is just not enough here to justify a $60 game. If it was going for $40, ok....that would change this review a bit. To give Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games credit, they did do a remarkable job with the graphics (this is at least a four year old engine), and you can tell they worked extremely hard to deliver this. Bottom line, buy this, yes or no?: No - Save your money and play COD: Modern Warfare if you need your "war" game fix. Expand

I'm going to be honest with my score.

a 3 deserves its right to be scored this low. For a company that makes MILLIONS of dollars on the COD series, you would think they could and SHOULD invest in dedicated servers to handle all the lagging issues in the game. What fun do people have, if all they do is lag. Or time out. Or can't find matches but end up in some brazilian ranked lobby? What is Activision doing? What will IW/SH do to get this fixed!? I want to play in my timezone damn it! Hit detection is awful. Shot guns are awful. Rubber bullets. Commando. Last stand! Nothing has changed. You guys deserve my 3 score until you fix these issues.

The BF3 fanboys are the one's fueling the war between the two games and dragging MW3 down. The best way to make your game look better is to throw off on the competition. This score is based on 3,000 people, what about the other million that's playing everyday, oh yeah they are too busy playing a good game, MW3, to come here and rate it.

this game is recycled garbage. All sounds like leveling up, gun sounds, explosions, are direct copy paste. Maps are poorly designed. Long corridors, few hiding spots, most cover can be shot through, small maps. corridors make using a shotgun a losing effort. almost no way of getting behind the enemy. And if you do the spawn system makes your efforts useless. Spawns are ridiculous. I mean there's 6 enemies on the map. Are you telling me the game engine can't find a good spot to drop me into? Useless perks like recon. pro perks are easy to unlock because they are useless. Most pro perks have nothing to do with the original perk.
assassin and blind eye are necessary to be "stealth" using two spots that should only use one. stealth is impossible due to skulls showing on the enemy screens giving away my killzone.
players can't Sprint farther than 10 feet. Extreme conditioning barely helps.
sniping has been reduced to a low spread shotgun. Quickscope is effortless. No maps promote actual sniping so no wonder they made Quickscope easy.
worthless unlocks. Your just kidding yourself if you think a gun leveling system adds any replayability.
all guns are overpowered. Making any favorites come down to iron sights and clip size.
singleplayer is short and uninventive. players can't jump on anything. But a little piece of trash on the map can stop you dead in your tracks.

the list goes on. Thanks the heavens I didn't buy into your hype and just rented it. This life lesson only cost me 7 dollars opposed to 60.

take your engine and game and scrap it. Your just beating a dead horse. This won't go on forever. I wonder if gamestop is a partner of yours because they know half of the buyers will trade this in allowing them to actually make a profit off of them.

I am so glad I didn't buy the Hardened version of this game. This game is nothing more than MW2 with an updated cover. They used %95 of Black Ops and threw in a few new gun "skins". If you dont mind paying $60 for a game that came out 2 years ago, fine. Ive already traded my copy back into game stop. Sorry but I'm not going to get suckered into wasting my time.

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.
