This made the game unplayable for some people, and it also diminished the overall experience for those who were able to get it working, Starfield still feels unfinished and unpolished. The facial animations are stiff and unnatural, the AI of the non-player characters is rudimentary, and the game world is often empty and lifeless.
Repetitive quests: The quests in Starfield are mostly repetitive and uninspired. They often boil down to fetching items, killing enemies, or exploring the same few locations over and over again. This makes the game feel tedious and boring after a while.
Lack of innovation: Starfield is a derivative game that doesn't do anything new or groundbreaking. It feels like a rehash of other Bethesda games, such as Skyrim and Fallout 4. This lack of innovation makes Starfield feel stale and outdated.
Overall, Starfield is a disappointing game that falls short of its potential. It is buggy, unpolished, repetitive, and unoriginal. If you are looking for a good space RPG, then there are better options available.

The dialogue is really really weak and cringe most of the time. The water is the worst in the most recent games, there is almost no ripple when you swim or shoot, cyberpunk blows this game out of the water :^).
Ohh and the bugs, hooooly you can get stuck on starting planet, enemies don't spawn, you can fall out the map when you pick up new weapons, enemies teleport around you when they spawn like police in Cyberpunk. Maybe the modders will be making the game decent over the years...

    - Horrible UI - Enemy and friendly AI that gets stuck in walls, stop moving, fall through the floor and regularly bug out.
    - Extremely basic ship combat.
    - Absolutely terrible performance with nothing in the game to justify why that is, since it doesn't look that much better than fallout 4 that runs far, far better.
    - NPC faces look incredibly bad at times.
    - Claims to be a "next gen" game yet doesn't even have things like ray tracing.
    - The majority of the companions are annoying

The main thing for me is the terrible performance for a game that looks outdated.
Theres no big background simulation like in the X games that justifies CPU usage, not is there next level lighting, shadows or effects that justifying GPU usage.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. OMG, this game is bad! Honestly, I don't even know where to begin. The graphics are outdated, the gunfight gameplay is awful, the performance is terrible, the physics is bad, the world is ridiculously FAKE huge, and everything involves fast traveling.

You want to go from New Atlantis to Mars, right? The Atlantis town and its area are one level, outside the planet is another level, the space between the two planets is one level, close to Mars is another level, and inside Mars is again, another level. So, going from one planet to another requires at least four or five levels to render! Sure, you can fast-travel to Mars from the map, but I'm just saying, why would they create so many levels when your game engine is outdated and not optimized for this?

I wanted to simultaneously go from one planet to another at a very fast speed, and I didn't care if it took one hour and like fighting with other ships in the middle of the way! I wanted to simultaneously enter a planet from its atmosphere and then land on it. By the way, where's the town's map? Who at Bethesda came up with this revolutionary idea of NOT designing maps for towns? It's **** stupid!

What about the bugs? The game completely shut down my computer three times just because I forgot to scan the planet for materials and resources at the first mission of the game. It was frustrating! I paid 100 bucks for this game, and someone told me the game is already cracked! Wow, seriously? Are you telling me that Bethesda didn't even bother to work with Denuvo to protect their game from piracy? I really want to talk about those promises Bethesda told us to deliver and many other things, but I want to keep this review short, so 1/10!!!

A lot of people say "it gets better 12 hours in", and not only should that justify suffering through 12 hours of slow-paced, repetitive gameplay, it's also not true.

Starfield sorely lacks that "oh **** moment, like fighting dragons in Skyrim, or Fallout 4's opening mission where you jump off a building in power armour and fight a Deathclaw. All there is so far is repetitive fetch quests, exploring the same handful of locations, and dull NPCs that drone on for far too long.

It starts really slow. 10 minutes of walking through a mine, touching an "Artifact" (yes, that's all they're called, no originality here) to get a 2001: A Space Odyssey-style vision, then you make your character. After that, you fight some pirates, get given a ship, go through a decent ship tutorial, then you're introduced to the core gameplay loop - land on a planet, scan some rocks, plants, and wildlife, find a crater, abandoned mine, or outpost, kill some human enemies (it is ALWAYS the same human enemies btw), loot what you can with your paltry carry weight limit, and repeat.

The gunplay hasn't changed since Fallout 4, and it doesn't have something like VATS to mitigate the clunkiness. Space flight is underwhelming - it's a glorified combat arena, if that. Fast travel is mandatory. Exploration is incredibly dull - once you've seen one abandoned mine, you've quite literally seen them all, both inside and out. Remember those random planets in the first Mass Effect that were squares of terrain with a handful of points of interest dotted about? That's planets in Starfield, only you have to walk for several minutes to get anywhere. I'd kill for a vehicle to cut out the monotony.

I've done a fair amount of the main quest, got my hands on some of the powers, which are similar to Skyrim's shouts, only you can't organically find them out in the world like you could in Skyrim - you have to find an artifact, talk to someone, get sent off to a random planet, THEN you can find the power. That whole process is just walking from one place to another, by the way. No epic boss fights or anything like that.

Enemy variety is laughable. In 20+ hours I've fought precisely 3 enemy types on the ground - humans (the most common), and 2 types of robot. Enemy AI is a joke - they'll stand there and let you empty your clip into them before reacting, or better yet, they'll run away. They love running away. There is alien wildlife, but you have to instigate the fight, and they're basically the equivalent of mole rats or brahmin from Fallout in terms of actually fighting them. Pretty bland, and space combat's not much better - once you've done the tutorial fight, you've seen everything space combat has to offer.

The UI is atrocious. Navigating menus shouldn't be this slow and clunky. I shouldn't have to cycle between three inventories (trader's, mine, and my ship's) to buy and sell - especially when it was all on one screen in Bethesda's previous games. There are no actual maps, making navigation frustrating. Why can't I eat a food item instead of picking it up first when Fallout 76 let you do it? You know something's wrong when Fallout 76 has better quality of life features...

But the questing's good, right? Wrong. I'm currently on the 7th quest for a faction. They have all been fetch quests where I've had to go to another building or planet, walk up to a crate or desk or computer, press a button, and that's it. This faction is supposed to be all about corporate espionage, and Bethesda managed to make even that boring as hell. The most interesting quest for this faction was the first one where I had to ORDER COFFEE. Why was it interesting? Because someone tried to kill me. I shot him once and that was it. The rest have involved no interaction with other NPCs at all. This is in Neon, by the way - the cyberpunk-looking city - and it genuinely feels like I'm playing a really ****ty version of Cyberpunk 2077. That would make Akila a ****ty Fallout, I guess...

I can't help but feel like I'm playing a different game to everyone else, because so many people claim to be having a blast with this game. I don't understand what they're finding so fun about it. I'm just bored. I'd rather go back to Skyrim or Fallout 4.

Oh, and it's crashed 11 times for me, so far. And don't believe the lie that is "it's Bethesda's least-buggy game". It's second only to Fallout 76 in how buggy it is. There's a bug that stops the main quest progressing, for crying out loud!

The only positive is that the ship builder, despite being clunky, is really good. Shame you can't do much with the ships.

Like I said, I wanted to enjoy Starfield. It just doesn't want me to enjoy it. I genuinely wonder if I'm playing a different game to everyone else who claims to be loving it. I want to play whatever version of Starfield they're playing.

•Empty Worlds - empty and boring worlds - resembles "No Man's Sky" at the very beginning.
    • Textures in some places are carelessly stretched. There is no clarity in the procedural generated worlds.
    •Lack of transport for movement.
    •Poorly implemented points of interest.
•The BETA version is given out as a full-fledged product!

A sad trend in the modern gaming industry!

I played starfield on PC & genuinely did not like it. Its an empty shell when compared to a game like skyrim or even oblivion in some aspects. Only the Xbox fanboys are hyping up this mid game is cuz its not on Playstation.

The graphics are from 2014, the gameplay is janky and not good, the NPCs are dumb and ugly, its chock full of loading screens & exploration is unrewarding and not fun.

Not to mention there's woke sh!t in it as usual. Also remember back when there was only either male or female option? Well now you get to choose not only gender but also your pronouns! Yay!!! In my opinion, it deserves a 3/10 but I'll give it a 1 cuz of the way these shills have been praising this crappy game.

Such a meh game. Can’t even fly down to planets, so much for a space game where planets r just flat picture boxes. Zones on planets have boundaries so it’s not explorable. Just another tod Howard lies game.

It was a number of different things that made me give this game a negative review instead of a positive one. I was stockholm syndromed into thinking I loved the game and I did have a lot of fun when playing but then I just hit a wall that made me look at the game differently.

Exploration felt quite boring to me. I found the procedural generation not great and after 'exploring' multiple planets I just got sick of going in the same buildings, killing the same enemies and getting almost the same type of loot items again and again. I even got some of the same caves and bases with exactly the same terminal logs and environmental storytelling on multiple different planets.

I pretty much gave up on surveying after my second time since I found it mind numbingly boring having to run the distances in between the POIs and everything that needed scanning. It doesn't help that a lot of the landscape started to feel the same no matter what planet it was I landed on.

At first I really enjoyed the quests but as I did more and more and actually thought about the previous ones I realized that a massive number of the quests are quite simplistic and are basically just fetch quests or going somewhere to kill/persuade someone.

Can't really speak much for actual choices in the game. From what I saw the world doesn't really respond to your actions much and your actions provide little impact with the actual outcomes of quests. For me the choices in Starfield feel like the choices in Fallout 4. They are there to give you the illusion of choice but in most cases you are still going to progress to the same outcome regardless of what you choose. Starfield does do this better though and its not so obvious as it was in a game like FO4, I think having a voiceless protagonist is a big reason why it's hidden better.

As well as these things the game doesn't have much character for me. No edge or anything like you would get in the Elder Scrolls or Skyrim. It just feels incredibly vanilla and like Bethesda didn't want to take any risks or rock the boat. Even FO4 was better for me in this regard since it had the character of the Fallout universe/lore to back up the bad parts of that game.

I grew up playing RPGs and it basically didn't feel like an RPG for me but a looter shooter with RPG mechanics. My short summary of the game would be that Starfield is a slightly better version of a Ubisoft game.

It could have been a lot better by being smaller. I think that if Bethesda did a solar system or two with no more than 20 planets max and they were entirely handcrafted Starfield would be 10/10. I wouldn't even care about exploring whole planets. I would rather have a skyrimish size map per planet of handcrafted content than hundreds of the same repetitive tiles across hundreds of planets.

I wouldn't say don't get the game but IMO its certainly not worth the full price, let alone the price I paid for the premium edition. Wait for at least 6 months or a year and pick it up when its on sale and the modding scene for the game is more developed. Modding like in all BSG games will be top notch and likely produce stuff that is even better than the base game

The animations and graphics are just horrible, the faces are the things of nightmare and walking looks like some freakish marionette with a pole stuck up its nether regions.

Not sure how the ball was dropped so thoroughly here in terms of innovation.

Just like the procedural generation used to spawn procedural dull planets this game appears to be a procedural iteration of skyrim and fallout just like the dated creation engine it is based on.

The developers seem to be mired in the past and have created a boring walking simulator full of fetch quests which have one way of solving them.

I am trying to play and like it, however get bored out of my brain within an hour generally.

I expected a lot better and unfortunately these expectations were not met, particularly in the context of better games being released recently which do move gaming forwards.

Pick it up on a sale and hope that the modding community also picks it up, as it this point that is the only way this vacuous, dated edifice has any hope of looking or playing out with any sort of depth and content.

10 years in the making and 10 minutes of interest,

Indie devs put this to shame, this is like the reverse of the moon landing however, one giant backwards step for gaming and one giant leap backwards for innovation, graphics, content and care.

    3) Planets are boring. Magnificent desolation Todd says, well its more of the latter. Even the ones with life have only or or two reskinned boring animals. No ecosystems, food chains, or interesting biology. Terrain generation leaves a lot to be desire, Minecraft did it better. The points of interest are of few types and will start to repeat early on. Caves are small holes with some minor loot. Minecraft cave system much better.

After 30 Hours of gameplay what I got was an illusion of an open world, with instance based, linear story telling, talking simulator, while being in the "Largest world" and feeling the most boxed in I ever have felt in a game.

This guy broke down the gameplay loop FLAWLESSLY:

enter your ship - > loading screen -> sit at console and "take off" -> loading screen -> choose new planet -> loading screen -> select landing site on planet -> loading screen -> exit ship -> loading screen -> "explore" procedurally generated planet (kill a few bugs and scan some plants/rocks) -> fast travel back to ship -> loading screen -> go back to step one

Morrowind, Skyrim, Oblivion.. hell even New Vegas and 76 had WAY more explorative feeling to them. I'm just bummed, I really was hoping this was going to be the next Oblivion or Skyrim for me. I give it a 3. 1 for all the voices and characters in the game. 1 for not being a overly buggy mess. 1 for the times you DO get to fly.

And the funny thing is that normies think that this game is only reviewed negatively by PS fans (to whom I have nothing to do with)

    - Terrible optimization
    - Disgusting characters - looking at their crooked facial expressions from the Daggerfall era is simply unbearable
-Have you seen scary faces on minor NPCs?
    - Cheap and empty procedurally generated locations with several factories and caves
    - Arrived on another planet - loading, entered another room - loading, flew away from the planet - loading
    - Teleports between planets in a space game? Are you seriously?
    - Poor ultra arcade shooting with zero impact and cheap animations. In a game on the Morrowind engine, it is impossible to EVEN look behind cover. Just think about this nonsense
    - AI of the PS2 era. They don't hit, do almost no damage, and absorb trillions of damage. The combat of this game is completely depressing.
    - Lack of immersion - there is nothing fun about spending 3 clips on one soldier, while seeing the effects of blood flying out when hit. The developers just don't care. Police completely ignore shootings in the city
    - Dull lockpicking. After a while, hacking them becomes about as boring as shooting with stupid NPCs
    - Absence of any stage direction, action, cut scenes.
    - Cheap and unimpressive OST

Trailers revealed "ride" and "go" anywhere on the planet which is not ride, you cant land and fly the spaceship to a planet. You stand in a point and rotate 360, it's point click fast travel with loading screen and animation. even indie space games on the market have seemless spaceship control and you can fly even on the planet atmosphere.
You have spaceship which is basically loading screen animation, but no land vehicles (No you cant craft vehicle) so you have to walk 1000m of empty planet.

    Story:
Bland and uninteresting, comparing to their old title. In skyrim your head was about to be chopped of and in Fallout 4 your love got killed and child taken out, comparing to those this story is pretty lame.

    Gameplay:
Gunplay is same janky old creation engine gunplay with bullet sponge AI. Most of the AAA even AA and indies games has better gun play in their years old games. Seems like no AI or gunplay improvement even after 7 years of developement. they just add 4k space texture. No mechanics improvement. Some of the weapon customization is worse than fallout 4.

    Graphics and World Design:
Texture improved but light doesn't. so graphics feels dated. Same layout and monochromic color of caves and rooms feels boring after a while.
Planets are empty which devs say is realistive, but its empty in a repetitive way and planets got invisible wall so no you can't walk (which is already tiresome because of no vehicle and empty) through the entire planet.
Enemy variety non existent, level 10 enemy means it is a bullet sponge, bullet sponge enemy difficulty, sometimes entire mag of your weapon doesn't do any significant damage to human enemy. And yes no locational damage so headshot means same as body shot.
NPC and Character animations are so lifeless compared to other AAA, AA titles, facial expression non existent, its same old skyrim oblivion talking animation. No improvement.

    Bugs and Problems:
NPC dont react to gun, even in skyrim NPC reacted to weapon but here, NO.
Bugs are less than Fallout 76 which is horrible becuase common bugs of bethesda still exist, like NPC stuck or flying out through the texture
Too many loading screen, Its 2023 and even some doors have loading screen. Fast travel puts you outside of the door so that you can go through a door which is another loading screen.
    Your character get easily encumbered

    ***Pros:
Too ambious, sky, planets and moon looks amazing to gaze. spaceship and base customization seems ok. * you cant put one engine of spaceship to other tho. *you can create base on empty planets and bring your companion,
Game plays like a fallout 4 mod, so if you are a bethesda fan and fallout 4 fan you will get enjoyment.

There are other issuses too. like game is extremely slow place, your need 15-20hrs to get into, UI feels worse than fallout to me, just look at the title screen menu... I dont want to mention anymore.

Once you get in to the groove though, you quickly find out that the game contains much repetition broken up by the same loading screens, and that you are not as free as you thought you would be. Quests will be to teleport (quick travel) to a location that resembles the same as before it, walk a short distance, shoot the bodies in front of you, loot and return. You are unable to freely fly your ship anywhere you want, nor can you land anywhere on a planet that you want. In fact, if you land the same place twice, the planet will look different. The game procedurally generates a "random" tile to which you can walk, just don't walk to far because there are invisible walls. You can not even see the towns in the background. Gunplay is nice and tight, however quickly becomes underwhelming when you realize most weapons feel the same, but some with a zoom option. The enemies will not run for cover or show any signs of intelligence as you blast their faces off. Jumping and moving super slow .. because you know, gravity? .. This only adds to the frustratingly boring slow paced gameplay and story. Designing your own base or ship you would think would be fun, but it is not. The clunky system and process is tedious and is not rewarding. The level-up / reward / skill system seems interesting, but plagued by bugs and glitches as is the entire game quickly becomes the same... more annoying than rewarding. Overall, this half baked experience seems like it was pulled out of the oven way too soon. Gamers alike want to love it, as it is a popular release and set in space, what is there not to love? Unfortunately, this game falls flat on its face and feels more like multiple mini games stuck together with extremely long loading screens. Each as equally bad as the other. Don't even get me started on the graphics or inventory system, yikes! Expand

There are no city maps as well so you just have to memorize every single city and if you want to find something specific, you just have to go into every part of the map until you find it or try to look it up online and use clues from the picture to find the location. There are no markers to help you remember where things are very few fast travel points within cities. Even those aren't useful because it's not really clear where they are in the context of the map unless you memorize it. So basically if you don't have a mission marker, it's almost not worth the trouble. For me, I was willing to deal with the loading screens but this made it just not fun. In a game like Skyrim, you never had to fast travel anywhere and you would encounter plenty of enemies and discover lots of and side quest along the way. Often, I didn't mind this as you were leveling up and gathering a lot of loot. The gameplay loop was quite fun.

However, in Starfield you are always going directly from point A to point B so there isn't really much time to stumble into discoveries accidentally. Quest often will take you to 2 to 3 different planets which means 15 to 20 different menu screens to fast travel. You will also have to sometimes make multiple jumps to get to your location and then get stuck in some boring space battle.

I often found myself spending more time in transit, inventory management, and not being sure where to go then I did actually playing in the game. I suggest waiting another year or two until they fix it.

If you want a game about space/planetary exploration, then go play The Outer Wilds. If you want a game with space exploration that focuses on lore and base building, then go play No Man's Sky. And if you were just hankering for a great rpg regardless of the setting then, Baldur's Gate 3 is fantastic.

I did not follow the hype train for this game and honestly, huge miss by Bethesda.

Issues: -Story is meh. Any "choice" you have is super clear and only 2 options. Other games like Baldur's Gate 3 do a MUCH better job at this. The story system in this game is NOT next-gen. -Graphics: Other than the initial player creation, graphics are Fallout 4 "polished", even on Ultra on an NVIDIA RTX

-Gameplay: 1) Too much fast travel and loading screens, break immersion 100% 2) Planets are barren and copy/paste. 3) Gunplay is better than Fallout 4, but still lacking compared to other current gen FPS. 4) Ship gunfights are clunky and not fun, No Man Sky does WAY better. 5) Ammo is non stop always out.... 6)Hitboxes are horrible, Skyrim had better DPS/Hitbox/Registration

I really wish this game was fun to play but after 10 hours I am over it. True "next gen" RPG's like Baldur's Gate 3 are the new bar, and this was a huge miss for Bethesda.

I'll be honest, the game is a 5, maybe even a 6 out of 10. But I'm giving it a ZERO on account of Bethesda's LONG history is messing things up.

I'm done with giving them a free pass. This game feels old and is very, very bland.

I can't remember being this bored in the first few hours of a videogame in a long time.

It's not like this game has a story or characters that compensate. Calling the writing mediocre would be more than a little charitable. You're surely gonna be rolling your eyes more than just a few times at some of the characters and dialogue.

There is of course an argument to be made that modders could improve things. But there's only so much those poor modders will be able to fix, especially when the game is already so resource intensive. Quite frankly, I think even they would be better served modding games with better foundations.

Probably the worst release from Bethesda so far. A bare bone skeleton of a game waiting for modders to make it interresting, for free. I see what you're doing here B. Waiting a year until it's been modded into oblivion to sell it as a GOTY.

Only managed to play it for 56 minutes before I got bored and got a refund. This game is not optimized for PC. I got a headache trying to get it to stay in Fullscreen mode. The facial animation are cursed. The Combat AI is about infant level and I refused to shoot at children. Load screen after load screen after load screen!!! This is Battlecruiser 3000AD 2.0.

Despite the anticipation and promises from Bethesda, Starfield turned out to be a bitter disappointment. The game, unfortunately, falls victim to various major issues that could have been mitigated had proper time been devoted to development and testing.

Firstly, the game is riddled with bugs and glitches that seriously affect the gameplay experience. While it's common for new large-scale games to have some minor issues, the sheer number present is staggering. Not only do characters and objects sporadically clip, but weapons and tools occasionally fail to work, leading to frustrating experiences.

The vast, open-world design of Starfield seemed promising, but now it feels empty and lifeless. The explorative nature of the game is hampered by repetitive content and a limited number of meaningful interactions. Many planets appear to be mere copy-pastes of each other, with similar textures and layouts creating a monotonous experience.

Moreover, the storyline is convoluted and underwhelming, leaving players frustrated as they struggle to follow the plot. The narrative is poorly paced and filled with underdeveloped characters that make it hard to feel invested in the story. The dialogues, a key part of any RPG, seem lacking and generic compared to previous Bethesda titles.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
