This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This is a clunky action game where common enemies are threatening damage sponges for you, the god of war. Compared to the previous God of War games this is a step up in graphics and polish, but a huge step back in gameplay and story. I returned it to the library after several hours.

You feel like a toddler getting constantly told what to do without the actual freedom nor the capacity to do anything you dare to expect, in a world that is oscillating between the bad fever dream of an immature fan of vikings and a B-movie fantasizing of getting an Oscar.

    > Movements are cumbersome, like driving a supertanker in a narrow corridor with a torticollis.

    > RPG elements are infuriating: you keep smashing ginormous treasure troves only to pick up a sad little sack of coins or a puny horn you're hesitating to decide where it should go in your body. When using multiple of them you feel better. I don't want to analyze this further.

    > The camera in combats insists on showing you the marvels of the cardboard decorations carefully crafted by the hundreds of artists the studio hired, all the while some generic variation of an enemy is hammering you joyously from behind.

    > The locking system is such a joke you might think you'd get better results if you asked your grandma to count jumping fleas. Oh it's there, ah no wait it jumped, I lost it. Too bad for you I guess, you've just sent your carefully built turbo-attack on a rock than doesn't even budge a millimeter.

    > There are puzzles and mysteries to solve. The only problem is that every single damn talking NPC around you insists to spoil you within the 5 seconds it takes to realize you're in front of a puzzle. Either this or you don't have the tool to solve this and you will have to navigate that whole entire level once again when you get finally get it - provided you remember where these puzzles are since the map is as useless as napkin with random signs scribbled it.

    > Apparently there's a story. Sure. Everyone had children with everyone, now the kids are becoming annoying and particularly Atreus, so everyone is cranky. Kratos being alone again is particularly in a bad mood, since he can't enjoy relaxing with Venus like he did before to forget he massacred his whole family, and has instead to travel half-naked in the snow with bears and bearded idiots to have his silly son finally shut up.

And some people dare to compare this overproduced boomer game to a monument like Elden Ring? Not that Elden Ring does everything right far from it, but it's still comparing a vacation vlog to a Martin Scorsese movie.

As always, your mileage may vary. Some may like it. If you're a retrogamer with bad glasses and memory for instance.

I gave it a 3 because of the mysophobiac dwarf, but that's the only creative thing in this game.

The setpieces are nice to look at but as soon as you try to explore this game you´ll be confronted with invsible walls everywhere because the creators don´t like you snooping around before they showed you the mandatory segment.

The dialouge is a catastrophe, it´s like a superhero movie, with modern language in a ancient and mythical setting, they couldnt make it sound out of place more than they did, an total atmosphere killer.

Difficulty settings only define the healthpools and attackdmg of the enemies, you can clearly see that the developers not really had any intentions to make the gameplay deep and worthwhile. Balancing? What for, you can kill bosses in the easiest difficulty with a few hits, while the highest gives you damagesponge enemies. The encounters per se are still the same as the were in the 2018 version of this game.

It rather feels like a DLC than a new chapter.

Disappointing on the PS5, it makes no use of the strong hardware of next-gen and traveling between realms is still 20-30 seconds which is a joke when it's near instant on Horizon, GoT and TLOU.

I played on the hardest difficulty and took sweet time with it, Didn't rush the story at all and always did all the side quests available before proceeding with the story. Here's my opinion about the game that I have been waiting for since rolling the credits on Gow2018 4 years ago. Note: this won't be spoiler free (you have been warned) I really never expected this level of incompetency from Santa Monica studio. They took whole 5 years to make this game (same time it took them Gow2018 which was built from the ground) and still couldn't top it or even be on the same level with it.

My biggest issue with this game is the story. So many questions from the last game left unanswered. At the beginning of the game Kratos is angry about not knowing what Faye wanted, but then it's never mentioned again through the story and we didn't know why she wanted her ashes spread in the peak of Jotunheim and why she hid that she's a giant.

After spending the entirety of the last game hyping Kratos vs Thor, I expected his fight to be insane and at least top that of Baldur.
But his fight was meh, Especially at the end.
Odin comes across as a coward especially against Kratos. He doesn't have the All Father vibes at all and doesn't show any feats of power aside from backstabbing Brok and Thor. The final fight against Thor and Odin felt more like a moral lecture from the writers rather than what the characters would actually do.

Ragnarök is poorly executed with many of it's very important event's missing for no reason.

They lied about a lot happening in this final chapter and lied about the pandemic not affecting the game. The story is so rushed and all the build up and foreshadowing from the last game went to nowhere. I honestly can't see what part of this game took them whole 4.5 years to make and the help of other 9 studios.

Do I recommend this game ? Yes. Though don't be fooled by the title (Ragnarök) this game has very little to do with Ragnarök.
Is it a masterpiece ? No. Did it live up to the hype and deliver all what the devs promised ? No.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would give the first re-GoW an 8. Plagued by mechanics that make the game as unenjoyable as possible, it was the best reinventing of a franchise I have ever played. Unlike so many games like it, though I left it installed, I never went back because I dreaded the gameplay. Ragnarok is not a brilliant reimagining, it is the exact same game, and they doubled down on the unenjoyable game mechanics. It is criminal that this game is ranked this highly. I have no idea why anybody would unless they have a GoW tattoo or hurt themselves for amusement.

Then there was navigating the trash world. VAnaheim was one of the most painful walking around experiences I have ever had in a game. I spent hours trying to get to places I could see, but there was a bush. One I needed to get to a plateau with four adjacent islands that could possibly be the way, plus night and day variations in the foliage, and it was a boat landing with a door behind a waterfall.

    1. Obviously, the worst and mostly widely panned (is that camera humor?) is the camera. Instead of being immersive, it forces me to meta game, which is the opposite of immersive and never ideal. (I switch between auto-target+ for large groups of enemies that lets you switch to targets off screen since the camera is always stuck and then turn it off for bosses especially in pairs)
    2. Healing before bosses is done as follows: run at the boss and die. There is no healing up unless you are dead. Maybe there is another solution, but this easy, not fun, and ridiculous.
    3. Healing after a tough fight. Nope. Did you just have a jaw clenching battle to the death, then rebirth, and then almost death? Sweet, right? Sorry, though. You just wasted your time. There is no mechanic to come back from that. So many times I get a surprise bad guy that does tiny damage or a poison dot that kills me after a tough fight since you can't heal unless you are fighting or get lucky.
    4. I am not done yet, but one female character's development is ridiculous. She's real mad then providing you motivation and wiping your butt for you five minutes later. L another goes from trying to kill Loki to calling him her daughters friend and colluding to order her father-in-law.
    5. The puzzles are monotonous. With some tweaking (at least the stupid sounding pick to get through the doors is gone) this has the same puzzles.
    6. The ending of the game could be replaced with a Vin Diesel “family” meme.
    7. The camera pulling even with auto aim turned off is ridiculously obnoxious when trying to complete a challenge that involves aim under fire. You can pause and go into settings and change aim settings to include puzzle objects then turn it off when it’s over so you don’t have to toggle through objects during combat the rest of the time. This is definitively bad design.
    8) The last optional boss and one other have an ability that negates an entire play style. If you were playing ranged, change all your gear and settings. You have to be in close and aggressive melee range to stop the blue ring ability that is the entire arena.

I dropped it down now that I beat it, and started playing Elden Ring again. It is legitimately less frustrating than GoW, and Elden Ring has buckets of issues.

Terrible combat and balancing, destroyed most fun for me. Dodge windows are insanely short, many boss attacks can not be avoided and Kratos dies after 3 hits. Dodge windows are insanely short, many boss attacks can not be avoided and Kratos dies after 3 hits. Switching to Story difficulty for bosses fixed it, but normal combat was too easy. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Characters are cheap and poor written (Heimdall, Atreus, Angrboda, freyr.............) This is a big minus when half of the game are cutcenes displaying the characters. Also the story gets boring as a consequence. Thor and Odin, maybe the most anticipated part about this game, are minimized to two hippies with no debt, and are combined not half as interesting as Baldur was. The nine realms feels like a little neighborhood where people can go wherever they please.

Gameplay mechanics is good, but its generally the same as GoW 2018. Especially the runic attacks are 90 percent, or more, the same as those from the previous game. The puzzles are poor made, with little variation and a simple design which doesn't require any amount of thought, but rather a walkthrough of the whole area to get a glimpse of some hidden crack or mark. There are scenes which are extremely outdrawn, when you just have to sit and watch two **** ride a cowthing for an hour or so, with no actual gameplay, and a massive chunk of zero budget dialogue. While "playing" through this part, it's a wonder I didn't quit.

The only good things about this game are a few good bossfights (though not on level with the prequel), SOME good artdesign, some good music.

In addition, the sidequests and grind are boring, repetitive, and a massive waste of time.

Note: Also I suppose this review will be removed by metacritic for no particular reason, exept corruption.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So where to begin. I really anticipated this game. Watched the release time go down like every evening after work. Than it finally came out. I started it and than.. Nothing. I just felt nothing. As the game starts you get pushed into a story a few years ahead after the end of part one. Now Fimbulwinter is reigning over the land. Simply form the very first scene, where Kartons sits at the bonfire In this cave the game didn't Catch me at all. The scene is way to long, and because there is no talking or any other significant action you don't know how to deal with it. Then both go to their sled and then finally you start taking real action in the game for the very first time. But still. No feelings.. You drive, they talk, the things spoken are not very interesting so far... Then out of nowhere Freya starts attacking you. Now there is the first time where we engage in that what the God of War franchise is known for the best. Fighting. But the fight just feels not right. I mean she has power over the land and stuff because of her magic powers and she easily could crush them in between all the rocks and stuff but she didn't. It just feels like the developers wanted to kickstart the game with this fight but they got it completely wrong. I mean why is she fighting them like this. I mean it should feel like hell brake loose. It is simply missing something. And this feeling carries on and on and on through out the whole game. I can understand that the game story wise needed to skip some years and that there are things like the dog dying and stuff that are new that need time to be explained. But the game, as good as it looks and as big and wound the story is meant to be, it lacks the one thing every game must have in order to make you feel like playing it all day long. It does not draw you into the world into the realm of the game. It does not give you the feeling of being a part of this world. I did not finish the game. This I need to say. Because every time I start it, after 10 minutes I want to close it. There is something in myself that tells me: "You are wasting your time." The only thing that kept me playing as far as I have played it (like 7-8 hours) is the combat and the possibility to discover and loot the world. I don't care for the story. There are so many things that disappoint me that make me really really sad, because the potential of a story and world like this is insane. Another big point where the developers, in my opinion, failed, is the music. The atmosphere. The level design it self is mind blowing immersive if you know how long it takes to build something impressive like this. The lighting is extremely good to. But there is no fitting music and therefor, completely missing atmosphere. This whole potential gets overlooked. You just go through the game like: "Yeah what ever." I remember God of War 2, the steeds of time level where you can just stand at the front end of the horses - the part where you have to free them - and the music is so subliminal but epic that it awakens a feeling in you like, you can really relate to the giantess and epic scale of the whole game. Within this few notes you can here the whole story of the game. But this feeling is missing completely. Any feeling is missing. They try to force you to feel, with overpriced emotional moments but again you don't get the chance to relate to the scenes. Next big negativ point are the conversations, mostly hollow and to modern, when it comes to the chosen words. Especially when Atreus speaks. In parts of the story logic is completely missing. Example: Atreus and Sindri secretly go to the lake of the nine - a well known area form the first game. There they try to awaken the world serpent. Sindri asks Atreus if he has tried calling the serpent. Then Atreus said that the horn was of no use. Than Sindri says: "Im not talking about the horn." And he immediatly starts calling the serpent in the ancient language it understands. LIKE WTF. He was there, year after year knowing that he can just call her and never did it. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Even the appearance of Thor and Odin is lame as hell. Such massive Characters - Lore wise - and then Thor appears just like that, simply walks in their house and says: "Nice place." In those moments I instantly want to close the game and delete it. Even Odin he just appears like that. I mean he is the Highest God of this realm and comes into his house, just like that to make a deal. And the whole situation with all the conversations just feels like the developers just wanted to get over with the introduction. Heartless. I would have wished for some more epic scale for their appearance. Something that does justice to the greatest gods in the realm. In my opinion, after so many great anticipated titles in last years that turn out to be hollow and superficial. Maybe its time to go back to the basics of gaming where the game it self did not needed to be a movie but something we love to play. Expand

This is not a game. Its one very long cut scene. There are zero dopamine hits to be had playing (sitting through) it.

Honestly, if this is next gen gaming I'd rather go for a walk. Shame on the developers for putting so much effort into the aesthetics and none into playability.

GoW 2018 is a masterpiece, while GoW Ragnarok is a game. If the writing and the acting were not so great, this game would have been a 2 or 3.

Edit: The great story can't save the game. In every boss fight that involves more than one boss, I'm fighting the camera more than the actual bosses. GOW franchise is ruined for me. It should be 0, but I'll give it a 2. 1. I don't why, but the

    1. I don't why, but the developers insist on enemies surrounding you all the time. Even if you run to a spot to face them at a perfect angle, the enemies will find their way to go to your other sides, and this is not the case for Gow2018. Making things worse, they butchered quick turn, you can press D-Down to quick turn ONLY when you are blocking, which MAKES ABSOLUTELY **** NO SENSE.
    2. Parry was satisfying in 2018, but not here, it's weak as hell. Enemies seem harder to stagger.
    3. If you want the witch time? Well they **** bind it to one set of armor and the time is reduced. They nerfed the combat in every **** possible way.
    4. Almost forgot to mention that they hard-nerfed the rune attacks, they are laughably bad now, not worth abusing anymore. Just pick the ones with the shortest cooldown, at least you can stagger mobs. For damage? Don't even bother.
    5. Do you remember the developers boasting about their "evolution" by which they mean you can cancel any attacks in GOW2018, even the rune attacks? Well well, guess who walked that back? You can't anymore.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The other half of the story, repetitive, open world fatigue, shallow story, technically a last gen (PS4) game.

That's how I would describe it in as few words as possible. If you liked it and disagree, well good for you, but you may want to read further what a good and entertaining game with a greek god in norse mythology could have been like.

So, God of War 2018 was good, why rate this as a failure? It's the same game with the other half of the story, isn't it? Correct! Why do I have to go through all the grinding again? What does it add to the story? Why should I play it?

Here is my point of view: God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok as a Playstation 4 game in 2018 till 2022 with 20 hours of action packed core playtime? _Fantastic game!_ Not the most inventive of revolutionary one, and I would accept mid 2010's graphics in 2022. Graphics have gotten so detailed and rendering so technically flexible that it is fine to play older games while not feeling to be thrown back to the stone ages. But that never really mattered for games with good story telling either did it? Correct again! While I was excited about the 2018 game and its open world, times have changed, personally, but also looking back at similar games, they are just chores. If you don't want to make a career on gaming and you are just looking for good entertainment, well the industry does not care about you it seems. And that is disappointing. Do I want to play 50 or more open world games with all their chores and little sprinkles of story or do I want to have a successful life and career and and peace of mind about my pension and that I was an active part of society?

Hey, I play Fortnite without audio, which is grinding, which can be somewhat competitive and fun while being very much repetitive, but I can also listen to news while playing it (ha!). God of War 2018 was lengthy, much babbling, much grinding, shallow open world mechanics like you have seen in other games where you have to run circles because you can't access them now, and also aspects you forgot about the 2018 game so you are even more running around in circles. repetitive ad nausea! 20 hours of main story well executed, beautifully explained in consumable sized chunks with 80 to 200 hours of game play in ONE game where you could switch between the state of the world in 2018 and 2022? GREAT! Other games can pull it off (to some degree). And also, please, a bit of breath in the action packed scenes. some characters where apparently there during Ragnarok but the "camera" and everything else was shaking so much that I didn't see anything and I felt that I missed something important. But that's a problem of a game, of game designers and story telling or explaining that there is not enough focus on what is important.

Please get rid of skill trees in action games. Filling out an excel sheet in between missions is not immersion!

I love games and story telling, I loved some parts of this game, but it was so stretched thin that I think it wasn't worth the time I invested. And that is bad. But too many people and journalists seem to be fine with how things are and that's that.

Too much talking. If you want silence, the head talks, the boy talks, the woman talks, Kratos talks, they talk together, alone, dead or alive, there are lots of unnecessary dialogues all the time.

The game looks like a bad mix of Zelda, Tomb Raider, Uncharted and for the optional content, Souls. The most interesting part is: there is no God of War on it. It's not an epic game with epic scenes. If you want action, the game gives you puzzles. If you want to explore, the game gives you cutscenes.

Sadly, it's an AAA that seems to be a BBB. Same formula as its predecessor, too much longer, not better.

Santa Monica thought that people might have forgottton about that game and we have a chance to gather few gems from that mightest title of the year 2012. which also happened to be the GOTY. Now this is disgraceful. For a highly hyped game, you are copying ideas from another masterpiece instead of crafting your own!. Plus when I paid attention, the music intrument too is exactly the same which was in the background music of Shadow of mordor, Of Course one would always crave to make titles which came out of no where (Unlike GOW which has developed grounds for pre-hyped anticipation) and made amass players fall in love with it's fight mechanics and combat systems. Speaking of fighting mechanics, Let me emphasize first that this is a 2022 title, The developers should strive to impress the audience, not some average combat mechanics which are only made cinametically impressive with button pressings i.e. O, R1, L1, L1+R1 etc. because they couldn't craft such mechanics into skill-based combat so they made it fixed like a movie, that's completely not fine. I urge every GOW fan to at least play a full gamethrough of a 2007's Dark Sector, and you will forget the Kratos Axe, and admire the fighing mechanics it offers ( Provided you like skill based combat as opposed to pre-fetched combat scenes). Anyway, I wanted to enlighten the GOW fans that it's developers are cherry-picking ideas from another massively successful title, but still didn't manage to surpass or even give us at it's par combat system which we could really enjoy.
    * And for a true gamer, which isn't really interested in a dull story line, they should have given the option to ski the cinametics, Seriously?, we have had far better stories to watch out there, it's a waste of time, watching a dull movie, which can't be skipped in it's fresh experience ( I know once you finish the game, you can skip in the Game+, but why not at our will)

** Wolfs: As far as I remember, In the first game, we have been slaying wolves, and all of a sudden here we see "The Boy" has a wolf pet, which as it dies, attempts to give a grieving touch to it. Hey? if you want to make it emotional, better make a attached character from the last episode die instead of a new "Wolf" which came out of no where, I didn't care even a little about it.

Overall, there are far better games out there to play and have fun with, and at most this is going to be a one-time playthrough for me, unlike some other games out there, where gameplay never gets old!.

After completing the game in six hours, I was left to stare at the God of War square that’s on my PS5 dashboard.

It’s true what everyone has been saying before the game was delayed and launched. This is more of a DLC to the previous game than a new stand-alone sequel. There’s absolutely nothing new about Ragnorok. It’s a continuation of the previous game and that’s pretty much it. Sure, you get a new story, but nothing that will make you go “AHA!” There’s no new game play mechanics that will make you lose your mind. Just more of the same as all Sony’s other first party games.

Does it look pretty on the PS5? It definitely does, but it also looks pretty on the PS4. No different between the two versions. The two versions look identical. The so-called power of the PS5 was not utilized at all. Major ball drop by the devs. The haptic feature is pointless because it drains the battery.

The story itself is entertaining until a certain point. It’s a rinse and repeat game.

The moral of the story and lesson learned, wait for a sale for this type of game. The hefty $70 price is not worth it and you’ll get the very same content when it drops to $25 during the holidays. Now I’m stuck with the digital version. Get the game for $25 during the holidays, then use the $45 use saved and get your soul sucked out of you by an OF creator. That’s the best advise I can give anyone that’s on the fence.

Atreus's thread with this giant kills all immersion from the game.
    I'm dissapointed

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Joguinho bem meia boca, uma DLC do 2018, não curti, Kleitão pai de família, Atreus meio esquisito, saiu um pouco do foco do jogo, matar monstro somente com a força do ódio, bem mucho Expand

Ultra-overrated video game. The typical generic fantasy game. The worst thing is that this or Elden Ring will take the GOTY.

There is no evolution in the way the game is played. Many enemies are also pre created, and the repetition is still high. The story is too flat on the whole, and the story of family ethics does not play the grand theme of the game.

Expected a current gen game but instead we got a ps4 game such a disappointment after all the hype. This is truly a dlc.

This may be the most massively overrated game that has ever existed... it is a boring slog with endless talking and not enough fighting.

I can't help but tip my hat to the entire Santa Monica team. The deeper you delve into the game, the more you'll be drawn into the stunning story of a father and son against the backdrop of perhaps history's most horrific war. Throw in some casually endearing humour, great and fluid gameplay, and wrap it all up with an amazing audiovisual experience. [Issue#323]

Thanks to an amazing cast that’s doing an outstanding job, a compelling story told through the eyes of multiple characters, and top-notch combat, this epic and heartfelt journey strikes all the right chord. It’s impossible not to recommend God of War Ragnarok, but just in case you had any doubts, I strongly advise anyone mildly interested in gaming to play Santa Monica Studio’s latest masterpiece.

It’s a satisfying conclusion to the modern God of War saga, but it’s hard to walk away and not feel like this could have been something greater.
