This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This has very easily taken its place as my favourite Zelda game. The improvements from Breath of the Wild, and the use of characters and evelopment of them further has got to be one of my favourite things. And the final fight was absolutely incredible. I just wish we could have seen more development of Ganondorf, and seen more of what drove him to want more power. But this has taken the spot from Twilight Princess as my favourite Zelda game. I loved the new mechanics, especially being able to fuse weapons and build structures. It added a layer of complexity that I truly enjoyed. I experienced a few framedrops here and there, but they were barely noticable, and for a game with as complex as this one, i'm truly amazed at how incredibly well it runs Expand

I've been wondering if Nintendo will be able to recreate this feeling of joy and discovery after 6 years, but they delivered flawlessly.

Performance is mostly fine, squeezing the maximum from the old hardware. I'm already excited about BotW and TotK remasters on the upcoming systems.

(I will re-edit this comment when I finish the game I already completed two dungeons the one by gerudo and zora and im on the dungeons of the gorons) I thought the game was very good but the map is very similar to the old game in some parts and in very different ones, for example, gerudo has changed a lot I wasn't recognizing gerudo I got lost knowing where everything is in the last game but the land of lanayaru (zora) is identical to the one in the last game I knew where everything was I didn't get lost once and the dungeon and the boss are very easy i got there and finished it in 1 day but other than that i really liked hudson's quests and items i built an amazing house and i wasted a whole day just decorating haha and i had a lot of fun making koltin's scenery and it inspired me to complete the monsters album but one thing that I didn't really like was the map that with so much movement it was easy to go through it all and I liked the little ghosts of the people who helped you in the dungeons following you around the map better than the powers from the past game Expand

So many game studios are wasting years making a so called high end graphics but their games so often are boring, faulty, stupidly designed, makes no sense and doesn't worth the time and money. Faulty releases of modern games is a mainstream now and most of the games are released in a very bad technical condition, even no point to say about other aspects...

Fortunately at least some game makers still can make a good quality game and it is not only about the graphics but overall. In my opinion "The Tears of The Kingdom" is a great sequel of a great game, the quality of the game is very good and I love attention to details , this is rare thing in modern games.

The rest of the game makers should take Zelda BOTW/TOTK as an example and finally understand that the gameplay is the most important thing in a game, just a cool picture is not enough, it should be interesting to play first of all and a game must work well on release!

To be honest, I don't understand the outrage of people who say that this game has old graphics. Did you expect that Switch will magically get an additional graphics card with the release of the new Zelda?
Considering the size of this game, the developers have done an incredible work to make make it so well.

I agree that not everything is absolutely perfect in this game but I'll put the highest score as some little issues doesn't make any troubles and most likely will be fixed soon.

This game is not a DLC, there is a plenty of a new interesting content, new features and ideas, it is huge and awesome. Don't listen anyone who is moaning that it is a full price DLC, it is not true, If you are the BOTW fan you will love this game!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Amazing game held back solely by the platform it is limited to is the the best way to sum up TOTK. Somehow the developers managed to take what made BOTW so good and expanded upon it even more, pushing an already outdated system beyond what most expected. The new sandbox of things to do with Link's new abilities as well as increased enemy variety makes the game stand out enough from BOTW but still keeping the same identity. Also despite being in the same Hyrule as before enough has changed both with the existing BOTW map to make the world feel fresh. On top of changes to locales 2 entirely new levels of the world have been added that offer new challenges to exploration and act as puzzles of their own to try and solve in order to uncover everything that they offer. Going to the story of the game, even though I have not personally completed the main story what I have seen from the story quests and memories akin system in the game it is a step up from what BOTW did although it won't blow you away. The biggest selling point the game offers is the new abilities and each and every ability massively changes the way you approach the game compared to BOTW. The freedom the game allows for is unprecedented in almost any title not in the sandbox genre and that alone could carry this game even if none of the new big areas were added.

TLDR: Amazing sandbox, lots of freedom in both puzzle solving and world exploration, new areas added on top of changes to the BOTW map, slight story upgrade, held back by hardware. 9/10

So what I’m getting from these “perfect” reviews is that we no longer want Zelda games. We want Skyrim knock-offs with some Minecraft building mixed in. And no, I’m not pulling that out of a hat: the creators of BOTW have admitted they wanted to make a game like Skyrim in the Zelda universe.

Look, it’s fun at times, but why play TOTK instead of Skyrim or Minecraft (both of which are on the Switch and regularly go on sale—which TOTK will certainly not do for the next several years)? They do it better, take less time, and they’re 1/3 of TOTK’s asking price. For me to try Zelda again, it’s gotta do something different. Otherwise Elder Scrolls 6 is getting my money—I can already safely project it’ll be a game that will look better than all of the BOTW successors of the next two decades AND it will be more immersive AND it will cost the same. Plus, I’ll get a head start on how Zelda’s gonna play for the next 15 years ;) From these reviews, I get the sense that fans want Zelda to go stand in the Elder Scroll’s shadow for the rest of time. It’s one thing to like a game, it’s another thing to naively claim something revolutionized the gaming world (aka “this is a masterpiece!”) when it most definitely did not. TOTK’s changes were solely influenced by a) Skyrim and b) Minecraft and c) what it did in BOTW. Those are the masterpieces. The games that other games try to replicate for sales. And not one of those three are “perfect” or “without flaw”.

And then, for those who want to read it, the *optional* review rant :)

I don’t want blind enthusiasm to give a false impression of where the series should go ie convince somebody who is unsure whether or not they will like the game to buy it. Hard for me to take the “perfect” game score seriously when reviewers are clearly turning a blind eye to the game’s flaws. I’m glad you like it, but a false GOTY forecast masterpiece of perfection is misleading. The consequence of convincing people on the fence to buy the game gives Nintendo, who needs little coaxing in this regard, reason to just sit on an imperfect formula. Small improvements on a formula are still based on an original game design. There’s a lot of “not fun” parts about this game I don’t want to see again. Many of those existed in BOTW and I was devastated when they returned. If it’s a direction you’re happy with the series taking, and want to actively push for it, then you should be able to acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly and still say it’s your favorite game and help people feel comfortable trying it, without making them feel bad if they don’t. Sure, it really can be flawless and perfect, but that’s for your own personal experience, not the experience of the person who’s trying to decide whether or not the game is a good fit for them. I wish I could believe in a perfect game—but there is no perfect game in my book (there’s nothing wrong with rating a 10; my issue is with all of the reviews I have read belligerently insisting that TOTK is flawless and that nobody should dare dislike the game). Not even close. But I digress.

Have you ever bought a painting that resembles EXACTLY the same one that you may have bought 6 years prior? With just a different set of colours? Well, apparently, far too many people did it this year.
Same story, same setting, same gameplay. Try to compare the 1st minute of gameplay of BOTW and TOTK starting from the *spoilers* Room of Awakening.
Simply put, payed for nothing. The tiny little issues that were present in the prequel, evolved into stupidity, without being too honest. And on top of that, there is of course new stupidity, once more, without being too honest.
Where exactly are these so-called "dungeons"? You really want me to believe that you actually lied?

The new build mechanics are innovative, but are they ”fun”? I would argue no. In BotW I gladly seeked out all shrines because the puzzles were challenging, but here most of the puzzles are very samey and a little too easy. The counter doesn’t update for me but a rough estimate is I’m 40 hours into the game and frankly I just want to beat it and be done with it now. No other Zelda game has ever made me feel like that. While young, it immersed me in a sense of adventure and whimsy I hadn’t experienced. Nintendo built on that formula for decades with varying degrees of success and despite initial criticisms (ie, Majora’s Mask and Windwaker). But Nintendo gambled and ultimately prevailed.

Not so here. Here, corporate profit was the only driver.

I’ve invested a number of hours into TOTK at this point, and I intend to play as close to completion as I can (perhaps out of habit or spite), but absent a drastic change in the gameplay, this game is a shadow of Breath of the Wild at best. Not only is the world literally the same, but the side quests are highly similar and the fundamental game mechanics are identical. More distressing is the continuing detachment of the story from the gameplay. While it might be vogue these days for games like Elden Ring to pursue a largely plotless story line, what has always given Zelda a leg up is the immersion of its players in its history, plot and outcome. TOTK perpetuates the increasing blandness of Hyrule both from the lack of impending doom brought by Ganon but also by the sheer number of pointless side quests (never mind the failure of Nintendo to invent new non-traditional Zelda plots).

I’ll close with this: I remember waiting at a Toys R Us when OoT was released to get a copy of the gold cartridge, and I bought a Nintendo Switch precisely so I could play BOTW. No more. Until Nintendo rejects the corporatist pattern of rehashing old IP and reembraces its commitment to develop Hyrule, its lore and the essence of what makes Zelda Zelda, I’ll be holding off on future purchases of both Nintendo systems and Zelda games. I refuse to contribute to the mediocritization of one of gaming’s most cherished franchises.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Detalles clave
    Precio: $69.99/£59.99
    Desarrollador: Nintendo
Fecha de lanzamiento: 12 de mayo de 2023
    Plataformas: Nintendo Switch
Tráiler de The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

This is thanks to the Ultrahand ability, which enables Link to use Hyrule like his own personal IKEA, effortlessly assembling items found in the overworld together. During my 90-hour playthrough, I created makeshift cars, hot air balloons, airships, hovercrafts, and even rudimentary mechs. The possibilities are almost endless, and while the game offers a handful of example builds, the limitations are only tied to your own creativity.

What a surprise! This is the same review as Breath of the Wild all over again! But maybe that's all right. We know how great it is that it is a sequel and yet we never get tired of the same emotions as the previous one.

The gameplay is accessible to all gamers, more challenging than any Zelda, putting Link’s new abilities in the spotlight and making sure that none ever goes long without being useful. At the same time, certain environment fully take advantage of darker and more fear/inducing elements that serve as a nice contrast to an often very light hearted series, even when dealing with very serious matters.

Objectively the peak of Nintendo. TotK shows up a lot of open world games, and even makes BotW look like a Demo. TotK is 3 times the size, and 100s of times more complex than it's near perfect predecessor.

It's a real shame this game can't be played at 60 fps despite the fact that easily available hardware has existed for the past several years capable of achieving just that.

As for the game itself it is overwhelmingly huge, I've spent dozens of hours just exploring this map and I'm still finding new stuff at every turn (and I've put about 300 hours in botw). In love with the ultrahand, never has stacking a dozen springs on top of one another to launch yourself into the stratosphere been more fun (if it's ever been done at all in a videogame before this). The dungeons in this game are a major improvement, I've only done 3, but I've found the build up to them to be a lot of fun and the puzzles in them to be quite creative. NPCs in this game are a lot more interesting than in botw and the sidequests are actually worth doing, so much so that I think I'm going to complete them all. The story has some of the issues of botw, namely being the return of memories, but they do tell a more interesting story and the payoff once they're all collected is actually pretty good because you don't already know how its going to end, unlike in botw where the memories only serve as window dressing and don't tell you anything you don't already know past your first visit to Kakariko Village. Also the way in which memories are discovered is so much more interesting, being a full on side-mission, instead of just "go to picture here and press A".

This game is just so much fun to play and I can't recommend it enough. It definitely deserves the praise it's getting, though I can understand frustration with its below par performance on a console that was already behind in technology 6 years ago.

    - Better music
    - More interesting NPC's
    - More locations: Sky, Caves, Underground, Wells.
    - Dungeons
    - More items. Bomb flowers are back! Sticky lizard elixer FTW!
    - More interesting shrines. I paticularly like the ones that take all equipment away and you have to rely on what's given in the shrine to fight.
    - Increased difficulty. Seriously, I've died a lot, and I like that! I've had to make use of items in more interesting ways to win fights and often can't rely just on flurry rush to take down mobs of enemies.
    - Better abilities. Fuse, Ultrahand, Ascension are far more interesting than Stasis, Cryonisis, and Bombs comparing this to Breath of the Wild.
    - Skydiving! The first time you jump off a Sky Island down onto Hyrule is a rush.

This game is amazing and simply fun to play.

Some problems I've found include the following:
    - Link doesn't pick up rupees when he walks over them. Each rupee requires a button press which is annoying.
    - Ultrahand can be finicky. While building things is fun, it's also very time consuming. If things are stuck together in the wrong way, unstucking them can make a whole vehicle fall apart :/
    - Horses are pretty useless. You can whistle for them to come to you, but the range of whistling is too short. I wish horses could be summoned wherever you are on the map.

That said, I still very much enjoy playing Tears of the Kingdom, and imagine playing it for hundreds of hours. I can't believe this amazing world is in the palm of my hands, and I recommend it be in yours. Happy Gaming Gamers :D

Personally I also found the games puzzles in BotW to be more thought provoking and challenging as I can pretty much beat every shrine with two platforms and the recall ability. The recall ability is just beyond broken, I can cheese my way through the game using it. Why waste time trying to figure out how to get over something when I can just use recall and two platforms of any kind. The ultrahand ability is just stupid, I literally haven't seen anything at over 100 hours in that I can legit say is worth wasting time to build. Cars look stupid,, just a flat platform and wheels, I'd rather just have the bike from BotW. The summons you gain from defeating the bosses suck, I don't like playing with an AI teammate so I always disable them, they are nowhere near as good as the BotW abilities. Essentially BotW was better in nearly every way. The size of the map is meh, considering it's the same map as BotW just made bigger by adding the sky, depths, and caves , honestly it actually seems like less is happening in the world around you, there are definitely way less plants as there are more total in TotK but they are more spread out. I could not possibly rate this better than an 7 as it's truly nowhere near as enjoyable as BotW and everything annoying about the first game remains in this. Could have been so much better, but hey, a lot of people like it, and I wasted my money on it so obviously it's a succes, but there is absolutely no possible way this game is a 10, no possible way.

The story begins with a gripping search for the source of a mist that has sickened many people of Hyrule. You are pulled into it and it seems as if you are there. As the story unfolds, you are pulled into it and do not want to put the game down. You are stuck on the story, the mechanics, and the map. You surely will enjoy this game, and I would recommend it to anyone. It is a Game Of The Year contender, and the bar has been set high, very high.

BotW is my all-time favorite game, but I uninstalled TotK after 4 hours of playing. This game is completely secondary, it reuses all it can from BoTW and is practically COMMITED to not saying anything new. It is essentially a huge time sink - ten times the amount of meaningless puzzles and other grind without an emotional core or overwhelming sense of discovery that made everything worth it in Breath of the Wild. The tutorials that were almost absent in the first game are now everywhere, you are drowned in text. The "fresh" core mechanic is building simple structures. If you find doing that over and over again to solve identical problems tedious, you will have a bad time. I personally find it irritating when the game constantly gives me obstacles like a wide chasm with prosaic building blocks on the side. It's like developers are more worried about their mechanic not being used enough than my immersion and flow. BotW was never THIS heavy-handed and prescriptive.

The story offers nothing of substance. Most of the time you are running around meeting old characters in new places on the map to get random quests. Even if you are curious of "what happened to that spot I liked", you will probably only find a Yiga hideout there for no reason. 90% of cinematics is Link staring at his hand or sword, even as something horrible is happening/just happened to his friend (Zelda). In BoTW almost every major character had a little character ark - Zelda (with self-doubt), Link (opening up), Rivali (pride), Sidon (grief), Mipha (unrequited love), Yunobo (courage), Paya (being assertive), etc, etc. Many characters had real flaws. I've watched streamers finish TotK, and it's as shallow as a bird bath. Most characters are content, all struggles come from facing an external enemy, everyone is dedicated to Link from the start so there is no tension in him winning them over, or when duty calls them. No relationships get meaningful developments, in fact it feels like friendships and love regressed from the first game.

To sum it up, Tears of the Kingdom is a huge time sink with massive copy-pasted areas and repetitive tasks, reskinned core elements, a few new mechanics that many will find tedious, and no interest for character development or telling a powerful story. I wish I could get a refund.

This game is GOAT. It has everything I ever wanted in a game. Large vast beautiful environments with lots of verticality and subterranean environments to explore. It's also full of great puzzles and and crafting. Doesn't get better than this.

This game is a solid meh out of 10. All the puzzles and "temples" are pretty dull using the glue mechanic as a crutch. The cut scene at the end of every fight IS THE EXACT SAME, just told by a different person. I don't understand. Nintendo didn't have to create a new engine, and the world was already mostly built from botw. I'm not even going to mention the stupid high price of 70 bucks and piss poor performance and graphic fidelity. For the price and how it runs I can't recommend anyone purchase this for use on a switch at its current price. Expand

Tutorial zone is much too long and difficult. It doesn’t motivate to continue. I’m close to giving up on the game all together if it’s this brutal. Breath of the wild was much more accessible.

Nintendo managed to do the impossible, and top Breath of the Wild. The new gameplay mechanics makes the experience fresh and new. They doubled the size of the world, made more than the 120 shrines the previous game had, and made tons of additions and alterations to the original Hyrule map. This game will entertain you for hundreds of hours.

There are no right answers for puzzles in this game, the player has infinite creativity and options. The sky and depths add so much more to the game and the zonai devices compliment that very well. But really everything was improved on from the previous game, somehow.

People saying it's just a big DLC are high or dumb. It's a wonderful game but it is not perfect. The climbing and some other controls are still as janky as BOTW. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is boring. Very, very, very boring. I loved Breath of the Wild. It had narrative drive, momentum, it felt free and fun. It felt like an adventure. This game feels like a guided tour of a place I've already been. The overworld is basically the same, with lazy, re-used assets. The main powers of this game are mediocre at best, with mostly limited uses, and the one (Ultrahand) that has more use, is a joke at best, and a time-sucking waste of effort at worst. In addition, the story is worse than Skyward Sword, mostly a big waste of words. There's a total of about five minutes of real story, repeated ninety times by different characters. Shrines are gimmicky, annoying, and boring, uninspired and repetitive. And farming. Money is way harder to get, and leveling armor requires more resources than before, with lower drop rates and rarer item finds. This game is designed, front to back, to waste your time. The Depths is big, vast, and...empty. The darkness fails to hide the lack of content in it. It serves mostly (utterly) as yet another time sink, and nothing more. And the sheer number of whiny, badly written, flat out obnoxious NPCs with sidequest after sidequest after sidequest is totally overdone. This game feels like a paint-by-numbers DLC for Breath of the Wild made entirely in a boardroom by cash-mongering administrators with no idea what a makes a game good. Sure, it has good critic reviews. But critics have to give good reviews or they don't get review copies. This game will, in the future, be viewed as the next Skyward Sword. A bad game, made badly by people who have no idea what fans of the series even want. Expand

Nintendo managed to create something technically astonishing but also incredibly fun to play. I can not overstate this enough. Please, do yourself a favor and give this game a real shot. Awesome open world. Every 10 minutes I encounter something new to do in the open world. I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
