Sea of Thieves is a fun game. Rare did a great job making most little details feel fun and rewarding. The simple act of sailing your ship is super fun and rewarding. That being said, this is definitely the kind of game that is about the journey more than the destination, meaning that if you are only in it for grind, it's going to become boring pretty fast. There is little variation in what the voyages ask you to do, and if you aren't willing to make your own fun, it probably won't be.

There are some issues for sure; combat with guns falls flat, and AI enemies don't offer a satisfying challenge. There is a general feeling of no progress being made, quests never expand as much as I would hope, and the promise of "legendary voyages" doesn't shine through the hours upon hours of repetitive voyages needed to get to them.

On its face, Sea of Thieves sounds like a lot of fun. Travel the high seas with some friends, engage in naval combat, and plunder to your heart's content. There are moments when this vision acts itself out in fantastic ways, but that's all it is. Just moments.

Rare has created a relatively beautiful world that is devoid of life. The game hinges on player's imagination and creating their own path, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. There have been many games that rely on the player's ability to create their own story.

Yet, with Sea of Thieves, everything feels empty. The only NPCs are quest givers, who are one-dimensional, and poorly crafted skeleton enemies. The enemies lack any creativity or thought. They are merely a stand-in obstacle for players to pass through. The enemies themselves don't amount to a challenge, until Sea of Thieves' clunky, outdated, and overall poor land combat kicks in.

The land combat is not only dull and clunky, but downright bad. It feels more akin to a chore rather than a rewarding challenge as you try to secure your treasure.

For a game touted as an open sandbox, it seems Rare built the sandbox but forgot the sand. There are three factions with three "different" quest types, but each amounts to fetching a chest, skull, or animals and returning them to the quest giver. There are skeleton forts to clear, but when melee combat feels like players are using low-level characters from Morrowind, the excitement from facing down a horde of enemies is completely destroyed.

This leaves just fetch quests. The quests are nothing more than radiant questlines that have popped up in AAA RPGs: Go to x, find Y, return. Of course, as a game centering on pirating, there are treasure maps and riddles to solve, but the enjoyment is once again diluted thanks to the previously mentioned skeletons. Once again, fighting enemies should feeling challenging and rewarding, rather than an annoyance. It seems Rare threw the skeletons in because they knew not having mobs was creating too easy of an experience, so they hastily threw something together and here we are.

In a game where cosmetic customization was touted over a more traditional progression system, cosmetic customization is severely lacking. I was extremely excited when I learned SoT would enter around cosmetics, rather than unlocking higher grade hulls or weapons. It should have been a fresh breath of air. Instead, the customization is barebones and lacking. Currently, there are only three items on ships that players can customize. Players cannot create anything truly unique. In a sandbox game. A sandbox game that touted cosmetic customization as the driving force behind its rewards. Player customization is also severely lacking. Players are limited to just a few clothing and hair options.

Sea of Thieves is everything the gaming community has hated about recent release in one concise package. Lack of customization, bad AI, an empty world, bad combat, and fetch quests.

The promise of "more content to come" cannot be the excuse developers turn to when they push out games that are half-finished, but that is precisely what Rare has done. It is not a promise of "Free DLC," but rather a promise of content that should have been in the game from its awkward and mostly broken launch.

Let's get to the exciting parts, where Sea of Thieves really shows its value. NAVAL COMBAT.

For a game built around PvP, SoT gets it right in isolated instances. Ship-to-ship combat is some of the most fun players can have. There's not much more exciting than sinking or looting an enemy ship, while on the flip side the feeling of loss as you abandon your sinking ship and its content is heavy. This is where SoT shines. The naval combat is fun, especially when your crew is coordinating together as you blast holes in the sides of enemy ships or frantically try to scoop water out of your hold as you try to keep your ship together.

However, finding the instance of ship-to-ship combat is few and far between. Players are more likely to have their ship destroyed while they are turning in their fetch quests, or are on shore looking for treasure, than having their ship sunk as a result of ship-to-ship combat. There is no punishment for griefers who camp outposts (killing players near the quest givers as they try to turn in treasure, sinking empty docked ships) or spawn camp.

In a game that relies so heavily on the sense of accomplishment from PvP, the feeling is completely ruined by players who have decided to take the easy way out.

The game's "Pirate Code" does nothing to deter players who endless grief and troll, for no purpose other than to ruin the experience of other players. Rare is trusting players to self-police and it is already clear, players cannot be counted on to do so.

SoT could have been a fantastic and unique experience, but instead it feels desolate and empty, hampered by bad gameplay.

This is not a game, for everyone. Those claiming it is an 8-10 are clearly self-delusional, trying to shill, or are M$/Rare employees. My guess is that they are hoping that if enough people are fooled into purchasing, then Rare will eventually add enough content to turn this into a compelling multiplayer game. Gambling like that is what Kickstarter is for. Not a *supposedly* AAA game company backed by M$.

This game is little more than a scam in my eyes. A pretty, shallow present wrapping with an empty (sand)box inside. Don't get me wrong, the first few hours are fun, mainly if you play with friends. Just fooling around and everything is new. But after a little while, you realize, this is it, there isn't anything more in this game.

As game developer I can't help but notice the lack of effort that went into this game. This is what made me come to the conclusion of scam. If you were to make an asset-list from all items, objects and things in the game. and compare this to other similarly priced games. You would start to understand what I mean. This game has about 10% of the effort put into it compared to your average $60 experience ($85 if you buy this in Europe)

There are no cheap cosmetics, a getting hat will take you 5 hours of play (if you don't fool around) and changing your ship color or sail at least two full days of play. (and since barely anyone paints their ship, it's hard to tell them apart) This grind is there for two reasons: To keep you playing for longer, since there is not much else to play towards, and to sell future micro-transactions.

One thing that personally stuck out to me as a sore thumb is the music. I love the concept that they made. There is no soundtrack, but you get two instruments, to play your own music with friends. It's really fun to make your own pirate song. But this hole thing turns into a pain when you realize there is only 4 songs, and not even the most known shanties. (maybe a few more you can discover, but haven't found any of them) After a while this will get to your nerves as they become very repetitive after hours of play. It is just a detail, but it shows the enormous lack of effort that went into this game. With this concept they could easily have made 30+ shanties or more varying instruments like a flute, a drum or a guitar.

My recommendation: don't, DO NOT, buy this game at full price. But surely check it out with the xbox game-pass. It's worth experiencing, but not worth wasting money on. This game is another example of sickness that is spreading in the Industry.

The gameplay is absolutely fantastic in my opinion and the uniqueness of doing certain tasks shines through in all areas, which in turn makes the game an incredible amount of fun. Without a doubt the best way to enjoy this game is with friends. The co-op offerings are absolutely flawless and I’ve been able to play with my friends who are on PC with no problems at all and each time we’ve played its remained fun and unique throughout our time with the game. Sea of Thieves also allows you to play on your own and whilst it does provide you with some enjoyable moments when alone it’s not as good as when you play with friends, but it’s still worth playing it this way at times. Something that really impressed me about this game was the world in which the game takes place. It’s very big and no island feels the same and visiting each island was a pleasure to do because there’s always something different to find when you explore deeply, which is great. Don’t get me wrong the game could do with more content but I’m prepared to wait because the content that is included is more than enough to keep you satisfied for quite a while and there is enough variety to stop things from becoming boring especially when played with friends. A big part of this game is obviously travelling on your ship and thankfully everything has been done to perfection here. Sailing feels great and adjusting the sails and doing certain things actually matter so there is some realism here. The controls also hold up really well and I didn’t experience any problems at all with them, which is a bonus. The presentation side of the game creates a wonderful experience for me and I couldn’t have asked for any more here. Visually the game looks beautiful from start to finish and I was especially impressed with the weather effects in the game. The sound design is also brilliant and it captures the pirate atmosphere really well, which is great. At the end of the day as a game Sea of Thieves excells in my opinion and whilst some people may moan about the lack of content I don’t see that as a major problem because you make your own fun and content when you play. I think Rare have done a fantastic job with this game and it’s a game unlike no other, and without a doubt I’m going to stay with the game for a long time because I’m looking forward to see how the game grows and develops. The only caution with this one is it will require continued updates to keep it fresh and worth playing. My advice check it out on Xbox Game Pass before making the purchase if you are undecided if it's right for you. Expand

I see a lot of users complain that there is nothing to do after the first little bit but I like this fact. Rare went for simplicity and function, over content and RPG. It is a Zelda Game! Remember that I said that they just drop you into the world and the content that you see is the first level stuff. The game will reward those that explore. There is other content but advertise it openly. In fact, if you look at the loading screen there are hints there at other things you can do in the world. Also, keep in mind that Rare has stated that they will continue to add stuff all the time. And there are Raid folks.

OK, the bad. It is just a little to linear. I would of been nice to see some random things happen in the world outside of just the Kracen at launch.

How else do you explain that it takes two days of adventuring, maybe some 20-30 chests of gold to buy one ... freaking ... jacket - not a tier-3 uber OP jacket - the first jacket upgrade in the game?!

After two days of repetitive grind my increasingly desperate pirate calculated he would have to play for 60 solid days, collecting something approaching 2000 chests from INCREDIBLY repetitive missions to get the outfit he wanted and a few ship upgrades. What the heck, Rare, we have lives - and a huge array of other ways to entertain ourselves!

This is the most grindy game I have ever played, coupled with problems like (literally) one type of enemy, snakes with more health than sharks, physics engine bugs that have sunken ships leaving the water and flying overhead(!), a tiny game world, repetitive under-populated islands, just 3 basically identical quest types and horribly poor balance between small and large crews when it comes to the much-touted skeleton forts, this game officially stinks worse than a bilge-rat boot.

What a rush-job - a great graphics engine and a satisfying sailing mechanic do not a game make - virtually every mobile game has greater depth and variety. Do NOT waste your money - give it 18 months and check back in - or just go play Monkey Island, Sid Meier's Pirates or Ron Gilbert's underrated mobile game Scallywags to get your piratey-fix.

No wonder Guybrush was so willing to sell "fine leather jackets" - he must have been the richest pirate in the whole Caribbean...

However after playing 3 hours of Sea of Thieves I have seen and done everything there is to do, in its current state Sea of Thieves is a paid beta test early access title, its as shallow as a puddle.

I wont lie, graphically Sea of Thieves is amazing. It has some of the best sky boxes and water physics I have probably ever seen. Its co-op is great and really rewards the player for good teamwork but it all ends there. There is little to no progression system, most of us know this already but having no progression is a mistake. It basically just turns it into a massive grind fest, with the player trying to get to Legendary Pirate status which is basically impossible without having to grind out hundreds of hours for pretty much no reason.

The bottom line is, Sea of Thieves is unfinished but it has amazing potential and in years time it will probably be an excellent title. However in its current state it isnt worth your $60 investment. You're better off getting an XBOX gamepass and trying it out before you make the decision to buy, because to be honest right now, RARE doesn't deserve your money...

If you said yes to at least one of those, then good news! Rare has created a solid, well-designed, fun way to do those things, and polished it to a fine sheen. Every little thing about being on these ships has something to say about the love that went into it: the musical trill when your cannonball connects, the vibration when you turn the wheel past the midpoint, the glint of spyglasses on the horizon, the splash of waves on the deck.

This is not an RPG or an MMO. It's a game about sailing a ship, and running into (sometimes literally) other people on ships.

And it is very, very good at being that.

Oh, where you expecting to find something? ME TOO!

Sea of Emptiness is the prime example of a polished turd. It's just as much of a disappointment as No Mans Sky was on launch day.

    Cons:
-There is no character creation, just a randomized roulette wheel.
-There is no lore or story.
-NPCs are boring and say nothing that's of any interest.
-The games three factions offer only simple fetch quests with no reward except gold.
-The only progression is ranking up in one of three factions, doing so will reward you in fetch quests with more steps which might give you a little more gold than starting quests.
-Gold is mainly used to purchase cosmetics.
-Cosmetics offer nothing except a change in appearance. And because there is nothing but cosmetics a person that has played the game for 1 minute is no different than a person that's played it for 300 hours.
-The only enemy you have excluding other players are skeletons (snakes don't count as you can just walk around them) that offer as much challenge as Minecraft PvE. Walk backward and shoot,
-Enemies drop nothing and seem to only get in your way.
    - PvP is a thing but since there is no reward for killing other players there's no point. No k/d, no score, nothing.
-Islands are practically empty. No environmental hazards of any kind.
-When sailing the only hazards you have are a storm that you can easily avoid.
-A shark spawns to discourage you from being in the water too long. It's a game that's 90% water, why?
-There are no penalties for anything. You can die all you want, lose your ship, kill other players and nothing bad will happen.
-Crews are limited to 4 people. This can be an issue when using the galleon which requires a minimum of 6.

    Pros:
    -It looks nice.

To ask a person to pay $60 (a price which no game should ever be worth and we should never have been okay with) for basically nothing is insulting to say the very least. It's degrading, derogatory, disrespectful, offensive, repulsive, and rude.

I already know how this is going to work because I've seen these scum sucking tactics before. They release this empty game and then over the years add the rest of it piece by piece, only they've wrapped it up as extra content, and then charge people $20 or $30.

A lot of fun for a couple of hours, but that's it. It's just getting repetative and boring, no progression at all. If you don't really care about cosmetics there is nothing to spend the money on. I was hoping to upgrade the ship. It feels like No man sky, but on the sea.

Pretty game, but has almost nothing to do.
Good for about 3-5 hours of playtime, then you quickly realize how shallow this game is.
DO NOT BUY for the full $60 price-tag, only pick it up if you have the Xbox game pass and can play it for free.

Upon our spawning to a new ship in a new location...what the should on or horizon... the same crew in the same boat... same result. Repeat the same cylcle of set sail, death, spawn repeat and you have three hours of boring and frustrating game play. No missions complete, no loot, our enemies weren’t even getting anything for it I presume as we hadn’t anything to steal. Nevertheless they kept pursuing and killing us for three hours. Why would you design a game where that is possible Rare? Oh and there’s no character progression beyond the appearance of your character and ship... so glad It came with game pass and I didn’t Have to pay full price.

Sadly, after only a few hours of gameplay, I have come to the conclusion that it's very boring in a short amount of time, which is not good at all considering how long I waited for this release.

If the constant enemy camping at outposts isn't bad enough, the $60 purchase for a game teeming with near nothing to do but wander around aimlessly for hours is BS, and I'm taking this game back for a refund, or a trade in of some kind. It's just not what I was hoping for, so now I must wait again for another Exclusive to hit my XBox One S that might be worth of the purchase, but we all know this game just is not the winner it was touted as being. It seems that many others feel the same way, and I thought the following comments sum this game up the very best!

"Sea of Thieves has no story, no competitive multiplayer, no true character progression, and only very little in the way of compelling gameplay."

"If this game were a movie, it would be a straight to DVD type of movie".

"This game, I feel will be mostly positive just from people really wanting to have a good Microsoft exclusive, but long story short, this game is as large as an ocean but as deep as a puddle. Not much has changed from the alpha, and it seems like the appropriate price should be 30 dollars, not 60".

That really sums up how I felt about this game, and that is why I'm giving this game a rating of 4 out of 10. This game is the HAZE of this Generation. Hoped to be a great exclusive, okay with some friends for a few hours I suppose, then becomes so boring that you just want to place it back on the shelf and wait for more content to come for the game, (for free), one day to help make this the game it should have been in the first place, (much like No Man's Sky has been).

I also feel the fact that Rare decided to make this game multiplayer-heavy was a stupid decision. Not everyone has time to sit down with their buddies or would prefer to play by themselves. Why not give the option to hire some AI crews for your ship? The game's only saving grace is its art-like graphics. The sea can look amazing from time to time.

The bad: There is nearly no content outside of PvP. I don't just mean quests, I mean content. The Battle Field games are PvP only... but they have CONTENT, guns, vehicles, upgrades, equipment, different things to get and or do. In one class alone you have Easily over 30 options between guns and equipment.

    Sea of Thieves has.
4 Weapons, unlocked from the start of the game.
2 Ships, that can not be changed in any game play relevant way.
That's it for character choices... everyone has the same basic kit of stuff at all times otherwise...

There are exactly 3 types of quests, with minor variations, but they are all essentially fetch quests, really basic fetch quests.

Personally I don't mind the quests too much, they are there to move players around so that you can run into each other for pvp. The Ship to Ship pvp in the game is its high point... I can get into very technical critiques of their game balance but the main problems are the lack of variety.

I found the cooperative game play of operating the ship to be very fun and rewarding when narrowly missing a rock or surviving an engagement with another ship but this faded as the game became more routine. A large part of Sea of Thieves relies on other people playing the game and having encounters with them. This game had unlimited potential and they fulfilled none of it. On top of all of that the game also has troubling bugs and other problems. Latency problems, visual bugs and frame skips are all prevalent. So while there is PVP it gets very frustrating when there is massive lag spikes and frame skips. On top of that, it has an amateur multiplayer interface at best. You have no control over your party. Usually you just have to quit out of your game entirely if you want a friend to join you. And the cross-platform party system through the xbox app on PC has never actually worked without any problems whenever me and my friends have tried. It generally has taken us 20-30 minutes before we can even get into a game together due to the party problems. Also playing solo or even just duos is the hard mode of the game. The minor fun that is to be had from this game seemed to drain away while trying to use match making or sailing in a sloop. This is not a $60 game. It feels like a $20-$30 early access game. I know you can get it through xbox game pass but many people purchased it outright. And if you were wondering you can get a refund from microsoft. Just contact them. You don't have to have a valid reason. They will refund you. So, while this game may come to fruition in a year or so, as it stands now it is an extremely poor game. Expand

This is a game that features the studio's signature charm and humor and holds to its core design philosophy of making unique and interesting games that buck the industry trends. This is perhaps the best title we have seen from Rare in over a decade, a studio that never quite felt in control after they became a part off Microsoft. The mechanics of the game are simple in nature but are effective and rely on a player's own ability to make reasonable conclusions based on how things work and behave.

Steering the ship can feel cumbersome and difficult but that is because it takes practice and finesse. Navigating the map can be challenging but once you get used to identifying the unique characteristics of the island it becomes second nature, with no need for any automated assists that games so often feel obligated to provide. In terms of the rules that govern the game, it feels like an open canvas that you can interpret as you like. Getting used to the basics doesnt take long but mastering the finer aspects of playing the game is something that may be difficult to pick up on.

Bear in mind, this is a game all about social interaction. You can play it solo but the open seas are a lonely place. Not only is it very challenging to strike it on your own, but it also misses the point of this game. This game is meant to be played with other sea worthy mateys, not only to work is best but also gives the best opportunities for strong emergent gameplay. This game is most about the stories that you can tell and remember, stories involving exploring shipwrecks, dueling with other players, fending off the kraken, and many other things thar can happen.

I have spent many hours at sea and have only explored a handful of the locations. The way missions work are largely randomly generated quests so it can feel repetitive when there is a lack of variety in the objectives. Bear in mind though that the quests do get stronger with multitiered goals as you increase your ranks. The people saying there is nothing to do or see after just a few hours seem to take assumption that the game is solely based on the early types of quests given. They don't seem to understand that player interaction adds to the depth and scope of everything they experience in this game. They don't see the ocean for its islands, if you will. This isnt a game about grinding to an endgame, it is an evolving experience that with time and updates will flourish. Rare is back!

The core mechanics of the game show promise and it makes for a good base for a potential future game that could be great - but Sea of Thieves has glaring issues with even the best parts of the game. The world largely feels barren and empty, most islands might have some of the 3 animal types or skeletons but moving through them definitely feels more like a sandbox or theme park than an actual inhabited world. That would be forgivable if there were actually any reason to explore the islands aside repeating one of the three basic mission types that never really play out any differently unless you run across other players.

And when you do run into other players - the game seems was more exciting and interesting - until you realize the futility of the whole meta. The combat is basic and doesn't get any more interesting once you spend a few hours with it. Hitting seems delayed at times and is not very satisfying - either in PvP or PvE. Ship combat - what is supposed to be the strong point of the game - starts to fall flat when you realize two good crews facing off against each other usually just ends in a stalemate when both sides run out of resources. It's hilariously easy to keep your ship from sinking and being it that there are no forms of leveling or non-cosmetic progression - there's also no real difference to how fights will play out. The four weapons in the game are available to everyone to be swapped at any time while on a ship and the three firearms function essentially the same. And sure you may be able to launch yourself onto another ship and get lucky enough to keep them from repairing the damage just long enough until they sink.

But when you realize they will just keep spawning a nearby island and the process will just repeat itself over and over again - it almost becomes worth it to avoid fights altogether (which is totally possible given there are no ways to close the gap between a trailing ship and their target as long as they don't hit something). The spawn system in the game is also easily exploitable in other ways and you can set up shop on an enemy ship murdering them just as they spawn over and over until they decide to scuttle the ship or move to a different server.

The whole game really seems to be a missed opportunity to make something a lot more interesting. The non-ship combat is bland, the voyages are repetitive, and the ship combat becomes more of a hassle than it is fun the more people pick up the meta. The level of cosmetics in the game at launch is also laughable for a game that is supposed to be largely about cosmetic customization. I really hope somewhere down the line the game becomes something great but as it stands right now Sea of Thieves is just a mediocre game with cool looking water that can hold your attention for a days of heavy play - a week or two if you play it lightly. Rent or wait on this one for sure - it has the depth of a mud puddle three days after raining.

I literally made a metacritic account just to warn you all that this game is an insult to us all. I feel duped for spending $60 on a game that's no where near complete. As a community we can't just keep buying incomplete games and cross our fingers for future DLC to get the game we wanted/expected. Play on the Xbox pass at the very most.

Blue Whales, dolphins swimming by the ship, turtles there is so much that i have to use the word 'lazy' on the devs part. The missions get dry after about 2 or 3 of each and you get to the point when you can't even be bothered to go after a ship cos it takes too long and good chance they have nothing on their ship. Nothing that inspiring to spend your coins on. Just confuses me when developers spend so much time and money thinking of a great concept and making a game look amazing and to think that's enough.I honestly question if they even like pirates. Something other than a skeleton to fight might be a good idea. (fml) Massive potential but falls short on so many levels. Expand

That should have been my first warning, I installed the game and jumped straight having not played the beta. I was amazed that there is no tutorial whatsoever. After a couple of hours I had mastered the controls which are just so awkward its unreal and decided to start my first mission, it took about 30 minutes to complete it ( capturing 2 white chickens) that I was amazed my next mission was again to capture this time 1 red chicken. In reality there are only 3 types of mission

    1. Kill a skeleton and take the skull to the outpost
    2. Find a buried chest and take the chest to the outpost
    3. Capture a chicken/s and take them back to outpost

    Seeing a trend here!

First of all , let me start with the price .. regional pricing here was 100$. Thats quite allot for a game that currently suffers from allot of thinks. All from technical issues to microtransactrions cooming soon ™ (for an already expansive game)

Then there is the Gaming Community that is currently taking the game as hostile.
There is a larger group of players that has found out that 4v1 or 4v2 players are a real easy target. Especially if you are a console players. You will end up getting spawned killed over and over and over and over on your ship. You will get hunted by the same group of people even thought they killed you and know you dont have any valuable gold on your ship. Just because its easy for them. and think of it . PC vs xbox in a first person shooter who wins that fight ?

Taking it up on the forums is pointless because the same group of people are active on the forums and made any discussion about this just toxic , this ranges to threats to personal attacks while moderators dont handle this to make sure you have a constructive discussion. But using swear words like Sh*t is not ok that will get you a warning or even a ban.

Then there is the ingame content. From the alpha to beta to final game there has not really been added allot of content .. actually it seems from beta to final game they even downscale the game ? merchant missions are simple fetch and catch missions. other missions are ok though.

The game is also riddled with allot of bugs that where not in the alpha or beta, Joining is a pain because on peak times its basically pointless playing since you wont ether get in or you wont get or keep your progress. Full character deletions or most items gone for ever have also been part of ongoing issues. Rare seems not to care to much ether here and tells people just to wait its a bug that re logging fixes and ignores people reporting that its not and that the bugged state is actually saved to your account now. all in all

This is way to expensive ,
Gets soon microtransactions to even milk people more.
Ingame PVP mechanics are bad and abused allot.
Community overrun by toxic players making this for sure not even a 12 year + game when real bad proofanity . threats and other harassment is screamed both in game and you get harassed on the forums while moderators refuse to take actions.

And now Cheaters are also on top of that reported with rare responding .. Just report there name and proof.. Issue is you cant see other peoples player names. Its like they dont even care.

With all thats going on , issues , bugs, double moral , rare not caring .. the high price (btw that might differ from country to country but in Australia its 100 $ right now and other people report same high local prices ) i can not in anyway recommend this game

After that decision was made i started to do the incredibly varied 2 types of missions (fetch a chest and fetch an animal). I spent days trying to optimize my fetching and i am now pretty good at it, yet not perfect. Once i become a true fetch quest master pirate i will rule the seven seas.

At first the game will confuse you with a lot of items to choose from (banana, plank and cannonball) but once you figured out that you can't eat a cannonball or a plank it becomes pretty obvious that the banana is for health. I am still not sure what to use the plank or cannonball for but that is just part of the fun and exploration of all of the content.

The most fun however is the combat. I can't get enough of the skeletons. They are everywhere in this game and they will keep you on edge while you desperately try to figure out the complex combat system. Do you press the melee button or the shooting button? Critical decisions need to be made to survive in this unforgiving pirate life.

I would give the game a 10 but it needs to focus more and stop overwhelming people with content. The designers could learn a lot from games like Minesweeper or Tetris.

Would prefer to pay someone (and I am being very serious about this) £20 to **** in a bag and give me it rather than spend £50 on this and have it forever. 0/10

If the developers wanted community involvement in the dev process then that's the place to do it, after all...

however there is plenty to love and appreciate here. The game is beautiful, the world feels authentic because of the water and the weather and just generally all the systems working together to make the world feel like a real place. When you see an enemy ship on the horizon it FEELS authentic. as though you were out at sea and you happened to chance upon other pirates.

A lot of the fun comes from keeping your head on a swivel and engagin other crews while you're out running missions or completing forts. In a way it feels like The Dark Zone from The Division. In that sense it offers a ton of great emergent gameplay and I personally recommend it.

however i think most people would be safe waiting 6 months on this one. Price will inevitable come down and content will be added. There will come a point when the price/content balance will be struck. It really feels like there should be some sort of narrative driver in the game, as well as more in the way of life(NPC ships and populated towns would be nice, as well as innumerable other features.)

Depending on how long the gameplay loop remains fun, the game may warrant a 7 rather than an 8. I'm not there yet so it feels like an 8 right now.

The idea and concept is amazing, drift on the wide seven seas as you fight other pirates and collect the booty.
But this game is not that. This game is not at all what was promised. The game looks beautiful and you really come to admire the cartoonish yet amazing artstyle. Furthermore the music in the game is amazing and you'll be dancing to the tunes as you set out on your pirate adventures. But the flaws are there.
Their is not progression you only have reputation and becoming a "pirate legend" to look forward to. I feel as the game should have been more mmo-esque. What I would have liked to see is a skill tree, not that would make things unfair but i their has to be some kind of objective. Voyage's get old fast and in the beggining they are a real joy, but quickly feel like a choir with voyage's repeating themselves constantly and to my experience, there are almost no other pirates at sea and it just feels like a PvE game only and not a hybrid ( PvP and PvE ).
The game's asking price is unacceptable regarding the fact that you get so little descent content at launch, the game feels like it's in beta and I do not, at all reccomened buying it for 60 dollars, wait for the price to go down to maybe 15-25 dollars or just get it free for 14 days through xbox game pass!

Unfortunately a few hours in we started to notice the same thing everyone else has. This game is shallow. After playing it for a little while it feels like someone built the engine, and put those side quests in that people tend to complain about in other games, but forgot to put the main game in. The primary game is fetch quests with a few random events tossed in.

Sea of Thieves has the framework of a game that could be brilliant. I halfway believe maybe it will become that game in a year or so. If so I'd be more than happy to pay for it. But for now, i could not recommend anyone to buy this essentially early access game at full price.

Side note: that water is beautiful. Rare should license out whatever tech they used to make that happen.

We have nothing but respect for Rare's vision with Sea of Thieves, but it is a game as likely to chew you up and spit you out, as it is to embrace you. If the wind is in your favour then it can be a delight, but a storm is never far off if you lose momentum. The real test of the quality and efficacy of Rare's plan will be in how it manages to evolve and grow in the weeks and months to come. [Issue#199, p.67]
