I feel like the game could become great by just adjusting some numbers and adding minor qol changes and just throwing in as much new and maybe even unbalanced stuff as they can. But they won't. The Devs have shown time and time again, that they want to move in the opposite direction of what the community wants.

There's just a severe lack of content in every single aspect like combat, loot, crafting and social. This sounds exaggerated, but there are actually dozens of small indie games with multiple times the amount of depth in every single aspect of the game.
Now, instead of even trying to fix the problems, the devs decided to slow down the game in every single patch. It's getting slower and more boring by the day, which definitely isn't the right direction here according to the community.

If the game was just fixed it might very well be an above average game, if the devs worked together with the community it might even become a good game. They somehow managed to nerf the game from a solid 5 to a 2-3 at best, though, so lets not get our hopes up.

I keep getting crap gear 1500 points lower than what I'm wearing. The stats on the gear sucks, and you can only change one and the options you get are not impressive or worth the gold! And now the patch notes and a bunch of things being nerfed just isn't cool. Yet the mobs will still stun lock you, or overkill you with poison, fire, ice whatever they want. Not to mention hell tides now cost more to get the mystery chest that drops unimpressive gear 98% of the time it seems. So yeah I feel it was a waste of $90 bucks and we each got a copy. We mostly live paycheck to paycheck but made sure to save up to buy it so we could play early and all that. The story was good, we've enjoyed diablo 3 in the past. This just isn't great and kinda sad it is already going downhill. I think we've learned a lesson though and won't be pre-ordering any more games until they've been out a while so we can see where they are going and if they are worth it. Expand

The cost is far too high for a very unpolished game
One of the five classes (sorcerer) is forced to be a melee character in mid/late game
The Devs are clearly focused on making this an arpc without action, the patches simply slow down and make the game very slow. If you want to spend 10 hours having some fun then spending your time waiting for cooldowns and not having much to do in end

Absolutely horrendous nerfs to just about everything in the game in the most recent patch (July '23), with no attention given to any of the legitimate and easy to implement QOL improvements requested by the player base. If you were thinking about buying D4, don't. It has a lot of potential but the devs have made it clear that they don't care about player experience.

That loyalty has since been plagued by incredible ignorance and ineptitude by the developers leaving the game feeling like an over-whittled plank of driftwood, with none of it's luster or sheen left over from the fine mahogany log it took years to cultivate.

There is a framework here that could have allowed stats and aspects to prop up nearly any build a player wished to build, but instead created the same niche-only game design we've seen from so many ARPGs in the last decade. With constant dilution hitting the games mechanics, the resulting gunk has little substance, and causes an already unpleasant grind to feel akin to quicksand.

On the cusp of their first season, the final legs of this framework are being shattered, and splintered, leaving little reason to attend.

I loved being able to pop in once or twice a week for a couple hours and actually make some progress. The latest patch was just created to make everything take so much longer to get through. I'm not sure if they just needed to slow things down to keep the more hardcore players going until they could create more content or what the reasoning was, but if they wanted to go this route, it would have just been nice to have an option for more of a casual option vs a hardcore player option where they could choose that more brutal experience. That may not be realistic, but I think they went too far too fast and just crushed my hopes for this game.

I remember a few of the reviews I watched stated that the game was for the more casual player that loved Diablo 2 and wanted to experience some of that nostalgia. That is why I purchased the game for $70 in the first place, but I feel like that was money well wasted at this point. Disappointing turn of events for sure.

At launch, the game was a slog at best - player power kept in check by every enemy levelling up alongside you, from start to finish. There is no feeling powerful in this game, even in the starting area. But with Patch 1.1, player power and progression has been significantly gimped even further, to the point where you have to wonder what the motive could possibly be.

And I think the motive is to cover up the fact that the game lacks any sort of depth or interesting loot whatsoever. Gems are worthless. Uniques are just souped up rares with a random aspect on em, that you can extract. Items don't have any identity beyond arrow up or arrow down. Crafting is basically nonexistent, and choice of skills and character builds has been dumbed down even compared to Diablo 3.

It's the action RPG without action, without interesting loot, without depth in character builds, and also you'll be running across the entire world - a huge empty map - for fetch quests over and over. Just walking. And you don't get a mount until you beat the main campaign for some reason.

Also, they're pinging you to check out and preview microtransactions whenever a new one becomes available... each costing upwards of a third of what you paid for the game. Complete insanity.

On merit of its game systems, it's not worth playing BUT
    Combat and visuals are solid.
Story, writing and voice acting is solid.
For those two, I award one point each. If you *really* care about the lore, consider dragging yourself through the campaign once. 2/10

New game released with broken mechanic and stats, example: the most basic stat in arpg "Resistance" is broken upon game release, In live stream, dev team acknowledge resistance is FUBAR, it MIGHT get fix by season 2, because it’s complex, maybe beyond season 2.

QoL improvement, low inventory space/stash, game are zoom in too close make vision area small, Horse speed etc, paragon board reset cost, bloated gear stats, etc. just to name a few

Yes it's a new game just released, there will be areas need improvement. after 1.5 month of hearing players feedback, season 1 patch released, what did they do? they focus on NERF all class, not balance each class, they blanket nerf the class. result? those strong class became average, those weak class got even weaker to a point not enjoyable, unless you do cookie cutter builds.

How bad is the patch? remembers dev team acknowledge "Resistance" is broken, which cost player lost a layer of defense, this effect most on the sorcerer class because it's main stats INT are link to the "resistance", so the class is naturally in a defense stats disadvantages, most build had to sacrifice offense skill slot to fit in 3~4 defense skill to make builds efficient.

Guess what dev team did in Season 1 patch, they remove the armor gems replaced with "Resistance" heart (it new name for gems). LOWER THE BASE ARMOR FOR ALL CLASS. Reduce the CD reduction stats on gear (now the cd are longer).

How they address the shallow content with season 1 patch? they REDUCE the XP gain from those 3 repeat activity, so now it will take us longer to reach our goal.

Those are just few example of the disconnect from the dev team. If refund is available, I'll do it in a heart beat.

BTW, guess what dev team told the player on live stream 3 week after game release, when they were asked about content, "it's ok to stop playing". W.T.F, We paid for the game, and you tell us not to play it? so we don't complain the game's short coming, which is a direct reflection on the dev team?

Would you buy a game when dev told it's ok not to play it?

And it's an ARPG where the developers are slowing down an already slow game, by keeping mob density low, nerfing multiplicative damage, nerfing item drop rates, nerfing currency drop rates and nerfing overall XP.

So it's a dead world, singleplayer, slog of an RPG, right now.

All this is made worse with a terrible user interface, memory leak issues, and a development team that ran out of content at like level 70. There is nothing to do from 70 to 100.

In addition, Season 1 was supposed to introduce something innovative and they just reused a mechanic from Diablo 3. The developers are trying to artificially slow leveling so people don't ever reach 70+.

Before the patch I would have rated it a 7/10, good but with room for improvement. But after the patch, they have made every single aspect of the late game significantly worse, apart from nightmare dungeons. Helltide has become essentially useless, as the finder drop rate has been lowered to the point that you can only reliably farm one mystery chest per event, and often these chests have nothing but garbage in them. Besides making the game worse, none of the problems were ever addressed. Good loot drops are so rare that you hardly, if ever, change gear between levels 70-90. Mob density is low relative to other games. Only a few viable builds for late game play. Given two point though, because at least, at time of this writing, there is no pay to win/loot box options. I've played for hundreds of hours mostly thanks to PVP as a Barbarian, but the state of the game currently has destroyed Barbarian in PVP.
I could break even in kills against a Rogue taking advantage of the poison damage bug or a Druid with a near permanent barrier, but now they just win every match every time due to the massive dip in damage I can do and damage I can take.

    - Build experimentation at the end game is highly discouraged by making it extremely time consuming with an extreme gold cost. It costs nearly 25 Million gold to undo a Paragon board, and you have to manually undo all 225 paragon points if you're going completely fresh.

    - The formula for calculating damage in the game is heavily reliant on having critical hit damage and vulnerable damage, with all other forms of damage boost being treated the same because they're added together so long as their condition is met.

    - The damage formula makes itemization rely on very specific stats to even be viable in the end game.

    - A lot of the game is waiting to engage, which has only gotten worse with the cooldown reduction stat being cut by 30%.
Too many classes have certain defensive abilities which are required to be active in order to survive basic combat.

    - The rarity of good items combined with aspects having perfect rolls adds another layer of restriction of experimenting with new builds. If you don't have an aspect to reapply to your item if your experiment doesn't pan out, you're either stuck with a weaker build or stuck playing your current build until you can find an aspect to reapply.

    - Getting loot doesn't feel good.
Unique items on Barbarian are ranked by their vendor sale value.
Legendary items don't automatically mean you're going to find something with great stats.
You have to scan nearly every Ancestral yellow item that drops to make sure you don't accidentally sell off or destroy something that actually rolled well.
Without a way to filter loot to what you specifically want or need, you waste a lot of time just looking at items that 95% of the time you're going to throw away.

The game doesn't respect your time. It's not midcore friendly.

I hope that in a year or two Diablo 4 is at least as good as Diablo 3. The final season of Diablo 3 really hyped me up -- they added a bunch of quality of life things that the player base had wanted for a long time and I felt very optimistic that Diablo 4 would be the best Diablo game yet. The reality is, the lack of stash space makes it impossible to play multiple classes and makes getting loot a bad thing when that's supposed to be a fun part of the game, WE CAN'T EVEN SAVE BUILDS, and they keep nerfing the game and making it even more grindy and boring. Don't buy it, wait until they hopefully improve the game instead of continuing to burn it to the ground. Expand

And then, I caved. A couple of my kids picked up D4 and had some amazing things to say. It had been two years since I'd even opened Battle.net. But, I went for it. And, to my surprise, while things were not perfect, I loved it! The graphics, the story, the attention to small details, most of it was truly amazing. And, it seemed as though the development team was listening to the users about the issues and future directions that would make the game more fun.

How wrong I was. Nothing has changed. This Blizzard is not, and never will be, the Blizzard that understands its gaming audience and seeks to make the best game it can. This Blizzard, rather, is the one that wants to find every possible way to squeeze every penny it can from it's "asset". They've clearly adopted a profit-over-player mentality. If you're wondering what all the fuss is about, here's the scoop. Blizzard released the game with what they felt was too much power in the hands of the players. Their content was being conquered too easily for their liking.

The appropriate way to fix this? CREATE NEW, MORE CHALLENGING CONTENT.

This could have kept the players engaged and been a huge win. Add another tier of content, or another chapter to the campaign. Create a more challenging pile of content for those players creating the great builds. Hell, I realize this is a lot of work, so in the interim, just toss in a couple new seriously difficult bosses for players to work toward conquering. Just give us new challenges. But instead, Blizzard decided the best thing was to take away our toys and tools for meeting these challenges.

Blizzard's response was a massive nerf across the board of player power. No content actually changed. Nothing was added to make the game more enjoyable, more engaging. But power was nerfed, speed of progression was nerfed, speed of acquiring gear was nerfed. So, the same exact content, but now all the builds people had been working toward, milestones they'd achieved, were all set back, and everything was made more work, more difficult.

Just, wow. How a game developer could be SO out of touch with it's players is just unreal. The real Blizzard is dead, so I'm going to retire my Battle.net client once and for all.

As is, the game is really a zero, but I'm giving 2/10 because I honestly truly enjoyed the campaign and the state of the game before the patch. I was leveling, enjoying reaching milestones in the build I was creating. And then, BAM. It's like I was set back from 80 to 50, even though my character was still level 80. And now getting back to the same level wasn't even possible, and working toward getting as close as possible would take much, much longer. No thanks. I play games to have fun, a privilege for which I'd happily pay. But Blizzard thinks they need to hold my attention by just making everything I do take longer. Yeah, no. Bye.

    3. Lack of end game content. There are 2 bosses in endgame currently. Why not re-use some campaign bosses as endgame bosses in the meantime while you create more new bosses for the game? The loot they drop is terrible... make them have a higher chance of dropping uber uniques so people have a reason to replay these bosses more than once per character. We cant trade uniques and seasons only last 3 months so who does it hurt if a player got one of these? Whats the harm?

    4. 'Uber uniques'... I understand the carrot on a stick helps arpg games last longer but there is no carrot when the chances of getting one are rarer than winning a large sum in the lottery.
I would love to see one of these items at somepoint in my life.

    5. Scaling is very bad. At the endgame, there is a sudden extreme incline in difficulty. Nightmare level 100 and uber lilith are so far ahead of anything below, it makes for a very poor difficulty curve.

There are many more gripes with the game but these are the main points of issue.

I liked the story and the gameplay feels good but there are so many issues with the game right now so i have to give it a low review.

I didn't think I would witness that same thing so quickly with Diablo 4. I get it, the overwhelming majority of game companies want money far more then they want a happy player base. The story was pretty good, but ends on a big cliffhanger and some questionable choices, hence not a score of 0.

The entire rest of the game is a complete joke, nothing seems finished or thought out, you get forcefully and unnaturally slowed down at every possible point in the game.

The recent patch notes prior to the first season are just the tip of the iceberg, blizzard is absolutely tone deaf and somehow managed to kill of the last few parts of the game that were even remotely rewarding.

If you want to play the first season, you better not choose you class by playstyle or lore preference, because chances are, you will be unable to complete the endgame.
You need to look up guides and third party sites, to make absolutely SURE, that your favorite class did not just get gutted SO HARD, that it is now, in the truest sense of the word, UNVIABLE.

It is truly baffling and kinda scary, how incompetent the people in charge at a company this big can be. Thinking about how much money is involved here and how casually such brand ruining decisions are being made is crazy. Chances are, after the live service part of the game flops, some pretty wild excuses will be made to explain it.

But what started as a success soon became a baffling and frustrating experience for the player base.

The Diablo 4 team, dissatisfied with how players were engaging with the game they had created, began to implement drastic changes. Data mining player behavior, they initiated a series of continuous alterations that shifted the gameplay experience in the opposite direction from even where it was at launch.

Classes were nerfed, Mob density was reduced, XP gains were slowed to a crawl, and It felt as if the players had become nothing more than data points, mere rows in an Excel spreadsheet, with their preferences and playstyles disregarded.

Players had essentially paid to beta test a game, only to have the rug pulled out from under them as the developers unilaterally decided to reshape the game in a way that did not align with player interests. The community's enjoyment and investment were seemingly irrelevant as the game underwent transformation after transformation.

What could have been a transparent dialogue between developers and players turned into a one-sided conversation where the voice of the community was ignored. Trust was broken, and a sense of betrayal permeated the player base.

The graphics, sound, and potential depth of "Diablo 4" became overshadowed by this erratic development process. It's challenging to invest time and energy into a game that feels like shifting sands.

In its current state, "Diablo 4" serves as a stark reminder that player engagement and loyalty cannot be taken for granted. A game's success is built not only on strong mechanics and captivating storytelling but also on a respectful and symbiotic relationship between developers and players. Without that, even the most promising titles can lose their way and their audience. "Diablo 4" sadly stands as a testament to this truth, a once-promising game brought low by a lack of communication, empathy, and respect for its community.

The game runs out of steam even before you reach max level, which is where a good ARPG should just be getting started.

The recent patch was quite a let down as well. The heavy-handed nerfs are the least of the problems with the game right now actually. The itemization system is boring and unrewarding. Drops are not exciting at all. In fact, drops have zero value until you teleport back to town and sort through countless lines of text to determine if anything is of use. That's like a casino where, instead of getting a payout at slot machine when you hit, you instead get a token that you have to take to the main desk to find out if it's worth anything. It's not exciting.

The game does get a few things right, however. The sound design is amazing. Playing through the campaign was enjoyable. The NPCs are well-acted, especially those you encounter through the main story. However, your character's voice lines are weird and out of place at times.

I expect this game to get better over time with multiple patch cycles and a lot of development that, hopefully, will actually incorporate some of the feedback from the community. In its present state, however, there are much better games to spend your money on. If you're looking to sink some time into some great ARPGs, check out PoE (well worth the time it takes to learn its systems), Grim Dawn, or even Last Epoch, although that one needs quite a bit of time to cook as well.

I'm not here to review bomb the game. The newest patch release is a big issue, but not the only issue. The bottom line is this game is not worth $76, not even close and I'm certainly not going to be buying any seasonal pass. And this is coming from someone who have played and enjoyed both Diablo 2 and Diablo 3.

    1. Storyline is boring. I know a lot of people don't play Diablo for the plots, but to me it's still an RPG game. Blood and gore is fine, but if that's the only thing you offer players, it gets repetitive and nobody cares. Any good storyteller knows that you have to balance the good and bad, levity with seriousness. Diablo has none of that.

    2. The LAG is INSANE for a mostly single player game. I'm constantly running in place like I'm playing an MMORPG with 40 people casting spells on my screen, and I know it's not on my side because I can log off immediately and get in another online game and the lag would be totally normal. This is tolerable in early games because of how easy it is, but a complete disaster when you get into nightmare dungeons later. At higher level, the game is literally unplayable when the lag hits. To say this about a single player game is absolutely crazy.

    3. Patch 1.1 made things a lot worse. It was supposed to be a class rebalance, to nerf OP builds and elevate others. It did neither. Necromancer is the only class I played, the OP build is still OP, just a little less so, other builds are still trash, but multiple game mechanics are made harder. This essentially rewarded all the early players who exploited glitches and broken mechanics to get to lvl 100 and farmed out all the best loots, while punishing new players with a much steeper grinding curve and difficulty level. The Helltide used to be the place to farm gear, but the new changes made it irrelevant. I literally could not farm 250 shards in an hour to open even just one mystery box, when I used to be able to do 2-3 an hour consistently. Again, punishing new players who didn't start on Day 1 or casual players who just want to take their time.

The list of issues with Diablo 4 goes on, I could keep going, but I won't, because I literally don't care about this game anymore. When you are looking at a sinking ship, you don't need to stand there and list out all the bad decisions that led to this juncture, you just need to get the hell off that ship.

The $76 was a scam, for maybe 20 hours of decent gameplay that reminded me of the D2 or D3 I used to enjoy. That's why I give this game 2 points. And now they want to charge more money for more content?

No thanks. Time to move on.

There isn't much else to like here. The game play is a combination of Diablo 3 and World of Warcraft with some inspiration from Lost Ark and Path of Exile thrown in. Most bosses are either simple or have mechanics directly copied from Path of Exile.

The development philosophy seems to be the standard one from Blizzard. Players will take turns being powerful. However, their concept of what powerful should be is hilariously out of tune with the rest of the ARPG market. The same way your character plays at level 5 is likely to be the way it plays at level 100 unless you get perfect gear.

The worst part of the game is that it isn't fun. You will be pulled forward by the feeling of completing the story and leveling to get to the next tier of content from levels 1-50. Once you get to the next tier you will find that the fun falls off. Gear doesn't make major changes to your character and nothing on the Paragon board does either.

Worst of all, the developers have a philosophy that will result in your character becoming less powerful if you are playing something that is above C tier. Since the power curves are still almost exactly the same as they were before their most recent path 1.10 it seems very likely the Nerf bat will be hitting again.

The game has graphical hitches randomly on my 3080 where whole seconds will freeze. Likely, there is something wrong with their texture streaming. This is when I am in the middle of a fight with bosses or other mobs, so it isn't something I would expect. I'm using an AMD 5600 with a Western Digital Black drive. If you are on a similar (or lower) setup there is a good chance you will have glitches.

The game is also exceedingly buggy in ways that are baffling. One quest requires you to change your in-game FPS to make it so that you can complete it. You will be trapped at a wall that you can't kill with NPCs that are supposed to kill it unless you zone into the dungeon with 1 FPS.

That's the kind of game you are playing. The design philosophy is one of tedium and the game play is tied to your FPS.

The game has the potential to be very good, and has a very high potential ceiling as far as score goes. However, until the developers actually begin to listen to player feedback, the low score is deserved. 2/10

Especially I can not recommend the current state of Diablo IV as the priority of updates and fixes seems to be to nerf various parts of the game (like unnecessarily extending the "leave dungeon" portal from 3 seconds to 5, so now your character just stands there idling for 2 seconds), some fixes even coming in on the same day but big requested changes by the community are not on the priority list. Additionally, the patch before the first season revealed their poor view of what actually needs dev-work and leaves a sour taste for upcoming content, patches or even fixes (in Blizzard fashion likely more nerfs to slow down progress).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game started off so well with a great story, until you hit endgame. If you want to keep up with everyone else and be capable you get one class option... If you want to be even able to attempt success as a sorcerer, you get one build option... your forced into using shards, with one adjustable spell slot. And your pick through paragon board and skillset must be exact or it will fall flat, NO room to experiment and have fun with other builds, even with 12k health you will still get 1 shot by EVERYTHING that is with every AC and Health increase available on the paragon board. Even using max rolled disobedience with God-rolled gear... even if you get the 840 item level weapon, a level 70 rogue or druid or barbarian with low rolled gear will survive better and deal more damage. And have options. I play magic based games for the fantasy of being a sorcerer/wizard/mage with the power of fire ice and lightning and that's what appeals to me, and I thought i could find here. To be able to kill the endgame boss as sorcerer you have to bring 3 extra armor pieces and swap mid combat. The number one defense we would have been entirely unfunctional which is resist all elements and specialized resistance to wielded magic. As well as instead of fixing this obviously RUINED class they keep buffing the enemies and making it harder, even level 100, invested heavily into defense, with very good gear, fully coordinated with high rolled stats and over 800 item level on everything, you will still get one shot by most everything during a helltide. The classes should balance, and all have options for different playstyles viable. But no, they say we built this game all around playing druids so druids can laugh at everyone else for being dumb enough not to pick druid.... I am sorry but I am very touchy about my size, I work really hard IRL to not be overweight. The idea of running around fat would just make me sick.... why would I want to fantasize that am? I understand for some it isn't a choice, and they can't help it, but it is very hard for me to not gain weight. Every other class can quickly burn down bosses and easily survive hordes. But for some reason as a sorcerer, your forced to have very slow damage to them until you stagger them, then you can kill quick, but if you don't swap gear in combat you can't get from staggered to dead fast enough. we should not have to work harder to play than other classes. There should be balance. Even people who play other classes feel sorry for us sorcerers and wish they would do something to improve our situation, but they just don't want people who would want to play sorcerers to enjoy their game. It's very saddening to me because I waited until reaching level 100 and unlocking full renown with very good gear and much time invested. I haven't even started the new season yet because of how disappointing the experience has been. I wouldn't mind starting over if playing a sorcerer actually mattered, but it doesn't. People can get chill and vulnerable easier with other classes/gear why do they need a sorcerer around? Why can't we have fun too? The story line is truly amazing, with wonderful cinematics. But all that that brings evaporates the instant you realize how unfair class balancing is. and we are playing another game that even though a gear says a certain percent, you cant trust it because they have adjusted to performance of the metrics to not match what the gear says it should do, 30% should be 30% period.... if you get above 100% resist you should be healed for what goes over it, and let the stat actually function. The nerf patch appear to be a manipulative ploy to kill the eternal realm so that players move to Seasonal content so Blizzard can push Battle Pass.

Not that it matters, because numerous players can't login to try Season 1 content due to server issues.

These devs are certainly not OG Blizzard North quality, are tone deaf and borderline incompetent.

It’s almost like Diablo 4 developers are consciously fighting against everything that made classic Diablo fun. [Issue#262, p.80]

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.

The best Blizzard launch in a long time and a worthy game to be called Diablo.
