These are all pretty minor complaints though, and when you consider the scope and quantity of amazing rpg content here they seem pretty minor. If you wanted this game to be Star Citizen/No Man's Sky/Elite: Dangerous then you'll be disappointed, but you'll also be disappointed if you want it to be Mario 64. Wrong genre, folks.

One thing nobody talks about is the story. I don't want to spoil it but while the start is a bit slow it really goes places I didn't expect - I highly recommend playing the main story.

TL:DR - Good a-rpg. Me like. Main quest made me feel things. Could use some updates.

I like Bethesda games and their special charm but it's just a Bethesda game no more no less.
If you like FO, Skyrim you can't go wrong with Starfield. Only here again much too much was promised on the part of Bethesda and Microsoft.
Whether it is now the best Bethesda game?
can be, but for me it is after 50h still behind FO3 and Skyrim.

It feels like this game was finished in 2019 and then sat on for a few years with a few things added over time. If someone has to invest more then 20+hrs into a game as other gamers have been "preaching" sorry but if a game can't hook you in the first hour either it be story or game play well the game has failed. There is nothing good to say about this game. Over priced for what you get. I paid for the early access played it for 3 Hours and was bored through whole ordeal. Best choice I made was getting it refunded. As for "current day" insertions seemed unnecessary. Don't waste your time or your money. Multi billion dollar company like Bethesda who got burnt by there last few installments should have learned not to do the bare minimum and release a faulty product and expect full price. Expand

This is so tiring to and how to break immersion 101: everything is fast ravel and loading screen...

I loved skyrim and fallout (76 never bought since it was **** ) series but this game is not even close to those games, and has so many problems. And please do not start me on all the goddamn loading screens and fast travel for everything that everyone else is blaming on "limitations" Games have been doing texture, map streaming and so on with no loading screens or barley any for a decade.

It's not like its "new technology" It's been here for ages. We all know what the reason is and that is Bethesda will never let go of their old and outdated engine.

I hope the game gets better for the others players that enjoy it, but i refunded it since this is no excuse to be like this on release and i am tired of Bethesda now and this was the last straw for me.

This game is a complete disappointment. I can't believe this thing is released in 2023 and by such a giant company with the insane financial power and expertise of Microsoft. Yes, it would be ok if it was the first game by an indie developer but you just can't expect people to like this messs!

Gameplay progress: It's insane how slow skills are being learnt and how miniscule the benefits are for some of the progression you invest your levels into. It will take you literally months until you get all the skills that might be useful. I am not talking here about locking of the content behind a skill wall!
Dialogue: You just have this feeling that you always succeed. At some point, there is no need to read whatever characters are saying, it's just going to be whatever way story writers decided. Yes, you can sometimes do things your way, but it might have no impact. If a character is critical – no way to kill him or her. No alternative exists.
Animation of characters: Are we in the early 2000s? Look at character faces and the way they speak, it's feels like moving plastic.

Pick any aspect of the game, and it just reads – OUTDATED.

Though the one IMPORTANT thing that I'll say that many people and streamers and journalists are too scared to say.. is the overrepresentation of women in all roles in the game. 87 hours and I've come across zero male bounty hunters they've ALL been women, 98% of security in the games cities, are women, you're lucky to see a male. It's a huge woke push for women to be represented putting men the in roles of the bad guys and push the good men to be side npc's to NPC's themselves.

It's exactly the woke you expect. The only thing they got right is giving women proper hair styles and not short blue or green hair.

Starfield is woke and until the modders can attempt to fix the woke ideology it's not worth playing.

There is a severe disconnect with the character: so you are a miner, boom ... now you are a chosen one. hmm .. really?

I also do not quite get the hype about its graphics. They are muddy and do not look good. It is not the complexity of the models, but maybe the design .. but much of it has severe last generation vibes.

On the technical side - no super wide screen support? .. for a game that prides itself on the vastness of space? Terrible, TERRIBLE UI (its a typical console UI - totally inadequate for PC)

    To sum it up:
    - mediocre graphics, especially human character models look 1 or 2 generations old
    - poorly populated "cities", its the ps2 era cities, where you never see too many people doing their days work. Even Skyrim had livelier towns. By and large .. i would compare cities to Fallout New Vegas.
    - good sound and acceptable voice acting (but not even close to Baldurs Gate 3)
    - there is NO feeling of space, you actually hardly spend time in "space". You click a point on the map and fast travel
    - there is no landing, no launching - nothing. It is all cutscenes - very disappointing. I mean .. look at ancient games like "Frontier" .. even that one had launching and landing on planets .. on a single 3.5 disk

all in all disappointing - but like every Bethesta game, it can and likely will be saved by modders

On a technical level, while I do not believe it is up to par with todays standards, I do believe it is a big leap for BGS. This game just feels annoying and empty to play. The loading screens and exploration bother me a lot. Exploring inside buildings feels like a headache instead of fun. I dont know what happened with this game. I have read other reviews of people who have put a lot more time than me and it makes me feel justified in not wanting to play the game more. To be honest, with a delivery like this, I worry about Elder Scrolls 6. I know they treat ES like gold but BGS has been lacking for me lately. Here's hoping ES6 is the banger we all want it to be or else I think the studio I knew and loved is in the grave for now. Expand

There's also several features missing; where is the diving? Why almost no blood/gore? Why no vehicle to traverse on land? Why no free flying in space, only fast travel? Why no maps?

Has potential to be good though, but that is assuming BGS or modders fix the performance, removes the woke and adds missing features (it will probably not be BGS doing these things....)

Primitive and unoriginal main storyline. Noname player character, typical secret organization, typical ancient artefacts... It feels like a generic RPG story in a generic RPG world.

Visually, Starfield is stuck in the past, at least for 10 years. The mediocre graphics combined with a noticeable lack of optimization leave much to be desired, especially for a AAA title in 2023.

Starfield is built on an outdated engine from Skyrim or Fallout 4. It is so ancient and miserable that any mods cannot hide all its flaws. A seamless world in a space exploration game? Forget it.

    Instead, you will get:

    - Absolutely horrible NPC face animations

    - Overcomplicated UI

    - Loading screens, loading screens everywhere non-stop.

    - Exploration is boring after visiting yet another dead planet.

    - Choices don't really matter and have barely any impact to ending

    - Bugs, visual bugs, AI bugs, or any other types of bugs

    - Stupid quests like a "find X of some crap and bring it to those NPC", like in games from 2010y.

The gameplay itself, "shooting and looting", is somewhat enjoyable if you are in 2012, but currently, we are in 2023, and now Starfield gameplay is just boring.

So, maybe Starfield isn't worst game ever, but it's definitely not worth the money. Buy it only on sales with big discounts.

    - performance is really bad, the worst optimized game of 2023, had to go through multiple tweaks just to make it playable, go look up the benchmarks.

    - UI is straight garbage and confusing, had to install some like 5/6 mods to not get a headache everytime i open a tab.

-The game is missing basic features that are considered standard in every **** rpg and some videogames, like FOV, Gamma and Texture settings; no local map, so looking for whatever shop you need is a **** nightmare. let's not forget that you can't change the piss yellow tint, so unless you install mods, you're stuck with bad color grading and washed out blacks .

-No tutorials, like, wtf? the ship builder tutorial is basically " yo this the ship builder, have fun".

-Main quest is easily the worst one bethesda has ever put out, you get shoehorned into the story with no nuance and it doesn't get any better as you progress, it's basically get artifact, report back to npc, go get another artifact, until you have all of them and you can start the most unsatisfying and unrewarding NG+ to ever exist; the writing is trash, unimaginative and lacks depth, it's just so funny that some secondary quests are leagues above the main one when it comes to all these factors

-Facial animations are dated and so jarring that they can't even make an attempt at helping the, most the times, poor VA, and it doesn't help that many times you can't skip dialogues cause you're not part of the conversation so you just stand there watching basically animatronics talking bout **** that you don't even care about. BG3 facial animations, while not perfect, are miles ahead.

-Some Features are just straight up useless, for example, do you want to sell a ship you just stole? Cool, you sell the ship for 11k credits, but first you have to register it for 80% the original value, so you get like 2K and maybe you can get a couple med packs with those. Oh, you want to cannibalize the stolen ship and remove maybe the weapons so you can install them on your ship? too bad, you can't do that.
Fuel is Aesthetic and just a number that represents how far you can get with your Grav drive, there's no actual fuel mechanic; subjective? maybe, but for me it's a wasted opportunity and it breaks immersion

-Talking bout immersion, loading screens and fast travelling for every **** thing that you do is easily the worst design choice of the entire game, it's immersion breaking in the worst way possible; you want to travel to another solar system? brief cutscene of the grav drive engaging and then loading screen. you want to land on that planet? you get the last 5 seconds of the landing and then a loading screen; space is just another instance where you have ship combat and that's it, and the worst part is that they didn't even try to hide or mask it.

The perk system is a **** joke and locks basic mechanics that previous BSG games had already at the start; you want the stealth meter or the ability to use your jetpack, which you get from the beginning? spend a point. you want to combat slide? spend a point. the worst part is that to level up perks you have to beat challenges that get more unfair the further you get with the ranks, to get to the "more settlements" perk rank 4 you have to go to 10 different planets and place a beacon and an airlock, if it sounds fun to you, cheers. you want decorations to cost 50% less to build? better get ready to fill your outpost with 50 tables and waste your precious materials. Weight feeds into the perk system, as the base weight is very low and just 5 minutes of looting makes you cumbersome, so even more perk points lost.

-XP gets crazy low after completing the main quest which gets you to just around level 20 or some. apart from like 4/5 secondary quests which are actually good and the best content of the entire game, the rest of them is item fetching garbage that barely gives you any xp, so good luck leveling basically anything after a while.

-There's no land vehicle, which according to mr Howard, is a design choice. so cool to walk 1km across empty, barren wastelands just to get to a POI that I will probably see again on the next planet that I land on, with exactly the same layout and loot.

So, the only standouts of the game is It's aesthetics and the ship builder, and even that has its flaws. Anyway, im reaching the character limit.

Just get it on gamepass if you want to play it, otherwise go play other SCI-FI games which are way more fun and immersive, like no man's sky, mass effect or outer worlds. Better yet, go play BG3 which came out last month and it's worth playing

I fear for TES 6 And this **** company that refuses to grow and seems to be stuck in 2008.

Without the PC port issues there would be some fun to have, especially for a free game, but when the developer claims they made planets boring on purpose because space is boring, you can glean the reality that they even realize it is a mediocre offering at best. Beat the game in 10 hours with the mining laser as my only weapon. Played 30 more to see if it ever gets good. Too bad I can't get a refund on my time, because it remains utterly dull.

you CAN fly between planets, but why you ever would i don't know. there are no points of interest in space, it takes like 7 irl hours minimum to do so, this means the game is essentially "go to ship>go to seat in ship>press space to launch cutscene to take off and "teleport" to space>open map> find destination planet> fast travel to it, land via cutscene.

i'm so disappointed that there are no points of interest in space, that i can't reasonably explore without just teleporting to a spot on the map, and that i can't fly down to a planets surface or manually take off and fly into space.

For me, this is easily one of the best games that has come out in recent memory. Like Elden Ring last year, I constantly find myself thinking about the things I'm going to do next in the game, the situations my characters are finding themselves in, where certain plotlines and backstories are going, and what's going to happen next. When I'm playing, I'm finding myself going to do things that seem interesting, only to be distracted by something else and spend hours going off on complete tangents from what I originally set out to do. Unlike many previous Bethesda games, of which I have bothered to complete very few despite having hundreds of hours in all of them (aside from FO76), the main story is constantly intriguing me and inviting me to come back for more. The core NPC interactions are interesting, and their backstories are investing, thrilling, and lengthy.

The ship building is utterly insane what you can accomplish with it. People have made everything from Thomas the Tank Engine, to the Magic School Bus, to The Planet Express, Halo's Pelican, and the Normandy from Mass Effect.

I could blather on for a while about what I find good about this game, but I'll stop here as there is a lot to discover and it's fun to just discover it on your own. It has a somewhat shaky start, but if you keep plowing through the story missions for a few hours, you will get to where the gameplay and game fully open up and that is where it is clicking for most people. In some ways this feels like a totally typical Bethesda experience, but in plenty of others it feels like something totally new and different from what they've done before. I loved it!

Performance wise, with the PC I listed above, the game is incredibly smooth. I'm not pixel peeping or running an FPS meter, but the gameplay feels very smooth on a 1440p monitor with G-Sync. Little to no stuttering, and great frame pacing.

For me the game is a very solid 9/10, but giving a 10/10 because of the absurdly low scores people are giving.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not sure how this is getting 10/10 with all the performance issues, how terrible FSR 2 looks, the constant loading screens, the empty space gameplay, the rushed stories you're thrown neck deep into without getting to develop your character before being thrown into these major events (for example, the Vanguard after your first mission suddenly you're now a spy for the UC Navy going in deep cover against Crimson Fleet). The sound has issues as when other people start talking, everything overlaps and the conversation you're trying to hear becomes too quiet to hear. Subtitles get overridden when additional conversations are happening. Surround sound gets too low unless you're literally right up in the characters face. Ship building was way overhyped and very limited with only a handful of manufacturer parts and not all match if you try to intermix them to create something unique. Also experiencing constant game freezes and I have to force close the game, luckily it's in full screen windowed so I can alt-tab to the task manager but that's another issue is no exclusive full screen so other apps won't keep popping up over the game. in over 70 hours of game play, I've had one CTD which is pretty amazing for a BGS title. I've had a lot of minor bugs - mostly NPC pathing which has often been hilarious.

Though I love the game, it does have some faults. The outpost system is pretty powerful, but it ultimately doesn't have much of a purpose in-game outside of making credits. Making credits is important, of course, but I wish it had more impact.

Soulless political messaging platform that under-delivers on the implied promise of its advertising and lacks the open world you play a Bethesda game for.
Instead you get uninspired strings of fishbowl instances and the entirety of space is merely a separate fishbowl you have to fast travel to before you fast travel again to the fishbowl you intended to reach. Isolated space arenas that may or may not have anything to do in it before you can fast travel once again to the destination, which is probably an empty landscape that mostly looks the same as every other empty landscape you've visited and are forced to walk slowly across to find the quest marker, and maybe pass the random structure you've seen 12 times already with next to no variation between its instances.
The worldbuilding is complete garbage that flies in the face of realism, the world is not believable at all with a near complete lack of identity behind the superficial veneers advertising a faction, as somehow after 200 years or something the remains of humanity still have a cosmopolitan modern PC political persuasion with random accents from any given modern day country that was already nearly a century out of date before humans had their exodus from Earth in the timeline.
Overall it feels like there are many missing or incomplete systems that they scrapped or really should have thought about implementing.
The near unusable "Map" they have is the most glaring example. They practically don't have a map. Much like the rest of the game being a fast travel simulator, the map's only function is to see and click fast travel nodes as the map is otherwise entirely unreadable.

Bethesda games have taken up perhaps 70% of my lifelong gaming hours and it was a foregone conclusion tat I would have bought Starfield so yes, I preordered it, and the 100$ early access version no less.
I regret it. I might not buy TES6 at this point, as it's unlikely they'll improve by then- They'll surely get worse the same as other once-great studio names that get hollowed out over time until they're a pox on their own history.

It's a decent game just it's definitely not what they hyped it up to be. Mods shouldn't be what makes the game good.

Starfield isn’t a perfect game. No game is. That said, for a game to have this much ambition and actually pull off almost everything it set out to accomplish is a remarkable achievement. This game is so large that I felt like it had infinite story content for the first 30 hours of my playtrough but without me playing any of the main quests it also runs decent on a 3070 laptop which is really good for a game optimized for amd tldr: best game I have ever played

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
