I haven't played such a cold, empty and souless game in a while. Leaving aside the bugs (which as a bethesda game we all know their technical level is sub 0, and this game is no exception) everything feels so cheap and rushed.

-General gameplay goes from empty interactions, amateur and dull voice acting, terrible NPC's and facial features/expressions that reminds me of oblivion.

-Completely outdate engine. New gen you said? The game can barely run on high end hardware, and its filled with artifacts, noise and pollution.

-Maps are empty, repetitive and pale... and obviously no vehicle so you wouldn't realize how empty they are as quick.

-Whoever the f made the gun play never played a shooter in their life.

    -Loading screens EVERYWHERE.

-The AI is probably the worst AI i've ever seen, no exageration.

200+m budget game, i wanna know exactly where that money went because on hiring talented people and investing in resources and technology for sure not. Just to think this is 8 points away from BG3 is ATROCIOUS and a big disrespect to the gaming market, developers and players.

Less romancable companion than fallout 4, the ship combat is terrible, there a lot of loading screens everywhere, traveling is just fast travel on a map, they force you to walk places when you should have just landed next to your mission, you need to physically meet characters to talk to them even if it's just to turn something in. Outerworlds at least doesn't feel this silly you can talk to people through your comms all the time. There's no ambience or mystery like FO or Skyrim. It just takes itself really seriously. Then it becomes a joke with game elements that aren't realistic. You can build your ship, but you can start attaching things just for the system to tell you you need an engine out of you flying rank. Does that make sense? I'm not allowed to go buy a V8 Truck in the real world? I don't feel like talking to anyone, no one has anything interesting to say. The factions seem too similar and are all basically just the same thing. Most enemies will be mercs. Remember ME2's only bad guy. It's basically that. You are not voiced, and that can be a very good thing in a game like this, but in this case it's not. You don't get any extra talking points, you barely get the basics like lying and persuade. The days of making you character super intelligent and having extra dialogue or super dumb and extra dialogue is over at bethesda. I can't believe a small dev like obsidian beat you at your own game.

Bethesda choose space and the future for this project, but we are still forced to travel and communicate like were in a wasteland. Shows you how shallow their games are without all the in-between.

TLDR; Just go play outerworlds for a space RPG, or look for a space sim, because this is trying to be both and it exceeds at neither.

The game could have been better and I have faith that the modders will make the game better. But Bethesda should consider that it's time for them to change their game engine and make games that are within their capabilities.

Alas, Starfield has proven to be beyond the company's capabilities. Many of the promises made by management turned out to be outright lies. I consider myself deceived, but I respect the good workers at Bethesda. Alas, they are run by incompetent people who have lost touch with the players and no longer understand what people like.

I wish Bethesda to change their management and not repeat Starfield's mistakes. Don't listen to those who praise this game. It's a failure. You will most likely regret the money you spent.

Old engine, old graphics, old animations, look at the baldur's gate 3, they didnt even had the proper budget but look at what they done and look at starfield. With all that money, they made this.

It feels outdated all they way, the mechanics are the same from every other game from bethesda, they have not changed anything in 15 years, the IA its the most basic, dialogues and storyline are vague and simple, nothing interesting. There is no reason to explore planets since they dont really exist in the game, they are procedural generated portions of map that repeat assests over and over, its irrelevant what planet you visit, you can explore all the assets in a single planet just generating new portions of map all over it. It does not feel like im travelling through galaxies and systems at all. Loading screens, eventho they are 2 seconds, are annoying and breaks any inmersion the game could generate into the player, the game is not a big galaxy or map to explore like previous games, but small portions of map you have to load through to get to your destination, way too many loading screens and teleports to everywhere, there is no journey to a new location where you encounter random things on the way and end up doing something else. In general an OK game, I wish bethesda would be more ambitious in their games, this is not the most ambitious game from Bethesda. The ridiculous amount of loading screens for a next-gen only, 2023 AAA game is laughable. When jumping to another system, ok, FINE, but why is there a loading screen when I enter a tiny store with 4 walls and 1 NPC?? Or my own freaking ship?

The quests are uninspired for the most part. Don't get my started on the intro of the game, by far the most boring one of any Bethesda game - Hey you random miner, take my ship and robot because reason.

For much better quests and NPCs(and graphics), there's cyberpunk and Baldur's gate 3. For a much better exploration game, there's No man's sky. For much better space combat there's games like Elite dangerous or still NMS, etc. Starfield does many things just either poorly or average.

When you're a big studio like Bethesda, backed by a giant like Microsoft you can't just pump "mid" games because of laziness/greed (talking about the execs here)where every other studios out there work their ass off to push the limit of video games, and expect people to forgive you because you made an extraordinary game 12 years ago, Skyrim.

To end on a positive note, the ship builder is by far the best part of the game, whoever made this, give them a raise.

I can ignore some typical for Bethesda engine bugs at start because it possibly to fix in future patches.

They are directly copy and paste story, special skills, most of game mechanics, game engine old poor mechanics from past games like fallout and skyrim BUT they did it badder.

Its Skyrim without dragons, magic and mystic creatures. (you possible to get cry's like in skyrim)
Its Fallout 76 with pathetic npc.

    - Endless loading screen - I wonder what will happen first - Bethesda will go bankrupt or change the game engine and hire talented writers and character mimicry designers. - Look up how things should be done in GTA or CyberPunk2077.

    - The cheesy story of the main plot. - Look up how it should be done in Baldur's gate 3.

    - Flat and unmemorable companions. - Sneak peeks at how things should be done in Baldur's gate 3.

    - Cheesy npcs facial expressions. - Look up how to do in Baldur's gate 3.

    - 5 auto-save slots and 1 quick save slot. you can't put 100 and 100 slots. If you didn't do a manual save - you lost the ability to come back. 5 autosaves is 15 minutes of game play. You are living in a single player open world rpg with a goldfish memory like in some roguelike. - Look up how to do it in baldurs gate 3.

    - Why make trash pickable if it's worthless and useless? It just wastes my time to see that it's garbage.

    - Why put the player in front of a choice - to become superhuman and step into the unknown or to remain an ordinary man and not go anywhere. It's a disgusting choice. Just allow in and out. why do it. ugly.

The text highlights a dilemma faced by players in a game's final stage. They have the option to become a super being and enter the unknown or stay an ordinary person and continue living in the game's universe. However, the text criticizes the game for not clearly indicating that choosing to become a super being means losing all progress, including ships and completed tasks. Additionally, after only 15 minutes of playing in a new game+, the autosave system deletes all previous saves, eliminating the option to remain a normal person. The text argues that the game's development is lackluster, with outdated game engine, limited save options, and the developers disregarding player comfort and convenience.

"Starfield feels like it was produced in the past and certainly doesn't belong to 2023. The planets and landscapes are utterly barren. Cities are lifeless, and NPCs lack any meaningful depth.

While the game offers an abundance of quests, it still falls short. Starfield feels outdated and lifeless. Even compared to Skyrim, it can be considered less modern and vibrant."

From the soulless husks of NPCs ignoring you shooting their shop up to their empty Stares (Starefield is real) to the shallow combat and tedious quest design from the ancient times, where quests were all about fetching 10 Guffins to the McGuffin Man so he can tell you what a Good Boy you are. And of course being a complete rando who, for an inexplicable reason, everyone trusts implicitly do to their dirty work.

I like Bethesda RPG Formula but this one is getting super stale and Garfield doesn't improve on ANYTHING. Everything feels stanky old, with no innovation, not a single fresh idea or thought. A rehash of Ancient Gaming.

But there are positives! The game sounds amazing. The writing is, surprisingly, NOT cringe and is way, way above the **** the like of Mass Defect: Andromeda, for example. The detailed environs feel fun and the immaculate detail to many interactions are quite immersive, even if that immersion is broken 5 minutes later by a Bethesda Certified Bug.

Solid game, in total, but a bit of a yawnfest.

I'm really disappointed, I've been waiting for this match for a long time and now it's a cold shower.

    Let me explain:

I was expecting an innovative game. This is what Bethesda was selling us as an argument. They also sold the game to us by telling us "The planets will be explorable in their entirety".

But that's not the case, we're on Fallout 4, in space, with a procedural generation similar to that of No Man's Sky, AND THE BIG BLACK POINT (for me anyway): we can't land freely on a planet, nor take atmospheric flight or travel in a vehicle on the surface of a planet. WHICH MEANS THAT EXPLORATION (which they sold us!) ONLY EXISTS DURING LOADING TIMES!!

The game is completely empty (well no, it's filled with "space pirates" everywhere outside of cities), and if you've ever played Fallout 4 you'll understand that the game is exactly a carbon copy, but in space with procedural generation (and less well)...

The story is sloppy as possible, we find ourselves propelled into the adventure with a simple snap of the fingers (and it's called "RPG"), I'm not going to spoiler but it's really not a credible story. And apart from the story, most of the NPCs you come across will have a small side quest to allow you to negotiate with a particular person, or look for an object,... in short, Fallout 4 (procedural) and no surprises.

Moreover, the "negotiations" are generally totally false and this inevitably leads to a fight.

Procedural generation obviously only serves to make us stay on GamePass with a myriad of bogus quests and pirates in every corner of the map.

Bethesda, you made a terrible mistake in getting bought by Microsoft.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to start off this review by saying Starfield is a good game and it should be worth checking out on game-pass but it’s outdated game engine and it’s over ambitious world leaves me feeling like I have traveled a vast ocean that was as deep as a puddle. Pros:I liked the base building and the ship customization and the fact that you can shoot down an enemy ship in space and take over their ship gta style , now that was an awesome experience. I love how each planet or moon add their own gravity strength levels. I liked the space combat even though it can be clunking at times. The gun place is a huge improvement from fallout but it’s still not the best gun play experience and can be greatly improved. Cons: the games story is very lack luster and boring. Most of the time you are sent on a boring fetch quest of retrieving these artifacts. Go to this planet and get the artifact. Over and over again no boss battles no interning things. The games story only gets good during the last mission when you are teleporting to other universes but other than that you will be doing the same thing. Another con for this game is you have to look hard to find a good quest through all the boring fetch quest no creativity!! The game feels very old and clunky and character models look terrible. The graphics look average. There’s no real exploration and the game is a loading screen simulator. Even though this was the least buggy Bethesda game I still ran into game breaking bugs that didn’t let me progress some of the quests. What I think they should have done:
I believe they should get rid of the creation engine.
I believe they should have lowered the scope of their world. Instead of 1000 planets they should have have like 3 solar systems max and flesh out each of those worlds and made it to where you can land and leave without loading screens. I want to fly around the planet and shoot people from my space ship and bandit camps. The worlds feel empty and dead each planet has the same abandon outpost and the same reskin 7 creatures that do the same thing . The world just doesn’t seem alive even in the main settlements. The city needs life like being able to interact with the environment. Like imagine if you were able to play darts in neons bars or play some arcade machines or gamble or play pool or go to a strip club and have a lap dance or imagine playing a game of basket ball in space with some random npc or have a drone or mini car race or better yet ship races in a huge arena for a crowd of npc to watch. Things like that can really make you feel like you’re part of the world and having npc partake in those things can really make things alive. Why do people compare this game to Skyrim? The only thing this game shares with Skyrim is its engine. Exploration in Starfield is terrible and should not be compared to Skyrim. Skyrim you can go in any direction and find something awesome and unique during your exploration. For example I was just wandering around Skyrim and I stubbed across a talking dog that lead me to some crazy demon quest with some impactful choices and rewarding me with a cool ass weapon. All that from just wandering or seeing something in the distance. Quest are unique and interesting and you had impactful choices. You can’t do that in Starfield sadly. The game needs diversity. I’m tired of fighting the same enemy. I’m tired of fighting a reskin spacer or pirate.THEY ARE THE SAME. I think it was mistake to not introduce other alien race factions. Like imagine real intelligent alien life forms or like maybe add like space zombies or mutants or something unique other than the generic space pirate. Imagine and alone race with their cultures in the game or you can choose an alien race. That would have been cool. There much I think they should add but I’m getting tired of typing so I will leave that there.

This game was supposed to be XBOX's salvation because it had been years since they released a decent AAA title; it wasn't just money at stake, but also their reputation. After the disasters of Halo Infinite and Redfall, in which Spencer was hanging by a thread, they needed to do damage control, and a marketing battle ensued, inflating everything from press releases touting Starfield as a masterpiece to concurrent player numbers. There are already Reddit threads about the game's lies, hype, and technical issues, but I don't want to go into detail so I don't sound like a broken record. I was disappointed with Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 after having enjoyed Fallout New Vegas, which is a **** masterpiece despite its flaws. Skyrim had its high points, but it wasn't the best Bethesda could offer, especially with a sometimes stupid narrative like the Thieves Guild. Bethesda appeared to abandon their fanbase in order to "modernize," betraying us in favor of new players who only wanted action and collecting forks, where quantity was more important than quality, but with Starfield, they went to the extreme: in 2023, they presented a game with the quality of something from two decades ago. The architecture, player expression, and narrative design are all terrible. An AI appears to have written the plot, dialogue, and NPCs. There is no freedom, no choices with narrative consequences, the gunplay feels like an AA indie, and the mission structure is to be a messenger, fetch items, press buttons, or give materials, with A and B decisions identical in almost all of them and nothing changing in the gameplay ecosystem. It is not news that Bethesda has fallen behind with its graphics engine, but it is sad that with games like Planescape Torment, Gothic, Dragon Age Origins, Mass Effect, Fallout New Vegas, The Witcher 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, Disco Elysium, Octopath Traveler, and the recent Baldur's Gate 3, which as an RPG surpasses it in reviews and simultaneous players even a month after its release, they are still using the same generic clichés from decades ago. It's time to move on, Bethesda. You have so much more than just Starfield. Expand

Weirdly enough, many people like to say that this is a Bethesda game, but what this actually translates to is a game that never evolved past 2011, a game that is a quarter-mile wide and an inch deep.

It has one of the most boring storylines I've ever played, with many characters having almost no personality, to the point where it feels forced rather than a well-designed story.

There's very minimal exploration with an abundance of loading screens, something you would expect from a 2013 game, not a 2023 game. The exploration, if you can call it that, involves running from point of interest to point of interest, with a nearly barren planet on 90% of every planet you come across. To add to this, the points of interest are all copy-paste, with very little variety.

The ship building is arguably one of the most talked-about aspects of the game, but unfortunately, the ship building serves no purpose, as there's no exploration beyond going from loading screen to loading screen.

The gunplay is by far the best part of Starfield, but unfortunately, even its best part is average for 2023 standards. They managed to program basic gunplay into the game, which is nice, but beyond that, it's just nice gunplay with a very procedurally generated loop system and very lackluster AI.

In conclusion, my review stands: if you're interested in playing Skyrim made 10 years later with very few improvements and essentially a space reskin, then Starfield is the game for you. On the other hand, if you value your money and want to play something more modern, I would highly advise against picking up this game, as it has nothing redeemable about it besides being a "Bethesda game."

First hour was slow, but so were other games, so I do not mind that at all. I was struggling with controller controls the first encounter and well, the future encounters, but The tutorial was done, im free to fly a ship. Well, "free", more on that later. The ship controls arent bad, but the UI seems a bit cluttered and the manueverability is horrible, but I guess that has to do with my ship. Getting to know the ship controls. The adjustable rotation is nice to have, but would be better to have side thrusters for better lock on enemies. Having 3 weapons, I dont know, seems a bit too much, I would rather have two weapons, where I can change each with parts in ship design, two would be better in my opinion. Three seems a tiny bit much, especially for controller. But again, I struggle with controllers

The ship Tutorial is done, I fly to kill some pirate leader with.... overly obnoxious robot. Here start the problems I have. The companions are more annoying than a god damned Lydia from Skyrim. And first I though, its just the robot... no... all of them are. You go encumbered and they immediately comment "oh, your looting will slow us down" and stuff like that. All. The. Time. It drives me nuts. And I get they are essential NPCs.... I just want them to either shut up or die for that. Im a "loot goblin" let me loot.
A nice touch is the lockpicking system, I found it quite fun and can only imagine how hard it can get on higher difficulties, but thankfully the easy ones were.... easy... even medium one, extremely easy. But I will give it benefit of the doubt, that it will get harder and I would like that.
The combat AI is easily flankable, not something that needs to be written about.
The interior design is actually kinda good, I like it, how there are all the things everywhere. A bane to my looting tho... as it all weights a ton
Having some purple gear and some rares from the pirate capitan I get to my ship and fly away....
Then it hits me. There is no free space, its just one huge box, where I am required to fast travel no matter what. I also saw people on twitter showing, how they fly through planets and Sun. This is quite awful to be honest. I wanted to just land anywhere and have the planet generated and just go anywhere, guess not... ( it can still be a box, but let me land there... physically, not in loading screen hidden in cutscene )

So first city comes with another load of problems... load... you know.... because there is like loading screen for like every tiny shop, that can just be in the world without loading door?
So here comes the 30 year old engine, that was just decent when it came out and now is just a huge hinderance.
Okay, i played my mailman part, gave the guys my weird alien metal or alloy or what that is and now comes the worst character in the game, even worse than the robot... the fricking blonde girl.... JUST.SHUT.UP. shut your month. No buts, no ifs, just go into the corner and shut up.

As I have lack of characters lets just get a bit quicker...
The weapons seem okay so far, decent ( in terms of variety ), feeling is alright, better than many games.
The same cant be said about the suits, helmets and clothing.... The beginning ones just seem superior to all... I have yet to come upon a purple suit or helmet, so I ant tell that much, but even blue one seems hardly as an upgrade.
Is there a crafting station in my ship ? havent found one, so im walking with all the materials.
The 5 second sprint and then literal dying is just god awful. Who came up with this ?
I know they are planets, but at least make the story ones, i mean the boxes you have a story mission in a bit more...... not a barren landscape.
I have yet to fly with a jetpack, havent tried that.
The story is aight. Nothing that interesting.
The graphics... 2018 graphics in 2023 arent a good look... pun intended as always

now the social part. I dont want the game to "finally be fun" after 40 hours of gameplay... its the same like Bleach fanboys "just wait, after 700 episodes, it finally gets better, I swear". The game is supposed to be fun at the start, its supposed to grab you and make you want to play it.

I will play more of it, but I dont really want to. Its just decent. There are better games to sink your time into. Is whats in Vanilla. I bet those 900 mods will make it good, but mods arent the game. If we will rate it as a GAME, its decent 6/10, maybe 7/10 if it really gets better later on for me.
We cant rate it as modding FRAMEWORK just yet, we dont know what community will do with it, so there is just UNKNOWN for me....

At the end of the tunnel the truth was revealed, Starfield was only media and paid reviews. The game is incredibly mediocre, from the AI to the scenario design, to the combat mode and the terrible game optimization, this game is not worth half of what it costs, maybe in a year because of the mods and the I developed this polish, but right now I feel like I'm looking at a game from two decades ago

If I'm not mistaken, I believe it took me about 12 hours to start liking the story which is just outrageous. A video game should not take me 12 hours to start getting likable. That is why I'm giving this game a 6/10. There is things to do, but they get old quickly, and the story is not all that good. Expand

exploration is so useless here and dont feels like u ever left the last system or planet...

10 loading screens to come to the next system from 1 city to another... and they are all meaningless steps...

i mean u could also have a rick and morty portal gun and thats it... 1 loading screen and bye fake "space exploration" wich does not exist at all... and we would at least got not a loading screen simulation...

i am sorry bethesda but nobody of you played ever an exploration game like no mans sky... this feels immersive... this even has a story... this even has no walls and 100 restrictions like your "open world"... in NMS i can actually explore and have a progress with my ships and weapons and upgrades and then u can quest too... and have a interesting deep story!!!

Movement is bad. This includes 1st and 3rd person. Also 1st and 3rd person walking is drastically different. You instantly move in 1st person, but 3rd person is delayed so the character animations can go through. If you run and jump, but suddenly stop pressing w you just stop moving all together. There is no momentum.(You're in space I promise you there is momentum.)

Flying your space ship in 1st person is nauseating. 3rd person is required and even then is not a 'fun' experience. Looting requires you to fly to each ship to press e on them where as mining on land it auto loots. Changing power allocation on your ship mid flight for combat is not engaging. If they could allow for power allocation presets it would be more enjoyable.

Game tries to get you to use their cover system, but it feels like you're fighting with the games programming to even trigger the cover action. Bullets shoot from the tip, but they do not shoot straight out the barrel they go diagonal from the barrel to the cursor.

The faces are jarringly bad. Not uncanny valley bad. If anything it looks like a mannequin. Eyelids don't line up and clip through the eyeballs. The mouths look like they just came from the dentist and are fighting off being numbed up. I spent an hour in character creation to make something that I could at least at the end of the day like, but gave up because the creator was just awful to use and everything looked well.. bad.

I've read many posts say the game gets good after 12-15hr. If the average person has time to play games for 1-3hr a day that is a week of playing the game before it pays off.

I would not recommend this to anyone. I would not recommend it to people who like Bethesda games. I would not recommend it to people who like space exploration. I would not recommend it to anyone who likes resource gathering and base building.

Your time is best spent elsewhere.

Visually, Starfield is stuck in the past, at least for 10 years. The mediocre graphics combined with a noticeable lack of optimization leave much to be desired, especially for a AAA title in 2023.

Starfield is built on an outdated engine from Skyrim or Fallout 4. It is so ancient and miserable that any mods cannot hide all its flaws. A seamless world in a space exploration game? Forget it.

    Instead, you will get:

    - Absolutely horrible NPC face animations

    - Overcomplicated UI

    - Loading screens, loading screens everywhere non-stop.

    - Exploration is boring after visiting yet another dead planet.

    - Choices don't really matter and have barely any impact to ending

    - Bugs, visual bugs, AI bugs, or any other types of bugs

    - Stupid quests like a "find X of some crap and bring it to those NPC", like in games from 2010y.

The gameplay itself, "shooting and looting", is somewhat enjoyable if you are in 2012, but currently, we are in 2023, and now Starfield gameplay is just boring.

So, maybe Starfield isn't worst game ever, but it's definitely not worth the money. Buy it only on sales with big discounts.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure how this is getting 10/10 with all the performance issues, how terrible FSR 2 looks, the constant loading screens, the empty space gameplay, the rushed stories you're thrown neck deep into without getting to develop your character before being thrown into these major events (for example, the Vanguard after your first mission suddenly you're now a spy for the UC Navy going in deep cover against Crimson Fleet). The sound has issues as when other people start talking, everything overlaps and the conversation you're trying to hear becomes too quiet to hear. Subtitles get overridden when additional conversations are happening. Surround sound gets too low unless you're literally right up in the characters face. Ship building was way overhyped and very limited with only a handful of manufacturer parts and not all match if you try to intermix them to create something unique. Also experiencing constant game freezes and I have to force close the game, luckily it's in full screen windowed so I can alt-tab to the task manager but that's another issue is no exclusive full screen so other apps won't keep popping up over the game. I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
