Best 3D Mario game ever made. The main campaign felt quite short and there's an oversaturation of moons, but the end game makes up for it. The more I dug into this game the more I find myself enjoying it.

But other than that I can barely find a flaw in this game. Truly a masterpiece of gaming. Expand

I give it 9/10 because I personally don't think it is quite as good as some previous games, such as the Mario Galaxy series or Mario 64, but it is definitely amazing nonetheless. I am usually a lot cheaper than that lol. But Super Mario Odyssey was definitely a system seller for me and the first Nintendo system I have owned since the SNES back in the mid 90's. The last time I played a Mario game was to its end was Super Mario 3 and I guess as I got into my teenage years my tastes for games started to change so I left Mario and Nintendo behind. But now I have a big boy job and want to own anything I can afford so here we go I got me the Switch Odyssey Edition.

The first thing I noticed right off the bat was how tight the controls feel even with my pro controller. At no point did I ever even think about input lag and Nintendo should be commended for making this a priority. The detail in the world is just incredible given the hardware limitations. So much detail in every corner of the map. Mechanically this one of the most clever and well thought out games I have ever played. Every move that Mario and his captured enemies can perform has a purpose and the platforms are designed based on these abilities and not the other way around. The story is simple yet fun. It is not a punishing platformer but rather enjoyable to discover and explore. I fell in love with the 2d sections that really brought me back to the Mario that I loved back in the day and these sections felt great to play as well. My favorite part of the game was the 2d platforming section in New Donk. What a nostalgia trip. Lastly, I would be doing the game a disservice if I did not mention the amazing soundtrack.

I only have few criticisms but they do bring this all-time great down just peg in my book. After you get through the main story the game does become a bit of a grind. Really all there is left to do is collect remaining moons, get new outfits and replay boss battles (that were slightly above average to begin with). As you collect more moons you unlock the ability to go to the dark side of the moon and the darker side of the moon. These are just boss gauntlets. I hate boss gauntlets in any game I just feel like too much of the focus was on the main story and left us wanting more in the post game but did not deliver.

With that all being said this is still one for the ages and definitely one I could see myself replaying down the line. It really makes me want to go collect older Nintendo systems and play all the Mario games that I missed over the years. 9/10 Amazing.

    Terrible game.
I 100 % it and here are some of my problems.
    1. controls are not perfect, to get perfect controls you need to buy the 60 $ Pro controller. if you have not bought the Pro controller the controls are very clunky.
    2. The game is just to short.
    3. Worlds are boring
    0/10 not worth 60 bucks

The return to the true open-world sandbox genre is very refreshing after semi-linear Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and linear 3D Land and 3D World. The amount of Moons gives the player a nice challenge. One of the things I really love is the adaptation to any kind of gamer there is. Right out of the bat, the game offers you the Assist Mode, which really helps less-skilled players. After that, you can choose, which moons to get. Some of them are easy, while some of them are hard. The varied difficulty of moons is something I really appreciate, considering I'm not that skilled myself. To reach the ending, you only need to collect the relatively easy moons. That means even the least skilled players can experience the main ending, which isn't really the case in other Mario games (For example, I've never finished Sunshine, however much I tried.) . The Cappy mechanic is wonderful. It controls very smoothly, there are loads of moves you can learn throughout the game. Capturing mechanic brought many surprises and many different styles of play. Also, because of that, the game allows many different approaches to getting many of the moons. For example, if there is a moon up in the air, you could do some advanced moves with Cappy to get the moon, or you could capture an Uproot (the creature that can extend it's legs) and get it that way. Or you could even make a tower of Goombas. The game gives you many choices. Those reasons and many more may as well be the reason why this game deserves a 10/10. Expand

This game has tons of things to do, and it really brings back the feel of Mario 64 and Sunshine. Also, I can't play this game without the motion controls. They just add so much. Also, the Luigi's Balloon World update is amazing.

To add on, 100% this game is incredibly hard. You have to achieve 880 unique power moons, then use Crazy Cap to get your total moon count to 999. Also, you have to collect 100 purple coins, unlock all souvenirs, unlock all outfits, and reach rank 50 in Balloon World.

Also, Luigi's Balloon World, Mario Odyssey's advanced movement, DLC, and Odyssey's huge speed running community always gives you a reason to go back to this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love this game. It has amazing level design, superb controls, and great graphics that fully realize what Mario is about. These topics are so huge they take separate paragraphs to talk about.

    Level Design:
The kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey are beautiful. They all stand out from each other, and everything about them is fully realized. Power moons are on a spectrum of difficulty and there are many sub-areas that are worlds of their own to look at. It has enough linearity to have a good base, while still letting you explore and find things. The fan service is also great too. You can get a Mario 64 outfit, and a Mario Sunshine outfit. You can unlock the Mario 64 courtyard, and the Mushroom Kingdom moons are star-shaped. As a bonus, the Moon Kingdom's purple coins are star bits from Super Mario Galaxy.

    Controls:
In Super Mario Odyssey, you are introduced to Cappy, a hat that you use to capture different enemies and other NPCs. Cappy can also be used as a bounce in midair. The capture ability allows for superb boss fights. Fights like Knucklotec and Cookatiel are some of the most innovative in Mario history. The controls allow for great speedrunning potential, and I myself have started speedrunning, and it has been the most fun I've had in a game.

    Graphics:
One look at Super Mario Odyssey and you can tell this is what Mario was meant to be. The game runs at a crisp 1080p60fps, and despite this supposedly being the 4k age, it still looks great. (I'm lazy, so I stopped here)

Bads: This game isn't perfect. There are some moons, like Volleyball and Jump Rope, which are challenging, but not even fun. This is the only reason this isn't a perfect game.

This game is a true odyssey. There are 17 kingdoms in the game, and none of these come close to being clones. From a prehistoric kingdom to a living and breathing city to a black and white hat kingdom to THE MUSHROOM KINGDOM! The sheer amount of creativity is extraordinary, and the interactivity of these worlds (from side quests to level design) far surpasses and Mario game before this.

The story is simple- Princess Peach has been kidnapped again and Mario fails to stop him in the beginning. He then teams up with Cappy, who's sister, Tiara, has also been taken. From there on out, you must go to each kingdom, help the people there and gain power moons in order to progress. While the story is simple, this isn't a problem: it isn't meant to be breathtaking, but rather is just there to motivate the player to play and finish the game.

The gameplay is fabulous- no complaints. Mario platforms like a dream- every hat through and jump does exactly what you tell it to, when you tell it to, and it feels incredible. The other mechanic, besides jumping, is the capture ability. This is also flawless. The game designers completely understand how to make us feel like a Goomba, Hammer Bro, Sherm or even a T-REX! The control scheme is also great- if you have a problem with it, then I seriously don't know what it is.

Now for music. Koji Kondo has worked his magic once again to give us the most diverse and (in my opinion) the best Mario music to date.

Get this game. It's awesome. However, no game is perfect, so this gets a 9/10.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that easily lives up to the Super Mario title - and is an excellent addition to the 3D lineup - if you own a Switch, this game is worth the purchase. Now let's get into the details.

    A: Music/Sounds

Unlike Breath of the Wild which had a rather lacking soundtrack, Mario Odyssey has a soundtrack which easily surpasses most of the other games in the Super Mario franchise. To be specific, I'm referring to the 2 incredible vocal tracks in the game - a very jazzy style which really feels refreshing to see in a Mario game.

The individual sounds aren't outstanding - I mean, there's not much to be good at - you have Mario noises, coin sound effects and the like.

    10/10

    B: Graphics

The graphics on Super Mario Odyssey are by far the best out of any Nintendo Switch game that we have seen thus far. Mario has never looked this good - and Nintendo knows it, since they added the surprisingly fun Photo Studio mode. Mario's nose literally has wobble physics. Need I say more?

All the environments look superb. On the top of my head, I really can't think of anything specific that had poor graphics. I'm literally not lying when I say that these graphics look like they're from a PS4 game - they're that good.

10/10 WITH my Thumbs Up of Approval

    C: Gameplay

The gameplay is as superb as ever. Platforming feels smooth and you never feel like you're accidentally misjudging where you're going to land. Every location in the game has a large variety of Moons to collect - which is fun, and adds dozens of hours of content, but I can't help but miss the level design of previous 3D Mario games like Super Mario Sunshine - where you'd have a specific objective to, say, clean a certain eel's teeth underwater.

Additionally, there are a few kingdoms in the game which are pretty much only Boss Kingdoms and have barely any Moons. I kind of wish that they didn't introduce kingdoms for them to almost be immediately dropped.

The shops which allow you to purchase outfits for Mario and souvenirs for his Odyssey ship feel really refreshing - it seems like the developers took some ideas from Breath of the Wild in the dressing-up aspect.

7/10 - Fun gameplay and collectibles, some underused kingdoms and not enough real missions

    D: Story

The story in this game isn't bad by any means. It's fun to essentially chase Bowser across the entire world to rescue Peach - and it's not like the story of previous Mario games were much more detailed...

The little mini-stories that are occurring in many of the kingdoms are also really fun to participate in, but they sort of take away the urgency that the story SHOULD have - it feels more like Mario is taking that vacation he wanted to have in Super Mario Sunshine.

The final boss battle/ending is really something special though - definitely one of the absolute highest points in the game, and is much, much better than pretty much every other 3D Mario title.

One thing that the game actually has which is really unique is the post-story content. In most 3D Mario titles, the game will pretty much forget that you ever rescued Princess Peach and she'll revert back to being imprisoned. In Super Mario Odyssey, things take a very welcomed turn of events - and once you beat the game, it will stay beaten. The post-story content isn't the best in the world, but it's certainly better than having none at all.

Unfortunately, I feel that the story is a little bit of a step down from Super Mario Galaxy - which easily had the best story of any Mario game ever. I mean, can things get any better than saving the whole galaxy whilst simultaneously rescuing Princess Peach from Bowser? The book on Rosalina's backstory was also really touching - and it was certainly a surprise to realise that Mario games could have such touching moments. As a result of this, it's a little sad to see just another super happy Mario game with no real dramatic moments at all - it's not surprising, but I feel that Mario games could use more moments like this.

9/10 - Post-story content, fun story - but nothing really new is brought to the table.

In conclusion, this is a really fun game which will provide you with many hours of content - after getting the game to 100% completion myself, I had racked up 75 hours of gametime. If you have a Switch, you should get this game - don't just beat the story though, as this game is worth getting to 100% completion. It's definitely a worthy entry to the Super Mario franchise.

8/10 - Incredible graphics, unforgettable music, fun gameplay and a good story - with some aspects leaving something to be desired, however.

Odyssey looks like a straight successor to the Mario 64 and Sunshine line of sandbox 3D Marios, but it is much more than that. Naturally, it evokes, honors, and is sometimes directly inspired by the games that came before it in its characters, music, and mechanics. But it also has new things to say as well, like fusing classic-style 2D gameplay with the 3D world and using a completely new possession mechanic to add constant variety to Mario’s abilities and exploits.

That possession power, embodied by Mario’s new sidekick/headwear Cappy, is Odyssey’s big new idea. In keeping with Nintendo’s decades-long tradition of charmingly nonsensical storylines, he’s a hat with a soul, and he’s teamed up with Mario in order to rescue his sister Tiara who… wait for it... has been kidnapped by Bowser along with Princess Peach. (I said it was charming, not original.) Cappy’s power allows you to possess many other characters by throwing Mario’s hat at them, which bizarrely slurps Mario’s physical body inside of the enemy and gives you full control over their powers. Cappy’s also used as a jumping pad and a weapon, sparing Mario’s tuchus from an untold number of butt-stomps this time around (though you can still do that, if you wish). Many of the cleverest and most smile-inducing possessions are best left to be discovered for yourself, but whether it was thrashing about as a huge, realistic-looking T-rex in the prehistoric-themed Cascade Kingdom or becoming a lowly Goomba but then making a stack of Goombas 10-tall to win over a hard-to-impress Lady Goomba, Odyssey mixes up the gameplay in surprising ways in each of its 16-plus worlds. Throughout the entire campaign, you’re using new creatures in new, game-changing ways on a regular basis.

Odyssey’s inspired integration of 2D gameplay – complete with Super Mario Bros.-era 8-bit art – deserves special mention. Entering into a pixelated pipe in the 3D space transports you to a side-scrolling 2D challenge that takes place on the surface of an object in the world, almost like Link’s 2D transformation in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. Most of these sequences aren’t too long – I wished they were longer, in fact – but each blends pure, weapons-grade retro gameplay with numerous other callbacks while still mixing things up in ways they never appeared in those original games, such as flipping gravity or wrapping the 2D scene around the corner of a 3D object. They bend the rules so far they go beyond even the most ambitious creations we saw in Super Mario Maker. It’s also super fun seeing Mario’s new costumes get translated into the old 8-bit art style. My favorites include the aviator suit and the retro-colored builder outfit, for no other reason than them being fun looks for the veteran plumber, but you can also mix and match hats and outfits to your heart’s content.

Of all the disparate lands Mario visits in his Odyssey, the urban-themed Metro Kingdom is my favorite. We’ve never seen anything like its semi-realistic look of New Donk City in a Mario game before. Not only do its urban obstacles allow for some kinetic platforming – bouncing off of the hoods of cars and flinging yourself off of city poles, for instance – but tucked-away minigames like an RC car race and a jump-rope challenge are great diversions. All the while, the sheer artistic contrast between the city and Mario’s consistently cartoony look and proportions have already generated interesting discussions about who – or more specifically what – Mario actually is. (Was “plumber” just a euphemism for some kind of goblin all along?) The end of the New Donk City portion might, in fact, be the very peak of the pleasure that Odyssey delivers on a consistent basis. Its conclusion is a literal celebration that doubles as a figurative one; Odyssey is pure joy that seems to understand and relish that about itself. On that note, I strongly recommend playing on a TV whenever possible. It’s not that it plays poorly in handheld mode – it runs perfectly smoothly at 60 frames per second in either mode, although there are no touchscreen controls even in minigames where they’d have made sense. The drawback to playing on the go is that the tiny screen doesn’t do nearly as good a job of showing off the scope and detail of the characters and worlds, such as the funny faces Mario makes when performing certain actions and the tiny 8-bit icons hidden on some walls. (Toss Cappy at them to get a quick gold-coin reward!). Of course, it’s every bit as good a game in handheld mode.
Overall Super Mario Odyssey is a brilliant adventure and love letter to the series that made Nintendo a household name.

But a few problems keep this game from being the perfect mario game, the 1st being the story because it was extremely short and someone on discord told me that he completed it in 11 hours compare that to breath of the wild which was a never ending phenomenon and another problem with the story is the ending you had peach abandon you in the moon after you worked so hard to save her from bowser. My 2nd problem of the game are some of kingdoms and im not saying that the kingdoms are bad or anything i had lots of fun roaming around them but some kingdoms were rushed and some kingdoms such as the dark and darker side had no reason to be in the game and just made the game more tiring. My final problem is after you took forever to get all the power moons they give peach's castle a giant hat, they could of done other things like for example extra kingdoms from past mario games like isle delfino or maybe add some galaxies from super mario galaxy 1 or 2 because odyssey was targeted towards hardcore mario fans but the problems aside this is by far one of the best mario games i ever played and id recommend this to you if you love the series Expand

I was worried about this game being too easy, and while the main game (going from the start to the end of the story) is very very easy the secrets and everything make it a little hard! So I believe you'll have fun regardless!

I never experienced the older Mario games, as this is my second 3-D single player Mario platformer. However, being a Game Historian, I have noticed the combination of new ideas, controls, and advanced movement with nostalgic bosses and gameplay, a feat achieved by many of the newer Triple A titles on the Switch. The persistence of the spirit of the old games continues to live on.

It's a return to the sandbox style Mario games like 64 and Sunshine, where you get to explore many worlds while making use of Mario's diverse set of moves and abilities to overcome any platforming obstacle in your way. The game looks absolutely gorgeous and runs smoothly, whether you play the game docked or in handheld mode. The soundtrack and overall game feel are also up to Nintendo's usual high standard of polish.
That said, I don't share the sentiment of Mario Odyssey being the best 3D Mario game. I think it's honestly one of the weaker ones for several reasons:

    1) The controls are quite weird. It's not like they're dysfunctional, it's rather that they are a bit underutilized. Mario Odyssey essentially only makes use of 3 buttons. A jump button, a button that lets you throw cappy and the ground pound. Each of these functions is for some reason tied to multiple buttons, which deprives the game of having a more fluid control scheme. Whereas Mario 64 lets you dive with just the press of a button, Odyssey makes you combine the attack and ground pound buttons, which just feels unnecessarily clunky, especially when you want to swim faster under water. This game also felt the need to lock a huge amount of moves behind motion controls (which are absolutely terrible in handheld mode and very uncomfortable for anyone who doesn't play with the joycons separately). This could've easily been solved by utilizing the buttons of your controller more efficiently.

    2) It's way too easy. And I don't mean to be condescending by using this cookie-cutter criticism that always gets thrown around. I don't really play single player games to have difficulty, that's what multiplayer games are there for. I do think that Odyssey took it a bit too far though. Mario games are usually a comfortable ride, but get really hard after you're done with the main game. Odyssey never gets to that harder point. The last challenge level of the game was something that I breezed through without dying once....maybe it's because Mario can cover huge distances by diving into your cap in midair and maybe it's because I played Mario 3D World a few months prior, where the last level took an eternity to beat because the platforming challenges couldn't be bypassed so easliy.

3)The Worlds and exploration. Too many worlds are way too small. Especially the cloud kingdom and the one you fought the dragon in. On top of that, the exploration is rather tedious, especially in the endgame. Anyone who enjoys to literally kick every stone and check out the entire outer edge of each world will love this aspect, but everyone else will probably end up getting quite bored because the worlds all have very unoriginal filler content. ''Go carry 4 acorns across the entire map and wait for a moon to come out // race against these koopas twice // catch those bunnies again // take the dog for a walk and hope that he finds a moon etc''. And I know that in 3D collectathons, the main collectible is there to give the player a sense of progress, while also unlocking more stuff as the game goes on...but Mario Odyssey stops rewarding the player way too soon, so collecting the remaining moons in the endgame turns into quite the chore. The only moons that were constantly fun to get, where the ones inside these self-contained challenge rooms. That's where all the good level-design resides in. Everything that has to do with exploring the worlds itself is very lackluster however, since all you do is just run around...and that's sadly not even an exaggeration.

I've collected 887 moons in my first file and I often attempted speedruns of the game. Anyone who has a switch should get this game. It didn't get anywhere close to reaching its potential, but it's still a great time for anyone who doesn't necessarily wants to 100% the game.

Super Mario Odyssey had a lot of potential but squandered some of it. Like Breath of the Wild, this one falls short of its own franchise. The controls in Mario Odyssey are not as tight as they should be in a Mario game, and they tried to shoehorn in motion controls yet again. Odyssey has very finnicky controls for a Mario game... This makes the game annoying at times.

Like Breath of the Wild, Mario Odyssey feels watered down and generic compared to the rest of its own franchise. Its worlds have disparate art styles that make the game feel incohesive. There is a lack of proper platforming, which has instead been replaced by running around large levels more than jumping. Often times the player will get moons much too frequently, which makes them feel much less rewarding than power stars in past games.

There are a few mini games, but they are not good. The Volleyball and Jump-rope mini games are more chore than fun, particularly when it comes to getting the harder of the two moons locked behind each mini game.

Some of the challenge levels in Dark Side and Darker Side are poorly designed. Looking at you, Breakdown Road (aka unadulterated BS). Most are lazy copy/paste jobs of earlier levels with some form of artificial difficulty thrown on top to do the designer's job for him. Some of the ridiculous challenge levels can be helped with the game’s assist mode when they are too annoying or too much of a chore to do legitimately. However, some of these levels are poorly designed in an unintelligent way that makes assist mode useless. I never use assist modes unless the game really forces the issue, but at least they designed it properly so that when you beat something with assist mode on, it still actually counts as beating it.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is sadly a bit lackluster compared to some of its great predecessors like Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Mario 64 and the Mario Galaxy games.

Odyssey is a great game. You will have a good time playing it, if you like platformers. But I can't stop feeling somethings about Mario games. It is a franchise full of stereoypes. It does something really great while completely ignoring others. And it is the franchise that better shows you what Nintendo is. They are never really designing a videogame for a specific audience. They are doing it for everyone. While that shouldn't be a bad thing, it just is. They make a very nice game for everyone, that at the same time feels like it is not enough for someone.
This was the first time I felt I'm not into Mario that much anymore. So I guess this game is not that great. It still is great, but I wouldn't mind if I had not played it. Still give it a 9, because it it is very good for what it is and if you like platformers you're still in for the best the genre has to offer. At least in terms of mechanics and charm. I just think Mario needs to be more and this game should have had more to it. I wanted to smile or laugh at what was going on, but I just couldn't. I've played worse games that made me laugh more. I am a bit tired of pretending I want to enjoy more of a game just because it's a Nintendo game. Odyssey is full of filler content. And people praise it for having a whole game after you finish it. That is not what happens... at all. You just get more moons and 2 more kingdoms that are just bad excuses to repeated content, mostly. If Nintendo was not a money-sucking company maybe I wouldn't mind so much. But as it is, while you can play a great game such as this one, you shouldn't be praising it as much. Nintendo doesn't invest in powerful hardware because people don't want it as they say. They do it so they can make more money with the consoles they sell. This game made me feel that more than ever. Props to Sony. They make money, but not trying to rip us off as much, while still delivering great imaginative new games and IPs. I kinda regret buying a Switch instead of a PS4, even though Zelda was worth it, kind of. Still. I don't like Nintendo anymore, just some of their games, and this game is the perfect sum of what they are, even if everyone is blinded because they did something different like Breath of the Wild...

Once you go forward on the game, you unlock a few things here and there from previous levels and therefore there is plenty more to do after beating the game. It's a must-have for any Switch owner!

Super Mario Odyssey has exceeded all of my expectations and kept me busy for a long time. Even after the story, there was still enough in the game to keep me playing for weeks. The game has the typical Mario story of Mario trying to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, but the fact that Bowser steals her to marry her is a nice twist and gives his actions throughout the game more purpose. The game has the typical Mario story of Mario trying to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser, but the fact that Bowser steals her to marry her is a nice twist and gives his actions throughout the game more purpose. In terms of gameplay, the game reminds me a lot of The Legend of Zelda: there are tons of puzzles and challenging fights that even experienced gamers may have trouble getting through. What makes Odyssey stand out from other Mario games is that it is completely open-world and you don't spend the entire game going level to level. You have to figure out where to go and how to get there, and it's not always obvious. The other main thing that separates Odyssey from previous titles is the map. There are so many different worlds, each with decently large maps. Also, each world has a store with exclusive souvenirs to decorate the Odyssey. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece and I would highly recommend it.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way.
