Pros: The main story keeps you guessing, and side quests are entertaining. There is a lot of collecting to do.
A lot of decent boss fights
Cool new weapons and creative directions
The art and graphics are amazing

    Cons:
Combat is pretty much the same as GoW (2018)
    Combat gets old quick
A lot of reused animations and character models from GoW (2018)
Some creative parts overstay their welcome

The game got old quick in my opinion, but I also played GoW (2018) right before playing Ragnarok so I was pretty tired of the same repetitive combat. There were parts of the game that felt like GoW and there would be hours where I would forget I was even playing a GoW game and would think I was playing something different.

Overall the game is good, and I praise Santa Monica Studios for all their effort. Hopefully, they switch up the combat, animations, and environment next go around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. God of War Ragnarok is a good game not great. I beat it 28 hours with some side quests done and my gear around level 7. I would consider the 2018 a 10/10. This misses the mark just a little. First off I didn’t need any of the moments you play as Atreus. He is under powered and just annoying to play as. I bought this game to play as “God of War” not his prepubescent son. He felt under powered even after I maxed out his bow and gear. 2nd other thing that marked it down for me was the story. It’s not that clear what you’re doing or why. Kratos is just trying to protect his son and Atreus is doing whatever. Not like in 2018 where it is a story of a father trying to connect with his son on this journey to honor their wife and mothers death while teaching his son about life. Then the macguffin of the mask in the game turns out to be nothing and it just disappears. Last the fight of Ragnarok was weak and how the fight with Thor ended with Odin killing him sucked. My advice is to play the 2018 and if you want to know what happens next, play this - just realize it has its limitations and weaknesses. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game started strong with a lot of action, Freya trying to kill us, Thor and Odin entering our home, and Thor starting a fight. But then the story begins to get less interesting. Especially mid-story. Overall it’s a good game, but it could’ve been perfect if they had more boss fights, well thought out story, and a lot more action than just going to different realms killing repetitive enemies. Pretty disappointed by the plot in several points, most of all about Giants (giants in the marbles guys? Seriously?!) and Ragnarok's very last part (boss fights with Thor and Odin are great, but plot wise I didn't like the twist). All in all an outstanding game anyway

But we could have had so much more. Many plot points from the previous game are left ignored and the final few boss fights were some of the simplest in the franchise. I felt underwhelmed by the final act as it left too much on the table. Expand

    6. The game itself plays it kind of safe and Ragnarok itself is underwhelming.

Other than that, it is a solid game and a good sequel which deserves all the awards it did win at the Game Awards and is still worth your time if you were a fan of GOW 2018.

Combat Combat is good as well but I realized that developers removed some necessary combat moves. For example there were lots of runic attacks in Gow 4 but there are less runic attacks in Ragnarok. But that is not a big problem.

    Mechanics-Weapons
Mechanics are nice as well,as I expected, there is nothing to talk about.

Boss fights Boss fight quality is an important thing in games.İn Gow Ragnarok, there are just a few good boss fights(Thor Heimdall and Odin).Other ones are awful and reskinned bosses. Also they are not hard at all.

Areas In Gow Ragnarok, you can discover all 8 realms and there is much content in all realms. The problem is that there are lots of boring areas.Especially Vanaheim.Vanaheim is basically a big forest with some Dragurs and exotic enemies.Midgard, was the best realm in Gow 4 but in Ragnarok,it is just a common area with some **** quests. Also Muspelheim is disappointing,I expected better challenges but all challenges are similar and it doesn't reward you for completing it %100.Asgard is a main game realm,so I will not talk about it.
Alfheim is nice, and it is better than Midgard, which surprises me the most,it is not a boring realm.Niflheim is a main game realm,so there is not too much to talk about.Helheim is worse than I expected,Gow 4 helheim was definitely better, and Svarthalfheim is meh,not very good but not very bad.

Other Cinematics are really long.Especially there is a part where you play as Atreus and travel with Angrboda,it is full of boring cinematics.Weapons are good, new weapon,Draupnir spear is a really nice weapon.

    Things I liked about game

Exploration is nice, graphics are nice, weapons are nice, characters and story are nice, some bosses are nice and ost is nice.

The UX design is ABSOLUTELY the number 1 reason this didn't win game of the year.

A good game but it feels clunky and audio is subpar and not anywhere near as good as the previous game. Hitting enemies so they hover in the air waiting for your next hit felt great in GoW but in GoW:R it actually feels like they hover and wait for you to hit them. Smashing a tree in two sounds like a matchstick breaking and this lack of oomph in the audio is widespread - again unlike GoW.

Telltale sign of bad writing: main character (atreus) makes every wrong decision, but plot armour and dues ex machina end up making most of his decisions the right one in the end. The story was unbearably slow in parts (mostly Atreus parts) while the characterization of certain gods felt strange. It was more boring than a GoW game should be. It even felt like more of a walking simulator than the first game. Room -> fight -> squeeze thru a crack in the wall -> walking while talking -> another crack -> another fight. Rinse and repeat.

COMBAT - From a combat-side, it's actually quite bad. I recommend playing on a low difficulty as the combat is unfair and poorly designed in multiple occasions. Fighting wave after wave of monster sometimes is boring, runic attacks are horrible, positioning is irrelevant as enemies will slide towards you while attacking, in general it's very much not rewarding to master, it's probably worst than the first game.

STORY - It's worst than the first game as it expands tremendously moving away from the laser focus of the original. Characters like Mimir and Freya and Kratos himself are actually very much humanized taking away from them the aura of legends they used to have. Freya in particular is written very bad in my opinion, and everyone tolerating her **** actually pisses me off. The main villain of the story, however, is very well made (and acted). The finale was very satisfying in my opinion, despite laking that "larger than life" feel that I would expect from a God Of War.

I don't know. Technically it is a Superior game. Crazy how polished and detailed it is.
But the gameplay didn't really make a step forward. A few more moves, but that's it. The mechanics are good and work, but could need a little more "impact", "power". I don't feel like a god of war, and yes, he becomes Old, but i don't feel that either.

The story part of atreus early in the game is a sick joke. The son of the god of war in a disney adventure acting like a spoiled kid...no, and way too cringe.

    - A bit flat and cheesy dialogue from time to time
    - Bit boring design on some of the characters, very cringed and flat american design.

Attempts too much and delivers far too little. A lot of the story seems unnecessary or unoriginal (like Brok dying; it was like an Assassin's Creed game all of a sudden, where death is the only thing that inspires vengeance in the player), and important moments are solved off-screen in five minutes (like the unification of Alfheim or the recruitment of Hel's army). Nowhere near enough character development to justify Sif suddenly being a good guy on her fifth line of dialogue in the game right at the very end. Plot armour is apparent and obvious and is not cleverly hidden from view like you'd expect.

Core gameplay is fine, but lacks the excitement of being novel. The focused triumph of GOW 2018 has been replaced by a rushed game that should have been chopped in two to allow greater exploration of themes and characters. Seminal moments are reduced to backdrops and 'What was the point of that' moments. Large pieces of the game can be removed and nothing changes from the game's resolution. Garm/Fenrir and the creation of the Jormungandr can be removed from the game and nothing about Ragnarok changes.

Rather than wax lyrical about all the game's contradictions I will simply say; what a disappointment. It fails to deliver and is a sprawling mess that can't decide what it wants to be and what it wants to be about.

magine buying a $200 plastic hammer in the hype and getting it for this. Oof.

To date I'm not sure I've ever played a game that has felt as much like a movie as these two. The single shot camera following without ever cutting has a lot to do with that, as does the character design and exploration.

Unfortunately said character exploration here, and the greater story at large, is frequently and on the whole awful. This is perhaps as textbook a case as I can think of of plot leading the characters, wherein the characters frequently make absurd and frustrating decisions simply to move the gameplay from one phase to the next. The central plot all told is fairly meaningless and difficult to believe from basically anyone's standpoint except Odin, but that too broke down when interacting w/ the rest of the gang. I frequently found myself shaking my head in disbelief and just waiting to move on hoping the story would get better, but it only got worse. The dialogue is also stilted and very poorly paced with long, long pauses in between lines for no apparent reason.

The climax is rather anti-climactic, and the final stage feels rushed and not to the scale of epicness the series has often drawn in the past. The level design is also pretty drab and repetitive, such that it doesn't really seem all that rewarding to explore some of the hidden areas, and most of what you're doing is just plugging along in the obvious direction you're being pushed.

These elements would probably not feel as bad if it weren't for the aforementioned cinematic quality the game does so well, but if you're going to make it feel like a movie, the story and design need to hold to such standards, and this does not (at least not a good one).

But it's still fun because of the great combat, and some intermediate moments of pathos for our heros. I'm not particularly eager for the spin-off they seem to setup, but maybe they can improve the story enough to make that more engaging.

By the time it was done, I was over it, despite them feeling epic and grand... the fustration was just too much because of the bad balancing.

The game also features backtracking very heavily, in both the story and the sidequests.. lazy and shortcuty imo.

Axe weapon doesn't feel fun to play, very clunky and slow in terms of combat mechanics when you compare it to the pacing and speed of the bosses and enemy attacks.

Story was great up until the final chapter, no spoilers so i won't go further but it felt like the writers ran out of time so they tried to wrap it up very quickly.

Game of the year.... sure why not, it has the qualities of it compared to other titles released in 2022, but it's by no means perfect.

    pros

    - the game looks wow just wow the engine Santa Monica use for their games is just beautiful

    - the combat is a loooot better than the previous game

    - the music is just next level

    - map design although taken lot from the previous game is still pretty good

    - some of the designs for the Nordic gods is just perfect like Thor

    - really liked the standalone gameplay with Atreus he is to cool to play with

    - the boss battles in this game are a huge improvement over the previous one

    - they finally removed the useless side quests they added in the first game and just did 1 big side quest to every map which is just THANK YOU

    cons (oh boy)

    - writing is just trash i mean the beginning was 10 out of 10 don't get me wrong but after that the game just slows down and feels like a chore to play but back to the writing why is every encounter with the gods ends up in lets talk even the game sometimes contradicts itself by making Kratos or Atreus speak mid boss fight and even the boss will just straight up yell shut the f up why is there no bad guys ? the game tries so hard to show us the players every gods point of view and shows us that there are no bad guys just to shift the whole point they tired to prove at the end.
as you can see i could talk about the Disney like writing of this game for hours just because of how ridiculous and childish everything was

    - a lot of re used assets and enemies , felt like i was playing the expansion of the first (2018) game

    - when i said most of the Nordic god designs are good i especially said most because there are some that are just what the actual f is this this is not how this god looks why is that they nailed the designs in god of war 3 of the Greek pantheon but couldn't do it now ?

    - the maps feel small and don't really represent the realms in their scale at least in my opinion every realm has 2 3 small maps that combine and that's it really felt like im doing small dungeons and not exploring realms

    - ending had me feeling confused and weirded out no continuation no nothing just ok that's it bye
    with no proper send off

    - they finally gave us a third weapon but it felt like i could use more just feels weird to have only 3 weapons in a god of war game

in conclusion as i recognize with a lot of triple A games the gameplay is fun and cool but the writing is not good at all game felt like small messy expansion to the already decent with potential game that was god of war 2018 and that's why my final score to this game is a 7.5 out of 10 i would recommend it to new comers to the series or to people that want a game to pass the time but for people who played the og series as i said in my review of the previous game GOD OF WAR RAGNAROK doesn't scale up to the standards that the originals build up to

    The bad:
Very short drawing distance and supported by excessive blur and fog on the sides of the characters and close-ups. Companions and allies never shut up (talk and talk and talk more and you move forward and keep talking). The recycling of textures, effects and modeling of the 2018 game is noticeable. Advance on the map to inconsequential areas and moments. Fog in the background to cover lack and slow loads of objects and textures. Very continuous with respect to the 2018 game. Uninspired enemies. It seems more like a DLC for God of War 2018. Excess of in-game cinematics of characters and faces talking and talking. They are all the time giving the rattle with the theme of Ragnarok but as there is no countdown or indication of progress, it only remains as a curious anecdote. That I don't want to play with Atreus I don't care who he is, or who he is going to be or who he pretends to be. 10 USD extra pay to update the version to new generation, really?

    The Meh!:
That yes, indeed, Kratos is brutal (but he does not recover the quality quotas of the first 3 canonical games) but his game is not the revolution that they promised and it only remained as a simplistic continuation. When he backs up, Kratos doesn't turn or look at the camera, he just walks backwards with his back turned which gives the impression that the modeling is a faceless back to save textures. Very rushed game that can give about 10-15 hours as an interactive movie and a lot of repetition (they don't get tired of talking). His enemies are uninspired especially that golem **** Lots of teasing and hee hee ha ha with Craig The Brute and it comes out here too, but there's no value in making jokes or memes about that enemy and his pitiful modeling

Example you have a special skill that lets you shoot a fireball, you have a puzzle that requires you to light up a candle from a distance. My first thought was ok i have this new fire ball skill maybe i can just shoot the fire ball to light it up, nope doesnt even effect the candle even with a direct hit, instead you need to use the magic arrows to light a path around wall and you have to perform a specific chain bomb skill to complete the puzzle. This type of gameplay is so outdated and frustrating.

The story is unsatisfying. The start of it is great but it gets worse the more you play, with all the forced female empowerment moments, all the cringy new characters that you don't care about getting so much screen time and development. Kratos gets completely neutered in this story, its not enough that he doesn't want to fight anymore but now he takes order from the worst character in this series (Freya) with her stupid motivations. Odin and Thor were great but we didn't get enough from them, Odin's motivations were fantastic and i actually was rooting for him to succeed because i wanted to know the answers to his questions but no we get a ton a build up and they seemingly drop the most interesting part of the story. Kratos and Atreus carry the game with their performances but that can only get you so far, by the end i didn't care anymore because everything else was just so frustrating.

Combat is mostly the same, meaning it's fun when you're up to 2-3 enemies, but when there are 4-5, you often get screwed by camera and clunky controls. Also is seems Kratos and his son prepared so hard for Ragnarok, that they had lost all the weapons/armors and forgot all skills, sic!.

P.S. Dear Santa Monica Studio, I hate you for these berserker fights!

I wanted to play god of war sequel not a marvel movie. The game is excellent, but I'm extremely disappointed in the direction taken by the narrative. I think the decision to change game director for a direct sequel was really bad.

Just finished the game. I very much enjoyed it, however I am a bit disappointed. I understand that my expectations might have been unrealistic, but the sequel being next gen really raised the bar for me. To me ragnarock felt more like DLC to me than a sequel. The combat is marginally better with a few tweaks and changes. My fear of it being playable on last gen came to fruition.Just finished the game. Developing a game for old hardware limits the games possibilities. Still a great game, just not the home run game of the year like I hoped for. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although the game maintains its excellent gameplay from the previous game by making small changes, it maintains the same good graphics as the previous game, I feel that the difficulty went down a bit, I feel that the narrative also went down a bit, leaving many characters in the dark and downplaying some (Jörmungandr, Odin, Thor, Hraesvelgr, Loki, Forseti, Tyr, etc) I feel that although the fights with the Berserkers are quite entertaining and apply that level of difficulty that the story lacks, they leave a lot to be desired. to be desired compared to the Valkyries, I also feel that the Physical Appearance of some Gods like Odin and Heimdall leave a lot to be desired, as well as the fight with Thor and Freya, which are not the most epic that one would expect. Although I liked the game a lot despite the fact that Platinum was very easy, I feel that Cory Barlog set the bar so high with the previous game (God of War 2018), that it was impossible to fail with this game no matter how bad or good it was. outside. God of War Ragnarok is a good game, but like GoW 2018 is NOT a perfect game and is unfortunately criminally overrated. As much as that fact angers Sony blowhards and paid critics, God of War Ragnarok is a decent game with both strengths and weaknesses. As a first party Sony exclusive, the graphics are fantastic on PS5, with both graphics and performance modes looking great. As much as that fact angers Sony blowhards and paid critics, God of War Ragnarok is a decent game with both strengths and weaknesses. As a first party Sony exclusive, the graphics are fantastic on PS5, with both graphics and performance modes looking great. The writing also sees improvement from the first game, with witty dialogue getting a chuckle from me every now and then. However, just as the first game, the puzzles are monotonous and repetitive with very little variety beyond "freeze the water" or "throw the axe" . As far as the combat goes, nothing has changed since the first game. The combat is just as convoluted, with far too many forgettable skills, runes, etc. The locked camera is still asinine and is incredibly aggravating when I'm trying to pick up a health-stone and I have to fight the camera to let me pick it up. There is also incredibly inconsistent difficulty, why are the regular enemies able to deliver boss level attacks that take half my health? It gets to the point where I've died more to an enemy hoard than to the actual bosses, especially since there can be 3-4 enemies attacking you at once. The bosses have improved from the first game, with more variety, however, who needs bosses when one regular enemy can kill you in two hits. The story has improved since the first game, with a special attention to the characters, however, most of the Atreus sections feel like filler, especially the berry picking mission. This game feels like it's been stretched thin to fill an arbitrary 30 hour campaign length. Overall, God of War Ragnarok is a good game, but nowhere near the heights of a 10/10 game that paid game critics and Sony blowhards would say it is. Expand

In contrast this game is lacking. The story does little to keep you going, and the world is a chore to get though, by the end you’re just fighting enemies that are sponges… I assume a way to drag out the end. It’s a chore. Everything else is fine but the pacing and Atreus.

I found it disappointing. The graphics are there, some of the performances (Odin and Thor especially) are great, and the combat is just as good. It was unfocused, very unlike the simple but well-crafted story of the first game. Some characters are introduced once or twice and I’m supposed to care about them—I just don’t. Too many moments were unearned. It would have been better if the story focused more on a few characters, particularly Thor and Odin, instead of getting sidetracked so much.

Ironically, getting sidetracked is actually where I thought the game worked best. The best parts of the game were in the large side quest areas like on vanaheim, when it could be just a game and not a story-game. It excels at that, but it left me disappointed because God of War (2018) was one of the best combinations of story *and* game I’ve ever experienced.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A Half the game is great the other half is meh or just unlikable. The combat is still top notch. Everything feels smooth the graphics look even better this time around after just completing the original reboot. That said most of the story is middling at best. The new main antagonists are just not that great. Odin is some frail old dude who while smart in some aspects get completely out played at almost every turn and is not nearly as intimidating as his dead son Baldur. Thor is a cry baby who is incapable of making his own decisions and is constantly just get told what to do by everyone around him. He literally takes orders from everyone from his dad, to his wife, his daughter, atreus, and Kratos. Atreus is completely different from the confident partner he became in the first game. Arguing at every turn the whole game is basically about following his wishes while also trying to stop him from wrecking the 9 realms. Freya cries, like Alot. Almost everytime she's with you she's crying about how hard her life is like you don't have your own problems. There's also only really 1 OMG moment the whole game. Everything seems just interesting enough to not quit but never "oh my God that's awesome". Spoilers*** You never get Mojlnir. Thors legendary hammer that's talked about the entire first game, the hammer teased at the end, and the hammer included in the special edition. Yeah, almost never in the game except to know down some walls and iceicles. I guess I wanted something more and with no real big scenes other than the finale I was left under whelmed. Is definitely fun for the combat but if you're expecting something as interesting as the original, I don't think it happened Expand

I think the real goty of 2018 was red dead

Opinions are my own. This game is solid, but I don't feel like it's 9/10 or perfect score solid. If it ain't broke, why fix it? This formula is solid and works well. They built on the first game but missing anything amazing that would take this over the edge. It's very much the same GoW game with some extra features

Gameplay is largely the same. The gameplay and controls are so smooth and engaging that it’s still just as satisfying as it was the first time, especially in regard to the combat. Something that I found a bit disappointing was that they recycled all execution animations for enemies that were in the first game, it truly felt a little lazy. I loved trying to do all the executions in the first game to see how brutal they were, but you really have seen a large portion of before before you even boot the game up. What really bothered me about the game is the very poor flow between combat, story, and puzzles. Especially because the “puzzles” are even more low effort than the first game. Now the vast majority of the puzzles are just a scavenger hunt, they don’t really require much logic, but the solution is most often something you have to hit that is hidden behind something else. After a few hours, those become so cumbersome and pull away from the flow of the game, even if they are easy. The other part of the flow that bothered me were all of the segments where you have to play as Atreus. At first, it was a neat little change of gears, but after the fourth sequence, I just want to rush through those parts. His play style is cool at first, but his recycled moves at even more blatant than Kratos. It takes away so much from the flow of the game that every single section where you play as Atreus felt like a chore, and there are a ton of Atreus sections.

I also found the story and characters to be far less interesting this time around. When you started the first game, you knew the plot, and while it was simple, you had it in the back of your mind the entire time. Now you have to play through the teenage angst undertone for 5 hours before you even know the overarching story. It’s awful. Luckily it does open up down the road and become pretty good over halfway through, but I cannot forget how stupid it was for such a long time. Some of the character development is pretty cool, but it really broke the spirit of who the characters are. Then somehow they made characters with massive potential like Odin and Thor so painfully uninteresting, and then they added tons of side characters that feel like they’re from an MTV fantasy show. It just feels very disorganized. Despite all these complaints, it’s still a good game. But it lacks the magic from the first game. This feels more like a massive DLC than it does a sequel. I enjoyed it as it’s own experience, glad I played it, but it didn’t do its justice as a sequel to such a major game.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
