Absurdly large game with vastly improved visuals, stability, writing and design from Bethesda's last two entries.

Why not a 10? Cumbersome inventory, not enough moral diversity between companions (that I have thus far discovered).

Otherwise, for people who were expecting a standard Bethesda game ala Fallout 4 - you will be pleasantly surprised by the improvements across the board. In my opinion, this game surpasses Skyrim and reaches the same level as Oblivion. A return to form, if you will :)

Over 40hrs So far it has offered a good experience (feels like only play 5% of the game)

Experience: For the fun, adventure, and immersion it offers, I give it a 10/10. AI Concern: If I were to nitpick, the game's AI could use some improvements. Adjusting for this, a more critical rating might be a 9/10 but is 10 for me overall long time ago have so much freedom on the game (alive).

Bug: Kudos to Bethesda! Starfield is arguably one of their cleanest releases with the fewest bugs. AINTNOWAY

Content: The game is rich in content, offering players an array of choices and paths. The freedom to choose and craft one's journey is a standout feature. Whether you are doing missions, trading, exploring, building, or engaging in battles, there is no shortage of activities.

Travel Mechanics: While Starfield prominently utilizes fast travel (Someone might hate this, understandable). In contrast, games like Star Citizen may offer intricate ship control, but I find such mechanics can sometimes detract from the overall experience. If Starfield were to adopt these detailed mechanics, it could risk extending the game's duration unnecessarily, potentially taking over 600 hours just to space travel to beat the games (Trust Me).

Disclaimer: I've wrote 170 game reviews on here for fun, being as honest as I can be. I think I've scored two games 10 and two games 0 in that time. So when I give Starfield this score and review, it is not 'review bombing' - it's embarrassing to see media outlets time and time again dismiss user generated reviews because they're generally actually more reliable than their scores.

    On with the review...

I was excited for Starfield. Not to the extent most were - I didn't expect Game of the Century - but I expected a really fun experience, Skyrim in space as people say.

I even bought the special edition headset and controller because they're incredible. I have zero regrets doing so either.

So yes, it's disappointing to say that Starfield is... mediocre. In many ways it is actually Skyrim in space, and if that was the aim they technically achieved it. But it's done with no heart, soul or innovation. It's a relic, a game from ten years ago, clumsily dressed up and disguised as a modern one. But it's like plastering over a wall that's falling apart; the cracks quickly begin to show. And boy does Starfield have cracks.

NPCs look and act like robots. They don't feel part of the world. Even the voiced primary cast have a vague empty feel to them. The cities suffer from uninspired design - either painfully bland or cookie cutter. They get a bit better than the first one you'll bump into, which isn't hard as THAT one almost feels like a practical joke in how generic and beige it feels, but it never gets to the territory of 'good'. Indeed, The Outer Worlds - a game this borrows heavily from and is inferior to in look, story and character - smashes Starfield apart in this respect.

Yes, the game is 'big'. But 90% of it is lifeless. Literally. Barren planets acting as resource deposits. Again, The Outer Worlds - smaller, more focussed and hand crafted - is leagues beyond what Starfield offers in terms of curated content, because it's a more even experience throughout.

The writing and cast... no, actually, I won't criticise the voice actors too much. It's done well for their part. But the writing... it's Maguffin 101, you largely know what is going to happen throughout inside 15 minutes and there's very little turn of pace or direction. And to again compare to The Outer Worlds, nearly everything is so serious - yes, it occasionally 'lightens up', but it feels like a side-mission of levity to the main mission of deadly serious, boringly delivered lines. Without Skyrim's 'one voice actor voices like 200 people' novelty, this really, really starts to grate.

Combat is, for the most part, good. Gunplay - a concern of mine ahead of launch - is surprisingly very decent. The levelling system, however, isn't. It's... not pointless as such, as the perks work, but it's all delivered at snail's pace and in terms of combat perks can mostly just be straight up nearly ignored.

The UI is classic Bethesda - terrible. But I could have lived with that personally as it's par for the course. The lack of mapping, however, isn't. It's an almost gamebreaking design fault, absolutely shocking and I can't for the life of me understand why they went in this direction. It's supposed to be a sprawling open world RPG - how can you NOT give the player mapping?

Speaking of RPG, this comes to the crux of my issues with Starfield. It's decidedly an average looter-shooter first, and an RPG second. Fresh off the back of Baldur's Gate III and Sea of Stars, Starfield REALLY feels limited in its role-playing aspects.

Is it a 'bad' game? No. There's a lot of fun to be had, it does a lot right. But it's a disappointing one overall. From the makers of Skyrim and Fallout, over a decade after the latters release and with the company surely learning from the mistakes of Fallout 76, I simply expected a lot better. This is going to be a game that review sites will cringe when looking back on the 9s and 10s it's been rewarded out of sheer hype, because it's quite honestly not even close to that score. It's a 4/10 'Bethesda' game for me, but a 6/10 'actual game' - I expected so much more and got, what the kids call, a 'mid' experience. To this day, I can pick up and play Skyrim for a few hours and have a great time; whereas I pick up and play Starfield and I'm looking for reasons to carry on after 15 minutes. Therein is the difference.

The biggest issues for me are the sheer amount of loading screens and the game getting off to a bit of a slow start but positives include better gun gameplay when compared to Fallout 4 & 76, The sidequests I've played thus far feel much more fleshed out compared to previous Bethesda titles, the pick locking and persuasion systems have been improved drastically and whilst I'm not denying that others may have had issues with the game's performance on PC, Starfield has run well for me and I've come across a small number of bugs but nothing even remotely close to game-breaking. But there are clips online which show people having problems getting this game to run well so I don't want you to necessarily take my word for it, I'm just providing you with my experience. I've been very much enjoying the shipbuilding and whilst it is quite janky and can be refined, designing and customising ships is a blast and I'm glad the game allows you to design ships as wacky as you want. The actual ship combat is okay but I've never really been into flying games so I don't feel as though I can give an honest assessment of how good it is.

I've not played around with the outpost system too much but I've seen some reviews question the point of building outposts, which is kind of baffling to me considering outposts allow you to passively harvest resources so they do have a usage but even so it's a fun inclusion being able to have a sprawling network of bases across the universe and station followers and let's player get creative, trying to build the most extravagant base. Plus it is nice to have somewhere to decorate with loot and items you've collected in your playthrough. At the end of the day, it's cool, it doesn't need to have a point (even though it does).

What grabbed me the most was the world-building, the lore, the characters, and the story. I'm still of the mindset that Bethesda will never be able to top the worldbuilding in the Elder Scrolls but I'm loving it so far in Starfield.

This game can both look astonishingly beautiful when you're standing on a hill and look around you, then for you to stumble into a canteen where the textures look copied from the Fallout New Vegas era.
The open world does not seem that open to me, I don't know If It's just me, but I don't feel like I am a part of something bigger out there when I'm traveling through the emptiness of most planets in the game, with the occasional spotting of a wild creature that I have seen on 10 different planets some hours ago.

Overall I would say that this game is a good one, definitely would recommend to try it out in GamePass. I would not however recommend to buy it for the 100$ or 80$ price range simply because I do not believe that it is worth as much.

I did not get spoiled by anything, did not read any hype review, I just wanted to play a good new Bethesda game - since they are so proud of the fact it's the first truly new IP in 25 years, I hoped they'd really deliver on it... since I started playing their games with Morrowind, I had some hopes they'd make it. Sadly they did not.

Sadly they did not.

    TL;DR:
They did a Fallout 76 on their "Space Skyrim" - OR: The Space Skyrim that never was. If you are a fan of Sci-Fi and "Open World" - which works in the strongest sense of the word in this game since the vastness the game simulates is humongous... however it feels almost like an empty shell when you get to explore. Much like No Man's Sky, it only gives the impression of being big and exciting, with great variations. The systems are a chore - even worse than Oblivions "use a Skill 100 times to advance in level" system, this game makes you work for even being able to Sneak, Lockpick and steer bigger space ships. It would all be acceptable if the grind wasn't that downright dull, if the Characters you meet in your first stretch of the journey weren't that kind of empty and one-dimensional-feeling and the Ship / Space mechanics weren't that "Elite Dangerous" kind of level.

This way, you get the worst out of 3 genres and all mashed into one humongous - albeit good-looking on Xbox X, game - on PC better prepare to have a huge graphics card budet that'd buy you two Xbox Series X likely and a year of Game Pass. Maybe that's what Microsoft/Beth wanted? Sell those Xboxes... it might work initially but boy, when the people get to playing this they just might be regretting that decision.

Bethesda seem to really love their "random number generator" engine - it drove many of their Elder Scrolls and the new Fallouts to new heights - but back then these games had a Soul infused in form of a major storyline, exciting characters to meet all across the Wastes or the vast action-filled mysterious world of Tamriel.

If they have the "whole of eternity" to work with, it seems the previous ingenuity of Bethesda seems to get dulled and stretched too far. This game has an inkling of the brilliance that was the first 5 hours of most any Elder Scrolls Game or Fallouts 3, New Vegas and 4 - but once the vacuum of Space sucks at your brain when you realize the first 5 hours of this Megahyped Game do not reach the old heights but are a downright borefest it's a bit sad.

The game is simply put BORING and that's the biggest issue. Why is there no vehicle to explore the uncharted worlds is beyond stupid it's like MassEffect 1 without Mako - CRAZY. Exploration is boring and it's just repetition of the same thing over and over.

Second thing is the graphics, this was proclaimed true next-gen title well the graphics sure as hell don't reflect that, it's not terrible but it's nothing special either they also didn't add very good textures no doubt so that the game would run on **** xbox series s which has lower amount of V-RAM, just look no further than water quality or reflections.

Third thing is the Performance and this is where i would score this game a big fat zero. In New Atlantis in 1440p native/ultra(shadows high) i got 60-70fps on 13600K/RTX 4080..... i can get this much in Hogwarts Legacy or Witcher 3/Cyberpunk with RAY TRACING ULTRA. This game has no explanation for such demanding hardware it doesn't use RT / Lumen / Nanite or Unreal Engine 5 while we're at it this game is made on ancient Creation engine which is no doubt the root cause of bad performance and lacking graphics quality. The only good thing about performance is that it's not stuttering and running a flat frametime.

As if all this is not enough the game lacks actual options which are critical for PC: NO FOV , NO Gamma Setting, No HDR even though it exists on xbox (it's terrible implementation even so...), NO DLSS even though it took me 20 min to enable it via mod wtf? This is 70$ game why the hell must i correct the devs laziness or stupid AMD under table deals ????

Honestly i question the sanity of devs who game such high reviews, Microsoft clearly spent a lot of $ on reviewers to get them on board. Personally the current state of the game is 4/10 for me, simply bad.

No, it even lacks the things that always made Bethesda RPGs so special, as the exploration and secret wonders to discover are greatly reduced in comparison to older Bethesda titles. It can absolutely be fun and addictive but has so many flaws and unfulfilled potential, that it essentially becomes both, fun and disappointing in equal measures, when it’s fun it’s an 8 and when it’s clunky and boring it’s a 5 so I can sadly only give it a 7, especially since performance even on my PC is really bad for a last gen looking title. Let me start by saying: that I'm a Bethesda fan. I've had countless hours of fun with Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 & 4. My rant here is not based on hate, but pure passion. I played Baldur's Gate 3 just before Starfield, which is probably the best game I have played in my 35-year life. So I can't help it, I'm probably being more of a critic now if I had not played BG3.Let me start by saying: that I'm a Bethesda fan. Negative:
    * Story feels weak. Suddenly people just tell me to do stuff and join their community.
    * Uninteresting talent tree. A lot of % increase. Do 10% more damage with shotguns or do 10% more damage with pistols? Or "Unlock this feature that we have locked so you can unlock it". Just very uninteresting and low effort.
    * Exploring barren planets is not fun. It takes minutes to walk to a landmark. And when you arrive at an "Unexplored Cave", something I hoped would be a dungeon or something, was just a small cave with some rocks in it, I suppose that you should be able to mine, but after shooting with my mining laser on it for 30 seconds, I assumed I can't mine this material. It doesn't even say you can't mine it. Oh, and the cave was just a dead end after 20 meters.
    * UI is unintuitive and is hard to read sometimes.
    * Research UI is very confusing and hard to understand at first glance.
    * What should I do with all of the loot I pick up? Is there no stash for all my materials? I asked my companions to carry it, but it was confusing. I later found out about the cargo on my spaceship, but it wasn't clear at all for a new player.
    * Your companion says "Bye" if you're ending the conversation even though he or she is following you.
    * There are too many weapons right from the start. I got legendary weapons (yes, plural) when exploring a random building on one of the first moons/planets I went to. And I killed level 15-20's when I was level 5 on normal difficulty.
    * Enemies turning on the alarm without having seen you. I just made some sound not even in their room. I was just jumping. How did they know it was me (an enemy to them). I would have assumed they would explore what the sound was first.
    * Melee weapons don't have a slow attack. Press and hold the mouse button to charge up like in Skyrim for example. Makes the combat feel floaty and unresponsive. Sometimes the slashing animation doesn't even trigger.
    * No maps of interiors and towns... like wtf?
    * Subtitles of enemies in the distance you can't even hear - Not even a little bit.
    * Companions complaining every 5 minutes I loot stuff.
    * You can't unbind keybindings.
    * Bad level design in towns. Thinking about New Atlantis. No signs, no map, dead ends. Not fun when you are encumbered and just want to find a vendor to sell to.
    * You get side quests from random people that talk that you walk past, but you didn't pay attention to what they said and now you have a random quest to do something and you don't know why.
    * Bad explanation in quest descriptions. A lot of the time I'm asking why I should do this quest. I could have completed some parts of a quest, but it only tells me about the part I am on currently in a very undescriptive way. "Go do this thing". Why?!
    * I miss being able to read through current conversations at hand like you can do in Baldur's Gate 3. My mind often wanders away, or the story doesn't grasp me enough and then it's nice being able to read what was just said. I often end up having a lot of conversation options and then don't know what to choose because I didn't pay attention and I have to press Esc and restart the whole conversation.
    * Starfield is mostly a beautiful game, but some places look like graphics from 2007...
    * Citizens in cities are extremely boring. They really feel like NPCs. No purpose else than just being still, walking, and saying they don't have time to talk.
    * You have to go inside a menu to see your active buffs...
    * Played for 16 hours and didn't get achievements. Had to Google what was wrong. It said I had to restart my computer. Now achievements appeared in Steam but I had 0/50 unlocked...
    * When doing a quest, the NPC I had to follow got stuck and I couldn't finish the quest.
    * Should be illegal to release a game with mouse acceleration, mouse ratio and field of view only edited in .ini files
    * The lockpicking mini-game is more annoying than interesting/fun
    * I expected some innovations and more polish from Bethesda, but it really feels like the same quality of a game as Fallout 4.
    * The music reminds you of Fallout 4. I was hoping for something else to make the games feel more unique to each other.

    Positive:
    * If you have played Fallout 4 and Skyrim, you know what to expect. I loved those games, but it's 2023 now and Bethesda has to step up their game.
    * Ship building seems fun. I haven't tried out base building yet, but I expect it to be fun as well.
    * Space theme is cool.
    * Physics engine.
    * Lots of exploration.
    * Modders will save us? I hate saying this, but Bethesda should feel a bit of shame.

Una grande delusione.... Nessuna novità... Rispetto a Fallout sembra un gioco scopiazzato male.
    Noioso, ridondante... Privo di tutorial...
Quasi impossibile modificare la nave... Nemici sempre uguali... Mappe dei luoghi assenti...
Sistema di shooting tutt'altro che innovativo.
Tanti, tanti, tanti errori..... Un fallimento.

I really dont get all the hate, i have read the negative user reviews. They do not get one major point: this game is massive and it delivers. Of course nothing is perfect, but everything is working great.

    I love it so far!!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Starfield is an RPG style game that can attract my opinion well. I know very well that this game is one of the best. For me, the only problem that can change my opinion is the artificial intelligence of the game, which is good enough. No, but it is possible that the problem will be solved in the future Expand

La mayoría de planetas están vacíos, lleno de bugs que hacen que el juego sea una experiencia horrible y un motor gráfico obsoleto. Y de los npcs mejor ni hablar...

Bland main quest with a few intermittent decent side quests. Absolutely soulless inorganic exploration. How do you make a game about exploring the cosmos feel so lifeless and devoid of any intrigue? An absolute nightmare on my laptop(RTX 3060, on SSD with average 20-28 fps at low preset, 50% resolution scale :|)

There's a lot of flaws in space in Starfield. But that does not prevent me from exploring our galaxy again and again.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
