You can learn some advanced combo jump technics but it is not so necessary as you can play with or without it. Levels load time is ok. Almost no bugs in the game. The game will take only 7 MB of additional space on your device if you bought a physical copy. Well done, Nintendo! Expand

This game is one of its kind Mario Odyssey takes open world games to the next level with platforming unique worlds and bosses and there is so much exploring after the main story with moons to collect in much harder difficulty those can be done with the help of cappy with many unique captures and so much more

I personally prefer the more linear Marios, but there’s no denying that this game is a modern masterpiece in every way. The animations are lively, the worlds are well designed, and Mario’s move set is a ton of fun. Great game.

Really great game, but man is it repetitive. How many times have you played this story... in this exact format? Basically I’m trying to say: don’t get this game because of the story or because of the levels or mechanics. Get this game because it’s one of the most quality time wasters you can buy right now, meaning it’s straight up fun for a while... but that’s it.

A wonderful game through, with each area feeling different and memorable on both aesthetic and gameplay aspects.
Not much of a story, but it is as you expect from a Mario game, not plot but lots of character to every little thing.
The music in this game is a bop. Highly climatic tracks that are fun to listen to even outside of the game, but also fit their moments tremendously.

Gameplay-wise, it's the best Mario has moved thus far. Cappy (the ghost in Mario's cap) makes for a great addition to moth movement and combat, as well as introducing the possession ability that is the main draw of this particular game over other Mario titles. Each enemy/obstacle that can be possessed and controlled offers unique abilities, or funny secrets, that add a lot to the game's enjoyment.
Overall this is a must-play for the Switch, no doubt about it, it's easily a masterpiece for the Mario series as a whole.

Super Mario Odyssey is a game that has pushed 3D Mario Back where it should be, and that place is large open world experiences, and simple linear segments combined. The settings are very unique and and the fact that this game was made for both casual players and speed-runners is so cool. The game is a bit too easy for my liking, but that shouldn't be a reason for not to play this game.

Its a modern mario game. Even though half of the 1000 moons are easy to get, collecting them all still gives you something to do. There are even some challenging stars to get as well. If you feel you're a hardcore gamer, this is more casual, but still if you want all the moons, will give you enough game time to be worth the $60.

Another thing I don't like however is how many power moons feels shoehorned into this game. In Mario 64, there was always a puzzle or platforming challenge needed to obtain the star and 100% it. In this one, most of them feel like filler to stretch the game out longer than it actually is.

Other than the cons, this game does put a smile on anyone's face especially when you reach New Donk City which is my favorite part of the game. There are still lots of things to have fun in this one. If you own a switch and haven't played it then get on it!

-The music are good but since you don't get booted out of the world when you find a power moon, it means you can stay 30 minutes in the same stage if you want, meaning that you'll hear the 2 minutes soundtrack a loooot during that time of exploration. And that will make you bored of the melody quite faster, which is kinda sad.

-Litterally a third of all the power moons (so around 300) feels like they are just there to fill the game. A lot of them are just impossible to find if you don't go search on the internet. So yeah, it rewards you for exploring, but also punish you for exploring 1h a damn power moon and not finding it because it's ridiculously hidden without any clues.

I also think the story could have been thrown out at that point since it's totally useless. I would have prefer a simple ''find everything to repair X thing'' because the marriage thing is lame ( and so outdated, come on Nintendo).

Te game is not really difficult if you only want to finish it, which is good, given that it's made for children, but it can get difficult if you want. The gameplay is obviously almost perfect, the movement is great and allows for crazy stuff. Graphically it was really fantastic, a really fun game world although NPC design was rubbish.

Music, with the exception of the end of New Donk City level, which everone knows and is a fantastic song, I literally can't remember the music to this game.

Gameplay, I found the controls weren't my favourite and occasionally a wall next to me would fill my entire screen and block my view at times causing me to manuever, which in some levels was really annoying. Just something grated on me a bit with the controls and made it feel very sluggish.

OK, so my review is probably up around 7/10, so why 5/10? I base all of my reviews on a fun to cost ratio and the fun just wasn't there. Here are the downsides.

A good few of the levels were boring and not very nice in design. Felt like they were fillers to add length to the game.

The whole game felt very fetch questy. Instead of typical platformer action it was a permanent moon quest. Being told find more moons to move on but I've been all over this level and bored of exploring it now - tough, go find more moons.

I was so excited when I got to New Donk City but I didn't enjoy playing the level (until the end). When I got to the end of the level though it was amazing and I remember being shocked at how brilliant and fun it was.

New Donk City felt like an amazing game end finale but it wasn't and going back to normal levels after that was totally deflating and I was starting to want the game to end. I wanted to complete it and I did and it just dragged from this point. I think I may have scored higher if they skipped straight from New Donk to the last level and made a shorter game that didn't drag.

Again like New Donk City, the last level was amazing, I won't spoil it but it was a grand excecution of imagination again but when the game finished it just put a sort of new level and boss challenges and left it feeling like I had more to do and uncompleted, I was getting too bored to play more and the completion that was satisfying and funny, now felt incomplete again, I found myself running around the end world wishing it wasn't there.

I don't think the levels were as much fun as Mario Galaxy and it didn't have the frantic, fast fun of Mario 1 and 3. It got tiresome and felt repetitive as the objectives were tons of mini fetch quests and not level completion.

I feel a bit mean rating a 5 because two of the level ends, were two of my favourite moments in gaming and the ideas and production were out of this world but two perfect monents and great ideas didn't make the entire rest of the game fun. If those two brilliant parts didn't exist this probably would have been a 3/10.

A game filled with great ideas, totally hampered by boring, repetitive gameplay. A shame really, so much lost potential.

"Odyssey", however, isn't just a great Mario game. It's arguably one of the greatest games ever. It's an unbridled hymn to joy that starts surprising you after a few minutes of play, and keeps surprising you every few minutes, again and again, up to the closing credits–and beyond. Every corner in "Odyssey" hides a secret–and there are many, many corners, spread across a surprising number of mini-open-world levels that feel like they came out of an LSD trip–but a very good one.

Games, even the best ones, are based on repetition. There are few activities in gaming that keep their shine after repeating them hundreds of times. Hence, the best thing I can say about "Odyssey" is this: I've collected hundreds of moons in this game–and yet, when I found a new one, I still smile. Every single time.

Of course, he plans to make her his bride, but in doing so, he's also kidnapped the princess of another land, the Ghost Hat people... ok... I know that sounds really weird, and it is, but it's still fantastic. In this game, Mario LITERALLY wears different hats. Sometimes these hats provide perks and there are many outfits that match each hat. Mario can use his hats to posses various creatures/enemies and become them. Yes, he very much takes over their possessed body and can use their powers. Often times these powers result in Mario locating his goals, in this game, that being Power Moons instead of stars. Which is different... somehow.

Moving on, Mario's controls have evolved over the years and all his staple moves have returned with a few more added to the fray. Mario can toss his hat and even spit and toss his hat so that it flies around him in a circular pattern, bopping every enemy around him. It's a really cool move that when done correctly, is very satisfying when you kill a big group of enemies with it. Furthermore, when you posses enemies, their controls work as you'd expect and they are very responsive. Possessing bad guys is so much fun, you'll want to try every creature you meet just to see what their powers are and what secret areas they can help you sniff out.

Speaking of which, the level design in this game is no different than past Mario adventures, in which I mean it's completely brilliant! The themes that are provided throughout the game have accompanying outfits/hats to go with them and each time you get to a new land you can get excited and say "I can't wait to see what cute little outfit Mario's going to buy in this land!" My favorites are Clown Mario and MexiMario. They are so adorable.

Ultimately, what's the bang for your buck? TREMENDOUS, if you dig in! There's a lot to see and do in this adventure if you give it time and seek out every nook and cranny. It's easy to get hooked on looking for all the power moons and since Mario is such a joy to control, the game is super addictive. Furthermore, you can purchase Amiibo characters from the store and provide Mario even MORE outfits! If you own a Nintendo Switch and have ever been a fan of Mario, GET THIS GAME! I have been with Mario since he began his adventures through the plumbing tubes and I'm so happy to see where he's at now. Mario is a great mascot and will continue to enchant people of all ages for years to come. You'd have to have a heart of stone to not look at Mario in his cute little outfits and gush like crazy. IF YOU PLAY THIS GAME, AND YOU HAVE A HEART, YOU WILL LOVE IT!

The nostalgic parts that tie into previous Mario games are also very soothing to the soul. It is a must play for lovers of Mario and just relaxed fun.
Here is where I have to dispel this almost perfect 10 for 10 score. First let be saying that I am a hard critic. I have never given a game a 10. For a game to be a 10, it has to be perfection level on all my categories. Mario gets a perfection for level design and performance. In those, it was no doubt a masterpiece. Game play was Exceptional (9), but where it lacked was the shoehorning motion controls and most objectives were purely centered around collect em style play. Nothing unique here, and the reason game play gets a 9 is because of the uniqueness of accomplishing those goals.

    It's detractors are the following
    - Story (same Peach has been kidnapped, go save her) Nothing new, but worth a 7 because at least they're consistent.
    - Graphics (Clean and smooth, but we're still working off the Swtich here, and will never be able to reach the potential Mario can with an underpowered console)
    - Collect-em gameplay. Game is just centered around get power moons from this world, go to the next, power moons, move on, power moons, move on. Very redundant.

Overall, the game feels like a true next evolution of Mario games, but does not stand out among all other games to warrant the near perfect review scores it receives from nostalgia driven critics.
    Final: 8.2/10

Mario odyssey is an amazing Game!!! I don’t like it AS Much as Breath Of The Wild But it’s Still AMAZING. Very much like 3D Mario's before it, (like sunshine's fludd and galaxy's gravity mechanics) Odyssey introduced Cappy. The mechanic is fun to play with and makes this 3D Mario stand out from the rest. Great game.

Mario controls and plays exactly how you’d want, and cappy(your hat) opens up so many new possibilities. Some kingdoms don’t exactly feel like they could exist in the same world as the others, but they are all a blast to explore with the stars of the show being cascade kingdom, metro kingdom, and bowser’s kingdom. As far as gripes go, the base game feels a couple hours too short and a bit too easy, but that’s only because there is such an amazing, fun filled postgame, packed with more(and harder) content. This is some of the most fun I’ve had playing any game. Not only is it my favorite 3D platformer, it’s my favorite mario game. Expand

Next switch game that I was able to finish after a long time. The game was made fun, Nintendo really delivered a masterpiece in the Mario universe, terrific. Unfortunately I didn't have a Wii or Wii U, so my last real Mario adventure was on the Gamecube.

    Story:

Saving Peach again, but that's just part of it, but I liked it a lot and was beautifully presented. Just the typical Mario charm.

    Graphics / presentation:

You really have to take off your hat here, the worlds are simply beautifully designed throughout and arouse such an unbelievable desire for discovery that I rarely experience in games. An unbelievable attention to detail does the rest, perfect. The music and individual sounds of the game make you kneel down and also awaken some nostalgic feelings. Many references are also available in the game, as far as you know them.

    Gameplay:

One word Cappy !!!! This new game mechanic is perfectly implemented and really puts you in a good mood. The various possibilities that are opened up are wonderfully integrated into the world and make collecting the moons even more interesting. The level of difficulty of the game is very pleasant and sometimes you have to see the mechanics of boss fights before you can lay them down.

    Scope:

Moons, outfits etc. in this game there are simply tons to do and after the story ends it continues, Mushroom Palace. You get a hell of a lot of worlds and can play the whole thing co-op, really strong.

    Conclusion:

Far from finished with Mario and still completely enthusiastic about Odyssey. I still have a lot to do in this game, just collecting the remaining moons will take a long time and everything else will be unlocked too. The game made a consistently positive impression on me and I can't think of anything to criticize. Therefore 10/10 stars.

Certainly one of Mario's best 3D games, but I think it could be better. The soundtrack is very good, the gameplay too, but I think the only defect is the clothing system. I think if it had power-ups like Mario Galaxy it would be more interesting, and the game becomes a little repetitive at the end. However, it diminishes very little in its legacy.

You may not be able to venture from world to world without having a huge smile on your face (especially Mario veterans). It is that joyful.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy have objectives for its collectibles (Stars or Shines) that encourage you to explore the worlds, but Mario Odyssey doesn't have them after the main moons.
There are way too many Power Moons in worlds that are not open at all, Mario Oddysey was sold with the idea of an open-world game, but some maps are reduced like a Mario 64 normal level and make you think that was just marketing for the game.
Talking about moons again, some of them are in rare places that were put there because yes. Collect the rest of the moons doesn't feel fun at all, it becomes tedious after a while, and having a lot of moons around the map breaks the point of collecting the main ones.

I hate to say this, but comparing Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy, Oddysey was my least favorite. The experience was satisfactory but less fun than previous Mario titles.

This is for me one of the weaker 3D Mario games when compared to the challenge and level design presented by Mario galaxy or even Mario 64, which this game claims to be a successor to, yet for the most part fails to understand adding value to tasks in order to get a moon, making them feel more Korok seed than power star. I was also baffled by how you’re forced to visit each kingdom in a mostly linear order despite the game claiming to be more open-ended, while also lacking any real hub world like peaches castle from 64. Instead the actual areas you visit feel like hub worlds where you search for secrets, moons and challenge rooms rather than feeling like actual platform challenges in of themselves. While I appreciate the more open feel of the levels they just feel far too easy with no real consequence for death other than losing coins which are easily replaced. The mechanics like capturing are interesting but never feel fully taken advantage of to create the ingenious level design last seen in the Mario galaxy series. And don’t get me started on the amount of lazily copy and pasted content throughout the game. There were far too many instances where I had to ground pound a spot to get a moon or buy one from the store which count as actual missions by the way. While you can always skip these ones if you want, I ended up finding that very few of the moons actually felt rewarding to get, making a lot of the game feel like unnecessary filler.

However, I also realise this game does better in some areas than any Mario game ever. Mario has never felt so good to control and often makes me want to pick up and play the game just because of how satisfying his move set is to pull off. Therefore, this is the best looking and running game in the series with the best controls, move set and camera, though I don’t like how the wall jump has been nerfed and made almost useless. I absolutely would like to see Mario maintain this broad move set for his next 3D outing, be it with a better wall jump. I just wish the game took advantage of his move set more in the level design as many areas feel like walking simulators rather than challenges that actually utilised this move set in clever and interesting ways. Overall an amazing sandbox with extremely tight controls but a disappointing platformer that lacks challenge with many ideas not quite reaching their full potential, making Super Mario Odyssey feel more like a tutorial for breath of the wild. I enjoyed the game a lot and would recommend to any switch owner looking for a relaxing sandbox game, even if it can’t deliver on my desire for a grander platforming challenge. While I don’t think this game is the sequel to 64 or as groundbreaking as many suggest it is, I still believe it’s worth picking up and playing.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]

Perhaps no past Mario game has ever elicited so many smiles as this, and even if every other winning aspect of its design were set aside, that reality alone would make it a masterpiece. [Issue #31 – January/February 2018, p. 39E]
