    First 10 hrs Odyssey is amazing with newly capture mechanic, sleeping T-rex, Ton of secret collectable moons. After 20 hours game is repetitive as hell. However, I could not stop collecting all the **** moons so I revised my score to the top-tier zone.

    The tight controls and open world game play makes Super Mario Odyssey a blast to play. On top of that, the graphics make this game gorgeous to look at. It's not as good as Galaxy 2, but it still a fun game from beginning to end.

    That's exactly what I thought before I played Super Mario Odyssey, but my god they've managed to breathe life back into this franchise. This was truly one of the most magical gaming experiences I've had in absolutely ages. It's just so incredibly well done, and it's great to see Nintendo really putting the time and care into a franchise like this. It's nice to be reminded or WHY they've been around for so long, and Super Mario Odyssey does just that. I wouldn't necessarily buy a Switch for it, but if you've already got one then you owe it to yourself to pick it up.

From a visual standpoint, this might be the most beautiful game I've ever played. I was constantly in awe at the incredible scenery and graphics, and had to stop and take screenshots every so often. The soundtrack is forgettable for the most part, but there are a few good tracks. Mulitplayer mode is disappointing. Playing as Cappy is boring for Player 2 and makes the game less intuitive for PLayer 1. In terms of difficulty, Odyssey isn't particularly difficult. There are no lives. Whenever you "die", you lose coins. There were a few tricky sections, but for the most part Odyssey wasn't extremely challenging. But that's not a bad thing at all. It wasn't too easy, or too difficult. Just right. Overall, Odyssey is an essential game to own if you have a Switch. Expand

I, instead, had low expectations because ever since 2010, I've felt the franchise had experienced a serious downfall, and my hype was on Breath of the Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors and Xenoblade 2. Instead of seeing a masterpiece in the trailers, I just saw a 5 or 6/10 game, but decided to give it the benefit of doubt, and not jump to immediate conclusions. Eventually, I got my hands on the Switch, and Super Mario Odyssey as well, and decided to give it a chance. And as you can see by this 8/10, I believe it's pretty clear that the game largely exceeded my initial expectations, but it still left something to be desired.

    Firstly, the game marks the first time Mario's cap serves any purpose besides being part of Mario's design. In this game, the cap is an entity named Cappy, who assists Mario on his journey to save Princess Peach, because Tiara (Cappy's sister) was taken by Bowser as well. Cappy can do multiple things in this game, such as allowing Mario to control other beings or acting as some sort of platform for Mario to extend his jumps. The game features several areas (kingdoms) to explore. In them you can collect Power Moons, which are required to advance in the main story. There's so many Power Moons in the game that it can take a long time to gather them all, depending on how much time you dedicate to the game. I also love the visuals in this game (best-looking Mario title I've played), as well as those segments where you become 2D Mario in segments that resemble the original Super Mario Bros. back in 1985. And it's also cool how you can customize your ship and get special outfits for Mario.

    However, I have several complaints. The story is pretty much the same as always. The difficulty is low for most of the time, except in some Bonus rooms or in Boss Rematches. It's cool how Mario can wear several types of costumes, but I wish they served any other purpose aside from allowing you to get access to some rooms, like having some sort of special ability, a strength and a weakness. The bosses are awesome-looking, but nearly all of them are underwhelming in dificulty, even Bowser himself. The music is very forgettable, except for maybe 2 or 3 tracks. The motion controls in the game feel so forced. Cappy may give a lot of gameplay options, but character-wise, he's the worst companion Mario has ever had. And Nintendo seems to have attempted to create a group of villains to replace the Koopalings, but they failed terribly: the Broodals. All of them are highly dislikeable, have extremely easy boss fights and are so generic and boring.

    Super Mario Odyssey is a good game to a certain extent. Sure, it exceeded my 5/10 expectations, but it still isn't the first game I'd recomend parents to give their son/daughter for Christmas with a Nintendo Switch. However, the game is fun, and you will probably enjoy it all the way.

The bosses were pretty easy in general, but I like the fact that you need to be smart to hit them a few times instead of easily hitting them 20 times. I completed the main story in about 8 hours (about 80% of purple coins and 261 moons). I was not looking everywhere, but I was looking. There is a power moon and/or a mini-game every 2-3 minutes if you look properly. I really like collectibles, but 999 power moons is just too much lol 250 would have been more than enough. I think I will replay it to try to gather 500 moons, but I am not sure yet. The music is good as usual, but nothing incredible. I personally played with the detached joy-con and I really enjoyed the experience!

    The problems of that game being that it is:
    -Easy, but I mean TOO EASY, even a 3 years old would be able to complete it. Mario Galaxy was aimed at a young audience, but atleast it was a bit challenging, I don't say no to such easy difficulty, but give us the possibility to choose for a higher difficulty for the a little more "extreme" players;
    -Bland and empty, the level design is so awful and honestly, it hurts me to say that but even another mediocre Sonic game known as Sonic Forces had a better level design. Well, the bad level design is especially in the overworld, when you enter one special stage it gets a little better, but that's not saying much;
    -The story, no comment it's just bad;
    -The music is inexistant;
    -Open World/Collectathon don't mix well with platformers. I think that many can agree that the base idea was bad, Zelda BOTW was a lot less hated because the base idea wasn't awful. Zelda BOTW is using the Dark Souls formula and is beautiful, making up for an excellent open world. Mario Odyssey, looks, feels and pretty is boring, empty and soulless. The team working for Mario Odyssey clearly have never done a single open world/sandbox/collectathon before and this is where comes the incompetency;
    -It is full of nostalgia and that's pretty much why it gets much praise, honestly it doesn't make it bad, but I wanted to point it out;
    -No charm, at all;
    -Overall boring: See points stated before;

    I'm also expecting some sort of censorship on Metacritic, especially considering that there are 223 negative ratings for 16 negative reviews, while there are 89 mixed ratings for 49 mixed reviews. I might be paranoid, but if my review happen to disappear, hopefully you will remember it.
    And please guys, understand that this game is not as good as you make it look like, again I didn't go in dept with my review, but many other people did successfully tell you what was wrong with it.
    Honestly this game is not a proper sequel to SM64, the DS version of the game was more of a sequel to be entirely honest.

Even when you finish the game there is so much to do. Such as revisiting kingdoms to collect more power moons and playing mini games. You can even customize Mario and the odyssey. They also make coins useful in this game. It can be used as currency to buy stuff and you loose 10 coins when you die. There are also purple coins that are unique to each stage which can be used to customize Mario and the odyssey. The most comparable came to Super Mario Odyssey is Super Mario Galaxy. The game takes so many traits from Galaxy, sunshine and 64. For example the health bar from Galaxy, cappy-less stages like flood-less stages from sunshine, and the fact that you can change into the old 64 Mario model in the mushroom kingdom is absolutely awesome. there are so many 64 references that you have to play to have the full experience. Level Design

    Almost every level in this game is gold. From sand kingdom's sprawling expanses to metro kingdom's hustle and bustle to luncheon kingdom's food -themed delight, every new kingdom holds a new suprise.

    Mechanics

    Cappy is a wonderful addition to the cast of this game, and as mario's companion, he has a lot of cool moves. my personal favorite is his ability to possess many of the game's enemies. controling timeless enemies like the Goomba, Bullet Bill and Chain Chomp is a blast, and many of the boss fights are desinged with this mechanic in mind.

    Story

    This game's story is pretty basic. Bowser has kidnapped Peach so that he can marry her, and Mario and Cappy have to stop him. over the course of the game he steals many wedding-related items from the kingdoms, such as a ring from the Sand Kingdom, a Dress from the Lake Kingdom, and so on.

    Conclusion

    I'd say this game is very, very good. the only problem that I have with it is that it's maybe a little too easy, and by that I mean the actual story part of the game is a little to easy, but that's about it. thanks for reading my review. bye!

    Now, later in the game, for those aiming to get all the moons, it gets much more challenging and fun - and sometimes frustrating, too. The good side of that game is that it offers a lot of post-game content and replay value, even for experienced platforming gamers. After 30 hours of playtime, I collected about 2/3 of all the moons and I'm still having a lot of fun with the game. I'm recommending this one for everyone, but most gamers will likely have to spend several hours before getting into the fun stuff.

With previous installments of 3D Mario games taking a more linear approach (Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World), Super Mario Odyssey charts a new, yet familiar, direction by encouraging players to explore large sandbox levels packed with collectibles. Not only are there Power Moons (the main collectible in the game) scattered everywhere in each level, there are also coins one can use to purchase clothing, and purple coins to purchase level specific materials. The new and main mechanic of the game is using Mario's hat and companion, Cappy, to take over enemies and utilize their abilities to further explore and discover each area. The game also allows players to play at their own pace and to control the extent of their exploration. If the player explores and takes risks they are rewarded with Power Moons, coins, and extra challenges. Don't expect anything new story-wise (this is a Mario game after all). The focus is the game play and level design; and they are both phenomenal. If you are a fan of Super Mario 64 and the several 3D platform collectible games that are like it, Super Mario Odyssey is cut from the same cloth and you will enjoy it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am just lost for words. How am I going to start this?

    I currently have 526 moons within 1 week of play purely because I couldn't put the game down. Infact, I am actually trying to slow down because I don't want it to end just yet.
    From my first moments of playing, it is evident to me and probably most of the people who have played this that Nintendo have gone all out with this to give us what we wanted.
    I personally haven't seen a game with this much excitement, attention to detail and personality in a very long time. Probably since Banjo-Kazooie on the N64. I am STILL discovering new areas and secrets! There is just a mindblowing amount of things to do in this game and I've had a smile on my face the whole time.
    In terms of longevity, if you are gathering moons just to unlock each world with the occasional extras you stumble across, you will most likely finish the main game with around 150-200 moons from memory, out of the massive total of 880 moons that are waiting to be found. That's not even a quarter of the game!

    The game is insanely fun and it holds a very even challenge while being fair, but also challenging the people who want to play further or to the end.
    The best part is, it's fresh throughout its entirety and looks stunning. You will always be wanting to explore and discover new things since every world has its own style and characteristics. Consistency is at an all time high as there is not a single point where the game starts to hit a downfall (cough yooka-laylee)

    If you have a switch, there is no reason to avoid getting Mario Odyssey. It will have you hooked for hours. I've marked it as a 10 since its a 9.8 from me. Literally the only thing that drops it from a perfect 10 is how easy it is to get a lot of the moons. In saying that, there are so many well hidden and challenging moons that make up for it. Since the game is incredibly fun, the easy factor doesn't really become a major issue.

    I'm calling it. This is my favourite 3D Mario game ever. Not Mario 64, Not Mario Sunshine, Not Mario Galaxy, but this. It has the DNA from every one of them.
    Eventhough all those games are fantastic as well, I personally think that this is the pinnacle now and also a key indicator for other developers to take notes on how a successful platformer should be.
    Much love Nintendo :)

    Not a ten due to:

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. In my opinion, it is the best Mario game of the franchise. All of the kingdoms are quite lovely and offers a great variety places to explore. It is what I consider to be the true sequel to Super Mario 64 from the Nintendo 64 era. Though, the main story is quite short and easy and can be completed in around an hour, that isn't what makes this game amazing. So if you're someone who doesn't like collectathons and trying to get every little thing then this game might not be for you, but for someone who loves to 100% games then this game will be perfect for you. There are over 850 moons in the game (maxing out at 999 moons including the ones you buy from the shops infinitely) and most kingdoms have regional coins which you collect to buy stickers or props for your Odyssey (usually 50 or 100 regional coins per kingdom). The game is NOT perfect in any way, and that's the only reason why it doesn't get a 10 from me. Just to say though, that is not a bad thing to say about a fantastic game like this, I want games that are not perfect already as it'll give room for improvement in the next lineup in Mario games. You will get a TON of hours out of this game, as I currently have around 700 moons and already have 52 hours into the game. Solid game, definitely worth the $60 you must pay for it. Expand

    A tribute to 64
    Super Mario 64, one of, if not the most loved 3D platformer of all time set the standards, along with Crash Bandicoot, of what this type of game should be. They set the bar high, and not many other titles have been able to reach it, let alone exceed it. Along with games such as the remastered Crash Bandicoot "N-Sane Trilogy" and "A Hat In Time" This particular 3D platform feels like a special tribute in honour of the 3D Platforming era of the mid-to-late 90s. It's smooth gameplay, remarkable graphics and it's cute and charming story makes this game what it is, and the possession cap ability adds an extra layer of gameplay. The hidden collectibles on each map makes every space used for something that isn't just platforming. Overall, this game is a beautiful, remarkable achievement in gaming history, and it's selling fast, as well as the console.

    OVERALL VERDICT:

    10/10 - Masterpiece

    It's amazing graphics, attention to detail and smooth, responsive controls makes this game shine through all the other titles of this year. It's beautiful soundtrack makes it stand out, and it is an essential game to buy in the new year.

I love this game so much First one thing people seem to bash on about is the difficulty,some say its the same old 2d game slapped into a 3d game.2 Words you are wrong first its a Mario game just look at Mario galaxy 2 and tell me that the final boss is even partly hard and I will face palm myself.Just tell me how you could compare that final boss to you freaking possessing a trex in the 2nd world thats about 11 or 12 kingdom's before the final boss the final boss,Some say its total old content.When in reality have you possessed a tank,yoshi,a trex,and Bowser!Or get chased by a trex in new donk city.Then later have a section where you go pixel mode and play jump man aka donkey kon the first game Mario aka Jumpman debuted in?In fact the only reason I consider giving it a 9 is because of the motion controls and thats it.Added Sarcastic remark The games totally easy its not like every single technique has its situation use which takes time to practice and the fact every transformation has a limit you have to go and find a way to make it useful example People who don't know how every transformation is useful someway:Oh look a useless goomba it can't jump high it's useless.People who do know how every transformation has a use:Hm a goomba what should I do.1 minute later finally I stacked 100 goomba now I can jump to the sky.Also side note for people who don't know you lose 10 coins and you can buy stuff with it in a non mario rpg game! The difficulty progression. As you get further into the game, the difficulty increases. Take the Cascade Kingdom and compare it to the Darker Side for example. You probably get it now.

    However! I should note that this is one of the few Mario games I would recommend not going for 100% unless you absolutely want to. Some Power Moons are almost impossible to find near the end of the game and you shouldn't have to ruin the experience with frustration right at the end.

    That being said, Mario Odyssey is the only reason you need to pick up a Nintendo Switch! It has the most replayability of any Mario game to date with no playthrough guaranteed to be the same. It's a blast to play and the graphics are amazing. That's really all you can ask for in a game. I'd rank it as my second favorite Mario game behind Mario Galaxy 2.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a while now I have felt that Mario games were getting stale. They were always fun though since the Galaxy games every new entry felt the same with little creativity. Well it seems as though Nintendo finally let out their crazy ideas at once for Super Mario Odyssey as it is the most creative and wacky Mario game in ten years. To start, Super Mario Odyssey is a game that is simply pure fun. It is the modern day Super Mario 64 with tons of collectibles, great music, and colorful environments. The main thing that makes Mario Odyssey great is how fun it is to control Mario. He has many of the moves from past games such as the triple jump, long jump, and dive. But the thing that really adds more to this installment is the new hat character Cappy. Cappy allows Mario to make insane jumps and control his enemies making exploring each Kingdom exciting and unique from one another. The game's main story is short which may be disappointing though I feel the game really gets going after the final boss as each area gets filled with more power moons to collect and even a post game kingdom longtime fans are sure to love. Some of the areas in this game are undoubtedly the best in the Mario series. The best kingdoms are the largest ones such as New Donk City, Steam Gardens, Tostarena, and Mount Volbono. Though some Kingdoms are lackluster due to their small size and lack of areas to explore. There is one kingdom in particular later in the game that looked really unique aesthetically though there weren't many things to do in it which I felt was a really missed opportunity. There are some areas in this game where I felt Nintendo could have done more with.Super Mario Odyssey is probably the first game that really shows of what the Switch can do. The power moons are quick enough to get individually for handheld play but also satsfying to collect for long play sessions on the TV.. I also believe playing with the detached Joy cons is the best way to enjoy the game as they allow quick movement and allow you to target your cap throw to enemies, objects and collectibles. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is the most fun Mario game since the Galaxy games. It returns to the sandbox style of Mario 64 which makes the game feel familiar but the surprises of the kingdoms and capture abilities gives a much needed breath of fresh are for a franchise that was starting to feel generic. Most kingdoms also have some very unique captures, which, unlike most games , are all fun( besides one of them which i'll not spoil). By the way, Mario's movement options are so fantastic (you can even beat the game without jumping!) and diverse that even in the late game when you're trying to collect the 800+ power moons it is still(mostly) fun. Also, 99% of this game's power moons are rewarding and feel really good to collect(besides 4 of them). This game ISN'T too easy: The main campaign won't be tough, I'll admit , but it's really fun, and go past that and you'll find some really tough-but-fair moments, which are equally as fun, and since the campaign isn't long, you won't have to wait much to get to the challenge( but if you try to complete
    this game,which the developers really make you want to, it won't take more than 70 hours). Super Mario Odyssey™ pleases every Super Mario™ fan( besides the Mario maker™ ones ):Galaxy, 3d World , 3d Land, 2d fans will have great pure-platforming sections and clear goals, 64 and Sunshine fans will have exploration and collect-a-thon gameplay( you can just skip the goals and have just as much fun), Mario Sports/Party Fans will have tons of (mostly) fun minigames. This game is just suited for any playstyle, and you'll have fun in any way you want to play, and anywhere, since this game is well-suited for short gameplay, due to the power moons , and for long sections, due to the huge kingdoms that don't make you quit them when you collect a mission, making it kinda of addicting,since you will originaly be looking for one goal and suddenly you'll find another moon,then another,then another...
    However,the game isn't flawless. The nowhere platforming gauntlets are really great in level design, but the least creative in the game, even compared to 3d Land or the New Super Mario Bros. series,but they are still fun.The parts where you don't have cappy are really annoying, and forced and unresponsive motion controls( which would have been OK in the days of the Wii ,but this is the Switch, and even when you're are clearly playing it in handheld mode or with the Pro Controller the game still shows tutorials( which is another problem, the game shows tutorials even when you are in the final kingdom,but not as frequent as something like Skyward Sword)of actions you can only do with the split joycon ,which turns it somewhat frustrating),and the Co-op mode feels really rushed and unpolished,so if you want to play with your friend, you should look elsewhere (even Mario Galaxy's is better).With that said,this game is really worth-buying,despite these negatives,and the campaign is aproximately the same length as this review.

    When this was first announced I can confidently say I had an incredible amount of faith in this game. As time passed and the switch was released, the hype continued, waiting to play the first 3d sandbox Mario game on the go. E3 only added to the hype with Nintendo's direct trailer, and announcement that the game would arrive in November. Here we are now, with a game of the year nomination on our hands. A real amazement to play. The game's opening doesn't take its time. Tutorials are fluently integrated into the beginning of the game. Introducing you to a wide variety of controls, that can fluctuate your playing style from simple to complex in a matter of button presses. With one of the most clean control schemes I have ever played a game with. Not only do the controls make the game a real charm, but the art style is one to remember. The HD graphics of the switch enable Mario's adventure to look incredible. From the waterfalls of the Cascade Kingdom, the bustling city of the metro kingdom, the tasty colors of the Luncheon Kingdom, to the rolling hills of the Mushroom Kingdom and more this game delivers an amazing presentation. Not only looking amazing no matter your location but introducing new characters and features that will hopefully become staples of Mario games to come. Only adding to the spectacular experience of the gameplay. With the already amazing controls the gameplay only makes them show even better. Your pace of playing through the game can differ so much based on where you go in the sprawling lands this game has to offer. Play through the game gathering as much moons as you can find. Or speed through, using specific hat tricks and jumps to hurry your way through the game to beat it as fast as possible. Moons (the games main item you need to find in order to progress) are scattered across every nook and cranny of every kingdom. Your means of finding them can range from simply finding a location. To playing mini levels within the worlds, which can be 2d or 3d. Or completing side quests for the residents and tourists of each location in order to choose your own path to completion. Giving a major boost in the replay value department. Not only that, but the game is crammed with features to 100 percent, and complete giving the gamer much more than the admittedly short story. After beating the game, you can unlock 3 new kingdoms (The Dark Side, Darker Side, and the Mushroom Kingdom) all with moons to find and levels to beat. With worlds gaining a massive overhaul of new moons. So your new worlds can feel new again as challenges are laid before you. With 880 moon to collect. 100 or 50 purple coins to collect in each kingdom to get in game rewards. Along with in game coins, the ones you know from other Mario games, being able to purchase a wide arrangement of outfits. Ranging from classing nostalgic clothing featured in your favorite games. To new and creative outfits, to, dressing Mario up in peaches wedding dress......
    In all seriousness, the amazing gameplay, art style, range of features, and swift controls. Create this amazement in gaming anybody with a switch should have, or is worth getting a switch for.

    Super Mario Odyssey is perhaps the greatest Mario game I've ever played. It's a must have for any switch owner, and if you don't have a switch, this should be the game that sets you over the edge to get one.

    First there are the superficial stuff, looks, sounds, smells, tastes etc.

    The visuals are so wonderfully stylized, ditching the "plastic" vibe from 3D world and Mario + Rabbids (which are still great in their own right) for a more realistic - yet still cartoon-y feel. There's so much polish and flair, yet it still remains technically and mechanically accurate. I don't have much more to say for this one, but just know that they're fantastic!

    The soundtrack is bar none the best in any Mario game to date, with just about every song perfectly matching it's environment, while being great as standalone songs too! The obvious highlight being Jump Up! Superstar, which has quickly become one of my favorite video game songs. And the sound design is as high quality as you would expect from a Nintendo game, with quite a few being taken from previous installments. Not that it's a bad thing, of course.

    The story is about what you'd expect from a Mario game. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and mainly only exists to tie up the whole experience, but that's okay! You don't play Mario games for the story, so I can't say that it was a disappointment. It's fine. I'd quicker say it was above average, than below.

    Then there are the Controls, which are by far the best in the series.

    Mario's main move-set controls so smoothly, with new moves like the roll - a great and satisfying way to get around quickly. Then there's the ground pound jump, which DID originate in 3D world, but given that games more linear structure, it wasn't particularly helpful. Now though, it's the easiest way to get the most out of your jump. Then there are returning moves, like the triple jump, which is the most forgiving to preform it's ever been, and the dive, which we'll talk more about later. The only casualty this time would be the side flip, which is a bit harder to do now that 8-directional movement is gone, but isn't much of a problem after the first hour or two.

    This, is the best new addition to Odyssey - Cappy. Cappy is like a cross between the punch from 64, F.L.U.D.D. from sunshine, and the luma from galaxy. You can throw him on the ground as an attack, or in the air as a course corrector, then use the aforementioned new and improved dive to jump onto Cappy, then throw him, and dive again. This simple move set opens up a HUGE range of possibilities, in fact there have already been discoveries of incredibly precise shortcuts, some intentional, some not.

    The motion controls are where things get a little bit controversial though. I personally think they were handled pretty well, not great, but just fine. Shaking the joy-con/pro controller allows you to roll faster, use a homing attack with Cappy, and all around play more efficiently; but at no point are you required to use them. The only problem is that shaking the entire system in handheld mode doesn't feel too great, and thus you always feel like your at a disadvantage when using said mode. Though unless you're doing a speed run, it really shouldn't be that big of a deal.

    Finally, the most important part, the gameplay.

    Mario Odyssey goes back to the style of 64 and Sunshine. Instead of going the galaxy route, where there are tons of levels, all being linear platforming challenges, containing a couple of stars, there are a lot fewer, open worlds, each containing quite a few of the games main collectibles, power moons. Dozens of these guys are scattered all across every kingdom, some you get for solving puzzles, some for exploration, and some for completing challenges.

    Now time for the main game-play "gimmick" of Odyssey, being the ability to capture enemies. It's amazing how they managed to make almost all of them feel so great to control. Each kingdom has it's own few capture-able enemies; they don't drag on with any of them either, they're always quickly moving on to the next one before the previous one gets stale. Throughout the game they make you use every capture in a plethora of unique and creative ways, forcing you to know the ins and outs of how each one works.

    In conclusion, Super Mario Odyssey is a blast from beginning to end. I'd have to give it a 9.8/10, but seeing as how I have to choose between a 9 and a 10, I opted for 10. While I don't think it deserves a 10 per-say, (but what game does?) giving it a mere 9 would be criminal. Go get this game right now.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Odyssey is a arguably the best 3d Mario game ever. It takes everything good from every Mario game and push it into one game. When i first played, i immediately got addicted to this game. I got so addicted that i finished the whole story in one day. And i realized how short this games main story is. And i think that's one problem with the game. It would had been nice to pic the amount of moons needed to get to the next kingdom. Sort of like a difficult level. But that is really a minor complain. My two absolute favorite moment in the game is after the final boss and the NDC festival. Those sorts of moments just makes you smile a lot. Expand

    It's a great game and I'm giving it a 10 to compensate for all the disruptive people who have voted 0 just to keep this game's score from overtaking their favorite's.

I will not harp on the similarities to Sonic Adventure 1, such as the Mystic Ruins, Station Square, emblems hidden throughout the overworld in hard to reach places, because I consider that to be a good thing and a completion of what the Sonic Adventure overworld could be in modern times. Taking inspiration from an amazing game is never a bad thing, and I consider this returning the favor from Sonic Lost World. My main issue is that there are no consequences and no serious driving force to keep me playing. Death results in loosing 10 coins, which is meaningless given that coins respawn when you die. I understand and respect that this was done in order to reduce stress so players that value hunting for everything and trying to go for 100% completion can do so without worrying about restarting the level. However, that fear and the sense of accomplishment once you do something dangerous and survive is why I like that style of extra content in the first place. The reason the green stars in Mario Galaxy 2 worked so well for me is because often times if you missed, you could die. They were hard enough to find so I may have had to do a level a few times to find them. To me, that was a rewarding experience. I don’t get the same feeling from finding the power moons until post-game, and even then, there is little pressure. The final areas are insanely difficult, and I respect that challenge a lot, but again, lack of lives made me always understand in the back of my mind that I could die as many times as I needed without consequence, and the pity box is still in effect from previous Mario games, although I’ll admit I’m not sure what it does this time because I never used it. The game does an amazing job of what it is trying to accomplish, and I do enjoy the game a lot when I remember to play it.
    The reason that games like Mario NES, Mario 3, World, 64 and sunshine are games that I can just sit down and replay for a while is that I do not win every time. If I try to play Mario 1-3 on their own without glitch abusing for 99 lives, I occasionally fail, and that brings me back to redeem myself after failure. Sunshine is similar in that right because after however long it has been, I still have not completed the game to 100% because I die, and there are consequences when that happens. After I 100% Odyssey, which I will, because it is a great game worthy of the time to complete it, I will probably not pick it up again for quite a few years, if ever. The feeling of tension and motivation is something that Classical Sonic did perfectly, the first few zones are easy and shouldn’t give you a problem, as to be friendly to new players. Then Labyrinth zone comes in and reminds you that your 15 lives can go away in an in instant. Many people find that especially considering you must start over from the beginning if you die enough, but for me, that’s the motivating factor behind playing the game over and over until I win. Zones like the Starlight Zone exist to give the player the calm moments to focus on collectables and get the Chaos Emeralds. Starlight zone is hard to die in and it’s such a memorable moment to me because it’s a welcome break from the panic attack that is Labyrinth zone, and the final area, where practically everything on the screen can kill you. Mario Odyssey has areas that are designed to be low stress down perfectly, and the sense of adventure is well done, but it is missing a proper Scrap Brain Zone, an area where you will die unless you do perfectly, and anything short of perfection means game over, and getting taunted. While that high pressure is often frustrating, Odyssey will never produce the feeling of winning on your last life, the determination forms the moment where it is do or die. I think a better way to accomplish what odyssey was trying, is to either have easy mode operate with the 10-coin system and hard mode have lives, or lives switch to the 10 coin system after the story concludes.

    Super Mario Odyssey is exactly what I been waiting for. Ever since Super Mario 64, no others in the 3D series have been the same for me. After seeing the credits rolling, thinking back of the level design, the music, how everything flows, the nostalgic feels throughout the game, and the fact there are A LOT of replay value (Have only collected 50% of the moons so far), I can safely say Super Mario Odyssey is the BEST 3D Mario ever created! Worth your time as you will get at least 30-40 hours story plus 20-40 hours after to try and collect everything. If you have been waiting on getting a Nintendo Switch, wait no more as this game alone is worth the investment. It was pretty comfortable playing on Handheld mode when on the road but defiantly is better playing on the big screen and with good speakers as all the music is orchestrated. Now if you excuses me, I need to go back and try to collect everything. Expand

    Super Mario Odyssey is not only the pinnacle of the Mario formula, but the pinnacle of platformers in general. Outstanding gameplay-wise, design-wise and soundtrack-wise, it's a must-play for any gamer.

    While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

    The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

    Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
