Please bring the old Zelda feel back. Not the top down versions (although they are better then this and breath of the wild) but i want Twlight Princess and Majorias mask style and yes OOT along with WW. This is just an empty open world game with little story and nothing new. Love Zelda Games and I love Nintendo to death but plz stop with emptyness.

Altough some of the Bosses could be better all the new abilities make this game a completly new Zelda game. Many people say that Totk is just an DLC and i understand that but with the addition of the dephts and the sky it's a new and fresh experience. The best thing in the game in my opinion is... YOU CAN ROAST KOROKS NOW

As a Zelda fan who has played and beaten every single Zelda game out there from Zelda 1 to totk, I wanted to give my opinion. The game is awesome, very entertaining. At the same time, it is lacking in a lot of points as a Zelda game AND as a game in general and few official reviews are talking about these. You may find similar points on forums liked reddit.

    As a Zelda game:
-Story and especially how it's told is one of the best parts of older Zelda games. In totk it is told AGAIN like in botw with short memory clips. This leads to small character development and low emotional investment. I never felt once in totk what I e.g. felt for Midna in tp when she was dying and you had to carry her with the sad piano music.
-Totk ignores continuity on a next level. It's obvious the devs made a giant effort of welcoming new players and pretty much ignored players that beat botw. So many characters you already interacted with greet you as if you were a stranger. Some of them even going out of their way to say things like "this is the first time you are here, right?". No one EVER in the entire game says anything about the divine beasts or the sheikah slate. They even showed Zelda surprised by the ability of taking pictures with a camera, even though she already could do that with the sheikah slate before.... This all would have been so easily fixed with small lines like "Link, you may not remember me, but I'm xyz" or for the lore of botw put some hidden note in some cave saying: "This is person x. I just did xzy to the divines beasts and sheikah slates because person y put me in charge to". Instead, it almost feels like botw never happened and a lot of fans even theorise this to put their minds at rest, lol.
-Dungeons are extremely underwhelming. They are small, very easy to solve and the boss poses no challenge. The completion time can be compared with dungeons from the Oracle series for the gameboy (20-40 min).
-The botw formula for dungeons is back and it probably will stay forever. In their quest for non-linearity the devs broke the one concept that every Zelda game did right: dungeons. There are 5 terminals you need to activate and that's it. Some of them require you climbing a rock, opening a door and there it is. You won't get stuck as you used to in oot or in tp or in alttp or albw. A game of this caliber should have massive temples where you would spend days figuring this out. Not here.

    As a game in general:
-The sky islands were the biggest selling point of the marketing. They are at the same time the least important piece in the game. There are only a handful (maybe 3-8?) of very small islands per region with a very repetitive pattern. The only "big" sky island is the one you start the game in BY FAR. Very underwhelming.
-The biggest new point in the game which was never marketed were the depths, which are as big as the overworld. They are really fun at first, but after having explored everything, I can say that it is very repetitive. There is nothing much to explore nor visual incentives to enjoy being there. The same textures get used again and again all over the place. In botw you would stop on top of a mountain and enjoy the view. In totk you do the same in the depths but there is nothing to enjoy. You only see the same gray, dull texture everywhere, regardless of where in the depths you are. Nothing visually pleasing.
-The rewards are overly underwhelming. Instead of introducing lots of new clothing, they added the old amiibo clothes as actual rewards for completing challenges. There are five variations of the classical green tunic, namely the green tunic of Wind Waker, TP, OOT, Skyward Sword, and ALTTP I think. They all look green and have really small differences, adding up to 15 different rewards. You may defeat a very hard boss or solve a difficult puzzle or just explore and get as a reward the hat from OOT. I love every Zelda game but I could not care less about looking like Link from TP or in OOT or WW, especially when those items are taking up space of actual good new rewards the game could introduce.

Great game but still lacking on very specific details that sadly affect the experience strongly.

Easiest review I've ever submitted, the game is almost perfect. The world is different enough from Breath of the Wild that it feels fresh and exciting, like I'm experiencing Breath of the Wild for the first time again, something that I never expected to get. Easy recommendation for anyone, fans or otherwise.

Yes, the map is recognisable from its predecessor. Yes, the graphics aren't as realistic as whatever grinding live service BS is put out on other platforms. But it's a significant upgrade over BotW, and looks amazing in the same way The Windwaker did. Mechanics are straight up fun, I loved the story, and all around I'll be playing it for months to come.

If you are not one of those people and haven't exploded in anger trying to figure out my I.P. address to SWAT me, you're probably going to enjoy this game. I am willing to bet if you are a gamer at all, there is a genuine chance that 97% of the people reading this will love this game, why?

The first open world since Witcher 3 that feels this content deep, begging you just to explore and have fun knowing the whole while you are going around genuinely interested in what you're doing that you will 100% run into things you didn't know you would be finding, that add to the overall experience as you go. Remember, Fromsoftware cited Breath of the Wild which feels like the tech demo leading up to Tears of the Kingdom, as the core inspiration for last year's GOTY Elden Ring.

I could go on, but it's everything we wanted Breath of the Wild to be, and more, a lot more.

If you are on the fence, don't be, one of the finest video game experiences of all time.

I have 85 hours in it, and i think i'm done. I approached the game as a giant new adventure and took my time exploring, no googling when i got stuck on something, doing side quests, just generally roaming around and enjoying things.

Around the 60 hour mark I started to feel that the game was a little more empty than BOTW. The shrine puzzles were for the most part super trivial, the story was kind of meh and seemed like a bit of a rehash.

The new abilities are kinda cool, especially the zonia stuff, but with the battery factor just get rather annoying after some time.

Speaking of annoying, the under world is just a giant load of frustration. Can't see without stopping every 20 seconds to throw a bulb, cant get to objective due to giant invisible mountains that really has no path around it, but since it's pitch black and you dont know that you spend 3 hours trying to make a huge circle back to a dot before you finally give up.

I really don't know how to put it, the magic that was in BOTW just isn't there. It seems like a 70 dollar DLC, which would have been ok i guess if the game play was actually engaging. It really just feels like an add on to botw, and not a good one at that.

I will say it does have the BOTW charm, the characters are fun, the music is wonderful. But after 80+ hours I just didn't care about playing anymore, much less finishing.

I was really disappointed because I had anticipated this for so long.

What do I mean by this? Well, for starters. The game is underwhelming due to the fact that nothing much has changed since the last game gameplay wise other than the crafting mechanic. Which, to me personally. Is fun for a few hours, until you have to build something that can fly to get to the sky islands. This involves grinding for materials and hoping that you just so happen to stumble across the right gumball machine that spawns just the right items to build such a thing. A lot of the drops you will need is based off of chance and from my personal experience. The items that I needed from these dumb gumball machines to get to the sky islands. Such as rockets, balloons, flame dragon things, etc. Seem to have a rarer chance of dropping in large quantities. Which makes trying to get to these islands a chore more than it is fun. Some people enjoy the new mechanics of this game. I, however, was pretty much over it within the first thirty hours of playing and only used these new mechanics when I needed to.

Despite how I feel about these new mechanics. There are still annoying, quality of life issues that I wished the Zelda team put more time into. For starters, the menu. This menu SUCKS! I hate that I can't organize anything. It's such a chore to attach the right item to an arrow in a timely manner. On a bad day, it will take me thirty seconds to find a bomb arrow in my inventory before I can attack. There's no way to favorite an item. There isn't a way to create a separate menu with just the items you want to use. Honestly, I can talk about how horribly put together this menu is for hours! It takes forever to do anything in them! I hate it. I hate it with a passion. On top of that, your partners, oh! Excuse me, your clone partners, have some of the worse attacks and AI issues I have seen in a very long time. Sometimes, your partners will just stand there and do nothing and the powers that they give you is honestly pretty worthless, but most of all. I hate that these partners are not the real thing. Why? I don't get it. There are models already programmed into the game. Why do they have to stay at their respective towns instead of going on the journey with Link? In fact, that could add character development which is sorely needed for many of them. Plus, I want them to spout out battle quotes. These quotes when the real partners are with you are fun to listen to. It just feels like the VA's were completely wasted for this game. Plus, the clones are just so unnecessary and lifeless. I want to feel like their actually there and it's unfortunate that it had to be this way.

Also, horses are back, and they are just as useless as ever. I rode mine for an hour. Hopped off. Forgot about him, and he stayed in that one spot for around sixty hours until I remembered I left him there. Then, I put him back in the stall where he belonged. Never to see the light of day again.

Now for the overwhelming section. This game is cruel. Actually, it's too cruel a lot of the time. To summarize, I got to a point in this game where I had about ten hearts, which I felt pretty good about. Despite that, I went into a small squirmish. Thinking that I was well prepared, and got one shotted by a bobkin with a stick. I mean, come on. Why have hearts at all? I would be more forgiving if he had a sword, or some kind of over leveled weapon, but no. Stick dudes, as I like to call them, will be your worst enemy. Especially the long stick dudes that have perfect aim and will one shot you. Sometimes regardless of how many hearts you have, and after having this happen. Even in the late game. I stopped bothering to level up my hearts and maxed out my stamina as much as I could. The point is this game needed to be balanced more fairly. I know that BOTW was like this too, but I felt like I wasn't getting killed in such ridiculous ways as much as this game does, and that's something that really bothers me.

Other than that, the shrines are still fun. If a little under explained for some of them. The story is fantastic. Raruu and Sonia are awesome. I love them so much that they are now two of my favorite characters in the series. The music is still fantastic as always, and after all is said and done. I actually liked Zelda as a character at the end of it all. TOTK really did her justice. I just wish there were more scenes with Zelda, Sonia and Raruu together, at least a couple more anyway so that I can feel satisfied with it.

Overall, if you like BOTW, you will enjoy this game, but if you are expecting something completely different and don't want more of the same. I would wait on this one or skip it depending on how interested you are to basically replay the same game again. This should not cost seventy dollars, and anyone who says it's worth that price is lying to themselves.

TOTK is certainly good but it has some flaws in it. The story is interesting from the Zelda side but the ending was just ok. I would have loved an aftermath. The story is dulled by a series of repeating events, which kinds of give away the suspense. There is a lot of fetch quests, way too much. Those who contained real stories, where just too few. There are 3 levels of maps: the sky, ground and underworld. I must say the sky part was fun to fly into, but there was barely anything interesting in it. The fighting was frustrating, I don't know how many times I was cheap killed from the back. The camera is to blame in most cases. This time around, the horse riding was horrible. I like the vehicule creation, but getting the auto create around 3/4 of the game isn't very good. Graphicly the game is the same as the last one. If anything there is way too much fog in this one. Weather effects are superb tho. Getting enough arrows is a pain. I wish the recipe could be obtained but there is a lot of variations in them. Weapons and shields still breaks. The item management (to attach or throw) is quite annoying when you hit 30 items and more. The special power were fun, like ascend and grab. Music was excellent. I give it 75%. If you want a RPG that has an enormous map with a lot of things to pickup and find, that's for you. For the story, it was kind of a generic one with some good parts. Expand

It also has an enthralling and spacious open world with plenty of opportunity to explore and discover. It makes its predecessor feel like a stepping stone to this game's majesty.

As far as criticisms go: I found the game's plot and cutscenes to be mostly vapid and serviceable, barring a few well-delivered lines and powerful moments. However, skipping through them bore no consequences, thankfully. Additionally, the game unapologetically clings to even its more controversial aspects (such as weapon durability), which may alienate anyone who did not enjoy those things in the first game. Having said that, with the widespread appeal Breath of the Wild received, it feels trifling to legitimately critique Tears of the Kingdom for sticking to its guns.

To put it very succinctly, Tears of the Kingdom is more of Breath of the Wild, but with enough new bells and whistles to help it transcend the simplicity of that game. It possesses many of the same pitfalls and quirks, and while many will likely find that appealing, others may not. However, I believe the widespread appeal of Breath of the Wild likely means that most people will find playing through Tears of the Kingdom to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The world is open to explore but by force you must follow the story and if they give you freedom already passing a certain combination of temples and missions. Crazy crafting breaks progress, difficulty and makes enemies just spectators

The meh!: we had already seen the crazy crafting of vehicles in Banjo-Kazooie Nuts and Bolts from 2008-2009 and I didn't see such a stir, what's more, everyone was against this mechanic. We have seen the sky theme in Skyward Sword as an area to explore, it is here but poorly implemented, it is not the core of the game and visiting it is even boring. If the game is called The Legend of Zelda but it's more of a "I want to be Mario Bross" or "I want to be Nuts and Bolt" or "I want to be Henshin Impact" insert things and mechanics just to insert even if they don't make sense and break the lore

    - the classic Zelda experience of gradually unlocking new tools that give you access to new areas is replaced with getting everything in the first hour of playtime and then being shoved out into an open world. there is no sense of being on an epic quest, it's just a sandbox.

    - wherever you go in this vast landscape, whether it's a tropical beach, dense jungle, or snowy mountain top, you'll find the same enemies. it's always a goblin, a bat, a big goblin, etc. there is no sense of place.

    - the grind is annoying - everything breaks and resources are relatively scarce, so in in some ways it is an exercise in barely breaking even. need zonaite for your contraption? you'll break weapons and lose health and ingredients to the point where you're going to have to grind for those things.

    - Nintendo games in general just make you wait 5 seconds over and over and over.

    - the story is interesting and the characters are shallow.

    - my biggest gripe: it just feels empty. there are MASSIVE areas all over the map with just about nothing in them. there are plenty of little scavenger hunt things like korok seeds, but between the slog of collecting resources, cooking, etc, I start to ask myself why. Why am I doing this.

    - in some ways it resembles elden ring in art and themes which just reminds me how much more depth, atmosphere, and spark elden ring has compared to this.

I love Zelda games but this just feels empty.

pros - building stuff is kinda cool, although it feels limited
    - good art
    - some fun puzzles
    - flying is fun

It more then makes up for the lack of the graphics being displayed from the dated Switch hardware. I spent days trying and experimenting all the new thing and have yet to see it all it is truly a massive amount of content.

Story - 10/10 - Better paced and more interesting stories then those told in BotW.

Audio - 10/10 - Great Audio all around everything left me excited, scared, nervous, angry and more.

The story is good enough, if not slightly predictable. Overall if you liked Breath of the Wild you need to buy this game. It's not quite the 10/10 that several reviewers are giving it, but it's a shining example of how to do a sequel right at a time when all other major game developers are dropping the ball.

Most of the negatives I've seen basically say "I'm someone who only plays CoD on my $5K PC" or "If the games not mainly focused on being a book it's bad" or funnily enough "I hated BotW and I hate this too!". So it's just people who wouldn't be playing Nintendo games, or this style of game anyways. I have 80 hours, all story, e.t.c. and in the whole time I recall ;) that it dropped frames 3 times when I obviously went crazy with explosives. It's like people care more about the game leading up to be exactly what they expected a Zelda game to be and just don't care if it's fun. The game does some minor changes to the overworld, but the sky and depths together make it effectively double the map with even more exploration. If you cared about weapons breaking, use the weapon, get its durability low and fuse a rock to it and it'll be full the 1st time. Hate slipping? actually explore the caves and get sticky lizards and make a potion or get the frog armor. does the story not please you like a 500 page novel? It's a freaking open world game the story can't let the game truly be at your pace without being very minor. Like seriously reading comments makes me think if these are your standards that everything needs to be changed, how in the world do we have the same CoD, Fifa e.t.c. games every year, and not just that how do ANY games get direct sequels, like Horizon, Dark Souls, or Halo, those games do what this game did, change a few mechanics, build off the previous and have typically similar story beats while still being familiar enough you don't feel isolated to having 1 favorite. Long winded way of saying I genuinely believe that people either stopped giving games true chances or this is being review bombed. Expand

The bosses in the game were amazing especially since they weren't all the same variant of each other like in BOTW. The physics, building and cooking system are amazing in this game especially since it gives you so many ways to solve a problem. Abilities are also very fun in this game especially the ascend, which is so OP at times. Generally there are not many flaws in this game besides that it reuses some assets from BOTW and although the dungeons are solid, they are not as great as some other 3d Zelda. There are also so many exciting side quests in this game as well such as the mazes and the Yiga Clan- most importantly there is so much to do in this open world and so many different environments to explore. Overall an excellent game that is pretty much a masterpiece especially if you enjoyed BOTW. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tears of the Kingdom was an amazing game, I originally had my doubts about it being a rehash, but with the new Storytelling through Dragontears and modern story arcs. Especially Zelda becoming (and then unbecoming) a damn dragon just to restore the Master Sword is awe inspiring. The Story had me in tears (haha) multiple times for multiple reasons, that's basis for a GOTY in itself.

But the gameplay, oh good God the gameplay was amazing. I could create a freaking tank if I wanted to. One time I couldn't get past the monsters at Fort Hateno, and so I created my "Oh **** Wagon" which was a wagon with walls a roof, and fans. I charged the camp, lit on fire, and escaped on low health laughing the whole time. Yes my design failed, but it also succeeded at the same time, and gave me a good laugh. That's what the gameplay of Tears of the Kingdom does, it makes you laugh, it makes you feel clever, it makes you entertained and wonder "what can I do next?" That's beautiful game design.

All in all, with Gameplay as good as this, Story as good as this, and Graphics as good as the Switch allows. Tears of the Kingdom runs well, and is such a blast to play. I look forward to November, when I watch this game take it's Game of the Year crown, just like it's predecessor.

You would have to consciously decide to spend 10 minutes building a car when you could just walk over there in 2 minutes. My favorite franchise turned its mainline games into an open world gimmick and instead of the fans rejecting it like they should’ve, it was pandered too. I can only hope that Nintendo paid for and manipulated social media influencers to act like the game was an evolution for the franchise and the sheep did the rest. I've played the game for 180 hours and really enjoyed it, but I have some gripes with it. I know this review is going to sound overly negative, but it's only because I can't really elaborate much on the positive parts.

    Overall gameplay 9/10
    Really well-designed overall package.

    Combat 9/10
Objective improvement over botw. You can get really creative with it. Very satisfying. Only things holding it back are the durability system which the devs have done nothing to fix from the botw system, and the performance. I understand that the durability system is there to encourage the player to explore and find new equipment, but they could've made the equipment last at least 4x as long and it would've still been effective. They should have also made it so you need way less koroks to upgrade your inventory, as it is right now, it takes way too many. The performance issues makes the combat and controls feel very sluggish and unresponsive. Trying to time parries/dodges when the game is dropping frames can be inconsistent. The game often eats your inputs as it drops frames. Trying to use the quick menus can be difficult sometimes too due to those issues.

    Zonaite Devices/Building 9/10
Really impressive and surprisingly has fewer limitations than you'd expect.
Although it does has some limitations due to performance:
-You can't attach more than 21 devices at once.
-Devices stop working when you're a certain distance away from them, and that distance is very small.
-Devices despawn when you're a certain distance away from them too.
-Some devices cause really bad frame drops.

    Exploration 10/10
Objective improvement over botw. So much more to do and see in this game.

    Story 0/10
    Terrible. Embarrassing.

    Cutscenes 2/10
Terrible. There are only 2 cutscenes that I liked, and neither of them had a single word spoken. The less dialogue they put in, the better.

    Dialogue 0/10
    Terrible.

    Voice acting (English) 0/10
    Terrible.

    Main Story Characters 1/10
    Annoying. Unbearable.

    Side Characters 7/10
A lot of them are pretty good. Their dialogue is somewhat repetitive though, as most of them talk about the same 2 things on repeat.

    Main Quests 3/10
Tedious for the most part. Very boring with little substance.

    Side Quests 8/10
Much better than the main quests and a lot of them were very enjoyable

    Dungeons 3/10
Mild improvement over botw's dungeons. Still bad.

    Shrines 7/10
    Decent. Nothing memorable.

    Ending 0/10
I'm not gonna spoil any of the details but they did the same thing as in botw. After beating the final boss and watching the final cutscene the game kicks you back to your last save before the fight as if nothing happened. All the NPC's act like you still haven't fought him and still have the same dialogue as before. Deeply unsatisfying and a waste of time. Performance 0/10 The game is supposed to run at 30fps which in of itself is unacceptable for a game released in 2023, but what's worse is that it almost never runs at 30fps. It's usually in the 20's. On top of that, the game has a lot of input lag. Can't wait to play it on an emulator on actual modern hardware. Sages 0/10 They don't listen. Hard to work with. Annoying. Worthless. Never used them outside the main quests. And especially that 5th sage, that sage has to be the worst designed mechanic I've ever seen. It would've been a cool concept if the execution wasn't so bad. Soundtrack 10/10 Major improvement over botw, which was already really good. Not much more to say, it's just really good.

And if you didn't like it, you probably won't like this game. The new abilities add a huge new element of gameplay. You can construct all kinds of things, from vehicles, to traps, to piston engines. The construction ability could have been an entire game of its own. To all the reviews saying "what were they doing for 6 years", it was this. Perfecting the physics and construction system. if constructing things doesn't appeal to you, then you might now see as much value in the game. The fuse ability is cool too. Now all those monster parts you collect have a purpose and you can use them as enhancements to your weapons. I enjoyed seeing what the affect would be of things I fused to my arrows, swords, and shields. The story was good, with some unexpected twists and turns and a unique timeline structure.

Now for the cons. Although I've seen lots of people building all kinds of crazy things, I'm not particularly interested in construction. That leaves the exploration, side quests, and dungeons. Unfortunately not much is different or improved here. The map is mostly the same. The sky islands, although being a main marketing point, are a let down. There's just not that many of them. The surface is the same map as BotW. Yes, many things are different, but it's still the same map and all major landmarks/towns are in the same places. There is an underground area that stretches across the entire map. However, there's not a whole lot here and exploring it is difficult because it's completely dark until you light it. I wish they would have skipped the underground and invested all of their work into the sky islands. The side quests are fine, but I have not played any that were much more memorable than the ones in BotW. There do appear to be more of them, however. For the dungeons, they are also fine. They are more unique in appearance than in BotW, so that is an improvement. But the puzzle solving aspect is the same for them, "activate these 4 things so you can reach the boss" etc.

Overall a good sequel. But the fact that the main map is the same means I can't justify giving it higher than an 8. I really would have enjoyed exploring a whole new Hyrule, but the changes to the map and the new gameplay elements mostly make up for that.

Nintendo delivers again in yet another magnificent Legend of Zelda adventure. I feel it's far superior to its predecessor in multiple ways; For instance, shrines and temple are more fun to complete thanks to the new powers Link's gotten at the beginnin of the game.
Unlike Breath of the Wild at release in 2017, the game runs perfectly smooth in dock mode, stable with no noticeable drops in fps.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It took me a while to get into Breath of the Wild the way I had gotten into previous Legend of Zelda titles. However, Tears of the Kingdom really gripped me. I loved way it brought back some classic monsters and added new ones. I loved the return of Ganondorf. The little connections to classic Zelda lore sprinkled into this new formula. I loved the little Easter eggs for shippers, the way it eschews the timeline while honoring the series, the new abilities, the ways it encourages the cheesing rampant in BotW, the new puzzles, pretty much everything. Seeing this fandom more alive than ever is a great joy. The story made me so emotional, and the ending was triumphant, but I'm still coming back for hours long sessions. I adore this game, and I'm so excited to see how Zelda will continue to evolve. Expand

Also, the rapid breaking of weapons forces the player to avoid fights, which themselves are useless since they drop no interesting loot. The map is huge, but empty, both in the air, in the dungeons and the base, which means a large amount of time spent waiting to start a mission. Fighting enemies can be frustrating, taking time to figure out what's actually going on, without there being a way to switch objectives between enemies. Also, enemies can kill the player with one shot and there is no level gauge, increasing the difficulty level. In summary, the 10/10 rating is excessive compared to the boredom that characterizes the game. Expand

The story is very bland, and while the few dungeon areas and bosses are much better than BOTW, they are a tiny part of the game, and trivial to solve//beat.

Building things is fun for a few minutes, then you realize you have to remake them whenever you go anywhere like inside of a shrine, and it is way faster to run or glide. The battery power makes any machines essentially useless for anything other than novelty, if you want to actually use a contraption you need to spend a LOT of time grinding to upgrade your batteries, you will not get a reasonable amount of power just by playing or progressing through the story.

Overall this game is like a BOTW + mod, it adds some things, and some of them are interesting, the gameplay is still the same and pretty solid, but it feels like the same game all over again. The rewards are things you already had in the last game, only a few people remember you, and nothing is nearly as exciting to explore as you have already been there in BOTW.

This game is not bad, it is fun and enjoyable to play, however it is extraordinarily disappointing if you have played through Breath of the Wild.

Blunt should you buy TOTK questionnaire (130 hours experience):

Do you like a sandbox style game?

Good. But bear in mind that it also introduces very linear puzzles. I tried to pace myself to mix things up, but that wasn’t really possible. It’s all too clear that the game put most of its effort into exploration, Ultrahand, and Fuse.

Used to how epic Zelda is? TOTK stands out as the most *unepic* Zelda. TOTK has a great start and it has flashes within the memories, but that makes up less than an hour of your playtime. Cutscenes repeat themselves. There’s no plot twists. What’s weird about this game is how many characters are reused, but most of them don’t recognize Link.

Do you like games that reuse assets but increase their in-game grind?

Get less with more! It’s harder to earn rupees AND buying/upgrading armor costs more. It has identical mechanics to making money as BOTW. This grind is what makes TOTK feel less like an RPG. I guess it’s the whole blood moon concept. You farm the same enemies for drops. TOTK focuses on the “finding” and “collecting” aspect more than the “action” and the “puzzles” of old school Zelda. It’s critical that you are excited about a slow and steady game. I’ll repeat, it’s clear that most of the effort of the game went into 1. Exploration. 2. Ultrahand. And 3. Fuse. The combat in this game is easier than BOTW, especially if you stick to the main story.

Fans of Ultrahand build some machines you can look up that look cool. If you like that kind of thing, then this game is worth considering.

    Does long=good?

You could realistically beat BOTW in 19 hours. 30 hours if you’re brand new to the game. Notice the reviews, regardless of rating, “30 game hours in and I’ve beaten one dungeon.” That *could* mean people are enjoying the MMORPG aspect of the game or it *could* mean this game takes longer than it should. I think it’s both.

The quest tracker is limited. The puzzles are designed with one solution in mind and can take well over 30 minutes. There are ways to get around how linear Ultrahand is, but those ways make you feel like you’re cheating, which isn’t fun either.

Do you like the rain hazard?

It rains every day AND night unless the area is weather locked otherwise. An honorable mention goes to all the weather patterns of the surface world, rain included, that now severely obscure your vision in an exploration game. Gloom doesn’t scare me, the weather does.

Do you not mind when weapons look weird?

    Do you like limited runes?

There are less runes to use during combat. If you want a varied experience with combat, you need to use Fuse. If you’re like me though, I just found one or two items that I liked and stuck with those. Notice how I haven’t brought up the dungeons: they were weak because of a lack of runes, story, and difficulty.

Do you like finding the exact spot to be in a large game?

The environment at times discourages climbing. Too often, the player tells Link to Ascend, and should be able to, but the game has not programmed it. If you fail, you have to wait a bit before you can do anything else. It is after you realize you’ve wasted your time that you realize that there was actually the third option; flying. There is very little to listen to—all the hours you spend climbing, exploring, and floating are done with music not worth listening to.

Do you like waiting six years between games?

TOTK took long enough to where it is in a position to do what BOTW did: cash in twice on next gen pricing. A lot of hard work went into TOTK. A lot of Zelda fans had strong opinions about what *didn’t* work in BOTW and it’s like the developers ignored them and pushed those areas even further. Of course it took a long time to create a polished sandbox game with vehicles and MMORPG quests. It’s a finished product that works, and will work even better after you buy the game a second time on new hardware.

    My opinion?

Everything about this game felt inflated to me. It’s not a game you return to after beating it. I’m not big on the physics engine, and other than vehicles and light, TOTK’s design the SAME as BOTW! TOTK is a step down in just about every regard when compared to BOTW (don’t ask me how a game can improve its formula yet be a worse game).

If you can look past the issues I mentioned, you’ll love the open world. TOTK didn’t pass the fun test for me. Several critics I’ve seen that deliver glowing reviews say they felt finished with the game at the 80 hour mark, when there’s clearly more than 200 hours of content. It’s shocking to me how critics have minimized some gaping flaws. Unepic? Unsatisfying puzzles? Long? Limited progression? An almost nonexistent story? Less rewarding? Less difficult enemies? Those are some glaring issues.

The map has been expanded on massively providing beautiful scenery up in the sky islands while providing a sense of mystery and exploration in the hostile world of the depths.
While this game is a masterpiece in its own right, I feel it struggles with its place in the Legend of Zelda franchise. I say this because (due to a specific storyline) there is so much retconning in the game that it becomes almost jarring. Not only that but I felt that the Ganon fight was poorly set up with the teasing of a showdown only to make you run around solving dull puzzles before you can reach him again.

One of ToTK's biggest flaws in my opinion is that, while sharing almost the same surface map with BoTW, ToTK had a lot less boots in the ground moments. There were no real challenges in terrain or combat, any issue could just be solved with a rocket or hoverbike and that personally removed any of the moment-to-moment fun for me.

While I understand that many players enjoyed ToTK, I found many sections of the game far too tedious and dull. The dungeons were far too formulaic and drawn out. I found myself so frustrated with the mundanity of so many of these dungeons that I just cheesed the game with rockets and recall just so I could get it over with.

The puzzles that you can complete can be solved in many ways and if you solve it your way, it feels way more satisfying. The abilities such as Ultrahand, Fuse, Ascend ect. are super fun to play with. Wether you make a unique vehicle with Ultrahand, Fuse some powerful and cool looking weapons and shields or Acsend to new heights, I know even newcomers to the Legend of Zelda games will enjoy this game and get immediately hooked. I’ve got pretty much no problems with this game because of how much time Nintendo put into this game. It seems so weird that Nintendo only announced this game in 2019 and 4 years to make a sequel to game that changed the world of Open World games forever and make it such a banger. The story is really amazing as well! You start at the beginning only with a few things to work with, Ganondorf is set free to Hyrule to destroy it and cast it to eternal night and Zelda is transported to the past where she sees the founders and first King and Queen of Hyrule, King Rauru and Queen Sonia. As you traverse through the story you find geoglyphs that give you memories to make the plot of ToTK and more clear and more information about the past in King Rauru and Queen Sonia’s time. Did I even mention the final trailer they gave us?! It felt so amazing to watch. I was at the premiere on YouTube waiting desperately to see the final trailer and the wait was so worth it. The final trailer was pretty much the chef’s kiss to the game before it was out for purchase. So I continue playing this game giving it a solid 10/10 and hope for it to win so many rewards and hopefully Game Of The Year. Expand

That's why breakable weapons were introduced, and you can not find any rupees, you have to go in the caves to mine rocks, but all caves are nearly the same.
When you can go everywhere from the beginning, all sense of progression is lost and the game becomes meaningless.

The negatives: The open world is too large, it wastes players time. Nintendo should have concentrated on content instead of an excessive open world.
The game has not much content, when we take away the open world and the minigames (shrines), the only 4 very small dungeons main quest is pretty lackluster and leaves much to be desired.
When playing Tears of the Kingdom you get the impression that creating clever dungeons that are based on a rewarding progression system and a good combat system were to hard for the japanese developers, therefore they had to replace it with shallow repetitive content which can be seen by the shrines, many of which the developers not even cared enough about to include any minigame, and the 900 korok seeds, which only add to the repetitive uninspiring gameplay.
The game has it's moments like the gleeok design which looks awesome, but at the same time the developers went out of their way to add fog and bad weather to the game so the players can not enjoy the little bit of good graphics the game would otherwise have to offer on the already weak switch hardware.

Overall Tears of the Kingdom is not a good Zelda game, it's not even a good game as with only 4 mini dungeons it lacks unique story content, which was compensated in the worst possible way by going with endless repetitive minigame shrines, korok collections and an too big map with nothing unique to do, according to the motto: quantity over quality.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Quest text that is unskippable, and quests that force 4 time repetition is plentiful. They leaned into Navi type quest text that you cannot just speed through, everytime you turn in one of so many objectives a voice pops up unckippable that say 3 more. Who designed this. What happened to the guy that did BoTW, why did they fire him to force this game to a stop constantly. They took what made BoTW great and tore it out to replace it with a gimmicky physics model or tack on boulders to weapons. Instead of just adding it, they made it the core of game-play. It is fun for the first 10 hours, but puzzles are just repetition after that and even with auto build becomes boring and wastes time.

The physics and weapon additions could have been cool if they were not made to be core gameplay elements because everything great in BoTW had to be gutted to make way for these systems. It is also overused to such a degree that you see nothing but repeated puzzles constantly and it gets tiring to use auto build even half way through the game.

Lack of bombs and freeze powers is puzzling and having useless minions that get in the way constantly only to accidently use abilities because the UI is just trash tier design. AT least make companions optional because they offer nothing except a few useless attacks for people that want them. The arrow menu is a great example how bad the UI is, you have 5-6 useful addons, and a few can use here and there, but they add all items to the arrow addon list (scrolling through a hundred or more items when most are garbage is trash design) and you have to add them everytime you shoot an arrow. Weapons went from usable in BoTW to absolute garbage in this game because they tacked on a gimmick, so they had to make almost all weapons trash to force you to use the gimmick tack on boulder. Because you can tack on boulders rocks that used to take one bomb or bomb arrow now take 10 or 6 minion roll uses. Weapons still break because bad design to include the master sword.

BoTW didn't have enough story, no problem they said. They will tell you the same story 6 times over. When you do the sage quests, they repeat for every four after that, 3 videos back to back identical in most ways that you have to skip separately. They repeat telling the exact same plot lines over and over and over to DEATH! They story is better than BoTW overall, but ruined by repetition and the way it was told. You also have the writer ruining an overall great story at the very end with an M Night tier twist which just shows trash writing.

MINOR SPOILER The writer doesn't understand what a sacrifice means so they just undo it all in the end. Just trash tier writing that brings the entire story down. MINOR SPOILER

The game has a better story than BoTW, but told so horrifically and forced stops constantly that it becomes an annoying experience just to try to play through it. The gimmicks added only forced the developers to trash all of the old useful abilities only really keeping the grab, gutting ice platforms, stop time and bombs for no reason. They also repeat a lot of content for the physics based stuff and it got old fast.

The game is good, but to call it a masterpiece ignores that it improves nothing in any meaningful way over BoTW and in most respects delivers a worse experience (Story repetition, UI, companions that should have been optionally auto use like BoTW, buggy physics got old fast). I think a lot of this had more to do with how amazing BoTW was and the team being stuck between a rock and a hard place, hence the weird shift to physics instead of adding it, making it a core mechanic.

Tears Of The Kingdom is a great story, minus the terrible M Night Twist and is filled with flawed gameplay. Worth a play if you play all Zelda games, but I don't think it is required for all Zelda fans. I don't really know who to recommend it to because if you are into physics based game-play it gets old long before the game ends and doesn't even innovate in physics based puzzles, if anything it just repeats a lot of BoTW ones with new tools.

A good but flawed game that a lot of people are giving undeservingly high marks on.

then there's the NPC's that transform into mega annoying enemies that don't give you much useful stuff. what does that teach me nintendo? it teaches me that I get punished for talking to NPC's, so naturally, I don't feel safe to talk to NPC's any more. genius move.
Oh yes, then there is the GODDAMN GATHCA MACHINE, which has me wasting the resources I collected, just to try and get one of each item, I don't play games for gambling mechanics, this is reprehensible.
The amazing stuff you can make, disappears if you walk too far from it, some of them even disappear midway through using them.
If you want to ride a horse to travel faster, you can't use fast travel because the horse can't fast travel, except that is, if you go to a stable, where it can then be teleported from one stable to another... there is no logic to this.
I go to trouble of exploring, to see if I find something interesting, and what's my reward? another bloody shrine, where i can solve a puzzle to get a light orb, to go to a statue, to choose either heart or stamina.... another convulted bit of BUSYWORK, rather than actually finding tangible things in the world like heart pieces.

Definitely must play for everyone who love exploration games! Stunning achievement to run such gorgeous game on switch.

    - At first, I thought that this game would be just a DLC for BOTW, but I was so wrong. A lot of things have been changed and added. Yes, it is very similar to BOTW, but as a sequel, it's much more polished and way better. In my opinion, anyone playing Zelda on PC, on

Yes, it is very similar to BOTW, but as a sequel, it's much more polished and way better. In my opinion, anyone playing Zelda on PC, on an emulator, will never understand how amazing this game is and How hard could it be for developers to make such a game on Switch run as well as it is running! Alright, there are some drops, but we must remember that this is a really incredible achievement to make such a big and detailed open world game for that weak console.

    - In times when every game is treating players like idiots, Zelda is showing everyone how to treat players with respect and how to give them amazing tools to just do whatever they want in a created environment without fear that someone will be lost. By creating so many amazing places, items, and combinations of crafting, it's easy to never see it all and it's an amazing feeling to find something new online!

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
