basically like playing BotW with mods.
it's fine, but not as good as the hype makes it out to be.
it's a kids' game. if you're older than 8, it'll annoy you constantly with how much it explains everything and how each character repeats dialogue even within the same conversation. it makes finding things too easy, imo, with stuff like the sensor that tells you where nearby shrines or other

it's a kids' game. if you're older than 8, it'll annoy you constantly with how much it explains everything and how each character repeats dialogue even within the same conversation. it makes finding things too easy, imo, with stuff like the sensor that tells you where nearby shrines or other things are (more clearly than it did in BotW). the characters are typical one-note Nintendo characters and the story is very simplistic and is stuffed to the brim with Nintendo's classic conservative authoritarian propaganda - "defend the monarchy, praise the gods, restore the status quo. hierarchy is good. just have faith and play your part, and you'll be rewarded." - i'm annoyed by how much it constantly feels like an after school special trying to teach kids the virtues of eating vegetables, obeying adults, and doing chores. etc. and the constant puns are excruciating. everything related to writing (story, messages, characters, dialogue) sucks. there's some frustrating controls, especially on horseback, and related to building things. and the game doesn't do anything new. it's BotW again.

but, if you enjoyed the first one, this is more of it. the mechanics can be fun, there's lots to explore, and it's very pretty.

    Brilliant!

In the opening segments of this game, after dropping from the Great Sky Islands back to the familiarity of the vast green fields of Hyrule, I was hit with an unsettling feeling that ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ may not be unique enough to stand apart as its own unique experience from ‘Breath of the Wild’, and that much of this game may feel like retreading trodden ground.

Fortunately however, as the game progressed it unveiled more and more of its secrets and sheer abundance of content, winning me over more and more with how much it develops and builds upon every single aspect of ‘Breath of the Wild’ to a staggering degree. My issues regarding its similarities to ‘Breath of the Wild’ quickly faded away, and in it’s wake I was left with a magical wonder and so many discoveries that I was wondering how the game could possibly just keep going.

Wash away any reservations you have for ‘Tears of the Kingdom’, because this game delivers on every aspect you could hope for, once again delivering an all time great to a series that is chock full of them and another potential “Game of the decade” contender.

    10/10, wow.

I really like what they have done with the game and this is no DLC to Breath of the wild, Breath of the wild was the demo for Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo really has outdone them selves with this game.

Most useful glitches from BOTW are patched in TOTK, but it still has a few glitches inside. Overall this game is one of the GOATs

Sooo in general aspects i feel the game is waaaaaay too lazy. Story is lazy, same gameplay, poor level design, the "dungeon" enemies are the laziest thing I've ever seen...
Am just gonna do a very general review cause i don't wanna go into details and make this too long.

Story wise...this game does something reeeeeally well...having no tension. The story telling feel super plain, empty and forced, i also don't even want to mention the music for this game which is amazingly poor. Really nothing matters in the story, nothing is lost, nothing is really a big deal in the end so basically the heroes are pointless and dumb.

Gameplay wise this is basically an overpriced BOTW DLC. 90% of the game feels the same with a few added zones. The padding and gating in this game is unbearable and artificial. Padded by the big world, stamina bar, 80% enemies oneshotting you (need at least 10 hearts for this to not happen) and I can keep going. Also i dont want to mention the companion AI with is unsufferable.

Content is the same as BOTW with more of the same **** to do underground...now you have to light up the place lmao. Same enemies, more shrines, the same 10 weapons...what else can i say.
I heard this game was gonna have temples and bosses more like the old Zelda games but its a complete lie. Temple design is poor AF!! basically they are all the same, they share the same concept of going up and activate **** really braindead. Also the enemy variety inside the temples is an insult to the player. Bosses are lame, they have 2 or 3 attacks that loop. More like an annoyance than fun...which is basically the whole game.
We don't need an infinite amount of shrines, we already had that in BOTW...dont wanna do 200 more of them
The stamina bar is stupid AF, they should have applied the Elden Ring formula which was having no stamina limit out of combat, maybe just leave it while climbing and gliding.

Also the building mechanic just basically works withing nintendo parameter and thats the only thing you need to beat the game. Its really meaningless in the end...Same...more and annoyance than fun

Maaaaan...I could keep going which is the sad part of this. I bet BOTW was going to have TOTK as DLC but the head of the company pushed the devs to create a whole game out of it. 6 years for this is not worth at all.

But BotW and Tears of the Kingdom are in a league of their own in terms of terrible story/characters.

Edited: I raised the score to 5 because, even though I still wouldn't change my negative comments, some puzzle concepts are relatively fun and improved from BotW. It also simply has more to do and discover.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I legitimately can not understand people reviewing this game. Most as far as I can tell are in two camps "It's not a Zelda game therefore it's bad" (which would normally be fine but they base there reviews as if they're ranking against other zelda games), and two "It reuses too much of the previous game". I have played this game for at least 50 hours now and I have completed maaaaybe a third of this games available content, and I've completed about half of the main story, not once did I ever feel like "Man, I've seen these land formations before" or "I've done this before". It just doesn't happen. The sky islands, the depths, the very way you traverse the world is completely different.

Some people dislike the building aspects, it's a fairly minor role outside of shrine puzzles, which is when the building aspects shine the best as creative problem solving. I can understand not liking it, but the game doesn't require you to interact with it pretty much 99% of the time outside of it. You can explore exactly how you did in breath of the wild. Climb up a cliff, paraglide off a cliff, swim up a river, ride your horse. However for those who want to do DOPE **** you can build hoverbikes and cars and boats and death machines and it's very fun to tie a rocket to a korok and launch it to where it needs to go.

Durability is back, and while I liked it in breath of the wild, it's kinda a non issue in tears of the kingdom. Yes weapons break, but you get so many monster parts for a single weapon that it feels like you always have powerful weapons ready to go, which helps encourage you to actually fight monsters rather than just avoid it to prevent weapon damage. The game gives multiple fuse parts which helps you decide what resources you're willing to spend, so if enemies are clumped together, using a bomb flower on an arrow to finish the fight faster is something you'll consider very naturally.

The dungeons still aren't dungeony enough for me, they still behave more simmilar to divine beasts. However, this does not mean the temples aren't fun, they're still designed to take advantage of breath of the wilds unique freedom of movement. The story is also way better than breath of the wild it constantly has you asking questions and it's a genuine joy to receive memories to unlock a little bit more of what exactly happened.

Peak around the corner there's a falling rock to take you to a sky island, there's a chasm to jump in, another cave another well another pack of mobs another camp here's a stable with a quest go talk to some people. Litterally side tracked the game there's so much to do and explore it just teeters on the brink of being overwhelming.

Brilliant - the building mechanics are fun and the additional ways to explore the world underground and in the sky bring innovation in this Zelda game. So much replay value for these reasons, as well as containing classic dungeons and quests.

the sky may be a bit scarce it works and the main challenge is getting to some of the islands.
people saying content isnt added are just wrong, ultra hand and ascend completely change the way you play, in breath if u wanted to climb a mountain u would spend 10 mins whistle running, in this game if u take the time to find a cave you can get some useful loot and get to the top of the mountain. the depths are the size of the overworld map and is very rewarding to explore.
overall, if u rush and do the objectives and treat it like any rpg this game isnt as fun as if u were to treat it as an open world. be brave and fight the bosses and jump into the depths. amazing game.

I'm sorry, but I believe I speak for A LOT of Zelda fans when I say that the classic formula worked for a reason. The sense of dungeon-crawling and using items to solve puzzles is just not present in BotW or TotK. To make matters worse, the sandboxes of BotW and TotK are VERY MUCH identical. So similar to the point that if you takes out the visuals and story of TotK then it would very much look like a DLC of BotW.

Speaking of the story... it's awful. The base plot is repeated all over the place, the resolution looks like something that was written out of an anime fanfiction, and the voiced dialogue is so cringe that it makes me wish when the characters didn't speak in past titles. VERY frustrating when other Zelda games had much better lore.

Sidequests and their rewards are either meh or pointless altogether. Shrines are even easier than they were in BotW. Combat is still trivial most of the time. Weapons and shields still break way too easily. Dungeons are all "look for four parts of the puzzle to fight the boss". Past abilities and even some past characters are inexplicably missing. These thing combined with many more all come together to make a huge mess of a game.

If you're big into Minecraft or open-world sandbox games in general then you'll like the game well enough. Otherwise old-school Zelda fans (and even some fans of BotW) won't care for this game nearly as much. Bring back the old formula, Nintendo.

Almost decent game, but a very bad and disastrous Zelda (and I'm going to judge it under that criteria), from the Zelda saga it only has the characters and some melodies. It's the same game as botw but with new tricks that further distance the game from the essence of the saga.

    Review from a non-Nintendo fan.

TOTK builds on a great foundation but does not get rid of some issues and does not add much substantial except the obvious building mechanic.

    Animation/Cutscene:
The amount of times I mash buttons to skip animations, cutscenes etc. is ridiculous. If the aim is to make you wear out your controller they have succeeded. Can we please have cutscenes for first few times when opening a chest and after that a much much quicker one unless its a cool item inside? And it's not just chests, its cooking, upgrading clothing etc. Whenever you have to cook 10x of something or upgrade 10x, it's just a button mashing fest.

    QOL:
Very few QOL that we have had since forever in other games. Why can't we sell several items at once? Why can't we move around the shields weapons etc. in the order we want? So much that just feels incredibly dated.

    World Issue:
The vast majority of your gametime will not be spent in the new areas, it will be in the same lands as BOTW.
The new areas are cool at first but very shallow if we examine them closely.

The quests are new but most people in this world don't even know who you are, Zelda is well known but the person that ran around Hyrule for XXX hours killing monsters, helping people, saving the world is apparently a complete stranger.

    Reward Drip:
There is 152 shrines in this game, they are very small puzzles but is a must do since you gain health by them.
There is a 1000 seeds in this game, which are necessary for the various inventory slots.

These things are called "fun exploration" in Zelda, but in all other open world games, gamers hate these "collect XXXX of this" and "XXXX of that". I'm not sure how Zelda gets away with it, I would much rather have 50 Shrines with three times bigger puzzles and 300 seeds to hunt, with three times the hunting.

I get it, "there is an overabundance so all players get a baseline of health/inventory" but that doesn't take away from how simple and boring the shrines often are. Some have more animations/cutscenes than content.
"But it's good how some teach you how the game works!" yeah that's great, too bad they are completely optional, that would make sense if the 1 shrine was the same for everyone, and the 10th etc. that would actually make sense because they would get increasingly complex and it would make sure everyone got to learn combat, physics solutions etc.

So basically you are given a vast world to explore and every time you stumble upon something the reward is a 1/10000 drip.
If you're very very lucky you will stumble upon a unique item but there is never a good clear indication that "hey, what you're doing here is leading towards something cool".

It is almost as Nintendo is expecting you to Google/Youtube "best armor" and "best weapons" instead of having clear quests that give you more than 100 rupees and a meal.

Which I have been doing because I don't want to spend XXX hours looking around for actual cool items/content like an addict.

    Weapons:
We can fuse stuff with stuff! Cool! But why does some items just glue on the tip of my sword and some transform my sword into something actually cool?
Why does a scythe still move like a staff? Or a scimitar still have exact same movement as a Longsword?

I could probably go on but it boils down to not enough unique changes and not a game that does not respect your time.

It is still a very fun game but it is more a reskin than another GOTY.

This is just another souls like game. Dark Souls just going around and making every game unplayable for people like me one series at a time.

Once the game puts you out into the rest of the world it becomes a game of running around aimlessly trying to find the path you can actually progress on, which I never found before getting too bored to care anymore.

It would have been a very good DLC. Unfortunately this is rather a bad standalone game, as it copies so much from the previous saga entry : world, sounds, gameplay.

Graphics are shameful for 2023, as is the (almost) full lack of voices.

The game is definitely a sequel to BotW, and even with the same map (which makes sense) it's been changed enough to work as a new game.
The abilities are completely different and the absolute freedom you have is ridiculously fun. The story is great, better told than BotW imo.
The new weapon fusions add yet another layer to the combat as well as a method to make weapons last much longer.
