Super Mario Odyssey builds on what Mario 64 started, creative 3d platforming with adaptive easy to learn controls and a smooth well established camera, as well as complimenting what made Mario the gaming icon he is today with fun but annoyingly short 2d areas which left me wanting more and more of that 80s nostalgia. Each world you visit in your journey doesn't overstay its welcome and is very consistent and smart about treating the player to wonderfully designed sandbox environments and well thought out mini challenges. The real highlight however isn't what we already know about 3d Mario, its what's new to the party. Mario on his predictable yet charmingly traditional journey to rescue Princess Peach from Bowser meets a new friend, the top hat shaped ghost named Cappy, who allows Mario to possess and control new and old enemies. One cant help but wonder how Nintendo come up with these insane ideas, but this mechanic is more than just your typical gimmick and proves that Nintendo still have the skill and genius to successfully supply joyful and mind blowing moments. Playing as a Bullet Bill, Goomba and other old enemies is beyond satisfying, but surprisingly the new enemies prove to be the best monsters to capture and play as. As well as your standard minions stopping you in your path, you'll also meet some of the best bosses in Mario's history, one of them in particular left me speechless and I'm sure will do the same to you. The game is a jaw dropping package of new ideas built on a solid foundation made by previous Mario games, and im thrilled to say that this is yet another Masterpiece by Nintendo. This is a very easy 10/10 Expand

I have decided to completely redo my Odyssey review, which is STILL a 10/10 and my personal favorite Game of all Time. This game completely OBLITERATES Breath of the Overrated, which I can't even play for longer than 5 minutes without being bored out of my mind anymore.

    Pros:
+ Gameplay: Masterfully executed within every kingdom. There was more variety in the gameplay of Odyssey than in previous Mario games.
+ Soundtrack: I'm probably alone on this, but Odyssey's soundtrack is the best Mario has ever had. Galaxy's soundtrack can't come near this in my opinion.
+ The Kingdoms: I personally LOVED every single Kingdom. Whether it's for the beautiful setting or the minigames, they all had a LOT of charm.
+ The Objectives: While there are a number of effortless moons, they are excusable since they are OUTNUMBERED by the better moons (unlike Korok Seeds that require ZERO effort to obtain other than looking up a guide because BotW does a poor job with Korok Seeds).
+ The Graphics: While not the best I've seen, they are definitely THE BEST Nintendo ever pulled off. The graphics alone pulled me into the game.
+ The Bosses: Ok, maybe the Broodals might not be the best bosses in a game, but at least they aren't Blight Ganons. All the other bosses, however, made me actually have to try. Plus, the bosses are unnecessarily AMAZING.
+ The Ending: This might be a controversial statement, but I loved the ending of Odyssey. Yep, I said it.
+ Camera Mode: Why isn't this in every game?

    Con:
    - Nose Physics: It's so minor that I don't know if I could even call it a nitpick, but it ruins pictures sometimes.

Overall, like I said above, this game is a SOLID 10/10, my GotY from 2017, and my personal favorite Game of all Time. I have never experienced this kind of fun before in my life.

Some of the music here is also top-notch, with the Cascade Kingdom music being a highlight.

My only criticisms (fairly minor) with it are that Power Moons (replacing Power Stars and Shine Sprites from previous games) are almost everywhere, thus making it feel like less of an accomplishment when you receive one. Whereas games like Super Mario 64 awarded Power Stars for completing sometimes lengthy missions, here, you're given Power Moons where you'd likely find 1-Up Mushrooms in other games. Also, there is an odd lack of music in some areas.

Ultimately though, I think these criticisms more come down to personal preference, so Super Mario Odyssey still gets a 10 from me. It's a fantastic adventure and highly recommended to any Switch owner.

I'm very sad to write this review because I really wanted to enjoy this game, but alas here I am. This was a boring game that was easy to beat and a huge disappointment. How it is so hyped up and praised I will never understand. I would have given it a one for the design but the graphics were horrendous. Everybody says this game is too easy, but why? I just don't get it. If you think this game is easy, well, make it harder on yourself! There are so many different moons in each kingdom it's insane! If you are going for the easiest moons, and the least amount of moons possible, then it's your fault that the game is easy! All you need to do is go and force yourself to find those more difficult moons!
The music in this game is absolutely flawless. I wouldn't say BOTW status there, but the music really matched well with the environment. I always felt like I was "in it".
Gameplay mechanics? Perfect. Cappy adds a whole new level to this wide, expansive game, and really makes it more fun to move around. The controls never feel like they are slipping in your hands, and Mario just moves so well that even if you are going around, collecting Moons that you've already gotten, you still have fun doing it! I literally wander around kingdoms for no apparent reason, just because I love moving Mario so much.
Oh, and can't forget about the post game content. No spoilers here, but just to say, there is infinite post game content. With added secrets, added stages, Koopa Freerunning, and now even Luigi's Balloon World, you will never get bored!
And, just all of the throwbacks to the old Mario games, like 64, and even a surprising amount of Sunshine, there is infinite nostalgia for you to crunch down on, like a never ending feast.
Honestly, just everything about this wide, open-world game makes me want to never put it down. 10/10.

Being Nintendo the game looks amazing, great detail and vibrant colours make this a very unique Mario game. It also has very unique levels for a 3d platformer; you go to a black and white hat world, to a mechanical jungle, to a japenese fortress, to the moon! The character Cappy introduces a really clever gameplay style. Capturing enemies is fun and every capture is used in an interesting way. There are so many moves and manoeuvres to explore the great levels. The bosses are also pretty good for Mario, special mention to the Broodal mech and final bowser fight. In conclusion an amazing start for Mario on the switch. Let’s hope it just gets better from here. Expand

As I've stated before, I love most of the kingdoms like the Metro Kingdom and the Snow Kingdom was a very pleasant and better than expected kingdom too. I also like the art style, being the typical Mario art style (so not ultra realistic 4k), it doesn't necessarily feel 'kiddy' like Mario is stereotyped to be, I've never really believed Mario is a childish game, however, others do... especially those ignorant cool kids all over the place. Anyway, I got a off track, as I was saying I like the unique little challenges given to us, they're fun and simple. The boss battle for the majority of the game are a little on the easy side, however, gives Cappy a lot of use. I'll also like to mention the new companionship between Mario and Cappy being absolutely great and giving us more creative and fun puzzles and ways to play.

The reason why I didn't give it a 10/10 is because I believe it's a bit short and a few kingdoms I was slightly disappointed with, especially the Cascade Kingdom. Reasons being I expected it to be a large challenging kingdom nearer to the end. However, I was left disappointed to see Nintendo didn't do more with it when they could've done countless things to make it better.

Overall, a great game, worth the money I spent, fun and creative. GG Nintendo, you've defeated me and my money again. Definitely a competitor for Game of the Year 2017 behind The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. A breath of fresh air from Nintendo, they have to win GOTY.

Never have I found joy in simply moving a character around. This is a must buy, no going around it. That is the general review.

    This is the personal review:
When I was young, my family owned a WII and a DS. we had a collective amount of about 10 games for each system. The most fun i had was playing Mario Kart and Wii sports, and that was about it. We eventually sold our Wii, and for 5 years, that was the last time I played a Mario game. Then one day, I was in school and I was looking for computer games to kill the time. I eventually found this game called "Super Mario World". I was like "Super Mario World? What's this? It's probably just some dumb fan game." But it was unblocked, so I thought "why not?" and I played it on a web emulator. (I didn't know at the time) After that I found the game really enjoyable, but a bit challenging. Then, I found Super Mario 64 on my free time, downloaded an emulator and rom, and played. Again, it was fun, but I could tell it wasn't aging fine, and it took me a while to realize I could just play via controller (Don't play 3d games on keyboard). After both those games, I begged my parents to get a Switch, so that I could play Mario Kart 8 and Breath of the Wild, and also Super Mario Odyssey when it came out. In august, I got the Switch and 2 months later, the game that inspired this review. As I am typing this i am tear driven, not because I returned the game, but because playing this game has made me realize how much I missed out when I was younger. Everything in this game makes me feel like I'm 6 again, when I felt invincible and never worried about anything. That's why I've written this review 6 months after the games release. The exploration is probably the best part about this game, but there was never a boring part at any point. This game is so fun in-fact, that it has inspired me to start off on the creation of my own games.
Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps Mario Odyssey is just a passing Fad, and in a few years it'll start to age like its predecessors before it. But in my eyes, this game is a timeless masterpiece, and nothing can change that

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. YES YES YES ALL THE YES! This game...THIS! GAME! IT'S THE BEST THING I'VE PLAYED IN A LONG TIME! As someone who grew up playing games like Sunshine and Galaxy it would make perfect sense for Nintendo to step back into their comfort zone why'll also pushing their mascot forward. And if anything it was a perfect idea. They pushed Mario back into the open world, sandbox styled gameplay why'll making him explore all these great, wide, wacky worlds (Sorry. I just had to) And bringing back old characters like Pauline and even put Mario in Nintendo's version of dark souls. All the controls feel fluid and nice. They're not too stiff but not to loose either. Basically a perfect mix of the two. The one problem i have with Mario in this game is that trying to move on small platforms are in the sky is pretty, pretty, pretty hard. With the sky you do have a bit more control since throwing Cappy allows you to snap your movement in a different direction but when you're trying to sneak on a platform to be sure not to fall into some icky goop in the Lost Kingdom it can be really hard and you might even end up falling down and doing the exact opposite of what you wanted to do in some cases, depending on where you are. Other than that the game is just absolutely phenomenal. I mean it has it's flaws as all games do but you can still enjoy the heck out of it from start to finish. All the post game content is great as well. You've got the Mushroom Kingdom, you have more power moons to collect, You have Weegee's Balloon World and you even have more costumes to collect. Definitely the best game i have picked up in ages and i hope it stays that way. Expand

The regional coins also really make you want to explore. Also the moves you can do with cappy make for some very versatile platforming. The bosses are also very creative and fun.

Now for my problems. This game has a lot of nit-picks watering it down. My biggest problem is the difficulty. Easy games for me just seem boring and no want to replay the main game over again. Also, why forced motion controls? i like playing my switch portable mode but forcing motion controls sometimes make me dock it or play another game entirely! Luckily, you can totally get past the entire game without using motion controls, but i'm somewhat of a completionist and some moons require them. The transformations are personally fine, but they aren't a game changer they just feel like power-ups in disguise. I would give this game a 7.5/10, i can't do that so i just rounded. But despite these flaws, this game is still a must have for Mario fans, but not necessarily switch owners.

Oh, the capture mechanic. It is extremely useful and creative. All of the kingdoms are well-designed and good in their own way. My personal favorite has to be the Wooded Kingdom. The music is great and the level itself has some great puzzles and platforming. The Lost Woods is a great addition, but can be annoying when trying to get moons. Speaking of moons, they are the main collectible and there are 880 moons in all, but you can get a maximum of 999 when buying from Crazy Cap. Crazy Cap is the game's shop, where you buy all of the things the game has to offer. You buy these items with coins and purple coins, which are exclusive to separate kingdoms. Super Mario Odyssey's bosses are extremely original and creative. Overall, this game is extremely well-designed and an amazing sandbox game. 10/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a kids game. I don't say that because it's cartoonish or anything. It rewards you for literally everything you do. I would have accepted the game if the main quest was easy if the post game was easy, but no. The post game is easier than the main quest. That has to be some kind of joke. Not even the final level was that hard. There were only a few times I genuinely had fun which were the 8-bit gravity shrine in the Mushroom Kingdom and when you get to be Bowser. Other than those, the game is just constant rewards. If you're a kid and you have never played a Mario, this game was designed for you, but if you're a hardcore Mario fan like me, this game wasn't made for you. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is absolutely mind-blowing. Beautiful graphics and I really see that Nintendo has truly created the best Mario game so far. It is an amazing game and I don't see why being easy is bad. The game has a high skill ceiling. Well, first I'll explain what a skill ceiling is. A skill ceiling is a point where any improvements you make are unnoticeable. And it's awesome how assist mode works. I've played through the game twice, once with the assist and once without it, and it does really help. It's the only switch game I play now, and I literally haven't taken out its gamecard since I got the game. I literally got up, applauded, and whistled at the credits, and it's seriously cool. I love the sheer amount of content, and describing how amazing this game is would take well over 5000 characters. Let's run through what you can and can't do here. THIS IS THE PART WITH SPOILERS!
Capture a T-rex and run around smashing stuff? Check.
Throw hats at, jump on, toss bombs at, and spin down onto evil cartoon rabbits? Check.
Go on for 3 hours, scavenge 6 kingdoms, and leave 20 moons richer? Check.
Go on for 10 minutes, search 1 kingdom, and leave 2 moons richer? Check.
Come back after the credits roll and find a weird metal box that shines? Check.
Open the box, which hides like 20 moons? Check.
Giggle at the final cutscene before the credits? Check.
Hammer, bomb, and peck a giant rabbit-bot? Check.
Possess random character that give you cool powers? Check.
Ground pound a Gushen lower than it spawns, stand on its spawn zone, and have it spawn underwater?
    Check.
Capture said Gushen, glitch through a wall, and zoom off? Check, although they should probably fix that.
Throw your hat at Bowser, capture him, and take off running through a collapsing moon? Check.
Visit Peach in all the kingdoms? Check.
Puzzle over devilishly hard hint art, crouch through pipes trying to find that last moon, and end up going on a 6-hour mooning spree? Check... that came out wrong *cough* mooning spree *cough*

This is probably the best first game to acquire for the Switch, it shows what the joy-cons can do and it's not too difficult nor too easy. It also doesn't take too long to beat and it has plenty of goals to complete once you've beaten the game for completion oriented players. I also think that this will be a better Kirby game than Kirby Star Allies when released as it's very orientated around Mario taking over enemies and using their powers.

A perfect game for younger games, leaves a little to be desired for older ones in search of some more difficulty, I think they could have made the bosses a little more difficult but I understand they wouldn't want to alienate younger gamers who own the switch and older gamers can find that difficulty in indie titles.

The game also has a pretty good storyline with Mario's New friend the Hat, and plenty of collectibles with the moons and purple coins in all the different worlds. Collecting the coins to unlock different outfits and treasures is sure to provide plenty of end-game content for those complaining the game is too short. While I don't think Mario Odyssey deserves a 9 (and a 10 I think is all but impossible on this platform) an 8 is where it truly sits and is definitely the best entryway to Switch gaming for gamers of all ages and backgrounds.

No matter which way you turn there always seems to be something to see and do and the game biggest new feature, the ability to take control of many of the enemies by throwing you cap at them, is brilliantly implemented into the gameplay allowing for some excellent puzzles and platforming challenges.

You gave us a "Super Mario" game PACKED with content, collectibles, and new things to do. You made a "Super Mario" game that felt like what we wanted, but also evolved the franchise and kept things fresh. You created a love letter to the entire "Mario" franchise (and even some side-franchises), a game that reminds us of why this franchise has survived for so long and has churned out such wonderful titles. And best of all, you made a creative, fresh, and all-around brilliant video game, a game that I might go as far as to say is one of the best in your long library of excellent titles.
"Super Mario Odyssey" is truly a wonder to behold. It's creative, it's inventive, it's fun, it's gorgeous, it controls wonderfully, and all-in-all, it's just incredible. It's a game that's easy to get into, but one that brings more than enough challenge to the table. And with 999 Power Moons to collect and plenty of different creatures to capture, all leading to different gameplay mechanics, there is PLENTY to do in this game. The mechanic of being able to capture enemies and characters also allows for some incredibly varied, and all-around fun, gameplay that will keep you coming back for more. Earlier this year, I mentioned that "Super Smash Bros. Melee" was my favorite video game of all time. Well, I can safely say that there's a new #1, and that's "Super Mario Odyssey." This game is an absolute must-play: if you don't have a Switch, I can say it is absolutely worth buying one for this game. And if you do have a Switch, there's no reason this game shouldn't be part of your collection, because it is absolutely magnificent.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely loved this game, but a few flaws (and the extreme frustration of Darker Side) made me give it a 9.

    Cons:
    1: Difficulty
Now, I had no problems with how the game is too easy and I think that it was a medium challenge (but I am slightly sad that there aren't higher difficulties, but most Mario games don't have them, so I ignore this) but then Darker Side has to come and frustrate me beyond belief with no checkpoints and a pretty difficult challenge.
    2: inconsistencies:
I had a few small problems with this through my playthrough, like how I throw the cap, hold Y and dive but I don't dive, or how I clipped through a wall as one of those cloud things in the Snow Kingdom (or the Ice Kingdom, I forgot its name) when the other side of the wall that it was part of was fine. Honestly, these barely impacted me, but I decided to mention them anyways.

    Pros:
    1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.: Basically everything else:

It is an understatement to say that I loved this game. The art style, the music, the gameplay, and the content level (most importantly the gameplay) were all things that made me come back for weeks after I got the game with the Switch along with Splatoon 2 (I never played Splatoon 1, and Splatoon 2, or Spla2n as I jokingly call it, is also great) and also get more games for the Switch, like Arms and Darkest Dungeon!
    Summary:
I really loved the game and you should get it.

But if you only go for the ending then you are missing out on an amazing package of charm and fun and it does make this game a bit of a "its not the destination its the journey" type games this would be a bigger problem if the journey wasn't so much fun there are so many new races or species or whatever. The controls where perfect and I felt at no time that when I died it was the game's fault when I died I felt like I made a mistake. Speaking of controls I found the motion controls pretty fun as well but this is probaly because I used the sperated JoyCons and not the ProControler so if you want to use a ProControler then you probally wont enjoy them as much the ideal way to play is with the JoyCons. There is something that gives the games controls the extra step to being perfection is Cappy. In this game your new sidekick is the hat ghost thing Cappy. With a press of the Y button or a flick of the JoyCon you can toss out your Felt Friend and grab coins and kill small baddies. The reason he only kills small foes is because when thrown at a normal sized enemies is that when Cappy is thrown at them he will "Capture" them, but its more like possesion because you go inside there bodies and take control of there brains. This adds a fun new twist onto gameplay and makes some fun boss battles based around these Captures. Another thing you can do with Cappy is when he is thrown you can dive onto him which will give you a bounce then you can dive again to get some serious style points this can used to get to seemingly impossible areas. How about the worlds you use these controls in well they are fairly compact with tons of moons they really remind me of Banjo Kazzoie but with like way more jiggys they are fun to traverse and have memorable NPCs and locals. All around I would say Mario Odyssey is my favorite game of 2017 even more than Breath of the Wild Expand

Bowser's Kingdom isn't just a simple lava dungeon, but a Japanese-styled mansion world, with my favorite enemy, the Pokio. The Moon served as a great final level, with the Dark and Darker Sides being, well, hard. The callbacks to Super Mario 64, particularly in the Mushroom Kingdom, are great (I grew up with the DS version, so it is quite nostalgic to me) and when the update comes out, I'm grabbing the outfits, I'm using the filters, I'm playing Balloon World, and I consider this game the best Mario game of all time, and my personal favorite game of all time. First of all, the mobility is simply incredible. It sucks how it takes the full story (full "game") to adjust to this huge range of controls, but once you unlock post-game material it is simply ridiculous how easy it is to navigate these action-packed maps. There is enough challenges in this game to feel a sense of fulfilment once you complete a level, collect that damn seemingly elusive moon or beat a boss. However, there is also a real urge to do one better by collecting more items or coins to unlock outfits for your favourite protagonist. Who knew that Mario would become the fashion icon he is in 2017/2018? And who knew parading him in these outfits would bring simple joy?
I played this game and I smiled a lot throughout and it had me thinking, I cannot remember the last time I played a single player game (please do not count having a friend play as cappy as multiplayer, it isn't, it's torture) where I actually laughed out loud as much or even just smiled.
Well done Nintendo, all that is missing is a better multiplayer mode and larger levels. It's a game that ended too soon on the first play through.

Super Mario Odyssey is as close to perfect as any game can be. After hitting 100% completion, I have to say it's one of the best games I've ever played, and would have been my game of the year for 2017 if not for Breath of the Wild.

What makes it so good? To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games.

    What makes it so good?

To start with, it's core mechanics and formula are great. The capture mechanic really escalates this beyond other Mario games. There's something magic about being able to become practically every enemy you encounter and learning how to use their unique characteristics to your advantage. However, even without that fantastic new addition, the basics are all incredible. Movement is fluent, and the quest to find all 880 moons, and the many regional coins hidden in each kingdom, is fun - they make the game a lot bigger than I expected and the challenge presented by the sheer volume and creativity of the moons (which will surely be appreciated by completionists) kept me playing for more than 55 hours (the addictive minigames and leaderboards helped to bolster that playtime). After seeing everything the game has to offer, I was happy with the varying difficulty. Furthermore, Odyssey has an excellent tone, never taking itself too seriously, whilst being incredibly charming. There's a certain polish applied to everything in the game that keeps it consistent and keeps it feeling alive. Every single kingdom is impeccably well designed, from the soundtrack to the characters and creatures that live there. There isn't a single forgettable location, with it even making something memorable and interesting out of snow and water levels. I don't think I could pick a favourite nor the worst - every kingdom is truly special (however, I think it's only fair to give the stellar Metro Kingdom a mention). One of my favourite things was to discover what each kingdom had to offer, because of how distinct each is from the last. There's so much to see, and its a pleasure to be able to get absorbed in the excellent soundtrack and interact with the brilliant environments.

It's fun. I don't see how anyone could dislike it - the variety is so intense that it's hard to imagine that there isn't something here for everyone. It's far better than any other Mario game I've ever played, and far surpasses the likes of Super Mario 64. This is one of those games that is so good that people will be using it as a benchmark for years; it's raised the standards for modern platformers and collectathons.

Every single moment spent playing Odyssey is a moment well spent - this is an objectively perfect game that is deserving of it's universal praise, and of it's name. Odyssey, meaning epic journey, couldn't be a better fit.

I would love to see some actual plot from one of these types of games. I do enjoy just running around different kingdoms and trying to jump from x position to y position to see if it's possible, and it is fun, but after you have collected every single power moon in the game, that's all you can really do, besides starting a new game. The game is mostly easy and the boss fights follow a clear pattern, but there Re some difficulty spikes here and there. I’d still recommend to casual gamers though.

It definitely feels like a successor to Super Mario 64, but I found Super Mario 64 to be better. Super Mario Odysseus major problem for me is that the worlds are so small and claustrophobic. I feel like I could get the hype behind this game if the worlds were huge and immersive, but usually around the time you’re getting into a world is around the time you’ve seen all there is to see. There are hidden rooms and hidden moons here and there, but for the most part the worlds are very small. I’d even say Super Mario 64 has bigger worlds than this game. And despite this game playing wonderfully and has neat details even down to the HD ruble, I cannot give it higher than an 8. I got all moons, coins, souvenirs, music, etc in about 55 hours. Main story itself only takes about 10. For scale, I’ve done over 200 hours on Breath of the Wild. 55 hours for 100% completion in my opinion is quite a short game. Between Breath of the Wild and this, is much higher recommend Breath of the Wild, but if you have that and want something else to hold you over, I’d recommend this, but $60 is a bit steep for smallish worlds.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm not angry, I'm just disappointed. Nintendo marketed this as a big comeback to the old 3D mario style, and since there were now huge kingdoms with several moons (this game's take on stars) I thought it'd be something similar to Super Mario 64, and it feels like the game really tries to cash in on that good ol' 90s nostalgia.
So, setting the superficial stuff aside (blocky suit and hat, for example) let's see how this game compares to the previous entries.
64 had 7 stars per level, whereas Odyssey ranges from 30 to 80 per kingdom, give or take. The kingdoms ARE bigger, yes, but the amount of moons doesn't scale accordingly. This means that moons have inherently less value than a star had in previous games.
In my opinion this has both positive and negative sides: on one hand, the player can be rewarded for finding hidden secrets in the map with something that actually holds value, instead of say, some coins; however, the player doesn't feel as satisfied when getting a particularly hard moon if they are getting one every 2 minutes for doing next to nothing.
After finishing the game, getting moons seems like a chore, and the 250 and 500 moon rewards are not very fulfilling.
This leads me to my next complain: hardly ever in this game, did I feel like there was a platforming challenge that actually seemed hard. This is a huge letdown because Mario's movements in this game are an absolute joy to perform, but you never really get a chance to use them for something that makes a difference, besides the occasional golden koopa race.
And unfortunately, to me the captures seemed like something very gimmicky rather than an actual challenge. Almost every time you need to use a captured monster, the challenge is identifying that you need that capture. Once you take the frog to the place with the high ledge, you get your moon and the deal is done, no platforming skill required.
The thing that gets me when comparing this game to Galaxy 2 for example, is the fact that upon getting all 250 stars, the game rewarded you with a painfully hard level where you had to apply everything you had learned during the game. It was a brilliant reward to give players who wanted to go the extra mile and doing the 100%.
Mario Odyssey has two post-game levels: Dark Side of the Moon, a boss rush; and Darker Side of the Moon, a platforming level comparable on the surface to Galaxy 2's Grandmaster Galaxy.
The problem is that the idea of difficulty for this levels is having them be long (and without checkpoints). They're not difficult, but you can get easily frustrated when after dying you have to repeat everything from the start.
I had an interesting thought while playing this game. BotW and Odyssey were marketed kind of similarly, as a more open and adventurous game, with a bigger focus on exploration. There's a big problem with this approach for Odyssey, as opposed to Zelda.
The only tangible rewards you can ever get out of exploration in Odyssey are moons and purple coins. This takes A LOT out of the mystery of exploring the land. In Zelda you can get new armor or weapons with unknown effects, or new ingredients to craft or cook, that's rewarding.
Another problem with exploration in this game is that there is content locked before the endgame for no apparent reason, and this isn't communicated clearly. When I first began playing and reached Cascade Kingdom, I decided I was going to get every moon in the level before moving to the next one, but then I realized there were moons that were impossible to get, that is, blank spots on the moon list. After beating the game I went back and found out what those moons were: A Peach moon, which is a regular moon given to you by Peach, a couple of underground levels, a second koopa race... I don't understand why this content is locked at the beginning. The game is supposed to give you freedom to explore every kingdom, why don't they just do that? The moons that I had gotten and the layout of the level had become a blur by the time I got back and I had to re familiarize with the level and remember which moons I already had for no good reason.
Overall I don't think this new approach suits Mario very good, and I hope to see a real comeback to the harder levels of previous games. I hope people start seeing this game for what it is rather than what it looks like, so we get better Mario games down the line.

It is the old classic Mario story, Bowser kidnapped princess Peach and Mario is there for her rescue. To accomplish that, you must search for moons. Well and there are lot's of moons. I really thought that I already found many of them, but than realized that just in this "world"/"level" there were 69 moons ... and you only need a fraction of them to continue the story.
And that the biggest flaw of the game in my opinion. Yes you can try to get them all but there are so many that you get the feeling they were just positioned so you have to do something after the story is over. It's more or less like getting all the flags in the old Assassins Creed game. It just isn't fun after you got 40 in the current world. Yes there are different worlds that also have many moons, but at some point the fun getting them is just over.
It's a good game, but not as good as the hype promised.

I can't put much more without spoiling, but i will say this: get the game. Expand

I didn't think I liked Mario games anymore. The last one I played was Mario 64, and while I enjoyed it for a while, I've never gone back to it.

But Odyssey is kind of amazing. It plays like an updated version of Ocarina of Time, yet with Kirby-like power stealing mechanics. Brilliant decisions, both. We get a format we're familiar with, intuitive controls, and satisfying abilities.

The only negative thing I can think of is that after "completing" the game, you can go back and collect more moons from each stage, and that's not quite as fun as going through the stages for the first time. Overall, though, it's just incredible.

Super Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess PeachSuper Mario really takes us back to when Mario was known as the king of gaming. Recently with 3D world and 3D land Mario took a bit of a dip with creativity but his comeback has never been more glorious. I feel like mario odyssey is a general mix of 64, sunshine and galaxy (the true mario classics). Mario odysseys plot hasn't changed in the fact that you are still rescuing Princess Peach but nevertheless nobody plays mario for the plot anyway. Odyssey takes the standard platform genre and turns it into a sandbox styled environment. Mario will travel the globe going to numerous kingdoms of willd and abstract themes such as the luncheon kingdom which is a rainbow delicacy world or the seaside kingdom where the oceans are made of fizzy water. Each kingdom is PACKED with creativity and charm and most of them are giant. Some kingdoms are smaller and has less exploration value such as the cascade and lake kingdoms but the majority are gigantic. The main motive for travelling to these worlds is that Bowser is collecting possessions and relics from these kingdoms to use at the wedding where he will be officially married to the princess and Mario must go on a wild chase through each kingdom trying to catch his "minions". This is another thing that the game does extraordinarily well the koopa kids are scrapped and no longer exist and have been replaced by "the broodals" a play on words of "the brutals" and "Bride" and are the head party planners of the wedding. It's genuinely lovely to see a new type of mainline enemy because lets be honest, we all knew that the koopa kids were getting really old really fast. The boss fights however are the very standard 3 hit phase bosses we find in many games but especially mario. Each boss must be hit 3 times and each one of them will make the boss battle harder but the chances of you dying are slim, the bosses are really easy, granted this is a kids game but there's a difference between easy and a complete pushover (which they were) however some kingdoms have a regional boss that can only be found in that kingdom aside from the broodals such as a giant squid or mechanical flower machine??? Like I said the creativity in this game is astronomical so the bosses are bound to be creative. Although they are easy there is a certain post game activity where you will fix this problem. The game isn't meant to focus heavily on story. instead it focuses on exploration and diving (quite literally!) into every nook and cranny of the kingdom, if you want to rush through the story you can do it in an hour, but that's if you are properly speed-running, the game WANTS you to explore so if that's not your thing you may find the game disappointing. Aswell as a game of endless creativity, new enemys and boss battles and reminiscing to the days or classic Mario, Odyssey has the biggest move set ever in a Mario game, the amount of tricks and parkour you can play around with in this game is mind blowing. To list a few: Dive, roll, cap jump, cap dive, cap roll, ground-pound-jump, twirl, double jump, and many many more. The main attraction however is the brand new capture ability which REALLY puts the cherry on the cake, early in the game a hat creature from the cap kingdom takes control of marios cap after it gets shredded to pieces creating basically a living mario hat. Throwing your hat at an enemy will allow you to essentially dive into their body and take control of them. As you can imagine this opens tons of possibility's! You can be a bullet bill to soar through the skies, play as a hammer bro or goomba, swim through lava as a lava bubble and my personal favourite is that you can be dinosaur and rampage through the lands of cascade kingdom! The games main collectables are called power moons and they are used to power up the odyssey (your ship) there are absolutely tons in each kingdom and in some there are even over 100 to collect, there are a grand total of 999 moons to collect which are even more than korok seeds in zelda so there's plenty to do there. Another collectable are regional coins which are different designs for each kingdom, you can use these to purchase stickers or souvenirs for the odyssey. Collecting regular coins allows you to buy outfits for Mario including some really nifty original styles in the post-game. Talking about post-game, the post-game has huge value, probably one of the biggest I've seen. Most of the moons dont become available until after the ending is unlocked and a few more tricks and appearances become available including some new kingdoms which is a delight because in a game as short as odyssey you need tons of post-game value which is delivered well. There is a mode called snapshot mode where you can freeze the game and take wonderful pictures with countless filters which can then be used for mobile or desktop backgrounds.
In general odyssey is a switch mustbuy, great exploration, outstanding creativity and an absolute joy to play keeping you hooked for ages

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
