Incredibly fun and beautiful. Gorgeous range of art styles present throughout the game that are all a pleasure through play through and while the game is relatively easy, there are definitely some more challenging puzzles and moons.

    Excellent in every aspect.

This is what differentiates the Switch.

Play on the XBOX / PS4 and be required to pay more for the whole game...

or just buy Nintendo and get the FULL game at purchase.

I can't fault the production values of this game, everything is top notch. The ability to be able to jump into your enemies works really well. Level designs are clever and imaginative. Well, for me the later Mario games (Odyssey, Galaxy, etc) although very cleverly done, can't escape the fact that platform games in this day and age are, to be blunt, quite tedious. It's a game genre from forty years ago, and for me is just too simplistic. I'd much rather be playing a fast sonic level, or shooter like fortnite, or rpg like the wticher. Nintendo have done brilliantly well to keep Mario as high profile as he is, but at the end of the day jumping on top of things is really quite boring. Expand

After watching the Nintendo Switch reveal event in January of 2017, it was very apparent what were the two pieces of switch software everyone would be craving for. The legend of zelda breath of the wild, and Super Mario Odyssey. I bought my switch solely because of those two games. Breath of the wild immediately didn't disappoint, where as Odyssey is much different, for many reasons. I envisioned myself getting lost in the kingdoms and mechanics of odyssey after all of the fantastic trailers we were treated to, but sadly at first that never happened. I found myself having fun but not immersed. The cappy mechanic wasn't as engaging as I thought it would be. I beat the game fairly quickly and was finished. I decided the game was a decent 7 or 8 and was done with it. My intentions wasn't to go back and play the game but with a portable console sometimes you just need to pass the time. Much of 2019 I've found myself exploring all of the kingdoms and searching for as many moons as I could. I never did this during my first play-through and that was a big mistake. What I've learned in doing this is the moons aren't there as some worthless collectible just to pass the time and find on your way. The moons are there to encourage the player to explore the world and its mechanics. I've had a blast exploring each and every corner of these kingdoms to find my next moon. You instinctively check every box, every corner, to find those elusive moons. There's real enjoyment in trying something different or looking in the areas you've never looked and adding another one to the collection. And along the way you see the real beauty of the game in doing so. Super Mario Odyssey deserves its praise and is a true quality exclusive for the switch. As far as my opinion? It isn't perfect but it's so very close to that mark. Looking forward to seeing what's next in Mario's legendary journey, because if odyssey proves one thing, it's that's there's no telling where we'll go next. Expand

I do love this game even though it does has a lot of glitches and straight up flaws in the game. The game's concept is good but I feel like it had a lot of potential, and at times the game can just be boring and incredibly easy. But overall If you don't have this game you really should think of buying it.

Some music didn't fit the scene well at all (Seaside, I'm looking at you), and I found the various shops and items to be needless. Why would I want to buy all this crap for the inside of my ship that you see for about 5 minutes total?

It took me around 90 hours to 100% this game with all of the costumes and the worlds are very exciting to explore. I don't think its up there with BotW though as after I beat it I didn't want to come back to it nearly as much as with BotW which I think is a bit better overall because it truly innovated the open world genre. The cut scenes and the general graphic presentation is really well made and almost never has any frame drops.
There are some worlds that stand out, but in general every single one is incredibly charming and detailed. Nintendo just let their creativity flow and came up with tons of fun ideas and secrets, that keep you busy for a long time, if you want to.
Some might say the game is too easy and yeah, you don´t have to be a pro to beat it. Even my sister did without that many struggles.
BUT that´s just the genius thing about the game design I think, because everyone can get through it in his own tempo and just enjoy himself.
There are definetly some quite challenging moments in the game, if you search for them. And if you found one, the perfect controls will never give you the feeling, that its the games fault that you´ve messed up.
I would call myself more a Zelda than a Mario Fan, but I really think, Mario Odyssey is even a better game than BotW. It has the potential, to ether create great childhood memories or to make you fall in love with the Mario Series again.

This game deserves all the praise it gets and I think is genuinely the best 3D Mario game. This game does an excellent job at making you feel like a child again, playing one of your first games. I think most of the arguments made against this game are very weak. The 2 main ones I hear are, "it's to easy" and "it gets repetitive". For starters, its a game aimed at kids, what did you really expect? I wouldn't even say the game is a complete cakewalk, as some parts towards the end get genuinely hard and some moon puzzles can be tricky. Admittedly, a bit more challenge would be appreciated, but I expect easy gameplay from a Mario game. The other argument is it gets repetitive. If you simply complete the main story, that point does not apply at all. I feel it only gets repetitive for completionists. Which I did 100% the game because its that much fun. But hey, if you had to come up with 880 objectives, I think you may want to repeat a few. Again this game isn't a 100% masterpiece, it has some very very small issues. But I think its as close to a true masterpiece a Mario game has gotten. If you own a Switch, you have to own this game. Expand

It's a good game, don't get me wrong, but I feel like it was very "zeldafied". I prefer Marios where the course itself is the challenge, like Super Mario 3D Land, rather than picking up compelling items to progress. But that's just my opinion. What is not just an opinion is about the camera: sometimes it is terrible.

    PROS:
You know your game is good when it's fun to just move around, Mario's moveset is bigger than ever, there's even a new move: the infnite roll! and a returning one, the dive!
Cappy, he's a great addition, he makes for an awesome feature that never gets old and keeps things fresh so that it never feels like the same, and it doesn't feel like an after though, too! Its very fleshed out and balanced, just the way I like it.
    The OST, just, the OST.
The world are massive! There's so much to see and do and they're so filled with charm!
The boss battles are so creative and original, each one test the skills that you learned in that world, which I really like!
The Snapshot mode is an awesome feature, now you can make memes like never before!
There is SO MUCH POST GAME CONTENT ITS UNREAL! I won't spoil it but there's a lot.
The costumes, although being cosmetics, are a very nice addition to Odyssey and are just so cool! They reference so many things and is such a good bit of fan service to long time fans.
The fact they brought back Pauline from the dead puts a smile on my face.
The difficulty is just right: it goes from baby to semi challenging, not hard, just challenging, its just right for newcomers and old-timers alike.
Multiplayer is a nice addition, although it can get pretty hecktic lol.

    CONS:
The Power Moons are everywhere, and sometimes too easy to get: Kick a rock, POWER MOON, Sit on a bench next to a lonely guy, POWER MOON. BREATHE OXYGEN, POWER MOON For me, this didn't affect my experience with the game too much, but its still worth mentioning, as this can be a major turn off for some.
Motion controls are forced down your throat and some moves are locked behind them, didn't bother me too much since the Joy Cons were my main controllers but if you're using a pro controller, this can be infuriating.

    And that's it!
    Should you buy this ga-YES.
    Overall, I give this game a 10/10.

Some actions have mandatory motion controls to preform the action. Another is some of the kingdoms feel a little drawn out and not as original. For example of an amazing one, the Luncheon Kingdom. That place is so interesting, colourful and beautiful, but then there's the Sand Kingdom, which is mostly dull and boring until you save it. The visuals are good, not great. The mechanics haven't changed from Mario 64 which is why it didn't receive a 0 from me. This game is packed with challenges and stages that are super satisfying to blaze through once you get good with the complex jumps and bounces, yet accessible enough that a 6 year- old can play the game. I absolutely love how Nintendo rewards those players who choose to challenge themselves to reach places that look as though they aren't accessible, and rewards us with big shining piles of coins.

Every single kingdom also feels different, and you can always choose to travel the straight- forward path, or if you want to challenge yourself to be able to skip the more tedious parts. The bosses are a great example of this, where all of the bosses take several minutes to beat, but can be defeated in less than 30 seconds if you really know what you are doing. It is just so satisfying to skip the longer phases of boss fights, given that you dare to challenge yourself.

The kingdoms are also beautiful, and are large enough that your movement doesn't feel limited, but are not so big that the size slows you down. When this is accompanied by a great musical score, every moment of collecting power moons and searching for purple coins becomes amazingly fun.

The story itself, and core gameplay is not that great, however, and never require you to do anything more than a basic jump. It is such a shame that Nintendo didn't make this game a bit harder, and didn't encourage the players to challenge themselves more. I have recommended this game to countless people I know, and some have told me they didn't like it, as it was to easy and bare- bones, and I totally see how players feel this when they don't actively try to challenge themselves.

For those that do, however, this game is an absolute blast, and nearly perfect for a game centred around gameplay, rather than story.

Each kingdom you visit has its own charm with so many things to discover and have fun with. The music, the graphics, the controls, the gameplay, it's all so so good. Each kingdom is completely full of content and someone going through for the first time will find dozens of hours in it to explore everything. No idea how they'll top this with the next 3d Mario.

There are a couple small reasons that my rating is a 9/10 instead of a 10/10. One is that there are some weird quirks to the motion controls. I found myself discovering moves I had no idea Mario could do well over halfway through the game because I moved the controller by accident, making Mario throw his hat a certain different way or something. It also seemed like there wasn't a way to do some of the hat throws without using motion controls which is a bummer - I found throwing the hat in a circle around you in particular to be very inconsistent and annoying to execute. If there's a way to do that without motion controls, I would have loved to know it for my playthrough of the game.

The other reason is that some of the kingdoms (like the Wooded kingdom) are absolutely amazing. They are full to the brim with enticing exploration opportunities, innovative level design, and just dripping with charm. I got absolutely lost in the Wooded Kingdom the first time I went there and just lost 3-4 hours running around doing whatever. Then there are other kingdoms that are... just a bit more bland. They're not bad, or boring, they're just not quite up to the level of some of the others. In these kingdoms, I was glad I was done with them by the time I got to the end so that I could get to better ones. It's not to say I had a bad time with any of the kingdoms, but some definitely outshine others.

Overall this is such an amazing game from Nintendo that takes everything that made 64 and Sunshine so awesome back in the day and refines it down to the last detail. This is a must-play game for everyone with a Switch.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game feels like a combination of Super Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and both Mario Galaxy games in one massive entry. A fun title that will be the focus of several Mario related subjects until the release of New Super Mario Bros Deluxe.
However, there are a few things that weigh this game down quite a bit for me.

Firstly, while I do enjoy the costume gimmick, I don't see the appeal several of the costumes and needed to purchase specific costumes for certain moons.

Secondly, the game play isn't entirely innovative. Sure the whole "Mario possess objects with Cappy" is cool and all, but after a while it gets old (not to mention a lack of enemies you can capture) and boring much like the gimmick of having a Luma fight with you in Mario Galaxy.

Finally, after finishing the core game and collecting as many moons as I had the patience for, I didn't see any replay value. In fact the main games end, where the Mushroom Kingdom is unlocked, there isn't much else to do.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
