This is a masterpiece. If you ask me this is the greatest game Nintendo has ever made. The best 3D plat-former of all time. If you have a Switch and don't plan on getting this, sell the freaking Switch because this game is a must own.

Here is why. Mario feels perfect to control. There are so many options to move around massive, beautiful, and breathtaking locations like a colorful volcano made up food, a rusty greenhouse and deep scary forest controlled by friendly robots, the black and white cap kingdom, and even bower's castle is unique, having a Japanese/samurai theme. Mario moves perfectly, the controls are the best in any Mario game, and there is so much to see and do. Many mini games, like racing, playing volleyball, doing jump robe, racing tiny micro-machines, and so much more not counting the main collectible, moons. Like with Super Mario 64, you can collect the moons in (mostly) any order you choose. However this time Moons are much more common and you can collect them in many different unique ways like planting and watering seeds, completing an obstacle course, finding hidden treasure, getting a high enough score in a mini game, ground pounding in certain spots, solving a puzzle, using hint art, or even just finding them lying around randomly. However, this game's biggest feature is the capture mechanic. Instead of traditional power-ups, Mario can you his new companion Cappy to possess almost every enemy in the game to solve puzzles, defeat bosses, collect hidden moons, or even just for faster travel. Story missions are fun and varied, and you can even skip most of them if you so choose. This a speed runner's heaven, as there are so many tricks, secrets, and shortcuts to find and discover to shave seconds and make your run extra efficient. This is especially true with the amazing controls. If you are looking at getting into speed-running, this is the place to start. Super Mario Odyssey is a masterpiece beyond words, and if you have a Nintendo Switch it is a sin to not have this game in your library, physical or digital. Even if you somehow don't have a switch yet, this game alone should sell you on it. It sure did for me. Expand

The BEST Mario game ever! It mixes elements of the classic Mario 2D platform games, Mario 64 and the 'magical' vibes of the new ones, like Galaxy.

The games graphical style is varied and filled with whimsy, and the same can be said about the score. Almost everything about this game is pure perfection. Almost.
I only had one real gripe with my time with Odyssey. The role the motion controls play is far too prevalent. There is a setting to "turn off" motion controls but then you're advanced movement mechanics are essentially wiped out. I could very well be a bumbling idiot and just not be able to find button combinations for these mechanics, but, in my defence, those combinations should not be hard to find.
With all that said, Super Mario Odyssey is a milestone in modern gaming and will be revered for years to come. It is an instant classic.

Super Mario Odyessey is like Super Mario World's sister and Super Mario Land's brother. With the epic experience that Super Mario World brought, the addition of kingdoms from Super Mario Land, along with more enemies, and the 3D feel of Super Mario 64, this is a true masterpiece.

I personally have never liked 3D platformers and collectathons but SMO has the be the greatest one I've played yet. It has a ton of unique and very fantastic worlds that allow the most creative way of traversing the levels thanks to Cappy and helping you transform into the enemy's. This was a GOTY contender so you already now that this game is very high quality.

Super Mario Odyssey is literally my favorite game of all time. It is really the successor to Super Mario 64 in almost every aspect. Like really, it does a lot of things so well. I've just finished the game (100%) for the second time and it's just that good.

The story of this game is simple and straight to the point. It is very easy to follow and it's not just like your generic Mario game. Sure, Princess Peach got captured again, but this time it's different. I won't get to details because spoilers, and I want this review to be as helpful as possible. It may not be as good as Galaxy 1, but I do appreciate the amount of effort put into the story itself.

Throughout the game you will go through a lot of kingdoms that have never been explored in any Mario game until now. Every kingdom gets the sense of freedom, platforming, fun... just right. Cappy is the new ally which will help you throughout the game. And he is just perfect. If F.L.U.D.D. from Mario Sunshine was good, Cappy is just perfect. The amount of stuff you get to do with him is incredible. Some people say he's broken, and I don't agree with them because 1 important reason. If the game wasn't designed around all these things he can do, sure, he would be broken, but... The game IS designed around Cappy himself. There a lot of places that Cappy can go over, and the game lterally congratulates you for doing those amazing jumps. And the capture mechanic is just... perfect. It is literally the evolution of power-ups in older Mario games, and I love it. The main collectables here are power moons. there are over 800 of these. Some are easy to get, and some are well hidden. Also there are these exclusive purple coins per kingdom that with them you can buy outfits, and also the fact coins DO matter in this game. I swear, this game i sooooo different from any Mario game, that is probably why I consider it my favorite game of all time. The graphics are pretty nice to look at and the music... phenomenal.

Even though it's my fav game, it does have some flaws. The motion controls (that are incredibly well done btw) are very stiff to use in handheld mode, and also that you don't get a lot for 100% this game. So U reccomend you to 100% this game if you're a hardcore Mario fan or just simply a Completionist.

There are a lot of stuff I haven't talked about but you get the point. Super Mario Odyssey is a must play. It is soooo different it's just soooo good. Hope you all try it because, believe me, it's worth 60 bucks.

We all remember Super Mario 64, right? (Okay, probably not EVERYONE) Well, in that game, you had 120 Stars to collect. In Super Mario Odyssey, however, you have a whopping 999 MOONS TO COLLECT! That's 879 more Moons! In this game, collecting them doesn't feel like a chore! (to me, at least) Super Mario Odyssey is truly the best Mario game of 2017.

Super Mario Odyssey is a pretty amazing game. First off, it feel amazing to be able to play a brand new 3D Mario game in HD, I personally did not enjoy Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U because there was a lack of Nintendo Flair, a lack of a gimmick to set it apart from anything else we've seen before. However Nintendo did an amazing job getting back on track with their brand new sidekick: Cappy! Cappy was able to be used in a variety of different ways such as platforming and capturing enemies. Second, the BEAUTIFUL Soundtrack. While it doesn't surpass Super Mario Galaxy's Soundtrack (in my opinion) the Soundtrack is stellar, my favorites are Jump Up Superstar and Cascade Kingdom. My only criticism for the game is that there is not enough of a penalty for failure, while the base gamemode is Great, I wish they had a "Hardmode" where every time you died, you lost a life instead of 10 coins. Nintendo has set the bar too high when it comes to quality on Mario games, that's why this 5 star out of 10 game is a 1 star compared to titles like Super mario 3d world or super mario galaxy. The game feels empty most of the time, lacking enemies and things to do. the puzzles are so obvious and tedious instead of fun. after playing the first level you have nothing different to see game-play wise. even the boss fights which are the most impressive graphically speaking, left me with a bitter taste in my mouth. mario games are known for their progressive difficulty and fun factor, we all know what a Mario game will be about before it comes out, but it's the creativity and wit of the designers that always keeps me coming back for more, they know how to make a repetitive title fun, and addictive. it is definitely not the case with this title. it's bland and repetitive, it's an empty sandbox without creativity. the worse mario platform adventure game i played since super mario bros 2. In Odyssey you can control a cap that can be used to control enemies or a way to platform. Stars have been replaced with Moons and there are plenty to collect. Some being very simple to others being a bit more complex to get. The story is pretty basic Bowser takes Peach and you have to save her again like any Mario game. For this game the gameplay and exploration is what makes the game not the story. There are a variety of bosses that are unique. You will have to face the same bridals over and over as you progress through the story. The game is more enjoyable if you try to collect every shop coin and moon. That's were you will get the most out of this game. The last few levels will push your skills and be a bit harder than whats in most of the game. Music is pretty enjoyable and fits each world perfectly. I 100% recommend this game to anyone who has a switch. It can be a simple or complex platformer depending on what Moons you go for and has a joyful atmosphere surrounding it. Took me 85 hours to collect everything. Some helpful notes (or not):
    – As in every Mario's game, it's easy for newcomers but has deeper challenges for veterans.
    – It's not a game for casual players whose only played platform Mario's games. I've introduced the game for some friends and they got bored.
    – I don't know if it's good or bad, but, I thought the first stage in which you meets Cappy is a bit depressive, and not what I was expecting of a first stage in a Mario's game.
    – The visual design is stunning considering it's a Mario's game.
    – It has well designed nostalgic references and gameplay such as Mario's classic platform puzzles. Could have more, I think.
    – The song "Jump Up Super Star" is a hit!
    – I've played with my 8 and 10 year nephews. I've noticed that playing as Mario was a bit challenging for them, to control the camera disturbed them a lot during gameplay.
    – You can beat the game very fast (same as the previous Mario's games) but it definitely encourages you to get every purple coins and collectibles. To me, the replay factor is not that great.

I think it's a must play game for Nintendo Switch's owners

Super Mario Odyssey is extremely repetitive, easy, has a pitiful story, the environments are ugly, and the core mechanic with Cappy is no different than hitting a question mark brick. Problem is, people cannot look at this objectively and instead bad mouth whoever has the dissenting opinion. Super Mario Odyssey literally is looking for moons to power your ship to fly to the next location to look for more moons to power your ship, that’s it. It doesn’t even make finding moons a challenge, you literally turn a corner and there is one, you go to the next corner and there is another...it totally diminishes the value of finding a moon. All the bosses inbetween including the final boss are three head stomps to win, there is no challenge in that. This seems like this was rushed by Nintendo...it’s basically the Korok seed portion of Breath of the Wild with a Mario skin in a smaller environment. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Odyssey harks back to the days of Super Mario 64, one of the best 3D Mario games to date. Following it up with another great title, Odyssey sends the player on a journey across multiple kingdoms around the Mario universe to rescue Princess Peach and collect 999 Power Moons. (Moons replacing Stars)

    -------------
    Difficulty:

Super Mario Odyssey handles difficulty very well. For the most part, the areas you will see if getting minimal Power Moons to move on in the storyline are at a welcoming, warm difficulty. Most players could do them easily. The post-game gets a bit more tricky, with more elaborate and difficult challenges, puzzles, and secrets to find. The Darker Side being the hardest, a long level with no checkpoints that will test your skills.

Though the game is not without its simply frustrating elements. These two very specifically being the jump rope and volleyball minigames. The volleyball one is the most frustrating because it takes forever to get going, and once it does, it's incredibly fast-paced.

    ----------

    Graphics:

The graphics for Odyssey are simply amazing and well done. From living, vivid civilizations to stunning landscapes(both in playable areas and in the distance), this game truly has a great aesthetic. The character models are well made, thought and care put in to make them match their different kingdoms. This game and Breath of The Wild both set high standards for Switch games to come.

    ---------
    Mechanics:

Odyssey's new platforming mechanics allow for all sorts of new methods of scaling landscapes. Cappy is the biggest change, of course. Throwing Cappy, you can dive into him to go further and gain height, then repeat a second time in the air. This makes some tricky jumps much more plausible and adds a new layer of fun.

The Capture mechanic ties into Cappy. When you throw him at a specific enemy, you basically possess it and are able to use its abilities. For example, in icy levels there tend to be Goombas. Capture one, you will not slip on the ice, making navigation much easier. Captures are immensely fun and helpful in your quest to obtain all 999 Power Moons placed throughout the large, sprawling kingdoms.

    ---------
    Narrative:

Mario Odyssey has a good narrative backing it. The classic tale of Peach being kidnapped by Bowser, you save her at the end, she dumps Mario and Bowser at once - wait, huh? I personally loved that plot twist, adding some humour to the end of the game.

Before you can Capture Bowser to save the world and Peach, you must first get through Bowser's new cronies, the Broodals. These painfully easy to defeat bosses will be seen and fought multiple times throughout the journey. After completing the main story, you unlock the Dark Side of the moon, which is the home of the Broodals, evidenced by the hoard of bunnies all over the small area. you learn the Broodals are the wedding planners basically from the outset of the game when it is literally mentioned. They travel the various kingdoms with Bowser, stealing specific items for the wedding.

    -----------
    Game World:

This game has such beautiful areas! Each one is crafted with an exquisite attention to detail, Nintendo really outdoing themselves here. From the gorgeous sunsets of the Seaside Kingdom to the barren desert landscape of the Sand Kingdom, there are plenty of great things about the level and hub design. The most photo-worthy is by far the Seaside Kingdom, a pristine sunset on a beautiful waterbed with jets spurting water into a giant glass, the water sparkling in the sky. (Post-boss.)

    ----------
    Main Negatives:

First of all, the human models do really need work, the faces are quite blurry and feel outdated. Then there are the simply frustrating challenges I mentioned earlier, which don't offer much in the way of fun. Instead, they turn into a repetitive, boring minigame eating away at your time and energy.

    -----------
    Conclusion:

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best games available on the Switch right now. From its likeable characters to its gorgeous graphics(minus the human characters) to its impeccable level design utilizing its fresh mechanics, Odyssey is a must for Switch owners. If you're into platforming, that is. A LOT of it.

The game is filled with so much content, most of it is really easy, but there's a few hard extra parts just to justify and appease the people saying its too easy, which it honestly is. If you aren't into searching every last corner of an area, this game isn't for you, or at least you wont get the full enjoyment. Some of the moons are just ridiculous, like the one that requires you to kick a specific rock 50 times, with no indication it has a moon. This is what really brings the game down. If these ridiculous moons were removed this game would easily get a 9 or 9.5. The core game isn't deserving of a 10, as many people will say it is. The hype has created an unrealistic vision of the game and so many people are blinded to their favoritism and bias towards the game.

The game is fun, but a lot of the best parts are hidden and hard to access. Instead of providing a fun challenge to get the moons, a lot of them are just scrounging every little corner of a map to see if, for example, one was obtained by sitting on the right bench. The few that have genuinely engaging challenges are hidden even more and unless you want to 100% the game you wont get to experience most of them. If you aren't going to, you will still like the game, but you wont get much out of it,, but if you are intending of doing every little thing in the game, you will love it.

The real game starts when it ends.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Tl;Dr It's brilliant. If you want to get it, knock yourself out. I mean, yeah, it has been a bit broken by modding, but it's still a fun, enjoyable, exciting and sometimes frustrating experience.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead. Proceed with caution.
So, where do I even begin with this game?
Super Mario Odyssey is, by far, one of, if not the best games currently out on the Nintendo Switch. Retaining the same linear-open-world-style feel as Super Mario 64, Sunshine, and Galaxy 1 and 2, it more than improves on the format with a host of new game mechanics, a lot of stages and collectibles that'll have you reeling for hours, and one very horrible obstacle at the end. Well, I say horrible, but very difficult. I am, of course, referring to the Darker Side of the Moon, and not the regular Moon Kingdom, with its incredibly long course, incorporating everything the game has thrown at you once more. But, I'm losing track, and I'm going off on a tangent. The motion controls provided by the Switch's "Joy-Con" controllers also compliment the game well, with the throwing gestures feeling almost second-nature very quickly.
I mean, sure, the game has its flaws, such as broken online gameplay in the Balloon World and Koopa Freerunning minigames, with hyperspeed mods ruining the course leaderboards for Freerunning, and impossible-to-reach balloons in the Balloon World.
Overall, the game has a simple but exciting feel about it, and is definitely a must-buy for any Switch owners. If you enjoy a good open-world platformer with simple controls and new features that add a new layer to the game, then you are going to love Odyssey. Oh, and don't get me started on the soundtrack. Trust me, you are going to randomly start humming "Jump Up, Super Star" or "Break Free (Lead The Way)" at some point (not that that's necessarily a bad thing). Kate Higgins does an impressive job on vocals, and on voicing Pauline, who finally becomes a major character, as the mayor of New Donk City - the fictional city within the Metro Kingdom.

I would recommend this masterpiece for people who want to play an original game such as this. Sure it has the same story Peach gets kidnapped yadadadada but each game has its own unique function, this one by far is one of the most creative. You fall in love with all the characters quickly, I'm going, to be honest, the more companions Mario has it takes longer to have a connection with that character. Super Mario Odyssey's main storyline is short and that's what makes it hard to develop a connection with Cappy, but the game encourages you to keep exploring and paying attention to the little things! It's truly one of the greatest and most fun games I've ever played in my life. It gets boring after you finished pretty much the entire game, but that happens to every video game eventually. This is just my opinion, you may try it out for yourself. If you have ADHD then I think this game will be great for you, I have ADHD myself and my friends that have ADHD absolutely LOVE this game! This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolutely amazing. Out of every Mario game I have played, this is the best one I have touched, and I'm sure many people agree with me that this is the best Mario game out there. The story is another interesting spin on the 'Bowser Captures Peach' formula, where he wants to marry Peach (proving the entire 'love triangle), so he decides to grab the best things for the wedding in order to make the perfect wedding. During the intro, Bowser shreds up Mario's hat, with a being known as Cappy gathering the 'M' part of his hat. The gameplay is just astounding here. The biggest change to it being Cappy. Gone are the traditional power-ups and taking their place is the CAPture ability. This allows you to take full control of any enemy, with some of them having better control with motion controls once you take off your Switch remotes. Cappy is your main weapon, as you can throw him in order to damage/CAPture enemies, and you can even use him as a platform to jump across to other platforms. Mario controls excellently in this game, and even better, the dive is back and better than ever. The graphics are just astonishing, and you'll notice it mostly in the cutscenes where everything is really fluid. While the music isn't the best it has ever been (*cough* Super Mario Galaxy *cough*), what it gets right, it gets right. My two personal favorite tracks are 'Jump Up, Super Star!' and 'Honeylune Ridge-Escape'. I'm pretty sure it's self-explanatory why those two are my favorite tracks in the game. The level design now takes an open world like feel to it, and not to mention that the visuals in each Kingdom are beautiful. Visual wise, my favorite Kingdom is the Cascade Kingdom. It's just so bright, colorful and beautiful to look at. The new characters within the game are Cappy, Tiara and the Broodals. While I can't say much about Tiara and the Broodals due to the fact that they aren't shown too much, I can talk about Cappy's personality. Even though he is helpful, selfless and heroic, he's much more than just a stereotypical hero. He gets scared easily, he's talkative, he's got real character. Unfortunately, he doesn't really have a backstory of any sorts. There are even little areas in the game where you go into a pixel pipe and you go to Super Mario Bros. gameplay style, and you can still find Power Moons in there. While the Kingdom Coins can be used to get souvenirs, you'd much rather want to use them for costumes that you can wear and change on the fly. The framerate is also really good, running at a crisp 60fps, and only dipping slightly in certain areas in the game. If you're a fan of collect-a-thons or you own a Switch, this game is a must have. Extremely well thought through mechanically just like Zelda BOTW or Maria Wii. Feels like all the best bits of Maria in one, especially with the throwback challenges. Only negative is the longevity. Only 12 worlds means I completed it in less than 10 hours.

This game is pure platforming fun. Each level requires you to go through the level and acquire moons to get to the level. Simple, but the level design is so good you’ll go moon hunting far beyond the required number. There are many costumes and collectibles to go after. Possibly the best Mario 3D game, loads of fun here.

Great Game!!!!!!!! This is a one of a kind game!!! When in Earth did they show Mario's nipples!!!!! I'm proud of you Nintendo! i'm giving you a 9/10 instead of 10/10 because you've got to understand that you can't just add nipples on Mario without a bellybutton. Find this helpful if you agree.

A return to the 3D sandbox Mario. The addition of cappy makes movement so fun and adds a lot to the games death. It is a fantastic experience and the best 3D platforming experience out there.

I’m late to the show, I assumed Mario and the Switch were all the same trash rehashed... I was way off. This game is amazing. Everything from the controls to the costumes feel fresh and new. I got Mario, Zelda, and Bayonetta, I tried the others but only to return to Super Mario Odyssey a short time later. I don’t review much, but I am thrilled with this game.

    Cons
-Only requires a little more than 100 moons to beat the game bare minimum. Without spoiling how many moons there are, that's not a lot of moons. if you stop playing after the final boss, you're missing out on most of the game
-Waggle controls are a little annoying

This game is an Odyssey in every single layer, graphics, world, animations but especially on the most important thing for me: mechanics: everything is full of life and everything as a mini game on it, it's great to discover all those things while you playing.

Right after legend of zelda i jumped straight into mario odyssey so i could review it right after and i finished it and i gotta be honest i can see why people were hyped about it but at the same time i cant really see this game being a game of the year nominee let me explain why
nintendo uses this really jewish and lazy technique called if its not broken don't fix it what i mean by that

nintendo uses this really jewish and lazy technique called if its not broken don't fix it what i mean by that is nintendo recycling almost everything from previous games like bosses needing 3 hits to die and they did took features from mario 64 and mario galaxy although they did add some new stuff like new and refreshing bosses and awesome good looking maps but even after all the new stuff it felt like i was playing another typical mario game that except for the hat ghost didn't put anything new there were cool moments in this game like the wanna be new york kindom and a dragon boss and the ending boss (bowser) but except for that they always throw at you these team rocket wanna be bunnies that work for bowser and you fight them almost the whole game again there are bosses that aren't them but most of the bosses are these 4 bunnies and i really don't understand why there are no power ups like i understand that you can just possess a monster and get its powers but still even one power up could make the game better after you finish the game there is endgame and the game asks you to collect a lot of moons and i really mean a looot of them but the reward you get for it is awful you just re battle boswer and at the end you get a thank you and some fireworks which is really stupid so don't bother to 100% the game because there is no satisfying reward awaiting for you another thing i don't understand is the co op in this game because one of your friends plays the hat ghost and the other mario basically meaning that the one that plays mario is doing all the work while the other that plays the hat ghost does nothing and sometimes just watches

At the end i did enjoy this game and there were moments where i wanted to just turn of the switch because they were repetitive but the game is a cool time waster and its not serious at all so you can take it anywhere i give this game a 8/10 i do recommend it but after the price drops a little bit

When Nintendo first unveiled Super Mario Odyssey, it was clear they were attempting to recapture the audience that grew up on old school 3D Mario’s. Visually at least, Super Mario Odyssey was the game we all wanted, but does it deliver?

When Nintendo first unveiled Super Mario Odyssey, it was clear they were attempting to recapture the audience that grew up on old school 3D Mario’s. Visually at least, Super Mario Odyssey was the game we all wanted, but does it deliver?

Mario is joined this time on his adventure by Cappy, a sentient hat-being that lives on Mario’s head. He can throw Cappy like a boomerang to retrieve coins, or use Cappy as a platform to jump higher and further than ever before. Plus, a second player can join in the fun by controlling Mario’s hat similar to the Lumas in Super Mario Galaxy. In single player mode, Cappy feels like F.L.U.D.D. from Super Mario Sunshine with an upgraded personality. This becomes apparent when trying to defeat levels without your trusty companion as playing without cappy can feel like a handicap.

The level design in Super Mario Odyssey is incredible and the music provides plenty of goosebumps with a sense of nostalgia. I nearly had tears in my eyes listening to a certain song in New Donk City. The game feels somewhat easy and on the short side, but there are enough power moons and costumes to collect that provide just the right amount of content for a completionist. All in all, Super Mario Odyssey was the game I wanted so I can say with full confidence that Nintendo delivered. Final verdict: 9/10.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
