It is the best game Bethesda has released in 20 years, but in a year when BG3 has redefined how good it is possible for an RPG to be, I can't justify giving Starfield more than an 8.

Yes, the game is not perfect. It does have its flaws, like loading screens and the occasional wonky NPC that shambles by. But having said that, it's still the most fun I've had with a game all year. This is easily my Game of the Year as it even beats out Zelda: TOTK, in my opinion.

Yes, the game is not perfect. It does have its flaws, like loading screens and the occasional wonky NPC that shambles by. But having said that, it's still the most fun I've had with a game all year. This is easily my Game of the Year as it even beats out Zelda: TOTK, in my opinion.

If you go into this looking for No Man's Sky you'll be disappointed. If you go into it looking for a Bethesda RPG, there's a lot to love. It's a Bethesda RPG through and through. Lots of quests, side quests, random encounters, emergent storytelling, etc. You can even be a space pirate and attack and board ships and then steal their ship and make it your own. If you're into base-building and ship-building there's a lot to love here too, but I haven't dabbled too much into that.

It's also worth noting that this is the most bug-free game Bethesda has ever had at launch, which is fantastic. I haven't noticed many bugs and have had zero crashes. Some people don't want to mention this because they're sadists and want to punish Bethesda for past offenses from decades ago. I ask you, if you're a teacher and a student who consistently gets D's starts to work hard and then gets an A, do you continue to punish the child for their failures of the past or do you congratulate them for a job well done? A decent, sane person would congratulate them. Only a psychopath would continue to punish them.

It's also worth noting that this is the most beautiful game Bethesda has done. Yes, some character models are weird, but the environment art, from the natural landscapes to the cluttered base interiors, is sublime. Their Global Illumination techniques are gorgeous and work very well. Sure, the game isn't as pretty as Cyberpunk or Horizon Forbidden West, but so what? This game is doing so much more than them.

Instead of focusing on the few things the game doesn't do, focus on all the things this game is actually doing. And it isn't any one thing. You need to see the forest for the trees and see the totality of the experience. Sure, you can't directly fly from planet to planet like NMS, but who cares? NMS doesn't have the some degree of role-playing quests and storytelling. And most of NMS's planets have one biome, whereas some of Starfield's planets have up to 4 distinct biomes on one planet.

I love this game more with each passing day. It's a genuinely special experience and if you like CRPGs it is very much worth your time. It gives as much as you put in.

Note: I've been playing on both XBox and PC.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is... excellent. It has kind of a rocky start, but after that it really comes into its own.

The main exploration gameplay isn't going to be for everyone, but I certainly enjoy it. You touch down on a random planet and have a checklist of all the flora, fauna, resources, and special features to survey. Once you complete the survey, you get it as an item in your inventory which you can then sell for 500-1000 credits or so. The planets also have semi-randomized locations with spacer bases and occasionally radiant quests to clear out those spacer bases. The fun part is because they're all randomized, there's no pressure to do them. You can just hop over to a spacer base, get the 20xp for finding it, then bounce away.

The boost pack is fun and adds interesting tactical choices, like jumping between cover on the outside of a base and sniping. It's less useful indoors, but can still sometimes help to get to higher ground. Space combat is a little frustrating at first, but once you get a better ship than the starting one it gets a lot better. The persuasion system in this game is hands down the best I've ever seen in any game, bar none. You have 3 chances to make persuasion rolls and need X number of successes to persuade them. What makes this great is that even though your choices are randomized each turn, every option has a success and failure dialogue line unique to it, so it feels like you're having an actual conversation.

I think the weakest aspect of this game is the main plot. The rest of the factions are fine and the writing is pretty solid, I just don't like Constellation. I think the problem is so much of the development was spent building this huge universe and all these factions and all the new tech that they forgot to answer the question of why we should care at all about Constellation or want to join them. They just showed up after a very truncated opening, immediately put me in danger and got 4 of my colleagues killed, then gave me a ship, a robot, and a watch and said, "You're part of something bigger now." Then they ask, "Aren't you at least a little curious about the artifact and the vision?" Um... no? I'm a bunny hopping snake cultist with a mortgage, I don't care. If they were a small down on their luck explorer's club that is always accepting applicants but nobody joins because they don't pay well and nobody cares about exploration, that'd be one thing. By making them exclusive, however, they come across as arrogant, condescending elitists. Just because I was invited to the popular kids' table doesn't mean I don't know they're awful.

Where this game really excels, though, is letting you make your own story. Here's mine thusfar:

After politely declining Constellation, telling them I needed time to think, I set out to buy my own starship because I don't want to be indebted to them. I did some odd jobs around New Atlantis and helped out the police, but I only managed to scare up 20-30000 credits and the cheapest ship goes for 54000. The cheerful man at the bank turned me onto some debt collections I could do for them, so I reluctantly borrowed the Frontier and headed out.

I had to stop over at a small system on the way, figured I could do some surveying, sold them to a small colony I found, along with some weapons I got off some mercs that touched down on the way. When I arrive in the debtor's system, I get a distress call, a colonist who's been being harassed by spacers. I respond and end up getting embroiled in a series of space battles. First battle goes poorly, so I stop over to collect the debt before I get myself into more trouble.

Speaking of, I check out a tower on that planet that I thought was abandoned, get into a huge fight with some spacers and use most of my medical supplies. I also find a box of contraband Earth antiques in an air vent, decide to take it with me. A Spacer Raccoon ship touches down and I decide to sneak up and steal medkits in their loading bay. They spot me, a fight ensues, I hop up on their ship and snipe, then take cover in the loading bay and finish them off. The last guy takes off running and the ship takes off with me in it. I gun down the captain and her guards and now I have a new ship, much tougher than my old one, and free too. I collect the debt and help the colonists finish off the spacers. It's a close thing, though. I finish off the last of them with no medkits and a quarter health.

I head back to New Atlantis hoping to offload my cargo and see if I can find a buyer for that contraband. The Raccoon doesn't even need to stop at the other system. I'm told I have a percentage chance to hide contraband. I do not. I am arrested and transferred over to a UC capital ship... in orbit around Mars. Far away from where I'm supposed to be. UC Commander Ikande hires me to work undercover and infiltrate the Crimson Fleet, and here's where I leave off.

So, this game is awesome... if you let it be.

But besides that there is so many things to do in the game that even if you don't like half of it you can still find hundreds of hours of quality content, with limited minor bugs, the music and art style are perfect, the graphics when talking about lighting, materials and level of detail are amazing but it lacks a little bit with the characters and face animation, finally it has decent performance, I have a RTX 3070 and playing in 1440p ultra settings I get mostly 60fps dropping to 40 in big cities.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's FO4 in space. If you liked FO4, or Skyrim, it's that, but better, bigger, less buggy, better looking and generally improved in every sense. And yes, it has the mod platform that made everyone happy. Yes, there's already SkyUI and THOSE mods.

WARNING: The sheer scale of it makes the game slow to start and it has very little handholding. Either this is for you or it isn't. 1000 planets. The mid planets take an hour to do. Rich planets can take 10. THIS TAKES TIME.

I have no idea why people compare this to other space games. It was never going to be Fortnite, it was never going to be Elite Dangerous. It's made by Bethesda. You're getting a Bethesda RPG. Through and through.

And I hate to see it, maybe the review trend will turn, but for now it's enveloped in people complaining that mechanics that are in the game aren't in the game. This is an RPG. You need to put points in Piloting to be able to pilot. You need to put points into jetpack to get traversal and fly. And you need to be 30 hours in to start getting superpowers.

So word to the wise, skip reviews that are basically "boring I have it 5 hours, didn't like".
Also skip "it looks terrible" crowd, game self-adjusts quality to maintain framerate so it works on a potato but looks terrible.

then I start doing some quests and exploring then I'm like ohh I want to make a ship then I explore in my new ship then a space battle happens and the space battles are fun when you get the hang of it then you start building an outpost looking what materials I need and how to link them together, so it's all automated and trying to make it look good and next thing I know I'm 70+ hours in. I can tell you that this game if you give it time and do side quests and explore and go in with an open mind you will have the time of your life
but of course it's not perfect and yes it does seem a bit short plus (but that could also just be because I had such a good time that it seemed short) there are a few bugs I've encountered and yes they can be annoying but once you get past it its fine again, and I have crashed 2 times but other than that I've had an amazing time and I have like 8GB graphics card and 32GB ram and an i7, so I don't have like an extremely expensive pc, and I'm happy with the game and there just so much to do also I've never hit a planet boundary I know that most content creators and other people are complaining about the loading screens and planet boundaries, but I explored a planet for a good 1 to 2 hours and never hit it but of course I didn't go in a straight line, but personally I don't think it's an issue most people are not going to encounter the boundaries unless they are trying to.
And the loading screen aren't a problem most games have some sort of loading screen in them even most games today and this game is like 100x bigger than most games, so it's kinda expected yk.
I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to have fun and yes it's my new fave game and I didn't sleep for 2 days because I was playing this game.

Bethesda has knocked it out of the park again with their latest epic.

If you know anything about Bethesda, you know that they don't do small. And let me tell you, Starfield is the BIGGEST game they have made. All of their previous games combined could fit on the smallest moon in this well-crafted galaxy. But it all starts with YOU, the player. One of the first thing you will do in Starfield is decide who you want to be, and the possibilities are endless. You can customize every little detail about your look in Bethesda's best character creator to date. Then you may pick from a large variety of backgrounds that provide you with starting skills and unique dialogue options throughout the game to really play your role. You can also pick three special traits that impact rhe entire game. Some provide new content to interact with and some give you powerful bonuses with drawbacks. But you're not locked in to anything. If you don't like your traits, there are immersive ways to remove them. For example if you picked the trait that gives you a mansion to live in but also a hefty mortgage, you can allow the bank to foreclose so that you don't need to worry about it anymore. You can practice and level up any skill you want regardless of background, so you can truly do what you want.

And there are over a thousand planets! About 10% of them feature native life and biological ecosystems to interact with, while the majority are "barren", as they are in the real universe. Don't worry; you are able to tell from a simple menu whether a planet has what you're looking for before you even decide to land on one, so your time will never be wasted. But even those barren planets are full of things to explore. Outposts of homesteaders, abandoned facilities, fascinating natural geological phenomena, and of course abundant resources realistically scattered across even the "deadest" planet. You can even build your own outposts with a surprisingly deep system to extract and transport resources automatically, craft powerful items, or just relax and read a book after a long trip across the galaxy. You can even stock them with any of the dozens of NPCs in the game that can join your crew, really making it come alive as they provide bonuses to its operations based on their skills.

Speaking of NPCs, this is another area where Bethesda outdid themselves. Cities are more alive and bustling than ever before, and there are hundreds if not thousands of unique personalities to interact with. If you've played any Bethesda game before you know one of the best features is the ability to join various guilds and factions that flesh up the world, enjoy their unique quests and storylines, and rise the ranks. In Starfield that is no different. Will you be a ranger, protecting freedom throughout the territories of the collective? Perhaps you will work for a megacorporation and become a cutthroat businesswoman or engage in corporate espionage to ensure your company comes out on top. Will you collect mysterious artifacts and explore the cosmos with a group of adventurers. Will you be an honorable member of the vanguard, defending innocents from pirates? Or will you be a pirate yourself, wreaking mayhem across the galaxy and taking valuable loot from ships in space? You'll meet all sorts of colorful characters along the way. Will they be your friends? Your enemies? Your victims? Maybe you'll even find love out there in the galaxy. The choice, as always, is yours.

Ah yes. Space. The setting of the game. Bethesda has masterfully crafted a galaxy and gives you the tools to truly do whatever you want in it. Space is BIG and you could fly for literal days between two planets in a star system if you wanted to, but thanks to a smooth and immersive fast travel system you can easily get to the action. Between star systems you need to grav jump, as the distances are truly astronomical. As you upgrade and customize your ship, you can increase its range to chart out the most distant stars. But be careful, there's danger lurking too. Pirates patrol the orbits of trafficked planets. You're going to need to be able to defend yourself, and that's where Starfield's masterful ship customization system comes in. Equip and upgrade lasers, ballistics, missiles, and more to dominate the skies, or keep it lightweight and focus on a speedy engine to fly circles around your foes in a dogfight. Build habitats for you and your crew to stretch your legs on your vessel. Make it yours. I would say the sky is the limit, but you'll be flying far above the skies!

This review has barely even scratched the surface of the things you can do in Starfield. The crafting, the crime system, the random encounters both in space and land, the impressive arsenal of weapons and space suits with gorgeous design and unique effects. I haven't even touched on the main story to avoid spoilers. I can't stress enough how well-realized this universe is.

    Just play Starfield. Now.

Bad: It is buggy at times, you will be in loading screens A LOT, planet exploration is repetitive, inventory management and other UI leaves something to be desired, you are in pockets of worlds and space that make the universe seem small. Also the Main story is uninspired in my opinion.

Counter point: However this isn't a space sim, exploration isn't really the focus of the game for better or for worse. I say this because if you just explore the game may seem empty, but if you focus on quests, which there are SO SO SO Many, then it brings life to the dead backdrop. Also some of these flaws like bugs are just Bethesda-esque and did not surprise me at all.

The good: The planets, the cities, the unique encounters and quests are so fun that they bring the universe to life. The ship building, outpost building, the boarding of ships and space combat really do scratch that itch everyone who has ever dreamed of exploring the stars has had. The skill system and combat I think are great. The side and faction quests are some of the best they have ever made. I can't put it down. Despite its flaws, I think there is a lot of good in this game that I fully expect to play for a long long time.

Neutral: I am playing on Xbox Series X, I do not care that is 30fps, and that its bethesda graphics. It works for me. I acknowledge some people hate this. I don't think this should matter to anyone.

It is truly a Bethesda game that has not strayed far from its forbearers, if you expect a similar game to its predecessors with improved mechanics in some areas but lacking some Quality of Life improvements and fluidity, I think you will enjoy this game.

starfield is fun if you can live with a lot of fast travel. Some quests, especially the side quests as is usual with Bethesda, are really incredibly exciting and mysterious. I don't understand many of the bad reviews. After all, the game does a lot right and definitely has its strengths but also weaknesses and even smaller bugs. If you love games then you will also love Starfield.

    Don't get this game if:
You are not a sci-fi fan
Are very picky about NPCs (this is not a Planescape Torment story/character-wise)
    Bugs break your immersion

All in all, I am enjoying it. For me with mods, on a powerful PC, it is a 8-9/10 (some quests are very well written, others feel like ChatGPT wrote them tbh).

I belive this game will only get better with age (mods/patches/expansions), and if you are on the verge, it might be better to wait until bugs are fixed, and more and even better mods and dlc is out. It is a good game in it's own right, but I was expecting more tbh.

To me, this is a positive thing. No other sub-genre has given me more hours of entertainment value per title than the Bethesda RPG's. And, in the case of Starfield, they deliver this on a much grander scale than any of their previous titles. The attention to detail in the environments is phenomenal, if you take the time to visit and really explore the locals.

Outpost (base) building and ship customization, managing your crew, crafting and upgrading your suits and weapons, gathering resources, exploring and surveying planets, running cargo missions, fighting off pirates, and more are all available to keep you entertained. There's so much to do that the biggest challenge I've found is in deciding what to do next. Yes, "Choice overload" is the biggest downside of this game, imo.

Performance is, I would say, the game's second biggest downside. On my rig, I locked fps to 45 and have experienced smooth, stutter free gameplay. 45 is obviously not a very ideal fps, but it does work and it's not particularly a problem. Regardless though, I would definitely subtract points from the game for not performing better.

Overall, I would highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys a BGS rpg. If you liked Skyrim or Fallout 3 or 4, you will probably very much like Starfield. But if you didn't, you probably will not. And honestly, I don't see how anyone would have expected it to be any different than that.

In some area's the game feels like GTA in space, in some other like Fallout in space. Another cool thing is space combat and docking your ship, entering spaceships and killing pirates. I'm slightly disappointed in space travel, as the game doesn't seem to have seamless space exploration, but this isn't a major problem for me. I haven't experienced any problem with the tiles. The regions are massive, they feel as big as GTA4's Liberty City...in one of my play sessions it took me 40+ minutes to reach a space station on Mars...from the borders of Cydonia City....i expected the infamous boundary message but didn't. In all fairness, even seamless exploration is a topic of discussion, you can technically fly to planets if you want but it takes hours (there's an example of a Youtuber flying to Pluto, it kinda works..kinda doesn't..). Other things i love about the game, FPS/third Person shooting gameplay..ship building, base building, doing story missions & side-missions, exploring lifeless planets and taking photo's. The game has it all. I think Starfield is a great game but has some minor flaws..this is why i can't give the game a 10/10. My overall score for Starfield is 9/10. Expand

The roleplaying in starfield is not just limited to the role that your character plays within the story, the game allows you to truly be a person within a world. Baldurs gate 3 was a tremendous acheivement, but leaving the beat and path and being an employee of the world is not possible, in starfield all of it is possible. A game is not defined by individual design choices, it is defined by the sum of it's parts.

I dont care what the marketing was for the game or about features that people think every space should have. I care that I keep wanting to come back to a universe that is addictive and beautiful. No game is perfect but this one is almost perfect for me.

Bethesda has created amazing worlds for people to immerse themselves in; and Starfield is no exception. The visuals and animations are much improved from Fallout 4, with more dynamic facial expression and hand movements. The textures and lighting are beautiful here as well, with a really unique vibe. I can go and do so many different and wide-ranging things, live in a dream home, build my own custom spaceship, marry a character I’ve gone on interesting adventures with, build an outpost on a random moon, say hi to my parents, and join the military. Of course it’s a package deal, so both strengths and quirks are there. But it’s a bespoke game, one of a kind.

It's Bethesda being Bethesda, only in space. This is a game made for a certain kind of gamer, so your mileage may vary, but if that's your thing, Starfield delivers.

One of the best games of all times. It has a fantastic history, many and many side quests, advanced ship building, advanced outpost management, a really fun space combate and a decent FPS combat.

Really a masterpiece which will last for years and years to come.

Amazing game! I don't know what the other reviewers are playing but this is one hell of a polished Bethesda experience. I have not been so invested in a game since I was in my late teens early twenties (Skyrim). Just play it, it makes your keep thinking about it after your play session is over too!

Really enjoying it so far; loving the exploration, the ships and their customisation (not in any other space game that I can think of), and the graphics on the planets are quite simply breathtaking.

People love to hate Bethesda, because they make games that other "better" developers just can't manage; they make games that are fun and that soak up your free time, games that people play and play for years and years. This looks like it may be another one.

It's a bad game but it's so much better than cyberpunk 2077:

Starfield is a great game, sadly it doesn't have sex scenes for degenerates. - Starfield's launch is perhaps 10 times better than CP's launch, CP might fix the game 3 years later. - Starfield is not showing you fast-forwarded story and characters cut from the game 1h in. - Starfield's vehicles are very customizable, CP

    - Starfield's vehicles are very customizable, CP doesn't have any of that.
    - Starfield actually has multiple choices if you want to kill or ally the quest characters.
    - Starfield didn't promised multiplayer. CP cuts the multiplayer.
    - Starfield's world is detailed, even the most basic NPC have appropriate clothing for their role and they even react differently based on your quest and status where on CP is completely random.
    - Starfield's loot in buildings make sense to their rooms where CP just have it randomly like the NPCs.
    - Music is the generic, overall CP has better.
    - Story is ok, fits and plays way better than in CP. Again, 'play' not 'watch'. In CP your character's status stay the same. In Starfield you obtained a 1% rank in the whole city, taking a job from a random cop, he will look up to you not down like in CP. Story in CP? Dystopian future where governments and companies have almost total control allow a rockstar drunk boy to operate a heli and nuke to blow the city. You guys don't understand what a dystopian world actually means, unless CP's story was poorly applied, because there's a book I believe.
    - Combat is fine, CP wins, they have dismemberment and melee feels better.
    - Skills own in Starfield, actual RPG game, where CP rapidly changed to an adventure game.
    - Planets are cool compared to No man's launch state, no I don't wait 10 years for some liars to deliver a game, but that's ok, the 500 people that rate 3/10 which means the game isn't a functional game will wait even more.
    - Starfield will have a DLC, CP promised free dlc, but yet we paid full 60$ for a broken and hollow game in order to pay another 30$.
    - Performance is bad, 60 fps, 1080p, at best on medium settings 2080, but that's ok, I will upgrade to 4090 just for this game. All this possible because of these lovely haters who probably lie about the fact of 'playing Skyrim/Fallout' in the past'? CP wins here.
    - Starfield is not on PS5, but CP still loses as that game was horrible and updates were required for it to be playable.
    - Starfield offers a really neat New Game Plus, CP offers.. a cutscene.
    - Starfield offers apartments and mansions and your ships, CP offers 9, after 2 years after launch.
    - Starfield companions they are helpful with loot, carrying and even with the dialogues.
    - Starfield doesn't offer sex scenes, that's ok, we leave that to degenerates.
    - Starfield's police system is way better than your cop donut eater spawning next to you, there's also a bounty system.

I have 60 hours of only doing quests, and still have left I assume a third of the game to go regarding questing and after that comes new game plus.

Starfield is a great game, sadly it doesn't have sex scenes for degenerates.

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
