This game is an idiot test. Pay $70, unplayable if your internet goes down and the primary game design is to entice you to spend even more than your $70 investment. Don't support this type of development

It’s got like 30% of the content I’d expect for the price I paid for the game. Everything else I like about the game. Graphics are great the driving feels great. So unless they add a huge single player content update its a very big don’t buy from me. It’ll be the last GT game I’ll ever buy.

Edit after patch 1.13. I gave this a 1 out of 10 I hoped to change that after the latest patch. But adding 3 cars and a new layout for a track just don’t even come close to what I expected. I pre ordered thinking there was a career progression and the cafe was just some extra content. Until they add a career which I can’t see how they could now. It’s a big fat zero out of ten for me and a major do not buy.

This is Gran Turismo. The gameplay, control, depth, roster, most of the things we expect from the GT series. The game would have a much higher score, had it not been for some horrendous decisions made by Polyphony.

I will start with the biggest issue, and the most common complaint. This game is designed with microtransactions in mind. They did not add these microtransactions as an after thought, or as a way to make it easier to obtain other vehicles, they designed the entire economy around them. The reward payout is a bit lack luster. The fact that they don't let you buy the cars directly, but only sell credits (and the cost is insane if you want the higher priced cars) really shows their true intention. But the biggest drawback, is selling your unused cars. This was one of they most common ways to earn credits in most other GT games. However, you cannot earn credits by selling in this iteration. Why did they remove this? Simple, to push users towards buying those credit packs.
Side note: Polyphony even took the servers offline and cut the rewards drastically shortly after launch. They got flamed hard for that. They have since given most players 1m credits, but that doesn't go far when getting higher end cars.

Soundtrack. I have always enjoyed the soundtracks from previous iterations of GT. GT7 however, didn't even have the soundtrack as an after-thought. Yes, we can play apps like Spotify in the background, however I would have enjoyed it much more if they were to have at least put some good songs to listen to in the game. Using a music app in the background really doesn't feel the same to me.

The visuals are great, for the most part. Again, it seems like Polyphony decided to half-ass some of the special effects. Mainly, the rain. Playing in 3rd person perspective, i wouldn't really be able to tell it was raining had it not been for the wet tracks and sound effects. It doesn't look like it is raining at all. The raindrop effects on the windshield were also half-assed. They do realistically move as you drive, and the wiper effects are dismal. Driving through puddles, the water splashes are absolutely pathetic. I have seen better splash effects on the PS2. Polyphony really did not put any effort into the water effects visually.

How to fix this and make this the absolute driving simulator we all know it should be?
    1. Fix the economy. Let us sell these vehicles to earn more credits. The microtransactions should not feel forced. I personally would have no problem buying them here and there, to show support, however you built the in-game economy around these transactions.

2.Work on the weather effects. Polyphony has never really been one to cut any corners, however you have cut several corners here, and games from previous generations really put GT7, even on PS5, to shame in the rain department.

3.Some licensed music would be great. This is the least critical area in my eyes (and ears), however is something that should be given some attention.

GT7 was marketed as "The return to our roots" release. The true driving simulator. Well, part of driving is buying the cars, customizing cars, driving cars, and selling cars. You have taken that last part of a driving simulator away from is in order to pursue greedy intentions (microtransactions). These three areas I think would really make Gran Turismo 7 the king once again. At least fixing the economy and rain effects.

Roulette Tickets are a joke, pay out is still low, and now it’s gold or Bronze I can remember every other GT game grading on a scale 8/10 golds and the other 2 being silver would still give you the gold prize. You know I bought my PS5 strictly for this game but now that this game is Trash I’m selling my PS5 and I’m going PC and switching to the plethora of different racing games there.

Then the updates came, and driving was a bit better until the 1.13 patch came, which ruined it from any aspect of driving. I played many simulators and no one is as bad as this one. It is so frustrating to know that they could make this game work well, but they simply didn't. It is no use for a game like this to look so beautiful if driving is so awful. I have never met a game in which a RWD car would act like a FWD (GR3 cars after update 1.13).
Also, one bad thing is that PD made this game work really good for controller users, but they didn't adapt driving for wheel users.
I played this game from the release and I regret spending so much money on a game that was released way too soon when it had so many problems and many of them are still present today.
I really hope they will fix it, but I doubt it. I say this because PD seems to want to sell more than giving a good game, which might be hard to play, but please the real enthusiasts of real driving, not this arcade nonsense. It is far away from how good and stable was GT Sport. It is a shame that this game is so great in all aspects other than driving.

There's not enough events and the way the events is organized is like all over the places. Back then the events where organized in specific type of races. Like you go an event for FF challenge and see the races and tracks. Now you go to tracks and see events, which is badly designed. I thought the cafe was for mini challenges like coffee break in GT4 and not for the main gameplay. -Car prizes is rather meaningless. Back then you get excited to see what car you have unlocked cause some of them were not purchasable or hidden. Now car prizes is reduced and rewards are money instead of getting car prize. This design of this game, unfortunately, is collecting money and go buy a car. Which make you feel this game has no soul or fun like how it was. Back then, like the first 4 gran turismo games, the cars where customized by PD and made them available as prize cars. I wish they can make an event with initial D's car as a prize car instead of throwing it in dealership and make it available for purchase. -Even though musics are awesome, but they are reused. I wish they add more new cool musics and in race musics like how they used to do.
-This game is seriously need to be fixed to be great again. I think no one would see this review and care

For those who paid 80€ for this, this is unacceptable. In the future, when the game is discontinued and this issue is not resolved, you are basically left with nothing. The time and money you invested into playing this game will be competely wasted.

Even worse thing is that the game itself is not bad, in fact it's one of the best racers I've ever played. It's a real shame that developers are willing to kill their game, which they put countless of hours into making, just for some extra money when they force people to buy their next new game. These practices are killing gaming industry as a whole, that's why I gave this game such a low rating.

I paid for a 25th anniversary edition around 100$ and I can’t play because either, I get an update, or the server is down… frankly unacceptable.

And then there is the issue of the microtransactions. How come, now that you can buy in with real money (if you want and can afford it), the game gives you a lot less credits when you win a race or a championship.

Have they not already earned enough. I am very disappointed and I want my money back.

It’s Cyberpunk 2077 all over again! There are other companies that somehow are able to deliver a finished game like Horizon Forbidden West.

My first car is crap, but is grown in my heart because i sweat and blooded for winning races, grind for credits and keep the car maintenance. In my garage, i have EMOTIONAL BINDING to every car.

But nope: You win cars for every BS like in other racing games ( Forza ). You first time visit something? Here, a new car! Have done a license? You get another one. This is how real life is, isn't it? When cars is gifted for every BS, there is no emotion for the cars, just another "item" you even can't get rid of it.

This just make me sad as a Gran Turismo player from the first hour on. :-(

    =====

I tried to like it, but there's just so much wrong with this game. You need to be online to play single-player (so with the maintenance update debacle today, I couldn't play the game at all). Practically all of the single-player races are rolling start, with the lead car sometimes given a 45-second lead. The roulette mechanic is lame. Earning credits was already too slow, and with the 1.07 patch, is now about twice as slow as 1.06. Microtransactions in a game I just spent $90 CAD. Bugs with licence tests. Dumb AI. A generally unintuitive UI that requires too many button presses. A tuning shop that isn't organized by part type. The single-player "menu book" experience is too short. I guess I could go on, but why bother...

Warn you, in real world if you ride a car and don’t like it you can sell it and get other things you like. Not in GT7, you need to sit there and do hundreds races again to buy another car… Microtransaction is a joke. The cars are so expensive you better save the money and get another console, racing in another platform. That’s a better investment of time and money and I think I couldn’t even sell my GT7 disc, no one wants it nowadays…

You cant sell cars as they want you to pay with their micro transactions. So its pretty much pokemon for cars at this point. I have no interest in "collecting them all" and filling up my car-e-dex . The game plays like a mobile game and has the same microtransactions tactics you would see in a mobile game.

The game loops the professor I mean the guy in the cafe is find 3 cars by doing 3 rolling start 2 lap races (and they are just about all rolling start) and 1 multi day race tournament. back to the cafe for your next mission from the professor for the next 3 pokem...i mean cars. Love the game, just not the fact it works out about £160 in microtransactions to buy a the most expensive car, Sony didn't even include the microtransactions in the version for the media to review and added it afterwards.

Okay, I'm updating my review to reflect recent update, still not full fixed, needs more race options for top level cars and the roulette system is rigged and just wrong because it sounds like a gambling game.

Oringinal review March 2022, Score 0:
Gran Turismo 7 is a fantastic game, but what Sony and Polyphony Digital with monetisation and reducing race payouts is just greedy. It puts them almost equal with EA, Take Two and Ubisoft in being greedy publishers, that only care for money and not gamers.

We all know that reducing race payouts and increasing car costs is a way to make us spend real money on buying credits. Before the 1.07 patch, I was thinking that buying credits was not a bad option, if I didn’t have enough at the time, now that Sony and Polyphony Digital are trying to force us to buy credits by reducing payouts, I will never
    spend any money on credits.

Also, why do we need online connection to servers to play solo? This make no sense and just makes it impossible to play when the servers are down.

I’ve played Gran Turismo since it first came out in 1997, 25 years ago, for the first week of Gran Turismo 7, I was feeling very nostalgic, seeing the old track in there upgraded form. Now after patch 1.07 I’m feeling frustrated and disappointed, the reduced payouts make the game too much of a grid to earn enough to buy and upgrade the top cars.
We know Sony and Polyphony Digital did this because not enough people were spending money on buying credits, and we were playing the high payout races repeatedly to earn credits, but this is a key part of the game, we race because it is fun and to earn credits to buy more cars. We don’t play games to spend money on microtransactions.

Another problem with the game is the roulette mechanic, it is too much like gambling in its visual presentation, and it is rigged to give the lowest reward 95% of the time. I tested this buy saving up tickets and then opening them in one go, and I pretty much got the lowest reward every time.

This being said, 9 months too late and GT7 missed all the GOTY awards. It still has the worst soundtrack in the series (very budget), it still has RETARDED AI from year 1999 that will destroy your progress in difficult races by making you go off track and loose 10+ seconds. It still has that same, stupid 'coffee' career progress, it still has that MP like races in career (ex. there's no grouping by FF, FR, MR etc. as dominant but rather VERY restrictive manufacturer and PP races). 4/10 and RIP Gran Turismo

I've deleted my old review, but here's a warning:
Game career ends abruptly; it's short, lacks career maker races, endurance races and some cups in general. After that it'll force you to grind or use real money to level up (doing so by car collecting) which is even harder considering you can't sell them!

    Take it as a warning.

The gameplay is mediocre at best, races are forgettable, the AI is laughable. I played a handful of the single player before realising that this game isn't so much about being a driving simulator as much as a combo simulator requiring you to press a variety of controls at the exact right time to achieve the desired effect, not fun. Take that and throw in the odd near-impossible gold time to beat for "challenge" & microtransactions for when the "challenge" becomes too much and you already have the boring, generic and repetitive idea of what this game is trying to be. Customisation is minimal compared to other games and some more advanced features like being able to talk into your mic to ask for updates etc. doesn't exist either. It feels like you slap on the most expensive parts and your good to keep winning easily. Graphics are awfully misleading to the point they feel like a scam, any sort of realism you see in a cutscene, photo etc. is literally just a staged concept of your car driving over a photo of a real location. In an actual race the graphics are basic, washed out and looking more like something out of Fortnite than realistic. The story is a complete cash grab, built for what looks like a child audience. Most of the people involved in the story don't have voice lines, the way the game talks to you feels almost patronising, after a few hours I could take no more and did the next best thing possible, deleted it. I'm giving this a 2, that's for the fact it turns on and you can play it. Is it worth the price? No. Would I recommend it? No. Expand

I wanted to wait for Polyphony/Sony's response before I wrote this review. I am so bitterly disappointed and this is the first review I've ever written so that should speak volumes in itself.
The single player portion of this game requiring an online connection is simply wrong and is unacceptable. I cannot believe that it is literally impossible to start your game over and/or create a new save file. The official recommendation from Sony is to create a whole new Playstation ID every time I just want to start fresh. The save file is forever tied to the account, backed up to the cloud and made impossible to ever remove. Am I purchasing this game or just renting it? The update recently released made no mention whatsoever about changing the online requirements so you've officially lost a loyal fan of this series.

I will leave the original review for history though. I originally rated a 2 because of the glaring problems, and pushing of microtransactions.

The downtime doesn't help matters, which at the current time of writing is over 24 hours though there may be extenuating circumstances for this, there has been almost no communication on why everything is dead now, it has bought up a glaring issue, if Polyphony Digital has server issues this extensive, it probably means all their servers are in one place.

Secondarily, and more importantly, they have created a car collecting game, but it is very difficult to get actual credits in the game to buy the cars. They nerfed the one semi decent way to get some. Don't worry, you can just buy them on the PS store... assuming you want to spend a couple of grand to collect all the cars

Even the roulette, which itself is just a lootbox, nearly always gives you the most pitiful reward on offer, of which often one of those is a time limited invitation to spend 1-5 million credits, which won't be helped by the roulette giving you 5000/10000 credits about 90% of the time. Used cars in the game have prices through the stratosphere. You cannot sell cars you own, and you do occasionally get duplicates also, so you cannot even recycle credits that way.

The menu books also run out very early, and you don't need any license over A, so it feels like the game is massively unfinished.

The mechanics and racing is actually really fun though, even though the AI are as dumb as a bag of hammers on a special bus, but as it stands I can't actually play the single player because apparently since after GT Sport they decided it would make sense to completely make the single player unavailable offline.

It's a really fun game, when it works, and you're not actually invested in collecting the cars, but they are losing so many points for this £70 game and nickle and diming the players for credits so we want to spend on microtransactions.

Maybe if gamers had a micro transaction system of their own Polyphony would get better reviews…

I mean after all we are so dedicated to them really VALUING good reviews, just like we are supposed to value good cars. We don’t want to short change them.

What plays for the goose, plays for the gander, right?

Used to be hands-down the best game to buy even at a high price. I own several of the series.

I will never purchase GT7 because of the LAME AF performance points they started in 6. so you can't go back and race easy races with awesome cars for **** and giggles. Also microtransactions for a 70 dollar game? Greed is eternal but now you lose so many customers. Not being able to sell

After patch 1.10 polyphony digital fix game economic in better way. I changed my review from 0 to 8. Its decent game, still best online racing and matchmaking from all racing games. Amazing visuals, and physics. But there are lack of offline event and content, hope developers add more races and events

This is basically GT Sport + a"coffee break" spot. Nothing new there. Where are some city tracks? Dubai? NY? London?

I want to start off saying that the game is beautiful and on the PS5 it has great features like the feedback on the controllers. However it is far from the Simulation GT experience I was hoping for. When I first saw the announcement I was hoping for a GT3/GT4 experience however that is not the case here. It is a great building block and keeps me hopeful for GT8 to make improvements but there is a lot left desired here. Once they make changes as promised it will be better but in its current state it is a basic racing game not worth full price in my opinion.

    Pros:
The GT World Map is nice and well setup
Love the return of GT Auto, Used Car Dealership, and Tuning Shop
    Good Mix of Cars
    Cafe is a nice feature
So much car history and information (my favorite feature of this game)

    Cons:
Always online even in single player, which is a bummer
Races are way too easy, Playing on hardest difficulty I have yet to find a challenging event other than License and Missions.
Have to down grade cars constantly in order to create minimal challenge
No Damage. Hit a wall at 200mph no problem spin around once and good to go
Roulette system needs fixed, over 100 tickets opened and almost all have been 5000 credits rewards
Micro Transactions are trash and a ripoff.

Screw this monetization system, I hope this decision came from upper management and Polyphony didn't lose it's way

Remember the good days when Gran Turismo offered hundreds and hundreds of cars right out of the box with many many tracks, well those days are dead and Sony did it. Can't even imagine how horrible Gran Turismo 8 will be.

Pretty average game, unfortunately. I unlocked a few average cars I wouldn't even drive in real life and was quite bored.
Very different from GT2 when you'd drive around in your favorite supercars.

I can't help but be severely disappointed in GT7. I agree with the outrage about the aggressive microtransactions, the required online connection, but my biggest gripe is the tracks and car selection. They had so many years to develop GT7, there was so much anticipation for it and yet, the actual content of the game was a complete let down. Yes, DLCs will be released but that hardly justifies anything and it's hardly something to be hopeful for if the DLCs just end up being more tracks and cars from GT6. GT Sport DLC's were mainly just common cars that should have been in the game from launch. There is hardly anything distinct from GT Sport's selection right now. GT2 and GT4 provided details and a vast choice of cars and tracks. The used car dealership in GT7 is a flop, like 15-30 cars in there at best. We let polyphony slide with GT Sport since they innovated and implemented the penalty system which was new to the franchise and a new direction. GT6 had standard cars which were cars that we're ported from GT4 but still rendered as PS2 graphics, which was a complete joke. GT7 was suppose to hit the nail on the head.

The execution and presentation is gorgeous. The details are so ultra real and beautiful, it is a true therapeutic experience you will not get in any other game. It's cannot be overlooked, it is truly a graphical marvel. The menus and design as good as the latest Apple product trailers. I will forever respect and admire the minds behind the creation of Gran turismo games, but consumer enthusiasts of the franchise are getting sick and know it's always something with them. And what the heck is that BS "music" mode? Forza Horizon 4-5 have an excellent selection. So good that Gran Turismo most likely can't ever match at this point. I am honestly looking forward to Forza Motorsports 8 as well. I presume they will actually use the time wisely and develop something nice.

    More online race possibility.
I understand the idea about work (play) hard to earn credits to buy better parts and cars, like in real life. Come on devs, show us what you imagined.

This is a game I have been waiting an entire console generation for, and to be brief - I am disappointed.

The single player is lackluster, its missing core features like GT league or Cups/Championships. There aren't enough ways to engage with the single player, it's all rolling start races which takes all the fun out of racing. The multiplayer is embarrassingly bad, which has me worried

The physics and customization are 10/10 though. This is where the game shines, the tracks & cars are pretty much perfectly modeled and the driving itself is quite punishing (in a good way). The game also does a great job on teaching you how to be a better driver.

Overall a massive letdown for a game that was advertised as being the ultimate gran turismo experience. Feels more like a glorified $30 game.

Starts off great, but with the recent changes to the credit system good luck with trying to have enough credits to buy the cars you really want. The micro transactions in this game are a joke… you’re paying around 70-100$ for a game and PD and Sony expect you to shell out even more for in-game credits to buy some ridiculously over priced cars… Another gripe is the always online single player mode. Why the hell would you design this game in a way that must always be connected to the internet? It’s a single player game guys, make me connect online if I’m doing anything related to multiplayer, but don’t make me have to connect online if I don’t want to. Overall, this is where I stand in my review and I will only be inclined to change this review if things change in a positive direction Expand

This game is amazing in VR. It is packed with content and is top quality. My only issue is that it can be a grind to make money. This one game alone could keep you occupied for years. Brilliant.

This is a disgusting move and we should not support it. They waited for the favourable reviews and then they tactically and cynically broke the game in a bid to grab cash from loyal fans. Vile behavior that should have regulation. We don't have the game we bought.

So much potential for this game. I had high hopes. A terrible launch, needing single player to be always online, horribly expensive microtransacrions or ridiculous grind to be be able to get some of the cars in game is just shockingly bad, has pushed me back towards playing Forza Horizon 5 until Forza Motorsport 8 is out.

EDIT: Increased my rating as most of my issues have been resolved and Polyphony is putting out updates regularly. I am now thoroughly enjoying this game.

If I could get my money back, I would. As everyone else has already stated, the cost of cars is ridiculous, credit awards difficult to earn, micro transactions are expensive, and even single player requires online connection.

Additionally, for more casual players some super licence and missions will be near impossible to pass, leaving large portions of the game locked.
Predatory and greedy pricing. Unless you’re are die hard fan, I’d strongly recommend avoiding unless Sony/Polyphony change things up.
GT Sport is still excellent and VERY inexpensive.

Gran Turismo 7 has a lot of good and plenty of great. The use of DualSense and the particularly well-tuned loading is exemplary, and there's a huge amount of work behind the game, with a lot of detail that's almost hard to believe at times. [Issue#318]

Gran Turismo 7 brings to the tracks every single thing fans always wanted: the GT Mode everyone loves, plenty of customization options, car loads, classic scenarios and one of the best DualSense and 3D Audio experiences the PS5 has to offer. This is the best Gran Turismo experience we have ever seen in a long time.

Gran Turismo 7 is a love letter to motorsport history and an impeccable technical showcase. The franchise's traditional formula gets good improvements, but it's still extremely true to its roots. One of the best racing series ever shines spectacularly on the PS5.
