I don't know what it is but I just can't get into Ragnarok after 100%ing it's predecessor. Maybe because at the beginning you are treading the same ground of the first game. The combat is different and I can't explain it. Instead of a badass God of War eviscerating enemies, it feels like you are slowly chipping away at the health of most foes. Often you are fighting multiple foes at once, so when you are chipping away at one enemy another one is always trying to stab you in the back so you need to Dodge, Duck, Dip, Dive and Dodge out of the way every few hits. Makes combat slow and tedious. Doesn't help that the enemies feel like reskins of ones from the original game. I played 10ish hours and lost interest. Maybe I'll try again after some time and see if it get back into it. I might have to go back to God of War and play again to try and see if it's the game or if it's just me that feels different. The gameplay has the same weird issues with enemiess being able to interrump your hits, but being able to continue attacking you while they have an axe hitting them in their face, I am not talking about bosses... just random enemies.

Narrative wise, the game is just not as engaging as the previous. Some characters this time around are just annoying, making them hard to relate to.

Sometimes the game is fun, but most of it is a walking simulator with gorgeous places and lots of cinematic scenes, but very little gameplay. Very linear and boring trough some sections, specially when you play as Loki. I prefer gow 2018 over ragnarok, it had more gameplay and freedom.

Unfortunately, this one felt like a struggle for the first 20 hours, and that soured me for the rest of the play through. The story didn't feel like it got going until the first time you played as Atreus. Other than that is was; go here, press button, go back there, press button, since and repeat. It was really mind numbering and felt like filler. It also didn't help that the combat felt more like a chore this time.

The other thing I found really lacking in this one was the wonderment. Number 1 had so many jaw-dropping moments of sheer wonderment and imagination; Freyr's turtle/house, the realm machine, the realm of the elves Alfheim - I could go on and on. The variation of foes, locations, creatures, etc was inspiring.

The story in Ragnarok does have a lot of heart though, and is the best thing about the whole experience, but again, it takes way too long for it to kick into gear.

Overall, for me, it would have been a far stronger game with more wonderment and less bloating and filler. I've played it once, and that will be it, I have zero desire to go through it again.

In the course of the story, you pass by everywhere 3 times anyway. This means that you have to pass the same places very often.... Phew.

The battle system is also overloaded. They should have done it in Dark Souls or Elden Ring. I didn't use all the options because I always played my way anyway. Besides, everything doesn't seem as precise as in Elden Ring. You always have the feeling that you lack control.

I felt so much more freedom in GOW 2018, here devs are hand-holding the player all the time.

Ragnarök completely forgets what made GOW 2018 narrative so good - it was minimal but effective at telling a very personal story. This one tries to be epic but it's completely unfocused. For most of the game there is no clear goal or objective, the heroes just roam different realms doing errands, wondering what's next and where they should even go. And yeah, Ragnarök is coming... I guess. Kratos is a passive passenger in his own game, the rest of the characters are either a complete letdown (Tyr) of annoying (Atreus).

Gameplay is fine but it's wasted on trite mission objectives & linear level design. The game was supposed to be semi open-world but for most of it you're on a extremely linear path either in a straight corridor, combat room or just meandering, listening to endless exposition. Combat and enemies get really repetitive real fast. I don't recommend playing the game on higher difficulty modes. It's very poorly conceived - hard mode is more of a chore rather than challenge. The enemies become damage sponges and most get "super armor" (they don't react to stuns, staggers, juggle starters, etc). At some point I just changed it to normal:/

It blows my mind that this game is getting so many 10/10s and being labeled a "masterpiece". It's an extremely flawed title - the story sucks, the game is very linear and overly simplistic in its design, constantly taking agency away from the player. I really wanted to like this one but came away sorely disappointed:(

It's decent but good graphics and cutscenes alone do not a 'game of the year' make. It feels like all gameplay could be considered Cut Content from the 2018 release. More of the same.

It's been out for almost 3 months and most bugs I've encountered are minor... Until now. 43 hours in, I have a game breaking bug that I cannot fix - not by reloading autosave files. Checking online there

Expand

A technical marvel undermined by rigid and uninspired gameplay, Netlfix-tier writing, and an over-earnest story which is far too introspective for its own good. I can't say that I particularly enjoyed playing it, to be honest; it was oddly boring, which is perhaps the most damning indictment of a game about gods killing each other I could offer.

I liked God Of War (2018), but this game feels like a step back. It plays too secure, with almost no innovation with respect to the 2018 game. I think they also stretched the game with very boring content, I had to make an effort to finish it. It had some good moments but it is very far from being a masterpiece in my opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You can tell the talent of the game left midway through. After the first fights with Freya and Thor the game never hits the same tempo or intensity. The end fights are very mediocre and rushed not something I expected from such a great and usually polished franchise. They also hint at fighting Ragnorok himself, but they throw that out the window real fast. Fenrir barely makes an impact for what his role should be.

All and all very disappointed with the scale of the big boss fights and the rushed ending. Just Baldurs first fight in GOW 1 created a ravine! That's how crazy the fight was. You'd think a fight against an even stronger opponent like Thor would cause something like that, but no. It starts off strong and when you fight him again it's pathetic in comparison.

A game is something that allows us to feel like its characters are living in the past/future or oven reality in which you would not trip in any circumstances. A game creates possibilities to participate in activities you physically couldn't and dialogues you wouldn't ever hear.
That's what good a game does. But Ragnarok constantly makes me feel like I'm at work in an office or listening to a teenager who thinks his parents do not understand him, or in a mall hearing a fight of a couple arguing about how drunk a man was last night. Who in a sane mind decided to put this casual style of dialogue in Scandinavian folklore? Who ever thought it was a good idea to hear "Ummm, yeah, dad, like whateveeeer" all the time progressing through the game? That killed all the immersion you are waiting for from promised setting. Even GoW 2018, with all the changes they did compare to the original games, did not allow this kind of crap.

Do not get me wrong, the story is fine and appealing, but the dialogue does not belong to the time in which the game is set. And GoW is not a new Shrek cartoon where mixing fantasy and current urban dialogues was a thing.
Also, to add to setting thing. I do not believe that Thrud might put some shame on Thor in front of other warriors and get away with it. Neither do I believe in Atreus's typical teenage attitude whining that grown-ups do not understand him. That was not in mythological epos in the original games, and that was not even there in GoW 2018; why it had to be put in the latest game? That is not God of War, that is a modern-life sitcom. I would accept this in JRPG due to the ruled-out setting, but not in a game that changed its rules. The game did not help me to escape reality, but it did help to see modern life problems in fantasy. Thanks a lot.

Now, it would not be that harmful if everything else is fine. Which should be for a AAA Sony exclusive, right? Right?
Well, I've expected more from a game delivered in 2022. Invisible walls in the face of obstacles that should be easily bypassed by God are everywhere. Of course, that's just a regular game conditionality, but for a game in 2000, not a 2022 one. The platforming part is boring. Even the original series had some variations with freedom to climb and QTE scenes, but here in 2022 platforming is just an interactive loading screen, nothing more.

There are fewer changes that you would expect from a sequel, which is not bad, but all of them did not save from awful storytelling. 2018's GoW isn't the good old GoW we had, but it has grown along with us, but sequel made me think that I am a dumb teenager.

The developers will never have another chance at making a game about these characters in the ragnarok setting. Don't get me wrong its a good game, but lower your expectations for the story. I mean almost every enemy explode when they die, they all have missile attack and unbreakable move and it felt poor, very poor compared to the first game. I also didn't care about the godzillion runes or useless items. The menu screen is really ugly and side-quests, lore and exploring too rigid. I played the first one twice and this one I will skip chests, some side-quests, didn't care about reading stuff and will not play it again. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The fact that people consider this a 10/10 title is a perfect reflection of the state of video games today. The only 10/10 thing about this game is the graphics and performance on PS5. That's it.

Artreus has somehow become an even more intolerable character than in the previous game. They choose to go the Marvel route with all of the "villain" Gods. None of them serious, none of them epic, all of them full of **** one liners and seemingly the same personality. Odin is a small old man that comes off like Peter Baylish from Game of Thrones, it's so anti-climatic.

Additionally the first part of the game is all about Tyr and finding Tyr. Man, I wish we never found him because he was as much of a dissapointment as Odin. Boring, annoying, peace loving and all around just a poorly written character. Honestly, almost everyone and everything is annoying about this game.

Mimir and Brock - two characters I loved from the first game are completely overbearing this time around and shove their humor in your face. It's just too much.

Narrative of the year? How does a game that's 50% of the dialogue "I need to save Artreus. I only care about Artreus. I don't care this is about Artreus" really wins that award. **** hilarious.

I put 30 hours into this game, it's a gorgeous but hallow follow up to what I thought was an enjoyable God of War 2018 title. There is one new weapon in this game and the move set for the Axe and Chains are largely unchanged.

6/10 and I think that's being generous for the effort from the last title. Buy on Sale.

Also, if any developers sees this, PLEASEEEEE add the option to turn off the "hints" from Mimir and Atreus when it comes to puzzles. I don't like to rush gameplay. I like to look around and soak in the environment, but every time I reach a puzzle section, Atreus and Mimir immediately shout out the answer and tell me what to do and ruin he puzzle for me. Please give us the option to stop that!

Other major problems: (please improve these for the next game)
*** Traversal still sucks!!! Invisible walls everywhere. It doesn't make any sense which area Kratos can jump to and which area he cannot. It feels like a maze rather an an open or semi-open world.

*** Platforming still sucks! Games like Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, or Tomb Raider might not be perfect, but they still do a much better job when it comes to platforming and traversal. Reaching a specific area and pressing "x" just to watch Kratos climb is not that much fun, believe it or not.

*** Those two points above causes exploration/traversal to be so SLOW and frustrating. I don't care that the game looks gorgeous when I have to spend 5 minutes just to move a few feet on the map because Kratos can't jump over a small tree log.

*** Lastly, camera is still way zoomed in for this type of game. If possible, please give us a better (larger) FOV. This kind of over the shoulder camera works for something like Resident Evil because of its claustrophobic nature, but for a game like GoW it just causes a lot of cheap and frustrating deaths from attacks coming off-camera.

I respect all the effort that went into making this game, and it's clear that the developers put a lot of effort and care into it, but the improvements from the 2018 game are very minimal and it juts feels like playing an expansion of the same game.

    Thank you!

Both Thor and Odin felt super inconsequential despite their hype, we barelly got to see anything special from the Aesir, Asgard as a realm was also super disappointing there is absolutely nothing new there and when Odin and Thor were defeated it felt weightless and unmoving.

Fights like Jormungadr vs Thor we didn't even get to see anything, so incredibly underwhelming...

All that aside this is still a good game to play, just don't get your hopes up from big names and popular cultural references such as a Ragnarok, this game lore wise leaves much to crave for and none of the main bosses are all that challenging even though they look pretty good animation wise.

Due to how underwhelming this game was I'm never getting hyped for this series again, but sure I'll keep playing it.

This game is supposed to be the biggest triple AAA on PS5, but the game has nothing spectacular, the game doesn't make you feel the same experience as GoW 2018. *Graphics*: Same graphics of GoW 2018 but worse performance, fog covering everything but popping still visible now and then. Graphics wise speaking; this game is a 80$ DLC.
*AI*: Functional, there is obvious hints NPC's IA was not tested enough on all scenarios. This is one of the worst IA i've seen in most recent AAA games to be honest.
*Plot*: Mind blowing, if this game was a book it could be a best seller.
*Story telling*: There is a problem with story telling pace in this game, it is obvious to me Santa Monica tried to make this game as extended as possible for "only god knows" reasons, this game could be easily a 12 hours well paced frenetic video game, but Santa Monica extended the game up to 25 hours artificially by using cheap tricks like hidden loading screens and boring submissions with boring enemies EVERYWHERE, Santa Monica really messed it up in this regard.
*Conclusion*: Enjoyable, but, it is not worthy enough for a 80$ price tag, this game is screaming for a PS5 remaster from day 1, such a shame...

    5. I know its a linear game and not an open world but this have unnaceptable invisible walls for 2022. I have a puddle of water 3 feet away there is only grass but i cannot reach the puddle lol.
    6. this is because its crossed gen but still desapointing outdated level design.
    7. I remember back in the old GOW all the puzzle were different and some were tricky and you could die, the climbing in the previous GOW was more epic not jusct climbing mountains... example climbing on an actual titan, I feel the Reboot version of GOW lost some of its Scale epicness.
I liked the 2018 game but this one is the The one that is now reaching a point of boredom.

I still give 6 because we can see dev have worked hard on the game but i think the effert were not put at the right place.

In comparison Elden ring from software took their dark souls franchise but cranked everything by 100. made it open world, made exploration viceral the rewards were always a surprise, a freedom of exploration, they added great things like gorse combat they managed to really improve the magic.. they made incredible art visual even if the graphics were not the best.

To me Gow feel like a rushed uninpiring game. The story was ok but like i said half of it was boring and could have been cutted to make it a way more viceral and well paced experience.

    Let's start with the gameplay.

It is the exact same as the first God of War. There isn't much there in terms of gameplay evolution, this could be fine if the story was better however it is not as well written as the previous. I personally believe this is due to the dumbing down of the overall design.

The puzzles in the gameplay frankly are a zero out of ten. Not because of the puzzles themself most are easy enough but due to the NPCS literally being on a 25 second timer to flat out tell you exactly how to do the puzzle. The designers don't even give you a single minute to try and figure it out before whatever NPC you are with explaining what to do and then rushing you along once you finish the puzzle. It is incredibly infuriating and is very telling of who this game was designed for.

To put it simply the target audience of this game, is not serious gamers. It is people who do not like video games, or people who really just wanted to watch a movie. The NPCS rush you along through puzzles, long stretched out moments of just walking and dialogue, basic gameplay with no major evolutions. The highest difficulty feels like what the normal difficulty would be on a game made 12 years ago.

This game is designed for the lowest common denominator and frankly it's insulting to be treated like an idiot by the game itself, but that is one of the dead giveaways to who it is designed for.

The Sony formula is getting stale and the people who find this design appealing are dwindling. It has become an echo chamber of Sony fan boys while genuine criticism gets swished away as petty hate. This game doesn't even deserve to be nominated for GOTY yet alone win it.

But GOTY awards need money and I'm sure Sony is willing to pay.

Mid experience, mid, gameplay, atrociously annoying nps. Worth 15 dollars on sale.

Kratos gets staggered and interrupted by every little hit. Paired with his heavy and rather slow movements this is a recipe for deseaster. Instead of acting (you are supposed the GOD OF WAR after all) you are only reacting. Every little fight turns into a game of 3D chess with zero room for mistakes. And that is at the lowest difficulty setting and all accessibility options enabled to make it easier.
After beating Ragnarok I played the first God of War again and it is SO MUCH MORE FUN!
I did all the extra content there, Ivaldis workshop and even all the Valkyries! But with Ragnarok I had many rage-quit moment was happy to put the controller down.
This is a major design issue! Dear developers, let us have fun! You are not the arbiters of what fun gameplay is. Don't force us down narrow gameplay paths just because you are so proud of some specific system or another. It's bad design and Forbidden West had the same problem (like more elemental damage types than you have weapon slots). Sometimes, more is less.
Also, what is with the fleeing enemies? Half of the time Kratos is running around, chasing after enemies. If I want to herd chickens, there are other games for that. There is little more annoying in gaming than enemies that make you chase after them constantly.
I'll go play God of War now... the good one, not the frustrating, annoying one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay was fun and there were plenty of options for different builds depending on your play style. I had a great time exploring different areas and never felt overwhelmed by sidequests. Every area seemed to have a purpose to serve which made the flow of the game very well crafted. The visuals were impressive on the ps5. I enjoyed the game overall.. until the end.
The ending was disappointing. I didn't feel anything to be honest. I went through a very generic feeling battlefield, plot points felt useless. It was so much build up just to have nothing interesting or noteworthy happen. Ragnarok shows up to do... nothing. Glad that quests means nothing. Now that gos sacrifice means literally nothing. It make the games writing feel cheap. The finally vattle itself was.... not challenging. I didn't feel like Odin lived up to being the villain he was hyped up to be. Everything felt to easy, things felt unnecessary. I think the ending ruined it for me, great game otherwise

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Massive disappointment and a watered down follow up to the 2018 classic. Back in 2018 Kratos was still powerful and you always had the feeling his angry powerful self was still there, he is just trying his best to hide it. Fast forward to Ragnarok and Kratos is completely neutered...needs help finishing fights against powerful foes and doesn't even want to fight to begin with. Midway through he also wants to give up and go home. He needs other characters to make decisions for him in fear of upsetting them if he made them himself.

I honestly don't even know why Kratos is part of this game in the first place...the entire game you run around with Atreus and Freya's objectives in mind. They could easily have left Kratos out of the game and the story would not have changed. Expect tons of talking about feelings...even mid war as you storm down on Asgard, the supposed highlight of the game, Kratos finds time to preach to Atreus he needs to be himself and care about others. To tell him to be better for the 20th time...I mean seriously.

What happened to the serious, god conquering hero we grew to love up until now? Furthermore, cool lines like "don't be sorry, be better" in the 2018 classic is repeated so much and watered down I ended up hating the line and not ever wanting to hear it again. In the last mission alone the phrase "be better" must've been repeated 25 times. This game is your typical new age no accountability, political corrected, everyone has their reasons so nobody is really bad nonsense. To top it all off, Atreus does more damage to enemies swinging his bow than Kratos does with a magical axe, magical spear and the blades of chaos...WTF!!

Kratos has been reduced to a grunt to do the heavy lifting and do others dirty work but this game was just about Freya's redemption and Atreus' story. Kratos has 0 story in this game except for trying to be a sensitive father. The best part of the game was when Atreus left at the end so I can only play as Kratos. The production value is great, soundtrack boring and twists predictable. Graphics are really good and the world's are fantastic.

However, they tried making God of War an emotional relatable game and characters...something it never was. When Brok died I couldn't care less because we never had an emotional connection with him. It is incomparable to a moment such as Vesemir dying in Witcher 3...a character you actually cared about. The dwarves are also way too involved and I can't help but think this game was fan service to be cool with its over the top humor, most which is not funny, playing as Atreus and Kratos caring waaaaay too much. It is worth a play, but don't expect to be wowed by the over the top action and epic don't care attitude of a powerful god of war Kratos like the first games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Cons:
-The title of the game is Ragnarok, however Ragnarok is only the last 20 minutes of the main story, 99% of the game is more about Fimbulwinter
-"Giant stuff" aka we writers just do whatever we want whenever we want, and we don't have to make sense or be consistent, or establish anything prior
-The camera, way too zoomed in for the combat
    -Plotlines that go nowhere
-Random characters suddenly dying all heroically with 0 prior development, or being introduced with no reason or purpose, go nowhere, serve nothing
-The 2nd fight with Thor was underwhelming as hell, with less epic and scale than the first fight. Literally everything was less. Didn't live up to the incredible hype built up around it at all, like c'mon, it was supposed to be the titans of the verse clashing
-Generally the invasion of Asgard is lame, all the cool stuff happens in the background while you're running around killing same old tired enemies in small arenas
-Freyr's character is just terrible, he's more marvel than the squirrel
-The new Valk queen has much smaller moveset than Sigrun, not nearly as developed
-Atreus’ movelist is not developed enough, it starts off fine, even good, but becomes stale starting from mid-game. He has 1 weapon that has smaller moveset than 1 weapon with Kratos, even though Kratos has 3

-Angrboda is black for no reason. Kratos and Atreus are not a counterargument to this, for a simple reason that Kratos ISN'T norse, he's a Greek immigrant, it's not like they took a norse character and made him Greek, while Aterus is obviously half-greek because his father is. It's a fundamental difference. There was needed an explanation on why Angrboda is black, some south African god immigrated to Scandinavia and mixed with giants just a generation ago or something. I'm not against them taking creative freedoms, including with heritages of characters, but there has to be a reason and a purpose. The way it stands she's just black out of nowhere for no reason. The same is true for the Boar
-Angrboda, she's also a plot device that just appears whenever and wherever the plot needs her
-Sif has an ugly square face(personal gripe i admit)
-No breasts in the game. This can be a valid complaint, the franchise used to deliver on this front. I don't understand why they stopped? Because they were trying to make the games more mature? Then well deliver it in more of a mature way. I personally didn't like how old games approached nudity and erotica. There was a space for improvement, instead they just completely removed this side of the series(Have Atreus make Sif hold a door while naked, but also not let her die - progress!)

-Mimir unironically turned into Memer, character regression
-Kratos might as well join the avengers at this point
-Kratos:"To win in a war you must be ready to sacrifice everything!", literally 15 minutes later "I was wrong, we won't sacrifice these randoms". I get the idea, but the pacing, the execution.. it just doesn't work
-Marvel type of dialogue all throughout the game
-Tyr was ACTUALLY ALIVE, for NO **** reason, just WHY?
-Freya is annoying as hell, even her mid-combat dialogue, she backseats all the time, with very annoying mannerism. She's also old and ugly, which doesn't fit because she's supposed to be the goddess of fertility. I also don't like that she forgave Kratos, but i was on Baldur's side in their conflict in the first game. To the end she refused to understand him, which is one of the reasons why he ended up dead, her allowing Baldur to try to kill her was her fundamentally misunderstanding what he wants from her. The game never calls her out on this

-Odin kills Thor for literally no goddamn reason, a plot contrivance in attempt of portraying him as completely unlikable intrinsic evil. The entire situation is a plot contrivance, it's just trash. First Kratos and Thor are fighting and even when it's clear that Thor won't be winning Odin doesn't interfere at all, even though Thor is his best shot at getting rid of Kratos, he just lets Kratos defeat Thor and spare him. What was the plan with coming RIGHT AFTER the fight and starting to nag on Thor, even though Thor just lost? Clearly the best course of actions would be to interfere before Thor lost and tag team Kratos. Generally Odin was turned into senile old ****** the last stretch of the game for the sake of the cheap plot the writers wanted to tell
-Why did Odin not tell Heimdall about the Draupnir Spear? Why did Odin allow Heimdall to leave Asgard even though it was the safest place possible, and the risk of him failing was Ragnarok itself? Why did he even allow him to carry the ******* horn with him? Obviously because writers wanted Ragnarok to happen, and didn't know any other way to do it without turning Odin into a ******

    Pros:
They're obvious, i mean i gave the game 6/10 even though i complained about it non-stop above. The 2018 was great, so with that kind of foundation it was never going to be trash

After 4 years of development we got reused animations rehashed levels copy paste combat same crappy camera.

The story sucks big time here after all the buildup that is the excellent God of War 2018 there is nothing like that it in this game.

Atreus is still an annoying b*tch even worse you have to play as him multiple times which ruïnes the pacing

Enemy design is still bland no big enemies to fight like in the old games, bosses feel samey and boring you never have to change tactics.

And when you finally reach the final level (Asgard) it is over in like 15 minutes of fighting the same enemies you have been fighting for the past 20 hours and fight Thor who you don't even get to kill (gets killed in the cutscene) and then fight odin who dies in like 5 minutes and the credits.

This game is an unfinished mess

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To summarize my thoughts, the story of Ragnarok was an objective step down from 2018. Which in hindsight was a step down from the original games. I kinda knew this was coming because 2018 wasn't about the Norse gods, not really. It was about Kratos and Atreus bonding with Baldur and all that drama being a roadblock to Jotunheim. Ragnarok was already in a bad spot because it removed the personal aspects of the story and went for this crappy Endgame style war and team up thing. Marvel-tier writing is all over the game and I can't emphasize enough how much I think the MCU has **** up modern entertainment. Constant quips and jokes undercutting moments that are supposed to be serious.

I think what I consider the biggest red flag is how much contempt the writers seem to have for Kratos as a character. It's ironic they made him a grumpy, boring sad dad when the writing in Rag was clearly more suited to the high energy warrior he used to be. I wonder how much of that is Anthony Burch trying to feminize our ashen boi which he literally admitted to wanting to do on Twitter. I've found myself reguarly going back to GOW 2 and 3 because, shockingly, Kratos was a much funner character when he was a man on a mission. All this **** about him being deep now is pure history revision because Kratos was always a **** deep character. The plot of 3 is literally him hiding his extreme pain behind his god killing vengeance.

Atreus is annoying and most of the dialogue with him and Kratos is the exact same conversation over and over. "We should start Ragnarok" "No we shouldn't" again and again. I actually did like Odin, but he was underwhelming just like the rest of Asgard, which is literally a bunch of shacks for some reason. Did anyone else feel like the design for Asgard doesn't fit the established aesthetic of giant golden temples and ****

Finally, I'm already seeing this cope that if the game was broken into 2 it would've been better. But here's the thing: Ragnarok is like 36 hours and only 6 of those are good. If they couldn't fill out half the game's runtime with good content then what the **** makes you think a third game would've magically fixed everything? It's like Game of Thrones, sure we can insist that more time, and longer seasons would've made it a better ending but the exact same events would've still come to pass and people would still be pissed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I am so happy for anyone who enjoyed this game, I am just not one of them.

I really loved the last game, and I really really wanted to love this one. I don't have that much time to game on PS5, so when I finally did.

I think lots of my gripes with this game come from the fact that it seems to be developed for PS4 first and PS5 as an afterthought.

I was excited about PS5 and the basically no loading times thing which promissed very different approach to level design. And I got none of it here. I got a PS4 game that was really really good at wasting so much of my time by constantly making me do things that usually hide loading new environments. THe game is just non-stop about lifting stones/tree trun/squeezing through tight spots with the same animation every single time. Things that I understood in PS4 era, like the world tree travel sequence, slow riding around etc. I don't know - Ijust hoped for something more exciting.
Also the strict definition of areas with free exploration and linear level are so harshly separated, it reminded me of Pokemon Sword/Shield and again made me sad, we couldn't get something more seamless (at the same time I like that the game didn't turn into classic gigantic openworld with tons of boring things to do to clear every icon on the map).

Another thing connected to level design - the game is full of invisible barriers and in its story parts, it really is just a corridor. And maybe it is just me, but I feel like in 2023 (22) it is not a big ask to make these barriers more natural looking, or maybe go another way around it. If you have a character, that in cutscene jumps 100 meters and then you have to go around through crazy puzzles to crost 1m tall fence, it just really breaks the immersion.

Maybe it is just me not keeping up with videogames anymore, but I really really do not enjoy Souls like games. (this kinda ruined Jedi Fallen Order for me) and I feel like the bossfights (especially the non compulsory ones) got much closer into this direction, which is perfectly fine, but I really didn't care for it. It just feels so unbalanced, when you fight against some famous deities and it feels so much easier than trying to kill some random undead captain in the middle of nowhere. Also it feels like something happened with development in the second half of the game and the bossfights are just very generic and are nowhere near the quallity of the first game (or even the first half of this game).

Regular fights felt mostly great although enemies are mostly forgettable and a lot of times reused from the previous game. Especially with the axe. Here I thought they could have done more with the Dual Sense controller. It feels uneven. While there are moments the controller is really usedw well, there are many when it feels less immersive than the dual shock. But hey, I guess I just go spoiled by Astro's playroom... I don't know.

The most lackluster part of gameplay is the parts where you play as Atreus, which just doesn't feel nearly as good as playing as Kratos and yet you spend significant portion of the game playing as him, athough I do loke some of the story beats there.

Generally the best part of the story is the second half of Kratos and Atreus story. At first, we get a lot of fairly lazy witing creating drama out of witholding information for no explained reason + it feels generally like a setback of Kratos and Atreus's relationship from the first game. Kratos is still grumpy and doesn't trust Atreus and Atreus is still doing things behind his back and it really feels like it undone good bit of the character development from earlier. At some point in the story, when they finally start trusting each other, things improve and we got some really good story moments that I enjoyed. I generally very much enjoy Kratos and Christopher Judge's voice acting, the game shines when Kratos is present.

I also very much like how they potrayed Thor, his family and their story and I while mechanically I didn't enjoy Ironwood level, it was one of the more beutiful ones, I loved Angrboda as a character and her use of color in attacking was one of the finest moments of the game. Bossfight connected to this level is also one of the more original ones.

Most of the enviromental puzzles aren't really about logic, but mostly about trying to find that one thing, that will make it all work. And by find I mean literally find it in the level, not find out how it all works together, so most of the time the puzzles seem like they are there just to slow me down. That is especially true in a level, with a truly giant bossfight, where after is done and this very intense fight is over, we still need to do a boring puzzle just to get out of level - that in my book is not great level design.

I really think that maybe it is just me, maybe my preferences have changed over years, I just really could not get into the mechanics, or care about anybody else than the main two protagonists.

Graphically its wildly uneven. Kratos is one of the best animated characters I've seen in a video game, but any flashback scenes with his wife look like he's speaking to a PS3 character.

The writing is weak. Atreaus/Loki is done an injustice. You could tie yourself in knots trying to make sense of his actions and motivations if you were in a forgiving mood, but the game fails to illustrate him as a rational actor. A central plot tension coming from a totally artificial reluctance from one character to explain what he's doing, "It's... complicated" *sigh*. New additions to Kratos' posse grate. The smart alec squirrel wandered out of a forgotten kids show, and the dwarf with the caricatured Southern American accent jars with the world. Kratos has never been funnier, with the writers and Christopher Judge demonstrating a real understanding of the character and using that for laughs that don't take you out of the story, but everyone else is a trite Joss Whedon quip machine.

Level design and traversal are the games weakest areas. The designers have saddled Kratos with a serious case of White Boys Can't Jump. You'll feel incredibly restricted in how you traverse the environment in a way that isn't true to the character. The chest is right there, but this gap isn't programmed to allow a jump, sorry. The game feels on rails and the issue becomes more apparent as you revisit areas you've since cleared of enemies and have to slowly squeeze through gaps or shimmy across ledges while the next corridor loads. Completionists in particular are in for tedium.

Combat has enough satisfying depth to reward high skill players, but the RPG elements are a distraction with few making a meaningful addition to combat.

Honestly don't get the hype. This game does has some (yes SOME) nice looking graphic areas but certain areas (especially the puddle filled mine) looks terrible to me. For bragging about how good their game looks you'd think Sony would have removed those AWFUL reflections in the puddles! Jesus they look like ps3 blur!!

As for gameplay, it's the same ol' same ol'. Like it brings not much

The game has several bugs. Some of them don't let me advance on the adventure. Others makes Atreus walk like a Blender 3d model. The fog is everywhere, and don't let me see the landscape. The movements are all from the previous game. There is almost no improvements in graphics, considering the GoW 2018 game. The PS5 version looks the same as the PS4 version. There is nothing new here for me.

Technically very impressive, but also quite boring.

The game takes you to some really neat looking areas and then has you walk, canoe, or otherwise travel around them, while characters just vomit exposition at you. It's like one long cutscene after another, except you're technically playing because you're controlling the walking/traversal. The main combat can be fun, but there's

The main combat can be fun, but there's not enough of it.

The boss fights can be quite enjoyable, but there aren't all that many of them, compared to how much time you spend with the boring parts I mentioned.

I had high hopes for this, but found I spent the majority of the time bored.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not bad, but this has already been seen too much already. They recycle areas, animations and enemies and NPCs can be annoying when solving the puzzles that one finds. Playing with the brat Atreus is disgusting. Combat improves a little from the last game, but not enough for it to be top notch. Expand

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
