The devs were so scared of failure, they copied the formulae of the original to the point that its essentially the same game with different bosses. I mean exactly. Same house in the snow, instead of taking down a deer with loki you have to do the same trek but just for another reason (spoiler free). Then you fight balder in the first, it's the same again with different boss (spoiler free). Then off you go on a linear adventure until it opens up into a semi open world. There is nothing different, the fighting gets boring, the difficulty even on hard is too easy. It's mediocre at best. If you prefer movie over game, you will enjoy. Me personally I prefer a game to a movie. Casual game with good cut scenes that's been overhyped to death. Expand

If you played the 2018 GOW, you really don’t need to play this one. It’s not a bad game, it’s just that there is little new. I wanted to get into it but just couldn’t as I already played - and loved - it 4 years ago.

It's another example of woke culture seeping into a place it doesn't belong and making an industry worse. Unfortunately a new coat of paint of boring talking and walking missions and the horrendously eye sore menu system and plethora of bugs make this sequel a real let down. It just doesn’t deliver. All the samey samey things are going on. No improvements at all. I’m deeply disappointed for a 4 years development situation. The game feels like they want me to feel like I am a three year old person. But I am not. I am **** 43 years old and playing a god of war game. A bit frustrated where this is going to. How does this game got so many good reviews?

The biggest issue that this game feels no different to the first game, they've added a few rather pointless elements to the combat and skills which ultimately just make things feel cluttered and confusing. Other than those minor changes it's the same very linear gameplay, where you're funneled down very specific paths with little to no room to explore your surroundings, along with the same old rather tedious puzzle elements and the very tired video game trope of smashing f*cking pots! Then there's the cross gen thing...the amount of very slow crawling under, over, through behind practically everything in your path gets old VERY quickly! it's quite clear after just 20 minutes that this game should have been PS5 only. Basically this game is a huge disappointment as far as i'm concerned...oh and atreus..is really f*cking irritating. Expand

To each his own but imo this "GOTY nominee" is very disappointing. Atreus can't shut up, the player is hand-holded through the entire game, the dialogues are pure cringe and theres zero innovation over the GOW(2018). It could have been a DLC. The hype around this boring, very linear game is not justified in any way.

Ese videojuego y Elden ring son los títulos mas sobrevalorados de lo que va del año que en lo personal son un 90 muy justo ni mas ni menos. This product is a hate crime. But even putting aside the malicious insertion of a black girl and promoting miscegination in a game about Norse mythology. It's like smearing feces on Michaelangelo's David. Nobody wants to play as Atreus. He's not a compelling character and the segments with him are way too long

My biggest problem is however the pacing, and the quality of the story.
It feels like a roller coaster, going from an excellent scene, to one boring and generic as can be.
The game starts out strong, then has a lot of tedious sequences that should be optional side quests but aren't. Then we get a masterfully done main story bit, then back to boring filler. Why can't the quality be the same across the whole game? There's extremely low effort animations when characters talk, but the scenes deserve mo-cap. Lots of lore things are set up, then never used again, or never explained. A lot of missed potential. So many things one would expect to see from Norse mythology, and they didn't bother putting most of them in.
I love the God of War series and I don't get why they don't put in more epic boss fights? Or more bosses in general. There's basically only 2-3 main bosses, all human-like, nothing big, nothing epic. The ending was horrible. The game feels incomplete, like they forgot that they only made 2 instead of 3 games let in the Norse mythology.
My favorite parts were Kratos, Brock, and Sindri. All scenes with them were good. The rest... meh.

And map design is so suck. When you play the side quest, you have to go different area any definitive reason, even side quest is continued. So players lose their immersed on their side story, Players lose their interest by riding sleigh more than 5~10 minutes . Washington Post said ragnarok's side quest is overwhelm witcher3? That's **** Because i cannot immersed ragnarok's side quest, because it's time waste quest designs.

Lastly let's talk about chest. Chest is hidden among maps even we play the main quest. The quest is very import or urgent situation, but you have to find chest after battle is over. Some people does not want to find these treasures, but this game is not open world game. If you Strengthen enough your cretos, you have to find chest or you cannot upgrade your weapon, rune, armors.
Sony want force gamers time as long as other open world game. Because sony must prove the PS5 game is cost efficient product, even sony increase game price over 70$.

Ragnarok is victim of sony's policy, and could be better game than this. We can meet ragnarok with full of creative rare puzzles, compulsive main quest from start until end of game. We could enjoy 15~20 hours with immersed in this game and stroy.
But Ragnarok is stil good game, but i am worry about next god of war is not improved at all, except Graphic.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to love this game. The 2018 GOW was one of my favorite games and Ragnarok more or less building on the same gameplay experience worked really well for me
But, the original game had a very simple story that played out beautifully, whereas the sequel fell totally flat. I didn't just not enjoy the story, I hated it. It was nonsensical, contrived, and the ending was deeply unsatisfying. An event - Ragnarok - which is more or less Armageddon, winds up being a very short, very uneventful, boring part of the game. There was more involvement gathering fruit in one of Atreus's pointless side quests.
The whole "be better" thematic overall I just found aggravating. I am more likely to do another playthrough of the original game than Ragnarok again.

This must be trilogy, you ruined it
    The world is empty again!
They compare side quests with The Witcher 3 but GOW is way behind
Odin didn't give a sh*t about Ragnarok but the mask
The Ragnarok was not about world ends but only Asgard! I think lazy devs made this decision, also Ragnarok itself was not big deal, you name a game Ragnarok and it's 10% about Ragnarok itself
Thor said I see you again to Kratos at the beginning but never catch Kratos up till last hours of game, Odin disguised as Tyre but for what reason? Did he use the information he gathered? No, he knew Kratos is seeking the spear for killing Himdal but didn't warn Himdal or at least didn't take horn from him .
Fenrir was ghost and had do nothing In storyline. Thor the god of thunder has been killed by one-hit spear and vanished :/
Also Combat algorithm of Odin, Thor and even Himdal was poor and bad and not breathe taking at all.
    The narrative was bad
Combat system didn't add anything but they removed bare hand and some Blade combos.
Asgard is little village, I expected huge palaces and City, Again thanks for lazy devs
What have you been doing in these 5 years? I was huge fan of GOW but I hope Elden or any other games win the goty award, also metacritic score is worthless, 94? It should be something around 80`85 thanks to Gameplay, graphic and Sindri/Brok, that's it

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphics and combat are fantastic but its like the developers went out of there way in both games to make Atreus a completly unlikabe character. I recenty replayed Gow 2018 and its fresh why I hated him in that game, his constant smart ass comments and attitude. Its no different here, every section you play as him is a slog and you cant wait for it to be over.

The story is poorly written and the whole "LOKIE" character, the so called champion never does anything but find some mask pieces, that in the end goes no where. Both games would have been better with out him.

Every fight has some room you have to enter and some annoying dialog and if you die on harder difficultys over and over, you have to go through crack again and hear the same dialog over and over. Sections in this game are so annoying it henders replays.

This game is basically The last of us 2, forcing you to play characters and do gameplay that I dont see how anyone thought it would be fun, its padding at best.

The must be better and we dont war is played to death. Tyr is a pointless character, everything hyped from the first game never is fleshed out, there is no deeper meaning to anything in the end kratos does everything, boi finds a mask. This story is terrible and you will really notice how bad everything is on your 2nd play through on higher difficultys, thats when I started to despise the game.

Also this game shares the same problems the last one did, like repetition of enemies (a bunch been the same enemies as the last game), extremely boring puzzles (again, i bunch of them just a copy and paste from the last game), and repetition in general, all whe have to do in this game is basically running, killing some creatures, solving puzzles and collecting some chest, that's it. Side quests are average, some characters are charismatic and fun, but many of them are shallow and uninteresting, and i feel the world is kinda dead, i mean, there are animals living there but they don't have a routine like in Red Dead Redemption, if you stand in front of them for 1 hour they'll do the same thing for 1 hour. Animations, direction, soundtrack and the art are top notch, but they were already in the past game and just remained the same, so. Freyr is a lowly guerrilla leader that uses **** explosives (!?) to fight undying asgardian einherjars.
Odin is nothing more than a common american gangster.
Thor is a crying drunk depressed because (?) *reasons*
And the final battle, omg, motivated by vengeance - as Kratos himself states multiple times in the 5 minutes before going to to war - for the recently murdered main character. After 30 hs of gameplay, the final battle motivation is the death of our buddy that just died for no reason at all. Almost everything that happened in the 30 previous hours is simply a inconsequential filler.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointing. You don't even feel like you are fighting with gods anymore. Where in the Norse Myth Odin was like a murican politician with short beard? They made a joke out of Thor too. We before fought Poseidon, Hades, Ares and Zeus and they all felt like a GOD. Here in the last boss fight, it's like you are fighting with mini boss from a random anime game. The writing, dialogues and the characrers are mediocre and it has paced awfully.

You only get one new weapon the entire game which is very disappointing. The game is joky and it has lost its serious tone. 50% of the game is with Atreus and it's very meh. Is this even God of War? They have ruined the franchise. Also when we talk about Dragons, Nidhogg is the first thing that comes to mind. This dragon is so powerful that Kratos needs to activate his whole power to be able to killing it. The design and the fight itself is very weak and washed.

The old greek God of War trilogy is remained the best and i don't need to see another God of War anymore after this disappointing Ragnarok.

The decline comes from how much they throw at you from a narrative point-of-view. God of War (2018) is a straightforward, impactful story of a boy and his father going on a journey to spread the mother's ashes. Along this journey, bits and pieces of the world and its characters slowly start to get peeled back.

God of War: Ragnarok feels like it should have been a fourth installment for how much they ask of you to know everything about this world. There are so many moving parts to be aware of for the story to really makes that impact 2018 did and it never does. It doesn't help that the characters outside of Kratos, Atreus and maybe Freya are pretty unengaging.

It's not even that Ragnarok is a "bad" game, honestly it's exceptional as hell with an obvious huge budget attatched to it to help sell that this is a AAA game with new mechanics, worlds, engine improvements, etc. But that doesn't help the feeling that God of War: Ragnarok tries to do too much with too little setup.

Ragnarok is a wholly disappointing sequel to the triumph that was God of War 2018, a game that was, to me, greater than the sum of its parts. Ragnarok is EXACTLY the sum of its parts, lacking the charm and writing polish that set the previous entry apart. The gameplay has not been expanded in any meaningful way and, in some regards, has regressed back to more "video-gamey" systems. ARagnarok is a wholly disappointing sequel to the triumph that was God of War 2018, a game that was, to me, greater than the sum of its parts. Ragnarok is EXACTLY the sum of its parts, lacking the charm and writing polish that set the previous entry apart. The gameplay has not been expanded in any meaningful way and, in some regards, has regressed back to more "video-gamey" systems. A visual feast, this game is; a meaningful, complete experience it is not. It suffers under the weight of its uninteresting narrative, resulting in a clunky, slow, meandering game with a dull payoff.

The phrase "it feels like a Marvel movie" has been thrown around by some detractors, and perhaps rightfully so; this game is so Disney-fied that it barely feels like a God of War game, even less one made by the same studio as 2018's entry. Cory Barlog said something along the lines of 'I don't want my team nor myself to be working on another GoW game for the next 15 years,' and I don't think that's an unreasonable idea. The problem is that so much stuff got scrapped in order to keep this game within the ideal AAA length, and it shows. Plot points, characters, and artifacts lead to nowhere. There's always someone or something new to talk to or find, but rarely are the reasons why expanded upon.

At the end of all this is a game full of ideas that are never resolved. The mid-game feels like filler, its connection to the main plot unclear and its consequences even less clear. Most of the game is spent cleaning up other people's messes as Kratos randomly decides to become the World's Best Dad and neighbor to all. This makes him a reactive protagonist and makes the game boring in turn, as most of your time is now spent waiting for something bad to happen so Kratos can step in and fix it.

Ragnarok showed its hand too early and, oh boy, was it a weak one. The gimmick fight against Thor failed to recapture the magic that was the Baldur fight from 2018. Cut back to the cabin and here's Odin, the All-Father, the king of Asgard, talking like he's in an episode of Seinfeld. His goal is to stop Ragnarok, something he's desperately trying to figure out (supposedly), yet every appearance shows him frolicking around as if there's nothing wrong. This seems to be a common theme, actually, as every character seems to feel no sense of urgency. There wouldn't even be a game here if Kratos wasn't so prideful in the first hour; him and Odin have the same goal and, by the end of the game, Kratos has evolved into someone who actively wants peace, so... why even deny Odin's truce in the first place? The story stumbles through the realms, eventually limping to a dull, unsatisfying conclusion.

The discrepancies throughout this game's story make my head hurt, but these aren't just limited to the narrative. The gameplay and level design have taken massive hits, especially the latter; the sprawling landscapes dotted with colossal set pieces found in the first game have been scrapped in favor of narrow hallways and one-way streets littered with "puzzles." These "puzzles" are never difficult but are so great in number that they quickly became tedious. I never thought I would be complaining about roadblocks in video games but man, I miss the dynamic puzzles from the first game. At least they were a little more complex.

The skill trees are unnecessary for two reasons: one is that you get so much XP so quickly that you never need to worry about unlocking skills; the second is that these skills are so ineffective that you're better off without them. The skills in the first game had real responses in-game, like the stance-changing R1 attack doing more posture damage, rewarding the risk you had to take just to activate it. In this game, enemies can walk off a stagger as long as there's another animation in their attack cycle. The parry windows are never consistent and, even if you do pull off a perfect parry, there's no guarantee that the riposte will hit- and that's EVEN IF the enemy gets staggered at all. There's no dueling or back-and-forth combat, just passive waiting until you can punish a lucky stagger or shield bash.

God of War: Ragnarok feels like a visual novel. My button inputs mean very little because the story is more important. But... the story is boring. I'm not invested in something where all the cool stuff happens in cutscenes where control has been taken away from me. The major boss battles ARE cutscenes; they take no skill to beat, instead you just whittle away their health bar until you get to the next cutscene where Kratos does something cooler than you could ever hope to achieve in real combat.

This game was so badly mishandled that I'm not even excited for the next game by SSM. I don't think Ragnarok is a bad game, but it's a bad God of War game. Unfortunately, we may never know just how good this game could have been. In appealing to the lowest common denominator, this game became bland and soulless. What a shame.

One of the most frustrating bosses is the berserker duo in the dwarf realm, and after I finished that, I went into alfheim to find a berserker trio! After I got fed up with that, I left to do other side content and right beside the berserker trio was an asgardian camp with TWO MORE identical enemies for bosses. The main story even has duo Valkaries, duo fire elementals, etc. Just many of the same enemies as a fake and lazy way to make the game harder. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Probably worst game in the franchise
    So many problems
    So many mistakes
I'll start from the smallest to the biggest ×The weapons are weightless unlike the previous game that had hit stop "inverse kinematics" for some reason they got rid of that.
×Brutality is the soul is the DNA of God of War and they got rid of that too.the satisfaction of killing a boss is just isn't there Heimdall death is so empty it doesn't have any seasoning Thor's death is even worse and Odin's death is the worst Loki's hand on Odin shoulder! Is just unbelievable but that roots in other problems much more serious ones.
×Another problem with the game is that it builds so much anticipation for a heroic sad farewell to Kratos and it just chooses a different lame route!! The most on edge edgy game franchise in the whole industry don't deserve that childish ending and this childish philosophy present in the game.
Kratos also, I mean he is also the most edgy on edge character in the whole entertainment industry! He doesn't deserve the ending that writers gave him.
×so many characters and activities were point less, Loki gameplay should have been much better considering the time players play as Loki the pacing wasn't there and it was rushed.
×betrayal to the philosophy of the game which is YOU choose the choices and you will get what you deserve , CONSEQUENCES will be there to hunt you.
Thor is such a good boy isn't he he should be forgiven for all the crimes that he did because his daddy Odin didn't loved him?! What? Also for Kratos! he did had reasons to kill all the pantheon in Greece but should he get a happy ending, happy ever after banging Freya??
×We see in all the shrines the champion of jutnar and he has a helmet and yea that's Kratos! clearly thats Loki avenging his Father by bringing down Asgard, I think that they changed the game in the end of development and gone back rewrote the game! Look at Asgard it's a humble residential place for humble Odin! While Tyr temple is just gorgeous and advanced (not only from story telling standpoint but from visuals their choice of making Asgard look the way that it looks in the game is horrendous)
The line that Thor says to Kratos early in the game while fighting him "you think you can come here and become a daddy" and then he resumed "get a clean slate" these don't match you can hear it in Hurst voice (Thor voice actor) what he actually meant and that the second part was added later on.
And most importantly in the previous game there is two statue of Thor featuring different mjulnirs! Yes different mjulnirs one of the status gets destroyed by the big snake and one gets destroyed by Kratos the one that Jurmongandor eats has the different hammer, Jurmongandor comes from a different time line with that other Thor, there was two Thors in the original story one from this time line one from the other also we got our different Jurmongandor in this game! I don't see why we didn't see the other Thor!!
×I think they originally made the game like this: Odin mocks Tyr the same way he did in this game after Broks death they seek out real Tyr they find him and he wants to make peace with Asgard, Loki doesn't like the ways of Tyr (twiddling his giant thumb hoping for the best) he gets distanced from his "selfish" father that wants him safe and away from others affairs he chooses his choice to be a fighter FIGHTING for peace, CONSEQUENCES well death of his beloved glorious daddy to us all KRATOS.
It makes sense play the game again and see for yourself they changed the game and I think they did a big big mistake if they gone through with their original story it would have break the internet,.
But they chose to be "politically correct" lame childish and frankly WRONG.
I think they will see the CONSEQUENCES on sales (they spent $500mil on the game and I don't think they are getting any profits)
    .
p.s: Why I am disappointed in how much it is a childish game not representing real philosophy because in real life in a country named Iran we are fighting against a control freak childkilling dictator and his son right now and... Yea we need to FIGHT to live and to be free.

I’ve been playing God of war since it first came out, and with the hype of the 2018‘s version of god of war, I was expecting this one to match or be greater than the storytelling, but I thought that this game fell short on telling a story, that’s not real plot holes and useless character plug-ins that do not move or develop the story any further. I will have to say in the beginning part of the game it did feel very much alive, but had a very poor middle and end, as if it was rushed to make the completion time which is pretty sad for the ending of the Norse timeline. The gameplay feel very good and refined as an evolution of some sort of the previous game but remains fairly familiar and I think that's fantastic.
On the other hand the story feels rushed and for most of the game it feels pointless roaming around and the final act feels waisted considering the overwhelming amount of material to work with...
It's supposed to be a battle between 9 realms and it amounts to not even a couple hours of playing making it a total waste of an opportunity.

Full of anticipation I started God of War Ragnarök and was allowed to play about 10 minutes in the first hour of play. That means I was allowed to make a difference to Kratos and trigger some Quick Time Events. This has nothing to do with GAming but watching a movie.

The graphics are very good for Playstation 5 conditions and look very detailed at first. Unfortunately, however, it is only decoration. The graphics do not hide the emptiness of the game world and the lack of depth. From time to time you see some birds and abandoned fruit stands and the like. Many objects are really just decoration. They cannot even be destroyed and have been used again and again in the manner of copy past.

Also, the game doesn't offer much of a game. The levels are tube-like. The game offers little urge to discover. On the contrary: It leads you completely through the game world. If you really do not know how to get ahead, your companion will immediately comment on what to do. Sony doesn't trust its gamers to face even the slightest challenge. And these situations hardly occur, because almost everything that is relevant in the game world has been highlighted in color or flashes.

From time to time you get into a kind of pseudo open world in the game world. Don't be fooled. There are small sections that you then leave, collect your collectibles and complete boring side quests that offer no appeal.

The combat system is solid and basically the same as its predecessor. The enemy variants are unfortunately very banal and are rather low. This reinforces the feeling that you are constantly experiencing the same thing in God of War Ragnarök. Run a few meters, some enemies pop up, you knock them down, collect the same loot over and over again, level skills that are rather trivial and improve your equipment. The only thing that carries the game is the Story.

The story here is still the best thing about the game. One would like to know what Kratos, Artreus and his mother are all about. Unfortunately, Sony is exaggerating here again. Yes, violence is part of God of War but in some situations you think Kratos the macho just wants to prove to another macho how great he can be. Some story plots in the game are probably only there to satisfy children's fantasies of a bully.

It's bitter what happened to the Sony Playstation under Jim Ryan aka Lie Cry.

After Horizon Forbidden West had already disappointed me immensely and the game felt like a DLC or ADD ON. God of War Ragnarök makes the same mistake. Sony has been making the mistake here for years. One can only hope that those responsible at Sony will finally step down and that Sony will finally allow MORE DIVERSITY and INNOVATION in their games. Here you can only praise Microsoft and Nintendo. Whether new game series, new gameplay mechanics or simply more variety of genres.

You only get 3 weapons and never get to use thors hammer. Gods where not hard bosses . I felt like i was playing a movie . Good games are few and far between these days . Expand

God Of War? more like dog turd, parenting simulator. where tf is the action? I've seen Kratos lecture Atreus more than he has actually killed. and the game is so **** long. I've been playing it since last year and it's still **** going on. when does this **** kill thor? probably next decade I presume. Atreus is a cuck and delete the game now.

It is just boring. Puzzles are boring, fighting is boring, dialogs are boring and you can't hear all story because every time when you make some action you hear "let's continue in next time".

It's more or less God of War 1.2, not a big improvement. I rate it 8/10.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is NO WAY this game is a 10. The story is written poorly, the addition of a million new characters is too much, and even the visuals aren't as clean and sharp. It's mildly fun to play, but after playing it on and off for 6 months now I'm really starting to hate it. Expand

It's not as good as the first one. It is more of the same, a very long expansion four years too late.

A fully realised world with so much openness and physics and unexpectedness and tonnes of content in every corner. The locations are limited and have little actual logic in them - why must I continually do one-way things that show no one has ever been here before, and yet apparently there are people everywhere who must have needed that path. Why do dwarves build extremely complicated machines that DO NOTHING? Why are deserted areas full of lit fires? The walking around is frustrating. What can I go off that ledge? Why can’t I climb that tiny snowbank? Why can’t I get over that tiny branch? Why must I spend half an hour going around?

Enemies spawn in front of you and then disappear as soon as killed. Loading zones appear every 100m as you crawl through gaps. It’s just all dumb and this breaks the immersion continuously and destroys what story there is. Even the dialogue is so stupid and simple. It’s for kids. It’s like a 90s platformer in 3D.

Most people are rating this game based on the name alone, this game is no better than the previous game, except with more cinematic’s and even on a PS5 it doesn’t even look any better than the previous game, too much walking, talking, and cinematic’s, they are charging $74.99 for these games, they really have to do better, maybe Forspoken will be the GOTY, it’s definitely not this one.

I mean if they changed the name to Dodge of War I'd understand because that's all your doing in most fights. the same Draugers, and overpowered spearmen that kill the GOD OF WAR with one hit is ridiculous.

The characters talk too too much, I'm trying to search for stuff or look at clues and they basically give the whole area away "look at this, look at that" "let's try this or that" In

Atreus and Angraboda (however you spell it) interactions were forced and corny, riding a yak collecting fruit....bro!? I'm trying to finish this game but every time I pick it up, I feel like I've done all this already 1000 times

I played 3 hours and got bored, so $20/hour.
    Dialog is banal, combat repetitive.
    Touchy-feely no workie.
It's a B-movie on rails with underwhelming combat in the middle.

The most overrated game in the world.
This game no more than 7 out of 10, the same elements from the previous game,
Slow and boring gameplay, mediocre story, bad AI enemies, repetitive enemies.
I don't understand how people praise this boring game.
Not worth the $70 price, better to wait for a price discount or not buy this joke at all.

In 2023 we're not used to this linearity. Feels like walking through a tunnel with too much storytelling. Also, the puzzles are based on luck in finding the solution, not intelligence. Very, deeply boring

i dont think there is a more overrated game...despite being very casual and simplistic, combat is ok. but the story and dialogues would just make a bad TV show or movie...I guess this game is just not for me

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is truly disappointing and complete rubbish. It has been a long time since I was so disappointed and even more so with a franchise that has been part of my life. Santa Monica sold us one thing and what we played was another. We were promised Ragnarok, what we got were a couple of small battles in the final chapter, and the worst final battle in the history of the franchise. This game laughs at the oldest fans and pisses on Norse mythology. Cory Barlog and Santa Monica forgot what made GOW great and what made Kratos an excellent character. It wasn't his violence and his desire for revenge that we liked, but how he was sinking deeper into his misery while we controlled him and thought: this isn't right, but it's super epic. And this only for trying to forget the sins he committed. Sins that are completely forgotten in Ragnarok, and leave Kratos as a mere "godkiller". But Kratos is not the only one destroyed in this game, Atreus was too, who throughout his path in the story does not represent at all what would end up happening at the end, all the time we played with him, in the end it was worthless. Freya - A boring character whose ending is literally the same as Ellie's in TLoU2. Jormungandr is completely left out of the background here. Fenrir is useless, Freyr is useless, Angrboda is useless, Surtr is also useless, Sif is also useless, Thrud is also useless, "Tyr" is also useless, so many characters completely wasted. And poor Thor who is made into a family drama, and then his two battles are exactly the same. How cool it would have been to see Jormungandr and Thor fight and then Kratos and Atreus would join them in the fight and kill Thor on top of his arch-enemy, but no, Santa Monica wanted to play save. Then we have the most **** up character at the end: Odin, who was on his way to being almost equal to Zeus as a villain, being a manipulator and megalomaniac, and in the end he ends up being **** suffering the same treatment as Thor and his 2 identical battles, but this time in the end nobody wants to kill him, so a dwarf kills him, literally. Anyway, first I was going to give this game a 7, but then I thought about the hours I spent in slow and boring chapters, with repetitive puzzles and enemies, that I couldn't even do the combos I could do in the previous one, so I decided not to. 4/10 is correct. The soundtrack is ok, and the graphics are spectacular, but, as a GOW fan since I was 12 years old, I can affirm without fear of being wrong that this is without a doubt the worst game in the series. Something that also hurts me is that the ending is so open and ridiculously vague, that there is no foreshadowing of the next thing to come in the saga. But I'm telling you, neither the Egyptians, nor the Japanese, nor the Celtics are going to save this franchise unless Cory Barlog, Santa Monica Studios and Playstation recover the magic of the previous game. They are not going to do it because this Nordic saga will surely sell like 50 million, so for me this franchise is dead, as Kratos should have stayed. All in all, a big piece of **** Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although it is fairly cutscene heavy, the game starts out in the right direction almost immediately uniting you with both friends of old, and foe alike. The combat feels almost identical, however they decided to take away all the moves you learned in the last one only to have you earn them all over again, minus the few that they removed from the game which I honestly felt was a mistake. I honestly feel like the combat was better in the first one, but the transition moves are a nice addition and so are the blue circle parries. They give the combat a bit more of a personality. All the while they attempted to make an upgraded system for gear this time around but it still feels incomplete as they don't give you enough good materials for you to be able to level all your gear up. So what happens is you level the gear you like playing with and that takes away from the ability to level up others that are further behind to the point where there's just no point to change gear and try a different style. essentially you'll always have one or two pieces of gear that are better than the rest and it just doesn't feel rewarding enough to want to go back to try another. Lastly, the game forces you to use Atreus for large portions of the game and they're just so annoying that I couldn't help but turn the game off every time I'd get to one, and it would take me days before I would want to play it again. Even worse is when Atreus goes and meets Angrboda, you spend a solid hour or more riding a yak picking fruit. It's boring, and you literally don't learn anything new. It just goes over everything you've already learned and all of the wasted time picking fruit could easily been removed from the game and simply been a cutscene. It honestly felt like they just added them to break up the monotony and i hated every single minute of it. Thanks to Atreus I will never play through this game a 2nd time. I bought this game for God of War which is Kratos and I simply can't push through the annoying Atreus parts which essentially makes this game unplayable for me which means I wasted my money and have no choice but to rate this as such Expand

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
