I haven’t finished the game yet, so this score is based on my impressions some 7 hours in.

In my experience, the best cinematic games are the ones that feels like a movie - but this game, feels like a movie that wants to be a game.

The story and acting is great, but the actual game is not very fun to play. You play mostly just to advance the story, which is probably great for some players out there, but personally, I’ll take awesome gameplay over story any day - but the freshness and amazement of the previous entry has now worn off, and so the gameplay feels somewhat lackluster and predictable.

The game is constantly split up into very cookie cutter sections, in a not so elegant way; you either have to solve a puzzle (with way too many hints), watch a cutscene, a combat scenario, traversal or a quick time event. The amount of combat sequences in-between the other elements also quickly becomes tiring, as the order usually goes; cutscene, combat, puzzle, combat, walk/boat, combat, cutscene, combat, puzzle, combat etc. The combat is somewhat decent, but is held back by the cinematic animations that often make it feel a bit stiff and clunky. The same enemies are also used way too frequently, and many of them feels as unnecessary filler. The puzzles are also pretty good at times, but after less than ten seconds a very obvious hint will be given, whether you like it or not. This kind of handholding is unbearable, and makes the puzzles way too easy. My biggest gripe though is that the PS5 version is definitely held back by the previous generation. Don’t get me wrong, it looks great, but it doesn’t look very much better than the previous entry, which is a big deal for a game where facial expressions and scenery is 40% of the experience. Also, what’s up with that stale water? When you spend most of the game sailing around, why didn’t they update these animations at least? As said, I haven’t finished it yet, and given this is a story driven game my opinion might change, but looking at it purely from a gameplay-perspective, I’d say Ragnarok plays it waaaaay too safe; so much so, that actually playing it becomes a bit tedious already. It’s a game that prioritizes story over gameplay, but if you’re into that then you’ll probably have a great time.
If you want to have game that’s actually fun to play as well though, Ragnarok definitely has its moments but they’re few and far in between.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is the new woke disappointment of the year. It focus so much on Freya and woman empowering that Kratos looks like a cameo in his own game. Theres is even a part when Freya said she would sure be able to kill Kratos to wich he dont answer! That surely a joke.

Lets not even start on the boredom of Atreus and Angrboda's time in the land of the Giants. Filler content wich takes hour and hours of playtime i nearly fall asleep. Gameplay didnt evolve enough and in the end, a good number of mens in the game dies, while not a single woman do. Hmmm.

The new Santa Monica doesnt know how to make God of War, lets hope Ragnarok is the end of the series.

Ragnarok is neither the masterpiece nor the absolute crap people are saying on the internet. It's a linear game, not open world like many claim it to be, with action, puzzles and good but reoetitive combat. Graphs and art are 10/10, impressive CGI and motion capture. Voice actors do an excellent job.
The problem is that Ragnarok follows the SONY AAA playbook. It's basically every game

The problem is that Ragnarok follows the SONY AAA playbook. It's basically every game we've played in the last decade. Took me 40 hours to beat it but I swear it felt like 100. The main story is just BORING. It trys and succeed in bulding a climax that never comes....at the and of the game I felt like I've got a good BJ but never got to cum. If you are a fan of the classic TRILOGY like me, you can sit this one out, or at least wait on a bit. It's definetley not worth the $70.

Story is quite good. Atreus still acts like a spoilt brat which is annoying and I think he should have been written a bit better. Also I don't understand why his name is Loki. Loki is the god of mischief which is Odin's son if you follow the mythological god's and this game clearly does. The combat still has many issues. You shouldn't need the red and yellow circles to know what type of evasive action you should do. It should be clear for the animation. Sometimes an enemy can hit and it blockable but then it does basically the same animation but it can't be blocked but instead evade. Also a major issue that breaks the combat completely is that you can goto use an ability and the enemies attack will start halfway through but you are stuck in animation so you can't avoid it. Why not make the enemies pause whilst your in an ability animation? I literally never use abilities because I know chances are IL loose a ton of health if I do. Why does Freya not need to say anything when using runic arrows but Atreus does? It's a bit inconsistent? Overall I think the game is a bit linear. For example climbing is locked to certain walls and you can only jump when the game says you can. It would have been great to make this a big change going into Ragnarok making the player have more freedom. Overall I just don't think they made any real big core changes to the gameplay. Everything just feels to much the same. Almost like this is more a huge DLC then a new game. Even the graphics haven't changed that much and I'm on Ps5. It's a great game but I did expect more something new to come to the table other then the story and some changes to the map.

Also the berserker gravestones bosses is a bit messed up. Some of the attacks are completely out of sync with Kratos movement causing you unavoidable damage. For example if 1 where he shouts "fall before me" whilst your releasing axe throw the time your in animation is to long and you take a heavy hit. Or how it shows you can block but if you do he just follows with a second hit but your character is stuck in flinch. I'm all for high difficulty bosses but these bosses are completely broken and your basically limited to melee only combat without skills or ability's towards the second half of the fight due to the time they take. Ramping up the speed and repeating attacks multiple times is something I would expect in a PS2 boss fight NOT a Ps5 boss fight. Why not just design new attacks. These are sidemissions so obviously they get very little attention when it comes to bug testing. I've completed all the from software games so this isn't just a hot take.
There is another one which reuses the same animation for 2 different attacks. 1 which can be blocked with a shield and another can't. When your far away from the boss and have slightly impaired site you can't always see the red circle clearly. This makes this hell for me. Who ever thought reusing an animation like that was a good idea should stay away from game development. These bosses literally have such little purpose in the game other then to drag the hours of playtime up. The Valkyries actually mean something but I don't even know what these berserkers are because it doesn't tell you? They aren't fun to do as they do the same attack over and over. They have tank health and attack windows are few and far between. If the mechanics switched up they would be fun but it's the same variety and even the same order of attacks start to finish? All it is just learn a button combination of shield, roll and attack then when his health reaches a certain point add a longer shield duration and more rolls. That's so lazy to script such basic mechanics. They couldn't even be bothered to randomise the attacks.

Overdone and overstuffed. Excessively excessive. In the previous game I was struck by how often the game would NOT have a combat encounter when you expected it to, and it gave you the space to breathe. Not so much in this game, every moment there is a line of dialogue or an enemy encounter. It is a suffocating experience. Overdone and overstuffed.

Game looks and plays very good. The story is also very good. The things i did not like is that every world and every chapter feels the same. It looks different but feels like you play the same level over and over again. It also feels like an dlc of the 2018 game then a complet new game. The game has a good combat and a nice feeling of controlling the characters.

There were a few polish things that simply were not an issue in the first game. Although its a pretty good game, I wont lie; I found this game kind of disappointing, and nowhere near as good as God of War 2018. Before I talk about my gripes with it, I will address the things I felt were good about the game.

The characters and the arcs they go through are fantastic, and the development of their values and relationships is really well written. Without getting into spoilers, the endings to Freya, Kratos and Atreus' characters were perfect and well deserved, especially Kratos who grows the most of any of the characters. The graphics are obviously amazing so I do not have to say much more about that. The new characters introduced are also pretty great, especially Thor and Odin. The side quests are surprisingly fun, and I actually enjoyed these more than the main story at times, they were like mini stories and full of history and emotion. The bosses are also pretty good, I dont remember a single one that was not fun to fight.

Now for the not so good stuff. While I wrote how I felt the characters were well handled, I think the story is not nearly as good as 2018. It feels quite underwhelming, and often feels like it does not take itself very seriously. The pacing is just not good, its far too long and we spent way too much time in very boring levels. I genuinely had to force myself to keep playing at many points in the game, and couldnt understand why the developers decided to make some of these sections so long. These drawn out sections don't contribute to anything I felt. A lot of things that happen in the story feel quite rushed and not earned, especially with the Aesir gods, who's endings were quite unsatisfying. Odin and Thor are not nearly as good of characters as Baldur. Side characters come and go, and big events happen very quickly. I do not know why, but the world felt so much more alive and huge in 2018, and that game was beautifully paced and had an incredibly satisfying ending. The combat in this also is not good, the enemies are extremely spongey, and often will kill you with no way of you predicting their attacks. I often rolled my eyes whenever i saw the 100th wave of enemies. Kratos is also extremely underpowered here, he dies so easily to enemies we know he should obliterate, but for some reason he has to hit a normal guy like 10 times with the blades of chaos to kill him. The music is also not as well utilised as the first game, I barely remember hearing it in this game. Also 2018 had far more wow moments, moments I revisit to this day because they were so awesome, I dont remember a single one in this game other than the first fight with Thor.

Overall, while this is a pretty good game and has lots of content which I may finish in the future; its a major let-down for me as the 2018 game was basically a masterpiece. I wish I could say this game was better than the first and exceeded my expectations but unfortunately it was difficult to get through at many points. Nevertheless, I think this is a fitting end to Kratos' story but I would not be opposed to seeing him in a future game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. While the game is good and has its amazing moments, it lacks in story, combat and UI. Biggest problem I had was the directionless and unfocused story. This is my biggest problem with the game.

    Characters:
Aatreus goes from wanting war to not wanting it to wanting it again for several times. While there is reason for it, the game doesnt let Aatreus sit with reason long enough to earn the change, specially when he changes his mind after short time. Biggest offender is when Brok dies, Aatreus talks about he wouldnt wanted war if this was the consequences of it, yet after creation of Ragnarok (Surtr) he start talking about how war is needed again.
Most jarring change is Sif who does complete 180 without any good reason that is told in game.
Ragnarok (Surtr) got in the way instead and Freyr died of unnecessary death bcs of it.

    Story:
Story feels all over the place. I never understood what Kratos wanted to do, felt like he was doing what everyone told him to do. Which made the game like bunch of storys mushed together.
Some parts where too long and unnecessary but other too short.

For gods sake just talk. Lot of the problem comes from charcters not talking trough it. It is cheap way to make artificial conflict.

    Combat:
Mob enemies has too much health, it just takes too long to kill them. They are also faster and stagger much less than the playable charcters.

    Companions doesnt do much.

Bosses didnt have much of spectacle like 2018 had.

    UI and the gameplay:
UI is a mess and its annoying to navigate through it. When you start your save file your placement is reset to start of mini area, while not that bad it is definitely annoying.

The exact same combos on all of Kratos weapons. including light and heavy runic attacks, recycled from GoW 2018. Where 2018 god of war had puzzles to break up the fast pace of the action, Ragnarok feels like it has puzzles to barrage you with dialogue or to fill out a 25 hour game.

The first 5 or so hours of this game were a legitimate slog to get through, I quickly realised Kratos' moves and toolkit had not been updated at all. From this point you play as Atreus, which is a slog on its own, he is agile but hits like a wet noodle and is overall not fun to handle, particularly on higher difficulty. Atreus is yet another slog to play through.

As a whole the game feels more bogged down by puzzles, the pace of the game has slowed down drastically and it is not a positive. Shortly after playing as Atreus your receive the draupnir, the weapon itself is not fun to handle at all, and once again forces you to slow down your pace of play by adding yet another mechanic that slows down the game.

Not to mention the price tag 125 AUD for what is effectively a 25 hour dlc, which could ultimately be cut down to a few hours of cutscenes. The interesting part of this game is the story and the game seems hell bent on making it as painful as possible to get to it. The graphics in this game are incredible, just a waste they didn't update anything else. Strong 7/10

"The Norse Apocalypse" is reduced to a poor family friendly thing where LITERALLY there is not a moment in the final part where you feel fear for the lives of the characters. The problem is that the game for 30+ hours brings you a "problem" that towards the end is not even mentioned, for me this thing is absurd, considering the care and maturity of the first game.

    Big disappointment.

God of war 2018 was amazing. It feels like more of the same, I should still like it but I don't. Maps are bad, design and views are meh. Enemies are just OK. NPCs are nothing special, one of the antagonist from main quest line feels like a Patison from "Twilight".
The beginning of the game is great but after that game was painful to finish.

    I still recommend.

It is a good game. The single camera is a technological genius but I think it limits the view and the scope of the actual ragnarok felt too small, as we did not see the actual destruction of ragnarok because the game needs to follow the characters for continuity.
I have not continued post completion missions maybe its there but as right now we should have seen asgard demolished in someway

There are so many cutscenes and you can not skip them. The beginning of the game I felt very bored and numerous fillers. Graphics looked just the same as the 2018 game. Lot of the areas were just reskinned. However towards the end of the game it really picked up and finished off with one of the best endings I have seen in a long time.

The game was great until its final part but unfortunately it was not worthy of a Ragnarok.
Many gods and characters did not participate in the war.
Jörmungandr participated more in 2018 than this one. Surtr and Fenrir very poorly used. We can barely see the armies fighting. The final fight against Baldur was more epic than the final fight against Thor, perhaps more epic than this

The final fight against Baldur was more epic than the final fight against Thor, perhaps more epic than this Ragnarok as a whole.
Odin did not use his eight-legged horse or other resources. It was the simplest final boss in the entire saga, nothing different happened.
The gameplay of the final part also had no surprises.
We don't use Mjölnir, we don't use the Blade of Olympus. We don't fight alongside any army.
It felt more like any level of the game.
For me until the time when Kratos plays the horn and the post-game are 10/10, but for the Ragnarok part itself I give it 5/10.

It's a shame that one of the most epic mythological events happened this way, and we can't even blame the crossgen, because GOW3 and even GOW4 were more epic. Sad.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Disappointed but still enjoyable. Too much story and dialogue. The game tries to force emotional reactions with a ridiculous amount of cut scenes which takes up about 70% of the gameplay. The semi open world ruins the immersion and is just annoying. A lot of people are bloating their reviews and ratings because of the brand that is, God of War. They made Kratos very soft and the rest of the characters were very cringe. They tried way too hard to be charismatic and tried so hard to take what they did in 2018 and double it but it just resulted in cringe moments and over done “please cry” moments that were so annoying. The back seating by NPCs is more aggravating than an itch you can’t scratch. The Atreus arcs were like torture, you spend 50% of the game as him and nothing about him was interesting or cool. The game also has this childish Disney feel to it which stands against the legacy of the franchise. It’s supposed to be a serious game with serious consequences but it has these really cringey teenage soap opera moments that are such a drag and painful to have to sit through. Thor is also some drunk alcoholic with daddy issues and it makes him look so incredibly weak.

The world is empty, and you will find yourself begging for an enemy to show up so you can actually fight and do the most important thing in the game that clearly isn’t the main focus.

Overrated game and not a game of the year candidate in my opinion. The combat mechanics and boss fights were the only reason I gave this game a 7. I liked the combat in 2018 a lot and I like how they essentially took the foundation of 2018 and enhanced all of it and added a third weapon. The mechanics were great but I didn’t like how in GMGOW or No mercy difficulty the way they’d make the game more challenging was by making enemies out of the strongest steel in the universe and the ability for the weakest of the enemies to one shot you. 50% of the game is spent holding up or down to climb or wall shimmy, which is so over the top. In terms of villains I thought Heimdall was the best. He fits the theme and vibe of a true god of war game and I really loved fighting him.

Too many cut scenes, not enough actual gameplay. Climbing walls and holding up for hours is not gameplay.

On top of that there are a lot of mechanics in their game that you interact with through the menus, so you better memorize this mess. Combat overall feels better than the first with more balance between each weapon. Boss fights are also greatly improved in this game which is much appreciated. However there is still a lot reused. I was fine with it for the first half, but when I found my sixth Ancient/soul eater I got fed up a bit. There is a lot to love about God of War Ragnarok, but there are enough shortcomings to prevent me from loving this game as much as the previous one. Besides never bigger open world to explore and amazing graphics and world building, there are a lot flaws that make God of war Ragnarok look like a DLC for the original God of War 4.

    - Gameplay includes cover to cover same mechanics from God of war 4.

    - Although the world a lot bigger and it offers a lot to explore, from various boss fights to simple and boring side quests that are also called "Favours". There are side quests to keep you interested, but most of the "Dead spirit" side quests are just utterly boring and not rewarding at all.

    - Enemy variety suffered as a consequence of the big open world which can get at times very repetitive and boring.

    - Finishing moves do not have that same rewarding feeling you had in the previous game due to lack of Gore and them experimenting with finishing moves that include both playable character and companion. You don't feel the anger and strength of the Ghost of Sparta when performing finishers which was present in previous game, even God of War 4.

    - Story and character development is very bad. Although it's backed up by amazing worlds, great graphics and characters we love, it is filled with cheesy dialog, decisions that get overwritten in the next sequence and trying to make all the secondary characters protagonists. The story gets so messed up in the end that you are left with thousands of those questions "Why would he do that?". It's not realistic and it looks like teen tv show.

It is a good game, definitely worth experiencing, but it's not perfect nor nearly close to what God of War 4 was.

God of war 4 had that intimacy, tension and atmosphere. Every moment was epic, a lot of lore to discover and the decisions that characters made had an impact and weight.

Many elements feel like they were added last minute or something bigger was scrapped, like with Jormungandr, the mask, Fenrir, the giants, etc. The game does however have great visuals, audio, voice acting and characters. The environments are very linear, can be explored in a "hold you right hand to the wall" model, and often offer too many hints too early to actually motivate you to explore and find solutions to puzzles. There is too much exposition. The game does do a great job of introducing a new generation of characters and storylines, and in some ways Kratos' sluggishness is most notice-able when being aided by his younger partners. The game feels much less open world than 2018, and there is a palpable lack of freedom. Perhaps the only truly novel thing here is the barrage of accessibility options, many of which are on by default, and kind of provide so much aid as to make you feel like you don't need to think much. The game makes some solid improvements compared to 2018, but the landscape of games in terms of fluidity and open-ness have changed so much in the intervening years that this sequel feels still behind.

Like GoW 2018, production value and story are top notch but the combat holding it all together is functional but gets stale quickly due to lack of options for player expression. This game may be good for a first play through because of the initial impressions, but the game is not inviting to play multiple times because of the boring and tiring parts with Atreus. The story left much to be desired with simplistic explanations and lack of explanations for other parts of the story. The potential of Ragnarok was thrown away, where did they put the gods in the game? We only faced three and even then we only killed one, the fight against Thor and Odin together did not cause the same destruction as the fight against Baudur in the first game, which is incomprehensible in my point of view. They left Kratos' future open because they did not leave him with motivation to move forward, he became the king of the 8 realms, but what comes after? We want the god killer back. Very good game overall but doesn't have the same punch as the 2018 reboot does.

Many of the mechanics are the same from GoW 2018. I played the first game in October, so maybe I have strong recency bias, but everything lost its freshness. For combat, you start out with the two weapons you finish the story with from 2018, and you gain one during your playthrough about halfway through.

For combat, you start out with the two weapons you finish the story with from 2018, and you gain one during your playthrough about halfway through. The third weapon is a nice change, and I actually used it most of the rest of the game, since I was getting bored of the two weapons you used for the past 2 games. Runic attacks are completely uninspired, and I believe they are all the same from the first game, so for much of the game, you're performing the same moves as you did in GoW 2018. Enemies are basically rinse and repeat from GoW 2018, since they reuse many of the same realms. I found this uninspired. There are a few welcome differences in the combat, but I found it extremeley stale when comparing to GoW 2018.

The story and writing are terrific as expected and the game is really pretty.

I've written more negative than good in this review, but I'll give it a mixed score, since I still found it really fun and a great playthrough even with all of its flaws. I think the "movie" part of this game is a 10/10, and the gameplay is a 6/10. I personally value gameplay over story, so that's why it doesn't average out fully for me.

    + Interesting hub worlds

    Cons:
    - Story falls apart in second half
    - I want to play the game, not watch cutscenes for 90% of a quest and then play for the remaining 10%
    - Lack of fists combat (my favorite skill tree in GoW 2018)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. God of War Ragnarok was a game that completely sold me in the beginning but later lost me a bit towards the end. The whole game felt like trying to cram in every story element meant for 3 games into one game. As the game progressed, it was rushed and came to an unsatisfying conclusion to the Norse saga.

While outstanding, the gameplay is still almost the same as the 2018 version, and although the devs mentioned that they will keep the same engine, it would've been nice with upgraded gimmicks of puzzles, attacks, etc. However, the gameplay is not much of an issue since the gameplay for God of War 2018 was good, and bringing something good into another thing remains the same.

The most important reason why I gave my score is because of the story. For a game adapted from Norse mythology, the story is very small and lacks the variety of the original myth and the number of characters. We only see a handful of Norse gods and we get to fight only three of them. The Ragnarok event is also underwhelming. Although the story gives a reasonable excuse as to why it ended so quickly, it could have stretched out the literal war against the Aesir. If the game took some of the minutes given to Iron Wood and put them into Ragnarok, it could've saved it from being this underwhelming.

In conclusion, while the game aspect of God of War Ragnarok was great, the story and the pacing really made the experience very mediocre. With the lack of pacing and good storytelling, this game makes the Norse saga as a whole more of a long DLC of 2018 than anything. I would've greatly preferred this saga be a trilogy than a duology and I expect this series to do so in the next saga.

It´s also over the top and grand like the greek games, which is not what I wanted for the norse games, but it was inevitable and it was very well handled, especially the character foils. Kratos´s and Freya´s character arcs aren´t great. The latter is too generic and fast paced, the former is messy at worst and did something pretty outrageous considering what went on the first game and who he is. Gameplay isn´t much of an improvement on 2018, the enemy variety is the one thing that prevents it from being boring for someone who played a lot of the last game. It feels more like dlc combat and not sequel combat. Expand

The battle experience is way better than the last game while the storyline still seems a bit cheesy and annoying to me. And there are just too many things to collect if you want to get the platinum trophy.

This game had more enemy variety which is good, the combat is still great , the graphics are great, the story pacing is all over the place. Some things take way too long (Iron woods) and some things are just way too short (Ragnarok) I am tired of this "gameplay sections" were you are just holding the stick up and moving slowly. They are just glorified cut scenes... and you can't skip them!

I adored the "first" God of War game released on the PS4. I was praying that this game would be my GOTY when it eventually came out. This has to be part of the reason why I was pretty disappointed when the game was released. The game I envisioned and the game that came out were two very different things, in gameplay and narrative. I completed the game in two sittings, which I entirely expected to. The first section of the narrative was everything I dreamed of, a clash I had waited years for, seeing characters only ever mentioned in the first game. That is why I was so disappointed when it came to the rest of the game. I entirely expected this to be the second entry in a trilogy of games, but it feels like they kneecapped their narrative with a rushed ending that felt entirely unearned, at least to me. I really wanted this game to be a 10/10, but personally, it let me down. Just not the game or narrative for me. Expand

Nice graphics but I can't see any of the Norse gods as godly. Boss fights were underwhelming and the mobs were generic. It felt like they relied on fan baiting with bad designs and contradicting as many of the Norse legends as possible to boost a by the numbers movie game.

For being a sequel this doesn't bring anything too newto the table,it's a pot of the same from the first game and like the irst game it has nothing to do with God of war at all,the combat and the characters has anything to do with the original game, the only thing that link with the original franchise it's the character Kratos but unfortunately it's only the name, the character overall it's a total diferente character doing things that it's pretty uncharacteristic for the Kratos character.

The game has a very good combat system, doesn't add nothing too new to the game,it feels more like an expansion that a sequel but unfortunately the very slow paced story makes with walk and watch characters speak most of the time with some pretty boring and cliche dialog instead of showing more of the story through gameplay.

I really think if this game wasn't called "God of war" it could been a way better game with some interesting story, but since it try so hard to keep the franchise name to attract more public it end up with a mediocre story that ends up interrupting a lot the good gameplay

The UX design is ABSOLUTELY the number 1 reason this didn't win game of the year.

Guys, when you release this for PC can you please sort out the UX design. Also, the menu system and the excessive stats and upgrades could do with being reworked. This game is so damn confusing in that department.

Only 3 weapons, enemies are reused and the variety is again very small, barely any big boss fights again which everyone loved from the old games.
And the cherry on the cake, the characters and dialogues.
I mean....wtf??? I dislike every single character in this game, except maybe Mimir. Everyone is touching everyone with velvet gloves, apologizing constantly for everything and everyone is a loser in some way. It feels like a big therapy group and everyone is making sure not to trigger the others, a pathetic showcase of gods, giants and badasses!
They even treat the player like a little kid with the constent comments they make.
It makes me so sad, that it seems to be so easy these days to make "a masterpiece", but this, this is NOT a masterpiece, at all!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is this a good game? Sure, it is fun and the story is good in parts. Is it a good follow up to 2018 GoW? Hardly. It is closer to Uncharted 4 than GoW 2018.

While 2018 GoW was not a very "open world", this feels like a game on rails the entire time. They went so far as to throw up asinine & arbitrary barriers in many places you've already been to when you try to revisit earlier areas.

The combat is a bit deeper, however the actual encounters are mostly much worse, especially for trash mobs. Whereas Souls games use creative combat and good skill sets to make even the trash challenging to defeat, GoW:R went with the "more health, more mitigation, more damage" route, and that's it. Kratos is no god in GoW:R. He's barely able to take 2 hits from trash mobs on the hardest difficulty b/c that's all they could come up with for difficulty.

In 2018, the story moved along with a very good pace without too many distractions. GoW:R constantly flips between Kratos/Atreus, Atreus/X, Kratos/Freya, Atreus/Y, Atreus/Z, just non-stop. The work you've done over the last 4 hours feels undone as you move from 1 setting to another, and the pace of the story goes from a gallop back to a trot as it tries to orientate you to the new chapter/character combo.

    Various other complaints:

    1. Way too much backtracking
    2. Lots of broken AI with mobs and your teammates sitting there doing nothing very often. Many difficult fights just break and the mobs sit there until you kill them (2 trolls did this, werewolves do this very often as well)
    3. Inappropriate jokes. Why is a Seinfeld joke in a GoW game?
    4. Unnecessary cuckolding of Atreus by Thrud with modern "sensibilities" feeling incredibly out of place
    5. No planning allowed for any encounters. Nearly everything spawns out of nowhere. This is a cheap trick to make the game last longer and nothing more.
    6. Several 1 ways that make no sense at all
    7. Another Playstation game that vastly overpads the game time by putting in far too much climbing. Do PS fanboys really enjoy this? It adds nothing to the game but annoyance and time. It isn't interesting or challenging like Breath of the Wild, a 5+ year old game on a much less advanced system.

Again, not a horrible game, just not nearly up to the same standards that GoW 2018 set. Anyone talking about this for "Game of the Year" is blinded by bias or paid off by Sony.

    Beautiful graphics
    Cool armour sets
Odin - love every second he was on screen
Thor - just like Odin, big screen presence
    Sindri and Brok

    Cons:
Too much backtracking over huge expanses/corridors for mindless collectibles and uninspired side quests
Mimir - STFU (especially each time I collect those stupid "Pond" elements and during combat)
    Freya - STFU
    Atreus - STFU
    Angrboda - Annoying character
Combat - feels floaty, no damage feedback (half the time I had no idea I was taking damage), feels spammy
Story - being a completionist and doing my best to grind through all the collectibles made me lose interest in an already weak and uninspiring story. Just not invested enough in the story due to Mimir, Freya, Atreus all being absolutely annoying.
Enemies - Annoying to fight against. Which ones? ALL OF THEM!!
    Useless map
    Cluttered UI/ menu system
    Stupid, irritating, irrelevant puzzles
    Annoying purple arrow bubble nonsense

Overall, a supremely disappointing sequel which started out wow-ing me but by the end, ended up frustrating and annoying me beyond measure.

God of War 2018 was a masterpiece because of its simplicity.

Simply said fighting heavy, unresponsive and unnecessary cumbersome /artificial difficult which slows down enemy engagement. Weapons don't have weight, lock on is bad, you constantly get attacked from enemies out of view, the enemies do not flinch - The Draugr / boss encounters being the worst offender for enemy health, damage and arena and (mini-)boss design and layout. Even standard enemies feel "spongey" and damage you receive seems way over-tuned, leaving you in defense / reaction mode most of the times (at least above normal difficulty; haven't tested below).

When I think about it, the gameplay is somewhat reminiscent of Dark Souls but in a bad way, as the latter has not that many unblockable attacks and encounters feel better designed (thus feeling better IMO). Bottom line, from a gameplay-perspective, the mechanics are not as sophisticated to stand on their own and, thus, are not on par with other hack-n-slay-games, e.g., DMC, Bayonetta or even old GOW, as well as DS, though this may be intentional. IMO this game feels frustrating for the wrong reasons.

Further aspects relevant to the (lowered) score, in short: The game crashes on PS5; the performance (FPS) is not great / stable unless on performance mode which does impact quality a great deal; the map design is visually great but gameplay-wise repetitive; the gameplay basically hasn't changed much / at all from GoW 2018, which is probably due to the same weapons, I wanted God of War but this has too much (God of) Junior in it, while Kratos doesn't feel powerful at all.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]
