While I loved the first God of War, the sequel doesn't quite measure up. The graphics, acting and score are 10/10, the integration of the story and engine is perfect, but the story feels hurried, as if the game shipped with a middle segment cut out. I can identify the moment when things went downhill for me - it's the beginning of the final arc, helpfully pre-announced by characters pointing out that this might be the last chance to do something.

Up until that moment, the sense of wonder, exploration and a compelling story with nuanced characters was almost flawless.

Afterwards, we see quite a bit deus ex mahina moments and unmotivated behavior by characters, for example a pointless giant battle that lacks setup and, quite frankly, motivation for the characters.

It felt a bit like a let-down, following the tear-inducing and touching end of the first game, as if the directors had simply capped the series with a spare cliche ending from the box of big production games they kept in the closet.

That sensation of improvement is missing here. It really feels like a massive DLC of an amazing game, which is not bad, but if you really expected a massive jump in all the aspects from the previous game you will be disappointment. I recommend it, but temper your expectations. I am a fan of GOW since the first one and I enjoyed the game but it really felt underwhelming considering my expectations. Expand

I really loved how art-house and inspired 'God of War' (2018) felt. The long one-take cinematic camera really captures this intimacy as you traverse through the Realms. The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

The game is moody, as the theme of sorrow and loss cling to Kratos on his journey to 'be better' for his Son Atreus and mourn the loss of his wife.

God of War Ragnarök feels like a very sentimental aftermath to that adventure. Chapter 2 (if you may) the more hopeful light-hearted whimsical adventure that still keeps that sentimental core in-tack. This game continues that theme of 'Being Better' choosing to not let destiny and the past corrupt one's personal growth. Because of this, the game puts more emphasis on extended family and community. Making the game more, again, whimsical by design. This is more a fantasy drama compared to the moody direction of (2018).

This is not a bad thing. Ragnarök is more fun, gamified, compared to the first. I really enjoyed my time playing through Ragnarök for its narrative—and at times—fun gameplay decisions. I will say the best thing about God of War Ragnarök is that it has a very cinematic grand adventure narrative with a lot of depth in its performance, persistent narrative threads. Yet, because of this, the game feels more like a film at times than a video-game. An interactive film – if you may.

With all this positive. Some very critical negatives:
The gameplay feels inconsistent on harder difficulties. I believe they wanted a nice animation based souls-lite combat system. I think this is a great idea, but for what ever reason you do not have invincibility frames allowing for more frantic, fast-paced, combat. Also, you can be damaged quite severely when engaging in combos and cannot cancel attacks. This become VERY infuriating when playing the game. It did create a challenge, but it never felt like I was at fault, more the game locked me into something i couldn't escape from. Reminded me a lot of Dark Souls 2 gameplay for whatever reason. Also the lock-on system jerrkss the camera around too much for my liking. Luckily, the game really allows you to customize your play style in the settings without effecting trophies and achievements. Also, too many of the fighting arenas (near the end of the game) put very fast (unpredictable) enemies way too wedged into tight spaces that create this strange, annoying feeling of fighting the camera more than the actual enemies. Game environments, whilst looking very pretty – genuinely breathtaking – don't offer much in the way of inversive gameplay elements (only one or two maps/open world segments do)

God of War Ragnarök is a very fitting conclusion for Kratos. A very beautiful send off to a hardened, troubled character that learns to 'be better'. I, overall, just wish the combat was smoothed up and the level design was a lot tighter and varied.

Overall, a solid 8/10 (i haven't completely completed the game yet - want to do all the after Ragnarök side stuff)

    ATMOSPHERE: 7/10
I honestly expected a little more here. Some of the realms felt oddly barren in the name of an "open world" feeling that didn't really need to exist. It felt like they elected quantity over quality here. Not to say that this game's atmosphere is ugly, some areas are gorgeous. It just feels like some places didn't get a lot of love.

    CHARACTERS: 10/10
The reboots really shine here. They manage to respect what returning characters used to be and also what they grow into. There were returning characters that I did not expect to see whatsoever and realized how much they actually contributed to the story.

    PLOT: 7/10
With some serious pacing problems, plot was a mixed bag compared to GoW 2018. Some sections are a total slog and I couldn't believe how long they were taking while others (particularly Q4) were absolutely captivating. 2018 had fun reintroducing Kratos while Ragnarok had more trouble carrying out his story.

SO yeah, it's basically more of the same. same scenery, same enemies, same combat BUT with a TAD more sprinkled in here. Story was also not as strong nor did I enjoy playing as loki. The mechanics, the combat, the story, the details, and the ending could be likely the end of the GOW saga. They do improve over GoW 2018; however, they introduced new parts of the games that were added poorly.

Some of the bad aspects of the game are:
    - There is some problem with pacing in the first half of the game. After the amazing intro and battle, we will have to explore new areas where basically most of the battles are very dull and there are too many puzzles that might feel you bored of it.
    - Extended artificial walking and climbing scene to tell you a story. This is personal, but just "playing" an automatic pilot part where you have to climb or walk while they tell you the story was a bad decision. I would have loved to do it as a cut scene.
    - The overpriced $10 for a PS4 game. We are still playing an old-generation game. There was no point to stop giving them an improved version like GOW 2018 had back then. The graphics are pretty much similar between versions and the use of the vibration and haptic feedback is at most unnoticeable. The damn gaps where you have to go through as loading screen.
    - Bugs at launch: Several parts where the music got bugged (no music suddenly) or the effects did not play properly. There were a couple of bugs that made me redo the sections. Frame drops on large areas. Many of them affected my experience.

Those are the reasons why this game is not getting a 9 or even a 10. The best game Playstation Studios has released in a while. I am Happy I could play it.

A last gen game and that shows, long corridors of beautiful vistas connected by slow climbing, tunnels, cracks, that slow you down so that old consoles can keep up, with the visuals on display. When it opens up its usually large water areas with small ilands, desert with small alcoves or ice areas that are kinda empty, impressive for ps4 with 2013 hardware, but on ps5 not so much.
Facial animation and mocap is insane makes the characters look alive with weight like they live in a world with gravity that actually affects things on armor and objects in motion.

    Combat = 6
barley above average for games of this type, where it falls short is the focus on makin things look cool instead of feeling good. its very slow, combos/skills look cool by slowing down time, but only for you as enemies can still move fast, example when you combo an enemy and the slow-Mo finisher / jump high while yelling slowly, enemy's will just recover move out and slap you while Kratos try to look cool, or totally assault you while you cast some skill/spell that lock you in to animations, that don't stagger enemies. All this makes you just use r1 attacks and dodge as blocking is worthless cuz they spam unlockable and shield breaking stuff all the time. this makes 85% of the whole skill tree useless.

Back are the challenge bosses but not as good as the Valkyries, this time they teleport fly shoot summon enemies have infinite poise, spam unlockable jump attacks like they are some kinda flea, sometimes they trow multiple bosses at a time kinda cheap tbh. frustrating to the point of me just over leveling as the fun of a challenge was not there, Story fights are good but if i compare to Elden Rings polished combat and bosses this is inferior in every way.

    World and navigation =7
Traversal is slow constantly slowed down by hidden loading such as climbing, crawl tunnels, gaps to squeeze tru, some worlds are huge other very small. all puzzles are back with hardly anything new, freeze gears, throw axe at 3 blue things to open chest, trow ax at red things in order to open stuff all copied from previous game.

It’s strictly subjective - going through game for me is wishing to finally involve into encounter, after long running, climbing and talking. Maybe it’s controversial, but it has this Ubisoft vibe - force you to listen decent story and open world is about running from one marker to another. The best thing is what between all of that which is FIGHTING. Nevertheless, after Souls and Elden Ring God of War is just good

But he doesn't add up anything new, the combat and music almost the same, the world is more open that is good.
But the worst was the end the story, the fight with Thor and Odin was lame, not epic at all.
Also, kratos love at the end, with the stupidest excuse I have heard, could be done much better.
For conclusion, the start and middle are great, end is awful.

I had so much fun playing this game! Love all the side quests and mini-boss fights.

The story had great potential, but tried to do too much. Lot's of woke pandering and wimpy dialog didn't help. I would have kept it simple.. E.G. How about Loki lies and betrays Thor helping GOW kill him (because thats what Loki does). The tragedy is Loki leaves his father in the end because they see the world different, but the father does not change, he stays resolute in his distain for gods as he sit's on a throne, e.g. Conan sitting on his throne adorned in power and bad ass-ness.

Where the game lacked is those RPG elements and exploration, I wish the game was made more linear than it is but that is just my preference.
Everything this game did, they did in God of War (2018) better, except for the gameplay which was one of the better ones I played, the story made more sense in GoW 2018 the characters were more loveable, in God of War Ragnarok it felt forced.
Overall I would recommend this game if you are a fan of God of War series or if you are looking for something great, but I would recommend playing God of War (2018) first.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I 100%'d this game about a week or so. Took time to soak it in. This is a great game but not without flaws - sadly, the most obvious flaw is that this game is inferior to the game that came before it.

How is it that Baldur was a far more compelling and threatening villain than Thor and Odin combined. Sure, Thor packed a punch and had layers. But, most of his - and Odin's - story was about Atreus' adventures rather than anything to do with Kratos.

The combat was great and the graphics/visuals were beautiful - but only slightly better than the previous game in both regards.

The overall gameplay maybe felt a little too familiar - I wouldn't call it DLC but see some people's point when they use "DLC" to criticize the game. Vanaheim was the only place that felt new. Even Svartleheim just felt like an extension of Midgard in the first game (lots of rowing, beaches to explore, mountain to climb via tunnel system, etc.).

    Now into spoiler territory...

The story was great at its peaks (Ragnarok was epic), but also had some repetitive and lazy bits. The standout "lazy bits" for me are in regard to Freya and Sif. Although it would have broke my heart, the only logical ending for Freya after God of War 2018 was for Kratos to kill her - another God wiped out by the Ghost of Sparta. For her to suddenly be like "if you kill Odin and break the curse that lets me travel out of Midgard, I'll forgive you for killing my son"... felt a little lazy. Now an objectively "lazy bit" of storytelling was Sif. Her sudden change of heart made absolutely no sense. Her disdain for Odin and Thor was primarily because Odin was allowing Atreus to stay in Asgard - rather than avenging or allowing Thor to avenge the deaths of Magni, Modi, and Baldur. She hated Atreus and Kratos for their deaths and there were never any signs/hints that she cared about the Midgard refugees. Then Ragnarok comes, Atreus and Kratos are at their doorstep and about to fight Thrud, and suddenly Sif shows up to convince her daughter to help the people of Midgard and help Atreus and Kratos because Odin is a cruel god?! Sounds to me like the writers of the game couldn't figure out a way to keep Thrud around as an ally post-game and shoe-horned this into the story.

All that said... I NEED New Game + mode. I've replayed the first game easily a dozen times. Although the above may seem mostly negative, this game is still amazing and I'll likely replay it just as much as the first after New Game + is released.

As someone who has been playing God of war since the first one in 2005, I have found enjoyment in every entry. 2018 was a bit divisive for some people, but with ragnorok a lot of that has been improved.
There's more enemy and boss types and the combat feels faster and tighter then the previous entry. This game a little more brutal and violent then 2018, but never quite hits the level of the Greek saga. There's a difference between violence and blood/gore. Miniboss kills fall back on "snapping its neck" way to often, which is brutal and violent but not bloody or gory. Sure there are more decapitations and dismemberment in this game, but when you decapitate a huge monster there is a surprising lack of blood. Something I'm sure could have been fixed.
I honestly blame this on the scope of the game. First from a mechanics perspective, shifting the series from strictly linear, to a more open experience takes a lot resources.(Wouldn't quite call this game open world but it does have bigger areas and several branches to explore). Another aspect that resource management effects is the set piece moments. I don't want to spoil anything but there are a few memorable events like this is the game, but there were also moments where this should have been more focused on. Events happen that should have been highlighted as these amazing cinematic moments, but instead take the backseat. Another factor shifted by resource management
And second the fact that this was originally going to be a trilogy. There was a lot they had to accomplish in this game. Which effects the pacing a little bit. Gameplay wise, you have these character driven segments that are essentially flooded with fight after fight. As if you will forget that its an action game, if they don't constantly remind you. Don't get me wrong its an action game and the action is very well done, but sometimes the in-between fights felt tacked on, filler if you will. Even when you have story wise combat heavy moments, their seems to always be one or two filler fights.
Now on to the story, the story is good, but its also effected by originally being a trilogy and the pacing is little off because of it. There were a couple of times where something or some moment could have been fleshed out more. but it still hits everything it needs to. And the way they've positioned this game i can't really tell where the split would have been. But it indubitably would have been more fleshed out. And maybe even had more cinematic set pieces. This does give it a slight rushed feeling but not much.
At this point you may be thinking that i didn't enjoy this game much. But quite the contrary. I only focused on giving a detailed and honest review. Its not perfect but its still one hell of a ride and very enjoyable. I had a lot of fun and look forward to the next entry in the series.

Bonus points: I loved how now that its not some big secret Kratos goes into his history a bit more in this one which was a nice touch for a series veteran

Combat was a little bit better on this one compared to the last game, and to be honest i think it is not a mindblowing upgrade to the last GOW, it is just, better if you know what i mean. Sometimes there's fights when it does not feels it should be one, feels like that fight is there for filling more time into de game, and maybe that point it's just on me but i kinda felt it like that, for me combat is an straight 8/10.

There is 2 characters that evolves and take part of the great God of War Ragnarök story, and they are Brok and Sindri, i can't explain without spoilers how this 2 characters are so important and made its way to the player's heart, truly a great character evolution between the last and previous game.

For me the game lasted about 25 hours without the side missions, straight to the story, and its ok, i mean, 25 hours are fine, i struggle with time to play videogames and i feel the time was right.

And the ending of this game is just glorious, i don't want to talk about it much but it is just incredible.

Its because the game is lacking more of the epic and wtf moments that it used to have. Dont get me wrong, i love this game in every bit and form! But it is missing more of those epic moments rather than those intimate moments which are everywhere after the mid game and it sorta breaks the immersion and doesnt feel god of warish, it needed more of those bad ass moments. So overall the core story of the game just didnt do it for me, it felt like it was made for children and teens rather than adults or to the original god of war fans, but at least it ended in such a wonderful way and an open ending towards the next chapter.
But other than the less bad ass moments and and somewhat of a let down about the story the new world of god of war is full of life! and full of content for you to do, its big enough to chew on and long enough to fulfil that satisfaction that the predecessor needed. With all the realms being unlocked, changes to the realms after the last time kratos and atreus have visited the realms, and more challenges and things to do and explore all the time! Even after 100% completion i still just want to go back and see how gorgeous each realm looks and feels. Combat is here in its glory yet its a hit or miss, with movements and attack changes that didnt seem necessary like holding the triangle button that you never use especially when you unlock the attack and perks that would charge your axe/ blades after a few hits, and no more upgrades towards rage and unarmed combat makes feel like a missed opportunity, tho you do unlock a whole new weapon later on in the game but ill keep my mouth shut for that, and probably thats why the whole change in combat was probably changed towards and saved for that, which you end up using the new weapon more down the line.
Overall its a phenomenal game with a sweet soundtrack, amazing visuals and detail to the world, content, and combat. Tho the story felt like a slight let down and it did need more epic moments rather than these childish disney like acts, i felt like it couldve been the true masterpiece everyone was talking about. And i would definitely be coming back on NG+ for new content and to get a 2nd opinion.

Some great improvements from GoW 2018 especially in terms of gameplay, the story is solid (some truly outstanding performances) but I definitely preferred the more focused pacing and general approach in GoW 2018.

My gripes with it are that "Give Me God Of War" difficulty is not at all that difficult and Kratos stops saying "Boy!" which was a major selling point for me from the original. I don't think that the sections where you control Atreus are all that good and somewhat tedious, the rest of the game is great. Another issue however is that the Drauger boss fights are very underwhelming and just easy. Another personal preference is that you have Freya join you after finishing the game, it would've been much better with Atreus. I recommend that you listen when Atreus says we should go treasure hunting because otherwise it will have to be done with Freya Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Truly an incredible game. In my opinion a no-brainer for game of the year. The Thor fight at the beginning, Brok's blessing on the Draupnir Spear, and the twist with Tyr all blew me away. Critics of the game mostly harp on the repetitive combat and lack of game, which frankly I don't understand. The story is well-mingled with the gameplay, not giving too much of either at any given time. The combat improves on 2018's masterpiece with greater variety of monsters and a plethora of upgrades to adapt playstyle to. A+ performances from the entire cast; I'm looking forward to Christopher Judge's next role. My only complaint with the game is the slow sections. Lots of walking and talking, even if the talking is relevant and important. 8/10, I feel blessed to have played two games as good as this and Elden Ring this year. Expand

I didnt like the 2018 game, but I loved this one...however, it has problems, the story could've been better, there was enough material to make TWO games, the ending feels rushed...on the other hand, the writting becomes pretty messy near the end. When it comes to gameplay, there are also some problems; camera is still a problem when fighting multiple enemies, and the game wont just SHUT UP, every time you spend more than 3 seconds trying to figure out a boss or a puzzle, your AI partners will start giving you hints, and they wont stop, and in some cases, they will give you these hints in a "funny" manner, and hearing "jokes" when you are in the middle of a boss fight...it gets annoying, really annoying.

Why give it a 9/10 with all these problems, then? because what this game does good, it does it REALLY good.

Also, I played the entire game on a base PS4, and while I'm sure the game running at 60fps and 4K on a PS5 is a better experience, the game still runs and looks amazing at 30fps and 1080p...no slowdowns or bugs, even on day one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A worthy successor... with some missteps. Ragnarok improves on what was arguably the only significant flaw in the previous game - monster variety, especially mini bosses. It also improved on exploration - the world is now fully backtrackable (at least where collectibles are concerned so you can't miss anything). It's not grindy at all as some people say, maybe if you wanna try different builds so you want to upgrade the gear for it but not really to just 100% it. Game is fun and challenging albeit very easy to platinum (played on Give Me No Mercy). Companions are also more involved in the fights which is nice. Draupnir spear was a cool addition to Kratos' arsenal. But...

Now for the negatives - I dunno why developers tend to put this in their games lately but it really grinds my gears - the voice line clues! (from your companions in this game). Like why? I get into a new puzzle area and companions starts spitting out clues before I can even have a proper look around. Annoying.
Some collectibles were made very easy to spot (ravens and treasure maps locations).
Few bugs mostly just companion getting stuck on a piece of environment when prompt to interact with a quest item. One bigger bug was when Freya just stopped doing anything when fighting Gná.
What was probably the biggest letdown of this game was the final mission. It was a war against the whole Asgard and it felt just like any other mission. Most of the war stuff happened in the background if at all. Odin and Thor could also be a bit more difficult to beat.

But the absolute worst part was the involvement of real life political agendas. That's never good.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a solid game. It does everything it needs to and nothing more. The faults this game has are with its’ hand holding nature and linear pathing. Outside of combat the game nearly plays itself. Atreus, Freya and Mimir answer all the game’s puzzles before you even have a chance to solve them yourself. There’s too many QTE (quick time event) situations that are needless. I understand the original trilogy of games had them but it’s an old trope. These would just be better served as a cutscene. The Game is on rails outside of combat, almost literally. As you go on these Disney Land-esque train and boat rides to hide the loading screens. Thankfully the game does provide plenty of lore and backstory to make the trek more bearable. The combat is fantastic and almost feels like a fighting game with extensive combos and a variety of awesome moves to choose from. The enemy variety has improved since the last entry. Plenty of different enemy types and epic bosses to slay. I just wish the in between battle stuff was more engaging. God of War Ragnarök feels like a walking simulator at times. Many PlayStation games as of late follow this trend. However the sound design is awesome! The voice acting and music are top tier. The animations are both good and bad at times. Sometimes you’ll sit in a boat with your son Atreus and he’s stiff as a board. Other times he’s galavanting around with smooth motions. I will say the graphics are phenomenal as well. God of War Ragnarok tells a heart warming and engaging story with glorious combat. But everything outside of that is a slow, tedious, and relatively thoughtless trudge of pressing random buttons to activate switches, mechanisms, and doors. The puzzles are so simplistic they might as well not be there at all. Especially because Atreus and Mimir act as kratos’s brain throughout the game.

The second half of the game (after 15 hours of play and climbing a massive wall) improves the overall experience. The battles get bigger and better, the story takes a few unexpected turns and the combat improves after receiving an awesome new weapon. Highly recommended getting through the messy first half because the game excels in the second!

The combat feels less weighty and brutal with what seems to be a reduced number of options for each available weapon. The elemental bow options also feel worse than those available last time out and the runic summons for the player are significantly weaker.
In terms of the story while still phenomenal, I personally feel that the story can get lost in is own wake and struggles to hold its scale at times. This results in some character arcs not quite feeling as fulfilling as you would hope and some conclusions feeling a little underwhelming. That being said the set pieces these stories take place in are spectacular, all 9 realms feel like real places , not just levels, and so it's almost impossible not feel completely immersed in these lands. These realms being bookended with some of the best boss fights this side of Bloodborne certainly helps the levels reputation in mind too.

Overall a game I do not regret a second of playing but definitely a weaker entry than its earlier installment but a top game none the less.

A good and enjoyable game but there are a few things I dislike about it. 1. Unnecessary. 2. A bit bad pacing during the second half of the game. 3. The Ragnarok battle was disappointing.A good and enjoyable game but there are a few things I dislike about it. 1. Unnecessary. 2. A bit bad pacing during the second half of the game. 3. The Ragnarok battle was disappointing. Should've been longer and more impactful but instead it ended very quickly with the only important character on our side dying being Freyr. His death was poorly written , unnecessary, and his character wasn't developed enough for me to even care about him let alone be upset about his death. 4. In Gow 2018 the Leviathan Axe in imbued with Eitr, the World Serpent's venom which is suppose to kill Thor during Ragnarok or something along those lines, but in this game even though Thor is pierced multiple times with the axe the venom has absolutely no effect, it's almost like they forgot about it entirely. I was really hoping to see something happen with that but alas I am fated to be left disappointed. 5. Not enough boss battles during Ragnarok. I feel as though there should've been 3-5 big battles against the different Aesir Gods during Ragnarok but instead we got just Thor and Odin. I know Odin has two brothers but they aren't seen at all, there's also Vidar who's supposed to kill Fenrir in Norse mythology but he isn't mentioned at any point. I really feel that they could've done a much better job with Ragnarok, both the battle and the game, but overall I did enjoy it and had a lot of fun. A 8/10 is what I feel this game truly deserves. I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]
