Story is decent with great moments but is stunted by Blizzard's design philosophy. From pre-launch to Season 1, the management of the game has been a fiasco, with a sham of a tournament, frequent crashing (which makes Hardcore mode terrifying to consider) that was not solved as promised with v1.1.0, and tonedeaf patches seemingly intentionally meant to stunt the community's progress and strongarm players into exposure to monetization. The more i play this game, the more its apparent that it was pushed out incomplete, or intentionally gutted to 'sell' improvements in future versions for retention. I can't even find youtube video's out there with a positive air to them to keep me feeling at least neutral about a game which's frequent memory leaks barely permit me to play. Tell Rod to get his head out of his Malignant Tunnel and go fix this **** game. Expand

    - The gameplay has a good base
    - The very start and end of the campaign are good

    Now the bad :
    - The reste of the campaign is a meaningless blob
    - The game tries REALLY hard to look complex and deep with weird affixes on items but is actually shallow
    - The open world is just a way to justify chores to impose on the player before they can enjoy "the game"
    - Nothing actually feels really good. That's harsh but here's what I mean :
With the world and dungeons automatically scaling with your level, reaching a sweet upgrade in your talents makes no difference in the feeling of your fights. The same is true with gear, your get biggers stats but the enemies too. The wolves of the start of the game too, they will always be at your level. What a way to feel your progress !
Also most of the gear looks ... Too realistic ? There's no fantasy in the gear you find, and they all look like the boring grey boot you found in your first chest.
The game imposes you a lot of thing you will have to do before accessing the endgame which is SUPPOSED to be the sweet spot. And before you inflict yourself with tense if no hundreds of hours to get there, let me tell you, it's not. It's currently grinding dungeons. Which by the way are bad and boring and make you track back all the time and complete stupid objectives.

Also there is no actually sweet Legendary equipment. Most new effect is so conditional that they are a best boring and at worst just very bad. Unlike D3 for instance where I was excited to find some uniques because they allowed some sweet unique builds. OH I ALMOST FORGOT. Even if we had sweet unique legendaries, you couldnt do that because after a while the investment in your paragon board is so heavy that it would be easier to build another new character with a new build thant to respect the one you spent hundreds of hours on. I know, that's what we all asked for right ?

You thought that was bad ? Here's another :
You thought 70$ for an ... OK-ish game is expensive ? LOL Now you gotta add 10$ for each season if you don't want to be stuck with majorly lackluster rewards on your season. Season which has a very underwhelming new mechanic to boot. That's ... Almost OK in a F2P game but in a 70$ game, WHO ARE THEY KIDDING?!

Honestly if you want to play a relaxed arpg keep playing Diablo 3, if you like complexity stay on PoE and stop making my mistake and giving a chance to Blizzard, they are the worst.

It used to a be a great RPG experience of leveling up, getting better items, and then finding some cool stuff for each class. The story lines were great. Then came D4...

I used this as a guide for my Ice Sorc. (https://www.thegamer.com/diablo-4-sorcerer-ice-shards-build-guide/)

Visuals - Stunning! The game looks awesome!

Sound - The game is missing the iconic Diablo background sound track! I'm surprised they didn't use it anywhere!

    Story - I don't know. That's just it, I can't finish the game!

Game Play - Since the new patch 1.1, my character (Ice Sorc) can't do anything! I used to be able to handle a crowd of enemies with some ease or even some challenge with elites. Now forget it...I can't even handle 5 low level clans in the open maps and Dungeons, quests, and story line cannot be completed! They NERFd the hell out of me! I'm useless now!

My ~30 level Sorc would deal about 300 per Ice Shard, so about 1500 per enemy shot. Now I'm down to 250 (1250 Total) and the health for the bad guys went up about 15%. That makes my char 35% weaker! But wait...there is more! Now my cooldown was about 1-2 seconds, now it's 3! So...

    Before Patch
    1500 Damage Per Second
    ~1.5 second cool down
    Normal Enemy Health
CAN kill single enemies from distance before they get close enough.

    After Patch
    1250 Damage per Second
    ~3 second Cool Down
    Increased enemy health
CAN'T kill single enemies from distance before they get close enough.

So i have to run around, jump freeze, run away, all while my cooldowns are ready, then BAM the monsters on top of me again...

    UNPLAYBLE NOW! FIX IT!

Build up the bad to make it better, don't tear down the good. I've been playing since Diablo II. I almost deleted my Sorcerer and uninstalled this game. But I have faith that yalls at Blizzard can fix it.

For context, I played Diablo 2 extensively. I played Diablo 3 and all expansions extensively. And I was a pre-order victim of Diablo 4. I have a level 80 rogue on the enteral realm and a level 25 rogue on Season 1.

The overall game is executed well in that it is mostly performant. I like the switch to a live service model. I also think that the main campaign storyline and cinematics are the best they've been since Diablo 2. This compliments are the best I can give.

Eternal realm characters will run out of meaningful things to do starting around level 70. Many players have acknowledge a "rinse and repeat" formula for endgame and I can absolutely confirm this experience. What was great about the previous games was that while grindy, the hunt for great items made the time spent worth it. I am not sure how this team got loot so wrong, but it's not as rich as previous Diablo games. Arguably, the loot and item system is actually not even as good as Borderlands games, which borrowed heavily from the early Diablo games. It's one of a few things you wouldn't expect the dev and design team to miss. And miss they did. Which begs the question: why am I grinding through dungeons if the the reward system is so bad?

Season 1 only released yesterday and I already have a level 25 Rogue. I'm not sure I'll be coming back to Season 1 after yesterday's binge for the same reason as mentioned above: there isn't enough to do and there isn't enough to motivation to continue. The Malignant Hearts partially compensate for the heavy nerfs from the unpopular patch, but even these lose their new luster pretty quickly, and there are so few of them, and several offer buffs you'd never choose if you had a choice. Again, the loot and reward systems aren't compelling for a game franchise known for creating really fun and viable builds, and the endgame grind is so slow now that unlocking buffs through paragon boards means most of you (and I do mean statistically darn near all of you) reading this will never be able to achieve your build potential before the season ends in October. Even Diablo 3 seasons were better executed than this, which gets to my main criticism...

Diablo 4 lacks innovation and feels thin, chincy, flimsy and neutered as a result -- especially once you reach mid and endgame where the lack of innovation creates a boring "seen this before" experience. There are so many great ideas out there, ones that Blizzard probably considered at various points internally, and would mean so much to the community but also to their monetization and retention strategies. Examples include: the map is underutilized; world events are poorly timed; the commerce system is 20 years old and has somewhere between 3-5 currencies; co-op scaling is silly and has similar issues to the lackluster loot and reward system... I mean, we're talking about a $1B game 8 weeks after launch.

Why does a triple A game still feel like it's working out beta issues? The worse question is: why did they get so much wrong?

Oh sorry, they might as well not exist with that kind of drop rate... Oh! Shakogate happened. That fiasco left a bad taste in my mouth and I still feel second-hand embarrassed about it. Then patch 1.1 hits.. wow, talk about a middle finger to the player base! That completely gutted my class, my build and my overall game play experience. What was a slog before is now a corpse drag. Everything is longer, slower and harder. That's not fun. Imagine working hard for something and being proud of your earnings only for it to be stripped away. Without warning, I might add. it was mostly ok pre season 1 because we were patiently waiting and trying things before the seasons ( level 50 to 100 was still a chore doing the same Nightmare dungeons over and over ).
But now , the seasonal quest is like over in a couple of hours , letting us only with the new malignent gem system , a big nerf on the said OP builds , and as i progressed as level 40 , in unlocked the xp bonus ...... 3% ....... seriously ????????
We're in 2023 , we have lots of other games to play , we need to xp faster and to have FUN while doing it.
The game is not for casuals except if you rely on maxroll OP builds , but then they changed the meta again? i wish all builds would be viable as long as you spent your points and gear smartly but that's not the case ..... u have to go OP build and for that u have to grind for god rolls and uniques, and that wouldn't be that bad coz it is a diablo game but the gear is only good when level 100 ( i mean 725+ ) so why make it such a boring chore to get there.
helltides and world bosses also drop nothing good, rarely cosmetics , and almost never a good legendary or unique, they die in seconds in T4 when Uber Lilith one shot you at level 100 with a good twisting blade poison build......
I just don't get it ..... isn't a game suppose to deliver fun ? it is a boring fest for now.
only campaign is nice, then secondary quests ( but u get tired of it ) , renown will get boring in seasons if it implies to do all the same quests again.
diablo 2 is an old game , and diablo 3 was actually fun after a bad start. But this at the moment .... they are more interested by microtransactions ( they just made new loading screen where you can see only your character ... i can see only one reason for that when they don't adress content issues or ultra slow leveling ).
will probably be casualized as diablo 3 was. The game has potential, but it will be only when they will realize they are loosing their player base out of boredom

As you grow, you find that enemies scale with you, so you get weaker and weaker and you level up, only having the upper hand on some level up capstones. Same with items. The vast majority of item effects are just stat changes, very few have interesting effects that change how you play. And if you find something you like, there is a 50/50 that is a non viable build that you wouldn't know is horrible until you search for guides. Not to mention some classes are vastly weaker than others.
End game is grindy in a bad way, easily making it boring and not worth after the story is done. Side question are repeated over and over, same for dungeons and end game events.
Add that to the new Season 1, in which everything was nerfed to make it grindier and make players weaker, just signs for a continuation of a bad gameplay.

However, once you get past the aesthetics, Blizzard drastically missed the mark on itemization, end game content and progression, boring dungeon backtracking, no loot filter, no searching inventory, punishing build exploration, not having multiple viable builds per class, annoying quests that have dialog you cant skip, tedious explode on death mechanics (3 times?!), level scaling in all content, almost no social features, no trading even with people in your party, and so much more. And originally they were moving towards a 3rd person Diablo vs top down...

Despite all that, I was holding out hope for Season 1 since they seemed open to criticism, but not only did they do minimum effort by blanket tweaking existing item stats and skills, they did so in a way that was full nerf (minus the new socket gems). The worst part, is so many issues were already addressed in some form in Blizzard's own games (searching stash or Kanai's cube in D3, runewords in D2, etc), but that knowledge was not leveraged. This is an EA's Anthem-like example of the project having terrible direction at the high level... and I am sure issues were brought up by devs and ignored or pushed to the backlog.

As a game dev and long time Diablo player, I will be skipping this Season, and doubt they will have any substantial updates until maybe Season 4. See you in a year.

    • Underwhelming game at the moment. Lame campaign
    • Great visuals, good performance overall but lacks content.
    • First season is very dull, it needs way more content for what it costs
    • I didn't like the paid battle pass option, it feels very unpleasant after paying full price for the game (Game costs R$350,00 in Brazilian currency. For comparison, our minimum wage is around R$ 1350,00).

I would definitely ask for a refund if possible

Characters are 50 to 60 percent weaker and it takes so much longer leveling up when you die so much faster now because of the decrease of power! I'm sad to say the developers literally told us fans that they want to force you to play other builds and will nerf your current build if they feel fit at any time. If you enjoy playing a game where your hard work gets deleted and you have to make changes every patch then this game is for you. Sadly the game drifted away for what fans wanted and now we have weaker characters with no timeline on when a fix is coming or even if one is coming at all. Expand

Not a review bomber over the patch. I don't care about the patch because honestly I haven't been able to muster up the interest or energy to force myself to play long enough to reach high enough level for it to matter.

After the streamlined arcade game that was Diablo 3, Diablo 4 is an improvement. However, it's only that; an improvement over Diablo 3. Anyone who was looking for some manner of return to D1/D2, even in a small way, is going to be massively disappointed.

Virtually no D1/D2 gameplay elements make a comeback here. Instead, the mistakes made with D3 are mostly fixed or otherwise improved. As such, there's no identifying items, no scrolls of town portal, it's free and unlimited instead, no stat leveling, no weapons for everyone.

Combat is more varied now, as there's actually a use for more types of attacks and spells rather than havin to rely only on splash damage attacks to deal with the endless swarms like D3. There's still no real Attack button so your Sorcerers and Necromancers still can't use swords and spears and shields, but at the very least they actually hold their equipped weapons when performing their skills/spells, instead of havin them disappear like in D3.

The D3 "Infinite Potion" system is back, although at the very least they make it so that health pickups do not automatically heal you but give you "potions", of which you can hold 4-5 charges to heal when you need. If you run out of potion charges, you can't heal. It's a rather clumsy attempt to be more like D1/D2 without abandoning the streamlining of D3.

Unfortunately it seems they either ran out of ideas with the skills or ran out of time to make them feel particularly different. Worst offender I can see thus far is the Necromancer havin many different selectable skills that all basically amount to "Hold out hand and a colorful wave flies at enemy, damage is done".

The Sorcerer/Sorceress has the best skills, with plenty of variety and some D2-era skills returning to flesh it all out properly. Others unfortunately are severely lacking. The Barbarian is just boring, with only 3 shouts and a sequence of generic attacks that mostly amount to "swing weapon in a slightly different way". And they don't even get to use shields.

The Druid as well feels like it was the primary victim of the "ran out of time" hypothesis. Basically, there is no "transform" option for the Druid. Instead, you get a skill that is assigned to Wolf or Bear, and when you use it, you instantly transform into a Wolf or Bear. Then as soon as you use a different skill, you will instantly transform back human. Not only does this look underwhelming but it means you can't mix up skills, or do things like summon or command creatures while in Wolf/Bear form.

The game world itself, so far, has been very underwhelming. There is no more Act system; instead it's one big world, like an MMORPG. You also see other players wandering around at the same time as you, like an MMORPG. They can join in your battles or clog up the merchant's doorways with their 30 skeleton minions. There's also a ton of quests you can track at any time in a list, like an MMORPG. There's also no way of keeping track of completed quests, you can't coordinate sidequests with parties, and oftentimes you will end up with party members missing out on cutscenes or dialogue due to them being out of place. Some reviews I've seen have said you basically need a "designated clicker" because of this idiocy.

tl;dr, the more time I put into Diablo 4, the more miserable the experience gets. Each class has so few actual skills to play with that I'm switching out classes whenever I get bored and thus basically repeating all the starter quests.

By level 25, you've unlocked every possible skill, so all the skill points just go into "make it slightly stronger" or "add some mediocre little buff" for min-max play. There's no sense of POWER in any magic items like in D1/D2; unique items offer boosts like "+2% to Close Attack when Barrier is active" or "+4% to critical with each Core skill hit on a Stunned enemy"

None of that means anything to me. D2 items had things like "Ignore enemy armor", "+50 to strength", "Half poison duration", "50 charges of lvl 20 Teleport". Actual visible benefits.

I've been playing D3 and D2R leading up to D4's release. I finished D3 and put it away. It was fun the first time, but had 0 replayability. D2R I started about a month before D4 came out.

Now almost 2 months after D4 has come out, for every 1 hour I put into D4, I find myself putting 2 hours into D2R, and enjoying it much more.

Diablo 2 Resurrected just has more to offer than Diablo 4 in almost every way. Bigger and more interesting maps, more skills, more items and weapons, more interesting story, no long boring in-game cutscenes, and just a better, more fun experience overall.

This game is trash. Maybe they improve it over time, but I imagine the only thing they will improve on is further monetization. PoE is better in every level. You could buy a 5 dollar game from a small developer that has more depth. The only great thing about this game are the pathetic few cinematics. I generously give it a two, because it is functional...ish.

Hardly any to choose from - End Game is Dungeons which in it of themselves give no useful rewards - You're either dead or alive. There is no in-between - Affixes, Affixes, Affixes, Affixes -- Way to many useless ones.

I played without doing any research, and actually enjoyed the game until level 70.
Until the cardboard walls fell down and I realized that there was no possibility of an end game.

The game is so badly broken on a fundamental and foundational level, that the systems would need to be scrapped and redone entirely from the ground up for it to have any chance. No amount of patches or additional content will matter. Pile on the extra dev hires, it will only make things worse.

First off, the level scaling is the biggest problem. I'll explain why these devs are so incompetent and clueless to what they have actually done. (we learned this mistake 11 years ago in Oblivion, right?)

In Diablo 2, when you got a good rare or unique item, it would give you a rush of excitement. But it's not just because the item gave you a spike in power. It's because you were actually able to DO something with that power. You could take on greater challenges (higher level monsters) and be rewarded for that risk (with more exp, and higher level items and drops). What items could drop were actually tied to the MONSTER LEVEL, not the PLAYER LEVEL. Want a chance at a high level unique drop? Better be able to take on the challenge. This is completely stripped away in Diablo 4 and ruins the experience in every way.

It just can't possibly feel immersive or rewarding when everything changes around you. No longer are you exploring a finite and carefully crafted fantasy world, separate from your character. Instead we get this kind of amorphous experience. Like a fever dream where everything changes around your character.

The moment I saw a succubus at level 1. I knew there was something very, very wrong.
Monsters are supposed to not only increase in level and stats, but also in increasingly complex and challenging mechanics. There is a reason why zombies are traditionally a low level monster. They are slow and stupid. There are no memorable zones or enemies in the game, it all just bleeds together into one big pile of disappointment. There is no replayability.

There are certain systems that were carefully crafted by masters, and the devs really thought that they should innovate where it was already perfect. Foolish to say the least.

The story is great from the trailers, but painfully cringe and lackluster in delivery. Where is the real struggle? Where is the emotion? It just feels emtpy. I was on Lillith's side the entire time and then forced to kill her. No epic cutscenes of her fighting Tyrael. Just garbage. The voice acting was well above average, but there were clear miscommunications between the script writers and VA's (line's being delivered in ways that don't match the writing). This is basic stuff, Blizzard.

The graphics and combat are actually pretty good, that's why I give it a 2.

I could go on and on forever, but many others have said these things so I'll end it here.

The current devs should be ABSOLUTELY ASHAMED of themselves, and honestly just resign to save any self respect that they can cling onto. You are not game devs.

I will never be giving Blizzard another cent of my money.

    Bye forever!

What a disaster. Finally, a return to the darker art style and direction for diablo after the cartoony D3... only to be ruined completely.

So what's the problem? I think it's the fact that blizzard has no development talent left. They allowed the game to launch with what were obviously placeholder values on skill damage, aspects, and etc... resulting in abysmal balance across the game. One class has uniques and aspects that all provide a benefit at the cost of some sort of damage nerf or downside (Sorcerer). Yet.. all other classes get the beneft, + another benefit or even more damage! Why? No reason, you simply choose that class and have a worse experience than everyone else. There's no excitement getting loot like unqieus when you know that they will simply make your character less fun or worse.

They launched with exactly 1 pinnacle boss, enemies that can one shot you with no tells from offscreen, a defensive layer required by casters that simply does not work (with a promise to maybe fix it before season 2 possibly?), next to no variety for events and nearly no rewards for running them. In other words.. it's broken, unfinished, and there's no plans to address this in the short term.

You know what does work though? The battle pass, the cash shop, all functioning ways to pay blizzard more money for giving you the video game equivalent of unbaked sourdough sprinkled with ground up crickets with the assurance that around February 2024 they might consider baking it for you.

This isn't even getting into the comedy routines they call patches, where they give underperforming classes huge nerfs, globally nerf one of two working defense layers, make all the enemies harder, and then globally nerf more damage. Then they make new patches where they nerf the content to so that people can maybe start having fun playing the game again? What was the point of all that.

They make only one bit of content give decent XP and rewards, nerf other content, and then can't fathom why the open world is empty and dead. They have seasons where they want to reset the economy in a game with no economy because you can only trade rares. They release chase items that have such a low drop rate they are effectively not in the game, but then don't allow them to be traded. If they accidently make these items reasonable to obtain, that can be fixed in 1 hour, but again resistances will take two seasons to fix! They made it so the game loads all items in all players stashes that are visible into memory despite no way to access that information and no way to trade for most of what's in there.

This all points to Blizz being bereft of competent devs, vision, talent, and shows a complete lack of good faith towards releasing a fun and enjoyable game.

My prediction? They will use the abysmal failure of D4 to state that "their fans simply don't want a mature PC based game" and will move 100% to mobile in the future.

I finished the story and that was more than enough for me, even that was a grind. I have no desire to continue playing this game. I don't see the point, as I can't trade with other players, the NPC's have nothing real to say. But the biggest problem in my mind is how can they ship a game where, although there are tons of varied and interesting ways to build a character, each class only has approximately 1 good way to build your character in order to succeed. Some classes may have 2, and some may have 0.

I have no doubt that as long as they don't abandon this game like they have their last 5 or so, this game could be really good in about a year of updates.

Main campain and story is somewhat ok, but there are literally no middle, or endgame activities just the dungeons and the tree quests. Feel of power and progress is subpar. Levelling is slow and extremely boring. Game mechanics are unfun and punishing. The loot is subpar, there is nothing noteworthy to grind for. The developers are disconnected from the community. Overall bad game design. The whole game is a big cash grab. In its current state it's not recommended. The old Blizzard is really dead now! The IP is beyond saving. Expand

Diablo 3 was dumpster fire all the way till the reaper of souls, when it continued to be a dumpster, but somehow blizzard put out the fire... it stinks less but its still garbage.

Diablo 4 only has 2 things from the original games, the diablo look and feel that's about it. It looks like diablo, sounds like diablo but it doesnt play like diablo in any way. The excess of sufixes, the crap loot, the bad storage, the rubber banding, the bad patches, the boring and repetitive WE, the crap dungeons that are always the "same".

The dungeons are always about one of these things, and are divided in two halfs, in which you have to do the same crap all over and over game. It's always a mix of something like: slay all enemies open a door that was sealed, then get some crapy items ( 1 or 2, or even 3 or 4 ) to unseal another door ( among other things like free 6 prisioners or whatever, etc. Its always a random 2 things to do on every dungeon, repetitve, boring and unfulfilling.

The paragon points and hability points system are bad, but it could be worse i guess.

For a game that the main focus is item looting, the lack of decent storage, the non stackable hearts for the current season that just fill out the very limited storage its just appaling... how the heck did they think this would be ok?

So basicly diablo 4 is a empty husk of a game and, and tbh i had already decided that this would be the last game i would spend money on from blizzard, unless it proved me wrong by actually being a good game, which it isnt.

If like me, youre looking for a good rpg to play, look somewhere else, diablo 4 is not worth anyones money, and honestly, i dont like to pay to be a beta tester, because thats what everyone playing diablo 4 is, do not make the same mistake i did and many others, and stay away from blizzard, since they are killing their franchises left and right just to line up their pockets with your hard earned cash.

Act 1 story feels disjointed and isnt exciting at all, having to collect renown doesn't belong here in Diablo either. The statues are meh, really more of a distraction. All the defenders say the game gets good at endgame, I don't play endgame in Diablo, seasons dont do it for me. I enjoyed D3's campaign enough to go through it on all classes and it had seasons. For $120 the game should be good from the moment I create my first character. They charge a premium for the game and then try and lure you into micro transactions with xmogs and season passes. For me, Blizzard has gone from company that used to output great high quality games that you knew were going to be good to a business that wants to harvest as much coin off of their decade's old player base. Sorry Blizz but if you want to keep you loyal players, go back to the old way of making games. Games that have substance and not microtransactions, back to having actual engaging story to make the character feel invested, not the so far predictable drivel that is in D4. Go back to designing games and story in the way that built your loyal player base, but I fear that you are too far gone. Expand

The game quickly becomes boring, the story is not very interesting to tell the truth, nothing invites me to stay. I leveled a character to level 70, then uninstalled the game and won't go back.

What can we learn from what is happening now?

About the reviews: The "journalists" are not journalists, they are just sales influencers who give good ratings and highlight only the good sides of the product because it is necessary to sell and because they have an advantage to withdraw from it. We have been aware of this for a long time, but now those who doubted it should no longer.

About studios, publishers, licenses: Marketing hold the reins of the horse, and the time of games made by a team that is committed to doing well and making outstanding games is over. Perhaps salvation will come from independent studios...until they are bought out. Some publishers have a reputation among gamers for being like a fake philosopher's stone that turns everything it touches into crap, putting pressure on the studios, pushing them to make choices and decisions that damage the game. and at the studio.

Diablo 4 is just a product meant to make the most money and was not designed for your intertainment. The devs don't really know what to do to pass off this fake diablo as authentic and accumulate blunders. There is nothing more to expect from Blizzard in the future I think. Keep your money or give it to a studio that deserves it.

Negative: Compared to D3 where set items, TONS of legendaries with interesting affixes and legendary gems existed and acquiring/optimizing them was a real motivation for playing, D4 lost set items & legendary gems and there are only ~10 uniques per class and therefore place you in a position where you're constantly checking every rare to see if it's worthy of copying a saved affix to, usually to get a tiny improvement. Even more glaring is the lack of social interaction - you basically play by yourself 95% of the time, in D3 you could meet and do rifts together easily, in D4 I think social interaction was put on the backburner - a player lobby might be a good idea. My impression is that D3 had more monster variety than D4 - I feel like I'm always fighting enemies that have the same offensive skills. Expand

Graphics are awesome and story is ok but this pretty much it. Blizzard failed Diablo 4 with poor itemnisation (supposed to be the MAIN part of this game) with careless drops and over complicated item random stats. Started to get bored at level 60 and gave up around level 70.

For the people who say that "this is the best diablo ever" Are... Interestingly missing some extraordinary points to make about, well, anything.

While the cut scenes are the strongest that Diablo has ever had, with the best or most voice acting, this Diablo has the worst world building there has ever been.

There are very few types of enemies, and half of them are just recolorations/reskins of another type of enemy. At various points, without any explanation, in a new area, you're fighting enemies without any knowledge of whom they are. They lightest touch as to any explanation as to whom they might be often comes from some side quest that might come way later, or hard to find.

Even more obnoxiously, when you are attempting to do dungeons extraneous to the primary storyline, which is considered the "end game content", which is what Blizzard is all about... Blizzard tools all their games purely for end game content, not for much else. The enemies that were actually described, The Cathedral, and the Mother's Cult are mortal enemies and frequently fight you alongside each other.

While you are in the storyline fighting for the Cathedral you just randomly start killing Cathedral long before you get anywhere near any explanation for why the 2 color skins of their armies would be against you, saints and penitents.

Basically, everything to do with environmental immersion is non-existent in a way I've never seen so broken in a loot box type game.

Destiny, every prior Diablo, every mobile phone game with 0 thought put into them except casino addition exploitation and microtransactions that now Blizzard is desperately trying to participate in, every Borderlands has far better immersion and explanation of enemies, your place in the world.

So the gameplay feels nonsensical. You're just hammering pixels for no apparent reason other than to pinata things. At least every other comparable title (which is 20 dollars cheaper and looks better and does not rubberband constantly) gives you a solid reason why for each enemy, rather than just slamming out there just to slam out there. It's like Blizzard just got exceptionally lazy and assumed no one cared about their world building, they would be satisfied with the story and everything else in the world didn't actually matter to be cohesive in any function.

Then there is the microtransactions. The battlepasses. The microtransactions are the most expensive I've seen before, and there is absolutely no way to gain anything through effort in the shops unlike in... every other game out there. If you want things for free, get into WoW and farm 100 hours of your life for 15 to 30 bucks if people are still buying and selling WoW currency. Not worth the time or effort. And Blizzard is NOT worth your money. Especially with how they are trashing Larian Studios for delivering such an exceptional game with total exquisite immersion.

A Battlepass, Blizzard has the worst battlepass I have ever seen. They only give 666 currency accessible only through purchasing premium for 1,000 which their battlepasses cost 1000 or 2800. You can not get the currency, you only get an awful looking basic xmog and some urn ashes to marginally increase resource drops from trash farming. It's terrible. Everything in the shop is worth absurd amounts and is barely visible except mounts.

A ridiculous amount of people have huge grievances with the above. I give the game 2 stars because the main story is well done, the cinematics are well done, but the entirety of the world and the immersion of the game breaks halfway through. And the end game, post story is... unrewarding, extremely easy, and just undlessly grinding and repetitive.

To be in torment, hitting the same content, doing 20 nightmare dungeons, and maybe, just maybe, get 1 item to consider to switch out because nothing ever drops over 800. They changed how loot drops in relation to the cache apparently, which made it even harder to get good unique items, lowered power levels drops, and just basically I've been using the same items from level 60 to 91. Probably some 60 to 100 hours of play with averaging 1 decent drop every 5 hours that still trashes out. Just very unrewarding.

Diablo IV's UI clutter is the antithesis of immersion. The minimap cannot be hidden, the quest log cannot be hidden, on-screen key bindings cannot be hidden, and objective markers cannot be disabled. Additionally, small windows are consistently popping up due to quests & challenges being completed or nearby events occurring. This gives the game a feeling of a cross between a free MMORPG and an arcade game, which is terrible for immersion How Diablo IV, the latest entry in the series, is the least immersive game in the series, is baffling.

    2. Lazily Designed
Quest design is lazy, due to its reliance on objective markers. NPCs will give the player a task and not explain where the task should be completed, yet somehow the player character knows precisely where to go, due to objective markers. Diablo IV provides the same experience as any other mainstream game: Chase objective markers around the world until the credits roll.

    3. Socially-restricted
Diablo has always been a social/multiplayer-focused series, yet each new game drastically reduces the multiplayer experience. Unique items cannot be traded, legendary items cannot be traded, enchanted items cannot be traded, upgraded equipment cannot be traded, crafting materials cannot be traded, aspects cannot be traded, caches cannot be traded, red dust cannot be traded, obols cannot be traded, invokers cannot be traded, malignant hearts cannot be traded, etc. Trading has been so overly-restricted it may as well not be in the game at all. Playing the economy is one of my favorite aspects of Diablo games; unfortunately, Blizzard has ruined trading, one of the only reasons to interact with other players.

    3. Lazy Endgame:
Nightmare dungeons are supposed to provide variety for endgame, but the dungeon aspects are just reskinned copies of one another:
    a. Enemies explode upon death = Ground affect you avoid or die
    b. Orb chases the player then lands on the ground dealing AoE pulse damage = Ground effect you avoid or die
    c. Stone structure follows the player dealing AoE pulse damage = Ground effect you avoid or die
    d. Floating thing follows player, occasionally spawning a bubble you must be inside or you die after a few seconds = Ground effect you must be in or you die

This is obnoxiously lazy and repetitive.

    Recap:
To summarize, Diablo IV is a non-immersive, socially-restricted, lazily designed game. This is all a shame, as the graphics and audio are fantastic.

GRIFTS used to be super fun to push in Diablo 3, but whoever is the guy making these design changes at the top is an absolute know who probably is known as "a numbers guy" and knows next to nothing about making a game fun and rewarding. I have never in my entire life been so disappointed in a Diablo game, and I have played them all since the original Diablo. The only reason I gave this a 1 is because the artwork and world are beautiful. I feel bad for the artist who made such an awesome world to play in, that is entirely ruined by game design.

Shame on you Blizzard for this patch, you used to be an amazing game company, but sexual harassment, OW2, and Diablo 4 have shown me just how far you have fallen.

    2) they devs are pulling huge math levers that are nuking players builds. builds they have grinded hundreds of hours for the right gear, the right rolls, the right affixes. this is not what post launch v1.0 games do... this is what early access games do, to find the balance devs can make huge changes to see what the player base does, finds fun... but this is not an early access game. these devs are not refining with small tweaks to improve Sorc survivability here, bone spear OP there... they're using death star sized nerf hammers to essentially add more grind, for less reward, less XP, worse gear, worse mixed gear, that cannot beat the end game boss or even participate in high level content... where your character will just be randomly one shot by some trash mob because MATHS and their idea that this PVE game needs BALANCE.
I thought the cutscenes were cool in the campaign... too bad YOU CANNOT WATCH THE INTRO CUTSCENE IF YOU SEEN IT ONCE BEFORE due to a flag being set to hide cutscene in the backend. smh.

At start I really enjoyed that game. I played early access, open beta, early launch and all pre season as a sorceress.

I reached lvl 100 using a chain lightning + cracking build (non meta build/passive). I pushed to NM dungeon lvl 61, did all side quests, all renown for each region. BUT : I stopped playing. Why ? Lack of content, end game is frustrating I throw away 499 out of 500

Lack of meaningfull drop (Uber legendary are for hardcore gamer only).
Lack of boss (only 12 bosses for 100+ dungeon).
Lack of build diversity, you have to respec to meta build to push (11 millions gold per total respec)

And the BEST is season one patch : Nerf Nerf Nerf to the ground.

My main character I spend 250h in is now demolished, after reading patch I do not see how I can play a decent sorceress.

They nerfed XP per monster, they put limit to reach T3 T4 world tier (lvl 50/70). They overall buffed monster and nerfed player for one only purpose : hide the lack of content and slow down XP process to hide the fact that there is not enough content for a 3 months season.

I am considering to extend my pause and may be to skip season one.

    Listen to players Blizzard.

    - Who was the idiot who said "I know what players want! More on death explosions from mobs!" No one wants to break up the flow of awesome killing sprees only to have to spend 2-3 seconds watching a mob blow up, to pick up some garbage sacred item we didn't even need.

    - Why the hell does Sacred and sub 725 gear drop in wt4? Like.. what? WHY? The entire itemization process is awful. When I hit 100, I want to farm better gear than when I was level 70.

    - NM dungeons. Okay Blizzard, we get it that you want us to farm those. But the thing is, they kinda suck and are not fun. Resource Burn? Seriously? Stormbanes Wrath? Lightning Dome? In what world did you think this was fun? They aren't fun. They're the opposite of fun. In fact, despite that I've done hundreds of NM dungeons, honestly they are just not as good as Greater Rifts. D3 was better in this way.

    - What's with the pointless puzzles? I don't need the menial task of clicking 2 levers next to spikes that do 0 damage, over and over and over again. Just why?

    - Every dungeon feels flat. No depth, no stairs, no secret cow level or pony level awaiting us. Same stupid fight, every time only they have some obnoxious modifier that just isn't fun at all.

    - Everything about how the horse moves pisses me off. Gets stuck on everything, can't sprint in towns.

    - Inventory management is pure garbage and needs an entire rework. I'm not even going to harp on this because there are others here that have posted amazing suggestions. The entire aspect system is awful. I love the idea of an upgraded codex system that doesn't steal inventory space. I have 7 mules just to hold gear on 2 characters. Most of the aspects have like 1% difference in their stats, so pointless and frustrating.

Now that i have shared my summary of the review, I'll add a few more details to my opinion.

    PROs -
    1. Graphics are pretty and the open world concept is to be applauded. I really enjoyed being able to move across the world, as it is large.
    2. The campaign was one of the better in the series and I actually enjoyed playing through it. It was very easy, but enjoyable.

    CONS -
    1. This is a live service game, meaning it requires a constant internet connection, and you are at the mercy of Blizzard having the servers operational. They control the game and any changes, and you are just a player in their world.
    2. Combat is beyond boring, and loot is as well. Plenty of comments have been made about these two aspects so I'd recommend you read up on them as well for a more detailed analysis.
    3. After you beat the campaign, the real part of the game begins, and this is where it fails miserably. To summarize why it is fails. When you beat the campaign at level 50 or so, there is no reason to level further. Loot and power stays relatively the same from level 50 to 100. The game does introduce "paragon" points to help give the player some semblance of power increase, but the game also increases the power of the monsters you fight, making it a pretty similar power creep between the two. With the latest patch 1.1, the developers felt it was necessary to decrease this power creep for you, so it actually becomes harder and more of a slog to kill and enjoy the leveling process.

As the game stands now, it is in terrible shape. Avoid until Blizzard figures out how to make this game actually fun from level 50 to 100. The game is enjoyable for the campaign only, but not for the asking price of $69.99

So imagine this game as a sports car driving in deep mud. The wheels are spinning but you're getting nowhere fast. This is a chore to play and if I wanted chores, trust me, gaming would be the last thing on my mind. Of course, it's a live service game, so I expect they'll sell solutions to the problems they've made here... What a fall from grace. I knew that shutting down Blizzard North would just ruin Diablo but the state of the franchise now is beyond bad.

While the future of the game is anyone’s guess, at present Diablo IV is a solid, but strangely unambitious take that fails to bring much new to the table. By the end of my travels, I was more than willing to put it down and take a break — somewhere amongst all the grinding, Diablo IV had unfortunately ground me down as well.
