The reality is that no company should be rewarded for stagnating in every aspect of their game development process and its end result. I like the game as I have liked previous Bethesda titles warts and all but I cannot in good conscience say it is a step in any direction except maybe a step back from previous titles. The engine they refuse to update looks worse with each new title released, better lighting and shadows, sure, but to me it just looks like lipstick on a pig. Endless loading screens instead of a seamless experience of exploration and true role-playing. NPC's and facial animations are a real disappointment after playing games like Witcher 3, Death Stranding and Baldur's Gate 3 and one of these is from eight years ago. Just nostalgia for Bethesda games shouldn't excuse their sloppiness. They have the massive backer that is Microsoft now so they really have no excuse (not that they had one before in my opinion) as a AAA developer to deliver such a sub-par product for 2023 while other much smaller studios with a fraction of their resources deliver something amazing both in looks and feel! Redfall is a monstrosity that never should have existed. Fallout 76 should have never existed. Now Starfield, a game that should not exist. Ever since they’ve sold out to Microsoft, it’s like they’ve been making games with these loony tunes looking graphics as it seems their new target audience is anyone under the age of 12. Nowhere does Bethesda warn you about just how one sided / woke they made this game. I have over 90 hours in this game so I feel like I have a good perspective of what Starfield brings to the table. Here's a summary:

    1. Almost every important NPC from most store owners, military generals / commanders, the leader of Constellation, the supervisor leading the mining expedition at the start of the game, and even the president of the United Colonies, are all women. When it comes to a position of power or leadership, females very obviously and deliberately dominate every sector. The only time that a white male character is in a position of real leadership, is the leader of the Crimson Fleet, one of the main villains of the game. It's very obvious the developers hate white males, as they are a huge minority. 2. You can tell just how "diverse" the developers are by looking at the random civilians and guards in every city. In 90 hours of gameplay, Most of the guards / soldiers have been either black males or females ( of all races ), and females do dominate the soldiers / guards as well. The civilians consist of both genders, but almost exclusively Black or Asian. It's very rare to find white males anywhere in any cities, and the only places I usually find them is either in the ghetto of every city, or working the mines. With the way the world is going today, this maybe seems like a not too distant reality anyway. 3. If you are religious and believe in God, you will be very disappointed here. This game actively tries to find some sort of "scientific facts" to persuade people into thinking God isn't real. None of the main companions believe in God, and the only one that comes close believes in the "great serpent", in which that religion is viewed as a cult by almost every NPC. 4. When you create your character, you can choose your "body type" and "walk type" between Male or Female, and then you get the privilege to choose your pronouns. You can either be a He, a She, or a They. This one I am not as bothered by as this only revolves around your personal character. You can be a straight male if you want ( Although every romance companion is Bi ). The problem I have with the pronouns is that the Left all say "pronouns are no big deal" but when someone creates a mod to remove pronouns in the character creation for people who don't want to participate in that either due to religion or another reason, are attacked by the Left for their personal preferences. Very hypocritical and selfish of them to force everyone to share their views or get attacked, even though "It's not a big deal". If someone is going to be paying all that money for a game, they should have the freedom to play it how they want personally.

    5. There is a Transgender main character in the game ( part of one of the main side questlines ), but they try to be a little more cautious about the wording on this in the game by calling them a clone. You are pretty much forced to support this character throughout the questline even if you have different beliefs. Overall, the choice to purchase this game is entirely up to you. If you are into everything I mentioned earlier, this game is absolutely for you. But for those that share different beliefs and views, I would highly recommend avoiding the game until they either make it more diverse without the white male oppression, or a mod fixes it. They deliberately hid this aspect of the game until people purchased it and played enough to the point of no longer able to get a refund, and that was the wrong approach from Bethesda. Why can't we have a modern game where people can express themselves without being forced to a single ideology that they might not agree on? In my opinion, this game has to be one of the most racist / sexist games against White males that I have ever played. The gameplay itself is very fun ( other than the limits on exploration ) and there is a lot to do in terms of side activities, base / ship building, combat, etc. So it's not all bad. It all depends on your own personal views. Would it have been great for them to support both sides? Absolutely, but unfortunately that's not how the world is going. For me personally, this game is a 0/10 as the world building is immersion breaking.

There's hardly any space in the game either, and everything related to space could have been removed, making it even better (fewer loading screens). In my opinion, it's not worth the money, at most $10. A better RPG was released recently. And most importantly, they spent their time on this when they could have been working on TES6 - it's disappointing (though there's not much hope for that now either). Mr. Todd, your game is not next-gen; it's just a creation on an outdated engine. Unlike you, users still have eyes. Expand

This is why enemies swirl around and constantly zip behind you. Bethesda was essentially hoping that players wouldn't notice they're just controlling a crosshair. In my first 20 hours, I was so bothered, by the fact that there were no ground vehicles, but now after 60 hours I understand, that there is no need for them because ground exploration is so uninspired and tedious. 99% of the planets you can travel to are barren, dull and exploring them might fix your sleep deprivation. At least the story and the different questlines are somewhat interesting and there are a few really awesome characters, but they might not be everyone's cup of tea. On the technical side, this game is absolutely disastrous. It's filled with unnecessary loading screens e.g. climbing up the ladder in your ship, taking off, landing, entering buildings and caves. The PC optimization is a joke especially since even the RTX 4090 + i9 13900K can't achieve a stable 60 fps at 4K without the help of DLSS/Frame generation. And then Todd Howard has the audacity to say "You might need to upgrade your PC" when people ask why the game wasn't optimized for PC. Calling this a "next gen PC game" is the farthest thing from the truth it feels so outdated in so many aspects especially the visual quality (even on ultra). You can keep calling people who criticize Starfield "Playstation fanboys" all you want and say reviews like this are "review bombing" but the game is just painfully average and has gigantic flaws. I seriously can't fathom how people are giving such high scores, it has to be delusion of the highest order. We need to demand better games and not just eat it up. As a huge Bethesda fan for many years, this one really hurts but, I know that the modding community will transform Starfield into an absolute masterpiece, especially since they have already made so many great mods after just 8 days. The main story is incredibly dull and short and while some side stories were interesting, the one that interested me the most simply wouldnt progress because a key NPC refused to move where they were supposed to, least buggy bethesda release they said, but the bugs are definitely still there.
The gunplay is passable, its not bad, but its nothing amazing when we had games like Doom, Destiny and Borderlands making gunplay so intense and fast paced, it certainly does not help that the AI is incredibly stupid, both the enemies' and your allies', with enemies main difficulty coming from how spongy they get at the higher difficulties.

Exploration....its lacking, first of all theres no actual space travel, i dont care if someone spent 7 hours to get to a JPEG of a planet, they couldnt land on it from space, they still had to use their spaceship as a fast travel hub, which is what it is most of the time, even when exploring the actual planets, theres only a few that are handcrafted and interesting enough to explore, the randomly generated ones are barren and have nothing of interest, which defenders of the game will say its because of realism, but that same realism is entirely forgotten when they get asked where are the ground vehicles, it is definitely odd that in a game with spaceships, we somehow dont have any form of ground vehicles for traversing planets quicker and the loading screens, this game has SO MANY loadings screens, you better have an SSD or half of your gametime will be on loading screens.

Theres potential, but its not quite there yet, i have heard of performance issues, however i had none on my rig, so i have no comments to say about that, pick this up in a year or two when the mods start to add the content it needs, until then, its a pretty big letdown considering who made it and the backing they had from microsoft.

I embarked on my journey in "Starfield," eagerly anticipating a revolutionary sandbox RPG, a worthy successor to the likes of Skyrim. Yet, standing in the shadow of contemporaries like Baldur's Gate 3, the experience has felt considerably linear and lacking depth.

My 15 hours of gameplay has been a mixed bag. Though I deliberately veered off the main quest to immerse myself in the game's world, the excitement waned rather quickly. A considerable number of quests felt more like chores, burdened by repetitive NPC interactions and monotonous mine clearances populated by the same enemy types.

The character customization, touted to offer profound choices, left a lot to be desired. I was particularly disheartened with the "Dream House" option - a promising feature that culminated in a bland and uninspiring dwelling with repetitive layouts and a glaring lack of attention to detail, quite contrary to the cozy, unique havens I cherished in Skyrim.

However, a game can redeem itself through compelling world-building, a feature I had set my hopes on, especially with the much-hyped City Neon. Unfortunately, it fell short, offering a rather superficial experience that failed to match the visual grandeur claimed by many. Despite running the game on a high-end setup, the visuals were not up to par. Moreover, the cities felt empty, devoid of the vibrant nightlife and bustling corners that usually bring a virtual metropolis to life. A lack of diverse amenities in New Atlantis, such as clubs or engaging recreational spots, added to the feeling of a shallow, underdeveloped world.

I am willing to give "Starfield" another chance, in hopes that exploring new aspects like building outposts can reignite the initial excitement. As it stands, however, the game has not lived up to my expectations, which, considering the advancements in RPGs over the years, I believe were justified.

    ➤ Boring writing
➤ NPCs/characters are robotic and lifeless, lack of depth.
    ➤ RIDICULOUS procedural NPCs models!
    ➤ PATHETIC AI!
➤ Starfield is extremely outdated and lacks attention to detail! Ex: First person is a floating camera without a body, Your character leaves no tracks on the ground, Vegetation without physics etc..
➤ Downgrade compared to Fallout 4: No crippled limbs, no dismemberment, no destructible armors, no wounds.

What happened to Bethesda? Did they really think the 1.000 generic planets with procedural generation system would be fun?

I have played Starfield for approximately 40 hours since the early access release. And I can't even call it a Bethesda game. Bad:
They gutted the exploration, added this leveling system that is constantly janky especially with the enemies (you may get clustered of level 5s with 75s), combat is marginally improved, story is no different than the usual almost A.I. type writing from Bethesda
I have played Starfield for approximately 40 hours since the early access release. And I can't even call it a Bethesda game. Bad:
They gutted the exploration, added this leveling system that is constantly janky especially with the enemies (you may get clustered of level 5s with 75s), combat is marginally improved, story is no different than the usual almost A.I. type writing from Bethesda games, graphics are Fallout 4 with massive heaps of duct tape to cover the issues. Space in this is a joke and should never have even been advertised. There are definite performance issues that I can only conceive as the reviewers being paid off to say they don't exist: heaps of buggy models, animations, and visuals. For the first 10 hours I was crashing every hour. Lots of walls can simply be walked through as well as some npcs getting glitched requiring you to reload your save. A.I. is also the worst yet from a Bethesda game.
Also, New Game+ is barely anything different than the main game.
    Good:
Some specific side quests are good and should have been the main story instead. Ending is definitely intriguing and I almost felt pulled by the story to figure it out until they do a B.S. handwave of most of the questions I had. The non-procedural worlds are much better and invoke some of the good times from Fallout 4. Cool system that allows photos taken in-game to be placed as load screens. There are a lot of things to do, but this leads into the issue of most of those things are dreadfully boring. Middling:
The dialogue will either captivate people or bore them because no one dares to express a solitary emotion that isn't subdued or muffled by low audio when recording their lines which leads to the music drowning them out at points. Music for me was just stock standard space tracks. I really don't understand the praise for it when most is very subtle rhythms that are too close to Fallout 4's. The 1000 planet situation... I've explored about 25 planets and after the 5th I started to encounter the same areas procedurally placed onto others again and again. This may be alright for some because there are quite a few variations but it wasn't doing it for me. Load screens are an issue but don't kill it. There are at times 4 loading screens to go through which may take between 2 to 3 minutes to complete. Much of the game is done through the menu and inventory system, more so than even Baldurs Gate 3 which boggled my mind. In the end it's meh, get it for free with gamepass if you got it already but definitely don't go out of your way to purchase especially the $70 version. I can't even recommend this for Bethesda fans because the ability to just walk in a direction to see what you can find is fundamentally not here which was paramount to my enjoyment of Fallout 4, which although I enjoyed, was very middling as well.

It follows from the first one - optimization. Well, she's gone. Graphene is here for 2023; frankly speaking, there are not enough stars in the sky. FPS drops where it would seem there shouldn't be any. I think this shouldn't happen on the 3080ti. You can imagine what's on the weaker cards. 3. Space and ships - well, idk, considering that all movements here can be made by pressing one button, then all this becomes as if it is not necessary, the only thing is that the ship can be used as a hub or warehouse. Flights in space, like battles, are boring. Floundering around orbit and not being able to fly somewhere far in manual mode is upsetting. 4. Loads for every sneeze - this is more of a complaint against the engine (I think so, maybe I’m wrong), all games from the gazebo suffer from this, but here it is elevated to an absolute. If in some Skyrim or Folych these downloads are found only at the entrance to buildings or caves, etc., then here they are everywhere. If you want to land - loading, enter the building - loading, take off - loading, boarding - loading, moving between city districts - loading, although it’s difficult to call local settlements and cities. There is no smell of seamlessness here. 5. Planets and content on them - but there is none, or there is little, basically it all comes down to grinding resources, clearing identical outposts. In all this time I haven’t come across anything interesting yet, maybe this is temporary. And they would provide transport to move around the planets, otherwise it’s a mess. 6. Combat - well, shooting was not the strong point of the gazebo, but something is really bad here, there is no recoil at all, you can’t feel hits at all, you have to constantly look at the corner of the screen where your health is indicated, in order to understand if they hit you or No. Well, and on top of everything else, AI is as infinitely stupid as space is infinite. There are positive aspects and the game cannot be called a completely bad one, but it is not a masterpiece or a breakthrough either. There are games about space a thousand times better. If you want exploration, riddles and adventures in space, you’re in No Man’s Sky, there’s a coop there, you can build a base and tame a pet, and all this splendor is without downloads, that’s where it’s seamless. If you want to tickle your ass, then go to Elite Dangerous or EVE Online. This is the best promotion for No Man's Sky and Elite so far.

As for Starfield, it was a complete miss for me,
Ai that was worse than their 12yr old skyrim game, horrible inventory, lackluster story, tons of loading screens, universe that feels completely dead, lack of space exploration, it is mostly just "load to the next planet" type gameplay, planets in most circumstances feels the same.
I had such high hopes for Starfield, kinda hoped for an epic space exploration type RPG, that would scratch my freelancer itch, but it was nothing like that.
And the Ai just felt insanely emotionless, no situational awareness with the story, buggy companions.
Just overall doesn't feel like a 2023 type of game.. it would maybe have been a success for me if it was released in 2005-2010.

This is a repetitive buggy mess , where frame rate drops in mid teens on series x .

Same repetitive quest , Same repetitive caves/ dungeons The loot and enemies are all in the same exact location in every mine Everything is copy and paste , Combat is horrible , Ai is the worse I ever seen , Missions are pointless. One such example I need to know how to make my coffee better

Missions are pointless. One such example I need to know how to make my coffee better so you gotta steal a tea recipe for the coffeemaker vendor , another mission is a receptionist lost a person’s baggage so you are tasked with finding the baggage which consists of a mug and I’d card ..

Companions are some of the worse ..

A laggy buggy mess the game has you think you’re literally teleporting Story is absolutely horrible which I beaten in under 6 hours!

Fractions are pointless where there is literally no consequence to your actions you can join opposing fractions ..

This is a loading screen simulator. Bethesda actually created a new genre of game ..

This is a fast travel simulator you can’t fly anywhere ! You think you’ll explore the stars nope you can’t leave orbit . You think you can land nope you can’t ,

Enter and exit your ship load screens ..

Ai standing on chairs , or gathered in clusters , wandering around aimlessly

No life in this game you actually feel you’re in a game you are pulled out of that reality . This is after 70 plus hours !! The game does not get better after 15 hours it’s the same dam thing !! This game is an utter dumpster fire. And unfortunately I can’t get a refund . For my collector’s edition . Ate dookie with Starfield . I hope this helps another user not make the same mistake as I did

But soon, you just can't take it anymore and quit, realizing you're just wasting time. While you might find a fun quest or activity here and there, they're short-lived and soon you're back to the boring parts.

This game tries to do a lot but fails at most of it, resulting in a pretty disappointing experience overall:

In its attempt to make a mark in the space gaming category, it falls flat in many areas. The spaceship is not very flexible and its movement options during the loading phase are limited, which diminishes the excitement. The worlds you can explore mostly feel empty or repetitive, featuring the same kinds of locations and enemies over and over. There are some artistically pleasing cities to visit, but exploring them is boring due to the poor RPG elements. The characters you meet there mostly just wander around with nothing interesting to say, a big step back from the daily routines characters had in games like Skyrim.

When it comes to RPG elements, the game also falls short. The missions feel too scripted and limited, preventing you from exploring different approaches and making you feel more like a puppet than a player with freedom. The story doesn't change much based on your choices, and the missions themselves are repetitive, making for a bland RPG experience. Even though it offers many missions, the lack of diversity makes the game feel small and uninteresting.

Comparing it to Baldur's Gate 3, another RPG, highlights the shortcomings even more. While BG3 gives you a real sense of influence over the world and engages you mentally with various ways to approach missions, this game doesn't. Here, your choices don't matter much and the gameplay is predictable, leaving you feeling more like a spectator than a participant.

Not to mention, there are also technical and optimization issues, along with frequent crashes that ruin the experience even more. The game not only falls short in terms of gameplay but also feels incomplete and outdated. It comes off as a less impressive version of Fallout 4 but with a space theme slapped on it, making it seem like it's lagging way behind in the evolution of RPGs.

Let's start with the fact that starfield doesn't do anything well/better than older Bethesda games. This game would have been good 10 years ago + the price of the cap is completely inadequate for the quality of the product. Such Daggerfall has more fun with exploration and rpg system than this abomination. Fallout 3 / NV are better in terms of diversifying the gameplay of exploration and character creation. Starfield can be described as everything and nothing, as if making a cake with the addition of salami and brawn, you can, but who will eat it. Expand

I've been waiting for a space RPG of this caliber - or at least what this tried to be. Two things really bug me: (1) Freedom/depth of movement (on ground and in space); and (2) Insertion of identity politics. Regarding the freedom/depth of movement: This doesn't feel as big as it could. It feels more "instanced" than I'm into. Not my cup of tea.

I recently had the misfortune of playing a game that exemplifies everything that is wrong with the gaming industry today. From the abysmal optimization to the developers' complete disregard for the gaming community, this game is a prime example of how not to create an enjoyable gaming experience. i'll take my score back if they optimize it

First and foremost, let's talk about the optimization—or lack thereof. It's clear that the developers did not put any effort into optimizing the game for a wide range of hardware configurations. The result? An unplayable mess for the majority of gamers. Frame rates drop to single digits, stuttering and lag are constant companions, and even the most powerful systems struggle to run the game smoothly. It's a disgrace that in this day and age, developers can release a game that demands a $1000 GPU just to achieve a somewhat acceptable performance level.

What's even more infuriating is the developers' apparent indifference toward the gaming community. It's as if they have turned a blind eye to the countless complaints and pleas for optimization. Gamers have expressed their frustration and disappointment, but their voices fall on deaf ears. The developers seem to prioritize their relationships with GPU manufacturers over the very people who spend their hard-earned money on their games. It's a slap in the face to gamers everywhere who expect a product that is accessible and enjoyable.

It's clear that the developers are more interested in showcasing flashy graphics to appeal to the GPU sellers rather than focusing on creating a game that is well-optimized and enjoyable for the average player. They have forgotten that games should be designed to entertain and engage players, not just to serve as a showcase for expensive hardware.

In conclusion, this game is a prime example of everything that is wrong with the gaming industry. The lack of optimization and the developers' neglectful attitude toward the gaming community are unacceptable. It's disheartening to see a game that prioritizes aesthetics over accessibility, effectively shutting out a significant portion of the player base. Unless the developers can demonstrate a genuine commitment to improving optimization and listening to their community, they are of no use to the industry. Save your hard-earned money and steer clear of this disaster of a game.

Its not a bad game but delaying TES6 and an infinite budget constant delays make it necessary to judge this game on the highest standard. And it fails on every check absolutely disappointing it might be worth getting on sale in 2 years after modders and several DLC are pushed out.

If I was to answer my own questions I'd say Bethesda simply do not have the talent anymore for these kind of games. I actually preferred Outer Worlds to this game and I never loved that game that much. Letdown of the year and back to Baldurs Gate 3 I go.

Hit a bug 8 hours in in the mission Into the Unknown that blocked my story progression entirely. Using commands to skip the mission meant I was permanently unable to equip powers and I refuse to start the game over again because the first 8 hours were already so mind numbingly dull. One of the worst video game experiences I've had in my life, do not buy this game.

The world interactions feel brittle and the loading screens are distracting. The dialogue often babbles across one another as you jetpack through the world. The starting city of New Atlantis is soulless and feels like a retail park on the outskirts of Croydon. I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
