Starfield is a great game, where people are focusing and emphasizing flaws just because it's a Microsoft game and first Xbox exclusive.

-The writing is awful, the characters are all incredibly dull and uninteresting. I couldnt even force myself to suffer through the main storyline and I refuse to use any of the main companions because of how boring they all are. All of the actual companions have the same cookie cutter personalities and not even a single one of them is down to clown with evil players. Bethesda is OKAY at writing questlines and npcs that arent meant to be taken too seriously but they seem to have forgotten that they cant write a serious story for **** with this game.

-The world feels completely sanitized and edge-less. You can really tell that Bethesda went out of their way to purposefully sand down the sharp corners here, everything just feels so safe and PG-13. They were clearly terrified of accidentally offending anyone with even slightly edgy dialogue or content.

-Space and your spaceship is a glorified fast travel menu, it feels completely tacked on. If it weren't for the fact that the game forces you to pilot your ship, you would have no actual gameplay reason to do so outside of the extremely boring and shallow space combat. You cant actually fly anywhere in your ship, you just teleport around while watching a bunch of cutscenes of your ship flying. Encounters in space feel completely artificial too, you just occasionally run into people waiting around for no reason whenever you jump somewhere.

-The AI is HORRENDOUS, somehow even worse than previous BGS games. Ive NEVER seen a single human enemy advance on me in combat, ive never even seen them move through a doorway, let alone open one. Not to mention the enemy variety is completely nonexistent. 90% of enemies youll face are just copy pasted humans with like 1 of 3 different guns.

-The RPG mechanics are somehow even more basic and simplified from Fallout 4. Bethesda has literally regressed with every single game they've made when it comes to the actually RPG part of their RPGs.

-Player Freedom is basically nonexistent. These arent even sandbox games anymore, theyre curated theme parks where your only decision is the choice of which ride to go on next. Except you only have access to Snoopy-Land with all the bumper cars, merry-go-rounds and ground level swingsets.

-And finally, the Exploration is simply the worst its ever been. The feature they advertised the most is also the worst aspect the game. It doesn't feel like youre exploring a world, it feels like you're teleporting between a dozen different small areas. There is zero sense of being in an interconnected world, it just feels like a bunch of separate levels, no doubt because of how Bethesda seems to have designed the entire game around teleporting between planets with fast travel. Exploring the randomly generated planets is tedious and meaningless, they have nothing of value except some randomly placed points of interest that have nothing of interest. You also will spend the majority of your time on these planets sprinting and walking when your stamina runs out because Bethesda made the BAFFLING decision to not make ground vehicles of any kind. If you liked running around release day No Man's Sky planets then this might even be a small upgrade for you, if you have actual taste and value your free time though then this game is just going to be a huge disappointment.

The only things I can definitively say that I liked are the location designs. Cities and dungeons all look great, the interiors are vibrant and very well made, probably because Elianora from the Skyrim modding scene worked on this part of the game. Dungeon areas are all multi-layered with different pathways and rooms, a huge upgrade from the single hallway designs of the last few BGS games.
Also the art design itself is pretty good looking, the ships, weapons and spacesuits all look great.
Spaceship building is cool but held back by the fact that its nearly pointless because of how worthless the actual space aspect of this game is.
    That's about it.

Maybe mods will save it in a couple years but until then this is the most disappointing experience ive ever had in a Bethesda game, though I cant say im surprised given this has been the trajectory ever since Skyrim. If you REALLY like the standard, non-modded Bethesda fake RPG experience then you might enjoy this game despite it being the single worst fake RPG theyve every created.

One of the most soulless games ever made. It’s better than Fallout 76 but that’s like saying that Hitler was better than Stalin it’s hardly an improvement. Everything here is just so bland and more predictable than a Dhar Mann video we have seen this game already it was called Fallout 3 and that was a great game unlike Starfield.

Don’t buy this game don’t give Todd “Little Lies” Howard

I have no complaints there.

I'm not here to spoil anything for anyone, and people can get the goods and bads from other reviews. Realistically Starfield is a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 for me, but I'm putting a 10 up to try and at least balance out the 0's and 1's from these spoiled crybabies that have absolutely no respect for the clearly apparent thousands of hours of work and TLC the developers put into making this game, only for some basement trolls to floor it on metacritic with unreasonably low scores that should only go to games like ET on colecovision...

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!! I have 50+ hours into it so far and I have barely touched the tip of the iceberg. I have not stopped playing it since it came out. The gameplay is fun, the quests feel like they have a purpose, even the obligatory delivery quests. The combat is fast-paced and action-packed. I actually enjoy the NPC interactions, the voice acting is top-notch.

HOWEVER, something happened in 2016 that turned Bethesda onto the path of producing trash games. Fallout 4 was trash and it shouldn’t have been. Redfall is a monstrosity that never should have existed. Fallout 76 should have never existed. Now Starfield, a game that should not exist. Ever since they’ve sold out to Microsoft, it’s like they’ve been making games with these loony tunes looking graphics as it seems their new target audience is anyone under the age of 12. Rest in Peace Bethesda, I’m not looking forward to ES6 or anything you produce ever again. It’s a sad year in gaming history, we’ve lost some of the best. Expand

If the game was sold for 20 dollars, if it was made by an indie studio like Spiders and if it can ran without problems on a 1650Ti video card, I would give it somewhere around 4-5 points based on the sum of its advantages and disadvantages. But... this is a product from Bethesda, and Todd says that this is not a broken game, but that you have a bad PC.

The space side is odd, most of the action is FPS based ground / outpost based, almost nothing in actual space. You don't really have free-form flight, there is no sense of travel, you just fast travel everywhere.

I love exploring, when playing games like Skyrim I rarely if ever use fast travel, I love just walking through the world exploring, feeling like I'm part of it. With Starfield you have to fast travel everywhere, exploring planets feels boring, you just pick a random spot to fast travel to and then walk around empty areas to the nearest procedurally generated waypoint to explore the same basic cut and pasted generated content. Nothing feels particularly epic or even interesting.

The RPG aspects seem pretty much boiled down to an on-rails story and a bland skill tree. There are no really choices or ramifications for anything you say or do. Bar the main story side missions have no real affect on anything, dialogue choices affect almost nothing and the NPCs are wooden and uninteresting.

Graphically the game looks very dated, the ships flying around in orbit look like they've just been pasted in and are being pulled around on string like cardboard cutouts, New Atlantis looks particularly bad. Neon looks better but not by much.

NPCs are just pathing around, they look like copy / paste clones, there are no schedules or life to them.

Loading screens abound, almost everything has a loading screen, entering a building..loading, taking off..loading, landing..loading, using an elevator..loading, you get the idea.

The UI is truly awful, each screen seems to have it's own shortcuts using the same keys for different actions, there is no consistency. On one screen it might be Q and T to scroll through tabs, on another it might be Z and C. One screen might using Tab to exit, another uses Esc.

The controls in the ship builder and output builder are especially bad, placing components on your ship should be quite easy, but trying to drag a component from one level of the ship to another horrible. The output builder is even worse, the overhead camera view has some of the weirdest controls I've come across with mouse-X rotating and mouse-Y zooming, mouse-wheel changing item, left and right buttons rotating the item. And rotate isn't snapped at all, it's almost impossible to align anything with each other or the outpost walls. Games like Satisfactory, Space Engineers and pretty much anything do a much better job.

The game might improve, I've only played for 20 hours, but I don't feel like sinking any more time into it. I've more than enough other games to play, RPGs with great RPG mechanics, space games with actual space flight and story driven games with far more compelling stories.

    TLDR;

Space game without real space travel
RPG without any ability to actually play a role and have any impact
Ship and outpost builder with awful UI
    Living world with lifeless NPCs
Next-gen with 5-10 with aged gfx

A performance mod helped me to play the game with decent framerates. My in-game stats: https://imgur.com/a/vtWKEq6

    Positives:
    - A good role playing sci-fi game with an average main story line. Some of the secondary missions are actually well written and interesting.
    - My familiarity with the previous titles helped a lot.
    - There are a lot of things a player can do, although some of them are quite boring.
    - Ship customization is fantastic.
    - Guns and gun modifications are actually ok.
    - Gunplay is responsive and a huge step forward when compared with the previous titles.
    - Planets and ships look awesome as well as the wildlife.
    - Loot variety is good.
    - Soud design and voice acting is above average.
    - Modding support will provide a long lifespan for Starfield.

    Negatives (Laundry list)
-The game is not worth that 100 $ price. Wait for a discount.
    - My main issue is with the game difficuilty. At level 40, i was still engaging level 5 spacers in a level 40+ planet. I have started my run with hard difficuilty settings and I was swimming in money and high tier gear sometime after i reached level 20. My character was very strong and i was able to take out even level 50 creatures without any effort. And i did not change my preferred firearm and sidearm since i found it sometime around level 25.
    - Weapons lack a decent balance. Some are over-powered, some are absolutely useless.
    - The world does not scale up with your level. That is unfortunate.
    - Fast travel options and lack of food/water consumption breaks the game immersion. It felt like 2/3 of the space part of the game is scrapped half way during the development.
    - Most of the assets or dungeon designs repeat itself way too much. Same cave, same abandoned mining outpost, same abandoned military out post vice versa with the same loot locations is copy-pasted to the each world (There are hundreds). The game becomes repetitive after some time.
    - The game seriously lacks enemy variety.
    - Some basic features such as jumpjet usage or pickpocketing are locked behind the perk system.
    - 'XP earned' notification at the center of my screen every time i kill an enemy distracts myself way too much. I have disabled it very quickly.
    - UI design is bad. Inventory management is horrible. Mods fix some of the issues.
    - Space combat fails to deliver what i was hoping to see.
    - During one half of my gameplay, i was constantly overloaded. I have modded the carry capacity from 100 to 1000 and the mod solved my problem. I regret the skill points i have invested for more weight carrying capacity. There are some bad design choices here.
    - Outpost building mechanic is half baked. I will give an example, there is no item filtering for your storage containers. Logistics get clogged. Outpost structure placements are seriously bugged. Actually ahrd to do anything with it.

This is where Bethesda has dropped the ball:
    - Regrettably Bethesda has once again used the archaic 'Creation engine'. If starfield was released in 2010, it would be an awesome game. But in 2023, it looks outdated. With that budget, a better game engine, such as Unreal (Nanite technology) could be licensed.
    - PC gameplay is terribly optimized, or not optimized at all. When compared with other titles out there, such as Cyberpunk, there is no justifiable reason to demand such high PC specs.
    - No FOV slider, had to mod it.
    - Creation engine brings serious limitations of what could be done with the world design, also known as 'Loading screens'.
    - Even a single room shop requires a loading screen. Going to space is a loading screen. Landing is a loading screen. Getting back into the ship is a loading screen. Using an elevator is a loading screen. Opening a door is a loading screen. You get the idea, right?
    - NPC design looks bad, animations are not good either. Regular non-interactable NPC s such as pedestrians looks horrible. Something wrong with the eyes.
    - AI is terrible. Sometimes the enemy you are engaging does not even realize that he is being sniped bullet after bullet. Characters get stuck a lot, pathfinding is not working properly.
    - Dialogue screens are outdated. No meaningful, rich or rewarding NPC interactions either.
    - Sneaking does not work, i have tried and abandoned it very quickly. Reverted to one of the previous savegames to get the skillpoint investment back. Do not bother.
    - Same-gender relationships inside the game presented as something normal (A ring quest).

What is commented above is my personal experience, your mileage may vary. However i would suggest someone considering a purchase to wait for patches to fix some of the issues and more mods.

Exploring planets, doing missions, combat, interacting with npcs, building outpost, the main story line.. etc is all so amazing and fun.. I absolutely love this game. It has became my favorite all time and Bethesda proved how capable they are at creating a new universe for us to explore. It is a masterpiece.

played the game for almost 2 hours and I closed the game and deleted it. The optimization of the game is a disgrace. The spaceship has no meaning, you can go everywhere with fast travel. The graphics are bad. There is a stupid filter and it tires your eyes. In short, this game did not meet my expectations and disappointed me.

The Engine is outdated, not even support for 3840x1600. Even most Indi games support that today.
Most time loading new map when entering something, since the engine can still not handle such stuff. No realtime travel between planets, all time need to use Waypoints, same for landing/takeoff on Planets. Feels like a game made 1990 but not 2023 with all that limitations and restrictions.

Characters are looking also as if they would be made in 2000. Character-creation part is one of the worst i can remember in the last decates.
Dialogs are made like it exist just one script for camera and that one is used all time. No camera movements etc, feels very static.
Dialogs on the story telling part fells boring and flat.
Exploring Planets is on most time pointless, but that discussion about startet months ago that this could be as boring and pointless like in No Man´s Sky, there was the hope Bathesta would make it better since they have been warned and...they failed :P (why listen to costumers as long they give the money)
My score is also based on the price of the game. For a game in pricerange 70/100€ i can not give a better score with a outdated engine, loveles made characters, pointless number of Planets, bad inventory system, ugly character creator, flat dialogs etc. The game got the feel its made of Developers that got payed for being in office 8 hours/day, but not made by enthusiast that wanna make a great or at least good game. (Giving even the feeling like they are that kind of developers that dont even play games at all)

Funny also the reaction given by Todd Howard that people need a better hardware for running the game smooth. Got a 13900K + 4090, with that setting and the average till low made graphic that the game offers, it should run with +200fps. Proof of the outdated engine and loveles made development.

This is a Bethesda game with all its greatness and flaws. If you liked Fallout 3,4, Oblivion and Skyrim you will love this game. There is a lot of work, love and care on this game and it shows. On the other hand if you don´t like Bethesda RPGs, skip this one as there is not enough new content to interest you.

I am really enjoying the gunplay and ship building and fighting. every fight is different depending on the gravity levels which really make the gameplay dynamic as well as the ability to play in 1st and 3rd person. My biggest gripe with the game is the amount of loading screens were does wear on me from time to time.

I'm no Bethesda fanboy I didn't finish fallout 3 and would of give fallout 4 a rating of 6. And even though ino it done alot of individual things better than starfield it wasn't as fun and that's what this game is fun the most important thing for a game to be fun.

Funny Thing is, that these Screens add nothing but Time Waste, there is Mods out there already who remove all these Screens and Animations, and what can i say... there is almost no loading time at all so why do these Long Butt Animations exist at all?
And Todds talking about this beeing Next Gen is like a slap in the Face.
There is nothing Next Gen here, nothing. No DLSS No Raytracing No Pathtracing and the same Textures and Models already seen in the Fallout Series, even down to the same Voiceactors over and over again, lots of wasted Potential and bad Performance even with the best Hardware available on the Market right now, and then Todd dares to tell people to buy better Hardware cause its next gen?
Yes it may be Bugthesdas biggest Game yet, still its not what it was advertised at.

The performance on PC is an absolute joke, especially if you're using a Nidia GPU. People with low spec systems have trouble running the game. People with high spec systems have trouble running the game. It's a disgrace that the modding community had to make custom patches and manually introduce DLSS because the developers of the game has failed to do this themselves. The developers keeps getting away with this because of the Bethesda fanbase is too forgiving.

Sprawling handcrafted cities that are fully explorable and more. All the mechanics looting and crime, respect and hate, companionship, lock picking, factions, quests that even have a backstory (even though some are random as hell.) Base and ship building you can even own a fleet of ships and make your own trade routed to automatically farm other resources from multiple outposts on multiple planets. The game is huge.

Proper physics like gravity, items stay where you place them and gravity has a huge effect on derelict ships in space.

There are some things people get over dramatic about, little things that should not even matter "this random population city generated npc is looking at me funny" there are hundreds of "random" generated npcs dont expect them all to look handcrafted like main story ones. "You cant explore the planet and it has borders" have you ever walked too france from the uk, newsflash true 1 to 1 walking sucks.

Game is beautiful, good graphics and clever usage of light effects ray traced shadows and sprawling landscapes that have there physical feel too them.

Lots to do feels like. Masseffect, bioshock, star citizen, no mans sky, fallout in space all wrapped into 1 neat package.

If you like any of them games you will love starfield.

There is NO exploration, of either planets or space. You can walk around a planet only if there is already something there, and that something is generally maximally a 20 minute dungen, but expect shorter or even just a singular cardbord npc with his little garbage quest. There can be """"locations""" around where you landed and all you need to do to get to them is walk in a straight line without any challenges or enemies for 3-5 minutes (no vehicles, not even a skyrim horse reskinned as a bike} and when you get there it turns out the location is an empty **** crater or an empty **** cave. In all of my gameplay i found only one planet that wasnt some flavor of washed out wasteland, and it was the first city hub planet the main plot wants you to go... and of course it did keep up with bethesda tradition to make any city painfully small.

Only time when you can fly your ship is in a planets orbit, which will be generally empty but if youre especially lucky you will get some boring ass space combat or maybe youll get to dock in a space station (thats a one button press and like 2 loading screens - one for docking and one to get out of the ship, the reverse i also true for leaving the station). Everything else concerning space travel? thats a button press or going into map menu and a **** of loading screens.
Want to go to a different landing zone on a planet? thats a loadin
Want to go to a different planet or moon in the system? thats a loadin
Want to go to a different solar system? thats a loadin
The strongest thing from previous bethesda games - freedom to manually explore huge interesting open world - yea that aint here.

Gunplay is boring but servicable - not much to write about here, just a less impactfull version of fallout 4's, and less freedom when it comes to weapon customization.

There is a base building thing, didnt touch it, didnt really want a base on a rocky wasteland.

Npcs and companions are still very much cardboard, dialogues are still mainly inconsequential. And yes all the characters do look like alien meatpuppets pretending to be human, did you expect anything else?(the did trigger an uncany valley feeling a lot for me)

Leveling system - yea, its just ripoff from fallout 4 with even more boring perks - its either straight numerical upgrades or unlocking basic abilities that you probably shouldve had from begining. No wait, there more exctining perks - unlocking new food to cook...

Graphics, definitely are there, game looks alright when it wants to, but optimisation on PC is a **** joke, you cant even change basic settings like texture quality or antyaliasing, you need to manually go into the gamefiles with a notepad to make the game run comfortably. and also Tod's "God's" Howard's response to apparent lack of optimisation is also a **** joke. Especially when you can mod skyrim to look better and run better at the same time.

Artstyle is one of two things this game did well, weapon models, ships suits all have great design, but that will not compell you to play this boringh ****
Second thing is actally very small but it is there - new and fresh lockpicking system that actually uses your brain instead of your patience and lockpick supply.

All in all, you'd do far better just playing skyrim again, or fallout, of no mans sky. There is no space in this game or in the gaming world for this game, especially since company that made it already made superior games with the same formula.

The space travel aspect in the game is merely a shallow feature that allows you to say, "Hey, you can travel in space," without much actual gameplay involved. Rather than accessing other planets through a physical menu, you access them through an interactive menu while onboard your ship.

During my early gameplay, I had a ship battle, but there haven't been any significant encounters since. However, it's possible that these mechanics become more prevalent later in the game. Overall, the game feels like Fallout 4 set in space, albeit without the VATS system. The gameplay, loot gathering, and usage of loot resemble Fallout 4, and it doesn't bring much novel to the table. Unfortunately, there are two major flaws that significantly detract from the game.

Firstly, the absence of land vehicles other than walking is incredibly frustrating. Sprinting depletes your oxygen rapidly, and traveling from point A to point B takes a frustratingly long time due to the vast expanses of empty space between them.

Secondly, unlike in Fallout, where you could spot distant landmarks and explore the areas in between, this game lacks that sense of discovery. Either the long-distance visuals don't appear until you're closer, or there genuinely isn't much of interest on each planet.

Despite boasting a staggering number of 1000 planets to explore, it fails to capture the same sense of exploration found in Fallout or Skyrim. The issue might stem from the arduousness of traveling around, especially from point A to point B.

On the positive side, the game mechanics are solid and offer a diverse range of activities. Crafting weapons, armor, ship upgrades, and mining minerals form an intricate system. However, it would have been more enjoyable if the developers had focused on improving the content of a smaller number of planets, rather than spreading themselves thin over 10000 planets.

Additionally, the game suffers from technical issues. HDR is glitchy, the lack of an FOV slider and brightness adjustment is noticeable, and the lighting is subpar for a next-gen game. The PC optimization is questionable, although it's worth noting that some players forget that DLSS is not available in this game, causing performance struggles for those with lower-end GPUs.

Overall, I would rate the game a 6/10. If they were to address some key issues by adding a land vehicle, fixing HDR, introducing an FOV slider, and implementing DLSS, the score could potentially reach a 7/10. To further improve, they should focus on creating more points of interest on fewer planets, as the current quantity feels gimmicky. With such changes, the game could potentially earn a 9/10 rating.

I'm not typically into single player games for various reasons but man I've had a great time with starfield. Yes it's not perfect and there is a lot of room for improvement but that doesn't impact how much fun I've had with the game. I have 50+ game hours in the game currently(hard to say exactly with me having left the game open once or twice)

The ship builder has been a ton of fun, ship combat feels really nice without being overly complicated. The skills tree is extremely extensive and in depth. The powers have been my least cared about feature since they just aren't very impactful yet. I'm currently on the last story mission, and man I love how the story works here.

A dead, barren wasteland filled to the brim with tedious menus and loading screens, horrible AI and writing. Any second spent on this game is a second wasted.

Thank you, Starfield, for giving me a reason to cancel my gamepass. Money saved.

Garbage game that doesn't live up to previous Bethesda titles and forced "preferred pronouns" that are forced on people. They say it's not a big deal, but then they ban mods that remove the "preferred pronoun" bs.

Have fun with all the refunds people will be getting.

Starfield is a big step up from previous Bethesda games. Almost every aspect was improved upon. That said, it's still a Bethesda game as far as gameplay goes. Very smooth launch as well.

My recommendation on Starfield right now is to wait 1 or 2 months and see what Bethesta can fix in terms of bugs and issues. Some of the issues might sadly be too problematic to even fix. Combat AI for example. But until these issues are sorted, the game is simply not worth playing - knowing it could be done better. The game is only 4 out of 10 until these fixes go through.

Fallout 4 but somehow with less exploration, worse performance, worse main story pacing and worse skills/perks. This game is like have a really nice but old Porsche that doesn't start but looks great, the AC and all of the stuff inside looks and works really well, what's the point?

Underwhelming and underexplained skills and perks which have a MASSIVE impact on your early-mid game

Gunplay varies from okay to good but all the different pistols feel the same regardless of what damage they do, the .43 magnum that does 129 damage sounds like a pea shooter, the .27 that does 14 damage sounds like a handcannon, go figure, also not to be confused with the other .27 which does 12 damage that also sounds like a pea shooter.

exploration is so useless here and dont feels like u ever left the last system or planet...

10 loading screens to come to the next system from 1 city to another... and they are all meaningless steps...

i mean u could also have a rick and morty portal gun and thats it... 1 loading screen and bye fake "space exploration" wich does not exist at all... and we would at least got not a loading screen simulation...

i am sorry bethesda but nobody of you played ever an exploration game like no mans sky... this feels immersive... this even has a story... this even has no walls and 100 restrictions like your "open world"... in NMS i can actually explore and have a progress with my ships and weapons and upgrades and then u can quest too... and have a interesting deep story!!! Performance and optimization is abysimal. Bethesda answer to that is basically "just buy better hardware and it will run well", whilst even the highest end of hardware available to mankind can't maintain 60fps @native 4k - wiithout RT.

With that matter aside, the actual gameplay is a time sink with endless grind and repetition. After 10 hours, everything feels like hard labour and

Peopl complain about this game non having seamless landings, hyperdrive etc.. It is a space RPG game, not a space sim, if you expect it to be like Elite Dangerous or Starcitizen then you're just wrong ... and should stop comparing it with them.

Manually landing and travelling from planet to planet is fun at the beginning, but then become boring in the long term. Beside, you can still

The graphics are stunning (on PC, it's better to use a custom LUTs mod called "NaturaLUTS" to remove the green filter and have better contrast), the dynamic weather is stunning, every single planet and asteroid are dynamically orbiting, so what you see is actually the current state of the system, and the game even has eclipses...

I'll put a 10/10 just to balance the wrong/incorrect reviews.

I fell in love with Starfield. It's my cup of sci-fi and I can't wait to spend the next thirty, fifty, maybe seventy hours here. I enjoy the exploration, the shootouts, the art style, the ship building, and the diverse worlds. I gratefully acknowledge the good optimization and the absence of major bugs. But I can't overlook the flaws. There are bad animations, ugly faces and repetitive moments.[Issue#329]

In a year dominated by sequels to franchise favorites, there was a hope that Starfield would carve its own path to success. While the team at Bethesda should be commended for taking such a big swing, there’s no denying that the game doesn’t feel like a cohesive work. Maybe continued support and future sequels will make something more meaningful out of a work that is clearly deeply enamored with both science fiction and space exploration. Unforunately, this first launch has had far more mixed results than desired.
