As a game, Tears of the Kingdom is an unfathomably stellar experience. It's Breath of the Wild but bigger, how could that not be perfect?

However, as a product and more importantly as a sequel, TotK ultimately fails to innovate beyond the formula BotW modernized 6 years ago. Ultrahand and Zonai Devices are wholly redundant mechanics that do little to expand on BotW's problematic lack of extrinsic motivation. They aren't inherently fun to use, if anything they're frustrating. The satisfaction comes from seeing the validation of your own ingenuity and experimentation, not the action of using the tool itself. Because of this, the system quickly becomes redundant as you'll naturally gravitate towards the most efficient solutions that spend the least time using the frustrating Ultrahand mechanic. Rockets solve virtually every traversal obstacle. The weapons do no damage and are simply used to distract enemies. The few tools that have specific uses for bosses or quests gain nothing from the novelty of being freely movable and attachable together. They act like old fashioned Zelda items, their mere existence is the solution to the puzzle. So how does this new system expand the game? Much like the Ultrahand itself, attaching an engineering sandbox onto a pre-existing world and formula doesn't create anything new. The synergy you achieve is sourced by the creator's ingenuity, that is to say the player is the one creating something new, not the developer. I think the new sandbox is phenomenal and a technical marvel, but it exists in isolation from the formula and doesn't innovate beyond where it was 6 years ago.

But wait, there are two new entire maps! The sky islands barely add 1/20th to the existing playable area. The way you reach them is uninteresting, the falling pieces are mostly scripted so your ventures into the sky are highly regulated by the developers' intentions. Besides that you can just balloon and rocket your way to whatever island you want, so immersive! The depths are a vast wasteland littered with nothing but rocks and copy pasted enemies. The only thing you can do down there is hunt for reused armor pieces from the last game and mine Zoanite for the new energy system. Hit rocks for 2 hours to make your car drive for 20 seconds longer, 10/10 game of the year. There are a plethora of new mechanics, interactions, and enemies, but it's all contained within the same world and game-play loop. I lost all intrigue after the first 3-4 hours when I realized just how little new content there was beyond the main questline. Oh they added new side quests... to unlock reused content. What's in this new area? Copy pasted enemies and loot. It feels like this game is catered to players who played BotW for 50 hours in 2017 and not the die hard fans who played for 100s of hours over the years like myself. Don't get me wrong, I love the game and plan to play it for years just like BotW. But it's 2021 $60 DLC good, not 2023 $100 flagship good.

I suggest not using fast travel, to really get the most out of the experience. Massive, yet dense world. Story is even more fantasy immersion. If all you see is BOTW DLC, I fear what life may look like through your eyes. Historic work of art and an engineering marvel.

While I'm not denying that you can be a Zelda fan just by playing that one game, it sure does make it hard for some people to be retrospective on a series they've literally played a single entry to (and the most recent one at that). if you're going to play this game i have a couple things you shouyld do beforehand: 1) stop playing breath of the wild - TOTK is a massively expanded upon version of BOTW, and what I've seen is most people playing TOTK with the same gameplay style as BOTW and then complain how its just like BOTW. 2) play literally any other Zelda game first - you'll get a hang of the typical set up this series has and loops it throws you into (you may still complain that they're all too similar, but if so, maybe you actually just don't like Zelda?) and 3) just play the game. games are a lot harder to get into and to have fun with when you're constantly trying to compare the game to something else.

With hope in my heart and nostalgia's embrace,
I ventured forth, a jester, to jest this Zelda space.

The open world beckoned, vast and so wide,
But lacking enchantment, it made me deride.
Wind Waker's seas, a sight full of grand,
While Tears of the Expansion, a lackluster land.

Dungeons once grand, puzzles crafted with care,
Now pale shadows, a tedious affair.
Rooms and puzzles skippable, immersion defaced,
No treasures to find, no challenges to embrace.

Maps, compasses, keys, they've faded, it's true,
Took an arrow to the knee, a sad adieu.
Replaced by simplicity, devoid of true zest,
Puzzles forsaken, immersion put to the test.

Breakable weapons, tools that won't last,
Zelda's essence faded, a relic from the past.
The Blood Moon, tired and worn, in its repeat,
Rehashed memory cleaning, a cycle so fleet.

A lengthy two-hour tutorial, a burden to bear,
Tears of the Expansion, time wasted in despair.
An identity crisis, lost in its lore,
Assassin's Creed's shadow, knocking at the door.

"Ubitowers" once more, an intrusion so odd,
Zelda's spirit diluted, a fusion so flawed.
    Minecraft's influence joining this melee,
    Challenges diminished, immersion in disarray.

Link to the Past, a standard so high,
Minish Cap and Ocarina of Time, oh my!
They set the bar for what Zelda should be,
A rich tapestry of lore and adventure for thee.

A sequel awaits, skepticism in hand,
Will Call of Duty gameplay next invade this land?
Firing at Moblins with a Model Deku slide-action grand!

Weapons are still super fragile. Only now you have to fuse stuff to weapons when you get them, making collecting them even MORE tedious than before!

Enemies scale too strongly. There's no sense of progression or getting stronger. Early game: 3 hearts, I die in 2 hits. Later in the game: I have 12 hearts, but enemies now do 7 hearts worth of damage so I still die in 2 hits.

Performance is absolutely TERRIBLE. Constant frame drops (from an already low 30 fps) when too many enemies are on the screen, when there are too many trees/buildings on the screen, when you use a power, etc. And sometimes the game will just FREEZE for several seconds while it loads if you try to dive through the sky too fast.

I hate to say it, but the folks looking forward to this game most will likely be the ones most disappointed. In the time since BOTW left its mark on gaming, we’ve seen its mechanics recycled 100 times over in other games.

This might sound like typical sequel nitpicking, but I enjoyed both Ragnarok and Forbidden West quite a bit despite beating the original releases… The problem is that BOTWs unique charm was largely a product of its inventiveness and novelty — in that way, the sequel is NOTHING like its predecessor… closer to the opposite.

Iterative installments work better when leveraging improved tech to benefit QOL / graphics. This is literally the same game with superimposed map expansion & some minor tweaks.

TOTK is not bad, but it is essentially large DLC & the critic reviews are EXTREMELY hyperbolic. Maybe I would have enjoyed it had I not sunk 400 hrs into the original, but that was a long time ago — I felt nothing on this one.

    **__Music & Graphics: 1.5/2__**
The slightly cell shaded style of breath of the wild shines through in this game as well as new designs for enemies to make them not look as samey. Music wise there are a lot of standout tracks and not a single track where I was like meh.

    **__Performance: :star: 1/2__**
The performance of the game is really what holds it back from being scored anywhere above an 8.5 the game does a great job of managing the performance issues however there are certain parts of the game where it's not ignorable and begins to chug a bit. But a majority of the game is stable enough to land it at least 1 star.

    **__Challenge: 1.5/2__**
The challenge within the game feels like it's much more balanced then botw where in that game after like a handful of shrines pretty much most enemies other than guardians are kinda just cannon fodder as most higher tier enemies are locked behind divine beasts and they don't show up in divine beasts so you could almost never see those harder enemies. In totk it is definitely a challenging game if you don't prepare properly for an engagement, however with some many tools to deal with the many problems you will face within the kingdom of Hyrule it is a very good strength of this game in my opinion.

Of course, this game has flaws, but from my experience the state that the game is in was better compared to most triple A video games. Some framerate issues rarely occur but they are not game breaking. As TOTK, builds upon its predecessor in gameplay the storytelling is about the same but has different elements to continue the lore from BOTW. It will be interesting to see where future Zelda games go from here.

TOTK for me is 10 out of 10. For being a magnificent game in terms of gameplay and building upon the storyline. Not to mention the building mechanic of fanplanes, hovercrafts or even a tank to eliminate Bokoblins or Hinox. Definitely a game I would recommend playing.

The gimmic of crafting quickly becomes tedious and repetitive, and just sticking a stone on the end of a stick, or placing a mushroom on your shield gets old and quite frankly both look horrendous and feel super lazy from a developing perspective. Where as some weapons actually take on a new look when combined, other quiite simply have said item stick out, looking like an eye sore.
You would expect so much better from the Zelda franchise, it certanly made legendary games before, this just feels like a last cash grab before they let go of the brand and moves on.
It could have been a great game, even though this new format is not my cup of tea, but i cant fathom how little have been done during 6 years in development, when you have free mods for games like skyrim, made up by a small team of ~5 individuals which remodels and change the basegame to a bigger degree than this changed the original BOTW, it feels like a fan made mod, and it does not justify its price tag.
There is ofcourse some fun to be had playing, but it bores too soon, and for the price its a rip-off

It is this rich lore that, I believe, has given the Zelda franchise the long life it has. A captivating world and history with rich story telling and compelling characters that you fall in love with every time they a reborn into the kingdom of hyrule.

I feel like a lot of people, I was both excited and skeptical about jumping back into the same landscape that I had already played for well over 100 hours in BOTW. Excited to continue to see this version of Link and Zelda when historically we would have moved on to a different version. And skeptical for the same reason...we are returning to the same map.

Even with the early trailer showing that the sky was going to be a part of the gameplay, I was still skeptical with the thought that it was cool to have the sky be an element in the game, but how much can they really do with the same map? Knowing that the Switch hardware is SO limited and that it seemed like BOTW was already pushing it to max capacity, I didn't really think you could do much more. And I was very pleasantly surprised at how wrong I was.

Stepping out onto the ledge in the first sky island at the start of TOTK reignited the excitement I remember feeling at the beginning of BOTW when you walk out of the cave onto the hill, looking over a broken and wild hyrule. And it makes sense that they would take this route. How could you top the opening to BOTW? Easy...you do the same thing but 20k feet high. Jumping out and falling through the air landing into a pool of water below had my jaw drop and brought such a sense of wonder to the world laid out in front of me. Even knowing below me was a similar landscape, I couldn't wait to get to the ground level.

Reaching the ground and truly starting the story ended up being exciting because of all the changes I was already seeing and also comforting since there were familiar things around me that I had poured so much time into before. And seeing a grown version of Purah brought it all together perfectly! I couldn't help but smile at every turn during the start of the game. Even with coming back to the same Hyrule, there was still this sense of unknown simply because we have never had a true Zelda sequel. What happens after you save the kingdom? How do the relationships you made adapt and grow after the credits roll?

As I explored the ground level I slowly started to realize how densely packed this game truly is. When I read that Nintendo had wanted to add a lot of features to BOTW but couldn't due to Wii U hardware limitations, I never thought they meant this much...especially on the switch hardware! Interactions, side quests, passing people on the road, raiding enemy camps, CAVES EVERYWHERE, wells to jump into in nearly every town, it was all packed into this game!

As I revisited some locations like a large tree stump to collect a korok seed I was surprised at what I found. In BOTW it was simply a flat stump but in TOTK there is now a massive whole in the stump that leads to a HUGE cave/root system that I spent 15-20 min looking over every corner of.

And I haven't even mentioned The Depths!! Having no idea this was in the game (again didn't watch a trailer if they mentioned it there) I came across one of the gloom Pitts with a seeming bottomless chasm. Seeing no indication that I couldn't go in I decided to jump. My jaw DROPPED by how far I fell and as it got pitch black I tried to figure out what the heck just happened. Then I discovered there is a THIRD whole map in this game. Not just the ground or the sky but a subterranean level!?

I have put in close to 30 hours playing which is less than a lot out there and in that 30 I feel like I have barely scratched the surface...actually I haven't even scratched the surface. I still have a large portion of all three maps that remain unexplored.

What I love about TOTK is that Nintendo has expanded so much on top of the open world design of BOTW. It's not about having an arrow at the top of your screen or knowing the exact spot of where to go for the next side quest, it is exploration in its purest form. Here is a map with some rough guide points for the story you are playing...everything else is yours to explore.

In a gaming culture that continues to be full of bloated open world games that release in a broken state and hold the players had at every turn, here is a game that builds on top of its foundation in the best way possible

If I gave Zelda BOTW 10/10 I decided to give 9/10 to TOTK because there is nothing revolutionary, this revolution was done by BOTW and it deserved 10/10 Nintendo was rude to experiment and did a perfect job.

For that TOTK just improve some details on BOTW but not revolutionary at all

    Bad-
    Occasional performance issues.

    Thoughts-
Breath of the Wild hit the gaming industry with the force of a supernova, instantly celebrated as arguably the greatest game ever made, and remaking a lot of the industry in its image. It should not have been possible for its follow up to hit as hard as it – and to be fair, Tears of the Kingdom will never have the same influence and impact Breath of the Wild did (how can it? It itself is following in its footsteps after all).

But it manages to hit almost that hard anyway, and it achieves that with a staggeringly high level of quality – a level so high that it makes you wonder at the chasm separating the quality of this game, and most other games on the market – all delivered across an almost unacceptably large volume of content to boot. Breath of the Wild may have been the more influential game (and for many that preferred its simplicity and elegance of design, it will probably remain their preferred one of the pair), but in almost every way, by almost every conceivable metric, Tears of the Kingdom is the better game. And delivering a follow up to one of the best games ever made that is, somehow, even better? No words are necessary at this point. This game is a masterpiece, and any fan of the medium will do themselves a disservice if they don’t check it out.

Simple, after beating the final boss I expected to wake up and do stuff but no, you cannot play after you defeat the demon king, the game will put you back before the fight for you to do stuff, but the demon king must still be alive, and that actually threw me off so hard I lost any interest in the game. I had so much will and hope to explore more of the map and find more shrines and get more buff but the fact that I cannot do that with the final boss defeated has killed every intention I had to keep playing. I wish I had known that before so I could've done some more exploring.

The perfect balance between the open world exploration of Breath of the Wild, and the more linear storytelling and dungeon/temple solving of Ocarina of Time. Anyone rushing to complete this game in less than 50 hours is missing out on truly enjoying the game of a generation, whereas most will hopefully be spending 100's of hours exploring this world, being distracted by every NPC, every stable quest, and every stray banana making you question if the direction you're going in is a good one!

If gamers are still six years on discovering mechanics in Breath of the Wild that no-one has seen yet, then Fuse and Ultrahand will be keeping YouTubers and Twitter users alike surprised and confused as to how the hell Nintendo's team pulled this off for the next decade and then some. A technical feat that has shocked developers worldwide, and had the competition in awe on social media. If you choose to pass this game by, you're missing out on the closest to perfection in gaming this era. A masterpiece.

People who say this is game of the year clearly haven't played/experienced many good single-player games. I found the open world to be quite boring to traverse and the enemy combat to be shallow. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is quite literally the best The Legend of Zelda experience, far exceeding its prior outing Breath of the Wild. The entire game is a puzzle, from navigating the three worlds Sky/Hyrule Kingdom/Depths to the new Zoni shrines and everything in between. This game is a treasure. Everything you see you can pretty much interact with and learning how to make use of every tool you have available to you is challenging and rewarding.

I can excuse the graphics being somewhat lacking when considering that the hardware the game is designed for is nearly 10 years old. It is truly breathtaking to see. Load times are nearly nonexistent on 10 year old hardware. When you fast travel it takes seconds, and you can transition from the sky to the ground to the depths seamlessly with no loading and no hitching.

Definitely a must play if you own a Nintendo Switch this year!

Outside of children, I genuinely cannot understand why anyone with a decent amount of braincells would act like Tears of The Kingdom is even half as good as the RE4 remake or Hogwarts Legacy. I also appreciate the originality of the Depths; no prior Zelda game has been set underground and had they placed a greater focus on that, perhaps the premise being that Link is trapped underground following the opening cinematic and has to work his way back up to Hyrule, it could've been incredible. The exploration aspect on its own can still be fun and lead to some humorous or gorgeous encounters.

In saying that, it inherits all the same annoyances as BotW - tedious game mechanics, constant stuttering frame rates, convoluted button inputs and delayed responses, repetitive and (mostly) fruitless side quests, a disjointed story, weak voice acting (to be clear I blame Nintendo's lazy direction for this, not the VAs themselves). But on top of all of BotW's half-baked assets, chucking in a souless Skyloft 2.0 and the under-utilised Depths makes TotK feel even more spread-too-thin than its predecessor.

As well as making the Depths more of a focus, I believe that making Zelda's moments playable would've really elevated this game. Spirit Tracks is the only Zelda game to date to have the player control Zelda, and I think a second one is long overdue. The context of THIS Zelda's journey in particular would've made for a brilliant way of keeping BotW's map while doing something SIGNIFICANTLY fresh with it.

Definitely more than just a DLC, this game improves in almost every aspect in comparison to BotW.
But its not without its flaws.

The games open world is once again one of its biggest strengths. You can find stuff everywhere, the game is full of interesting things to do.
But in later stages of the game, I didnt even bother opening the chests in shrines anymore, as its just another weapon or other useless junk - the game is missing some collectibles aside from just korok seeds to give loot more variance, instead of just another diamond.

Side Quests, Exploration, Music and the polish that this game delivers are top notch, one of the best in open world videogames. But the MainQuest is just really weak, with collecting 4-5 macguffins to open the path to progress further. And this gets very old, very quick.
The temples are incredibly boring designed, the mechanics are incredibly repetetive, with most of the challenges being transporting an item to a destination point. Comparing to older titles, there is no engaging mechanic you need to use to solve the puzzles and riddles. It's Ultrahand, in every situation.

Ultrahand is a quite clever mechanic, but so incredibly overused, its getting boring to solve every puzzle with it. The game's desperately missing more variety in this aspect.

After 70+ hours with just another "find the 4 items"-mission, I really hate-finished the end, although a specific plot twist was really interesting and definitely one of the reasons that I still cared about the story.

Game's definitely hold back by hardware limitation of the old switch system, nintendo really should have released a new hardware at this point, it looks so much better on emulation systems with 2k or higher resolution and 60+ fps than on switch. It's in every aspect the better experience to play this on PC with an Emulator, and that's completely nintendos fault, still not releasing a new hardware.

Verdict: Very Repetetive, boring and lazy progression design. Beatiful and fun open world.
Story is not bad, but the way it's presented to the player doing sidequests first doesn't make sense.
Still no voice acting, still old hardware, and still breakable weapons.
Its breathtaking to explore the world, but it gets very old, very fast.

If you liked BotW you will also like this game.
It's good, but by no means a masterpiece.

One of the greatest games of all time. The map is huge, easily more than twice the size of BOTW map, and there are so many things to do I doubt it's even possible to 100% it in less than a year.

This has quickly become one of my favorite games of all time
The ultra hand ability is so fun to mess around with ,the side quests, bosses, dungeons and the overall story is much more fun then breath of the wild but the Nintendo switch system does show it's age with some really bad frame drops

Not just GOTY, it’s the best game ever made. All these negative reviews are ridiculous especially the 0 out of 10 reviews.

It's fine. The story is basically nonsense and disregards Botw by acting like it never happened. The answer to the question "Oh what's over there?" 95% of the time "it's a shrine." The other times you just get boring crafting materials or armor that's just cosmetic unremarkable nostalgia bait. Weapons are still boring and armors are still as boring and useless as in Botw. Get this if you have a hard-on for Zelda games, I guess. But unless you identify with that remark, just do yourself a favor by skipping this and saving $70 in the process. Expand

Absolutely amazing, this game is the worthy successor to BOTW. It keeps what made it good while adding 2 new maps and plenty of mechanics. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I wasn't sure how Nintendo would find a way to top their work in Breath of the Wild back when it came out, but I feel they have here – with years of more polish applied and refined exploration. [Issue #66 – July/August 2023, p. 71]

The good thing is that, thanks to the limited possibilities, the creators couldn't go crazy and swing for hundreds of game miles. Instead, they created what could be called Elden Ring in a travel pack. [Issue#328]

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has lived up to the high expectations created by the success of Breath of the Wild with its exquisitely intertwined gameplay systems, outstanding music, and a legendary story culminating in a magnificent denouement. It's not every day that such a special video game like this comes around. Truly the stuff of legend.
