SADLY it's because the devs aren't listening to their playerbase and only in it for the money now, everything about MW3 just screams garbage, reused textures, nothing new to the table, simple vanity, and now, an "optional" 15$ / month scheme, sorry, but that amount of content doesnt even get CLOSE to justify a 5$ a month charge, CoD is NOT WoW, anyone that actually pays for this concoction of trash and rejected materials from MW, MW2 , Black ops, and given a "MW3" name, is simply blind and uneducated to the reality that this series needs to die, it COULD have gone peacefully, but the devs are certain to drag the dead horse untill it's bones break, which MW3 will indeed do. Call of Duty is officially dead, RIP. Expand

I dont understand the critics from the major companies....clearly Actavision wrote them a big fat cheque so that they would give it some sort of positive score. This game lacks everything its a COPY PASTA of MW2 what a joke and their charging us full retail price. This game sucks KEEP your money and instead play MW2........ Im going for a refund as we speak.

SO, does this game deserve a 2.8 user score? no. but i can see why a lot of fans are getting tired. this games biggest problem is it is VERY similar to mw2. the character models act and move the same (different clothes i think but maybe not. looks pretty similar), the graphics look exactly the same as far as style and quality (which is good, but its losing its appeal), the levels all look familiar since they use the same textures found in the last 2 mw games. long story short, if your new to the franchise, than this is definitely the most refined game of the entire series. the tweaks they made are actually really good, just not very substantial. if your a long time fan i think your gonna feel like me, which is that i enjoy mw3 but it most definitely lost a lot of its magic that the previous games had. this is most apparent in the single player. its good, but its so over the top action that i really got numb to all the explosions halfway through. still worth playing. the one thing i will not say anything bad about is the coop spec ops mode. thats awesome, and now that they added horde mode its my personal favorite thing about this game. overall a good game, but i think a lot of longtime fans will agree, cod is still fun, but losing its mojo. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a response to people who hated Black Ops. People preferred another MW sequel and they got just that. Why do people think there was going to be some type of breakthrough?? The graphics will always be similar to previous COD games on the PS3. The formula will always be the same. My only beef is that the stealth bomber looks bad and is weak. It is not worth 12 points. All in all it is a great game. It does what it's supposed to do. Don't change anything. People will always buy this because it fun simple and addicting. It is a 9 in my book. Expand

Sound quality is appalling. Game play is ok maps suck and interaction with objects in the map is horrible, when you shoot windows you hear glass break and pieces fly but the windows appearance doesn't change. You cannot climb on half the stuff you could even in mw2, not to mention blackops.. Wish I had listened to the reveiws and saved my $63.

Anyone who bashes Call of Duty is an idiot. Most of you are going way too far into detail about how the whole multiplayer is the same, if you say that, you are retarted. The different soldier types adds an interesting twist making the player have to change his strategy up each wave, unlike zombies where you just ran around the map leading them to a place where you could shoot them all. Let's just be honest, the COD formula is just broken. Activision is just taking the same multiplayer suite and graphics engine and repackageing it with new maps (which aren't even well made). And then there's parts where you walk into a room and the game kicks into slow motion and you clear every enemy out of the room. That's very realilistic. And the edges of your screen turn bloody when you get shot. Wtf? Like that really happens. The unbelieveibly over the top action makes the whole campaign feel like a crappy michael bay film. And multiplayer is just the same as it has been. You can kill people with like 2 bullets. I mastered the game in about 5 minutes. Oh wait but there's new killstreaks. Oooooo. Honestly, I'd recommend a shooter that takes SKILL to play such as halo or battlefield, because you will find NO satisfaction in this game unless you're 8. The reason I decided to write this review was not due to the fact I find the COD experience so repulsive, it's down to the petty developers. Take, for example, the schoolyard insults Infinity Ward was throwing at other game developers over the past few months; and also this recent Twitter post from a Sledgehammer 'P.R.' chap about this very website:
""I don't usually do this but, if u like MW3 go 2 Metacritic.com & help our user score"
Their egos have obviously took a massive hit, but it was this following post which really infuriated me:
"It's suspiciously low. Be honest but help if u agree."
Really? They just can't accept that people don't enjoy the BS they spew over the market every November, anymore. No! It has to be a conspiracy! ... These pretentious, **** untalented d*cks should be banned from copy/pasting COD 4 for profit.

Do not buy this game, you will regret it as you will be wasting hard-earned cash only to give it to the scourge of video game franchises.

    Cheers..

Stop your Twitter groveling Glen Schofield, your game deserves a "0", MW3 and Activision DESERVE it for disappointing MILLIONS of fans who were devoted countless single-player and multi-player hours into the Modern Warfare series to give us this rushed, tacked-on, copy-cat, sloppy, un-inventive, game that you dare to slap the "Call of Duty" mark on it. A little history about me: I've dropped easily hundreds of hours into MW2 multiplayer until all the hackers, quick-scopers, and all sorts of crap started showing up without a single patch to balance or fix the game and I dropped MW2, ticked beyond belief, and went to Battlefield instead. Black Ops brought me back with innovative and different feel and Zombies zombies zombies.
Now here comes MW3, like your ex-wife/girlfriend who comes back into your life after so many years after your bitter break-up, now all dressed up in sexy clothing and make-up trying to seduce you back...and when you fall for the trap...BAM, you realize you got played...underneath it all you realize that you're dealing with the same BS that made you hate the wench in the first place!! That was the feeling I had when playing my first hours of both Single Player and Multi-Player.
Some Lowpoints, to name a few: Lame single player campaign - "Lets chase Makarov around the globe, again and again storyline", Sequences are all rehash of MW2 sequences: bang bang, kill kill, sneak sneak, cheap deaths, many innocents die but we don't care, rehash AC-130 sequence, run run, someone "important" dies, boo hoo (not really), game over...all in a matter of a handful of hours where you simply...just...don't...care. Multi-Player - Spec Ops, rehash of single player, nuff said. Multi-player - Within THIRTY MINUTES of my experience, I got "quick scoped" over and OVER again!!??? ARRGHH!!! W...T...H!?? The cheap tricks are back!!?? They obviously DID NOT listen to the fans at all = Activision does not care about you. Strike packages are lame, especially the Support package which still REQUIRES kills to "support" your team. Kill streaks happen every 2 seconds with no breathing room. Multi-player maps are about 50% SMALLER in size it seems, where spawn-and-die is the recurring theme. There are no dynamics or good feel about ANY map that I have tried with any game type, and Kill Confirmed is a lame tack-on and forgettable.

In summary, my buddies and I who ran and pwned both MW2 and Black Ops multi-player literally STOPPED playing after just two hours of BS on MW3 multi-player. We all owned BF3 and HANDS-DOWN find that it is a better, more in-depth experience that MW3 would ever HOPE to achieve. So Glen Schofield, you've made half a billion dollars off of your loyal and devoted fans, and yet here on Metacritic your game stands at a lowly 3 score. Take your money and run, Infinity Ward got it right when it left Activision in the first place.

The polish is better and the hit markers are more accurate than black ops. I'm not saying it is revolutionary by any means but it has a lot of what I loved about MW2. The game has only been out for a fews weeks so most of you haven't even leveled all of the way up to experience every weapon and no one has had the time to test everything out and find that perfect combination of everything. The game could have been better but I am glad that it wasn't worse. They could have ruined the game by deviating too much from what made the first two games great. So quit complaining. Most of you couldn't have designed a better game and I'm sure most of you are the people I keep having to carry because you go 4 and 15 every match. I held out on purchasing this game for a week. I just had a "bad" feeling about it and watching videos of game footage didn't reveal anything that made it a must have. I finally cracked because II'm going to give my flat out opinion with no agenda in mind. The reviews giving this game under a 3 are unrealistic. On the other hand, the reviews giving this game a 8-10 are just as absurd. I held out on purchasing this game for a week. I just had a "bad" feeling about it and watching videos of game footage didn't reveal anything that made it a must have. I finally cracked because I wanted to play a game with my friends. I haven't finished campaign but I don't have any real complaints other than stories that get a little too ambitious. I really miss the beautiful simplicity and seemingly realistic conflict that COD4 offered. MW3 multiplayer is where this game really shows its true colors. The graphics are on par with the last 3 COD games. Nothing looks any better and it has a cartoonish feel to it that just doesn't seem right. In fact, the entire multiplayer experience feels like a comic book. I can't explain it but it just feels juvenile. Next is the sound. The weapons in this game sound like airsoft or some pop gun battles. Is my weapon suppressed? I can't tell because regardless they all just seem to push air. My Turtle Beaches are useless. This is by far the worst selection of maps I have played in a COD game. The maps are all tiny CQB cluster messes. I love small tight maps but don't prefer it every game. Variety is the spice of life.

From the guns, to killstreaks and other things, I just don't see 2 years worth of work. This is really a rehash of MW2 (and not even an improvement). I didn't think the IW staff reshuffle would have any effect but it seems that it did. I am very disappointed in myself for giving in and purchasing such a mediocre game for COD standards. I feel like I was taken advantage of and payed for a game off of pedigree and bloodline alone. This game is not worthy of the COD name and not worthy to deserve my time or money. This is a prime example of a company pushing mediocre products because they know millions will by it simply because of the name.

At the end of the day I'm going to finish campaign, play a little more MP and probably trade this in. It's a bad nightmare I'm going to try and forget. I'll stick with the games that innovated and set the standard (COD4 and MW2). This is just such a disappointment and I don't know what else to say. Mediocre at best.

Map clutter is also a issue getting caught up on random things in the map. Camping is the worst I have seen in any COD. ALSO you still can not create a clan!!!! elite is garbage.

I see this game for sale USED every where. If you have a chance to rent / or buy used Make sure you want this game.

Have been since 1942 when it all began. HOWEVER: I enjoyed the living hell out of MW2 so much, that I still play it to this day. I jumped on the bandwagon out of curiosity, and what i found was an addicting, edge of your seat multiplayer (at least until the marathon/lightweight/commando/tac-knife combos were being discovered) that had a Michael Bay movie attached to it. (I will not speak of the campaign any further than that.)

Then we got Black Ops, which sucked. Let us not speak of it again.

Now we have this thing. I knew this game was going to be copy/pasted to the extreme, but i was thinking "hey, maybe it'll be GOOD copy-pasta."

I was wrong. When people say "this is the EXACT same thing as MW2," they really aren't joking. The game runs on an engine that is 3 years old with no improvements. It uses the same sound effects, the same models for the weapons, the same friggin font, renamed perks, and the same attachments. This game was LAZILY made. The survival mode feels tacked on and rushed, Zombies has more production value than IW's offering. (and is more fun to boot) The maps are utterly claustrophobic that fit the standard settings of a CoD map (ruined city, dirty place, grey place, brown place, GREYISH BROWN PLACE OF DIRT AND RUBBLE), there is little to no originality in the game, period. The campaign (which throws another big death scene (well, 3) just for the sake of being OSSIM) is utterly uninspired, and feels like a Transformers sequel without the big robots than a true sequel to the superb campaign that COD4 had.

I give it 2 points; NOT because its not better than Battlefield 3, but because its nothing but a cash-in designed to rape your wallets. When a game's executable file says MW2.exe, you know you're doing something wrong.

Also, there is now plenty of reason to prestige like getting 2 hours of double XP or keeping a weapon through your following prestige's. In co-op, spec ops have returned with plenty of missions and now there's survival. Here, you survive endless waves of enemies that get harder and harder. I could except that their might me a few bugs at launch, but this game plays like a pre-alpha. There are severe framerate problems, especially while hosting. Matchmaking doesn't work at all, constantly getting booted from games, or just not being able to connect at all. The worst part, this game comes with Infinity Ward's non-existent support. Robert Bowling won't respond to any tweets about the framerate problems at all. He is pulling a Josh Olin by not acknowledging the framerate problems. I didn't buy a game that I hope might be fixed later. I heard that IW and SHG were begging for positive reviews after they saw the user reviews on Metacritic. What a joke. People are giving negative reviews because the game is flawed and they refuse to acknowledge it. We are just giving honest reviews.

Campaign: Wow, boring. The campaign is just like every other CoD game. Russia is the enemy and you travel to major cities to stop a WMD. After playing the unpredictable campaign of Uncharted 3, MW3's campaign is so predictable that it actually angers me.

Spec Ops: Worthless because of the framerate problems, simply unplayable like multiplayer.

I highly doubt that anyone tested this game on the PS3. Framerate sucks, support sucks, improvements to general gameplay are meaningless because the game doesn't run correctly. Overall, I would have to give this game a 0/10 because there is no option to rate it lower.

Part of that may be my own issue, for having too high of expectations. Part of it may be the hype machine around the game. But I think a lot of it also has to do with the game itself. I buy COD for the multiplayer. I like the single player campaigns, I play them, I enjoy them, but I buy the game for the multiplayer. If the games did not have that component I would not buy them, except maybe in the cheap bins. That being said, the campaign in MW3 is fine... good even. And I had fun playing it. Where the game really falls flat, is in the multiplayer. Specifically, the maps. The maps that are included with the game are terrible, in my opinion. I have no stats to back this up, but in the previous COD games, it seems like the maps were well balanced between interiors and exteriors. I am willing to bet that 80% or more of MW3's maps are exterior/outdoor based. There are a million buildings on the maps... but virtually none of them are accessible. And those that are, are little one or two room structures. In the Wall Street map "Downturn," there is NOTHING beyond a small hallway on the second floor of one of the buildings. On a map that takes place among skyscrapers, you get one hallway on the second floor of one building. This issue is repeated over and over in the game, with many of the maps having buildings that are not accessible, or only accessible is so much as they provide a short hallway to get to the next area of the map. In addition, there are virtually no windows or vantage points on the maps to look out from. In addition, the George Lucas effect seemed to be working its magic on the developers. Virtually every inch of every map is cluttered with... stuff. Barrels, cars, debris, crates, and other random junk. The idea that less is more, was clearly NOT in their minds as they designed these locals. Finally, and in conclusion, the game and the maps for multiplayer seem designed for one style of play, that being "run and gun," which is fine and does not make it a bad game for everyone, but it does make it a bad game for me. The game and maps are not balanced to all types of FPS gamers, especially those like myself that like to take things a little slower and are more methodical. It is disappointing that they took a series that had been really well balanced and shifted it so heavily to one type of gamer. I won't say that I will never buy another COD game again, or anything as hyperbole as that. But I will definitely not blindly pre-order the next COD (and especially the next MW) game as I did with World at War, MW2, Black Ops and MW3. I will wait, maybe see if a friend gets it and try it out before committing to it. And maybe not having a COD game I like this year will give me time to try Battlefield. I did not see the point in buying it since I was getting MW3, but for only $28 to $30 around Thanksgiving, I am willing to give that a try and see if maybe that is a better game for me this year. The multi player has terrible connection and always team me up with people with horrendous connections and rather than the specific player lagging it lags the entire server. The gun upgrade system is ridiculous and with the new maps and corner campers and balcony campers the multi player is frustrating and unrewarding. It seems that those who play the most get the most which isn't really fair, a lot of people don't have time to play 5 hours a day, and don't want to. They need to find a system that rewards everyone rather than the dedicated hardcore. The other feature which is lacking which me and friends enjoyed very much is the option to play against bots in an offline format, this meaning we never play multi player together and therefore play different games. I liked black ops it seemed to have the right format for levelling up, if you didn't want to that was fine, but there was endless scope for upgrading should you want to. There is a reason it has a low score it's a poor game i thought 1 was too high but you can't do halves so i rounded down. Expand

What have they been doing with all the money they have made over the years. I'll even agree with Activision even to keep their game winning formula but give the fans like me better graphics and sound to give me a reason to pay $60 for their game. I don't care what anybody says about graphics and sound, these are helpful in immersing the player in game-play which is fact. Try playing a game with either no graphics or sound and it will suck no matter what video game it is. I use to love MW2 2 years ago but now they are just a cash cow. I would give them a better score if they had a better campaign story land Al like HALO or they improved the graphics and sound to give a better gunfight experience. After a disappointment in world at war I bought modern warfare 2 in high hopes that it would be a worthy sequel, which it kind of was...it added many features tightened the multiplayer and continued the story. I was willing to overlook the fact that it was ALMOST the same game, they were coming dangerously close to over saturating the series. Inevitably this happened a year later with black ops which was pretty much a clone of all that had been done before. After all this nonsense we hoped for a glimmer, modern warfare 3...a game which we all hoped would live up to the legacy. Unfortunately all modern warfare 3 really is is and exact replica of all that made up modern warfare 1 and 2. Nothing truly original was added to the experience. Activision has gotten all kinds of greedy. Forcing out games yearly at a full retail price knowing full well they are selling an unworthy product...not taking into account whether or not the consumer is getting what they paid for. The fact that the fans will buy it is apparently enough to justify tossing together some explosions and new maps and putting a new number on the end. All I ask is why? I am not a fan boy of one gaming device or the other, or one gaming series or another, just someone who doesn't understand why this is not only acceptable to you fans, but you will actually defend the games quality. Nothing is truly different about this game then the other major call of duty releases every year since 2007, nothing was stopping them from releasing small packages, more maps, more modes...nothing. Instead they put together not an inferior product, but a slap in the face. All of this has been done before. I've bought this before. You've bought this before. Before you think of buying this garbage and support these publishers who think it's ok to take advantage of loyal fans...think of what you could do to force them to make a modern warfare game that truly lives up to the standards of todays games. Was this much of a review? Not so much...not a rant either. I just want people to realize that the graphics are outdated, story still generic, game play rough, sound poor, and multiplayer virtually unchanged not because they can't but because they wont. Take a stand. Play your last call of duty if you have to a little longer until they see they can't treat people like dirt anymore. If you read this far I hope you see where I'm coming from and live up to my hopes that we will one day see a modern warfare 4 WORTH praising, not this thrown together mess, thank you. Expand

As far as the single player campaign goes, MW2 left you what can be considered a cliff hanger. continuing the story where it left off was well done by the IW/Sledgehammer staff.

Spec Ops, at least for me, is where it got more interesting. The survival mode proved to be a very fun endeavor for me. That new mode seemed very original to me. Props to IW/Sledgehammer on that.

It's very sad, that people give a developer credit for lazy work. Half of the sounds, equipment, perks, guns, and only one new attachment are in the game. 80% of the killstreaks are the same. And you always the get the felling "I have done this before". Survival is sorry attempted at zombies and fails flat. The same COD formula is use.

I have to admit that i'm fairly disappointed by MW3. Story line seems chaotic and all the missions are too short to have any joy from gameplay :/ in multiplayer besides new maps and few more weapons game doesn't bring anything new... MW3 can be considered as a patch (map and weapon pack) for MW2... and the most important part... its way too expensive!

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.
