Super Mario Odyssey is an incredible video game that is sure to delight players of all ages. From the moment you begin playing, you will be swept away by the game's vibrant and colorful graphics, whimsical characters, and captivating storyline. This game is a true masterpiece, and it is easy to see why it has received such high critical acclaim.

One of the standout features of Super Mario Odyssey is the game's open world design. Unlike many other platformers, Super Mario Odyssey offers players a massive world to explore, filled with secrets and surprises around every corner. The game's environments are beautifully designed, and the levels are crafted with care, ensuring that every area feels unique and exciting.

Another major highlight of Super Mario Odyssey is the game's inventive and diverse gameplay mechanics. Mario has a variety of new abilities at his disposal, such as the ability to throw his hat and capture enemies, which adds a whole new level of strategy and complexity to the gameplay. The game also features a wide variety of challenges, from classic platforming sections to puzzle-solving sequences that require players to think creatively and use all of Mario's abilities.

In addition to its fantastic gameplay, Super Mario Odyssey also features an unforgettable soundtrack. From the game's upbeat main theme to its more somber, reflective moments, the music perfectly captures the mood of each level and adds an extra layer of immersion to the overall experience.

Overall, Super Mario Odyssey is a fantastic video game that should not be missed. It is a true testament to the creativity and innovation of the Mario franchise, and it is a shining example of how great game design can elevate a simple platformer into a work of art. Whether you are a longtime Mario fan or a newcomer to the series, Super Mario Odyssey is an absolute must-play game that will keep you entertained for hours on end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wasn't sure how a 3D mario game could get any better. The bar was already set so high but every new kingdom I explored just made the game even better. The core story is paced very tightly while still leaving plenty of room for side exploration and new discoveries to be made. Mechanics are finely tuned and superior to all other 3D Mario games I've played and the worlds to explore are simply unmatched.

Just when I thought of something they could do to improve the game, I discover something so much better than what I thought of and I'm having fun collecting hidden moons long after I've completed the core game. What really is the icing on the cake however is the overall celebration he game delivers for Mario as a franchise. Returning to N64-inspired Peach's castle and completing quests really completes the experience makes this game the ultimate Mario celebration game in my book.

If you're a long-standing Nintendo/Mario fan, you'll eat this up. If not, you'll probably enjoy the pure fun the game brings to the table anyway.

It felt boring, and bland. How could something so epic be something so boring and bland? After many years after trying to replay the game, I tried out something different. As after my first time beating Odyssey, I attempted to find as many stars as possible, making all the fun and interest in the world go to waste. I learned that in order to enjoy Odyssey again, I should explore at my own pace. I started to move on to different worlds once I wondered around. And you know what, it worked. I never had as much fun in Odyssey, until I started to learn to enjoy the game. And once I finished it, it really did make me glad I finished it. Odyssey is such a unique game. The amount of style is unmatched. While Odyssey is not my favorite Mario game, it sure is one of the best. You just need to learn to enjoy the game. Only three things I can complain about are simply the game being easy, that there should be more to do after the game ends, and that the story does not grab me as other games such as Super Mario Galaxy did. Mario Odyssey is just another example of how unique the 3d Mario games are. The only thing to note is that in order to enjoy the game, you need to enjoy the game! Not overwhelmingly focused on getting the moons and beating the game as fast as possible. Playing Odyssey reminded me that you need to see games like you were a kid again, not focused on all of the challenges, but by letting your curiosity go on. Expand

Controlling Mario never felt this good. It takes skill and training to master all of his moves and making use of them to explore hidden areas in the game is a lot of fun.

The Worlds are finally a little bit more imaginative again conceptwise instead of falling back into stereotypes, although there is still a little room for improvement (even weirder concepts for worlds would be amazing). Also the amount of worlds to explore with 10 kingdoms in total (not counting boss-platforms, tutorial worlds, etc) is fairly short, especially compared to other games in the series.

The music and graphics of the game are straight up amazing though. Very few Switch Games look and sound this good. Not much room for improvement here!

What I didn't like however was that the main-collectable in this game, "Power Moons", are a little too abundant to be exciting to collect. You receive Power-Moons for anything: Ground-Pounding on a shiny spot, planting a fruit, sitting on a bench... You can easily bypass huge chunks of levels including bosses(!) by just farming Power-Moons and then moving on to the next world. (Some players even reported accidentally skipping bosses due to this issue). The Game's Power-Moon-Counter doesn't even let you collect all the Power-Moons, since it will stop working once you hit 999 Moons. It would be nice to see the number of main-collectables be reduced and have them be a little bit more meaningful again in the next game.

The game gives moons way too easily, hindering their value and the overall enjoyment, and some kingdoms are way too basic, still great gameplay, music, and a lot of creativity. A good game, just not my favorite

It's been very long since I played a Super Mario game before, so playing Super Mario Odyssey felt quite refreshing.
However, Super Mario Odyssey pays homage mainly to the older sandbox Mario games, which I haven't played before, and that made my experience with Odyssey interesting but also slighty... complicated.
Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.

However, Super Mario Odyssey pays homage mainly to the older sandbox Mario games, which I haven't played before, and that made my experience with Odyssey interesting but also slighty... complicated.
Now, the story, just like in every other Super Mario game, is not important.
What's important in a Super Mario game, is the gameplay, and the gameplay in Super Mario Odyssey is the best in any Mario game I've played, and also arguably in any platformer game I've ever played; it's quite crazy, thanks to the excessive amount of different mechanics that sync in well with each other and Mario's moveset.
Visually, it's one of the better looking platformer games I've seen in the past few years, and the music is surprisingly good as well.
Additionally, the level design is detailed and creative, and the areas are fun to explore, albeit smaller than I expected.
Unfortunately though, the story is pretty short and the post-game content is very underwhelming and lackluster.
Also, the bosses are way too easy and repetitive.
My biggest gripe with the game, however, is an unpopular opinion. I know a lot of people won't agree with me on that, and that's fine but... I really don't like the progression system in this game; collecting Power Moons to progress through the story is tedious and it brought down the entire experience at times.
I can somewhat understand why most people like that though.

    Pros:
    + Exciting gameplay
    + Amazing mechanics
    + Beautiful visuals
    + Great level design

    Cons:
    - Short playtime
    - Boring post-game content
    - Bad boss fights
    - Progression system

    Content: ?/10
    Music: 7/10
    Art Style: 9/10

    Final Rating: 8/10
    - Great -
Super Mario Odyssey is a very well-crafted game and it's arguably one of the better platformer games I've played in a while, but it has some serious annoyances as well.
All in all, it's a very good game but it's also surprisingly unremarkable and a little bit... disappointing.

    Do I recommend it?:
It's pretty fun to play for the most part, so yes.

This game is amazing. Every location feels fresh and exciting to explore, The story while not being Shakespeare doesn't push it's boundaries and is just what's needed to advance the story. This is the only game I've ever wanted to 100% just because the mechanics of Cappy and the movement controls were so fluid. The only downside to this game is that there's no DLC or good multiplayer.

The capture mechanic was so interesting and innovative which made it so everytime I played a level I would approach it in a different way. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Basically, imagine every mechanic from previous 3D super mario games all in one game. This is what you get. Being able to throw a cap around is incredible. Honestly, some of the worlds are probably the same size or a little larger than of the worlds from Super Mario 64. If not, then the space of each part of the world is equivalent to 64 and Sunshine and what not but that's probably just a spec issue with the switch that they had to deal with somehow. The worlds are still decently large for exploration. Despite all this, the game has a sense of freedom cause Mario isn't forced to return to a specific spot after grabbing one collectible but rather he just needs to get a "multi-moon" and is then teleported back to the start of the world but this is usually after you fight a boss. The game just feels like a gigantic playground that you wonder in. There's little that is required of you, you just have to follow the path, get past obstacles, and fight a boss. The game has the difficulty of Mario Galaxy, so you won't need Assist Mode unless you're too lost in the game, don't wanna lose 10 coins for every death, or you just miss the large amount of health Mario had. Anyway, there are tons of outfits to choose from in the game, but each require a certain amount of coins. This is the best of Mario and I love it. Not much has changed except Bowser's creative wedding plan but now that Mario's Moveset is expanded, it makes for a nice open-world. No dashing, but there's rolling and long-jumping (and even the famous air dive from Mario 64 DS). There also no punch or kick but at least Mario can beat his enemies thoroughly without a traditional fighting technique. Mario has been moderately under-powered but don't worry because cappy expands his moveset even farther. Allowing Mario to do many tricks and even out-numbering the tricks he can do in previous games. Now you can make up for that extra distance his Long Jump can't cover by just doing an air dive onto Cappy so he can bounce you up for extra air-time. There's so many collectibles to get and so many ways to get them. It's a legendary Mario sandbox and it's peak exploration. Expand

Cappy makes the game even better, as not only does he allow you to capture certain enemies, replacing power ups in this game, but he also makes your gameplay even more skilled, due to being able to jump on your cap. With this gameplay options, at some points you might just find yourself messing around with the controls, jumping and swinging from area to area like I do.

The game runs at a smooth 60 FPS, and the visuals are stunning. The landscapes in this game are incredibly detailed and interesting.

The soundtrack is fantastic, with awesome songs with a variety of different arrangements that combine to create songs that you're sure to come back to.

The story is pretty basic, but that's not a necessarily a bad thing due to being just a Mario game. There isn't anything wrong with the story either, it's just a lighthearted and fun story that ends with a pretty great ending.

What's great about this game is that it encourages the player to play how they want to play. You might go through some of the intended route on your first playthrough, but in future playthroughs you'll find yourself going through most of the game your way, which is really fun. Not to mention how replayable this game is. You will find countless of things to do both during and after you complete the main story, including many interesting side quests and several fun minigames.

Overall, this is an absolute masterpiece from start to finish. If you're planning on getting Switch or already have one, this is the game to get.

The sand kingdom, while still good, had a lot of empty space in it and the Cloud kingdom is so short, bland and awful. There are a ridiculous amount of moons to find and while that is not a big deal because you don't need them all to finish the story, it can make going for 100% pretty annoying and tedious. The amount of costumes you can get for Mario is cool (Finally, coins are actually useful for once in a mainline Mario game!!!)and the amount of Easter eggs in this game is great as well. This entry bring some uniqueness by redefining what Mario's power-up can be. It also introduces very advanced roster of moves that you can perform but most of which are optional, and only of interest to hardcore Mario players that want to master the game. There also seems to be just right level of precision required for its platforming heavy moments, which could be taken for granted by most of the player, but some 3d games proven it can be done really well or really badly, and you only pay attention to the latter.

Only critique to the game would be that some of most difficult parts of the game, are challenging because the span for very long, and require you to do some very old sequences all over again to be beaten which gets quite tedious, and leads to frustration requiring taking breaks from the game in order not to break the game-pad.

Super Mario Odyssey is by far my favourite game of all time, the game goes back to the days of Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine and manages to perfect those formulas and ideas (such as the idea of losing your main companion and being put to the test in smaller challenges from Sunshine). The biggest original idea introduced here is Cappy a sentient hat that you can use to become various things throughout the game.

As well the amazing gimmick in becoming things, Cappy adds depth to the platforming and makes this the best controlling Mario we have ever had the privilege to play as. There are a ton of moves at your disposal that you lead into each other such as throwing Cappy midair and then diving into him to get further, and the motion controls don't feel forced they are integrated well into the game so that they fit into Mario's move set well. This game truly feels fun to just mess around in.

The level design is fantastic but there are two kingdoms Ruined and Cloud kingdom that basically serve as a place to have a boss fight, which I feel is a tad underwhelming given the potential the themes these levels have, a medieval kingdom inspired Mario level is an idea that we have never seen before and I would love to see that idea expanded on further.

But the rest of the kingdoms are massive open almost play ground like levels where every corner you turn has something new to discover. Levels such as the Sea Side Kingdom and the Sand Kingdom Are massive open spaces that let you go crazy and explore. But levels such as the Snow Kingdom and the Wooded Kingdom are multiple levels in one that you discover by exploring. The game actively encourages exploration, but not in a Metroidvania kind of way as it gives you hints in the map and Cappy's speech.

The sound track is a mixed bag as some tracks can be somewhat forgettable, the ones that do land correctly will stay in your head for the next week. Songs such as Jump Up Superstar (The main theme) the Shivirea town theme and Steam Gardens are all great examples of video game music composing done right.

A quick mention to the decorations and clothing you can get as it finally gives coins more of a purpose and the new purple coins make you explore the entire kingdom to its fullest.

I hope this helped someone pick up this game and I know im a tad late writing this at the end of 2022 but this game is to good not to review.

While it was difficult to imagine how Nintendo could top previous 3D Mario adventures, Super Mario Odyssey is nigh-on perfect in almost every way. With the help of Cappy, Mario has never been as fun to control, reaching new heights and, in the hands of a skilled player, accomplishing impossible skips. You need only pick up a controller to see why this is the best modern Mario game ever.

The best entry to the best platforming series is so ridiculously huge it’s like a theme park made of theme parks. It’s a wonderful tribute to Super Mario 64, but it’s not a lazy homage. Super Mario Odyssey draws inspiration from the superb classic to top it and everything that came after it. [13/2017, p.38]
