The most accurate way I can describe Modern Warfare 3 is "competent, but dull." The game tries very, very hard to be exciting, edgy, and shocking, but it fails on every level. The game tries very, very hard to be exciting, edgy, and shocking, but it fails on every level. While the set pieces are bombastic and loud, they carry no weight and have no emotional attachment to them, making them fall flat. What worsens this problem is that the game has absolutely no sense of pacing whatsoever. My playthrough took exactly 4 hours and 33 minutes and frankly the game would have greatly benefited from some slow moving filler to balance out the explosions. Good pacing requires valleys to go with the peaks, otherwise it all feels like one long, incredibly boring plain, which describes MW3 in a nutshell. There are no moments in the game that get ones blood pumping, no moments that evoke any particular emotion, and the script is bad on top of it. All of this is exasperated by the fact that the graphics and sound design are bad to the point of laughable. The gun models look barely better than some PS2 games, the explosions lack volume, the textures are muddy and low-res, the character models are just bad, no easy way to put it, and worst of all the sound design is compressed and unimpressive. I played on a 5.1 surround sound setup and while games like Killzone push the limits of graphical and audio fidelity and action in the genre, MW3 has felt content to go witht the absolute barest minimum of effort and it shows, and the game suffers because of it. The multiplayer offers no solace either. Simply put this is one of the shallowest, most vapid multiplayer games I have ever played. There is absolutely zero depth to the gameplay and no thought has been put into higher level play tactics, in fact, through its egregious killstreak system it actively discourages higher level techniques and play, and instead works to recreate the constant explosions of the single player game, and everything suffers because of it. Unavoidable deaths are a constant, both from getting hit by overhead killstreaks as soon as you spawn, and then from the laughably bad spawn system that often has players spawning in the middle of groups of enemies giving them free kills. Its broken to the point of worrisome. Did anybody actually play this tripe before release? All of this games depth has been put into the loadout system, which boils down to finding the most overpowered weapon and using that, negating any depth that could have arisen. Since there is no teamwork, no teammate reliance, and no interdependence the game is as shallow online as a teaspoon in death valley. The lack of distinct classes and good team modes really hurts the online's replayability and the hardcore gamer will find its lowering everything to the lowest common denominator nothing short of insulting. This is not a game for you if you like shooters. This is not a game for you if like new things. This is not a game for you if you like innovation. And this is certainly not a game for you if you like balance and good gameplay. This is also not the game for you if you're looking for good graphics, sound, and story. If you want any of those things I suggest getting a better game, like Killzone 3. I cannot recomment MW3 on any level, as if miserably fails on ALL OF THEM. However it gets +2 points on my review for at least working without glitches, bravo sledgehammer, your bugtesters are the most talented people on your staff. Expand

Lots of unfair reviews and ratings. MW3 is a great game with tons of new features. Great multiplayer experience, fun new game modes, point streaks, etc. survival mode is excellent and the single player is a nice wrap up to MW2.

I had a feeling this would happen again after black ops, another 60 dollar map pack. Very disapointed with the "profesional" critics giving this game such high marks. Will not spend any more money on Cod until they finally do some real innovation and not just tweaks.

BLack Ops is like a walk in a park and with the change of a disc you will be thrown into a marathon race, bullets coming from everywhere. There are a few places to hide -to few - u can´t really hide, maybe catch your breath and reload and if you are a camper shoot one or two enemies and that is if your lucky. The n00btube is a bit stronger than in BLOPS but far from annoying, rather perfect for this environment and tempo. The pointstreak system makes ppl finally go for objectives. The reasonable thing to buy for prestigetokens is Custom slots it seems, you have quite the arsenal to begin with and I have already gotten the Scar-L and Spas-12 thrown at me and gotten to choose from a vast amount of streaks once. And I am at lvl 10 now.

Dunno what else to say, I am really happy I went with this one (cause I had my doubts about repeating the same old formula again). I hope I will still be at lvl 80. But so far this looks good - almost too good.

Looks like the lost of the original staff of Infinity Ward was a devastating blow to the series. Battlefield 3 is a lot more intriguing and refreshing. It feels like the same old game as in the previous series. When you play this it is like Déjà vu. The hype does not live up to the game-play.

I'm just a bit disappointed with the lack of 'smarts' which could have been built into the range of gaming options. Multiplayer is great - always is. Special Ops is great. Single Player is great. But why oh why didn't they include some more tactical features from Black Ops!?

e.g.1. There's no 'Combat Training' or 'Private / Multiplayer' like in Black Ops - where you just invite a few of your mates and play an on-line level, in an on-line environment, but just against a dozen or so bots. This scenario lends it self so easily to players making their own custom games with their mates - you can take it seriously or stuff around by only playing with pistols for example - just for nothing more than a laugh.

e.g.2 In the Special Ops - they could have easily extended the number of players to 4 (or 6) where you can invite more than one friend to play Survival mode with. They should have. Again, like Zombie mode in Black Ops. It makes for a very fun night when you just grab a couple of mates & play strategically in the Survival / Wave modes of Special Ops.

Both of those examples could have added a LOT of flexibility to the times when you don't want to play on-line with (let's face it, you do get them...) idiots abusing each other from around the world. Thus, increasing enjoyment.

Why they didn't include these as playable options is beyond me. And, a bit of disappointment really at how easy that would have been to implement compared with the rest of the game.

That's why I'm giving a low score - the game runs very well and has plenty of good features. But it's simply not as versatile at it could and should have been.

Activision & Infinity Award; if you read this then take note and see if you can add it as an upgrade, or include this in your next MW5....

And for the record, yes I have half a dozen mates who think the same thing.... so I know I'm not alone in writing this.

This is just a reskin of Modern Warfare 2, you're better off sticking with the second one. It lacks any shred of innovation over previous games and even though they reused 90% of the content from the last game they didn't make any effort to add more content like a longer single player or more multiplayer maps.

The gun selection is the same. A gun added here and there but nothing major like a complete weapon overhaul. I must say I like the new option you have online as far as the way you customize classes. I must say my review is geared my toward users looking to play online as I do not play this game in campain mode so my review is 85% online play. There are a few new death streaks which are pretty neat, and also killstreak rewards. Prestige is now level 80 so that's the highest yet of a COD game so far I believe. Modern Warfare was 55 I believe. While this game's campaign isn't the worst thing I've ever played, it left a lot to be desired. The final level was nice, but where was the action through the rest of the game? Black Ops tried and failed to have a story, whereas MW3 barely has a story or key moments. I can only think of three notable moments in the game, two if I don't count the last minutes. But no one plays Call of Duty for the campaign. I can't believe that I'm about to write this, but here goes; the multiplayer is worse than the campaign. Let that sink in for a second. You can tell that they didn't try too hard with this game by looking at the plain box design, but they made next to no effort for the multiplayer. Weapon leveling is a nice touch, but it's heavily marred by an overabundance of full-auto rifles and crowded maps. Every level that I've played so far has nothing but blown-up cars, alleyways, and more blown-up cars. Does anyone have good memories about Karachi or Rundown on Modern Warfare 2? That is a preview of every level on MW3.
The campaign is a non-event, Special Ops mode seems better this time around (and anything is better than zombies) but it still isn't very fun, and the multiplayer is drowning in its own flaws. Why don't grenades have explosions more than one foot in MP? Why do shotguns have the range of a rubber band? What is the point of perks if they don't seem to help out that much? And most importantly, why doesn't my trained marine know how to reload a gun without it becoming an eight hour affair? I always equip sleight of hand, but then I am behind because someone might have a "better" perk equipped in that slot. The perks that give you faster aiming and better movement speed while aiming aren't even noticeable. Maybe I need to upgrade them to the pro versions, but why do I have to work that hard for something I all ready worked for?
In the end, the Professional reviewers have been paid off or are scared to give this game a low score, lest they suffer backlash from fans. Many of the negative reviewers just plain hate CoD or are players of Battlefield 3 (I haven't played BF3, but I'm tired of hearing about the MW3 vs. BF3 debate). I enjoyed Modern Warfare 2's campaign when you controlled the vehicles or did something that was over the top. I still love to play World at War because it takes skill instead of higher levels. I also had fun with Black Ops before they released patches that made my favorite weapons next to useless but still kept the Famas over-powered. I'm saddened by what has happened to the CoDs, and I know this will be the last time they sucker me. It's a money-making machine and Activision has realized this.Someone might argue "maybe it's not easy to make a great game that quickly". Then Activision should wait longer than 355 days to make their next game, or use some of their budget on a script or ask people what they want changed or added. Maybe if it didn't make so much money it could go back to its roots, but until then, I'm done.

My main annoyance is the awful connections. There's times that I go thru 5-8 pre-game lobbys and just get kicked out just as I believe the round is about to start, uurrrggggg. I've also noticed during Multi-Player if it's all good and you decide to back out of a pre-game lobby it will be hard to get back into a game without having to backup all the way to the Main Menu. Also, the whole ELITE no/poor connectivity thing is truly disgracefull the way you expect the public to "Pay and Not Play" just distasteful. If your a MW2 fan then it's playable at times but I'll second guess putting away Black Ops & MW2 in storage. #YeeHaww @MrYaww Expand

Terrible, terrible game. What more is there too say? Most of these reviews hit the nail right on the head when it comes to explaining why it has such a low User Score. So I am not going to bother repeating what's been said. I'm going back to BF3 and will stay there till Infinity Wart learns the definitions of the words ''Innovation" and "Upgrade.'' That is all.

A cheap copy, paste job. If you love Mw2 stick to that. It's not worth $60 for this steamy, pile hunk of garbage.
The campaign is what you expect from any Call of duty game...boring. Spec ops and Survival are pretty decent but it's nothing really spectacular, Zombies in Black ops & World at War are better.

    (PS3 Version)
The game has everything I wanted it to; an awesome multiplayer experience, a co-op mode that has been improved in many ways from MW2, and a campaign mode full of the nonstop action set pieces we've come to expect from the series. Perhaps the best part is that all of this plays out at a smooth 60fps with crisp graphics- something I found lacking in the PS3 version of BF3.

Perhaps the best part is that all of this plays out at a smooth 60fps with crisp graphics- something I found lacking in the PS3 version of BF3.

Multiplayer has been tweaked since the last game and is just as good as ever. It is not a complete reinvention of the series, but to be honest that isn't at all necessary when it plays this well. The perk system will have its fans and detractors; personally I like it however sometimes I do wonder if it rewards people that have invested time into the game slightly too much over someone who has just started playing. This is due to everything leveling up over time including weapons, weapon modifiers, perks, equipment ect. On the flip side it keeps you playing and it is not a requirement to prestiege once everything has been unlocked.

Spec Ops is back once again and the new wave mode in the form of Spec ops survival, alongside missions that can be played both Co-Op and solo make this an awesome part of the game. I found that some of the missions were changed when I played them solo which was good as there are now leader-boards that allow you to track just how well you are doing vs the rest of the world.

Campaign won't give any real surprises gameplay-wise if you have played a previous entry in the series, however as with the multiplayer mode why fix it if it ain't broke! The levels are quite engaging and I felt the characters had a little more to them this time around when compared with MW2. The inclusion of a few new weapons and some cool set pieces meant that I was happy to play through this to the end.

Overall an amazing game that is easily worth your money!

After buying BF3 a week ago I can see how the games are both very different, however I can't see why there is a need for BF3 fans to rant about how MW3 is a bad game. Both have areas where they excel over the other however in my personal opinion MW3's 60fps smooth gameplay, better visuals, inclusion of split screen co-op and online multiplayer, and survival mode are just some of the reasons I prefer it over BF3. I find the lack of vehicles to be a good thing and as someone that is not part of a large clan, the team based structure of BF3 can sometimes get annoying when I am matched with a bunch of Noobs against a clan of Vets. To everyone that has given this game a rating of 0..grow up, you may not like it but to deserve a 0 a game would have to be literally unplayable! rating a game out of 10 does not mean "Give 10 for good or 0 for not good"! In reality I would give this a 10 and BF3 an 8 (On PS3 as I believe BF3 performs slightly better on PC and could get more).

Re-packing a small MW2 DLC map pack and charging $60 is just crazy. The game is very linear, and there's not much challenge/strategy. You follow the white dot from point to point. I was hoping for some innovation and new features, but found neither.

MW3 is a carbon copy of MW2. FACT! The guns are mediocre at best. The lag is atrocious. The maps are a similar layout to MW2 (In fact its just like a $60 map-pack) And..worst of all....Activisions laziness is evident in everything from the fonts to the trademark chickens they have clucking around the place. I'd say they didn't have to do a tap of work on this product 'coz its all the same!!!

Then there's the positive reviews...they elude me completely!!! I have no clue how a trusted reviewer could recommend you spend your hard-earned-cash on something so substandard. This leads me to the conclusion that brown envelopes must be involved.

Then you have Glen Schoefield BEGGING...that's right...BEGGING (google it) players to give it a good review on metacritic...and that just annoys me so much more!!! Begging us to make them more money when it clearly is...NOT...DESERVED.

On an finishing note...I honestly hope the world learns from this disgrace. And going by user reviews the world over.....it looks like the COD fanbase is already falling apart. Enjoy my $60, Activision. I hope you buy yourself something nice.

We'll see.. when I started playing just after the midnight release, there were a few connection issues, but they were intermittent and made me have to click find match a couple of extra times. I would not be surprised if the proceeds for this game are going to the legal team that is being built to attack the creators of the Call of duty franchise Jason West and Vincent Zampella. I am sure that Robert Kotick is rolling in my money right now laughing to himself. But now on to the game am I supposed to be to amazed by. There is an argument in the gaming world if Battlefeild or Modern Warfare 3 will beat out the other in the long run. From what I have played of both of them; I would like it if a third party came along and destroyed them both. What ever that means I don't know. Graphics: I can't complain. Some very stunning moments, but I did get some strange texture pops.
Design: The reason I am giving this game a 4 is because at least there are somethings that do work. The twitch gameplay is what we've all come to expect from this developing company. Level Design: Signle player linear and boring. This is ridiculous, I just feel like I am being led by the hand and shown all the same enemy over an over. Multiplayer level Design: Are you kidding me. The release maps are all basic grid based square maps with some objects to provide minimal cover. There is something about all the maps that feel like claustrophobic hallways. Even the "open air" sniping maps seem small and cramped. Why can you not jump up on boxes that are knee height, but dumpster can be mounted easily?
Controls: Nothing to complain about here. Sound: Nothing to complain about here.

Conclusion: Next time when the hype is such that a company will spend good money two months before to promote the next "big" game. I will think twice. I think that consumers were thinking that this game was going to be some "new" an "amazing" experience that would keep there hopes up about the business. Unfortunately this game does not seem "new" the aspect of "amazing" seems to be some where in the past successes of this pony. Nostalgia is a good selling point.

$60 dollars for a map pack, a 3 hour campaign and for hundreds of 12 year olds to tell me a lot of things I didn't know about my mom. I can't believe this game still makes money. It's sad excuse for a game.

Selling this game for anything more than $20 should be a federal crime. The people in charge at Sledgehammer, IW, and Activision should all be placed under citizens arrest for releasing this recycled piece of garbage and labeling it as a new title.

Why is this game **** on the ps3? Graphics are not as good as the 360. The developers never talk about ps3 and they didn't let us install to hard drive so textures stream 2-3 secs slower giving a blurry image. BF3 has a new engine and dedicated servers where as mw3 is still tweaking cod4 engine.

MW3 is awesome, and very enjoyable. The campaign wraps up the story nicely, and the multiplayer is still as enjoyable as ever.

Game sucks, nothing new, expected more, game is overated. Read the user reviews, not the reviews that Activision had paid to give them. For the amount of money they get from custumers from the game, map packs and elite, they should have given us a better game.

CoD makers played it too safe and retained the same gameplay. Which is good, but we are shelling out $60 for a new game, not an expensive map pack. My only gripe is the graphics seem to be worse than they were in MW2. What's up with that?!?

Best overall call of duty yet, online is great as well as the offline. Only complaint is that online maps are a bit small even in comapirson to others in the series.

Another huge problem is the matching system (if you can actually get into a game 1 out of 5 tries usually) which still (most all CoD titles) lags for all players and punishes the host 100% of the time. Finally it has lots of maps but they are all very small. Horribly small actually. All-in-all I had more fun, longer games, better games, and almost no lag playing BF3. MW3 is just a rehash and while it's pretty and has a few new things...it's just lacking a few major items that are unfortunately required to play and enjoy the game. Things like not spawning all over and being killed the second you do or things like actually being able to get in a game. If you're going to spend $60 and given the economy...I highly recommend BF3 over MW3. Expand

There is nothing to say about this game and that's the main problem I have, it's been 5 years since the fourth entry in the series made its way to the seventh generation of consoles, and nothing but a dated engine with the same gameplay mechanics that have been recycled over the years make up for a good game in 2011.

In conclusion, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is just another COD game that will have a one year life spam. All it's glory will be forgotten when the next entry will form part of the COD family, sadly this isn't good for gaming, and as a gamer myself I have to give what think this game deserves.

If you're into same **** just done with less quality, COD MW3 is for you. As far as I'm concerned, it's not worthy of it's price tag as it's a lesser game than it's two year old predecessor. P.S. Same game, different name... the maps on this game have taken a step backwards. To be honest, the maps on all call of duty games have been decreasing in quality since MW2. This game is definitely oriented toward a run and gun style. There is little resemblance to any form of actual military strategies. In short, save your money and play Black Ops because that is this game...

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.
