Yea, this game is similar to MW 2, but if it aint broke, don't fix it. Any educated consumer knew what they were getting when they bought this game. No one claimed that this was going to be a completely new experience. I enjoyed the single player campaign because it is fast paced, frantic and fun. I 'm smart enough to understand the crazy story, making it more enjoyable. As far asYea, this game is similar to MW 2, but if it aint broke, don't fix it. As far as multiplayer, I feel that they have made improvements over MW 2. Strike packages force you to think about your tactics, weapons feel good, hit boxes seem to have been tightened up, and the weapon rank system is a nice change of pace. Yea, some of the kill streaks are the same, and some of the weapons are the same, but what's wrong with that? This game sold 6.5 million copies in the US and UK on launch day, so it must not be too bad. Expand

All the negative spam is pretty unfair. If Battlefield didn't exist this would be far and away the best FPS period. But it's not. MW, MW2, and now MW3 are all very similar, as a matter of fact, if MW3 had just been DLC it would be considered the greatest DLC pack EVER.

I'm one of those people that enjoyed BlackOps and the customizations, unlocks etc. At first glance you seem to have a lot of options in terms of what can be done with each individual weapon once leveled up, the different perks, kill streaks and specializations - but it lacks the same cohesion as BOPS. I found the maps to be lackluster with no stand-out favourites. They all seem to be generally packed too tight and the ebb and flow of games is too sporadic. Guns don't seem entirely balanced and the pace/style of place doesn't suit most of them. If it's going to be primarily SMG type weapons being used, include more of them. Expand

I asked my brother why he was trading in Battlefield 3 for Modern Warfare 3, and I told him it would just be more of MW2. He said that's what he wants...
And that's exactly what he got! I have played my fair share of CoD, and from the moment I saw the identical HUD on MW3, I sighed. This game is the exact same as its predecessor, and yet it will be the highest purchased game of the year.

The guns are indifferent, i enjoy the SMG and Assault classes, but almost always have kick on the weapon to help me aim. In reality, weren't we expecting it to be a bit like MW2? And i think theyve found the right balance between COD4 and MW2, with some old school aspects and less annoyances like Quickscoping. The team aspect of the game has kept me hooked, and although I find it ridiculous that they can charge £34.99 for a few extra maps and stats, I have been more than impressed with the Sledgehammer effort. They only support up to 16 players and still cant keep lag and connection problems down. After 5 hours of play I see constant Host migration pauses and occassional network lag. This is on an overclocked quad core machine with a gtx460 card and running on FIOS.
Battlefield on the other hand is the opposite. They actually took the suggestons of the COD community and implemented them. Full browsing with ranked dedicated servers and up to 64 players in a game. The max I've been in was a 32 player game and lag wasn't there and none of the Console game host migration BS.
The graphics are also a big disappointment. They are once again the quality of XBOX and nowhere near what they should be on a higher end machine. Even the sounds are scrrewy. The guns are muffled like some liberal teacher made them, not wanting to expose people to the correct sounds of war. All I can say is give BF3 a try. Besides the vehicles you'll think you're playing the game you thought MW3 would be.

I don't know how "Activision" can launch this kind of games. Call of duty: MW3 is the same game that MW2; the same graphics, weapons and the same strategy.
MW3 is not a emulator of the real live but a simple arcade.

Modern Warfare 3 is little more than another $59.99 map pack for Call of Duty 4. It's really time that Activision did more than just employing 2 game developers to move building around on maps, change some textures and some minor tweaking of features and then calling it a new game. So lame.

As a gamer and a consumer, I've come to expect quite substantial improvements in sequels to previous games, especially sequels to successful hits.
All of the sequels this year (Uncharted, Gears of War, Resistance, Killzone, Batman, Dark Souls, Skyrim, + MANY others) have at least attempted, and in most cases succeeded, in upping the quality of various aspects of their game.
What about MW3 then? Zero, nada, zilch! Same graphics engine, same physics, same poor lighting effects. This stuff was barely good-looking in 2009's MW2, let alone now where other games have caught up SO MUCH.
I don't play BF3, but cannot deny how amazing it looks. Uncharted 3 even refined its graphics over the previous one. Batman Arkham City made an environment that is so huge it will take you weeks to cover. MW3? Another 5 hour campaign with piss-poor visuals and same old gameplay.

And while it's fair to say that the CoD formula is what we should expect for each new instalment, I don't expect to find the SAME BUGS THAT WERE PRESENT IN 2007 FOR MW1!!! Seriously, 4 years and 4 CoD games with the same bugs, same AI issues, same graphics, same sounds. If the "CoD formula was PERFECT", then they could re-release the sahem thing. It's not!

I'm selling mine without even finishing the campaign....

For $60 two years after the release of MW2 you should be getting way more advanced graphics or better engine.

Anyways, by itself it's a great game. Compared to it's predecessors, it's a minimum upgrade.

And here's MW3, the story is even more convoluted, and while the action is as always blisteringly intense, without any kind of story that makes us care about who these characters are and why they are doing what they do, it feel shallow and empty and I struggled to find the energy to fight through the waves of enemies. The game is linear and while I accept that a lot of great games are heading down this linear route, the difference is that in a good game the story drives the game along, it's part of the set pieces and both co-exist. MW3 is basically set pieces interrupted by action film clichés and drivel. The multiplayer is as frantic and fun as ever and while this is the games saving grace, it's not enough to erase the disappointing single player from my memory.

Wait for the price to drop or buy it second hand for the multiplayer portion (who'd have though Activision would not take the now popular "on-line pass" money spinner)

These three games, even if they have not been elected the best games of the year were very well received by players. Why? Ben by what these games are really good.

Great game. Anyone complaining about hit detection or lagging servers should upgrade their dial up internet. I'm not sure what people hope to achieve with a direct sequal, it's still modern warfare how much do people actually think guns have changed in the past two years. highly recommend to anyone who isn't using ancient internet.

Absolutely disappointed in this game. It is nothing but a recycled game with the same stuff from mw2. Its amazing that activision continues to rob people of their money by creating the exact same crap and charging people 65 dollars. MW3 is basically mw2.5. I heard about the incredibly unbalanced user score that MW3 has received on Metacritic from IGN, and decided to create a Metacritic account just to give an unbiased and objective review and score. And to help even out this Very low score for an obviously above average game, I mean sure MW3 is not perfect but 3.1 out of ten is bull***t. First off I would like to state that I am not a COD Fan Boy and not a little kid, I'm a hardcore gamer that has been playing games since the early nineties. I play all manner of games on PC and PS3 and have also bought MW3's main competitor BF3. I have played about 30 hours on BF3's Multiplayer and have a 3.30 Kill/Death Ratio so am no noob when it comes to FPS. Even so I was disappointed with the overall products of both Battlefied 3 (which got boring faster than expected) and MW3. In the end I scored MW3 8 out of 10. It is very similar to MW2 but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The Singleplayer was OK, similar to the last two Modern Warfare's (overall uneventfull and boring with only some good bits) Spec Ops Missions are fun and exciting, especially if you have a friend to play them with and Spec Ops New Survival Mode is great addictive fun and a good addition to the series, I would say, and this is just my opinion that this is better than Zombies (playing with a mic is essential). Than you have Multiplayer which love it or hate it is pretty much the same as MW2 but with Strike Pakages, different killstreaks and different variations on old perks, some new guns and some new maps and game modes. Noob tubing, Nuke Killstreak and One Man Army Perk are gone but Quikscoping and Drop Shoting are still the order of the day. Also Spawn Deaths, Hit Detaction and Lag Issues can become a bit annoying. But with a half Decent Connection, a bit of skill and a touch of class you should be able to overcome these shotcomings to have one of the sweetest FPS Online Gaming experiences you can have at this time. I won't lie somtimes the multiplayer can have you screaming at the TV about the injustice of the last 5 Cheap deaths that made no sense whatsoever. But with a bit of patience even without the Elite Functions you get to know the layout of the maps, the spawn points, choke points, best class layouts for specific situations and maps. You will receive better weapons and figure out which strike package work best for you, and then your experience will start getting better. And to everyone saying COD is unbalanced that's BS, because there is a strategy and counter for everything your adversaries can throw at you. So after everything is said and done what it really comes down to is skill (and who has more of it). Overall, taken all the features packed into this one game and the weeks and possibly months of enjoyment that can be had, it's impossible for me to see how this game can receive a score below an 8 let alone a 5. If your a fan of FPS or games in general this a great addition to your game collection. Definately not MW2 DLC, and for only $50 to $100 are you that poor/cheap to complain about purchasing a great game and depriving yourself of fun just because a bunch of pathetic PC BF3 Fanboy Sheep/Followers decided to flood this site with negative reviews. It's Up To You.â Expand

What I would say is that what people have to remember is that the current iteration of this franchise is nothing more than a corporate cash cow. It was the first game to raise the RRP of a videogame to £55 and now with this version Activision are also flogging a £35 subscription (annual) on top of that.

There is also the argument of rehashing the same game - and I think you cannot compare this game to sports franchises... because at the end of the day the parameters of a sports game are finite - you can't suddenly start putting anti-grav on a football, etc. but with something like this - where you are only restricted by the minds of the designers and their creativity... this version is just like McDonald's creating one of their "Tastes of America" - it's got a slightly different sauce on it, but essentially it's the same grey, tasteless meat inside...

I've played all of these and the problem is the quality isn't that good... floaty mechanics, pea-shooter effects and a really old graphics engine - who cares if it's running in 60FPS if it looks like an original Xbox or PS2 game?

The problem is that the hatred isn't just for the game, but for the treatment of gamers by Activision - and of course their vision of what a game should be... it's no longer about the enjoyment of the audience or the creativity of the designer, it's about milking the market for as much as they can... and don't get me started on their charge for playing online if you buy one of their games second hand as well as their grotesquely over-priced maps popping up every other month (about £10 each for usually 3 or 4 maps that have featured in old games).... and before you say you don't have to buy them - in order to play online with friends and get maximum chance of joining a match - they pretty much make it essential.

At some point we (including the press) have to say enough is enough. We're not just here to be milked for cash - £55 for the game, £35 for subscription, £10 a time for maps, £10 if you want to play it online, etc. etc. and all for the privilege of playing the same game remixed... is it worth 5 stars? Really?

I'm not sure if it's just me or anyone is feeling how slow the character runs even with "Extreme Conditioning" active- I find my thumb aching from pressing too hard as a habit to make him run faster, highly annoying. The single game seems to be interesting albeit the same dream it seems I had in MW2 where you get babied along the missions. I wish the game was faster, more creative, and had more interaction with your surrounding on multiplayer. It also seems too "cartoonish" like Black Ops, not realistic like MW2.
The Pros: You get to vote on which board to play next which is a cool concept on multiplayer, The Vault allows you to look at how you did on multiplayer gameplay. There are new games to play like Kill Confirmed that add a new dimension.

This hasn't hurt CoD in the slightest, and MW3 is going to be a huge hit. And it deserves to. Sure, battlefield 3 is prettier, but it comes nowhere close to the pure FPS mastery that makes CoD such a juggernaut. The campaign far surpasses the vaguely interesting BF3 campaign and, thankfully, blows the stupid and confusing MW2 campaign out of the water, surpassing the surprisingly strong Black Ops to fall, imo, just short of the first Modern Warfare and Bioshock as the best FPS i've played. The scale is bigger, and while that's not always better, MW3 thankfully avoids a michael bay feel while still having over-the-top set pieces around the globe in the throes of WWIII. But nobody gives two **** about single player except for me, so multiplayer: its pretty **** good. they've made some changes, and while it doesn't seem to be enough for many people, i really don't see much point in ignoring what's widely considered to be one of the best multiplayer experiences ever and trying to reinvent the wheel for the sequel. spec ops, which i've just barely played, is also a ton of fun. Bottom line: haters gonna hate. But MW3, even with all the hype surrounding it, is a fantastic game and completely worth the money. Yes, it runs on an old engine. Yes, the multiplayer feels very similar to MW2. But if you can get over these two flaws (and one of them isn't really even a flaw, seeing as people still play MW2's multiplayer today), then you will be rewarded with a very, very good game. Expand

To the people wondering if Modern Warfare 3 would take a hit due to the 40+ staff of Infinity Award leaving, look no further. The answer sadly, is yes. It has taken a huge hit. Unfortunate to say MW3 is nowhere near as good as the previous games in terms of multiplayer, with the major drawback being the map design. With 16 maps included on the disc you'd think there would be atleast a dozen of good quality maps, instead you're met with 16 small, maze ridden maps that have no flow whatsoever. In my opinion there are about 3-5 bearable maps, the rest are so poor even the maps from Black Ops outshine. I seriously think when the **** hit the fan at IW all the map designers left because the 16 on offer are truly awful. Pretty much all buildings are locked out and everything is basically flat, there are no areas to cover your six and it's completely geared toward the Rambo COD gamers that run around like blue arsed flies shooting and running constantly. It is a severe disappointment,. I was expecting this game to not match the quality of the previous two games but even then I was still majorly let down. This is the worst COD MP I have ever played, and that includes COD2, COD4, W@W, MW2 & Black Ops. This is a completely truthful opinion from a big fan of the series, unfortunately it seems that it is now time to leave it for dead (or atleast go back to the awesome MW2). Seriously, the maps are truly awful. I am selling this game as soon as I have finished the campaign Expand

Worst purchase this year. Reused assets everywhere. They aren't even trying anymore. It's been obvious for a while that this franchise is going downhill fast.

This game is just more of the same. I couldn't stand the singleplayer. It's like I had already played everything in there before and they ran out of ideas (shocking right?) and they even took the idea of the no gravity section from Killzone 3. Go buy Uncharted 3 instead of this steaming pile of dog dump.

The developers completely **** this game up. The map design is horrendous, I can't walk around a corner without getting shot because there are too many places the enemy can come from. I averaged a K.D of over 2 in the past two Call of Duties is this has nothing to do with my skill level. I experienced more anger and frustration playing this game than joy. The developers have taken the need for skill out of the game. If they did a patch to add recoil on the guns, add health and delete the new maps and just put COD 4 maps on then the game would be fine. **** it, lets all just play COD 4 again because that game was perfect. Thanks Activision. I'm highly enjoying my $60 dlc for MW2. What gives? All of my prestige's are gone! Now how will I spawn camp all the 12 year old kids who got there parents to wait in line for there new map packs?

Call of Duty 4.3 is pretty damn disappointing. The swiss cheese plot is cliché, and the multiplayer is copy-pasted. It's obvious Activision is just using Call of Duty as a cash cow now. To think that millions bought this game and millions more will feed money to a greedy publisher through CoD Elite and endless DLC hints at a dark future for the gaming industry.
    I just don't

I just don't understand how people can willingly waste their money on this.

I gave this game a 5 because it's more of the same. Same dated engine. Few refinements. If you played Mw2 your not missing much besides the story which in my opinion is it's strongest point.

I'm someone who craves innovation, and if your like me, look elsewhere.

For the hardcore Cod Fans that like Stale and Repetitive gameplay, than pick this one up.

MW3 might be more of the same with minor improvements over MW2, but it doesn't deserve this low of a score. If anything BLOPS deserves this score for being such a piece of ...

While most are playing MP, the SP campaign is probably my favorite of the series.

Amazing that people think the low user score is down to BF3 trolls. I bought MW3 for £40 and it is essentially a frickin' map pack. I could forgive the fact they're still using the dated IW engine if this was brimming with new features and innovations, but this is just a shocking effort - go back to the drawing board already.

This game is currently receiving a lot of zero scores which may seem unfair, but I believe in this case it is actually justified. This review is obviously focusing on the multiplayer aspect since the single player campaign is barely worth mentioning. Anyone who has played the previous games should know exactly what they are in for, only with even more over the top setpieces and storytelling. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was at the time the greatest first person shooter I had every played, but as demonstrated by the reviews on this website people are finally getting sick of paying for the same game every year, and this may well be the beginning of the end for the Call of Duty series unless the next game is markedly improved. I wasn't even going to give a review (because it's all been said here many times already) until I saw the tweet from one of the dev's asking for us to give mw3 a positive review. There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.
