Over 100 hours in and yet I still have so much to do. It’s the game that just keeps giving. It's so much easier to see something off in the distance and say, “I want to go do that”, and it’s so easy to get there by building any vehicle you can imagine to transport you. The game just feels so advanced from any other game and is amazing in every category. Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild are both 10/10 games, but Tears of the Kingdom just breaks the scale. It would be a shame for any gamer to miss out on this experience. I’ve never done a metacritic review and created an account for this to be my first one. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game did not live up to the hype.
    Some disappointments:
    - A lot of recycled game mechanics from botw. It feels more like a DLC than a whole new game.
    - The introduction is too long, linear and tedious. This ruins replay-ability.
    - The construction-type game mechanic feels a lot like actual work, with a poor interface. If you do 3D modeling as a day-time job, playing this game is not relaxing nor entertaining. Much rather get back to work. It feels very off in a Zelda game.
    - The game is nearly unplayable for people with limited spatial awareness.
    - Storyline doesn't provoke progression.
    - Deviating from the storyline is unrewarding.
    - The vast spectrum of weapons and abilities makes for an overcomplicated play-style.
    - Seems to target a very young audience.

In 190 hours of game play I never felt bored and it's rare in these times of AAA games crammed with fetch quests that get repetitive after 1 hour. It has it's problems on a technical side but nothing game breaking; it's a miracle that this gem can run on such dated hardware. Game devs should take note of the passion and care that has been put into TOTK. Kudos Nintendo, you did it again.

Better story than BOTW, more creative, however the game feels the same as before, the world, the enemies, the gameplay except for ultrahand and the difference approaches to solve the shrines.
    Good game overall, deserves 8.5/10.
If it had a long chain of main quests like 30 -40 hrs that would be perfect and will be a drastic change from BoTW, I prefer the old Zelda games to be honest.

I cant understand how people claim that the map is basically the same, since the map is at least 2x the size of breath of the wild (i guess people just dont play past 5 hours of gameplay). Even the old locations have changed enough, so that they feel just as fresh to explore as in breath of the wild.
The new abilities, allowing you to fuse weapons together and create wild contraptions, are absolutely amazing. Youll spend douzens of hours just building weird vehicles, from simple cars to bomber aircrafts. Fusing materials to weapons also fixes the durability issues of botw and greatly rewards fighting monster camps.
Shrines have returnted, though they are much more fun and more challenging than in the prequel. The divine beasts have been replaced by bigger, better and way more fun dungeons including actuall bosses instead of just mini ganons.
In my 100+ hours of playtime ive not once experienced a bug and glitch. sadly the game isnt as stable in the framerate: The already low 30fps drop decently frequently, though its not as bad as some people will make it seem. Besides, it is a miracle the genius devs managed to make the game run on the switch in the first place.
dont let the (relatively) low user score fool you, a lot of the 5/10 reviews describe the game as 10/10
(i guess they thought it was 5/5).
For any switch users it is a must buy, for those who loved botw it will likely be the best game of all time. It took me over 60 hours to beat the game and 100% is looking like far over 300 hours.

The TLDR for this review is simply this: the more I play Tears of the Kingdom, the less I enjoy it.

Truth be told, my experience with TotK has been hugely disappointing. While every aspect is technically proficient, it seems that very little has been considered regarding the Zelda series' history; from criticisms that ran near universal in Breath of the Wild, to the sky feeling just as empty as Skyward Sword's, to quests that amount to nothing more than going back and forth over and over. There are even new issues such as the world not being designed for the layout of important landmarks, or the new abilities having a surprisingly high skill floor, making the accessibility that was available in previous titles less applicable here. It's not like any one thing breaks the game in its entirety, but a slew of gradual issues slowly wears away at what would be an otherwise excellent experience.

Contrasting the above list of issues I have with this game, I do feel some improvements have been made, specifically over BotW, that make some areas of the adventure feel more fulfilling. Enemy variety has been increased, making for more interesting encounters. Dungeons and bosses have been changed up, resembling the aesthetics, and in some ways the mechanics, of classic Zelda titles. A new area known as The Depths is perhaps my favourite addition to this game, a terrifying world of darkness and danger that, in my opinion, far surpasses anything the overworld or sky can offer. Despite the amount of time I have spent being bored or uninterested in something in this game, I have found some stuff of worth.

Never did I want to give a new Zelda game a score as low as this. Previously, I had given this game an 8/10, but that was before I put another 30 hours into it. That was before I found dungeons and quests that I simply abhorred. That was before I experienced more of what the game had to offer. Sufficed to say, Tears of the Kingdom is a good game, but when I am done, I feel I will simply return to other Zelda games, such as Breath of the Wild or Majora's Mask, and never consider picking up TotK again.

General game loop is okay, heavily resembles BotW. A bit more content should be expected from a game company as massive as Nintendo in my opinion, especially if it's supposed to be a new experience. It did not feel like a new experience from BotW, and definitely did not feel like 6 years of game development went into it.

It did not feel like a new experience from BotW, and definitely did not feel like 6 years of game development went into it.
There's hardly any new art in the game. It's mostly reusing old assets from the previous game in all aspects - from the environment to enemies. Most people are sold on the game being expanded upon greatly by the sky islands and the depths. A lot of these places use just a handful of modular assets, there is no true crafting of these structures by an artist. At this point they could've laid off the art team and would have delivered the same experience just about. I'm personally a game developer, and I can sniff out corner cutting a mile away. People say that the depths doubled the game's size. That's true in the literal sense, however I'm willing to bet money that this was generated off of an inverted height map from the hyrule surface, which takes zero time to do. Then was populated by the same few foliage assets, and a select few locations in there were hand-picked for some TLC in an attempt to try to make it seem like somebody cared for creating it. Generating an environment and foliage does not take too long, but the standard player probably won't notice and will still be impressed by the 'doubled-sized' game.

    Abilities:
Ultrahand: This was fun, overall I enjoyed the freedom to create things to help move around or attack enemies. It's the one thing that held the game's score up for me.
Ascend: This was convenient, but overall did not add any ground-breaking aspects to the game to really change how the game felt compared to BotW.
Recall: Objects did the thing they just did, but in reverse. Not necessarily something that sets this game above anything else.
Fuse: I find it lackluster. I see no difference in combat really compared to BotW. I still whack enemies to death, or whack boulders that are in my way with other boulders (on a stick). And when it comes to fuse+arrows, it's neat that items in your inventory have more of a use, however it's inconvenient to sift through all your items for the same 3 or 4 items you'll use. Even if you sort it, it doesn't make combat truly feel any different.
Autobuild: Good for my air bike, glad I didn't have to recraft it over and over again manually.

    Performance:
I'll give credit where it's due, mostly consistent 30 fps on a switch with a lot of these systems working is impressive, however come on Nintendo, we need a new device that's not stuck in the past. It's good that after creating BotW and forking off somewhere into development and overhauling for TotK, it managed to stay optimized for the most part. From what I saw BOTW started serious development back in 2013, so after 10 years total on a project (TotK IS forked from BotW and nobody can convince me otherwise), there was plenty of time to allocate to these optimizations. I just wish more time was spent in other areas though to make it feel like a new game.

    Story:
I won't spoil anything, but honestly not much would be spoiled. It's a Nintendo game. They're more known for solving puzzles versus creating a truly compelling story. I'm finished with my playthru of the game and I did a lot of side-quests, I'm convinced that I'll forget most of it by the end of next month, it's nothing to rave about.

    In the end:
General gameplay loop is alright, more or less the same as BotW which isn't bad necessarily. After playing through the predecessor and coming to this, I feel like it was not worth $70 though. It was the same game packaged again and everybody ate it up because it was hailed as the next Zelda game. If I didn't play BotW and if I didn't have my game developer background maybe I would have enjoyed this more. I can just see all the corners that were cut during gameplay, and it feels insulting to be a consumer of this. Not worth $70, not indicative of 6 years of work, 4/10. Congratulations, you implemented 1 cool feature with ultrahand and things are slightly more optimized.
I'm not going to just give a pass for huge companies that choose to cheat out the consumer.

Nintendo have created something amazing here that elevates botw to a new epic level. You learn the mechanics then it all just comes together as you need it. Just fantastic.

Just think how this game would look and play on current gen consoles? Yes, it is a challenge to squeeze a huge magnificent game into smaller portable hardware. So don't. Use the technology that's out there rather than forcing it through a weak console. Not only does it let you do whatever you want, whenever you want, and however you want, but it also expands on that with the new abilities.

While it is true that the game runs only at 30 fps and sometimes drops to 18-19 fps, it's actually not THAT bad considering the fact that Breath of the Wild also ran at 30 fps (of course, it would've been nice to see it run at 60, but unfortunately, that is not possible on the Nintendo Switch).

Finally, a performance tip: Consider buying the game from the Nintendo eShop as the integrated storage offers superior read/write speeds compared to physical cartridges. If you don't have enough space on your Switch, consider getting a UHS-I SD card.

A few cool new powers, but it doesn't really change that much, as it's still pretty much the same gameplay loop as botw.

and that's it, for the rest, pretty much the same problems as the first, which is a shame.

There aren't that many interesting moments, except in the last third.
The horse is as useless as ever.
The subterranean terrain is neither done nor done; it's horrible to walk through.
The shrines are too easy and all look the same in terms of arts direction
The dungeons, or rather temples, are a sad sight.
Too much length and blah-blah to lengthen the lifespan unnecessarily.
    Super boring loot.
More than half of the fedex side quests are pretty lame.
They didn't bother too much with the story, but it's still very childish.
Adventure less epic than previous Zelda games.
    Disastrous ergonomics.
Too close to BOTW, same map, same armor, same music, same interface, same cardboard weapons, in short, still as boring as ever ... too much recycling.

    Unfortunately it's a BOTW 1.5

Sorry to me it's not worth a 95 metacritic.

The game's story and objective feel very disconnected from the vast amount of new content.

The game's story and objective feel very disconnected from the vast amount of new content.

Playing older Zelda games, I had the felling that every new unlocked item would open new puzzle opportunities for relevant content or some side quest that would give me a relevant item.

The ultrahand power is a very cool feature, but its nature of allowing you to build almost anything in anyway means that the puzzles can't have hard, well thought, specific solutions. You are open to solve it your own way, and so the puzzles to go from point A to point B end up being ridiculous easy (and sometimes not even needing the ultrahand power). Solving challenges with relevant items like the hookshot, iron boots, zora's armor is what was fun in Zelda and enabled the opportunity to have well designed puzzles, dungeons and items.

The fuse power is a step in the right direction, but hasn't been used to its full potential. Allowing new utilities to your items based on what you hunt or find is really cool and I used a lot. There are many fusions with a really cool effect to explore. In relation to weapons I still prefer just using an unbreakable master sword than having other 10 breakable items, but giving them the right fusion can help in many different and smart ways.

The enormous amount of content and collectibles doesn't help either. It's really annoying to keep changing outfits just to climb or swim or glide. Also selecting items for fuse operations is a pain. I know some people like the appearance customization, but the old green tunic with upgrades along the game is what I would go for. Continuously pausing your game to find X outfit or Y item to fuse breaks the game flow and fun.

The chasm gets repetitive really fast. Running in the dark to find light to explore what you have just passed in a map the same size as Hyrule is not fun at all. It's also filled with nostalgic items that looks like a hard try to catch old Zelda fans emotions and ride the past games successes.

In OoT we had child link, adult link, the ocarina... in MM we had unique mask powers... in WW we had the boat... In TP, twilight helm and wolf link... BoTW we had open world exploration and survivorship... I just feel that TotK doesn't have something memorable... maybe Zonai devices and the ultrahand system?

My final feeling is that the quantity of content has increased and the quality of the content has decreased. It's a good game, one of the best main story line in all the Zelda games and an improvement from BoTW. But everything else just feels disconnected, the feeling of progression when you make a new discovery or solve a new puzzle is replaced by grinding useless collectables and rushing through easy puzzles. After 6 years of waiting, I wouldn't recommend at current price.

I would give it a 6, but there are so many 10s that I feel I need to balance.

While I had great confidence in Nintendo, I couldn't help but worry about "Tears of the Kingdom" before actually playing it. The visuals, environments, and settings in the trailers made me concerned that it might just be a rehash of the original game, playing it safe and lacking innovation.

As I entered the game, a familiar feeling washed over me, and my worries reached their peak. I even started to think that it might be nothing more than a large DLC with some item synthesis and crafting mechanics.

However, it wasn't until I immersed myself in the game for a couple of hours that I realized the true depth of its gameplay. I thought I understood the Ultrahand, Recall, and Ascend, but I was repeatedly amazed by the possibilities of its amazing diverse combinations. From diving from the floating island into the dark underworld and riding a Autobuilded flying motorcycle to illuminate the underground world, I finally understood.

"Tears of the Kingdom" is not just a DLC for "Breath of the Wild"; rather, "Breath of the Wild" was a gorgeous crafted prologue to "Tears of the Kingdom."

Once again, I immerse in the Nintendo Style Shock. Not only in its meticulously designed new gameplay, story, maps, and puzzles but also in its ability to show me that adding new gameplay "Elements" is always limited. However, by creating new "Dimensions" of gameplay and allowing old and new elements to multiply and expand boundaries in different "Dimensions", a game can truly approach infinity.

The side quests are interesting and a large step up from Breath of the Wild. Overall a very fun game.

A pretty solid game compared to what the industry standard has become but is let down mostly by the switch itself and a few design issues.

I was honestly getting lost in the world as I jumped from tower to tower and island to island before I plunged into the terrifying depths, immersing myself in this world as I tried to explore areas I was unprepared for. It's honestly a rush to poke

I was honestly getting lost in the world as I jumped from tower to tower and island to island before I plunged into the terrifying depths, immersing myself in this world as I tried to explore areas I was unprepared for. It's honestly a rush to poke your head over the horizon and see what's around the corner, that is until you have to start engaging yourself with the other systems and mechanics of the game.

The controls are clunky and annoying to navigate with nintendo's insistence that it does it's own thing while the rest of the industry has tried to make things more universal for everyone. The weapon mechanic while novel and fun at the beginning becomes more and more tedious as you try to juggle the variety of different enemies in the world without wasting rare resources on low leveled enemies or finding you don't have enough high leveled weapons to fight an unexpectedly high leveled enemy.

The world is boring to explore once you've seen it all, for the most part the world looks no better than pokemon scarlet and violet apart from the few assets where the designers put all their time into like the floating islands, towns and ruins. Everywhere else looks as dated as the old ghost recon game from the early 2000's.

My main gripe with the game is the annoying amount of back tracking, fast travel, loading screens, and horse riding. It wouldn't be so bad if the world was interesting and fun to look at and explore but the PS2 graphics often leave me wanting to put my switch down as I try to motivate myself to go collect enough, arrows, weapons and monster parts so I can take on a high leveled enemies. The fact weapons break and you can make new ones isn't a bad idea, but it's poorly executed in Zelda as your limited by what you can make at any one time.

I wonder if the irony is lost of the developers that they encourage you to collect as many consumable items as possible in your bottomless inventory, but your weapons slots are limited even though the game treats them like a consumable item. It's not fun stopping half way through a fight and having to craft up new weapons because I'm running out of them. Either increase the weapon durability, or give us unlimited weapon slots so we can actually treat our weapons like consumable items.

Combat is serviceable, the enemy variety is low so you'll end up versing the same enemies again and again like some cheap MMO, the dodge backflip feels inconsistent to use it'll work one moment and in the next exact same scenario it turns into a side step. Also tough enemies are annoying to verse because of the numerous sub menus you have to navigate during the battle, controls and weapon durability will distract you from the fight.

This game is Botw, but ten times better. The map is more than twice as large as the one in Botw, and the new mechanics never get old. Definitely worth the 70 dollars.

    Pros:
    - Confusing but intriguing story that expands and diversifies the story from BOTW
    - Building system isn’t janky, and is fun to mess around with from start to finish - Sky islands an amazing addition that are great to explore and solve puzzles on - Combat flow is much “smoother” than BOTW - Fusing items to arrows is the best idea since sliced bread - Attention to small details is

    - Sky islands an amazing addition that are great to explore and solve puzzles on - Combat flow is much “smoother” than BOTW
    - Fusing items to arrows is the best idea since sliced bread - Attention to small details is incredible
    - 200+ quests for the 250 or so quests in the game are actually fun.
    - Game is harder, but not less fun because of it Cons:
    - The Depths are a barren, boring, and lazy attempt from Nintendo to add a “New map”
    - The original world map is literally the same, with the only changes being weather patterns and caves - The sheer amount of glitches acted as a difficulty slider for players with how game breaking so many of them were
    - The graphics are unchanged
    - On older gen switches, the game runs as smooth as sandpaper - Drearful, cringeworthy voice acting and repeated dialogue from so many characters that have no correlation - All enemies from BOTW are basically the same and how the exact same attack patterns
    - Almost all new enemies have the same attack patterns as BOTW enemies - Shrines range from fun to stupidly boring the cheeseable to near impossible.
Shrine rewards at all non-multi stage quest based shrines are laughably bad (with the exception of a few shields and a few expensive items”
    - tutorial takes a minimum of 3-5 hours depending on how long it takes you to find out mechanics that they never explain - Explaining mechanics without actually explaining them (ex: You can un-fuse weapons, said but never told how to)
    - Mouth movement isn’t matched up to voices - Ridiculously difficult upgrade process for armor which requires multiple quests to be active at once, and has a 5+ hour major quest involved just so you can unlock the ability to upgrade - 70, dollars - Amibos are basically useless
    Extra note:
    - If you haven’t already, buy the game, cuase it’s not dropping price anytime soon. It’s a fun time and has so much going for it, but know that there are also a lot of problems, and that the 100/100 reviews are what I like a call a load of hoopla -

There's a few annoying design choices, but overall, this is a Top 5 Zelda game easily. Ocarina of Time is still the best.

Even greater gameplay than Breath of the Wild with constructive function. And the story is a big advance.

The greatest ending of any zelda game by a mile. It is literally breath of the wild but better in every way

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
