This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Super Mario Odyssey is an amazing game and the sequel to Super Mario 64 that has been 20 years in the making. It is astounding there are 17 unique kingdoms each fun to explore. This games story is short but has an amazing final Bowser boss . And don't forget the capture system it is one of the greatest aspects about the game and adds a lot of variety never before seen in a Mario game. The moons that you collect throughout the game are just a blast and that's good seeing as there are 836 unique objectives now i have about 469 of them and the have all been fun to collect. The game is pretty easy but some moons are challenging one of them in the later kingdoms took me like 30 minutes to complete. Finally the controls are the best in a Mario game giving the player ridiculous of control and the largest variety of moves in a Mario game. Over all Super Mario odyssey is a joy and a must have for switch owners. Expand

This is essentially the perfect game. The controls are perfect, give mario a massive variety of moves and give you a lot of freedom in how you play the game. Exploration is always rewarded and there are so many things to see.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've just 100% completed Odyssey and I just wanted to write somewhere about how god damn impressed I was by it; I've not felt this refreshed by a 3D platformer since I were a young'n playing Banjo Tooie.
The game play was so enjoyable and fluid, keeping me interested at all times to go and explore every nook and cranny instead of just looking things up online as I do when I just can't be bothered to give other games the time of day.
I can't help but feel that if Yooka Laylee was even a fraction like this, it would have been much better received; MO just ticked all the boxes YL didn't in terms of mechanics, tone and content.
Odyssey was also one of those games that just kept giving, I was so shocked to see initially how many moons there are to get per level, but then you of course get given ample more via the moon blocks after beating Bowser's lizard ass within the main story. It was such a nice way to distribute more content as the game went on rather than fart-assing around with longed out mechanics or spending a fortune on 'the rest of the game' through DLC as so many do these days.
Don't get me wrong, there were a few infuriating parts (the skipping rope 100 moon, the final challenge), but these felt more like something I could get better at by trying rather than wanting to throw the joycons at my TV like ninja stars.
With this, Breath of the Wild and several other great titles, the switch is really shaping up to be a worthy contender late into the console cycle and I cannot wait to see what DLC they can crack out for this. Well done Nintendo for showing everyone else (cough, EA) how it's done.

Not as good as I was expecting, and not surpassing Sunshine and 3D World as my favorite Mario games. I miss having a button for an 2nd speed of run, like in 3D world, and the levels didn't seem to be designed in a way that I find fun, like Sunshine's were.

Again I just echo the majority of reviews on here

    The game is fantastic

Even my non game playing girlfriend is playing it

Its as easy or hard as you want it to be

Not going to give it a 10 as I don't believe any game can be perfect.... yet

This Mario Odyssey is 100% pure fun and a piece of art. A true successor to the 3D Mario, including especially the first one Mario 64.

Every world - called kingdom - is packed with details and gameplay, especially the transformations which replace the power up: Mario can use his cap to take control of various elements or ennemis. It’s technically beautiful, charming, innovative.

I was just shocked when i understood that game do not uses all the buttons of controllers, but in hour i realised that they were replaced by motion controls. And a little bit more about gamepads (joy cons and pro controller) abilities, about hd vibration. Its first AAA title on NSwitch using its in that way, you dont need sound while playing you feel the game without it, because the vibration is 10 out of 10.

First let's start of as i said before the game is way way way too easy and should have had some difficulty options in order to liven up the gameplay a bit a lot of the enemies at time just feel there to pad the world rather than be an obstacle to Mario.

Moons . . . too many damn moons what is Nintendos issue lately? with putting way too many collectibles in their games to a point that it starts to feel more like tedium than a fun aspect, I collected almost all of the original moons in the game and a lot of them felt a joy to get they were often hidden well or required some puzzle or platforming to reach after the game however . . . You essentially double all of the moons by touching moon cubes and not only do they mark all of them on your map but a majority of them are just there no work, no puzzle, no platforming It begs the question of why? The other issue with this being you don't need to collect them all to progress the story so what felt like quite lengthy playtime from me i quickly came to realise would be a couple of hours maximum if others weren't too bothered about the collectibles

My last gripe is with the costumes I understand that we have Cappy so we are supposed to get powers and abilities from others but at the same time all those moons we collected mean nothing more than just cosmetics =/ they should have added slight and subtle effects like the most obvious make the underwater areas suit allow you to swim slightly faster etc. some of them are cool throwbacks but other than that they just seem a tad pointless.

Either way overall Mario Odyssey should be picked up for the switch it's a great looking and controls superbly I do wish we had more worlds rather than moon cubes so i could have enjoyed spending more time in it's worlds but regardless this is totally a must buy

I was skeptical, but I loved it all.
It’s easy, but it doesn’t need to be difficult to be great. And once you finish it you are greeted with a much larger game than before. You can go nuts collecting every single moon, and there are tons, plus achievements (which could have been linked to the nintendo occount, this is really the only problem I have with the game)

I was skeptical about Super Mario Odyssey at first, mostly due to the realistic setting bearing similarities to Sonic 06, I thought that this would be the first bad main series Mario game, I have never been so wrong about a game before. First the soundtrack and visuals are amazing, to say the least. In fact, as of now it is the best looking game on the Switch bar none, though Sonic ManiaI was skeptical about Super Mario Odyssey at first, mostly due to the realistic setting bearing similarities to Sonic 06, I thought that this would be the first bad main series Mario game, I have never been so wrong about a game before. First the soundtrack and visuals are amazing, to say the least. In fact, as of now it is the best looking game on the Switch bar none, though Sonic Mania slightly beats Mario Odyssey in terms of the music. Mario Odyssey’s weakest point is, like most Mario games the story. Summed up it goes like this Bowser kidnap Peach and Tiara the sister of a magic hat named Cappy who Mario has to wear after his normal red cap is torn to bits in the opening cutscene by Bowser. And that leads us to the gameplay and a sandbox Mario game has never felt this good before. Mario controls excellently during normal gameplay with the controls feeling super responsive including the motion controls which had a couple of problems in galaxy. The main gimmick of Mario Odyssey is Cappy who can control enemies, kill enemies and be used as a jump pad which I have yet to use. Cappy when controlling enemies feels like a whole new game that had and equal amount of effort into it as the main game I will leave it at that. There are also 2D sections that aren’t designed well but are so short they dont have time to start getting annoying. You can also buy clothes at a store which dont do much but can be pretty funny to wear. One last criticism I have is that after taking a hit you cant restore health by grabbing a coin which has been a has been in every Mario game that has a health bar up to this point. The main objective getting moons is a blast since each moon either given to the player as an objective or is hidden for veterans to find while wandering around the kingdoms this game has to offer. Mario Odyssey is a great game that is only a few steps from perfect due to some missteps like the 2D sections, story and the life bar mechanics! Expand

The storyline is great and the kingdoms you have to explore are a FANTASTIC show of perfect design.

This game. THIS GAME. WHERE TO START!?

This game is magical. End of story. It’s explore-y aspect is even more prominent than in Breath of the Wild! And this is a Mario game! The story is basic, but WHO CARES!!!??? It’s a Mario game, and even if the story is basic it’s still somewhat different to the “Bowser kidnaped peach go find her” classic.

The amount of uniqueness and character in this game is overwhelming, and even after you finish the main story, even MORE content is unlocked with these moon rock thingies you can find and activate which spews moons into whatever kingdom (world, essentially) you’re in. (Moons are basically like stars/shine sprites from other games)

The game starts you off in a rather linear, but awesome area! It’s unique in a sense because it isn’t that basic green grass blue sky w1-1 sort of level we’re used to. It’s almost completely different, and it is called the Cap Kingdom. (Bonneton). once you finish the tutorial section it becomes way more explorable and non-linear. It just shows you the pure scope of this game. Don’t even get me started on the size and possibilities of each kingdom. There are 999 moons to collect in the game. Quick example right there.

The 8-bit sections are so classic, and probably bring nostalgia to those who played the original Mario Bros for the NES (there is one section very similar to the original arcade game “Donkey Kong). Speaking about classic, there’s a whole kingdom based off of Mario 64 (1995 for the N64) and a costume that looks exactly like Mario’s character model of THAT game, with the low tri model and everything. Pretty cool.

The boss fights are also unique, and different for a platformer. They aren’t the basic koopalings anymore. They’re the broodals, and I see them as very personalized. I won’t get into them much. (You also fight a realistic dragon at the end of the game which is spectacular).

You're constantly finding secrets you’d never expect, and rooms filled with surprises. There were so many moments in this game where my jaw dropped, and when my jaw wasn’t hitting the ground, I was smiling broadly.

The game becomes rather difficult with the unlocked content post game, with some extremely hard challenges, etcetera. Challenges that require you to do precise movements in order to retrieve a moon or two. Again, while I’m on the topic of movement. The amount of movements there are are simply amazing. There are the classic long jump, ground pound, triple jump, wall jump, backwards somersault and side somersault, but now there are the dive, the dive jump, the ground pound jump, the cap throw, the cap jump, the roll, the upward cap throw, the downward cap throw, the spinning cap throw, the cap throw and hold, the homing cap throw, a spin, and even more moves with the new mounts introduced (which I will get to later) but, yeah. That’s a lot of moves. And they can be used to get places you thought you’d never get to. And you get rewarded for going places you never thought you could. It just shows the pure genious design of this game. (This does require practice though)

Now.. now the mounts. There are 2 new mounts you can control in this game. The jaxi (a very fast, sphinx like jaguar taxi you pay 30 coins to ride) and a motor scooter, or moped. (A fast, drivable scooter found in New Donk City and The Mushroom Kingdom). They are both used for puzzles, and are fun to ride around different areas.

So... I haven’t even gotten to the main mechanic of this game... capturing. (Or possessing as I would call it) capturing is a basic action you can do by throwing your hat at certain creatures (and sometimes inanimate objects) and once you do, the creature will magically grow a moustache, obtain mario’s signature hat and put blue eye contacts in, and you now have complete control over it and it's abilities. Pretty sweet, if I do say so myself. This mechanic is used TONS throughout the game with TONS of different things to capture, including and not limited to a huge piece of meat.

Now here comes a feature I wasn’t to keen on, but loved. Costumes. You can get them in all kingdoms with a full sized crazy cap shop, and they are so fun. (You can get them other ways, too) They are just (take the “just” lightly) ways to dress up your personalized Mario.

In short best game ever. Buy it. I wish the smaller kingdoms like the ruined kingdom, cloud kingdom and lost kingdom could be slightly expanded upon with no cost, but you can’t get everything you want in life.

Most of the main bosses can be skipped if you find enough Power Moons before you encounter them. The game takes many new and experimental leaps for the Super Mario franchise, with many additions such as giant sandbox-like worlds, memorable NPCs and enemies, and the first song in a Mario game with full lyrics, “Jump Up, Super Star!” (not counting spin-offs and promotional material) The controls are tight and responsive, and even though some moves with the capture ability require motion controls, there are button combinations for many of the moves that seem like they require motion. (Example: with a captured Cheep-Cheep, you can shake your controller to attack or press the B and Y buttons.) The capture mechanic is fun, and I had a blast finding out what I could transform into. Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a fantastic experience that will be remembered fondly as the Super Mario 64 of this generation of kids. If you have a switch, buy this game. Expand

I haven't completed a Mario game since Super Mario 64. I was absolutely captivated by everything Super Mario Odyssey had to offer. There is something undeniably charming about a Mario game that weaves threads of Mario of games past into new ones with such subtlety and ingenuity. And New Donk City was a huge disappointment. Nintendo should have gone the extra mile to make Mario be able to capture every single "New Donker" and use each of their unique abilities. The story itself isn't long at all, but it hardly makes a impact on the game itself. It might actually be a favor so that the player can play at their own pace. Peach is kidnapped and Mario needs to save her, same old thing, but like almost every Mario game ever made, the game isn't about the story. However, I will say that this game holds the most cutest ending that I have ever seen in any video game.
Once the story has been finished, the content increases by huge margin. The amount of Moons you can collect is numerous, and there are so many different outfits for you to try out, the fun just keep going. The content is so great, the game stays fresh from beginning to end.

What started off as a fresh and new adventure turned very quickly into an unwelcome slog through more and more eye searingly bright "kingdoms" that had more frustrating moments than fun.
The movement tech felt clunky, Mario felt too heavy and unresponsive, the button combos for doing some of the more advanced movement was the opposite of enjoyable, and when there were ice physics... just no... stop.

It is very clear from this game and BotW that Nintendo has a long way to go when it comes to developing engaging and captivating open world games, because this felt like a less charming Banjo Kazooie in a bigger, less planned out as a cohesive world, sandbox with little nuggets sprinkled throughout.
It was like being given a meatball sub, but more than half the meatballs were just cubes of bread.
None of the parts of each level flowed into the next, it was all very segmented, and some of the "Kingdoms" made me want to leave literally as soon as possible. The "Kingdoms" were so unmemorable that I cannot even recall the names of them, where as for other Mario games they are stuck in my memory forever because they were fun as heck.
All the floor is poison zone was the worst offender, I think I spent all of 15 minutes in that world and I never ever ever want to go back. And Lunchmeat land made me want to gouge my eyes out.

The only zone I actually enjoyed was, of course, New Donk City, where it was abundantly clear that it had the vast majority of development time spent on it. Out of all the worlds that was the only one where exploring flowed naturally into more exploring, jumping from rooftop to rooftop was fantastically fun, and that was the only zone I got more moons than I needed to just peace out.

None of the bosses provided even the slightest challenge, I just stood facing them and waggled my left or right hand, depending on what flavor of waggle I was feeling like at the time, and they all fell first try.

All in all I was very disappointed by the bland, repetitive and all in all uninspired game-play.
It's a good looking game, it is good for a bit of fun, kids will love it.
But it is sadly only just a good game, nothing great, nothing outstanding.

Each Nintendo console has a flagship Mario game, and usually is one of the best games for the system. Odyssey is no disappointment, certainly going to be considered one of the best Mario games and by extension, best video games period.

Odyssey is not a "hard" game or deep. You have your basic Mario premise, Bowser has kidnapped Peach and it's Mario's job to rescue her going world to world chasing Bowser (in this one Bowser is going to marry Peach, which is new). But the defining new game mechanic is Mario's hat. Originally Mario wore a hat so they didn't have to animate hair on the NES, but now his hat allows him to attack enemies and more importantly, take them over! By throwing your hat at a Goomba, a Hammer Bro, a Fish, a freaking Dinosaur Mario becomes said enemy, able to use all of their abilities.

It's by this mechanic that Mario opens up new sections of the Worlds, defeats the bosses, and you have a dozen different ways to traverse the World. There's no linear method to beat the World. Sure, there's goals, but you can hop over the walls, go around the back of the mountain, climb the stairs, whatever you want! The controls on Mario's quintisential jumping and platforming skills are very tight, though somewhat annoying that they are semi-motion controls (I'd prefer not at all), but that's my only gripe with the game.

It's a beautiful, fun adventure, easy enough for a beginner/amateur to beat, but challenging to the expert if you want to get EVERY Power Moon. It's a game that every Nintendo Switch player needs to play, and is almost worth getting the console just to play, but certainly the Switch is worth it just for Mario and Zelda.

Graphic and sound are great. They are not jaw droping but Nintendo consoles were always about games itself and not much about power. Still game look very nice and "mario like".

Story - well story is really simple.

Level design is AMAZING. You will find here everything and you will always discover something new. Like that you can throw a hat, make it spin and jump on it to launch yourself to places you were thinking are unreachable.

But if you want to go for 100% completion the game isn't unfair at all. Everything is doable. You're just asked to master the tight controls, which in itself is enjoyable. Every minute I play this game, I have a huge smile on my face, enjoying every minute. From the kingdom to the last, every moment is just a joy.

Mario controls better than ever before. Cappy is a great innovation to the series. Movement is much more varied than before, thus bringing a ton of creativity into how you can get from one place to the next.

    Spoilers from here on:

My two favorite levels have to be the final level of the main series after defeating Bowser and, by far my favorite level in this game and probably any game ever, is the festival at the end of New Donk City. The amazing song mixed with the incredible throwback game play truly made me emotional and close to the point of tears for a video game that, with respect to the game, has no right of doing. I have cried during two games before for different reasons. The Last of Us because of the raw drama and storytelling and Super Mario Odyssey because of the sheer beauty of the game and joy I have playing it.

That all being said, I genuinely think 2017 will go down as one of the best years Nintendo has ever had. From the success of the Switch to the grandiose Breath of the Wild to the joyful Mario Odyssey, this has been a great year for Nintendo. Even games that aren't as popular, like Splatoon 2, are still phenomenal games.

Nintendo has truly hit a home run in 2017.

The after game does introduce more challenging things... but not exactly exciting ones.

The game starts strong, the middle becomes rather boring and at times a drudge, and the ending is, OK I guess? It just doesn’t have the ingenuity of the Galaxy games, or the hectic multiplayer fun of 3D World. It’s not a bad game - Mario games at their worst are better than most of what else is out there - but it is a bit of a let down.

A few tracks get annoying due to the amount of time one will spend in a level trying to collect everything. The replayabilty of the game is quite high, because of the amount of collectibles. Expect to put in around 40-50 hours trying to get everything. The main story is around the 8-12 hour range. It is a great value for the $60 dollar price tag and well worth your money. If you own a Switch and you don't own this game, you are missing out on arguably the best software the system has to offer. This is a must buy! Expand

This game have some minor flaws. But the fun factor, replay value and other staff just don't let me give it score lower than 10. I'm 50 hours in and still playing and I still have fun. I wish that sequel will come out and will improve in some things tho. Graphics are great, but music is not on God level as Galaxy games.

This game is phenomenal. I love everything about it except these two complaints: 1, there is an unforgivable lack of checkpoints in some places, 2, the camera is broken and causes you about 40% of your deaths, and typically in an area without reasonable checkpoints. But it's such a great game otherwise.

It's 3D Mario to perfection. Amazing callbacks to Mario's past, gameplay with the right amount of challenge, pulling all the best things from SM64, Sunshine, 3DLand/World, and Galaxy/G2. Movement is fun, the visuals make me happy from start to finish.

I had great expectations about this game, which ultimately proved underwhelming.

The main quest is incredibly quick to complete, and I got no sentiment of progression through collecting the remaining moons. There are truckloads of moons just hanging around, most are not even a challenge to get (2 minutes apiece, tops). I also found the difficulty bar both too low for a seasoned gamer

I also found the difficulty bar both too low for a seasoned gamer such as myself, and too high for my 5 year-old son to complete, which is the worst of both world. Plus no dubbing means he can't play alone since he can't read yet.

This is definitely a good game, but by no means an unforgettable experience.

Mario Odyssey was a beautiful game with amazing worlds and tight controls. It is on the easier side of things, but it is a Mario title so I wasn't expecting it to be a challenge anyway. The way they used Cappy was great and made it second nature by the time you beat the game. Overall Nintendo really knocked it out of the park with their latest Mario title.

There is a heap of fun and joy to be found in the game although it remains very easy up until the end game. After that you get a heap more stuff to do but sadly it's split between the banally easy, the interesting and the slightly infuriating.

Level Design: 15/15 One of the major parts of the game. The game is linear if you want to just progress, but it seems huge despite the average sized maps if you are going to 100% or at least at your own pace.
Music: 10/10 Songs like Cascade Kingdom, Jump up Superstar, Wooded Kingdom, (Trying to avoid spoilers) Second to last Kingdom, and the ending song are just a few of the many good songs in this game. When you enter a 2D level, the 8-bit Remixes are just as good.
Battle System: 5/5 Lowered to 5 because it's simple but not confusing at all. With the capture ability you have many options for fighting. This is shown well in many of the unique boss fights in certain kingdoms.
Replayability: 10/10 Amazing replayability. However, if you 100%ed the game on your first run, it could remove some of it. You may want to replay using certain challenges, to fins more moons, to speedrun the game, try out different options etc.
Difficulty: 10/10 "The game is too easy" Yeah sure I want to see you attempt the Volleyball Challenge for 100 and the Final Level in the game. This game is easy if you want, and hard if you want. There are several easy moons but MANY more harder ones.
NPCs: 10/10 Really creative. From skeletons with hats to forks to humans, this game has many unique NPCs. The new bosses and enemies are also really unique and all have a different way to be beaten.
Graphics: 5/5 Graphics aren't everything, but this game has amazing graphics.
Length: 5/5 Again, the game is as long as you want it to be. You can breeze through the game, collecting just the amount of moons needed to progress through each kingdom (120 minimum are needed to complete the game, taking about 1-5 hours), or you can 100% the game, try to beat you record on one of the many challenges in this game, or simply take your time with it (about 45-72, 2-12, 15-25 hours respectively)
Exploration: 15/15 Out of 15 cause this is one of the main components of the game. The maps may be average-sized, but they seem HUGE. There are so many moons to be found. The game rewards you for being curious. There are MANY ways to get most of the power moons, and there are A LOT of moons.
Impact on the series: 10/10 Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are fan favorites for being an open, sandbox-like game with a lot to do. This game brings back those genres and it does not disappoint. With it being 7 years since the last sandbox style game, Super Mario Odyssey just leaves me wanting more.

Okay, I think most people would say that Nintendo has had a pretty damn amazing 2017: Mario Kart 8, Splatoon 2, Arms, Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild and now Mario Odyssey. That's an exclusive lineup of first party titles that any other publisher on earth would kill to have. It's the best year any publisher has had in a very, very long time...perhaps ever. All of those games are excellent, a few of them are game of the year contenders on their own, and Breath Of The Wild...well, I've written a long review where I tried, and failed, to get across in just 5000 characters how good a game it is. For me BotW is the greatest game ever made, so Nintendo would have had an incredible year even if it wasn't for all the other brilliant titles they've released.

In light of that, in light of the incredible run of form they're on, and in light of just how much I enjoyed the Mario Galaxy games - which are the only 3D mario games that Nintendo really got right - I was expecting...a lot. I bought a Switch for this(I played BotW on my Wii-U in case you were wondering) and I waited to unbox it on the day Odyssey was released and the game came in the post - all because it's an 'event' kind of game.
It genuinely pains me to say it, and I've been fighting against the feeling for a while now, but this is just nowhere near as brilliant as Galaxy 1 or 2. I'd have a hard time saying if it's as good as Super Mario 3D World. The problems are not that numerous but they are significant:

    - It's too easy. Simple as that. A lot of people have said it, and they're right.

    - The sensation of actually getting a moon is far less rewarding than getting a star(the moons are basically the Odyssey equivalent of stars from previous Marios) in Galaxy 1/2 or SM64. This is because there are over 800(!) of them. If you've played Breath Of The Wild think of it as the equivalent of collecting Koroks and nothing else- Koroks are fun, and they're a mild diversion in BotW, but to structure an entire game around them would not be enjoyable. And it isn't. Allied to that is the fact that some, even most, of the moons are as easy as finding a Korok. This touched on the problem of difficulty again.

    - But the difficulty is probably not the main problem. I could deal with it if it wasn't for the fact that the level design is so...uninspired. For anyone who's played either Mario Galaxy, even if you didn't like it as much ass I did, I'm pretty sure you'll be able to remember some piece of level design that impressed you, something that surprised you. For me those games were full of surprising, original, mind-bowing environments - I remember, for example, a level set in a house, where all the lights went off and a spotlight began moving through the place. As long as you stayed inside the spotlight you were okay but step outside and you died. Not because you couldn't keep up, or some enemy got you in the dark, but because the _only parts of the level that existed were the parts lit by the spotlight_ and if you wandered off you just fell into black nothingness. This allowed for a whole load of clever, on-the-fly challenges as you had to keep up with the spotlight. This was such a stunning level, so breathtakingly original, that I had to rewrite the previous bit three times before I could accurately convey what happened when you played it. There is nothing, absolutely nothing, in anything I've played so far that comes close to that level, or the many, many ones like it in Galaxy 1 and 2. The license to experiment that came with setting Galaxy in space and zero grav environments is lost in Odyssey, which is just flat progression from island-world to island-world.

    - Which leads me onto the final significant criticism - it's open world, which a lot of people like. Personally I don't think it works for Mario. Or at least Nintendo still haven't managed to make it work. When they put Mario in tight, focused, self-contained levels it is intense and imaginative and they can experiment with the design. There's no filler in the Galaxy games because they don't involve the constant wandering around and backtracking and empty spaces that all open-world games have. I fundamentally disagree with the idea of 3D Mario games being open-world - I think the twitch gameplay and imagination and focus and intensity of 2D Marios, which I grew up on and which I love, is diluted when it's transferred to an open world. The whole ethos of Mario is pure gameplay - it's not exploration and wandering about, and that kind of stuff just doesn't suit Mario, at least not as Nintendo have done it so far.

There are a plenty of good elements to Odyssey - the controls are very tight and some of the Cappy captures are...fun. And the costumes get a big thumbs up. But fundamentally it is just lacking in the starburst of imagination and breathtaking level design that makes Mario at his best the greatest video game character there is. I am disappointed.

There are a lot of things that Super Mario Odyssey does very well. It has the best visuals of any Mario game, it has the most unique gameplay mechanics, the best bosses, the most diverse environments, one of the better soundtracks. From a technical perspective it has almost no obvious flaws and the team at Nintendo deserves a lot of praise for what it accomplished. So why did I give it an 8 and not a 9 or 10? Basically, because there is more to a great game than technical achievements and a lack of flaws. This is probably the best year I can recall for games. The bar has been raised across the board. I gave this game an 8 because compared to the other great games this year it is shallow. Outside of its gameplay and production values it just isn't exceptional. I spent over 100+ hours on my first play through of Breath of the Wild same with Persona 5, those gave me more and left me with something. I beat the main story for Mario Odyssey in 2 days without a challenge. I am not even very good at Mario games but even I found the puzzles and platforming pretty mild compared to past entries. There are far more moons than there were stars in past Mario games but earning them is far simpler and many don't even require you to complete a challenge. Don't get me wrong, some of them are extremely fun but very few left me with a sense of accomplishment. I enjoyed the game a lot but compared to many of the other great games this year such as Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, etc. Mario Odyssey just lacks depth. The game is great and I recommend it to most people. in terms of fun factor it is excellent but it just lacks substance compared to other games that I put in the 9+ category.

Gameplay wise Mario Odyssey is masterful. The hat possession mechanic is amazing and definitely one of the most interesting gameplay mechanics that I have ever seen. The game does a great job of making each transformation unique and has multiple transformations that surprised me. In terms of Mario's base controls, they are very similar to past 3d entries but they are very precise and I found the controls to be even better than they were in Sunshine and Galaxy. Another great addition to the game is the fast travel system, it saves tons of time and makes moving around the levels very quick. Even the swimming controls, which have been pretty frustrating in the past I found alright in this entry. It is really nice that there is a use for coins, but the rewards are mostly cosmetic. It would have been cool if the costumes actually had a use beyond looks.

In terms of progression and story, this is way below average. The story is almost the same as the other Mario games. The one thing that Odyssey does story wise that I liked was the way that it connects Bowser's actions to each kingdom. The ending also has one creative twist that I thought was clever. The game progresses smoothly and never drags but it doesn't really stop to make many moments memorable either. It's fast and furious from start to finish. People often say that story doesn't matter in platformers, I disagree because other games have great gameplay and still have good story lines. People complain when Zelda's story sucks and take off points but Mario always gets a pass. A great story adds something to the game so it matters. If a great game with no story is compared to a game with great gameplay and a great story the game with both deserves the higher score. There are plenty of platformer games with better stories than this one. Donkey Kong 64, Psychonauts, Prince of Persia and even Banjo Kazooie all have better stories than this.

The worlds are pretty good but very few blew me away. There are a lot of them and usually each one had a few cool features but within an hour or so I usually found I wanted to move on to the next one.

Visually, this is the best Mario game by far and one of the best looking games of the year. Every material looks believable, the fx are great and well used, and some of the backgrounds are breath taking. The menus are simple yet appealing. This is a very cartoony game so it doesn't have the same level of detail as some of the games on the PS4 but everything looks clean and the level of detail is actually surprising for a game of this type. Nintendo did a great job giving every environment a unique look and focusing on clean designs.

In terms of sound design, the music is good and sometimes like in the Sand Kingdom, the music is surprisingly atmospheric. I really did like the sound design but I certainly wouldn't say it is one of the best of all time. Its good but it isn't in the same league as Ocarina of Time, Shadow of the Colossus, FFX, The Last of Us etc. Its good, very enjoyable I would say an 8 in sound design.

This is a great game and I can see why a lot of people think it is worthy of a 9+ but for me I want more than just random fun.

It, along with other great games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, make me not regret purchasing a Nintendo Switch in the slightest. Super Mario Odyssey is a charming love letter to the 3D platformer/collectathon genre that thrived in the 90s and 2000s, that anyone who grew up with will be touched by.

In it, the ever-intrepid ex-plumber Mario teams up with Cappy, a sentient (and shapeshifting) hat creature. They travel all over the world, and just maybe beyond, to save Princess Peach and Cappy's sister Tiara from an arranged marriage with Bowser. Mario and Cappy's travels will take them to a total of 17 different expansive locales, from the bleak, foggy, moonlit landscape of Bonneton, to the bizarre juxtaposition of nature and machine in the Steam Gardens, to the bustling metropolis of New Donk City. In each area, they'll need to collect Power Moons in order to power their ship enough to move on to the next area. Not exactly the most original plotline, but that isn't really ever expected from Mario games that don't start with "Paper" anyhow. The main focus in this series was always gameplay, and don't worry on that end: Odyssey delivers.

Much like FLUDD and the baby Luma from before, much of the gameplay revolves around Mario's latest companion. Unlike, say, FLUDD (disclaimer: I love Sunshine), Cappy feels like a natural extension of Mario's usual abilities. Cappy transforms Mario's signature hat, something that's been with him on every adventure for the past three decades, into a multipurpose tool you'll find yourself missing when you don't have it. With him on Mario's side, Mario has the ability to throw his hat in any direction he pleases, direct it or hold it in midair, and have it return back to his head. His hat can be used as a weapon against obstacles and small enemies, a convenient platform to jump off of in midair, a way to stop himself from falling for a convenient moment (much like the spin jump from Galaxy), a way to remotely collect coins that are just out of reach, and one more function that is by far the most interesting.

Perhaps Odyssey's main "gimmick", is that Cappy gives Mario the powers of a poltergeist. If something has a head, and that head isn't protected by a hat (things that do have hats can usually have them knocked off), throwing Cappy on to it will result in Mario's spirit flying into its body, and assuming direct control of it; the captured entity adopting his signature hat, eyes, and moustache. There's a total of 52 different entities that can be "captured", including Goombas, Cheep-Cheeps, an actual human "New Donker" who pilots an RC car, traffic cones, a giant slab of meat, frogs, manhole covers, a tree, a few different statues, the letters that make up Mario's own name, and an actual realistic tyrannosaurus rex. This capture mechanic is used in a wide variety of different ways. Capturing a Cheep-Cheep for instance will make you no longer have to worry about air underwater. Capturing specific objects or enemies might also work to your advantage in puzzles, platforming segments, and even boss fights. The second boss you fight, for example, involves capturing her pet Chain Chomp and slamming it into her face to deal damage.

Aside from Cappy, Mario's own moveset has gotten an upgrade, ensuring that the platforming is as fun as ever. All the iconic moves such as the backflip, sideways somersault, long jump, ground pound, and triple jump are still there; interspersed with new ones such as the ground pound jump, roll, and midair dive.

To put this short and to wrap up my opinion on it, Super Mario Odyssey is an excellent installment to the 3D Mario series, capable of standing tall and proud with all its forefathers, even Super Mario 64 itself. If you're a long-time fan of the series, you're doing yourself a great disservice skipping this. If you're not, this may be an excellent entry point. I've never even been motivated enough to write a review for something before this, but I just have to here. I just have to tell everyone how great this game is, I can't help myself.

The game is fantastic. There is something for everybody as it is easy to quickly go through the kingdoms and finish the game in a few hours but it is also possible to take your time and spend 10s of hours just collecting moons and coins. When I first saw this game in its announcement trailer, I was skeptical. But when Super Mario Odyssey released, those worries were all but destroyed. This game has amazing variety and really makes you feel like you're straight back in the Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine. I give this game a perfect score and I really recommend it!

This game is fantastic. The best game of this decade so far. It's the successor of Mario 64, and it beats the predecessor by far. Super Mario Odyssey is the best 3D-Plattforming Adventure ever created!

It's amazing how this game not only lived up to the hype, but surpassed it by any and all measures. The graphics are great, the visuals are popping and unique, and it has the overall creativity and great game-play Nintendo has come to be known for. This game was so good it was the only reason I created this account, and you definitely get your bang for your buck. A definite must-play.

Great Graphics, scaling game play difficulty, easy to learn hard to master, vivid soundtrack and great level design. Nintendo brought forth an incredible new addition to the mario 3d series and it is as great as everyone says. It deserves the Game of the Year award more than any other game out there.

Mario Odyssey was a extremely enjoyable game from start to finish, and beyond. It's booming with creativity and intuitive design. The "Cap"ture ability is an extremely fun tool to play with. The game we got was worth the wait and anticipation. A Nintendo Switch is worth it just for this game. The movement is phenomenal, making unintentional skips and finding reward for it. It has an average difficulty, however, the game supplements this with not being punished too much for mistakes. I think it should be a little harder, but it is an excellent game for newcomers to the 3D platforming genre. Overall, I highly recommend this game. Expand

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
