This game IS fun to play, but like most users already said, content wise it's just so god damn barebones.

I didn't have my head up my butt going into the game and instead thought it was an incredibly fun open world pirate experience where the naval battles actually made my heart race, a reaction I haven't had to gaming in well over a decade.

While more content would be nice (the ocean itself needs more danger, IMO), I'm still happy with the game and look forward to more insane naval battles.

Until that point everything had impressed me, so it's safe to say that the skeleton, the core of the whole game is there and it's quality is superlative, but there's not enough content to hold this base. Now there are two separate routes that Rare can follow,

    · or Rare works upon it's magnificent base and introduces the content to make it a great proposal;

    · or Rare decides that this is the final product and they let them as it is.

In this state it is like a beautiful crystal bottle with just poor and cheap wine in the inside. Wanting to be optimistic, it's much easier to add content than to work across all the core of the game. Let's hope for the best, that as it is we have nothing special here.

Sea of Thieves has so much potential. Rare was a fine studio that produced many of my favorite games as I was growing up. After the release of SoT, my faith in Rare has been shaken though.

Remember when you bought a game and you didn't have to download a patch or update because they shipped the ENTIRE game upon release? It's been quite a few years so I can understand if most of you can't remember. Games are evolving and unfortunately Rare isn't evolving with them. I'm actually impressed that Rare was able to sink so many hours into development, push the release date back multiple times, and still manage to promote SoT as a finished product. I mean, come on guys. Day one and the achievements aren't even popping? This is basic stuff. At this rate we'll have the complete game by 2020!

Just be patient everyone, maybe they'll include pirate stuff soon! You know, PIRATE STUFF! Like more than 2 ship types! Or can you imagine more than 3 weapons? Because they can't!

I get that it's an open-world game and it promotes teamwork, which I love, but it's pretty irresponsible to tell me I'm getting an Xbox game when I'm really getting a half-eaten ham sandwich. Except the ham sandwich would have more features and less updates.

Do not believe these "reviews" or listen to their scores. My score would probably be a 7.5-8 but I gave it a ten to combat the review bombs. The game, as I'm sure you're aware is beautiful and you will never find a game quite like this. If you want a great pirate experience this is the game you play. The sailing is top notch with many things you must micromanage and yet you are in complete control. The quest system, although admittedly a bit repetitive, is fun and crazy with a crew and relaxing but sometimes tense as a solo player. The progression in this game is all for the sake of becoming a pirate legend (which is a bit of a grind) but he developers say that there will be some really neat things coming for legends in the summer. This game is most fun with friends but can be fun solo as well. You will have experiences in this game that no single player game and no other game in general can replicate; it's quite unique. For example; I joined a game with a random crew on a galleon and we proceeded to defeat the skeleton stronghold for a ton of loot. While we were doing this (and quite low on supplies mind you) a hostile galleon attacked twice and a player nearly stole our ship. Despite our disadvantage we sunk both galleons and killed both of their crews in order to take the stronghold loot that we rightly deserved. Another, somewhat silly, experience I've had is with playing with a friend; we had a quest to retrieve a gunpowder keg but when we arrived at the outpost to cash it in, he thought it would be a good idea to shoot it (hint: when shot, it goes boom). So here I am weaving back and forth, evading sharks and gunfire desperately trying to sell this gunpowder keg and we must have looked ridiculous. There are also many good moments to be had completing the quests as you can hunt for buried treasure like a true pirate and cash in the chest to the gold hoarders, defeat skeleton bosses to retrieve and sell their skulls to the order of the souls, and hunt down animals and capture them to sell them to the merchant alliance. The customization is limited but quality (my pirate looks amazing I might add and I'm saving up for ship customization). It looks a tad expensive but as you play you will understand that it feels right that way. Overall, do not believe the haters or review bombers, this isn't a perfect game as it lacks some content but it is still a great game and there's nothing like it. If you want to experience a true pirate game, you enjoy ships and want to sail the seas, or just want to have some fun with friends or even solo you must check this out...It's truly a blast! Expand

Sea of thieves is a sandbox adventure game that specializes on sailing and team play. Game ssuch as this suffer in the current gaming market because of a lack of “features” or “upgrades” or “ranked play” all of which most triple A titles strive for to survive in a gaming economy where players want the same game but better. Sea of thieves could have easily been a BlackFlag clone with crafting and a battle royal mode, however Sea of Thieves lacks this. This is because Rare wanted to create a pirate game, and they did a really good job! I’ve never thought piloting a boat would be as fun as sea of thieves made it to be. This complemented with a grand open world and interesting places to visit really sell the game to fans of such games. I understand the repetition exists and progression is lackluster, however this shouldn’t prevent those who enjoy this type of game from having a blast. To conclude, I believe people who give subpar reviews are incorrect. This game isn’t bad, it just lacks the common machganics incorporated into modern games that retains massive quantities of people, but, for those who enjoy this classic style of make your own adventure game, it’s a masterpiece.
P.s as for a grade, Sea of Thieves is by no means fundamentally broken so it is above a zero, but at the same time there are some possible balance issues with combat and a somewhat lack of replay value since gameplay can sometimes be linear due to simple quests. That’s why I believe a 8/10 is deserved for the hard work from Rare. Hope this helps them get back to making more!

This is supposed to be one of those games where you "make your own fun" by simply going out there and explore, but the game has to PROVIDE the content to make players have unique experiences, and that's where Sea of Thieves falls way short, at least right now.

Sea of Thieves is an awesome sandbox that is just shy of greatness.

The engine, the mechanics, the gameplay are all brilliant in Sea of Thieves – sailing is so satisfying that you’re constantly looking to the horizon for an excuse to change direction or go explore something so that you can get your ship there... which leads to the biggest issue right now, there is a lack of content.

I have put in what must be over 30 hours so far, this has been a mixture of 4 man galleon, 2 man sloop and 1 man sloop gameplay (the majority of which has been the latter)… I am currently sat at around level 21, 17 and 14 in the following factions:

Gold Hoarders – they task you with some treasure maps or riddles to find and dig up some buried treasure.
Order of Souls – they throw out some bounties for NPC skeleton pirate crews that need hunting down.
Trade Merchants – They need supplies in certain areas, often live critters like snakes, pigs or chickens and they have a deadline!

These are all fun but arguably could be boiled down to simple “go here, find a thing and take it back” but the thrill of sailing, and the simple mechanics really do make it a fun adventure.

This is very much a story game – not a written narrative, but very much the stories you end up with after an hour long voyage… It’s a game where you can be at the edge of your seat with a galleon pursuing you for your treasure, or be incredibly tense as a little sloop sails by playing their hurdy gurdy as a sign of peace…

My friends and I keep telling fun little stories of events that happened in the game.
If you want a game to both relax and have fun to then this could be it, but it can get hairy at times that’s for sure. If you want a game with a strong focus on teamwork and co-op, then this could be the game for you. If you want a reason to play the game including levelling up, unlockables and collectibles then this is not the game for you – this is a game about an even playing field and having fun. I hope to see more content as I do fear for the ultimate longevity of the game, but so far it’s a really fun adventure waiting to be had.

Graphically beautiful, but gameplay is pathetic. Very repetitive missions and virtually no story. A hefty price tag for what you get. It will go free to play before long if it wants to be have a chance. Even PvP is lacking (and they respawn you at your ship in the same location so you can be camped) which is sad for a pirate game.

The games physics are incredible when it comes to ships and water. Throughout the testing phases that went on throughout development, content was always a big concern and the full release hasn't done anything to address that concern. The game basically consists of point to point missions which gets boring quick. you basically have 3 mission types. Where's the adventure? the Stories? If you are playing solo or as a two man team you will be getting wrecked by galleons a lot. You'll also encounter griefers patrolling outposts just destroying stuff for lols. i don't see the game having a long term future in all honesty. You really need 4 players to fully enjoy the game and it wont be long before your crew deserts to other games. Far Cry 5 gives SoT its first big test in a few days. The game world has been beautifully crafted but it just feels so empty. where's the AI ships so you can pirate them? where's the variety is hips? surely fishing should have been in the game? wheres the variety of NPCs and animals? the game just lacks any depth i'm afraid which is a great shame. The whole progression system is pointless and just one big grind. In conclusion there is a sea of potential here but the game has the depth of a puddle and feels bare bones. Expand

Sea of Thieves quickly gets very repetitive as it pretty much is get a quest from one of the 3 vendors that the game offers which is the gold hoarder which is get chests, Order of Souls get skulls from past pirate captains & the merchant which is get pigs, gunpowder barrels etc and deliver it back to a certain outpost within a time limit. Once you have got your quest you get on the ship, travel to the island that the game tells you to go to, get the treasure or skull or barrel etc, take it back to the rep vendor and cash it in for gold which can be used to buy cosmetics and a bit of experience which can be used to level up your vendors which will allow you to upgrade them which will give you quests that are slightly harder than the ones that you have previously done, for example longer quests meaning that you have a better chance of getting more chests & skulls to get you more money. Once you have sold your loot that you have got on your adventure you just repeat by buying new quests from the vendors and voting for them on what one you want to do next in your ship.

Even though the game has it's technical issues I feel that Rare is doing a good job communicating with the Sea of Thieves community by releasing developer update videos explaining what the studio plans to do about tacking these issues and keeps us up-to-date via the status page on there forums and twitter.

The PvP is non existent and completely pointless. There are so few systems that there's no progression. There's 4 weapons and they are all dull and uninteresting.

There's no tutorial help, I had to google for an hour to figure out that you have to press 'E' to bring up a hidden menu with your quest objectives. The PC version is just a terrible console port. Sure, it works fine but the menus are terrible for mouse/keyboard.

Don't know what else to say, it's 70% of a perfect game, it's just not finished.

Ever since other Pirate games like Assassin's Creed Black Flag have come out, I've always wanted an open world multiplayer pirate game. The game is by no means perfect, as the game is a repetitive grind fest and the game could use some more content. Although if you can look past that, as I have, you'll see a fun, laid-back game that you and your friends can play for hours. The proximity voice chat is also implemented well and I've had hours of fun talking with randoms.

If you're looking to (buy/interested in) this game, but not quite sure, here's a list of things to consider:

    1. This game is on the Windows 10 PC store and is fully crossplay (Even allowing parties on the Xbox app) but you WILL need an Xbox live gold membership so keep that in mind. (I was skeptical being a PC/Nintendo gamer myself) The crossplay is flawless though, and graphics on PC look spectacular and controls nicely. I would definitely recommend the PC version despite only being available on the infamous Windows 10 store.
    2. This game is grindy, meaning you'll spend a lot of time doing what feels like the same quest over and over. This makes the single player feel empty unless you're actively teaming up with other ships. If you like playing alone or you don't have a lot of friends with this game, this might be a deal breaker.
    3. At the time of writing this review, all upgrades are cosmetic. Plans for ship upgrades have been hinted at, however. (This full price game has no game-altering micro-transactions and has no plans for them, no need to worry)
    4. Besides other players, the NPC enemies are a bit lacking, they're only skeletons and their different variations (Shadow, leaf, gold, etc) and sharks in the ocean. If you're not a fan of PVP this might be a deal breaker.
    5. For those of you who are in for the PVP, some players take it upon themselves to hunt you down no matter what. This isn't the problem with the game itself but it's worth mentioning. It might get a tad frustrating to assert your dominance over a group of troublesome pirates that reap no rewards.

And finally, the purchase price. This game is a full price $60 game, but its current content makes it feel like less. If the price is throwing you off, this game is available on Microsoft's new service, "Game pass."
This game is 100% free with this $10 monthly service, there's even a 14 free trial for those wanting to demo the game before purchase. This makes the lacking content feel more justified and I strongly recommend anyone interested to use Game pass instead of a full purchase.

This game is gorgeous, controls well, has an alright community, has flawless crossplay, and is a blast with friends. If all of this sounds fun I'd definitely recommend, despite its various flaws.

Very atmospheric, very fun, amazing water effects, can be fun with the right people.

    Problems:
Sluggish combat system, trying to switch weapons too fast will make it so that you don't actually switch weapons, and therefor not switch unless you spam the button so that way you switch when you actually can.

Not much to do honestly, the quests are enjoyable, but there needs to be a wider range.

The spawning system is atrocious. The skull island raid is great, but the pvp there is nonsense considering if you win and sink a ship, they are back there in 2 seconds because they spawn at the closest outpost. This game was made by millennials for millennials, so even if you lose, you get to retry retry retry retry retry retry retry retry retry until one crew gets sick of it and leaves. Honestly, if you lose the least that should happen, is you spawn on the other side of the map, what I would like more, is for you to switch servers so that you cannot come back. This would force the community to get better at ship combat by making them actually repair their ships, or do drive by's... not hey lets anchor and everyone on cannons and blasting and hope they sink before we do, then repair when they are gone.

So the lack of content pushes everyone to do the ONLY skull island out, and you get a never-ending battle where skull island takes 1-4 hours to do. Also, where is the damn variety in monsters, its just skeletons over and over and over.... god put some ai pirates and stuff like that driving around with rewards for killing them... something... anything... PLEASE!

So there being only 1 skull island, and galleys on the server that can just keep coming back, a solo/duo on a sloot that want to challenge themselves to do it, can't... period... infinite spawn of galleys won't allow you to.

Changes that should be made: Faster combat system, more weapon variants, maybe a 2 hander that has longer range and deals more damage but is slower, a sword AND shield where you can block bullets. A better scoped sniper rifle, maybe even a different type of rifle and submachine gun. Add 1 more weapon slot so that we have a little more ammo, and more capability in combat. Add ammo slot upgrades that gives you 1-5 more bullets. When a ship is sunk, that crew needs to spawn on the furthest outpost away that has no one at it, not the freaking closest one. And honestly, Galleys should be on their own server, and sloots on theirs. I've seen too many galleys only go after sloots, and completely ignore other galleys because the crew is pathetic. Also, how's about when you finally get the kraken and defeat it... how about some kind of freaking reward... how do you guys reward people for losing with 800 chances... yet a crew that wins vs a kraken you give nothing too. Who is making decisions for this game? They need to be fired, and allow someone else to take the helm.

Also, how is this a $60 title? Can anyone come up with a legitimate answer other than these guys just wanted to make a quick pirates plunder and then hope everyone doesn't care? This game is probably worth $20, but definitely not worth more than $30.

I've talked to many of my friends about how much I was anticipating this game, then after playing it for a few days they asked about it, and I told them straight up, not worth it, because it isn't. When a ton more content is added for us to go do, and they figure out and add the things that i've put in here, I'll change my opinion, and tell people to get the game, but as of right now this looks like a cash crab with 0 passion, because they would have realized that there wasn't much to do in the game.

I had a lot of faith in rare, but I will never.... EVER buy another title from them, and everyone else should do the same. We need to stop these companies from making quick bucks and moving on and exploiting gamers that just want to play a game that they want to love, but then get rick rolled with 30 minutes of content.

I made an account just now, because you might like to know...IGN actually gave this barebones $60 game a higher score than Alien Isolation (They gave Alien less than a 6). You know... A game that actually has CONTENT, a STORY, as well as this so called "Good Foundation". OH AND THERES NO MICROSTRANSACTIONS IN ALIEN ISOLATION BUT THERE IS GONNA BE FOR SoT!

A game that actually has CONTENT, a STORY, as well as this so called "Good Foundation". OH AND THERES NO MICROSTRANSACTIONS IN ALIEN ISOLATION BUT THERE IS GONNA BE FOR SoT!

**** off, seriously just **** off IGN. Rare had many years, and the support of a several BILLION dollar company... to at least animate a body for the Kraken, or actually put more missions. Maybe even adding more than literally, LITERALLY, 2 enemy NPCs on ALL the islands. Skeletons, and snakes. Would it kill them to add even just a spider? Microsoft exclusive budget couldn't handle it? And they call this a pirate game, wheres the british army trying to stop us from getting rich? Getting loot is WAAAY too ez, and it makes me feel more like I'm doing chores tha being an actual pirate. It was harder to steal a chocolate bar as a little kid, than it was to get loot from the skull island, which literally just has the same skeletons over and over and over again.

There's only 2 melee animations in the ENTIRE sword fighting "pirate" game. I wish I was exaggerating. I am not. Forget about having a decent ship to ship battle because of the wonky controls and the extremely, and I really mean EXTREMELY limited arsenal. If you've done it once, you've done all there is to do with that. I don't even know what the point of looting is, because literally everything you can buy in the game is cosmetic only. Once you got all the gun types (which you could probably get in under 20 minutes) it doesn't help you do any better at anything. So why even bother? Don't let me start with the overpriced sail paintjobs. They don't make your boat any faster. There is nothing to do, and there is no reason to do anything once you played the first time. There is only TWO kinds of ships in a PIRATE game! WHY? At least put a ****ing row boat in the game we're not all that picky! You can't even fish or sell sharks and whales for money like in AC4. You can't even rob merchant ships because they do not exist in this game. How did Ubisoft make a better pirate game with actual looting, when the pirating was just a small part of the story? They really **** the bed with this game I'm sorry to say.

But yeah sure, give Rare a pass because apparently all we need to sell a full priced game and get a decent review, is a "GOOD FOUNDATION!"

And people wonder why more and more games keep coming out like this. Hyped up, unfinished, full priced, but it's ok because at least it had a concept...and now they have your money too...(like it's really that hard to imagine a pirate game ffs) Seriously being a gamer sucks sometimes these days.

Oh and no! I'm not happy at all that this game did bad. I wanted it the second I heard about it, because I loved the Pirates Of The Caribbean movies and Assassin's Creed Black Flag.I preordered full price right after it was announced because Rare was good. I had faith they could do this. I actually got really sad once I started playing the game and saw that all that hype was wasted... and there isn't a new first party pirate game coming anytime soon. That's messed up. It's fun with friends, but I've done a lot of regrettable stupid things with friends and still had fun. If you're actually dumb enough to give Alien Isolation a lower score than SoT, you would most likely be the type to have fun with friends watching paint dry, in the rain...

On some other site some idiot removed my comments because I called out the games shortcomings. I hope he gets punched in the nuts every time he falls asleep for the rest of his life. People like that, and everyone of those "critics" who gave this game a positive review, is your ****ing enemy if you're a gamer. They would have every game go to ruin just like this one, when it was supposed to be good

This is a glorified demo or No Mans Sky water edition.

There are 3 voyages that you do and no matter what voyage you pick you end up doing the same things over and over. Go to island X kill some skeletons or go to island Y and dig up a chest. The game is shallow and has very little stuff to keep players coming back for more. Right now the only thing your working for is gold so you can buy some skins to look cool the problem here is the skins are over priced because they dont have enough skins to sell. For example there are several coats that all look almost identical the only difference is the color there is no variety in the gear you can buy.

PVP can be fun at times having epic ship battles but those only happen 10 percent of the time. If you do try to level up fast then do a raid that takes 2-3 hours because you have to not only fight through waves of skeletons but you also have to deal with people that troll you. I can not count how many times my group has done a raid only to have some sloop show up steal the key then hide it so we cant find it. This is aggravating because you just wasted 3 hours not really enjoying the content because its so much rinse and repeat and you have nothing to show for your wasted time.

There is also the issue with the fact that all the islands are identical sure they have different placement of assets but none of them have a unique character that makes me reorganize them as soon as I step foot on them. The servers right now only support 7 ships so the world feels like a empty place. If you want a ship simulator where you spend most of your time on a boat doing nothing then this is the game for you. I would say take advantage of the game pass and try the game for 14 days and then sign up for a month of the game pass. This game IMO is only worth $15-$20 not the full fledged 60 or more that Microsoft wants.

Such a beautiful game. The art is clearly very well-done.

However, for $60 there is no real game. The only three missions you really get are so pathetically repetitive. You could play for a single hour and finish every single mission type possible.

Expand

    Minha opinião negativa;

Let us start this review off with a question. Did some of you people that are reviewing this game even play it? How can anyone in their right mind justify giving this game a 7-10 rating?

    Pros
    -beautiful water effects
    -PIRATES
    -unique game environment

    Cons
-4 hours of content tops unless you want to spend the 200+ to reach pirate legend doing the same quests over and over and over again on an endless grind of GO TO POINT A, GO TO POINT B AND GET EXP
-0 progression at all, completing quests does nothing but give you exp and gold that go towards pure cosmetic customization of your ship and pirate
-the Kraken is literally just a tentacle simulator with a low resolution texture slapped on it that is more of an annoyance than an actual threat
-PVP is completely unsatisfactory. It devolves into players waiting on the enemy ship and killing them as they spawn with no chance of fighting back.
-Doing skull forts is impossible most of the time because if you do sink the enemy ships that are incoming 99% of the time, they spawn not even 2 minutes away infinitely with a fresh supply of cannonballs, wooden planks, and healing items. It is an arduous grind of seeing who will tire out first and leave.
-THE PRICE POINT, how can this game demand $60 when games that are worth $15-$30 have had infinitely more content, progression, and customization options on their releases.

Final Thoughts: Simply do not buy this game, it is a cash grab by mircrosoft and rare.ltd to make a quick buck off the hype train this game had going for it.

Sea of Thieves is a really fun game. However, because of the lack of rules, it's really abusable. In my first 20 hours of gameplay, this is what I've noticed.

    Camping
Camping outposts is really common and really popular. As a sloop player for the first 10 hours if I saw a 4 man camping the outpost it became "time to visit another outpost". That kind of gameplay isn't fun. As a 4 man, I found that while unloading we'd just get barraged by other groups and have some but a very small portion stolen. This also isn't fun. Its the equivalent of dying while turning in a quest to only realize you have to do the quest again entirely. In WOW they have guards that punish players for killing in certain areas but still allowing it. Not every outpost should be a safe zone but there should be at least 1 area where you can safely turn in quests. A lot like a pirates haven.

    Spawn Abuse
In my last 5 hours of playing I was with a fairly well coordinated 4 man. We were taking a stronghold and halfway through someone tried to sink our ship. No big deal we take them on and enjoy the action. We sink their ship after landing 15 shots to the submerged part of the ship. So we go back to the stronghold and keep on fighting it while a few of our guys repair then meet back up. The guys who we just sunk respawn and come over. We sink them again. We continue the stronghold. They come over again they finally sink us and the stronghold was at the boss. We lost once but because spawning is abusable we lost a lot of work. To me, there should be some kind of New Life Rule or NLR. The fact that we sunk them in a completely fair matchup should have been the end of that quarrel. Extremely lame that you can win and those who lost get to abuse respawning until they win if their spawns are lucky enough. To me, this feels like I'm wasting my time playing. I enjoyed taking the stronghold I enjoyed fighting the enemies. I did not enjoy getting cheesed and the game permits it. Which pretty much negates any fun I was having.

    Quests
Quests are highly repetitive. Maybe scale difficulty quicker. A lot of the level 15 quests feels no harder than the level 1. You have skeletons you have bosses use them. Too many quests demand the same thing without variation in difficulty. Every now and then you do get a good hard one but it's not often. Also for merchant quests, it would be nice to turn it in anywhere since outpost camping is a thing and its hard enough doing the merchant quests for fun anyways.

    NonQuest Items
Nonquest items contribute jack all to your rank in that guild. It really should contribute just as much since getting items from quests is actually easier since it screams "THE LOOT IS RIGHT HERE".

    Price
For 60$ you won't get much for variety here. Realistically the game should cost 20$ or 30$ the 60$ is a cash grab and a joke until the price is brought down I do not recommend playing this game.

    Conclusion
It's not bad but if you already have gamepass do not pay the 60$ on this game it will leave you with regret. I would actually recommend buying gamepass for a week and you'll experience all this game has to offer for 10$.

    Cheers and happy Sailing!

We have nothing but respect for Rare's vision with Sea of Thieves, but it is a game as likely to chew you up and spit you out, as it is to embrace you. If the wind is in your favour then it can be a delight, but a storm is never far off if you lose momentum. The real test of the quality and efficacy of Rare's plan will be in how it manages to evolve and grow in the weeks and months to come. [Issue#199, p.67]
