Other than adding a Kill Confirm mode in multiplayer there isn't anything new here. You already know there will be a tired and stale sneaking mission, a top down black and white shoot tiny people from an airplane mission, some slow motion sections, an underwater part etc etc. The whole game looks like someone is just throwing fireworks in your face to distract from the fact that there isn't anything you haven't already played going on. The leveling progression is way too high in multiplayer too. In one match I went up three levels. You don't get the sense that you earned the level you are at. I rented this and glad I didn't spend 60 dollars owning it. I honestly tried to give this game a chance and I am a fan of the series but this game tried to pull the wool over my eyes by giving me the exact same game again that I've already played several times over. Here's a simple comparison -At least from Mario Bros 1 to 3 you got a racoon suit! I am happy though to wrap up this convoluted story arc that the game has been shoveling for three games now. Expand

If they actually improved anything gameplay, graphics, or even sound-wise they would make a really better game, but all they've done is re-write a predictable story, and re-use the same game but slap a 3 on the end instead of the 2.

They should of took a page out of 343 studios book n found out if u remake the same game it shouldn't cost the full retail cost
Probably the most un innovative call of duty yet, can't wait till the next ;) At least

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Activision have gotten this release badly wrong. A November 7th shipping mandate to UK retailers meant that thousands of pre-order buyers did not get their game on release day. Throw rubbish server performance and this kind of response from loyal customers in to the mix and what you get is something to amounts to the tip of the iceberg in terms of potential back turning for your future pipeline releases.

If I were a fund holder like Davis which holds a goodly amount of ATVI stock I would be taking a serious look at the future of Activision before my investments get burned as badly as this game in these reviews. EA might be a better prospect.

This is MW2 with revamped maps, looks more like a DLC than a new game. Infinity Ward you failed on this one. Once again laggy servers plaque the Call of Duty game and I can't believe they have been using the same engine for 6 years, time for a change. I gave it one last shot at Call of Duty but I'm done with this franchise and happy playing my Battlefield 3.

Another huge problem is the matching system (if you can actually get into a game 1 out of 5 tries usually) which still (most all CoD titles) lags for all players and punishes the host 100% of the time. Finally it has lots of maps but they are all very small. Horribly small actually. All-in-all I had more fun, longer games, better games, and almost no lag playing BF3. MW3 is just a rehash and while it's pretty and has a few new things...it's just lacking a few major items that are unfortunately required to play and enjoy the game. Things like not spawning all over and being killed the second you do or things like actually being able to get in a game. If you're going to spend $60 and given the economy...I highly recommend BF3 over MW3. Expand

A cheap copy, paste job. If you love Mw2 stick to that. It's not worth $60 for this steamy, pile hunk of garbage.
The campaign is what you expect from any Call of duty game...boring. Spec ops and Survival are pretty decent but it's nothing really spectacular, Zombies in Black ops & World at War are better.

Another fault of the game is your inability to jump on anything but a car or dumpster in the wide open, there really is no room for sniping on any of the maps. I'm not sure if it's just me or anyone is feeling how slow the character runs even with "Extreme Conditioning" active- I find my thumb aching from pressing too hard as a habit to make him run faster, highly annoying. The single game seems to be interesting albeit the same dream it seems I had in MW2 where you get babied along the missions. I wish the game was faster, more creative, and had more interaction with your surrounding on multiplayer. It also seems too "cartoonish" like Black Ops, not realistic like MW2.
The Pros: You get to vote on which board to play next which is a cool concept on multiplayer, The Vault allows you to look at how you did on multiplayer gameplay. There are new games to play like Kill Confirmed that add a new dimension.

For $60 two years after the release of MW2 you should be getting way more advanced graphics or better engine.

Anyways, by itself it's a great game. Compared to it's predecessors, it's a minimum upgrade.

The original COD 4 is highly regarded as one of the best games in the series, and the favorite of many. Unfortunately, since then, the COD games have become progressively worse. By MW2, things really got out of hand with its overpowered killstreaks and perks. After that, I could never take IW seriously again. I stuck with 3ark, and enjoyed Black Ops despite its flaws. At last, we have come to the not so epic conclusion; MW3. I like COD, but I warned my friends to not buy this. "It's going to suck," I said. Most didn't believe me.

Watching the playthrough of SP on YouTube, was I was amazed by how much was stolen from the previous MW games. "Back on the Grid" alone is completely stolen from COD 4's famous sniping stealth mission; down to the script, except now it in 10x more cheezy, predictable, and forced. References to past games arn't always bad; they can work. COD WAW had a similar mission, but there the elements are far more subtle, and the game still feels original. Here they just threw in whatever they could shove in there from past games with no originality; including ruining characters from COD 4 by pointlessly throwing them in only to die or disappear. I'm also tired of MW games always ending the same. You're hurt, lying on the ground, and you take advantage of a distraction to kill your foe. All this was cool in COD 4, but it's not original anymore!

I havn't even touched the MP yet; what a disaster that is. The first warning I had this game would suck was hearing about the return of quickscoping. Just when we were starting to move past that in BO, MW3 would have us backtrack to help some selfish "COD pro" make his YouTube montage. This may be a controversial topic, but it is my opinion quick/trick/no scoping is something that ruins the game. From what I see on YouTube, the killstreaks and certain weapons are still overpowered, and we all know from MW2 how much IW cares about fixing their games once they've taken our $. Map design is also terrible, and have a clostrophobic feel to them. Is sniping wasn't dead already, it certainly is now, and quickscoping has replaced it; what an insult. Beyond that, I can't say much since I havn't actually played the game online yet, I'll let whoever has describe the gun on gun action.

What a discrace for this game to be marketed as its own game. It's just MW2 with a few extra guns and whatnot and a forgetable story. IW, MW2 was bad, but it had a good story. This is just empty. The big review sites gave you the big reviews, but you get a 1 out of 5 from me for no originality or effort whatsoever. In short, don't buy this game, because that would only be rewarding bad behavior.

There are a lot of brilliant games out around this time, so I'd advise getting something else, such as Skyrim, BF3, Uncharted 3, Dark Souls, AC:Revelations. Just don't waste your money on this **** £40 of my cash wasted.

Enemies can get to you from 4 or 5 angles often.

The engine is 7 years old that has been tweaked here and there. BF3 has a new Frostbite 2 engine that has introduced large scale warfare maps.

The network is my biggest gripe, and when you consider it's rival BF3 has introduced dedicated servers the same old tired p2p hosted games just isn't acceptable anymore.

I give the game ZERO for innovation. MW3 is basically MW2's DLC, except you pay £40 for it, along with a £35 subscription fee to ELITE if you feel you've not wasted enough money. The actual gameplay is ok, but there is no excuse for releasing a game that looks and plays exactly the same as MW2. Do your job and develop Activision, there is no 'development' here.

Modern Warfare 3 is, essentially, an old game with a new face like many users are starting to realize. The single player is INEXCUSABLY short (clocking in at 4 hours 30 minutes) for a game that costs $60 and has a new iteration released each year. However, we will come to the negatives (of which there are many) in a bit, but first let's touch on what is good about the game:

The Call of Duty franchise is known for its multiplayer, an aspect that is even more fun when played with friends. This remains true, even in this iteration of the current gen shooter. I found myself having fun when playing with friends because the game is new, exciting, and its what they're playing at the moment, right? In addition to this aspect, there was a bit of change with how one upgrades their weapons through experience, ensuring a learning curve to actually using the weapon. Some of the older, overused, and "overpowered" weapons were also locked off until the later multiplayer levels, helping newer players survive a bit longer (since they wont be blown to ashes within the first 20 seconds of the match). That is where all the positives end.

    Now for the negatives:

I wont comment on the "innovation" (or lack thereof) that people seem to be upset about. The fact of the matter is this is the type of game people want to play. End of story. However, while it brings nothing new to the table, it should, under NO circumstances, detract from what was created for previous iterations of the franchise. I'll sum it up in these bullet points:

-Inexcusably short singleplayer with an unsatisfying ending that left me (and a few friends) scratching their heads saying "that's it!?"

-I will make a point in passing stating the graphics arent as sharp as they should be for a game in 2011. While I appreciate their restraint with lens flare (looking at you battlefield 3), these graphics arent up to snuff, and I feel like I've played this game time and time again.

-No playercard customization. While I wont have to look at the sexual imagery that was so prevalent in Black Ops, it is sad to see that I wont also find new, intriguing and plain cool designs.

-Map design. Map design. Map design. I have never seen so much camping in a Call of Duty game. Ever. There are corners. There are exploits where one can clip through trucks. There are catwalks and walljumps. It is bad. The maps are small, boring, and uninspired, drawing heavily from almost every other map you've ever seen in this franchise. Welcome to the skyscraper that is under construction AGAIN!

-The spawn system leaves me wondering how this was ever deemed passable by Infinity Ward or Sledgehammer. All too often, I spawn ontop of my enemy, next to them, behind them, at their domination point, or in the same spot constantly. It sucks. There is no other way of putting it. It will detract from a good time.

-"Pointstreaks" are a new form of killstreak that essentially allow one to do anything and get rewarded with massive explosions of death, which endlessly rain from the sky onto the map. You wont find it hard to get 9 or even 11 hit killstreaks in this game, assuming you have a bit of experience under your belt. The sky is ALWAYS filled with predator missiles, UAVs, Helicopters, or AC-130s. It gets to where one team dominates the other because they restrict access to the outdoors. This game is about PLAYER VERSUS PLAYER, not players versus fleets of helicopters and guided missiles. Pointstreaks merely detract from the overall game through overuse. I cannot stress this point enough. This is the sole reason, for me, that the game scored below a 4.

I was on the fence about purchasing this game. I wasted $60, but that doesn't mean I can't stop someone else from making the same mistake. Rent this. Do not buy. Go to the movies with your friends twice, and you'll get more out of it than actually playing the game itself. No friends? Go to a strip club and get three lapdances for the $60. There is no shame in saying it would be a better use of money. I tried to approach this with as much objectivity as I could muster, but I just cant recommend getting it at all. Do not believe the "official reviewers".

However, as the launch got closer I started to get more and more worried that my pre-order was money not well spent. When I finally got my hands on the game, my doubts were confirmed. The sound effects are beyond terrible. For example, one of the pistols (forget which one) sounds like a short burst of static when you shoot it... Some voice samples are almost comical. The in game mic quality is on a third world level. The maps are cluttered and boring. The menu and points etc popping up on the screen are a copy & paste from MW2. The perk tiers are messed up (quick reload and aim down sights now takes up 2 slots). 'Hekkkktik epic quikscoppezzz' are back.... COD Elite is a total waste of money. The campaign has some interesting parts, but is generally boring gameplay. Honestly the game is just garbage. It has become the McDonalds of the games industry. People keep going back for more, but really, it's just crap.

After 5 years or so of basically playing COD exclusively (not quite, but pretty bloody close to it), I think I'm done with the series.

The best thing to come out of buying this game is that I've raged from always playing COD and now have loads more time to play the multitude of truly epic games that are out there. Seriously, don't waste your time on money on this. It's been a good year for games. Go play something else.

Good grief! Big sense of déjá vu here. Expected much better from the "biggest entertainment launch of all time" and the "best shooter of 2011" which turns out to be the "most overrated game of 2011" and the "biggest entertainment flop of all time" not to mention the "lowest quality cash cow franchise of all time".

To be blunt, part of the low scores reflect the anger at feeling duped by critics who have given scores that only seem strengthen the belief that reviews are contingent upon a culture of satisfying the developer$ need$ at the expense of game development and industry health. Everyone understands the need to be profitable, so what you have here is the first shot across the bow that a great marketing campaign and the good will of fans of previous entries will no longer work in an annual business model. Which brings us to the extremely specialized evolution of the franchise, and not for the better. For me MW3 is still riding on the coattails of COD4: MW in terms of gameplay. MW was a hyper-realistic fast-twitch fps that had great map variation and a variety of builds/playstyles that were all viable. With MW2 you had sleeker graphics and even twitchier gameplay. The problem is that map variation and playstyle variety really started to suffer. I killed quicker, died faster, and looked prettier doing it. Unfortunately I had far less fun doing it and far less ways to do it competitively. With the advent of MW3, the game has evolved to an exclusionary extreme where map memorization and fast-twitch gameplay are 95% of the game. If your hand-eye coordination isn't top-notch or you don't invest 10+ hours a week into the game, frustration ensues. To add to the betrayal, it's almost all rehash and no innovation. Maps no longer offer any sense of variation and feel like rushed, inferior versions of previous entries in the franchise. Builds are a joke. Don't expect to properly breach with close combat builds, snipe properly from long range, or use a stealth build to gain any kind of edge. Fast-twitch and map recognition (along with a fast connection) are now kings of a long-since dead kingdom. Many of us are very angry that it cost us $60 to find out the hard way, and after being lied to ta boot by critics. Unless the franchise is revolutionized, I'll never buy another MW game. Expand

However, the more you play this game, the more you realize how good Black Ops really was. Lowdown: Survival mode was fun with friends, but was limited by two players and was extremely laggy the times I tried it online. The mics sound quality sucks because of MW3, and constantly gets cut off. Theater was copy and paste from BO and had one control set-up(really, IW?). Hit detection allows you to get one shot kills one game and makes you use your entire clip to injure someone the next.(Not to mention throwing knives!) Elite makes you quit MW3 and start up a seperate program. Switching lobbies is slow and not smooth, especially for Theater mode. Spawn killing is horrible, as is knifing, which is doubly worse from BO. Maps are pretty small, and have a bunch of random crap on them so when you are rushing through the field you get shot at by a bunch of people hiding around that crap. You can't join other people's parties without an invite, and matchmaking just plain makes IW look bad against Treyarch. The only thing that kept me playing it was that I wanted to see if I could beat my friends to 10th prestige. Also, there are no Combat records like in BO, unless you get elite, and even then you can't compare it with your friends. However, I do have to admit that the Campaign was a blast to play. So for all you out there who are on the fence, I wouldn't say "goodbye Black Ops" just yet. Expand

Modern Warfare 2 was a decent game at best, but this game is an absolute disgrace to the glory of the original Modern Warfare game. Not only is the story pointless and stale, but Spec Ops is unoriginal and the multiplayer is flawed right from its core mechanics. Worst of all, the sheer laziness reflected in this pseudo-action movie results in it being the worst value for money game ever. Everything about this game has been copy pasted from the previous games. Menu system? Looks exactly the same, albeit with a few graphical alterations. The HUD in multiplayer? Exactly the same. The graphics are so outdated right now. The only change in the aesthetic is an increase of the brightness of the textures. The character models are the same, the animations are the same. Hell, even a few buildings are ripped straight from COD4 and reskinned. Absolutely pathetic. I was hoping for a decent campaign, but all I got was a load of pointless, cliched garbage. The story is easier to follow, and characters aren't killed left and right like in MW2, but the magic that made COD4's short and sweet story awesome has faded away. The campaign desperately tries to be a Michael Bay action movie, yet takes some boring and predictable turns, except for one twist, which I did not see coming. Ending isn't much, but it isn't bad either. In summary, the "epic set pieces" are no longer "epic," and the story is unimaginative and boring.

Spec Ops is back, and is exactly the same. Short missions that may or may not be based on the campaign. Like the single player offering, this mode is merely a filler which no real flair or artistic creativity. However, there is a slightly amusing Survival mode, which pits you against the stupidest soldiers ever. Pretty much zombies, except without the zombies. Simply a gimmick, and nothing more. I enjoyed it for about...10 minutes.

Multiplayer. This is my most hated part of MW3. Remember MW2, well its back with some new guns and some new maps. You get the same old crap that MW2's annoying multiplayer had in store: Overpowered. superpower like perks, exploitable killstreaks, and maps which lack any real substance. In COD4, the maps and spawn points were designed to make every game seem like a mission. In MW3, it is just "run around, kill, die, repeat." COD4's perks weren't perfect, but at least they were actually realistic, and not superpowers. Customisable killstreaks are the worst thing though. Welcome to exploit city: population, every COD nerd. COD Elite is a joke. The maps are poorly designed. The weapons sound like crap. The people who play COD are stupid. This game is stupid.

If you have bought Modern Warfare 3, you're an idiot. If you bought Modern Warfare 3 at full price, you're twice the idiot, because there's really nothing new in this game, and the COD series now joins Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Guitar Hero as Activision's milking/already milked cows.

Great single player, deep story and great voice acting.
    Multiplayer:
The absolute WORST multiplayer of them all.The weapon sounds are crazy.REALLY BAD.For example the 44 Magnum sounds like MW2's Desert Eagle!
Most of the weapons are overpowered and as always there are the annoying snipers(camping in a building or behind a bush). It is unrealistic and bad.Not fun at all(it should be).Basically IW just copied MW2 and changed the gun sounds, the menus and added some new guns.
ELITE is the absolute worst thing on the planet.WHY pay 50 or 60$ a year for:maps clans are other not interesting stuff?WHY!?
Special Ops:It is good, not the best in the world and it still is not a good as zombies are(and it will never be).Survival is nice and the spec ops are quite nice.
    Average.

Let's just say it left me spoiled for what followed. I shouldn't be suprised I guess, since I did play mw2 a bit and didn't really enjoy it. Black Ops was a step forward I thought, something different. A lot more little details which make it fun. The graphics, bright and rich colours, the sounds like hit markers I especially like, having COD points to buy upgrades rather than MW3 having to use a crap gun for what seems like eternity before unlocking an upgrade or attatchment and by then You've unlocked a slightly better gun anyway. It's frustrating! It is much more fun for me the gamer, when I can choose what to play with! The guns don't seem to improve much either, in MW3 . I was frustrated to spend so much time unlocking everything to find the first gun was just as good as the last. No reward for the effort it seems. All In all I agree with everyone else, MW3 is just an add on to MW2 and seems like a step back. I found it dull to play, dreary to look at, and more like work than a game. I dragged myself to level 80 to feel like I got some money's worth, and havn't touched it since. I just play Black Ops now. I'm hoping the next game will carry on where Black Ops left off, or at least give us some fun improvements like customizable characters or choice of pre- set character or a lazer beam attachment,..anything! The same broken Multiplayer, the same try-hard 4 hour long story, and soon the same overpriced map packs. It is truly a disgrace, the way Activision keeps confirming their greediness, and lack of interest for their customers. This hasn`t bitten them yet, seeing as a lot of COD-players are very, very young. Too young to stand up and say "I will no longer let myself be milked dry like a cow. I will no longer let this company ruin gaming by repackaging the same game over and over again, therefore being a bad example for the rest". And even when the fans are a bit older, they still have ridiculously low standards, considering they like replaying the same broken game, over and over, paying 60 Dollars every year.

There is no difference from Modern Warfare 2 and this steaming failure of a game. All these official critics should be ashamed for not being able to stand up and say what this game really is, pathetic, boring, see-it-before waste of money.

Just as I suspected. An overhyped, copy and paste of Modern Warfare 2. Very disappointing, I'd like to give a higher score but I'm so angry, how could they re-release a game and expect people to pay £39.99? Same graphics, same gameplay, same multiplayer, same everything else.

I'm disappointed with this game. You would think, okay nothing is going to be as bad as MW2.. well MW3 is living proof that it is. The texture quality is like 360p, and at rare moments 480p.

The maps are too compacted. There's no real opportunity for you to set up your equipment without an enemy coming to you within 10 seconds after you placed your equipment down. Within 20 seconds,

The maps are too compacted. There's no real opportunity for you to set up your equipment without an enemy coming to you within 10 seconds after you placed your equipment down. Within 20 seconds, you'll encounter at least 2 to 3 enemies already. The flow of the game is not great.

They reused the layout design which is pretty sad. On top of that, if anyone here remembers the CoD4 map Pipeline, they reused the building where you can go up and camp. They put that building in one of their single player missions. I have nothing good to say about this game. A waste a money. Go get yourself Skyrim, Saint Rows The Third, Battlefield 3 or even Duke Nukem Forever.

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
