How could such a hack be done? I am sure that the game was originally planned as an MMO in space, but after the failure of Fallout 76, they began to remake it into a single player. I don't like Skyrim and especially Fallout 4, but at least the locations were made by hand.
But thanks to Starfield ive gave the ME Andromeda the second chance, and Andromeda not so bad compare to that masterpiece.

It's the most underwhelming game I've played since "Redfall" (another Bethesda disaster). You can like whatever you want but the combat (space and ground) is generic AF, it's chocked full of loading screens, and the menus are clunky. That's not even getting into all the technical issues (past having no working HDR10 support on PC at launch in 2023).

There's no warning that your ship's shields have dropped and you're now taking hull damage apart from taking your eyes off of combat to look in the bottom right corner of the screen. The game has lock-on missiles, but doesn't bother to tell you if there's any way to avoid those when fired at your ship.

The characters are more annoying than anything else, nearly constantly criticizing anything and everything you do. "Why do you have to try to carry everything?" "We're not going to help this person are we?" "Glad you're finally done sleeping." Jesus Christ Bethesda, if I wanted to get nagged in my down time I'd move back in with my mom.

Avoid the game until the modding community fixes most of it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game, for me, is just a gigantic disappointment. I remember Todd Howard talking about the moments were the player "discovered" the world of a game, like exiting the Vault in Fallout, and how they made Starfield with two of those moments, one for discovering your world and the other for discovering "the universe". That got me hypped... They showed the ship customization and all that incredible stuff... But when I've played the game and found out that the "space exploration" was fast traveling... Yeah... Niiiiice... Didn't knew I was "space traveling" since Skyrim.

Besides that, the gameplay is just generic... It's an generic FPS. Nothing special, really. No VATS, no finishing move, no nothing... You go, you shoot the enemy, the enemy is like a bullet sponge, at some point it dies... Yay, innovation at its peak.

The NPCs are just boring... The animations and voice acting are just bad. I wouldn't be surprised if in a few years they come out and reveal that it was all A.I. generated. And one of them, spoiler warning, jump to the next paragraph if you want to play this game, wouldn't stop following me until I finished a quest I didn't signed up for. I was going to go with him retrieve an artifact from some place in a planet called Akila. Arriving there the bank was getting robbed. I just said to the guard "I'll keep that in mind" and tried to move on. The mayor started talking with us and there was NO WAY of not getting involved, of not helping them, not being the "good guy"... I tried, but the freaking space cowboy steps up and say "my friend can be your solution"... I don't want to be the solution. I left the planet and tried to move on to other quests, but the space cowboy wouldn't stop following me until I've finished it's quest. I've tried to kill him, it was impossible. I closed the game, uninstalled and went back to Baldur's Gate 3, a real RPG.

This game is just garbage.. I was going to give it a 3 out of 10, but as I was writting I just noticed that it is a 1 out of 10 at best. Mods probably will save it at some point, but man... This is just sad. Never buying a Bethesda game before trying it for at least 50 hours.

If you want to play it, go for it... If you're after an awesome RPG, just play Baldur's Gate.. Or other Bethesda games if you haven't tried them yet. TES Oblivion and Skyrim, or FO3, FONV and/or FO4 are waaaaaaay better than Starfield. And way cheaper too.

The studio is best known for unforgettable experiences.

Now Starfield is a whole new beast. It's not the type of game you measure by play hours.
but rather by individual stories and discoveries. You've got to play it at your own pace.
like the explorer the game wants you to be.

If you have the right hardware, the game can push out some of the best visuals I have ever seen.
The designers over at BGS have created the world with mindbogling detail especially on space stuff.
The art style is a breath of fresh air.and sets a more realistic tone for what humans can achieve
    in the not-so-distant future.

A galaxy full of stories and history that feels alive and gives you the impression
that everything can happen at every turn.

    Cons :

I would like space travel to be more fluid and make me feel that I am actually traveling with my ship,
not a sim,but not constantly having to go through menus to go somewhere.

Slow UI and complicated menu navigation that doesn't feel very intuitive, although developers
have implemented a lot of quality of life stuff, like being able to sell directly from the ship inventory, and others.
The Fast travel option is ok due to the nature of the game but traveling between planets could have been more than just a loading screen.

    Conclusion :

There is a kind of romanticism about BGS worlds and stories. A sense of noble endeavors that we like so much, and Starfield may be the best one yet!

A big thanks to the moding community for elevating the game from day one!

    10/10: Another unforgetable experience.

This game is one big mess. It looks like an antique and still has very high hardware requirements, be prepared for 30 frames on good hardware. Title: A Disappointing Descent: The Last Bestheda Game Review

Starfield is a game that promised so much but ultimately falls short in almost every aspect, leaving players with a bitter taste of disappointment. From its lackluster gameplay to its uninspired story, this game feels like a mere shadow of what it could have been.

    Underwhelming Gameplay:
The gameplay in Starfield is a mixed bag of mechanics borrowed from other, better games. Combat feels clunky and unpolished, with awkward animations and unresponsive controls. The open-world exploration, which is typically a hallmark of Bethesda games, is plagued by numerous bugs and performance issues that hinder immersion.

    Tedious Quests:
The main story and side quests are riddled with clichés and offer little in the way of originality. Players are often tasked with mundane objectives that lack depth and fail to engage the player's interest. The dialogue options feel meaningless, as choices rarely have any impact on the narrative.

    Technical Nightmares:
One of the most glaring issues with Starfield is its technical instability. Frequent crashes, game-breaking bugs, and long loading times make for a frustrating gaming experience. It's as if the game was rushed to release without proper optimization and quality control.

    Graphical Stagnation:
Graphically, Starfield is a far cry from the standards set by other contemporary titles. The character models are bland and lack detail, while the environments lack the breathtaking beauty that players have come to expect from open-world games. The art direction feels uninspired, and the game world lacks the visual diversity that would make exploration worthwhile.

    Empty World:
Despite being an open-world game, the world of Starfield feels strangely empty. There are vast stretches of land with little to no meaningful content, leaving players with little incentive to explore. The lack of interesting NPCs and settlements further exacerbates the feeling of emptiness.

In conclusion, Starfield is a game that fails to live up to the expectations set by previous Bethesda titles. It's a perfect example of how a promising concept can be marred by poor execution. With its unimpressive gameplay, technical issues, and lack of innovation, it's difficult to recommend this game to anyone looking for a fulfilling gaming experience. Bethesda must take a hard look at its development practices and prioritize quality over profit if it hopes to win back the trust of its once-loyal fan base.

Let me start with what I like.

Graphics looks pretty darn good, by and large. There’s some weird anomalies like the wide eyed stare, and there are visual glitches. Some planets look a bit weak but those total 5% of what I’ve seen. The other 95% looks great - textures and models of all the gear, the human built environments, all beautiful.

Voice acting is usually ok. There’s a lot of cartoony over the top voices that sound like sarcasm. Music is beautiful. It all loads pretty fast on my Series S, thank goodness because of the many loading screens. I don’t think I’m out of the first act of the main story but I’m following along, enough - it’s fine!

Already from my positives though you can see it’s not blown me away really.

    The bad:

The games mechanics are confusing, it is taking me forever to understand how I store, trade, keep, upgrade, etc all the gear. Hard to understand menu navigation when traveling, hard to understand how to survey planets (I spent 2 hours on my first planet going in circles until I regretfully looked up help online. There are annoying enemy bugs where they clip through walls; they get me but I can’t get them. They blend into the environment too much; the areas colors are usually just 2-3 main similar colors, and muted and muddy. Many times I can’t see the enemy because they wear those same colors plus all the smoke hides everyone.

I hate getting around. We are given an entire universe, but no great way to traverse it. Menu systems for ship travel are complex, confusing, and convoluted. Opening up a menu, selecting a planet, traveling, getting to the planet, but not actually landing on it, opening the menu, again, selecting an area on the planet, traveling again, watching the cut scene of the ship landing… terrible. Sometimes the planet needs to scan you for contraband, other times, not. Sometimes you can leave directly from being docked, other times you have to undock yourself. When you’re on the planet, you can’t run for long without running out of oxygen, that can run out even faster if you’re over encumbered, and when you’re over encumbered, you can’t fast travel. There are no vehicles. And you are running around these empty planets with nothing really interesting to do or look at as you make your way to the one area to get an artifact, or special ability or resource/trait. You can fast travel back to your ship… but only if you aren’t encumbered.

Characters talk over each other all the time. The gunplay has been a struggle. Aiming either feels like I am pulling the cursor through syrup or it has a booster engine and shoots my crosshair across the screen if I barely touch it. I’ve tried so many aim sensitivity settings but I think I am making small improvements only because I am learning to work within these confines. I have yet to find much ammo for one of the guns I really want to use.

Speaking of guns - what the actual EFF is with the lack of automatic ammo pick up? To get ammo for your gun, you have to pick up a gun that uses the same ammo. The ammo will automatically show up on your HUD but now you have to do something with the gun. With such limited inventory, I am dropping the guns all the time, and it really slows down the momentum of the game. . After spending 15 minutes walking in a slow straight line across a boring empty planet, when I finally find enemies to shoot, I don’t want to spend most of that time opening my menu to drop guns. Even a game considered one of the most realistic, RDR2, allows you to just walk near an enemy and the ammo is automatically picked up.

There is some good, but at this point there isn’t enough good to make me want to leave the main story again. At the moment, it’s entertaining enough that I will continue the main story for now, but I have a lot of other games I want to get to and star field has felt more like it’s stealing my time more than me enjoying my time with it.

How the hell is this underperforming you ask, well let me tell you, a garbage game engine and lazy optimization.

Let's get passed the stuttery immersion-breaking performance (with DLSS and optimization mods - not much of a difference). Next, I would like to invite you to Bugfield gameplay:
    * Objects spinning out of control.
    * Companion getting stuck on terrain.
    * Objects clipping through doors.
    * Jetpack appearing as if from nowhere, and disappearing when you stop using it???
    * Headless NPCs in conversation.
    * Invisible companion NPC in scripted conversations, probably still stuck somewhere...
    * Bugged enemy AI - Shooting the floor, taking cover while half of their body is open (literally my 8-year-old cousin is better at hiding).
    * Bugged space combat.
    And many many more.

In terms of gameplay, most of it is spent in menus either playing the inventory accountant or "traveling through space" by basically being teleported everywhere...
Oh, and when you land in a city for the first time, the game doesn't have a map, so good luck finding store locations.

This game literally insults your intelligence by trying to waste your valuable time with random tasks like fetch quests. 0 innovation whatsoever.

Do yourself a favor and avoid this trash altogether and go spend your valuable time playing something else.

The promised open-world exploration falls short of expectations, and the generated environments lack depth and character. Moons and planets within the game serve essentially the same purpose, featuring reused missions and assets. Had this game been released years ago alongside titles like Skyrim and Fallout, it might have found its place among the cookie-cutter RPGs of that era. However, when compared to modern RPGs, especially with titles like Baldur's Gate, this game feels lacking and leaves much to be desired.

To start the game is lots of fun when it is working and there are a lot of new interesting things to do in this whole new franchise. On the other hand it feels as if Bethesda has taken so many steps backwards.
This game is poorly optimized and relies on mods to get stable FPS and performance even with a top of the line GPU. Players running on lower end setups may need to shell out hundreds of dollars just to have a playable and stable product, while so many others in the industry are able to optimize games for multiple levels of PCs.
The AI in this game might be the worst of any Bethesda game to date you can shoot around them or aim your weapons and they wont even react, even when you damage them sometimes they still don't react. This takes away so much from the game there is nothing more uncanny then attacking and NPC and just having them stand there like nothing is happening. The AI in Morrowind from 2002 have better reactions to the AI in Starfield over 21 years later, I was really hoping that Bethesda would've taken the leap to improve their AI but they have gone back over 20 years with the release of Starfield.
The way the game was advertised and marketed by it seemed that space travel and exploration would be focal point of this title. The exploration is very underwhelming to say the least, the planets are barren and the chance to see the same generated structures are high which further ruins immersion when you are on one planet and see the exact same structure in the exact same place on a planet 5 systems away. Even Minecraft has better procedural generation.
With my main negatives aside I think there is also a lot to enjoy about this game and something thats Bethesda nailed. I think that the voice acting and audio design are phenomenal the score really adds to that feeling of space and delving into the unknown. The main cities and towns are charming and have their own unique feel to them. The side quest are plentiful and very fun. The ship creation is a game within its-self there are so many possibilities and options when it comes to how you want to customize your starship. The base building is a great addition that I enjoyed in Fallout 4 its great to see it back in Starfield improved features.

After all that was said I cannot give this game a higher score than 5, it is mediocre at best, while there are many aspects that make it amazing there are equally as many that make it terrible.

The biggest problem with this game is that it doesn't know what it wants to be, it tries to cover all bases and falls short almost every single time. They give you planets you can't explore, a ship you can't really fly, and shallow companions with almost no personality. The big question I have is why would you play Starfield when you could play literally any other space game out there.

A feeling of emptiness and filler.

25 years to make with the mechanics of a mobile game. This game is clearly unfinished, and the single most unstable port I've ever witnessed. Without the PC port issues there would be some fun to have, especially for a free game, but when the developer claims they made planets boring on purpose because space is boring, you can glean the reality that they even realize it is a mediocre offering at best. Beat the game in 10 hours with the mining laser as my only weapon. Played 30 more to see if it ever gets good. Too bad I can't get a refund on my time, because it remains utterly dull. I've never reviewed anything before, but micro-thesda needs to be held accountable for this fraudulent release. I can only imagine how those who spent 300$ feel. Expand

How many lies Todd Howard? Always trying to act like a snake charmer with ready-made answers for those who still believe in their promises, congratulations!!! You delivered another unfinished game with terrible AI, graphics, gameplay and poor performance, my artistic decision is not to play this mess, I will not upgrade to play an unoptimized game.

Antiquated engine, antiquated design. Snore fest of a story. Characters are as complex as ply wood. Bethesda, please take your engine out back and pop a couple Subsonic .22s into it. Having delved into the much-anticipated game, Starfield, I've come away with some very defined opinions that might not align with the hype.

To be transparent, I rate this game a 6 out of 10. Some might argue that's even being generous. Although my experience might be skewed because I played on PC and it's evident that Starfield is a console game with an unsatisfactory PC port. It feels lackluster in supporting the features and standards that PC gamers expect, most glaringly, a user interface that is notably "console trash."

    Storyline & Quests
The main storyline is, to put it plainly, uninteresting. The narrative introduces a supposedly mysterious plot device expecting awe from the player, but it failed to elicit any such emotion in me. Additionally, the side quests and factions leave much to be desired, coming across as uninspired.

    Combat & AI
The combat system borrows heavily from Fallout 4, inheriting all its flaws. The enemy AI is far from competent, and the Companion AI manages to be even worse.

    Exploration & Travel
Considering the "open-world" nature of Bethesda RPGs, Starfield's space setting could have presented an interesting twist. However, the execution is flawed. There's an over-reliance on Fast Travel, turning almost every movement into a loading screen, void of the immersive 'warp jump' scenes one would expect in a space game. Planet exploration, while likely the core attraction for many, felt mundane. Interactions, whether with resources or NPCs, often lack depth and intrigue.

    Urban Exploration
Venturing into urban spaces has its share of disappointments. There are buildings of significance, like the abandoned embassy of an interplanetary organization, that are strangely inaccessible, a missed opportunity for world-building.

    Aesthetics
The game's aesthetic choices are perplexing. An example I vividly remember is the portrayal of space – it is wildly different from any conventional depiction, and not necessarily in a good way.

    Some Positives
To give credit where it's due, Starfield's lockpicking mechanism is phenomenal, standing out as the best I've ever seen in any game.

    Final Thoughts
Starfield isn't an entirely bad game. But juxtaposed with Bethesda's previous masterpieces, like Oblivion and Skyrim, it doesn't measure up. It feels like a missed opportunity, a space RPG that could have been so much more but falls short in numerous areas. While some might find joy in this game, I regret my purchase of the premium edition.

To players enjoying Starfield, I'm genuinely happy for you. This review is merely a reflection of my experience and by no means an attempt to belittle your enjoyment. However, for those considering the game, I'd suggest waiting. There's potential for improvement, perhaps through modders or DLCs, but as it stands, Starfield feels "super mid."

As a side note, after playing Baldur's Gate 3, the bar for RPGs has been raised significantly, making the shortcomings of Starfield even more evident. Current RPGs that don't adjust or evolve with the times might find themselves struggling in comparison. Starfield, in this landscape, feels like a step back rather than the leap forward many were expecting.

Would you like to play a dumb down version of No Mans Sky? How about we trow in a clunky old fallout mod? It might not be fun, but the graphics are really nice if you stand completely still. We even have heavy motion blur on by default!

Seriously though, the ads are dope, the game is not. Buy Baldors gate 3 instead, thats the real deal.

And this is how next-gen game looks like. The amount of loading screens is just enourmous and all game is just divided into seperate locations and all for what? Right, lack of gameplay and an attempt to make the game look like it is long and full of content.

Loading screen... Loading screen... You cannot fast travel while overloaded

Starfield? Seems like it is about space, well - you get only unbalanced space combat. So the only thing you need your spacecraft is.... to store and craft items. And maybe you want just to customize it and make it look nice, but try to figure out how the build mode actually functions because the controls are crazy.

Fast travel.... Loading screen.... Loading screen... Loading screen

Exploring planets? You do not get any normal exploration, you get 3 points where you can land on the planet, and even if you select this point it will just generate another location on the planet for you.

Loading screen.... Loading screen... Somebody shooting me in the space???? Loading screen...

Shooting looks and feels really bad, I also dislike that crosshair that is located in the middle of the whole screen - ugly, white, big and uncomfortable.

Loading screen.... Loading screen... Loading screen

But you do not understand, this is the next-gen game that has poor animations and effects but still require 4090 to stably play at least 60 FPS. Do you think it will not be enough? Well, with 4060 on high settings and 2k resolution the card is not even 50% loaded, so probably Bethesda needs to fix the optimization.. oh wait, players will create modes and will fix everything, forget about Bethesda, they did what they did and will not even try to fix anything. IT JUST WORKS.

Loading screen.... Loading screen... Loading screen

As Tod Howard said: "You may need to upgrade your PC" - and just never play Starfield

The marketing for this was like they were actually going into space, a technical marvel. Bethesda's writing and attention to detail are weaker than I remember... I just see amazing scenarios with lacking options, choices, and consequences in the design and fine detail. On rails.

It is also not okay to skip dlss support. It is even worse because it was very easy to add dlss. Given that ordinary modders get the dlss support done very easy. It appears that skipping dlss was primarily done to make AMD happy. So AMD is more important to bethesda than its own consumers. Than the game itself. Looks boring. People look like lifeless zombies. You know, thinking about it… take a couple things away and this game’s core gameplay loop would be possible in the 90s. So, GOTY 1999.

Terribly animated faces kills any entertainment from the dialogue, and inspires a feeling of loneliness.
Horrible enemy AI makes combat stupidly easy, I mean… I’ve actually found myself laughing during some of the combat sequences, perhaps some of the fans of the game will explain it as a planet specific thing where a lack of oxygen is causing the enemies to act more irregularly?

Basically, the core problem for me is the gameplay loop. It literally feels like a point and click adventure (hence 1999 GOTY). Loading screen, click, loading screen, click, loading screen, maybe walk a little (ooooo! exciting!) oh… loading screen, click, loading screen, walk, dialogue… with ‘tired faces’

Two things I have enjoyed however, the persuasion system is quite interesting - though I feel the dialogue options don’t really stack well. There could have been more work put in to make the persuasion conversation flow better.

And the music is good, love the jingle when you level up. But first time I did level up, during combat, I found myself almost embarrassed by the jingle’s attempt to inspire excitement, considering how much I was cringing already.

Concluding, the game is definitely not worth full price, considering what amazing developments in RPGs we’ve seen in 2023. But as part of the Xbox game pass, give it a shot.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
