I had written a 4000+ character review before MetaCritic threw a error 500, so I really don't want to rewrite it. Instead I'll give a shortened version.

Movement is bad. This includes 1st and 3rd person. Also 1st and 3rd person walking is drastically different. You instantly move in 1st person, but 3rd person is delayed so the character animations can go through. If you run and jump, but suddenly stop pressing w you just stop moving all together. There is no momentum.(You're in space I promise you there is momentum.)

Flying your space ship in 1st person is nauseating. 3rd person is required and even then is not a 'fun' experience. Looting requires you to fly to each ship to press e on them where as mining on land it auto loots. Changing power allocation on your ship mid flight for combat is not engaging. If they could allow for power allocation presets it would be more enjoyable.

Game tries to get you to use their cover system, but it feels like you're fighting with the games programming to even trigger the cover action. Bullets shoot from the tip, but they do not shoot straight out the barrel they go diagonal from the barrel to the cursor.

The faces are jarringly bad. Not uncanny valley bad. If anything it looks like a mannequin. Eyelids don't line up and clip through the eyeballs. The mouths look like they just came from the dentist and are fighting off being numbed up. I spent an hour in character creation to make something that I could at least at the end of the day like, but gave up because the creator was just awful to use and everything looked well.. bad.

I've read many posts say the game gets good after 12-15hr. If the average person has time to play games for 1-3hr a day that is a week of playing the game before it pays off.

I would not recommend this to anyone. I would not recommend it to people who like Bethesda games. I would not recommend it to people who like space exploration. I would not recommend it to anyone who likes resource gathering and base building.

Your time is best spent elsewhere.

TLDR; Starfield has all the hallmarks of lazy Bethesda design with none of the charm or soul of their older games. If you take the procedural world of No Man's Sky, add in Fallout guns, and then subtract 90% of the meaningful content and design attention from either of those games, you'll have Starfield. Top it off with an insultingly poor UI that forces you to constantly fight against it to actually play the game.

I'm putting my interface rant at the top, because as PC users, there's a fairly good chance you'll be playing on keyboard and mouse, and I want to be sure that you get this warning first. Bethesda did NOT make this game for PCs, despite what they or anyone else says. Starfield was made for consoles, and it shows in every single aspect of the UI design. Starfield has the distinction of employing the single most unintuitive and tedious UI I have ever seen in an RPG, and I am well acquainted with interfaces that are, charitably put, rough. Menus are locked to 30 (30!) fps. The main menu is radial and annoying to utilize with a mouse and keyboard. Every menu, from the main menu, to inventory, to ship editing, has SO much wasted space that Bethesda inevitably uses for some silly cosmetic purpose like showing asset models, instead of displaying actual gameplay information. On top of that, information is organized in a nonsensical way, separating relevant bits of data onto different parts of the screen, or totally hiding information from the player. Keybinds between similar menus are different for seemingly no reason, and in the menus and game itself, pressing a key and holding it function as separate commands. These two innocuous "design" choices really mess with the player's ability to develop muscle memory for the menus and end up burning a lot of time on accomplishing routine UI tasks. The map system, where you will spend much of your time is a total mess. There is no minimap or local map to speak of beyond a dotted grid that shows no information besides the relative position of POIs and there is no map whatsoever for interior spaces or cities.

Starfield is poorly optimized (another signal that the PC release is an afterthought), and for the poor performance, looks barely as good or even worse than games five years or more older. Starfield's lighting and color saturation is a mess, so a lot of objects and structures look overly reflective or blurry. The antialiasing is primitive, so distant objects have choppy edges and combine to make a game that looks VERY unimpressive in 2023. On max settings, my machine barely breaks 90 fps, on fairly high end AMD hardware (7700X CPU/7900XT GPU/64gb RAM), which is who Bethesda partnered with to optimize their game. On Premium Edition release day, I crashed to desktop within the first 60 seconds of starting my game, and then once about every 10 minutes for several hours afterwards. To credit AMD/Bethesda, there was a GPU driver update specifically for Starfield that very day, and after installing it I haven't suffered a single crash. Still though, that's an awful first impression for a game with the budget and development time of Starfield. I have heard that the game is very unstable on Nvidia hardware, which I am willing to believe, so if that's what you have, be sure to look into whether the game will actually run for you. Loading screens are constant, as all building and ship interiors are instanced. If you aren't running this game off an NVME drive, expect to spend a lot of time staring at a loading screen.

The scope of this game is an illusion formed by copy and pasted assets and populated by terribly coded NPCs. Their behavior is rudimentary, even by the standards of Bethesda's older games. Space exploration in Starfield is a falsehood. Travel is accomplished either on foot, or through fast travel options from the map menu. Your ship is simply a place to offload your inventory and do some crafting. There is no atmospheric flight, so almost all of the time you interact with your ship it's on the ground. The gunplay is serviceable, and the audio design is pretty good, but only when the NPCs aren't bugged or acting braindead. After so many years and hundreds of millions of dollars, a scifi reskin of Fallout with laughably low-effort worldbuilding is way less than customers deserve.

In a futuristic world where the wheel and mobile phones were never invented, you will click to travel instantly halfway across the galaxy. You will climb into your cockpit once, maybe twice, before learning that you can simply click and go! Except if you are docked.

Yes, you can travel from the middle of the wilderness of one planet to the landing zone on another planet with just a flick of the wrist and a twitch of the index finger, but if you are docked to some space station forget it!

You are a nobody, a lowly newb miner with a possibly interesting background that has nothing to do with mining, but for “reasons” you will be sent to retrieve a mysterious artefact that displays “gravitational anomalies”, y’know, like in Star Trek. You will have a cinematic.

A man turns up to gift you his ship and take your place in the mine. He too has had a cinematic, and so he knows all about the mysterious gravity things. You will ask yourself, “If this guy knew I was going to have a cinematic, wouldn’t it have been polite for him to say something about that before letting me have my pixels rearranged?”

His chums in the secret society will give you a room in their hidden base, which is cleverly disguised as a base in plain sight. They will chat to you as if you’ve always been there, and send you on missions to find more of the weird artefacts.

Funnily enough, although they are a society of explorers it appears they have done precisely no exploring, leaving that onerous task to you, the hero.

So, you will discover strange alien sites featuring gravitational anomalies. You will discover them many times. You will explore the full extent of the procedurally generated tile that magically appears around you. Mysteriously, the caves and bases you find on all these many, many, many, many planets and moons will all be made of the same stuff, right down to the tea trays, pens and toilet paper.

You will find innumerable weapons and suits and helmets and medpacks and resources and junk, and you will click and click and click on your many and varied storage places. There’s storage on you, in your companion, in another companion, in your locker on your ship, in the cargo hold on that ship, in the cargo hold on another ship - so many places to lose your loot!

You will get powers you remember from Skyrim, and pretend they are new.

The map will be a field of dots showing no detail. Even the cities will be mapless. You will remember that the mobile phone hasn’t been invented, so obviously no maps! And no taxis or bicycles, because the wheel isn't a thing. Just a train that never moves until propelled sideways by cut scene.

You will enjoy loading screens. Many times.

You will shoot the same bad guys. Many times.

You will shoot or avoid the same weird creatures. Many times.

You will scan bushes and trees. Many times.

You will have epic space battles. A couple of times.

You will hardly role play at all. Unless you start rolling dice IRL.

NPCs will ignore any behaviour you care to engage in, but they will look at you sideways no matter what you do.

There are cities. Or are they towns? At least one of them is just a town. OK, one of them is definitely a city. It has skyscrapers and everything. Markers will appear amongst those skyscrapers, leading you believe your quest lies above your head, but the only thing that lies is the quest marker.

On planets you will see buildings in the distance that your scanner labels “unknown”, despite the fact that they are obviously buildings. But then you remember - no mobile phones = no maps.

Other “unknown” features will turn out to be wrinkles in the topographies of otherwise largely flat terrains.

The vast universe will be yours to explore, and you will never notice that assets and concepts have been repeated almost infinitely. You will never see the workings of the procedural algorithms, because they are so cleverly done. Except when you do, which will be always.

You will conclude that the appearance of plenty is better than actual plenty, because you will be happy to be enjoyed so completely by Todd and his investors. You will think of Skyrim and swallow your overdraft, and you will be happy. Yes. Very happy.

This is the only game to give me the “Skyrim-feel” since Skyrim. Bethesda knocked it out the park with this one. If you go into it expecting a seemless space sim, then you won’t like it, because that’s not what it is. The whole thing is a little too familiar and definitely a letdown when you consider the years and years of hype. If anything this game feels old fashioned in 2023.

If you're okay playing a new version of Skyrim or Fallout then this is exactly that! Definitely big and expansive just like those games were. You can put a lot of hours into Starfield if you don't get bored and bounce off first.

Title: A Disappointing Descent: The Last Bestheda Game Review

Starfield is a game that promised so much but ultimately falls short in almost every aspect, leaving players with a bitter taste of disappointment. From its lackluster gameplay to its uninspired story, this game feels like a mere shadow of what it could have been.

    Underwhelming Gameplay:
The gameplay in Starfield is a mixed bag of mechanics borrowed from other, better games. Combat feels clunky and unpolished, with awkward animations and unresponsive controls. The open-world exploration, which is typically a hallmark of Bethesda games, is plagued by numerous bugs and performance issues that hinder immersion.

    Tedious Quests:
The main story and side quests are riddled with clichés and offer little in the way of originality. Players are often tasked with mundane objectives that lack depth and fail to engage the player's interest. The dialogue options feel meaningless, as choices rarely have any impact on the narrative.

    Technical Nightmares:
One of the most glaring issues with Starfield is its technical instability. Frequent crashes, game-breaking bugs, and long loading times make for a frustrating gaming experience. It's as if the game was rushed to release without proper optimization and quality control.

    Graphical Stagnation:
Graphically, Starfield is a far cry from the standards set by other contemporary titles. The character models are bland and lack detail, while the environments lack the breathtaking beauty that players have come to expect from open-world games. The art direction feels uninspired, and the game world lacks the visual diversity that would make exploration worthwhile.

    Empty World:
Despite being an open-world game, the world of Starfield feels strangely empty. There are vast stretches of land with little to no meaningful content, leaving players with little incentive to explore. The lack of interesting NPCs and settlements further exacerbates the feeling of emptiness.

In conclusion, Starfield is a game that fails to live up to the expectations set by previous Bethesda titles. It's a perfect example of how a promising concept can be marred by poor execution. With its unimpressive gameplay, technical issues, and lack of innovation, it's difficult to recommend this game to anyone looking for a fulfilling gaming experience. Bethesda must take a hard look at its development practices and prioritize quality over profit if it hopes to win back the trust of its once-loyal fan base.

    Pros
Gameplay sometimes enjoyable if you like Bethesda games, but it's still gameplay from Oblivion, nothing really new added, gameplay core is still the same as in 2006.
    Few interesting quests
    Cons
    No optimization
    No DLSS
No mods in xbox game pass PC version. Lol really Bethesda?
Default plot about The Chosen One
    Tons of bugs
    Animations directly from Oblivion
Non-interactive residents of the cities, they don't care about what happens around them
Almost every action requires a loading screen, this was acceptable in Fallout 4 in 2015, but not in 2023 Bethesda. I think the game should be called Loadfield.
    Todd Howard's lies, as usual
Most problems because of outdated engine, outdated level design, outdated Bethesda.
I'm waiting for the same engine without changes, same animations, same bugs and bad optimization in TES 6. Oh, and waiting for 30 fps on the next Xbox and RTX 7090.

    Starfield: An Honest Review

Having delved into the much-anticipated game, Starfield, I've come away with some very defined opinions that might not align with the hype.

To be transparent, I rate this game a 6 out of 10. Some might argue that's even being generous. Although my experience might be skewed because I played on PC and it's evident that Starfield is a console game with an unsatisfactory PC port. It feels lackluster in supporting the features and standards that PC gamers expect, most glaringly, a user interface that is notably "console trash."

    Storyline & Quests
The main storyline is, to put it plainly, uninteresting. The narrative introduces a supposedly mysterious plot device expecting awe from the player, but it failed to elicit any such emotion in me. Additionally, the side quests and factions leave much to be desired, coming across as uninspired.

    Combat & AI
The combat system borrows heavily from Fallout 4, inheriting all its flaws. The enemy AI is far from competent, and the Companion AI manages to be even worse.

    Exploration & Travel
Considering the "open-world" nature of Bethesda RPGs, Starfield's space setting could have presented an interesting twist. However, the execution is flawed. There's an over-reliance on Fast Travel, turning almost every movement into a loading screen, void of the immersive 'warp jump' scenes one would expect in a space game. Planet exploration, while likely the core attraction for many, felt mundane. Interactions, whether with resources or NPCs, often lack depth and intrigue.

    Urban Exploration
Venturing into urban spaces has its share of disappointments. There are buildings of significance, like the abandoned embassy of an interplanetary organization, that are strangely inaccessible, a missed opportunity for world-building.

    Aesthetics
The game's aesthetic choices are perplexing. An example I vividly remember is the portrayal of space – it is wildly different from any conventional depiction, and not necessarily in a good way.

    Some Positives
To give credit where it's due, Starfield's lockpicking mechanism is phenomenal, standing out as the best I've ever seen in any game.

    Final Thoughts
Starfield isn't an entirely bad game. But juxtaposed with Bethesda's previous masterpieces, like Oblivion and Skyrim, it doesn't measure up. It feels like a missed opportunity, a space RPG that could have been so much more but falls short in numerous areas. While some might find joy in this game, I regret my purchase of the premium edition.

To players enjoying Starfield, I'm genuinely happy for you. This review is merely a reflection of my experience and by no means an attempt to belittle your enjoyment. However, for those considering the game, I'd suggest waiting. There's potential for improvement, perhaps through modders or DLCs, but as it stands, Starfield feels "super mid."

As a side note, after playing Baldur's Gate 3, the bar for RPGs has been raised significantly, making the shortcomings of Starfield even more evident. Current RPGs that don't adjust or evolve with the times might find themselves struggling in comparison. Starfield, in this landscape, feels like a step back rather than the leap forward many were expecting.

In that way, Starfield feels almost a retro experience. The interactions and gameplay reminds me of Oblivion, the way persuasion checks work to the dialogue and story progression. Though the fast-travel between planets and locations seem kinda immersion-breaking sometimes, the universe is full of unique places, cities and biomes - so it's worth it every loading screen, which is like 3-5 seconds maximum, so I don't know why people are complaining so much.

It's also fascinating to land on a random planet or moon and see what's out there. Every time you make a landing, the zone is rather huge - no point to travel over 1000m when most planets are pretty much desolate. There's usually four or so landmarks or destinations every time you land, giving you plenty of things to explore while you spend time scanning the environment for plant and animal life, as well as resources for your outpost.

I'd say it's definitely one of Bethesda's best, considering their sordid past of bug-ridden release. Though, they could use some QoL and just a little bug fixing after the initial release. Definitely worth checking out, especially if you have Gamepass and if you're on the fence, maybe wait for a couple patches or a sale to buy - unless you're as excited as I was to play.

    Here is my two cents.
    First, the good,
This is a good evolution of the Bethesda formula, the character traits and starting background variety really sell the RP aspect of this game.
It isn't Daggerfall, but the massive planets dotted with caves are pretty fun to run around in. Scanning things is addictive.
The gameplay is like skyrim, so its obvious fun. Its simple, but fun.
The crafting is nice The weird skills like "gastronomy" certainly add something.
    Thed ship customization is awesome.

    The bad:
No mini maps in caves, fix this please
Some of my friends had some really bad performance issues
The books ive run into are all "excerpts" this is a downgrade from skyrim and its ilk, where they are NOT excerpts they are full books.
The game is too easy, even on hard Not enough recipe variety

There's really no point at all for space craft, since it's basically cut scenes, maybe a combat mission. Once you have visited a planet/local you'll be fast traveling there any way. There are way too many copy and paste locales, for as many years as this was in development, more hand crafted locales would have kept my interest.

Some critics have suggested its basically Skyrim in space.. how I wish that were true! That at least would have been fun. Unfortunately my experience of Starfield so far is loading screens, fetch and carrier missions (a lot of those!) and fast travelling (which also generates another loading screen). The intro didn't grab me, I didn't feel instantly immersed like I did with Skyrim or even fallout 4. Looking at it, it doesn't actually look that different from those games except with a spacey skin thrown on top. Ultimately it feels like a walking simulator, or maybe even no mans sky..before it became an actual game. It just feels like its a mile wide but an inch deep. The space element feels like it was added in as an afterthought, probably by the same person who designed the main menu screen. Ill persevere with it, but its failing on the main objective for any game which is to entertain so far. It feels like a job, and that's not good.

    The good:
    Feels like a Bethesda game
    Space ship designing- fun
Huge potential for the mods to actually make it a fun game

    The Bad
The story, it doesn't captivate or grab you.
No planet vehicles- a huge sophisticated civilisation.. but no moon buggy?
Generic planets- they promised 1000 but then forgot to fill them with anything remotely interesting.
Space flight- or lack of it, no takeoff, landing (loading screens for those!)
Poor tutorials- the game doesn't explain WHY you cant fast travel somewhere just that its not possible right now.

    The Ugly
Loading screens. For. Every. Single. Door.
Fast travel is almost the default movement option
Repetitive missions (fetch and carry more than UPS)
Feels like a chore rather than a fun game

    - Extremally low fps (40 without FSR).
    - Constant downloads of locations

This game has no space exploration, very bad UI/UX, poor optimization, blend characters, empty and lifeless planets that all look the same with generated/copy-pasted content and lots of damn loading screens, but what's more important is that the game is just so insanely boring.
Bethesda never had an insanely interesting main story, but here, it is literally one of the worst main stories

Bethesda never had an insanely interesting main story, but here, it is literally one of the worst main stories I've ever experienced in video games. People are saying that the game is getting good after 10 hours, well, it's not. I'd say that Bethesda is not evolving and staying on the same quality level, but somehow this game is worse than Fallout 4.

Cuatro balas y a volar.

I'm not going to talk about writing or any of that stuff, because apparently people who regularly play BGS games don't care about that. I do want to WARN you, though - the opening missions force you to interact with the story for a few hours. You do have to do that before you get let off the leash (2-4 hours).

So, lets just talk gameplay: Combat - stand directly in front of the enemy

I do want to WARN you, though - the opening missions force you to interact with the story for a few hours. You do have to do that before you get let off the leash (2-4 hours).

    So, lets just talk gameplay:

Combat - stand directly in front of the enemy and just keep shooting them (20 levels above you? eh whatever).
    Settlement Building - awkward
    Ship Building - extremely awkward
Exploration - its a 20x20 cube of a forest, desert, or glacier copy-pasted about 500 times with 3 locations that are randomly generated. They're mostly caves.
Space Exploration - non-existent, you're selecting what random grouping of landing zones (save for a handful, all procedurally generated) you want to see
Companions - will absolutely not shut up to the point where I can't tell if its a bug

It paints a really bleak picture of humanity, since 95% (edited from 90% now that I have more time in the game) of human encounters are just bandits who talk exactly like Fallout bandits - over-the-top 'chaotic evil' ****
But *worse,* it just isn't even fun - this is the most boring game I've played in 20 years.

Edit: I want to add now that I've put in 5 or 6 more hours into this, the procedurally generated locations are actually duplicated item for item. I've come across the same abandoned UC listening post on 4 different worlds.

Based on my experience there's only 10 or so locations and they're just copy-pasted on worlds that themselves are randomly generated copy-paste messes. As is the flora and fauna. I've come across a wolf-like creature with a graboid head on every single world with life. It's usually called a "trapjaw" of some kind, they just change the colors and one of the adjectives to describe it (if you're lucky).

Starfield doesn't deserve the utterly poor ratings the haters have posted here. The game is not without its flaws, but it offers an amazing amount of fun that only a Bethesda RPG has to offer. I played it for 2 days straight the first weekend after release. It's neither Skyrim nor Fallout 4, but all the things I enjoyed most about both games are there in spades with this release.

Is this game perfect? Absolutely not. Will everyone like it? Again no. It's a fun game for what it is but what it is will be different for each person. For some it will have enough of what they want to be a good time. Others will be bored senseless because of what it is not. It is not a space exploration game, nor is it a BG3 style story epic. it is a Bethesda style RPG set in space. ForIs this game perfect? Absolutely not. Will everyone like it? Again no. For what it tries to be, it is good I enjoyed it a lot. For all it's flaws, you can say it definitely isn't perfect but if you like Bethesda's previous work, you will like this.

While many have seen bugs and technical issues, I have encountered 1 big non-game breaking bug, encountered 1 crash and had only very rarely had performance issues (I travelled very far into a procedurally generated map and got a bit of stutter while saving). And this is on an Nvidia and definitely not top of the range. Given personal experience as a result, I cannot dock points for that but I also cannot guarantee anyone else the same performance for the same reason.

I'm really disappointed, I've been waiting for this match for a long time and now it's a cold shower.

    Let me explain:

I was expecting an innovative game. This is what Bethesda was selling us as an argument. They also sold the game to us by telling us "The planets will be explorable in their entirety".

But that's not the case, we're on Fallout 4, in space, with a procedural generation similar to that of No Man's Sky, AND THE BIG BLACK POINT (for me anyway): we can't land freely on a planet, nor take atmospheric flight or travel in a vehicle on the surface of a planet. WHICH MEANS THAT EXPLORATION (which they sold us!) ONLY EXISTS DURING LOADING TIMES!!

The game is completely empty (well no, it's filled with "space pirates" everywhere outside of cities), and if you've ever played Fallout 4 you'll understand that the game is exactly a carbon copy, but in space with procedural generation (and less well)...

The story is sloppy as possible, we find ourselves propelled into the adventure with a simple snap of the fingers (and it's called "RPG"), I'm not going to spoiler but it's really not a credible story. And apart from the story, most of the NPCs you come across will have a small side quest to allow you to negotiate with a particular person, or look for an object,... in short, Fallout 4 (procedural) and no surprises.

Moreover, the "negotiations" are generally totally false and this inevitably leads to a fight.

Procedural generation obviously only serves to make us stay on GamePass with a myriad of bogus quests and pirates in every corner of the map.

Bethesda, you made a terrible mistake in getting bought by Microsoft.

Starfield should have been the most open-ended Bethesda game to date. Instead, it is the most limited. There aren't 1000 planets to explore. There is 1 planet to explore, with a dozen or so color schemes to make it a 'new' planet. You can't actually explore the planets, or space, in a meaningful way. The best thing about this game, like so many others lately, was the marketing and hype.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
