    Sadly, it's a continuous misdirection action game. It's a shame they didn't embrace the old series core combo system. GoW3 is still the best God of War overall.

Too many bugs , great story and gameplay but the bugs are just killing my experience of the the game, one that I honestly cant get around is when after ragnarok im trying to go to Svartalfheim from any other realm but crates gets caught in what looks like a scene and I can t use any of the weapons, or even run, dying isn't a option and even restartibg to the previous checkpoint does not work.… Expand

    It’s kind of like a DLC for god of war 2018. If you really really really loved GoW 2018 then you might enjoy this game, but I thought I loved it, and now I can’t even finish ragnarok. Im waiting till I can smoke weed again to play this game because it’s just not that good

    Great graphics and a technical masterpiece but besides that there is not much to enjoy. My biggest issue with this game is that it is boring to play and that the writing is a huge step down from the first game. Game feels like a hallway simulator with really bad puzzle design. Built up certain things in the first game then did a complete 180 in the second. My all time favourite series turned to crap. No Valhalla??? 'Explore the 9 realms' biggest over statement of all times. 4 realms and a few side areas. Combat is a mess. side characters don't follow when they are meant to. Can be attacked during Kratos special attacks but cannot stop them to defend?? Inconsistent mess when attacking enemies, sometimes your moves will stun them other times they will keep coming? Makes it nearly impossible to plan a battle strategy. The only decent strategy is to avoid using special attacks.

    No Mjolner???? Yet it comes in the collectors/Jotnar edition. I feel genuinely ripped off.

    Finally I wanted to kill Odin and Thor. This was built up so heavily in 2018 and now we are just OK to forgive everyone? Atreus asks Kratos at one point 'is it always OK to kill those who are trying to kill you" Kratos responds 'yes'. But now we don't want to kill them? Thor's 'redemption arc' was so badly done. He was told to go with Atreus so now he's a good guy and we forgive him? it's just bad writing. Again, a 3rd game could have solved this. rushed.

    There is a lot of good in the game. If you just want more of 2018 (but less polish) more of the same plus a few new areas. it's fine. It's entertaining enough. But compare it to 2018 and it's a disaster. Even worse it's an intentionally designed disaster.    … Expand

    Go watch some gow3 gameplay with its musical score, blood and gore and compare this, you'll realize how utterly boring and tame ragnarok is. No blood splatter, blades feel weak, can't jump, music is stupid, enemy variety is minimal, even spartan "god of war" behaves like a gentleman, my grandfather used to be more fierce!!

    The game mechanics are better than those of gow 2018 but they have thrown overboard the incredible story that Norse mythology could give. this game was doomed since they decided on two games instead of three. I feel cheated.
    the 2018 story had just the right level of drama and depth. in this game everything is varnished with an extra layer of crying and well-being

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm left with an overall deflated feeling of disappointment after so much anticipation and love for the franchise. Compared with the 2018 masterpiece, Ragnarok certainly underdelivers in many ways, with my biggest frustration in the confused plot lines, unanswered questions, rushed climax and poor storytelling.

    I thought the introduction of Angboder would have more of a significant impact to the story. I thought the giants entrapped in marbles would be pivotal to Ragnarok glory. Where was Fenrir in the war? What was the point of focussing so much of the game around the mask only for it to be a throw away? I thought changing the prophesies was weak and that Kratos should have been killed by Heimdoll (maybe returning as a Valkyrie sent from Odin). I really felt annoyed with that fact that peace was not made with Sindri, and losing this comedy from the game was very damaging to the overall feeling for the player. Atreus morphing into bears and wolves were so underutilized and even weren't used at all in the final battles. Why did Faye betray her people? Is it Loki or Atreus?

    The franchise just went the wrong direction to abandon it's flashy combo and vengeance of Krotos. They tried hard to be tlou+ souls game adventure game.

    In 2023, FF16 is just a better choice if you're looking for a game with fun action combo and fascinating story.

    The default difficulty will have anyone breezing through every scenario without a single death. The harder difficulties increase enemy health a ludicrous amount, while ensuring that the offscreen projectile spam stops every combo (thanks to an insane lack of any dodge offset type of feature). The camera is atrocious and    Gameplay is horribly below the industry standard for action games.

    The default difficulty will have anyone breezing through every scenario without a single death. The harder difficulties increase enemy health a ludicrous amount, while ensuring that the offscreen projectile spam stops every combo (thanks to an insane lack of any dodge offset type of feature). The camera is atrocious and will neuter your characters movement when trying to switch targets. No replay value whatsoever due to long un-skippable talking and walking scenes. The single-camera presentation is ruined by an insane amount of menu usage all in the service of terrible RPG elements that hardly influence the combat.

    The writing in this game is just as bad. No subtlety, every character says exactly how they feel. All plot points involve a MacGuffin, just like the last game. The vast majority of character conflicts come from a contrived lack of communication. Many of the character beats are poorly motivated as well. The story tries to explore themes of family and fate, but nothing new is said. Being an abusive person is bad. Letting other people decide your fate is bad. In gameplay, the characters yell the solution to every puzzle before giving the player a chance to observe the puzzle's elements. While in combat, the side characters constantly yell to use a shield strike to stun enemies. Any sense of immersion the game is trying to build is destroyed as soon as the player takes control.

    There are also game-breaking bugs littered throughout. I feel like I have been tricked by both reviewers and developers into buying this game.    … Expand

    Anyway, it is just the same game as 2018 game. It has a lot of cuts seen, linear experience. You do not feel like a god ...their is no epic fight seen. I think they focus more on the narrative and the story. sadly, it did not clic with me .....

    While falling a little short of its predecessor in the grand gameplay moments i love its predecessor for, the beautiful story and characters are pushed forward and forfill their potentials. There is room for a DLC and I hope we get it!

My biggest gripe with this game is how characters speak, behave and swear like the most normal, distinctly modern people, with their divinity and unique existence as gods being almost completely ignored. Immortal gods are made to deliver some of the strangest, most casual lines like walking into someone's home and saying "Nice place." or complaining about their "moms" and how typical they are. Words like yep, yeah, kinda, sorta, pretty are used just like in the modern day. Odin is just a mafia boss who yells at the dwarves "hey, it's me, your whole economy is speaking to you!", completely ruining the immersion into the game.

    Casual writing can have its place to break the tension or as comedic relief, but in Ragnarok the villains, main characters and side characters all engage in this kind of dialogue, making everything feel constantly comedic.

    The graphics are gorgeous, the combat remains the same as in the previous game, and it feels like a Marvel AAA casual movie, rather than a videoGAME. A game this focused on dialogue and story leaves ultimately little of value when the writing is given so much importance over the gameplay, and it fails this much to boot.    … Expand

    Ok so Awards are over, so I can finally post here without the "hey, review bombing!"

    The Good - Draupnir - Sindri - Thor design - Overall variety in enemies and bosses (compared to the first game) The Bad (everything else) - Kratos is a wuss and you only see a glimpse of the God of War that he is after fighting Heimdall. Other than that, it's God of Mumbling (*hmpf* in one of    Ok so Awards are over, so I can finally post here without the "hey, review bombing!"

    The Good
    - Draupnir
    - Sindri
    - Thor design
    - Overall variety in enemies and bosses (compared to the first game)

    The Bad (everything else)
    - Kratos is a wuss and you only see a glimpse of the God of War that he is after fighting Heimdall. Other than that, it's God of Mumbling (*hmpf* in one of his best lines)
    - Disney-ish influence all over the place; childish dialogues full of gags, probably written by a 10 years old "you've been bifrosted bro!". Inside Out squirrels. inclusive Giants and other characters because hey, there cannot be a White Wakandian, but for the Sake of Gods Norse Mythology was full un Black characters.
    - Odin says "f*ck" and things like that like there's no tomorrow. Very appropriate in a GoW game.
    - Crappy enemies that go ice skating while they're far but attacking because they HAVE to hit you, or force you to block/parry.
    - Enemies that won't stagger unless they decide you can make them stagger, like...
    - ...Berserkers; they have to finish their attack patterns before you can do anything. And they're soooo boooooring.
    - Oh another Valkyrie...maybe two...no wait there's more! *sigh*
    - Some huge areas (Svartalfheim, Vanheim) and others that are just a corridor (Helheim) or wasted (Jotunheim). They're just an asset for GoW 3?
    - Crappy story, Ragnarok is something that happens in the background while you make your way though corridors killing anonymous enemies.
    - No sense of wonder whatsoever. Asgard is just a bunch of huts with a tavern nearby, and the realms in general lack structures that make you feel like you're exploring something mythological.
    - No sense of wonder fighting bosses, except maybe for Nidhogg. I want to fight things like Posedon, the colossus from GoW or the hydra from the first game, something that makes me say "oh shiii how am I supposed to take it down? but I'm the God of War!" not a bear.
    - Thor is wasted, and you can't use Mjolinr.

Unlike its predecessor, which was properly directed as a holistic experience, this game feels like a machine made up of soulless modules. Even if the goal was to safely implement a familiar experience, it could have been packaged more freshly, but this game feels like the previous DLC that lacked such effort

My only main gripe with the game is the pacing throughout the middle of the game. The pace is SLOW and can start to feel like a slog.     after playing GoW 2018 and rating it 10 this sequel was very disappointing. the handholding was so frustrating like let me figure out the puzzles by myself. the boss fights are disappointing and its titled Raganarok when in reality you only see and played against him for a short time. The cinematics are too long too.

This game was in development for over 4 years with no games released during that timeframe. There is no excuse for copy and pasted animations. It's almost as if this game was planned DLC, but the developers turned it into a full game for more money. Why does this cost more than the PS4 version? This game still uses too many masked loading screens. $70 and it doesn't utilize the strength of the PS5.

    The levels are boring and repetitive. It's as if the developers randomly added enemies into the environments and called it a day. Ubisoft Montreal can design levels better than these developers, and let me remind you that Ubisoft Montreal develop games at a faster rate. Which begs the question, why can't these developers make more frequent releases if they are just going to copy/paste and lazily design the levels? Keep in mind that this is only half of the game, meaning these lazy developers only had to do half of the work. Where is the freaking multiplayer? Sony Santa Monica are clearly too cheap and greedy to hire more developers. The physics are beyond horrible. The camera is too close. It's embarrassing that modders can give us a FOV option with ease, and these lazy developers can't even give us a simple feature. Boss fights are terrible.

    For goodness sake, why won't these developers let me skip the cutscenes in their games? Enough already. I don't want to watch a stupid movie about Norse mythology. I just want to punch monsters. It just goes to show how out of touch these developers are. I don't know anyone that cares about Norse mythology, aside bookworms. Some of us just want to go straight to the gameplay. Besides, the only people that I hear talk about stories in video games are millennials that love classic rock. I'm pretty sure the rest of us want to play the game, not watch a movie. I had the game crash on me and I was forced to watch the same boring cutscene again. This is why it's important to let us skip cutscenes. Even Naughty Dog lets me skip cutscenes. It's one thing to write a trash story, but forcing me to watch it is pathetic. I paid $70 so I should be able to skip whenever I want.

    There is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, there is literally not a reason to play this game again. Charging $70 for a game with no replay value is a cash grab. And the greedy developers had the audacity to not include the disc in the Jotnar edition, in a pathetic attempt at scamming players to buy the game twice. I know Sony is stingy with multiplayer, but not stingy enough to give me at least co-op. When I complained about the lack of multiplayer in GoT and Returnal, those developers actually listened to my complaints. They added co-op multiplayer and endless modes. Sony Santa Monica have more money than Suckerpunch and Housemarque combined. There is literally no excuse as to why these lazy cheapskates can't give me online. I paid $70 for goodness sake, I should be entitled to online multiplayer at that outrageous price. If I don't get the multiplayer, then it will only prove that these developers are too greedy and lazy, greedier than EA. I would recommend this game until it is $10 or less or just wait until it's free on PS Plus.

    Edit: After playing Callisto Protocol, I changed my mind. I'm changing my score from a 2 to a 0. Unskippable cutscenes along with boring masked loading screens is unacceptable for $70, not to mention that the things I initially praised this game for should've been in GOW 2018 in the beginning. Kratos isn't the same man that literally ripped of Medusa's head to use as a weapon. Instead Kratos is now the guy who throws his axe at things to pass simple puzzles. He's also the same guy who engages in Bengay Battles in which you have to wait for the camera to catchMore of the same.     The same game with another story. It is a copy and paste at all, they have recycled all the animations and the vast majority of the textures as well as scenarios. sun game I can't live on a new story alone, which is full of filler and parts that could perfectly be cut. It feels like certain annual sagas that all their games are the same and only the story changes.

    What did they do to God of War? The combat is like a watered-down version of the previous titles. The story and dialog are boring, which I can deal with but they decide to drag it out more and more and more. God of War is supposed to be an epic hack n slash action game where to story is just dumb fun, not this CW drama and B-tier soulborne combat

It feels like they are being pulled in different directions and didn't know how to get them both to be awesome. Also F Atreus and F playing as him.

    I dug my PS3 out of the attic to replay 2 and 3 after this game. Kratos was 2D and didn't say much, but nothing in Ragnarok was as cool as beating the **** out of Poseidon, after riding the back of a titan, then crushing his eyeballs, throwing him off the mountain causing massive flooding destruction. Why didn't they fight on the back of the snake riding around the whole world or something crazy. Nah lets fight in front of a lodge.    … Expand

    This game should have been advertised as a 30$ DLC instead of a 70$ game:
    - Minimal amount of blood and gore - Too sterile, no sex scenes etc. - Recycled animations - Same repetitive and brain-dead puzzles made for toddlers - Same repetitive and mediocre combat mechanics - Same boring single dad simulator - Boring and spongy enemies    You already played this game back in 2018.
    This game should have been advertised as a 30$ DLC instead of a 70$ game:

    - Minimal amount of blood and gore

    - Recycled animations
    - Same repetitive and brain-dead puzzles made for toddlers
    - Same repetitive and mediocre combat mechanics

    - Buggy at launch
    - Old-gen holds back it's potential
    - Feels more like a movie than an actual game
    - Extremely linear story and level design
    - Holds your hand all the way through
    - Bad pacing
    - Slightly improved graphics
    - Black-washing
    - Woke libtard soy writing

    This would probably have been more like a 3/10 if not for the following circumstances:

    - I'm sick of lazy game development and cash grabs
    - I'm sick of woke storytelling and race-swapping
    - I'm sick of micro-transaction gotcha mechanics - even though this game has none of the sort.
    - I want to counterweight the fake 10/10's

    The gaming industry is in shambles and we need to push back against this and tell the truth about new games and corrupt reviewers who shill for a review copy.

    Unfortunately, this game suffers from lackluster writing. Many moments drag on too long, while others move much too fast. 2018 had about 10 total characters present, while this one throws another 30 or so at you and doesn't give you much time to get connected to them or be invested in them. Many characters sound out of place from this world and speak with modern mannerisms that break the immersion and make you feel like you're watching a Marvel movie.
    Another big issue is the overall gameplay. The combat is great but not as great as in the Greek era. The traversal mostly has you slowly climbing up walls or crawling through tunnels as a way to hide a loading gate and have the PS4 stop processing one area and start processing the next. The puzzles are decent until your companions open their mouths and can't stop telling you exactly what to do and there is no option to turn them off. There are TONS of cutscenes in this one, and they feel more dramatic than they need to be, almost like the writers are begging you to feel the same emotion as the characters in these moments. This could have worked if the writing was tighter and more meaningful, but they decided to go with overemotional acting and sweeping music to try and make these scenes bigger than they really are. It's one of the cheapest tricks you can pull when making a movie. Maybe that's the core root of this game; it feels like an Avengers movie more than a God of War game.
    In summary, they are stepping too far away from what made God of War unique and special back in the 2000s, and instead, they are copying trends from other successful games to try and appeal to a broader audience and make more sales. You could sum up this game with single words like "vanilla", "bland", and "unoriginal."
    I don't care what happens to the franchise after this because at this point I'm done. I'm going to subscribe to PS Plus Premium so I can play the older games and reminisce how great God of War once was.
    Edit: After playing God of War 1-3 and Ascension and then trying Ragnarok again, the tone of Ragnarok is unbearable with how many characters are goofy and crack jokes. It's in stark contrast to the tone they are trying to establish in the story with violence and death, and it's disgustingly jarring.
    The story ended at 3 with Kratos killing himself to give hope to others. The Norse games are not canon.    … Expand

    Ho giocato a tutti i gow apprezzando il gameplay dei primi,nella saga norrena il combat system a mio avviso assomiglia troppo a ninja gaiden.
    Adottando una visuale di gioco troppo vicino a Kratos ho riscontrato due problemi:la perdita della visione d'insieme dell'azione e un fastidiosissimo punto cieco dove i nemici non sono visibili.
    La narrazione, seppur con un magistrale doppiaggio in italiano, è forzatamente lunga,tediosa ed ampollosa( fatto amplificato dall'impossibilità di saltare i filmati)non ha saputo coinvolgermi, l'esplorazione dei vari mondi ben caratterizzati,risulta molto guidata su binari con livelli molto lineari.

    I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

    Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.
