The best Mario of ever time. I didn't feeling like this since Super Mario 64 when I was a child. Nintendo has innovated in the world of video games.
My congratulation to everyone who loves video game because this game is a art piece.

I have played hundreds of video games over the years, so nowadays it takes a game to be really special to hold my interest to the very end, which explains my big backlog of unfinished games. Judging by how I played this game for over 10 hours straight with maybe one or two breaks in between, I would say this is a great game. Yes, the game isn't very long or difficult, even when I stopped to smell the flowers and collect extra moons, but it feels so great to control Mario and there are a million ways to do things and get to places. The game is so full of surprises, particularly a certain nostalgia-inducing post-game costume that you can unlock. The graphics are mostly fine even though it's in 900p and the city level can look pretty bad. When I finished the game, I just wanted more; there's some neat post-game content here, but it's nothing too crazy. Overall, just by the amount of joy this game has given me, I'd stay it's still a 10. it's the best exclusive title for the Switch. This year has been so packed of fun games that this would already be a good game to end it on, but there's still more coming. Here's hoping Xenoblade 2 lands that knockout blow in December. Expand

Super Mario Odyssey is a 10 out of 10, as you know, Mario is back! And btw his hat gets stomped on by Bowser who will have a wedding with Peach even if he kidnapped her a lot of times in other games? Anyways the point is the city is one of the best maps in Odyssey, I don't have the game yet but can't wait to play it!

Damn was I hyped about this game. I really loved the first 3d Mario there was: Mario64.

I expected way more levels, way more rewarding mechanics and in general way more on everything. I believe Nintendo was too focused on details and design. I wished they would have put as much effort and challenge into the game as there was in Mario64. Nevertheless its still a solid and good game,

Nevertheless its still a solid and good game, but not what the hype was promising

I agree fully with Gatsby's review and want to quote it:

"This is going to hurt me more than it will you. i was hyped for this game, Mario 64 is one of my favorite games. So you can imagine my excitement when i got this game early, what you can't imagine is my dissapointement.

The Length: It's disappointingly short, it took me a few hours and now all thats left to do is collect moons. But for what? The moons don't feel rewarding, they are a chore. You get them for everything, its almost like they wanted you to think that there is alot to do by adding hundreds of moons to level but it does not feel like it, It's an illusion of content. You would criticize any other game that dares to be this short, why not this?

The Levels: They are bland and sometimes straight up ugly to look at. This game is not openworld like some people want to make you believe, the levels are small and incoherent. It feels like they put everything in this game that was cut from other marios.

The Bosses: Fun but easy, like almost everything in Odyssey. It's the usual "Do a thing 3 times" boss mechanics, with every boss. Some bosses look like they are straight up out of Sonic, yes i said it.

Capture Mechanic: This is a fun one and the best part of the game.

This all sounds terrible but it's not that bad, it's just not what i expected and after seeing all the praise im baffled. This is not the best game ever, or the generation, it's not even the best mario game of the year, that's Mario+Rabbids. I feel like those reviews are based on nostalgia and because it's nintendo. I wish we could stop with this praise mentality and focus on the good and bad. There is no one out there that can tell me that there isn't just as much bad as good in Mario Odyssey. "

This is the Mario game of your dreams, and it´s going to be more or less impossible to top moving forward.
Together with Cappy, Mario's moveset is now complex enough and simple enough to satisfy hardcore and casual players alike, and that´s not even counting all the different creatures you´ll get to "capture" and maneuver throughout the game ("capturing" being the new gimmick introduced in Odyssey, where Mario will gain control over anything he throws his cap at.)
Odyssey is full of charming references to the past, and just as full of bizarre new surprises.
This game is not just a strong GOTY contender; for me, it´ll have to combat Bloodborne itself for game of the decade. That´s how incredible this game is.
    Get it.

I mean yes, this is a good game. Very good in fact. A really solid, highly polished 3D platformer that ticks a lot of Mario boxes, but I can't be the only one who sees the very obvious flaws here?

Like the difficulty level, maybe? I'm not a "git good" type of guy, but this is very, very simple throughout and takes very few chances with the difficulty curve. I get that this makes it accessible to all and that's the main aim of a family title like this, but aside from interesting game mechanics (which are numerous to be totally fair), the difficulty makes the whole game feel one-paced. You'd expect the bosses to provide the challenge at the end of a level maybe, but no - they are by and large the same uninspired 3-hit-and-done affairs from Mario 64, which was the biggest weakness of that game - even if you're a rabid Mario fan, surely you can admit that these should have been improved big time by now?

Or maybe a bit of critique about the moons? You know, how unlike the stars in Mario 64, where they were a legit objective and felt like an achievement grabbing each one, the moons here are tossed around like candy and it's harder to NOT collect them? The game would have been infinitely more enjoyable if the moons had more of a point and there were far fewer of them - yes, I get that it's a collect-a-thon, but even Yooka-Laylee and, more obscure but still very good, Poi got this balance better.

The abundance of moons plays in to my next big gripe with it - the length of the thing at its' core. Yes, collecting as many moons as possible artificially extends the game, but you don't have to (and indeed I can't see why you'd want to), and you can beat the game pretty quickly as a result.

The levels themselves are hit and miss. New Donk City is fantastic, whereas others feel cut and paste jobs; like they are tickboxing what should be in a Mario game and going through the motions.

I know the above makes it look like I hate the game, but I really don't. It really is well polished, the controls are sublime, the outfit changes are inspired and add a myriad of options to game play, the trainsitions to 2D are flawless and add an extra level of depth, the visuals are the best since Sunshine and the whole thing does a tremendous job of building a pseudo-open-world. It is very much a very good game.

But an instant classic? The best Mario ever? It's... really not. Honestly. It's good enough to recommend, but people have gone way, way over the top on praise for it. For the Switch itself, it's not as good as Zelda: BotW, and it's arguably not even as good as Mario+Rabbids. In terms of Mario games, it's not as good as Sunshine, 64, 3, World... It's just a very good yet second tier Mario game. If you love Mario, you'll love this - just don't go in expecting to be blown away, which is the danger if you're taking the frankly odd review scores into account.

It was as if I stepped into a portal to my childhood. I highly recommend the "single joy-con in each hand" motion control scheme. The motions controls feel so intuitive and really enhance the gameplay. Cappy serves as a great sidekick, with his boomerang and capture abilities providing a refreshing take on the classic 3D Mario Mechanics. Visually, it is a gorgeous game. It maintains 60 fps consistently in both mobile and docked. There seems to be a variety of different environments in this game, unlike Super Mario Galaxy and Sunshine. While those games followed a common theme, Odyssey takes influence from Super Mario 64 and Super Mario World in that there is a (Spoilers) desert world, ghost world. tropical world, metro world, etc. The music is phenomenal. I recommend that everyone use a headset to truly appreciate it. I had chills running down my spine once I heard the theme from the Switch Presentation Trailer for Odyssey. No other franchise has made as big of an impact on the gaming industry as Mario. He is the Micky Mouse of gaming. This game can be enjoyed by anyone. Enthusiast gamers. Father/Mother playing with his or her kids. Teenagers. Anyone. I had lost faith in Nintendo during the Wii U generation. They have absolutely blown me away with putting out masterpieces such as Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey. These 2 games make the Switchh worth it. I must also add that this year has been incredible for gaming. Besides Mario and Zelda, we had Persona 5, Cuphead, Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier, Nioh, Divinity. Instead of debating Game of the Years. We should declare 2017 as the Year of the Games. I hope everyone enjoys these games as much as I have. Expand

Like me, you're scrolling through this and are seeing 10, 10, 10, ..., 10. it goes on.
This is why I created an account; to give newcomers an UNBIASED review of this game.

Yes, I play many, many games not limited to just one console and I love Nintendo and Mario games.

    First, who are you?
    Yes, you!
Don't just look at the scalled up reviews of fanboys and fangirls, see the 10/10 score and thing, "I'm going to love this game! I have to buy it!"

Stop, just stop. WHO are you?

    Do you seek any challenge?
After playing open world games do you have an unrealistic expectation that this game will be immersive?
Are you looking for story, for reason, for thinking outside the box?

If you are a person which greatly appreciate the above, only rose tinted glasses will keep ou from being disaapointed in this game. Because, if you are that person, you should be dissapointed.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is an underwhelmingly easy game devoid of any real push to continue playing and drive you forward. There is, of course, no story and the environments could not be less immersive; obstacles appear to be cut-n-pasted there, 'just cause'. The worlds are VERY small and disjointed.

So is Mario Odyssey bad? Absolutely not!
BUT, it depends on WHO you are.

Are you seeking a game with a playful setting and gorgeous art-style? Are you looking for a game which you can pick up and play after a long days work? are you looking for a game accessible to anyone and enjoyable to anyone? Are you seeking a game to pander to your rediculous side and creativity (only in art-style)?

If so, this is the game for you. You will love it.

    A few pointers overall:
Mario is a beautiful, fun and creative game which everyone can enjoy. If you play any sort of game even semi regularly though, you'll fell like a god playing it. The puzzles are completely underwhelming and predictable, and the only time you'll die will be from a misplaced jump.

This game is very surprisingly small. The worlds you go to are very inconsistent. Most are very small and do not excite you; they are a chore and bring down the quality of the game. Other worlds, however, are amazing and are definitely the right size. Unfortunately, these worlds are few and far between. Don't expect to play the game longer than 25 hours before you feel you should put it down and play something else. Multiplayer is quite a gimmick.

Regardless of who you are, this game will never reach 10/10 if you are being unbaised.
It's important to think critically and fairly.

Should you buy it??? That's why you're here isn't it???

It depends on who you are!

It is a fun game. I can say that. I enjoyed it.

At first when Nintendo showed Mario Odyssey I was worried because of the "look". It had a more realistic and less bright and artsy vibe. But I was very wrong and the game has so much going on and the art-style may be the best part of the game for me personally. As of just finishing the main plot.. Its time to give my take. And it is filled with almost zero complaints. Nintendo is always trying something fresh but not make things awkward and Cappy is a genious addition which allows so much freedom and abilities I never thought I would want in a Mario adventure... But now I cant live without!!

Visuals: Amazing to say the least.. The way Nintendo is doing this FPS optimization with games like Odyssey and Splatoon 2 is something I really enjoy. Keeping a 60FPS on the action in game is very nice and adds to the overall look and feel. The worlds are stunning.. some take a more realistic vibe with real world creatures/humans.. while others are filled with gorgeous ice caverns, temples, candy worlds.. and so much more. Costumes are a blast to grab and while they are mostly cosmetic, some open events and secrets. Simply put the game is what anyone should expect from Mario and the minds over at Nintendo.

Gameplay: 60 FPS achieved with Nintendo's fluctuating progressive meter.. using this method as stated above makes not only a more smooth gameplay experience but adds to the visuals as everything is fluid. Mario moves with all the classic abilities and even adds some new combos off classics such as the butt pound. All Kingdoms offer new gameplay mechanics with the use of Cappy and some are genious. Controls are really spot on and mario feels really well when controlling using either the joy-cons attached or unattached gives you extra motion control options. I chose to use the pro controller and turn off motion controls in the options. I still had to use motion shaking for climbing poles and such.

Sound: Sound is very well done. Everything you would come to expect from a major Nintendo release. The main Odyssey song even has the lyrics printed on the inside cover of the game case. There are many throwback and classic tunes about the kingdoms... Enjoy and check every area.

Overall 10/10 Mario Odyssey is a game that will take around 15 hours to check out most Kingdoms but the levels have so much to collect that you cant possibly see everything as beating the final boss will unlock each Kingdom and another anywhere from 10-50 or more moons are available to collect all with new characters and puzzles. GO GET THIS NOW!!

I am not a "critic." I am a gamer. I have played every major Mario game since the original Mario Bros. 1983 arcade game (the NES version, anyway), and then from then on the Goomba squashing Mario we came to know and love as the first ever mascot of gaming (after Pac-Man, of course - though I wasn't around then).

After playing the Galaxies, I did not think Nintendo could ever make me love Mario again. Between Sunshine and Galaxy 1 and 2, the traditional Mario (Mario Bros. Wii) fell by the wayside for me... Sure, it was fun, but it just didn't have the creativity of the other three games. And then the Wii U happened... and everyone hoped for a Galaxy 3..... and we got a Mario Bros. Wii reiteration, and then a "3D" gimmick of that same formula. These were fun, sure, but they were a sort of mundane fun... something you did not really feel like playing again after winning.

(I personally think the Wii U was Nintendo's grace period to figure out what they needed to do, with EVERY franchise, including Mario, because they were screwing up. And boy am I glad they figured it out.)

Mario Odyssey is the game that could not be a Wii U game. This much is clear. The fluidity of animation without frame drops, the wonderful controls, the seamless flow of throwing Cappy and using him and jumping on him, the wonderful return to actually great music... Look, the truth is, as you play this game, you will find not just remnants of Mario in it, but also remnants of Banjo-Kazooie's little side quests.

I don't want to spoil anything, but I will end on an honest note: if you hated the specificity of controls for that not-so-great Zelda game, Skyward Sword, you will not like the controls here. However, if you give them a chance, you will notice they are much more responsive (the Joy-Cons have much better technology in them than the MotionPlus Remote did).

If you loved Mario Sunshine, Mario 64, Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, Banjo-Kazooie, and even Mario 3D World, you will truly enjoy this game and rage a little here and there at some of the more difficult places. As for the difficulty of the game, it isn't difficult as a whole. A few people are upset that this game doesn't use a "Life" system; it uses coins. Many of them thought this stupid, but the truth is, you NEED those coins for some of the funner factors of the game (no spoilers), so it does not pay (ha! pun) to lose them by continuously dying - I have no idea why anyone who actually played the game and understood the coin system thought that it was stupid, but that's that.

All in all, I have to give this game a 10/10, because the only shortcoming is that it isn't longer - and yet, no game can last forever; not all games can be Breath of the Wild. For Mario, especially, this is a good thing. The pacing of the game is enough to keep you in wonder, and that's what all great Mario games have done since he landed in 3D space.

It was very short and easy, the motion controls were a bit wonky. There was plenty of missed potential, rewards for completion are pretty weak and bosses were repeated plenty of time, however this game completely makes up for it with all the amazing mechanics, the amazing control and just the whole experience together. What I want to know is why did yall believe it was going to b "like" Mario 64? Sure it was returning to the classic semi-open world (yes semi because its not a full open world game) of 64 and Sunshine but everything else is different. They got rid of the objective based mission structure of 64 and Sunshine (64- Levels Sunshine-Episodes) for a more pure exploration based structure. Now I enjoy the game for what its trying to accomplish instead of expecting what its going to b based on past history, because if u do, of course your going to b disappointed. The fun and challenge in this game is in the exploration of finding all the Power Moons, that was kind of similar to what 64 and Sunshine did but theirs was more "linear" about it. Now I can understand this type of almost non-objective exploration, collect-a-thon gameplay isn't for everyone and feel like a waste of time but that's what the game is trying to accomplish and it does it pretty well. (also feels less like a chore imo than the classic ol' collect-a-thon platformers of old) I say take your time in each kingdom and explore, if u rush through it only meeting the minimum requirement of moons to get to the next kingdom then of course its going to b short, slow down people and enjoy the journey, not the destination. The capturing mechanic makes the blandish but beautiful worlds sooo much more interesting, you can capture your run of the mill goombas and also you can capture other things you would never expect. If you don't like the capture idea you probably won't love the game, that's the biggest aspect of it so if you think it's some gimmick you definitely should run from this game. Cappy also makes the game a lot more spicy, he is a cute loveable character that is the F.L.U.D.D of Odyssey. Except he's a lot less controlling and is not overpowered.
My only gripes are that the main story is entirely too easy to run through, the requirements are way too low but there's so many moons per level that doing your first 100% run could take you a hefty amount of time. Also the boss battles are way too easy, they don't get hard til after the main game, you can really beat the bosses in the first few tries including the final boss.
But the finale is amazing, you do something you would never expect to do, and a lot of stuff unlocks in the kingdoms after the boss so the end of the game is far after the final boss.
Yes there are some small things that put a small damper on the game but that's a small price to pay for all of the good things you will experience. Super Mario Odyssey is one of Mario's best adventures yet and it is the switch's best title thus far!

I think this game is really fun, a bit on the easy side but after you beat it, there are challenges that will be sufficient for people who want them. If you have a switch, definitely get this, if you don't have one, this game makes a decent case as to why you might want to pick one up.

The soundtrack in my opinion is the best of any game this year and, when paired with the level designs, create some seriously unique and memorable atmospheres. However I have to say, if you are looking for a challenge you may want to look elsewhere as it's mostly a breeze to play with only the odd few tricky challenges which can be avoided at no cost. Except for one. When taking control of a bullet bill, I can't do a full 180 by holding one direction because the game expects you to change your direction on the control stick to keep on changing in the same direction you were already turning. So thats annoying. Now, I have to admit, the Death System here fixed previous issues but made a new one too. When you die you only lose 10 coins, and when you die without coins, you just come back normally. No negatives. But sometimes you die and spawn waaaaaaaaay far back away from where you died and you have to do a bit of backtracking. So that's also annoying. The bosses are also overused and when you fight them the next time they don't really add anything important. Oh yeah, and it has some nice easter eggs too. Spoiler alerts are stupid, this game can't be spoiled. When you beat the game, you can unlock peach's castle and you will find the courtyard from Mario 64 in a secret door that can only be opened by becoming SM64 Mario! Love that. I just can't give this game a 10 because of some annoyances that turn me off a little bit. For example, while going through the desert, there is too much space for its own good because you can't really do anything besides move while you go to the next spot. It's a little too big for its own good. There is also an annoying boss rush mode where when you die, you spawn back and I can see on the ship that the bosses I had defeated were not there but then I had to re fight all the other bosses that I had killed. Very annoying. Now then, the graphics... Beatiful in docked, sometimes a little blurry in portable mode. Docked always looks amazing no matter what. In portable mode, sometimes the game gets a little bit TOO blurry, and then the resolution jumps up then down and up and down. Also, shadow edges look like crap. Now then, the performance... Beautiful in both portable and docked. The game uses dynamic resolution to maintain 60fps almost all the times. The only time I noticed it drop was for a few seconds in new donk city. It also makes the Switch REALLY hot and with it close to me, I could hear the fan going LOUD. The things you do for moons is also somewhat overused. There are multiple places throughout the game that make you put down your hat and do some platforming without your hat. This was fine the first few times, but after maybe the 4th time, I felt it wasn't needed. BUT, the best part is... It's optional! Go find another moon or something, do what you want. Yeah, this game is pretty amazing. Expand

The readiness with which the game spits Power Moons at you diminishes the feeling of accomplishment somewhat, with upwards of 60 of them on some levels -- but there's enough of them to keep completionists scouring for quite some time, and multiple opt-in hint systems to keep you from getting stonewalled.

It's less remarkable a shift and revitalization of the IP as Breath of the Wild was, there are some pronounced annoyances, but as another solid entry in the mainline open-world Mario series, it's hard not to recommend.

Art style wise, everyone was concerned about those screenshots with mario next to a real human. They still look bad, they still aren't explained in any meaningful way. There are other spots too. You get a T-Rex and everything else is cartoony mario style, then this jurassic park style T-Rex just laying there. It's jarring. It doesn't fit. Much of the game is this way, where random assets look like they were done by someone with totally different art direction.
Controlling cappy feels more of a pain than a bonus. Two player mode doesn't make it any better, controls there also feel weird and unintuitive. It feels very gimmcky. Honestly since mario 64 they've tried to do weird random gimmicks like this and every time it feels forced.
On that point, why is there a world of hat people, who live in hat houses and fly hat airships? If cappy just happened to be some kind of magical hat I could buy into that, but a whole nation of hat people with a hat economy and hat children just seems really weird to me. The fact their world was nearly all black and white didn't seem to make sense. I thought when I first started it was meant to be some kind of after life and mario had died and had to fight his way back to life. I was disappointed immediately.
I don't need all these wacky new characters, or rabbit people. They could have been easily replaced with the koopa children and served the same purpose while reusing characters players know instead of introducing new ones that we'll likely never see again. There are so many weird random characters I get excited when I finally see a koopa troopa trying to hit me with a fireball, or a piranha plant snapping.
That all said, the levels are fun, if disjointed. You get a steady drip of things to find and unlock which is cool. None of them feel like places though, they all feel like amusement parks. Where I go ride to ride to beat a challenge and get a moon. Also, I don't know why we are collecting moons now. Stars seemed thematically correct before and only changed for the same of being different, which really feels like what a lot of this game is about.

I'm really sorry to be saying this at all, but unfortunately this game has failed to live up to the months of hype it has built up, and is a low point for the 3D Mario series, only exceeding 3D World.

An awful camera, forced motion controls, some sudden loss in graphical quality, miniscule worlds, very low difficulty and a gameplay gimmick that wears thin far too quickly are just the tip of the iceberg. Perhaps the most tragic error though is how nannying the experience is.

Collecting a Shine Sprite, or Power Star in previous titles felt highly rewarding because it signifies the end of a challenging gauntlet of platforming variety. In Odyssey, Moons are absolutely everywhere, and unlike, for example, the Shrines in Breath of the Wild, there are simply too many Moons with little gaps between them. Positive reinforcement is one thing, but forcing it every few seconds is a trick that the average player will quickly see through.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 can rest easy - SMO in no way betters upon its prequels and should be avoided unless you are a die-hard fan of the series, and can look past the many flaws

The adventure begins in the midst of a battle between Mario and Bowser that ends with – gasp! – the latter defeating the former and making off with Princess Peach, whom he intends to marry just as soon as he can gather everything he needs to put on a top notch wedding. In many ways, Super Mario Odyssey is the weirdest that Mario has been in years. The game takes place across more than a dozen Kingdoms, many of which feature some of the sorts of themes you might expect from a Mario title – ice and lava, forests and spooky levels full of darkness.
The problem about this game, ITS TOO EASY for veteran players, the lack of challenge are everywhere and the Bowser's formula is kinda annoying yet. There's a constant back and forth between education and challenge as the game teaches its mechanics. At first, discovery is the game's reward to you – then challenge becomes its own reward as Odyssey tests that discovery. This is what Mario has done for 30 years more effectively than almost any other franchise or idea, and it's just as successful in Odyssey. It's present in the platforming sections, which avoid the mistakes of other games deftly (most of the time), but the purest articulations of that philosophy are in Odyssey's boss fights. But if that’s the worst complaint to be levelled at Super Mario Odyssey, it’s in pretty good shape. Indeed, one might go so far as to call it one of 2017’s essential gaming experiences. It will remind you of everything you’ve ever loved about Nintendo platforming games while simultaneously creating new Mario memories you’ll cherish for years to come. If you needed a reason beyond Zelda to invest in a Switch, this ought to suffice.

This is not a traditional Mario, its a pseudo open world game where you search for hidden moon stones. Some are hidden, some are in hard to reach places, some are quests and some are held by bosses. So far no mushrooms or fire flowers instead you have a form of hit points and throw your hat to attack like flower power.

As an adult the game is quite easy. having 3 or 6 hit points allows for many mistakes and even if you die the penalty is very small. There is no life limit and you re-spawn at your last checkpoint, which there are plenty of. In fact since its an open world game and you often have to back track to explore other paths, sometimes dying is welcome.

Boss battles so far have been quite easy. Deaths have only come from misplaced jumps into pits or "camera" deaths where you cant see whats going on because the camera angle is fighting you.

There is a "shake" controller mechanic that allows for special moves and auto targeting. There is no non-motion version of this control, even if you turn motion controls off. Fortunately so far the game is so easy that this mechanic can be considered optional. If you plan to use the shake mechanic it makes the game difficult to play in switch tablet mode and found my self struggling to balance the tablet on my lap while holding the controllers. Instead now I opt to play on the television

All in all the game is fun to play though not very challenging. If you are looking for a relaxing game that you can spend hours exploring then this is great. I feel this game does not stand up to Nintendo high expectations and doesn't provide an adult challenge. Its a good game but falls short of greatness.

Just getting it yesterday (on release date), I believe this game is amazing to its core and everything around it. the controls are sound, music refined, but most importantly, the gameplay shines like a burning star. It retains elements of the classic 3d mario titles yet has its own style and structuring. Without a doubt my game of the year, even surpassing breath of the wild.

I've been playing Super Mario games since I got the Mario/Duckhunt NES combo in 1987. SMO hit the nail on the head for what I expect a Mario title to be. This is the best Mario game since Mario 64. Galaxy was a great series too, but this game surpasses both of those games. Way to go Nintendo.

One good thing I can say is that the gameplay feels solid: a spiritual successor to Mario 64 (where IMO Sunshine / Galaxy fell short). The Cappy mechanic is great.

Finally a fresh flagship Mario on the Switch. A good showcase for the system. But it's strictly casual.

Super Mario Odyssey is likely meant to be Mario's version of Breath of the Wild, with it being a big game with lots to do. And I'm not going to beat around the bush; Super Mario Odyssey was amazing. While I'm giving it a ten out of ten, I'm not going to say it's perfect; as my only gripe with the game is that the plot is way too short and kinda easy to tackle. But while the plot is shortSuper Mario Odyssey is likely meant to be Mario's version of Breath of the Wild, with it being a big game with lots to do. And I'm not going to beat around the bush; Super Mario Odyssey was amazing. While I'm giving it a ten out of ten, I'm not going to say it's perfect; as my only gripe with the game is that the plot is way too short and kinda easy to tackle. But while the plot is short and simple, that is merely the door to the game itself, which is collecting a grand total of 600 Power Moons. I feel like the game's story was downplayed for a reason; to emphasis on the exploration aspect and Moon collecting. And while I still have many Power Moons to collect, I don't need to one hundred percent this game to say that it was fantastic all the way.

The capture mechanic the game takes on opens up a ton of new options for Mario to progress through worlds. From smashing blocks as a Hammer Bro to swimming through magma as a Lava Bubble to collecting a tower of Goombas to meet a female Goomba, Mario has more options than ever. It's a really cool feature, even if it does feel a bit overpowered at times.

The worlds are plentiful, rivaling that of Super Mario 64 and easily suppressing the game in terms of collectables for each world. While it feels like the game simply hands you Power Moons for the simplest of tasks, you have to get used to the patterns of where they appear. That means ground pounding almost everything, throwing you cap at anything and breaking anything. Moons can literally be anywhere and that's where the challenge aspect comes in; some Moons won't be easy to find. While it may just feel like an enormous version of Super Mario Galaxy 2's Green Star challenge, if you love exploring worlds and discovering these kinds of secrets, it'll keep you busy for a long time and if you enjoy it, there's no problems in it, is there?

Looking past the game's short story, Super Mario Odyssey really lives up to the hype it had. While it may not truly feel like the nostalgic Super Mario 64, it still does a good job at following in it's footsteps. The worlds are fun to explore, the capture mechanic makes it even more fun to explore and the amount of Power Moons means this isn't a game you'll one hundred percent in a day. But if you like a game that big, then this is definitely going to be a fun experience. Mario hit the Switch in a big way and this will likely go down as one of his best adventures yet.

I love this game. It's fun, enjoyable, and an all around good experience. But there are a few gripes I have with this game that make me not rate this a 10. The motion controls are very wonky at points. For example, sometimes when you try to do a spin throw, you throw your cap up or down, or vice versa. The camera is slightly annoying at points. The game boasts beautiful scenery and colors in the levels, along with great music and innovative gameplay. Playing through the game doesn't feel repetitive unless you try to collect all 800+ moons with travelling through each kingdom and even though the game may remind you of previous games like Super Mario 64, Sunshine and Galaxy the addition of the Capture feature with your trusty sidekick Cappy adds a whole new dimension to the Mario franchise. So you will never not be surprised and you will find yourself returning to kingdoms to look for easter eggs and hidden secrets for you to discover.

I would definitely recommend anyone looking into buying a Switch to purchase one. Nintendo have had a great start to the year with BotW, Splatoon 2, ARMS and now Super Mario Odyssey and the future is bright for them.
