This is the exact same modern warfare game that was released years ago. Very little has changed besides a few tweaks to multiplayer and spec ops. I expected this game to be full of excitement and great changes, all im getting is an expansion pack of the failure game mw2. Activation thinks they can sell the same crap but re-branded, and some people don't give a crap because they haven't really played a real shooting game.

This game is a product of a gargantuan hype machine. The game play, controls, weapons, graphics, and pretty much everything else remains the same as the previous installment. MW3 is an average FPS at best. If you think this game is anything revolutionary, you are a lemming. period.

Most expensive map pack ever made. CoD map packs are usually around $15, yet they somehow thought that tacking on a 5 hour SP campaign would be worth the extra $45. Looking at it strictly as an expansion to Modern Warfare 2? Its a fantastic stand alone expansion. Only thing I despise more than studios charging $60 for map pack expansions is the foolish consumers that gobble it up.

The Modern Warfare series has finally wrapped up. So how good is the last installment. Well if you've played the previous Modern Warfare you'll have an exact picture of what the new one is like. Survival mode is addictive and fun but at times it seems impossible. All though Firefight and Horde mode from the Halo and Gears franchise are still much better survival mode is still a great game mode. The multiplayer is where Modern Warfare 3 shines. But the multiplayer doesn't shine at all. Like all other parts of the game the multiplayer is still "been there, done that". Same guns and same layout nothing new there. MW3 doesn't feel like anything ground breaking and the maps are very arena like. MW2 may have been a cluster fack, but when it came out everything in it was new and exciting, you cannot say the same about MW3. I don't see this game lasting long before people start looking forward to Treyarch's installment next year.

Sure its multiplayer is fun as ever but the high does not last as long as it used to. after about 3 weeks since its launch I returned it. Im back to black ops and MW2 when I want to use modern guns. Although I have to add that the single player has some awe-some moments in it.

Unfortunate to say MW3 is nowhere near as good as the previous games in terms of multiplayer, with the major drawback being the map design. With 16 maps included on the disc you'd think there would be atleast a dozen of good quality maps, instead you're met with 16 small, maze ridden maps that have no flow whatsoever. In my opinion there are about 3-5 bearable maps, the rest are so poor even the maps from Black Ops outshine. I seriously think when the **** hit the fan at IW all the map designers left because the 16 on offer are truly awful. Pretty much all buildings are locked out and everything is basically flat, there are no areas to cover your six and it's completely geared toward the Rambo COD gamers that run around like blue arsed flies shooting and running constantly.

It is a severe disappointment,. I was expecting this game to not match the quality of the previous two games but even then I was still majorly let down.

This is the worst COD MP I have ever played, and that includes COD2, COD4, W@W, MW2 & Black Ops.

This is a completely truthful opinion from a big fan of the series, unfortunately it seems that it is now time to leave it for dead (or atleast go back to the awesome MW2).

Seriously, the maps are truly awful. I am selling this game as soon as I have finished the campaign.

The story on MW3 felt better and more fun then Battlefields, I just got more into it and enjoyed it, more so when they had music going on while the action was happening and how you traveled around the world to different locals. Now for the Multiplayer, which honestly you can say COD changed so much, but they really didn't. Yes they added some new game types and added a few more weapons however mainly the same. They did reuse some maps, or just changed orientation of it to look new, same graphics as well. You can search youtube to see the comparison of reused graphics or if you have it go back to previous games and see the same things. A lot of noobtubing going on as well with the new gun(XM25 or something) that i have seen on most games, The servers well, if someone rage quits who is host get used to connection reset, searching new host etc.. Say what you will but BF3 I personally hardly have any issues like that. Over all this game while it is fun to play I would not give it a higher Score then BF3, to me Personally speaking just feels like an expensive map pack for MW2. But when it appears that the new IW and Sledgehammer took a cue from Medal of Honor (2010) in their multiplayer creation instead of carefully constructing balanced, strategic maps, you better believe fans will be irate because that's solely why people play COD: MULTIPLAYER. That is how nearly five years ago why this franchise became so well-known and adorned: innovative features in their multiplayer game. It is so apparent that the new people in the MW franchise had no experience in creating playable maps. It's so bad that even Black Ops's maps shine in comparison. I remember hearing that these maps were specifically designed to eliminate campers. You just have to laugh and scratch your head considering the various rooms and narrow corridors noobz can fork out. The quality of maps gradually declined after each subsequent installment. I think if the new developers want to redeem themselves from their ill-fated multiplayer design, they need to analyze and learn from the genius of IW 1.0 and understand what it takes to make truly competitive maps in order to make a QUALITY map pack instead of spray and pray mazes--because that's essentially what the new maps are! I seriously doubt BF3 fanboys are flaming this board too. It's really that bad, people. If the newbie developers, and Activision for that matter, want to continue the franchise, they better take a cue from the original IW and NOT TREYARCH in terms of multiplayer maps. Expand

May I also mention that even on Veteran, it was easier in this game than in the past Modern Warfares, namely the first one. The multiplayer was crazy in a way that the whole map is like a maze. You move a few steps and there are 4 paths to choose from. The graphics are slightly better but if you are one to compare to another fps that came out recently, it isn't as great. This CoD game was made to make people play and enjoy due to the way the developers decided to make things more even, especially to those that are new to the game and not good at playing it. The 2 head developers for Infinity Ward left. So you have the 2 key people developing your game and they leave so if you were Activision, what would you do? Do you get a new team (Sledgehammer) and rush to create a brand new game from scratch and HOPEFULLY keep everyone happy? Or, do you go the safe route and try to recreate the greatness from the last game, with a few tweaks here and there to make people at least a little happy? When you have almost 2 hundred million dollars in projected sales on the line and a possible billions invested in future titles, you take the safe route. Now, told start freaking out saying I'm wrong and whatever. I AGREE that the multiplayer is bad. I have had lots of lag issues and overpowering of the hosts and etc. I AGREE Elite (as of right now) is worthless. I AGREE that the campaign is Hollywood blockbuster style. (I havn't touched Spec Ops so I cant judge that) But here is the thing, all and all its not a 0 out of 10. A 0 is ET for NES. The multiplayer will surely have 20 thousand patches like every other Call of Duty and there will always be bugs. But in the end, we can't go back to Black Ops because its probably gonna be hacked to crap soon cause no one is monitoring it anymore. You could go to Battlefield but I hate vehicles. So you have 2 options, enjoy MW3 until White Ops or whatever the next one from Treyarch will be, or till Respawn Studios (The 2 guys who left Infinity Ward) make there new game. Or you can broaden your game interests to other great games like Uncharted 3 and Batman Arkham City for PS3 or Gears 3 and Skyrim for XBOX360. All and all its not great..but we are all gonna play it and are probably have 2 Prestige's under your belt. Expand

This game is literally starting to look like a copy and paste job, with very minor visual and audio upgrades and a few changes to kill streaks you would be forgive for otherwise thinking you already own this game, even the menus are just copied and pasted from previous titles. This game is not worth $60 in my opinion, either rent it first to see if you like it or find a used copy.

If you have just started playing call of duty and by this I'm assuming the last and only COD game you've owned and played is Black ops, then you will enjoy this game. A greater balance is achieved between weapons and kill streaks giving players a much more leveled playing field. The game contains "epic" set pieces that will make you feel like you're in a Micheal Bay movie with tons of explosions and bullets flying by.

And now they are back in MW3, ALREADY!!?? But the question is will they do something about them this time? Why is there no voting system in the loobys? It seems developers just don't care about anything but the money, because these problems are the same in MW2 and have been from the beginning. A game they have had a years to fix by now.

I would have given the game a 10 if not for the feeling that developers just don't care.

After almost a year to let the dust settle, I have found myself going back to Black Ops. What? Back to Black Ops? That goes to show that MW3 is nothing more than a rehash of what has already been done. Spec Ops missions are largely forgettable and the survival mode is nice, but only for so long.

The SP was drab and dull with pretty much the same old stuff i say pretty much as there were a few WTF moments in there. MP i have to say is a joke it appears to me that if you are not hardwired into the next generation fibre optic broadband from the future you will spend more time looking at the kill cam of the player who just murdered you wondering why no bullets came out of your gun. Bad spawns, non-flowing maps are just a few of the problems this game has. Some of the minor problems that are not game breaking like the inability to run and reload not being able to jump walls that are no higher than my knee are silly little things but can be a nuisance at times. This game could have really been far superior with dedicated servers but hey why would Activision spend their hard earned money on such trivial things. I and many others are highly disapointed in this game. I am not going to listen to the pre-paid hype next year and will not be buying another FPS that doesn't have dedi servers again. It was the same levels over and over you would start off silent and then it would hit the fan and a huge gun battle would ensue. As for for spec ops survival and mission. Survival is probably the best part of mw3 it was a needed addition and probably what made give this game a score of 5 it would have been lower without spec ops. As for the mission portion it was thrown together with hardly any thought, they just threw it in there it is not fun and it takes no teamwork i could run through the levels on my own without my partners help if i wanted to. Now as for the worst part of the game, online. This part is garbage, the maps are horrible besides a couple, every gun is a sniper rifle it seems and any noob can go 1 to 1 in this game. It has no skill and no teamwork, it endorses camping because people want to get there killstreaks and even when someone does get a killstreak it gets shot down seemingly right away which i have no issue with but im sure others due. Infinity ward and sledgehammer wanted to go back to their roots but in no way is this game anything like cod modern warfare. New modes have been added yes but existing problems with the core of the game(multiplayer) have not been addressed. Server issues, menu interface, spawn system, bland and still non interactive maps are among problems never addressed in mw3. In some ways it feels like a step backwards from the previous game Black ops, hell even the player emblems and titles look like they were drawn by a child where in Black ops not only were they varied and professional looking they were also customizable. Various other irks exist but truly the biggest failure is the hype behind Call of Duty Elite. Ignoring the launch issues that more than likely should have been foreseen, 95% of the service stat tracking and the like was already in Black ops and it was in game not separated (once again regressing). The media outlets projected it as if it would allow different play structures to exist like organized ladder tournaments and ranked matches to happen. This is not the case currently. I for one was really hyped to the consoles having ranked play as it would have allowed those new to the series or not as gifted to play while the uber players could truly see who was the better players among each other. Without any sort of meaningful service all Elite truly is is a map pack pre-order that I myself was duped into. Various other shortsightedness exists like the inclusion of strike packages that supposedly allow for support players to shine while the only stats tracked are K/D ratios and not goals and objectives show the product fails to live up to its own standards. As I continue to play (hell I payed $110 for it!) I await the next entry into the series and hope Treyarch or whoever develops it will redefine FPS as Activision not only has the talent to do, so but also the capital. Expand

The story copies its predecessorHow and why the hell would Russia simultaneously invade all of Europe? What did Europe do and how can the Russian army have the manpower for the invasion. Also, if the Russian president is flying over for a peace treaty, who the hell gave the order to invade Europe? Add to that the shallow and token attempt at shock and awe. In the game a child is blown up, but it's so shallow and token. What's the purpose? War and Terrorism are bad? The nuke in MW1 and airport shooting already proved that point. Even those shock moments have some meaning; the MW1's nuke caused general shepard to spark a war in MW2 and the airport shooting in MW2 lead to the Russian invasion in MW3. It's a cliched and poorly designed story that outdoes the neo-con fantasies of tom clancy and john milius. Sure some guy can say it's supposed to be like a michael bay movie or that multiplayer is the real meat. But the COD series have always campaigns that raised the stakes and stunned millions. I did however enjoy the CoD4 references such as Kamarov and Cpt. MacMillan making small returns and watching the sniper shot to Zakhaev and Al Asads nuke going off from the other side too. I wasn't a fan of the original spec ops and I'm not too impressed here either. The missions are recylced with different objectives and I personally didn't find it all that fun, even with a friend. Survival mode is a new addition to mirror Nazi Zombies and holds up well. You can choose from any map to play on and have access to air support and an armory. It's fun but why can you only play with one friend? If you could play up to 4 it'd be even better. Now the main part of CoD, the multiplayer. On paper it seems the most balanced CoD yet, there doesn't seem to be any overpowered perks and strike packages add a new twist to let even the worst of the players achieve something. The weapon leveling I approve of too. But the map design is awful, I could find 2 or 3 maps that I really enjoyed to play on. The rest have no flow to them. I'm not the best CoD player nor the worst but even I couldn't find that much fun to be had here. It's still a lot of headless chickens running about with UMPs or ACR's and you're killed almost instantly. Still it's always fun to kill half an hour or so. Overall I'm not impressed with this game. MW3 put extra power into guns while giving you less health, which is very unfortunate, and now at this point, MW3 has become 2 guns worth using, the ACR and the MP7 and I find no fun in that at all.
The Campaign was OK, nothing spectacular like MW2s but still a pretty balanced campaign and one worth not missing.

It is companies like Activision we can blame for the recent decline in the Japanese games industry we have unfortunately witnessed. CoD brought the sequelitis disease into gaming, which basically means a franchise bringing new installments annually with no significant changes. Modern Warfare 3 is the third time the same game has been released, only with a few online changes that would prove little challenge to have released as DLC or a patch for the first game, and an even more absurd, generic plot ripped from a low budget action flick filled with painful cliches. It saddens me to see CoD do so well in an industry where a lot of hidden gems do not recieve such recognition, while they are ones who truly deserve it. If you are a mindless child whose pea sized brain can handle nothing more than easy to follow shooters with about 6 hours of true gameplay, then you may enjoy this mediocre game. Call of Duty Elite is a new feature which doesn't really make a difference, only that you get double XP and new emblems and titles for your callsign. The single player campaign carries on the storyline from the end of Modern Warfare 2, in which Soap Mactavish gets stabbed and General Shepherd have a fight. This game expects everyone on earth to be big Michael Bay fans with the endless explosions, gassing of London and being pseudo-killed an uncountable amount of times in a helicopter. I will not argue that the multiplayer is bad, because it is good, the developers are just lazy and added about 10% more stuff into the game. All the kilstreaks are still there, you don't get any new attatchments, the leveling-up system with the weapons is poor at best and you will find yourself so bored with it after 4 hours (even after finishing the short campaign) that you will sell it on Ebay. I have friends that literally buy each coming COD for the sole reason that the next one will have new guns, perks, and maps. No care for plot or anything other than the multiplayer. Not that this isn't a good game since I've played a good chunk with friends...but it is a huge step down from Black Ops. The only thing 'fun' here is Survival Mode.

Gameplay- Very repetitive, yet addicting to a certain degree. Graphics- Ok, but no real memorable scenes or arcitechture.

Sound- Effects are good, music is forgettable. Presentation- Story is taken too seriously and one death of a main character is not nearly as emotional as the game thinks it is. Basic FPS.

However, be aware that multiplayer is based solely on speed of reaction, no team play, maps are overall small and spawns are really close, sometimes you will spawn right behind an enemy and even surrounded, as the designers of the game said, this game rewards the players who learn the spawn points and traffic routes, that is, if you are in location A you must learn that other players will spawn in point B and C, and find a spot where you can kill both while they are running in small corridors. This game is close quarter combat at its maximum.

If you already own previous games of call of duty, name it MW or BO, this is just another one. Nothing new, just cosmetic changes and change of names of the same stuff, at this point this game is just for first timers looking for a really fast pace FPS where killing 3 people without dying is an achievement for regular players, and for fans, fans never get tired of the same thing over and over and over and over. Everyone else, this game is not for you.

I would not be surprised if the proceeds for this game are going to the legal team that is being built to attack the creators of the Call of duty franchise Jason West and Vincent Zampella. I am sure that Robert Kotick is rolling in my money right now laughing to himself. But now on to the game am I supposed to be to amazed by. There is an argument in the gaming world if Battlefeild or Modern Warfare 3 will beat out the other in the long run. From what I have played of both of them; I would like it if a third party came along and destroyed them both. What ever that means I don't know. Graphics: I can't complain. Some very stunning moments, but I did get some strange texture pops.
Design: The reason I am giving this game a 4 is because at least there are somethings that do work. The twitch gameplay is what we've all come to expect from this developing company. Level Design: Signle player linear and boring. This is ridiculous, I just feel like I am being led by the hand and shown all the same enemy over an over. Multiplayer level Design: Are you kidding me. The release maps are all basic grid based square maps with some objects to provide minimal cover. There is something about all the maps that feel like claustrophobic hallways. Even the "open air" sniping maps seem small and cramped. Why can you not jump up on boxes that are knee height, but dumpster can be mounted easily?
Controls: Nothing to complain about here. Sound: Nothing to complain about here.

Conclusion: Next time when the hype is such that a company will spend good money two months before to promote the next "big" game. I will think twice. I think that consumers were thinking that this game was going to be some "new" an "amazing" experience that would keep there hopes up about the business. Unfortunately this game does not seem "new" the aspect of "amazing" seems to be some where in the past successes of this pony. Nostalgia is a good selling point.

MW3's campaign edges on your patience mission by mission following up with one boring step at a time. I had forced myself to play on hoping something exciting would happen. Unfortunately it took about half of the time I spent playing before something interesting actually happened, it took me until the level with the sandstorm to not get bored for a while. Then after that. The game once again starts to become less and less interesting. It took me a little under seven hours to complete the campaign on veteran. It might just be a matter of perspective but I thought it was much more fun in MW2 playing as the Rangers as apposed to MW3's DF. The graphics aren't much different then MW2. In fact they're exactly the same. Nothing has improved. You even see some of the same objects that were in MW2. Sounds of guns are okay but I have run into a few situations where the game will mess up and I'll hear a static-ish screeching that will force me to turn my sound all the way down until it stops. Half of the music flat out sucks. It's probably the worst soundtrack of any of the CoD series. You hear the delta force music so much that the mute button on your TV actually becomes useful. On to the multiplayer. In my eyes MW3 is slightly better then the camp fest known as MW2. It's no CoD4 but it's decent. Until the lag hits. Wow this game lags far worse then Black Ops ever did online. This company has made over a billion dollars from the Call of Duty name and they can't get better servers? The constant freezing in games and lag makes this game a joke. Just like Black ops and MW2 a lot of the maps in the game feel like they were designed to suck. This game's online interface has taken a huge step back from where BO was going too. The lack of in depth stat tracking and MW3's terrible theatre, which for some reason doesn't work for me half of the time (Out of Memory.) . I feel like whoever was working on the MP aspect just threw stuff together and called it a day. All in all. This game is below being what could be considered mediocre at best. The campaign blows. Survival should have been 4 players, and the online is really laggy. Multiplayer looks to be the usual affair, nothing to see here. This game really isnt worth paying for if you have any of the previous call of duty games.

Gamers like change in their games but its hard to do it right, change too much or change at the expense of good features and there will be complaints however even worse is when games stay the same. Time to retire modern warfare, the water in the well has become stagnant.

I have bought every COD game since 4, and MW3 is the first time I have been disappointed with the game. Part of that may be my own issue, for having too high of expectations. Part of it may be the hype machine around the game. But I think a lot of it also has to do with the game itself. I buy COD for the multiplayer. I like the single player campaigns, I play them, I enjoy them, but I buyI have bought every COD game since 4, and MW3 is the first time I have been disappointed with the game. Part of that may be my own issue, for having too high of expectations. Part of it may be the hype machine around the game. But I think a lot of it also has to do with the game itself. I buy COD for the multiplayer. I like the single player campaigns, I play them, I enjoy them, but I buy the game for the multiplayer. If the games did not have that component I would not buy them, except maybe in the cheap bins. That being said, the campaign in MW3 is fine... good even. And I had fun playing it. Where the game really falls flat, is in the multiplayer. Specifically, the maps. The maps that are included with the game are terrible, in my opinion. I have no stats to back this up, but in the previous COD games, it seems like the maps were well balanced between interiors and exteriors. I am willing to bet that 80% or more of MW3's maps are exterior/outdoor based. There are a million buildings on the maps... but virtually none of them are accessible. And those that are, are little one or two room structures. In the Wall Street map "Downturn," there is NOTHING beyond a small hallway on the second floor of one of the buildings. On a map that takes place among skyscrapers, you get one hallway on the second floor of one building. This issue is repeated over and over in the game, with many of the maps having buildings that are not accessible, or only accessible is so much as they provide a short hallway to get to the next area of the map. In addition, there are virtually no windows or vantage points on the maps to look out from. In addition, the George Lucas effect seemed to be working its magic on the developers. Virtually every inch of every map is cluttered with... stuff. Barrels, cars, debris, crates, and other random junk. The idea that less is more, was clearly NOT in their minds as they designed these locals. Finally, and in conclusion, the game and the maps for multiplayer seem designed for one style of play, that being "run and gun," which is fine and does not make it a bad game for everyone, but it does make it a bad game for me. The game and maps are not balanced to all types of FPS gamers, especially those like myself that like to take things a little slower and are more methodical. It is disappointing that they took a series that had been really well balanced and shifted it so heavily to one type of gamer. I won't say that I will never buy another COD game again, or anything as hyperbole as that. But I will definitely not blindly pre-order the next COD (and especially the next MW) game as I did with World at War, MW2, Black Ops and MW3. I will wait, maybe see if a friend gets it and try it out before committing to it. And maybe not having a COD game I like this year will give me time to try Battlefield. I did not see the point in buying it since I was getting MW3, but for only $28 to $30 around Thanksgiving, I am willing to give that a try and see if maybe that is a better game for me this year. Now im going to be completely honest here, having gotten the game 3 days early I can tell you one thing. It's simply more of the same. That's not to say the original CoD 4 was bad though, it's just completely over used and now getting to the point where it is ridiculous.

There's a tangible insistence from gamers that this series needs to evolve, but it seems unwarranted when it still leads the FPS class. The engine's definitely in need of an overhaul, but when it comes to thumping set-pieces and addictive multiplayer design, Modern Warfare 3 is still in a league of its own.

By sticking to the series' strengths, Modern Warfare 3 delivers some of the best competitive, cooperate, and single-player shooting in the business.

As a complete package, Modern Warfare 3 takes the cake. [Jan 2012, p.67]
