It's amazing how this game manages to surprise and improve the formula of its predecessor in a wonderful way. Nintendo proves to us that there's nothing good that can't get even better.

Legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom is truly the sequel to breath of the wild. It allows creativity in every puzzle and battle. I got close but never in the times that I failed did it feel like the game’s fault. It was my fault for not thinking strategically enough or just needing a few more arrows. I am far from beating this game, but I spent almost 20 hours playing and I got it three days ago. I stayed up playing longer than I’d like to admit. Get the game you won’t regret it. Expand

Though I would confidently bet my life's savings on Tears of the Kingdom winning game of the year, I did rate it only 9/10, because one very large and important area of the game (If you've played it, you can probably guess) clearly doesn't live up to its full potential, often feeling repetitive and empty. But despite that, I still thoroughly enjoy every aspect of this game.

From the start of the tutorial area, to the overworld, story and gameplay, you really do feel like you're playing the exact same game, with a few tweaks and new gimmicks.

It took Nintendo 6(!) years to develop this game, which you should really count as DLC, and not a new game in it's own.

I lost interest about 2/3 into it, because the magic I felt playing Botw in 2017, just isn't present here anymore. I genuinely hope others can find more enjoyment with it than I, but for me it feels like a chore unfortunately..

I don't care very much for the story as it is just a remix of the same legend of Zelda formula (that can be good or bad depending one one's perspective) and the characters can be vastly generic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda Tears Of the Kingdom is one of the greatest games to ever release. Many games give open world freedom so you can do whatever you please, but this game goes beyond that in so many ways. You can fuse whatever you want to you weapons. Meat sword? You got it! Spear spear? I guess if you want. You can go on with so many combinations whether you want them to be hilarious or seriously powerful. Another this g you can do in this game is using ultrahand to connect objects together. You can make insane vehicles, go to the sky barrier (I tried it), make homing laser robots. The possibilities are infinite! I personally like connecting tons of rockets to vehicles so that they go super fast. The story itself isn't extraordinary, but decent, but the model for ganondorf is beautiful, the cutscenes can be very impressive for a switch game, and the final dragon battle is a super climactic ending (although the battle isn't very fun). I do think that Zelda getting undraconified at the end is kind of weak and makes the plot less meaningful, but it's a minor issue. Another detail is the amiibos. The new link amiibo does not have impressive drops at all, but the other amiibos give paraglider fabrics which are very nice additions which add lots of fun to your gameplay I personally like the windwaker one and the demon king one. Another thing I like is that you don't need to rely on amiibos and RNG to get the armor from other games. They are located in the depths underneath hyrule. The depths are actually really fun to explore. Even though they're stressful at first, you eventually find your way around. I currently have 102/120 lightroots. Anyways I think that the legend of Zelda tears of the kingdom is an excellent game and is up to par with ocarina of time and link to the past. Expand

That said, my score is 8My initial review of this game was based on the starting content of Tears of the Kingdom which is a definite improvement on the previous title. However, since then I've become aware of the game's many faults of which a couple are pretty severe. This isn't to say TotK is a bad game, it's absolutely one of the best games to come out, but it's far from perfect. That said, my score is 8 because the gameplay mechanics are phenomenal; this is best gameplay I've experienced, but I need to talk about the game's faults because they're really bad.

    1) The worst offense this game makes is that which all media and culture should strive to avoid: numbness of emotions.

In a story about the impending end of the world because the Demon King had be reborn, his minions mustering their might, and all the peoples of the world fighting for their lives the story chooses revolve around archeology into an ancient people who were so hedonistic that they didn't even create art. The Zonai are not master warriors, nor mystical wizards, they were lazy people who had their every need looked after by robots... In a game when the main villain is not famine, overwork, or disease, but a war. The Zonai were undone because they were lazy and didn't heed the warnings of people far more knowledgeable of the current threat that they needed to prepare for war. It turns out the people of the current time were far more suited to combating the threat than the Zonai were because all the current time people are warriors.

I stepped into this game thinking the Zonai were mystical god-warriors, but what I found was that the Zonai were boring. Nobody in the current time of the story could use anything to fix their current ailments from the Zonai; because their problems aren't automation related. They don't need to relax; they need to stand and fight, but they're already capable. So why do the game's people take such interest in this lazy forgettable culture? Everything is a dull lime green or white with the Zonai and everything is either a robot or a gadet; they had no culture. Their history was frolicking in the gardens... How are a people staring down the very reincarnation of death supposed to be so enthralled about that they forgo fighting for their lives?

    2) You get followers in this game that have unique abilities, but for some ungodly reason activating it is the same button you use to interact with objects in the world. Yes, I rank this as almost as high as total tone deafness, because in this game items you get from slaying enemies is EVERYTHING. You cannot fight in this game unless you pick up enemy drops. How does this matter, well not to spoil anything, but a few of the followers you get have extremely useful abilities... That so happen to destroy or remove the very items that are the only way to progress in the game. Additionally, these followers decide that they just NEED to walk straight into you every single second of the day. You cannot interact with the world if these followers are following you. You literally have to desummon your followers, which is locked behind a massive menu, in order to be able to pick things up without destroying them. You wouldn't think this would be the most fun destroying thing ever, but in this game, when enemy items are literally your only method of survival, it gets really old really quick.

Alright, so I've talked about the game's downsides, let me talk about what this game does well:
-If you see something interesting, go to it. You'll get a reward. Not a unique reward, but a guaranteed reward of some sort.
-This game is so good at basic exploration, I say basic because oh my god does it fall flat on environmental story telling- the last game was excellent at it by the way, that you can mark an objective and not reach it for several real-world days. Saying this game is full of things to discover doesn't do it justice. There is only discovery in this game, but it's going to be of the same bland things: re-spawning resource nodes, golden poop, and golden orbs. That's it.
-Combat. Surprisingly, this game's combat is actually really good if you try to exploit it. The whole game's premise is that you should try to cheat... And cheating the combat is REALLY fun. Actual cheats are being patched out, so technically, if you find a nifty work around that makes the game more fun, and the combat more exciting, it's technically intended, but it feels like cheating and it's a great feeling.
-Puzzles. Again, the whole game is built around cheating around the game's challenges, so feel free to try to cheat through the game. That's what it's made for, and holy cow does it deliver. These puzzles are the best puzzles in gaming... And that's WITH "cheating," because nothing's truly cheating unless it's patched out. They've understood their own systems VERY well, and have balanced things so that you have to learn a new "cheat" to get through the game when it's time to learn.

Action-Adventure in a stunning open world that re-invents what anyone thought possible. Shifting the gameplay through the sky, land and depths while maintains a cohesive and immersive experience is something no other game has perfected. To tie each of these planes into rich gameplay is a feat that an indie developer (such as myself) dreams to accomplish but often gets lost on the staggering amounts of possibilities to account for. Couple this with intuitive abilities like UltraHand and Ascend, players can truly write their own narrative for their own personal journey of Links. We can all tell different stories for how we happened upon this treasure, or approached this puzzle. There is no wrong anymore, TotK saw to that.

Nintendo and company have taken a world, that’s largely been explored down to its rocks - and shaped it into an epic new quest that begs to be explored… and they waste no time in giving Link the arsenal of abilities that absolutely tower over the previous title. So while you can craft a flying mine cart to carry you over a large distance - using a rocket to give you the necessary take off speed, players will still drop down at the site of a new well or cave that beggars exploration.

The storyline follows the same memory-style approach experienced in the titles predecessor, but it is truly brought to life throughout Hyrules many different cultures and occupants. You can engage with everyone, discovering new quests or a better way to make a rupee. The story advances at your will, allowing you to pace yourself in an effort to soak up every bit of fun.

UltraHand as an ability is a historical achievement in itself. Nintendo panders to the crafters of the world with an arsenal of possibilities that I’m still trying to grasp on how they did this on the senior year Switch console. There is nothing you can’t create from imagination - and no better world to do it in.

I tip my hat to Nintendo for always putting gameplay quality as a priority since the days of me selecting a title as a kid - looming for that golden seal of quality. We are the Nintendo generation, and TotK is a reminder that gaming represents our dream, and that anything is possible.

Breath of the Wild was a very good game but with a side of flaws. Tears of the Kingdom fixes most of these flaws and turns them into some of the most amazing experiences.

    Story
The story had a huge improvement since BoTW. The story is much more engaging with all the characters. Not just the main characters but alot of the NPCs and the environment is engaged with whats happening in each area and how our hero Link will solve it. The story is not mind boggling and still needs improvement because it is very predictable, it can be better in alot of ways but this is miles better than what we had in BoTW.

NPCs are alot more aware of their surroundings and everything that Link does. Enemies now work together instead of fighting Link one after another. BoTW had very well scripted enemy behaviour outside and inside combat but ToTK reuses all of it and magnifies everything. Even after hours of playing enemies shows unique behaviour that still amazes me.

    Weapons, Durability and Fuse ability
I wish it had more variety with weapon types such as dual wield, katanas, daggers, etc. You can technically turn a sword into a scythe or a claymore into a sledgehammer with the new fuse ability but at the end of the day its still a "sword" or a "claymore". The weapon durability is still here but im all for it. I believe weapon durability is an essential part for a vast open world game like ToTK. Having weapons break means you have strategise and use different types of weapons with different properties. This was a problem in BoTW though because weapons broke often and it was simply just not worth killing monsters knowing it will take off durability and offering close to nothing in return. In ToTK, ALL enemies drop something that is useful, yes all of them in my experience. All of them have a scenario where it can be used for something such as fusing, using them while making Zonai devices, quests, combat and much more. This creates an incentive to fight monsters unlike BoTW where ignoring them were a better option.

    Shrines
They are mostly the same with the same formula but this time the puzzles are much more open ended where there are unlimited solutions to one puzzle in most of the shrines. They basically give you infinite tools to work your way out and however YOU want to complete it. This makes shrines much more enjoyable and not just a chore to complete.

Side quests are a HUGE improvement. I never bothered to finish or do most of the side quests in BoTW unless it was a shrine quest. They gave little rewards with uninteresting stories and were hardly worth it, ToTK changes it by making the rewards very useful and very dependable by strategically placing them in areas where you need those rewards the most along with the addition of new materials and improvement to the stories in the side quests they have become very fun and you will never get tired of doing them and it wont feel like a chore.

    Exploration
BoTW had remarkable exploration which was praised by many but ToTK compressed alot more things in its world and makes it much more dense. Every corner or direction you look, there is going to be something you can do or something that will catch your eye whether it be caves, shrines, NPCs, monsters and much much more. I was never in a situation where I didn't know what to do or felt like i had nothing to do. This couples with the creativity and the infinite amount of solutions available to you to do these things which makes this game incredible by exploration alone.

    Issues with ToTK
Frame rate drops in certain areas but this is entirely Nintendos fault for not innovating. The switch does not need to change, its hybrid feature is good enough that can stay alive forever, we just need better hardware that can at the very least guarantee us 60 FPS. The game is still beautiful but this is kind of an insult to the devs who put such great care and work into the game.
The story was thrilling and better than BoTW its still very predictable and the way you have to watch memories is too similar to BoTW, I wish link was actually in the story while it happened or make a story be like so. Nonetheless I still liked Ganondorf as a villain but I wish we had more screentime or more involvement with other important characters seen in the memories.

TL-DR, ToTK just better in every way. Go play.

I agree that this is a high quality open field game filled with literally loads of enjoyable contents. But somehow I felt no urge after reached the ending even though enjoyed playing over 80 hours.
This is perhaps because I liked the main storyline and I didn't enjoy combat mechanics which need too much improvisation.

The world is brimming with fun and exciting things to discover, every single side quest feels as though it had been hand crafted, characters acknowledging small things that you do, such as wearing specific sets of armour, make the world feel alive and the journey from leaving the Great Sky Island up to the final battle is one of the most engaging, exhilarating experiences I've had in a game. It took me 100 hours to complete every shrine, do all the side quests I felt I wanted to and take down the final boss and honestly, it felt like every minute spent in this iteration of Hyrule was time well spent.
Bosses and Dungeons this time around, when compared to what was seen in Breath of the Wild, are also a significant improvement. While still not necessarily on par with the likes of what is seen in Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, the amount of creativity these new Dungeons allow for when traversing and the ways you have to engage with each boss differently still makes them a joy to overcome.

I would recommend this game to anyone who wants to experience an epic adventure on a legendary scale.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a great entry in the Zelda franchise and is absolutely worth a playthrough. I'd go so far as to say if you are going to play one game from the franchise in your life this is the one. That being said the game is full of issues that I think are indicative of Nintendo's lack of interest in pushing boundaries of any kind while also competing with its own characters lack of development and Zelda's own personal development being one of the coolest we have ever seen not just in this series but in many Video Game stories.

I like that they brought back the concept of the sages, having that portion of Zelda lore back in such a big game for the franchise was great. And seeing the first rulers of the land of Hyrule was equally mystifying and interesting as a long time fan of the series. But the sages themselves had zero character development. Even if we include what happened with them in the first game. e.g. Tulin the sage of Wind and a Rito is just a generic teenage kid. they do not appear to have any other defining traits aside from this. Riju is still *just* a Gerudo leader and Sidon is your run of the mill himbo. All of this culminates in their powers which are at best clunky to use, but most of the time they are just useless side mechanics that the game could easily have left out. While it is clear that the building was meant to be the star of this game one of, at least in this gamers opinions, best parts of Breath of the Wild was that the guardian abilities were supplemental to the runes that you collected at the beginning of the game. whether they were defensive or offensive, or hell just let you traverse the wind better, they all had a purpose and were easily used as you played the game unlike the sage powers in Tears of the Kingdom.

The boss fights were immaculate, and each one felt so unique. Finding them again in the depths and getting to play through them a second time with the slightly added difficulty of the gloom was a lot of fun. The Ganondorf fight while not initially at the epic scale I would have hoped for proved to be my favorite in the series. I felt like for the first time I had become strong enough to stand toe to toe with the demon king himself and the final form when it all took to the skies was breathtakingly epic.

Overall I did really enjoy this game, but unfortunately it just left me wanting in so many ways. Characters who didn't even begin to get a beefier backstory or even a whisper of growth throughout this ordeal were forced upon you, while the clunky mechanics and seeming lack of forethought made it strange to move through the world or even use the new abilities that were given to you. I see why this game is going to be the GOTY, but truly it does not deserve it and it's a shame that other titles that have more fleshed out stories and mechanics will be overlooked because this game lets you build a hover bike. I think the ending of this game is a perfect allegory to how I felt when I beat it. Like link sitting on the grass with nothing left to defeat in the world, all I wanted was a hug and instead I just saw some credits roll.

All 4 characters say the same thing when you help them. "Oh, it's my destiny to fight with you Link!?" If you don't know the interactions of the characters between the last game (i.e Prince Sidon), you won't really feel connected to the sequel story. Speaking of that, why was there no mention of anyone from the last game or the divine beasts? Urbosa, mipha?:(

So in this sequel, you actually don't get the freeze or bomb skills anymore. Now you have... ultrahand where you can attach things to everything. Thus this game became a build 2 win game. The other power Ascend, i thought it would be amazing. The power to go through anything vertically above you whether it be, mountains, monster hideouts, or caves under the towers. Yet it feels hardly utilized in the game other than shrines. And some terrain ascend doesn't even work on.

I have done all 4 temples. They were ok. The wind temple was pretty easy since you could use wind even from rooms that were locked behind gates.

I think i am not the target audience for the building nature of this game.

THE MOST ANNOYING THING of my 30hr playthrough- Pulling out your bow, scrolling through 100 of items you can attach to the arrow. This is not good UI design. It's like scrolling simulator in the middle of combat? Who said that was ok?

Nintendo needs to make a linear zelda game which plays like red dead redemption 2 did. As much as a developmental feat the physics of this game are, I think more of the annoyances outweigh the better areas.
You can still make an open world game with deeper exploration into the story and the ability to mess around with the environment as seen in RDR2..

There was no postgame after ganondorf!
-This time I was definitely waiting for there to be postgame: some new side quests would have opened up and I could have explored the rest of the world and help rebuild whole Hyrule.

    MAP
-Sky islands were fun and the underground world is huge!
-But I expected to find slightly different biomes there, tough I won't take any points off from this.
-Still.. With this game alone I wasn't quite able to fully achieve that same adventuring feeling than in Botw. Mostly because I already knew every major location on the ground, even tough there were a lot of caves and new enemies.
-I would have liked that they expanded the hyrule ground map even little and add new cities (even one) and would have made the old cities bigger!

    RUNES
-All the runes were good/great and somewhat surprisingly I liked the Ascend
    the most!

    WEAPONS
-Weapons still break but fuse was ok/fun so no points off. Tough I still would prefer that you would be able to build/upgrade your own weapons with blacksmith/anvil and they wouldn't break

    SHRINES & DUNGEONS
-the shrines were generally more fun than in Botw.
-I liked these dungeons better than Divine beasts

    Summary
-I would say it is as good as botw but for new players it's even better.
But for those who already completed Botw and are really familiar with the old the map,
you might not be able to get the same level of adventure feeling when exploring on ground, witch is a HUGE part of the game.

But since this is direct sequel.. If you think Botw and Totk as one experience, then totk is pretty much a perfect postgame for Botw! ...well it's kinda overly large to be just postgame but if I think it this way then its 100/100!

Next game should be on whole new world! third time would be way too much..

This game is the disappointment of the year. I got it for free to test it and following all the hype I expected something great but what I ultimately got was nothing more than bad.

There are some positives; the game looks nice and the environments have a nice vibe to them. Furthermore, exploration is fun and the combination mechanisms are innovative and have a lot of potential. The allow for some really creative approach but are restricted by the clunky controls quite a bit (see next part for more on this). Too often a valuable building part falls down into the void and is gone until the game is restarted. That's not too bad though because it gives a sense of caution.

The music is decent and sound effects fit the ambiance well but neither are something special. Voice acting is well done for the few spoken lines there are, but again, Link doesn't respond verbally to anyone.

If that was everything about this game, it'd probably get a 7 or 8 score but the combat and the controls is what's the real catastrophe. They're just bad, really bad.
First and foremost, who'd though putting the "run button" on th topmost button was a good idea. Not only does it hurt my hands but it also blocks access of the other face buttons. It's also so unintuitive, as other similar games have the run command on the downmost button, a shoulder button or the right analog stick.

Even worse is the combat itself. While it doesn't help that everything breaks on you in the almost worst possible moment, switching weapons and gear is a chore in how the buttons are configured. That's as unintuitive as running. I'd rather open a menu and scroll through it then pressing two buttons while trying to choose the right weapon with a third one.

Finally, the biggest no-go for an action-orientated game the complete absence of an "evade button". You can block attacks with a shield, but if you don't have one you're screwed. Because there is no dedicated evade method you have to run to not get hit, using that stupid button layout, while also trying to get closer to attack. That results in getting hit by enemy attacks a lot, because they have a god-like precision and many hit like a truck, even with a literal pebble causing you to have to deal with even more unintuitive menus to access healing items.

    Conclusion:
I can't recommend anyone to play this game at all because combat and controls are abysmal. Even the most difficult Souls-likes have much better gameplay and are more enjoyable despite their difficulty.

It brings such a sense of catharsis and closure, in a way that very few AAA open-world games seem to feel is necessary anymore.

If this was the last Zelda game ever made, I would say they went out swinging for the moon and stuck the landing.

Do not miss it. And if you do play it, for god's sake actually finish it.

Forget game of the year. "Tears of the Kingdom" is game of the decade.

Sure the content when you reached your destination per half hour walk is brilliant, but the filler sucked much joy out of the experience. Tears of The Kingdom is Zelda without the excess fat , trimmed and buffed to a mirror shine, housed in the finest of gold. The art style is impeccable and frankly I am unsure Nintendo can outdo their input in the next Zelda installment or the next Nintendo Switch as they have set their own bar, impossibly and impeccably high. Exploring was great fun in BOTW, but now the landscape seems plain with large expanses of emptiness with nothing to do. My horse really gets on my nerves as it is difficult to steer and has a mind of its own. The dialogue with the characters is also tedious - too much reading, and there are so many cut scenes. The graphics are blurry and it really looks like an old game. TOTK hasn't evolved, it's just a rehashed BOTW with some additional powers, some of which I really can't be bothered to use. The building power just becomes repetitive very early on. Recent games like Elden Ring just make TOTK look outdated. Expand

This is the most infuriating good game I've ever played, but it's going to get straight 9/10's because it's a LoZ game.

The world is expansive, and absolutely jam packed full of stuff to do, the crafting system is easy to use, but so nuanced the physics involved can only be described as some kind of black magic, how Nintendo pulled off such complexity in their engine is beyond my comprehension as a mere mortal. The plot is fairly simple but works as a motivator for exploring their world.

But this game isn't perfect, in fact, in many regards it's actually terrible. The game is locked to 30 FPS with dips into the 20's due to the switch's awful hardware. The controls are awful, as Nintendo are trying to do too much with too few buttons and have crammed the game full of items that you'll need to scroll through mid combat. Basic combat is sluggish and hasn't really been touched since the N64 days, except for the addition of parrying which isn't very useful, and flurry rush, which is super broken. The control system is so bloated, they didn't even bother to put your companion abilities on it, you need to find and speak to them mid combat to use them, and for bosses, they're often required, having multiple companions summoned makes this almost impossible, and you'll constantly be triggering them by accident when trying to perform other tasks.

Weapon durability makes its return from Breath of the Wild, and personally I still don't like it. Yes, it forces constant switching and some people may dislike that, but for me personally, I dislike it because it's ruined chest rewards. Finding new equipment isn't exciting any more, it's just another stick for me to mess around fusing and using for 5 minutes before it breaks, and speaking of fusion, whoever designed the menuing behind it needs to be fired. You acquire your weapon, equip it, open the menu, find the fusion material, hold it, close the window, drop it, open the power wheel, select fusion, target the material on the ground, press Y and it'll fuse to your current weapon. You have to repeat this for every. single. weapon, otherwise it's weak AF and will break in a handful of hits.

And it's not just weapon management that's a pain in the ass, armour upgrades are basically mandatory or everything will two shot you, from around the second temple onwards, or earlier if you kill a lot of stuff. The issue, is armour upgrading is locked behind an entirely optional and poorly signposted series of side quests and requires specific monster materials, some of which are very rare. So your options are to drop what you're doing and go farm, or never get hit. And if you thought you could just take them down before they hit you, think again, because anything in the black or silver tier is super spongey. You'll break multiple good weapons trying to take down your first silver moblin.

In conclusion, the world is amazing, the crafting is a miracle of modern video game design and the plot is serviceable, but everything in terms of performance, combat and controls really sucks. It feels like I've been given the most amazing meal to eat, but I'm struggling because they replaced the cutlery with a jackhammer.

With open world game, "usually" there are a lot to offer and with that many feature and content it's extremely hard to find a perfect harmony for all of them which is why TOTK still has some flaws based on my experience after finishing the game for around 115+ hours.

    1. The sage ability is comparable to the warriors but their AI that help you in battle is truly bad. They rarely attack, hindering your view and just get in your way in battle. The implementation of sage support is just way too rough or sluggish for now.

    2. The fuse material with arrow is a "wow" factor for me but could you please create a special load-out like we can customize just certain material for fusing with arrow or just for throwing with our hand. Yes, there's a sort function but come on, that should be an easy fix by just creating a load-out feature so we don't have to scroll for too long.

    3. I'm impress that Korok Forest is running at a stable frame rate but now the Ultrahand ability is the new virus for FPS drop in TOTK. Seriously, everytime Ultrahand got activated, the FPS just drop significantly.

    4. The focus or lock on function still sucks in my opinion and the range also way too short. The battle with Demon King feels rough because of this because you can switch target in lock-on mode.

That's it, seems many but all of that point can't compare to how outstanding the game is. The story also far superior that BOTW, kind of confuse with some reviewer that rate the story as OK or bad but well, narrative is a subjective matter. The story makes me understand why it called "Tears of the Kingdom"

    GOTY of 2023 for sure

・Overwhelming lack of tutorials and terrible controls
Characters who have forgotten about the protagonist
・Cid, who didn't bother to mention the existence of the betrothed despite our deepening friendship
    ・Zelda takes over Link’s home

While there are various dissatisfactions, the worst aspects are the story and the excessive focus on Princess Zelda.

Zelda's motives for her actions continue to lack any genuine love for the people. She has become even more self-centered and self-absorbed. I can't find even a trace of willingness to help her. It all feels like a contrived and convenient happy ending.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
