    This game was by far the worst Mario game I have ever played, the game was a huge disappointment and did not live up to the hype at all. The game tries to innovate but ends up being a lackluster experience, why couldn't Mario punch and kick like you could in knack 2? If Nintendo wanted to innovate, they should have followed in knack's footsteps. Why couldn't there be a first-person shooter mode where you could capture an army man and use his gun to shoot enemies? And New Donk City was a huge disappointment. Nintendo should have gone the extra mile to make Mario be able to capture every single "New Donker" and use each of their unique abilities. The whole game just feels like a copy of Galaxy when you think about it. Cappy is just a less innovative version of Luma. Very disappointed, will be selling back to GameStop. Expand

    An awful camera, forced motion controls, some sudden loss in graphical quality, miniscule worlds, very low difficulty and a gameplay gimmick that wears thin far too quickly are just the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps the most tragic error though is how nannying the experience is.

    Collecting a Shine Sprite, or Power Star in previous titles felt highly rewarding because it signifies the end of a challenging gauntlet of platforming variety. In Odyssey, Moons are absolutely everywhere, and unlike, for example, the Shrines in Breath of the Wild, there are simply too many Moons with little gaps between them. Positive reinforcement is one thing, but forcing it every few seconds is a trick that the average player will quickly see through.

    Super Mario Galaxy 2 can rest easy - SMO in no way betters upon its prequels and should be avoided unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, and can look past the many flaws

    that game feels like a total knock off of Sonic adventures 1 and 2 cause it is and some of the gameplay feels like it ripped off Sonic adventure as well. I’m surprised that those so called critics have not noticed about it. And a living hat, I’ve never seen anything so dumb in a video game. that game deserves a lower ranking than what it’s received.

It isn't like 64, Sunshine, or the Galaxy games, but I'll elaborate to avoid being called nostalgia-blind. This game has few exciting or challenging platforming sections, and the missions aren't very fun. It just lacks the personality that the previous games had. Moons are very easy to get, often involving simple tasks such as groundpounding a spot on the ground (there are only a few moons that are like this). Other moons require things like collecting a series of music notes, opening random treasure chests, or making female goombas fall in love with you. You can just do a bunch of those tasks until you get to Bowser. You can go into a world that has a huge problem on their hands, do some random stuff to get moons, and then say "OK bye, deal with it yourself". One thing I see a lot of content creators praising the game for is attention to detail, like how there are three different ways to enter the Odyssey or some small aesthetic things. Things like this are good to have in games, but I largely prefer greater aspects of the game. Another thing I want to mention, and this isn't going to affect the score I give the game, is that Mario's voice clip for throwing Cappy is extremely irritating. One thing I will give this game credit for is the movement. It is very fun to move around in this game and while Mario is still missing some moves such as diving, spinning, and punching, the moveset is completely okay and I'm glad the developers didn't make the game easier than it already is by adding more moves. The game's soundtrack is okay. I honestly can't find many pieces that I find particularly good, although there are some. Especially after playing Galaxy, I did expect more from Odyssey's soundtrack. Most pieces are just OK. Overall, this game didn't live up to the hype. It's pretty short and, like I mentioned earlier, lacks personality. I can't see anyone in the future talking about this game and saying things like "I could never beat this section", "this part was super annoying", or "this character was really funny". It's not that I necessarily want a game to have bad game design or rage-worthy sections, just that I want it to be memorable. Sometimes annoying things like that help it and in the end make good memories. Otherwise, just make characters with more personality, or give more variety in its objectives. Super Mario 64, Sunshine, Galaxy, and Galaxy 2 all had things like this: unique objectives, variety, annoying levels etc., and those games have produced many fond memories: the victory of finally clearing a hard section, the laughs that some characters got out of me and others, and the fun of experiencing new types pf gameplay throughout the game. I think I've said enough at this point. The Galaxy games are great, and Odyssey isn't. Expand

    This game is the most overrated childish nonsense I have ever played in my entire life, from my gaming beginnings with NES and PS1 all the way to Switch and PS4. Mario Odyssey is so overrated it is a symbol of how hollow this industry has become.

    How on Earth can any reviewer give this anything higher than 7? It makes no sense. This game is only perceived as good because it is a Mario game. You take Mario out of the equation and any person with more than two brain cells will tell you that this game is mediocre at best. It has the worst level design I have ever seen in a platformer, but also the ugliest. This game is ugly as hell. The graphics are not blatantly bad, but its design and style lack so much originality that it is very sad to witness. The enemies are also designed with laziness. Heck, the entire game is lazy; it's as if they didnt want to make any effort and decided to put the first designs that popped into their minds whilst using rehashed and cheap ideas from the past.

    Why does this happen? why do reviewers lack attitude and respect towards their readers? how is it possible that such a mediocre experience receives accolades just because of the franchise it represents? 97 on Metacritic? Is the gaming world gone idiotic?

    The main issue here isn't that the game is bad and the reviewers are catering to nostalgia-driven products, nor is the fact that the game never ever justifies a full AAA purchase, but truly the problem here is that these near perfect scores speak terribly of this industry and robs other properties, those that really make an effort, from the limelight that is always reserved for these nostalgic franchises. A concurrent 10/10 on both IGN and GameSpot? that is not only absurd, but also disrespectful and irresponsible. All the games that have received 10/10 on both websites have proven to be amazing, regardless of how much people like them or not. But this? this is garbage compared to any 9/10 game, imagine when compared to a combined 10/10. Then what is the point of these scores? What is the point on waiting for these so called promising games that can offer us wonders when such garbage receives the same score? what was the point on being amazed by the scores of Metal Gear Solid or Zelda or Chrono? What have I been playing all these years?

    I believe that if this childish garbage of Mario Odyssey receives such scores, then I guess VIDEOGAMES ARE NOT ART. If this is the highest standard in gaming, then there is no hope for this medium ever being anything other than a hobby for toddlers. Shame on you IGN and shame on you GameSpot and shame to all the reviewers who are so blinded by past experiences that they lie to their readers into spending full price for something that shouldnt even cost half price. I paid more than EUR 50 for this crapfest of a videogame and honestly I dont even know how I can trust any review ever again. This is the worst experience I have ever had in my life regarding videogame and their respective scores. Reviews are opinions? NOPE. Reviews are analytical essays that, influenced by opinion and personality (but not driven by them), produce an objective valuation of a product. Objectively speaking Odyssey is nothing but a disparate toddler set of minigames. I honestly will never ever buy a Mario game in my life again. I really dont see how any human being with a brain can consider this a game with perfect scores. I have lost a ton of faith on videogame with this experience, and you have no idea how disappointing that is. Thankfully, I liked BotW, but without it I see less reasons to buy a Switch. I love my Switch, but considering that these two games were two important reasons to justify the console's purchase, now I have to say one of them is a disappointing and biased crapfest.

    My last Mario game was Super Mario 64. I am generally a PS gamer. I had PS1, 2, 3, 4 and will be getting the 5. Still, I got a Switch because I know it is a great system. As a person who doesnt normally play platformers or Mario games, I believe I see this game for what it is: a videogame, not a Mario product. As a videogame, it fails colossaly to justify its scores. Most importantly, as a Mario product it only shows how sadly biased our industry is when it comes to franchises of historic appeal. Mario and Pokemon are clear evidence of how reviewers dont see the videogame behind the product and are marred by their nostalgia. Utterly flabbergasted in the saddest of ways. Shame and you, biased reviewers. In the future, reviewing should be regulated so that these websites that fool consumers could at least take their words back and think twice when considering a review again.

    As a former big fan of the old super Mario games, I’m so disappointed about this one. Guess they kinda messed up with this one, or maybe it’s just me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a kids game. I don't say that because it's cartoonish or anything. It rewards you for literally everything you do. I would have accepted the game if the main quest was easy if the post game was easy, but no. The post game is easier than the main quest. That has to be some kind of joke. Not even the final level was that hard. There were only a few times I genuinely had fun which were the 8-bit gravity shrine in the Mushroom Kingdom and when you get to be Bowser. Other than those, the game is just constant rewards. If you're a kid and you have never played a Mario, this game was designed for you, but if you're a hardcore Mario fan like me, this game wasn't made for you. Expand

    The visuals are good, not great. The mechanics haven't changed from Mario 64 which is why it didn't receive a 0 from me. This game is great for children but look elsewhere for any form of a challenge that doesn't involve mindlessly collecting oddly shaped purple coins or moons. Unfortunately, this is simply a paint-by-numbers, unimpressive participation trophy.

Nintendo has set the bar too high when it comes to quality on Mario games, that's why this 5 star out of 10 game is a 1 star compared to titles like Super mario 3d world or super mario galaxy. The game feels empty most of the time, lacking enemies and things to do. the puzzles are so obvious and tedious instead of fun. after playing the first level you have nothing different to see game-play wise. even the boss fights which are the most impressive graphically speaking, left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. mario games are known for their progressive difficulty and fun factor, we all know what a Mario game will be about before it comes out, but it's the creativity and wit of the designers that always keeps me coming back for more, they know how to make a repetitive title fun, and addictive. it is definitely not the case with this title. it's bland and repetitive, it's an empty sandbox without creativity. the worse mario platform adventure game i played since super mario bros 2. I've been playing Super Mario games since the NES, and this is hands down the worst Super Mario game to date.

    Awful, imprecise controls; Bad Camera; Boring, uninspired gameplay.

    There isn't much fun in walking around the exact same area for hours looking for some moons. The boss fights are just typical boss fights. If you aren't a child or buying this for your child, stay away. Get Super Mario Maker 2.

    Super Mario Odysssy is a game about collecting moons throughout expansive worlds to move on to the next objective. With a total of 999 moons in the game, you will always be able to meet whatever threshold the game throws at you. Moons aren't hard to get either, and that's the problem with Mario Odyssey: there's no real challenge. If you want to 100% the game, why bother when you can purchase as many moons as you please, especially with coins at every turn in the game? When you die, why do you lose your coins instead of a lives system that requires you to look for 1-UPs separately, getting rid of a side challenge that prompts players to avoid 'game over' screens? And why am I just walking around mindlessly until I feel my controller rumble? And if you don't know what to do, you'll do the only thing you can do: just throw cappy at things. The only reason I give this game 1/10 is because the music is spot on, and the graphics are carefully polished, all except for the grass, which is literally a photo taken from real life and slapped on the ground. Now, given how this has single-handedly ruined the Mario franchise for gamers like me, this abomination literally doesn't deserve ANY sort of forgiveness WHATSOEVER, much less empathy or love. Essentially just a gloomy, depressing shadow of what Mario once was.

    Besides the obvious, such as the Capture and Power Moon innovations, there's literally NO other redeeming values of this title. It is essentially just a Super Mario 64 / Sunshine clone with its signature mechanic replaced with its Capture mechanic, and nothing much else more, if any at all, and essentially just a shadow of what was originally Mario. And I'm speaking in at-best terms here. At worst, it not only possesses those same qualities, it goes well beyond them; it ruins everything we've come to know about Mario, and just depicts them, Mario, Peach, and Bowser, in particular, as nothing more than gross, immature beings only fighting for a Princess's heart, all while the Princess herself shows no intention of living a meaningful life, or any sort of life, for that matter, other than being the head honcho of her own castle with Toads that essentially Do Absolutely Nothing other than just general craziness. Not the heroes we've imagined as warrior against dragon saving princess, but rather, two immature, mindless lovers, after an airheaded Princess, who all three often if not always come off as rude, if not mean and ugly. Disgusting.

    When it came to thoughts in moments in my life such as Peach rejecting a proposal of Mario's, or Mario getting upset about a whole usual Princess kidnapping situation, what I was never expecting - was for this game to leave a deep wound in my heart deep inside my body and soul, and still give me excruciating pain to this day.

    The sheer, overwhelming amount of pain, that had come from this wound in my heart, still hurts today, and Super Mario Odyssey brought along this tragic injury. It's an absolutely terrible, complete, betrayal of what Mario used to be, and trust me, especially with the comics to compliment it, it CLEARLY shows.

    This really just goes to show how deep a hole Nintendo's gotten themselves into, but, to be fair, it's not really Nintendo's fault that this game has scarred gamers' hearts like mine, at least not entirely or directly. If we had to blame anyone, it would be the Nintendo fanbase, and the gaming fanbase in general.

    The sheer amount of unwillingness to accept, let alone embrace, innovation and change in gaming and technology in general, really, especially by fanbases, even back in 2017, had to be quite overwhelming, and this is why Nintendo is struggling these days, while games, such as COD and pretty much any Battle Royale out there, have no problem with money and success. But in fact, this statement, if anything, would only be more relevant today, and one can only suspect it's starting to take its toll on video games and even Nintendo nowadays.

    I do remember when I first saw that this game had lost its ranking in the User Score section of Universal acclaim, having been demoted to Generally favorable reviews, and although normally I wouldn't really state that, especially given it's only a 0.1 point decrease, only just putting it shy of Universal acclaim, this rating is in fact WELL deserved for a title that is less than nothing more than a generic 3D Mario Sandbox game with its signature mechanic being Captures, one that shoves a tragic reality in our face NONE of us should have to put up with, much less get used to.

    STOP. We've had enough of this. Mario wasn't just built on mechanics, controls, and gameplay. It was built to have THOSE be the core of Mario that would pave the way for more interesting stories, plot, and lore - and ironically, more innovative mechanics, controls, and gameplay, in return.

    Mechanics, controls, and gameplay are the core of the Mario franchise, not simply Mario ITSELF as a whole.

    While I normally wouldn't ask this, given this is generally frowned upon by the public, I'm asking you: it would be nice for you to mark this review as Helpful to show your support, that we're not putting up with this chaos anymore, and it's time for us to stand up to all this. Of course, you don't have to mark it as helpful for that specific reason, in fact, you don't have to mark it as helpful at all, as per usual; I'm just giving you a nice recommendation here. I'm certainly not making you, of course.

    In short, I'm swearing off playing this game ever again. It's not only the most depressing Mario game I've ever played in my life, it's also undoubtedly the WORST Mario game I've ever played - heck, even the worst Mario game after that I can and would DEFINITELY enjoy, even with all it's shortcomings. Thank you so much for listening.

    I 100 % it and here are some of my problems.
    1. controls are not perfect, to get perfect controls you need to buy the 60 $ Pro controller. if you have not bought the Pro controller the controls are very clunky.
    2. The game is just to short.
    3. Worlds are boring

    This game is complete TRASH. Exploration is bland, everything is so boring. BUT that's not the worst part, the 2D sections can go into a fire and BURN. You have to use a thumb stick, dose Nintendo think it's to hard to Switch to your D pad for the 2D sections? Than WHY can you use it in the menu? It just makes no sense. WHY would Nintendo do this?

    The problems of that game being that it is:
    -Easy, but I mean TOO EASY, even a 3 years old would be able to complete it. Mario Galaxy was aimed at a young audience, but atleast it was a bit challenging, I don't say no to such easy difficulty, but give us the possibility to choose for a higher difficulty for the a little more "extreme" players;
    -Bland and empty, the level design is so awful and honestly, it hurts me to say that but even another mediocre Sonic game known as Sonic Forces had a better level design. Well, the bad level design is especially in the overworld, when you enter one special stage it gets a little better, but that's not saying much;
    -The story, no comment it's just bad;
    -The music is inexistant;
    -Open World/Collectathon don't mix well with platformers. I think that many can agree that the base idea was bad, Zelda BOTW was a lot less hated because the base idea wasn't awful. Zelda BOTW is using the Dark Souls formula and is beautiful, making up for an excellent open world. Mario Odyssey, looks, feels and pretty is boring, empty and soulless. The team working for Mario Odyssey clearly have never done a single open world/sandbox/collectathon before and this is where comes the incompetency;
    -It is full of nostalgia and that's pretty much why it gets much praise, honestly it doesn't make it bad, but I wanted to point it out;
    -No charm, at all;
    -Overall boring: See points stated before;

    I'm also expecting some sort of censorship on Metacritic, especially considering that there are 223 negative ratings for 16 negative reviews, while there are 89 mixed ratings for 49 mixed reviews. I might be paranoid, but if my review happen to disappear, hopefully you will remember it.
    And please guys, understand that this game is not as good as you make it look like, again I didn't go in dept with my review, but many other people did successfully tell you what was wrong with it.
    Honestly this game is not a proper sequel to SM64, the DS version of the game was more of a sequel to be entirely honest.

    Gameplay:
    The puzzles on each level are very easy. You don't feel smart for solving them and there is little to no feeling of joy after completing them. However the game is still a "challenge" due to the controls being so badly designed in this game. More often than not Mario runs in the wrong direction, jumps late, or falls off edges. The way he moves have an acceleration that is way off for a feeling of controll and arcade. The camera makes you loose depth and often take control and force you to look in a direction where it's not really necessary and is in sabotages more than it helps.

    Graphics and visuals:
    The graphics is the best thing about this game. They are very nice and good looking. Every level looked unique and has many characters. Animations are nothing short of perfect. Vfx is awesome and 3D models are of quality. Simply very well done and beautiful.

    Conclusion:
    Over all this is a game worth playing if you don't have anything else to play. But it's a backwards designed game, where it's being more frustrating to play than it is challenging your intellect as a player. The hard part is not marios mission, it's to make him do what you want. But while struggling you'll see very polished visuals.

    And don't go finding this not helpful. People only like this game because it is Mario. If Kirby did a game like this, it would immediately be panned by critics. However, just because the name "Mario" is stamped onto the product it becomes an immediate 10/10 by any critic or user.

    And especially do NOT trust Metro GameCentral. They gave Super Mario Run a higher score than every Kirby game except for Mass Attack.
    I would trust a Hayley Atwell or Anya Taylor-Joy source like PCMag, Guardian, Gamespot, Video Chums, Screen Rant, IGN, CGM, Gaming Trend, Shacknews, My Nintendo News, VOOKS, and Destructoid, but Metro GameCentral is a racist or a Natalie Portman / Samantha Kelly, like Game Rant, God is a Geek, Slant Magazine, Games.cz, Twinfinite, Gamezebo, AusGamers, Telegraph, leetl1, livelovelaugh22, Polygon, Chaser the Ultimate Gamer, T3, Goron Dad, and VentureBeat.

    Game was too short and lackluster I really didn't enjoy my time with it as it was so short on content and even with dark and darker side of the moon it all felt really boring to me and overall uninteresting. Overhyped and overrated game in my honest opinion

    While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

    The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

    Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
